Book Blogger New Year’s Challenge: Day 6 – Best Book of 2013

    Book Blogger NY Challenge

Today is Day 6 of Parajunkee’s Book Blogger New Year’s Challenge. And if you saw my post yesterday you’ll know just how tough it was for me to pick a worst book. Well, as I mentioned in that post, it’s just as challenging for me to call one book the best book.

I’m just as much a chicken about choosing a favorite read. I feel just as guilty for labeling a book as the “best” when there are so many books I adore. And it’s even harder for me to narrow down the long list of books I love the best to single one out as the best of the best.

Arrrrggh! I soooo wish it was tomorrow. Peeves are way easier than favorite reads.

    Anyway…

For those of you who might want to participate but haven’t yet heard about this challenge, just click on the link above for more details. But here is the schedule of posts…

Day One – YOUR BLOGGER RESOLUTIONS
Day Two – YOUR PROS & CONS OF BLOGGING LIST
Day Three – THE BOOKS OF 2013 YOU ARE SAD YOU MISSED
Day Four – THE BOOKS OF 2014 YOU WON’T MISS
Day Five – WORST BOOK OF 2013

Day Thirteen – SHARE A BLOGGER HORROR STORY
Day Fourteen – BLOGGING WISH LIST OF 2014

    Best Book of 2013

I am so tempted to totally cheat on this post and list as my favorite read of 2013 a book that has absolutely nothing to do with book blogging.

    Sailing Made Easy

SAILING MADE EASY by The American Sailing Association was an incredibly helpful and interesting book and one of my favorite reads of 2013. Of course it wasn’t released in 2013, I just read it in 2013. And it doesn’t have anything to do with my blog, so calling this my favorite read of 2013 wouldn’t be fair.

I also fell madly and passionately in love with Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. But the two books in that series that were my favorites were also not released in 2013 and so I don’t feel right choosing either of those books.

After much internal debate and self-flaggellation, I sort of narrowed it down to two books. One was Rachel Vincent’s WITH ALL MY SOUL which was my favorite read of the first half of the year.

    With All My Soul

And the other was Kresley Cole’s ENDLESS KNIGHT which was my favorite read for the second half of the year.

    Endless Knight

    Why they were favorites?

WITH ALL MY SOUL was an epic finish to an amazing series. It was filled with heartbreak and nerve-wracking suspense. It introduced a brand new character that was so interesting and exciting and is worthy of his very own series. It put me on a roller coaster that did not quit. And it didn’t rush the ending nor did it didn’t tie things up so perfectly that it felt saccharine sweet.

And then there was that whole thing with time. That was a total mind eff. It turned me completely upside down and inside out and left me reeling for days. Then, once I recovered from that I had to recover from all the awesome that was, is and always will be, Tod.

ENDLESS KNIGHT was a sequel to an amazing, sexy, dark and imaginative book that not only met the challenge of being as good as its predecessor, but was able to surpass my wildest expectations for it. It was darker, so much sexier, even more interesting, exciting, amazing, and the cliffhanger ending was even more of a killer than the first.

I had hoped, wished and hoped, that I would love Death as much as I wanted to. I also hoped that my love for Jack wouldn’t fade. Well, I adored Death more than I thought I could. And Jackson was every bit as stubborn and sexy and lovable as he was in book one. Oh, and the game was even deadlier, Evie was even more fiercely awesome, and the world was even more intriguing.
    line2

Well, even though I took the plunge and listed a couple of “best” books, they are by no means all of the books I consider to be the best of the year. There were so many authors whose books wowed and amazed me, whose characters I shed tears over, whose writing made me a fan for life.

Most every book I read in its entirety in 2013 was at some point during the read a “best” book for me. So it sucks – big time – that I had to choose just two. And there is no way I can choose between those two I picked to label one as better than the other. I don’t compare books to one another. I can only hope to judge them by my emotional reaction to the read, how long the book clings to me after I read it, and how desperate I am to re-read it.

Right now, for example, I’m currently fighting the urge to ditch my TBR pile and just go back and re-read all the books in the Fever series.

    But what about you?

Were you able to select just one book as your favorite? Did you think about skipping Day 6 of the challenge so you wouldn’t have to?

Like me, were you able to pare down your list of favorite reads, but could not limit your “best” book to just one? Or were you able to unequivocally pinpoint one book as the “best of the best” for 2013?

If not (or if so) I’d love to know!

    Best Book Boyfriends of 2013

Ack! Once again the rules require that I choose my book boyfriends based upon books that were not only released in 2013 but that I read in 2013. So unfair! That means I can’t choose Barron’s or V’lane from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. *sobs* And I can’t choose Austin from Talia Vance’s GOLD.

A few of last year’s book boyfriends made the cut this year. But there are also a few new adds to the list.

And, yes, some of those bookish boyfriends were from the same book. Who says there has to be just one bookish boyfriend per book?

A Few Other Bookish Boys I Love

I have so many book boyfriends from the books I read. Most of them are the bad boys, but a few of them happen to be good. And if I had just a little more time this week to create these top ten posts, I might have opted to do one list of Bad Boy Book Boyfriends and another of Good Boy Book Boyfriends.

But as I have way too many posts to create and so little time to get them done, for today I’m sticking with just the one list. However, I can’t pass up the chance to list just a few other bookish boys I adore.

Will of Jessa Holbrook’s WHILE YOU’RE AWAY

    Colt of Karsten Knight’s AFTERGLOW

Ethan of Chloe Neill’s HOUSE RULES and BITING BAD

Warner of Tahereh Mafi’s DESTROY ME

    Logan of C.J. Redwine’s DECEPTION

    Fenn of Lesley Livingston’s DESCENDANT

Jules of Amy Plum’s UNTIL I DIE

Kai of Wendy Higgins’ SWEET PERIL

Dante of Victoria Scott’s THE COLLECTOR and THE LIBERATOR

Finn of Jessica Spotswood’s STAR CURSED

And, of course, there are so many more… but this is supposed to just be a Top Ten List and with these extra boys I’m now up to twenty.

    Best ____ of 2013

Last year I chose favorite quotes. But this year I’m going for CHARACTER COUPLES. Even though many of this year’s reads paired up characters I’d rather see paired with someone else, there were quite a few character couples I love, love, loved.

And instead of rambling about all of my reasons why I love these character couples I thought I’d let the characters speak for themselves. They do a much better job of it than I ever could. Though I’m so very tempted to chime in…

    line2

    Favorite Character Couples 2013

    1.

    Shadowfever

SHADOWFEVER (Fever #5) by Karen Marie Moning

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Mac and Barrons…

“I’m not the hero, Mac. Never have been. Never will be. Let us be perfectly clear: I’m not the antihero, either, so quit waiting to discover my hidden potential. There’s nothing to redeem me.”

    I want him anyway.

It’s what he wanted to know.

I exhale impatiently and shove hair from my face. “Are you going to talk me to death or fuck me, Jericho Barrons?”

    2.

    Endless Knight

ENDLESS KNIGHT (The Aracana Chronicles #2) by Kresley Cole

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Evie and Death…

“What are you thinking about, creature?” His words were husky.

Licking your runes? Thank God he couldn’t read my thoughts anymore. Face flushing, I grasped for something to say. “I bet you were expecting a taller Empress this time around.” Lame.

“I would change nothing about your appearance.”

When we locked eyes in the mirror, his burning gaze made even more heat cascade through my body.

Death rose with that lethal grace and strode toward me. I swallowed. Would he try to kiss me? And what would I do if he did?

    3.

    Through the Zombie Glass

THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS (White Rabbit Chronicles #2) by Gena Showalter

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Alice and Cole…

“I just… I can’t seem to stay away. You’re like a magnet, and I’m drawn. And what about you? You’re supposed to yell at me, scream profanities and tell me to go and never come back. Why aren’t you yelling?” he asked almost bitterly.

Because, despite everything, I liked that he was here.

    Foolish girl.

“You want me to yell?” I said, and drew in a deep breath, preparing. “I will.”

He shook his head, looked up at me through the thick shield of those dark, dark lashes. “It’s too late for that. I’m going to kiss you, Ali.”

Kiss… Yes… No! “You made your bed.”

“I know. But I still want you in it.”

    4.

    With All My Soul

WITH ALL MY SOUL (Soul Screamers #7) by Rachel Vincent

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Kaylee and Tod…

“This is the most frighteningly beautiful mouth I have ever seen. The most terrifyingly delicious lips I have ever tasted. These lips make me hungry for more every time I kiss them. This mouth, and the tongue inside it…they speak words I hang on to. Words that make me want to be a better man. Words I would gladly build my entire afterlife around. But they also say things that terrify me. Things that send chills all the way to my heart. They speak about dangers I can’t prevent. Threats I can’t always see. They threaten to do things that could get you hurt, when every single beat of my heart tells me that I need to protect you.”

I stared at him, stunned, and he leaned in to kiss me again, softly. Almost chastely.

    5.

    Crash Into You

CRASH INTO YOU (Pushing the Limits #3) by Katie McGarry

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Isaiah and Rachel…

Rachel tries to lower her head, but I reach up and touch her chin. “Don’t.”

I tilt her head up, engulfing her line of vision. She’s going to see me and me alone. No cars, no Zach, none of the other assholes trying to win her eye during the night. The sweet scent of jasmine entwining with the salty smell of the beach rushes into my lungs. I lick my lips, wanting to kiss her, but I’m too full of energy to dare let my lips brush hers.

Beneath my fingertips, her pulse beats wildly. “I don’t understand you, Isaiah.”

“Then we have something in common, because I don’t get you at all.”

    6.

    Sweet Peril Cover

SWEET PERIL (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Anna and Kaidan…

“For the record,” he ground out in a guttural whisper, “I was more myself with you during those three days than I’ve ever been with anyone in my life. It’d be easier if I could be fake with you, but you bring out everything in me, little Ann. All of it.”

His sudden fierceness frightened and excited me. He was not in his right mind. I blinked several times before taking a step back and running into the rail. I could do nothing but stare as he went on.

    7.

    Foreplay

FOREPLAY (The Ivy Chronicles #1) by Sophie Jordan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Pepper and Reece…

He gave my sweatshirt a small tug, inexorably pulling me toward him, bit by bit, and it was like the other night again. His presence was overwhelming, the heat that emanated from him. The blue of his eyes that seemed to turn to smoke when he looked at me. I was under his spell. Maybe I had never ceased to be. I’d been spellbound since our first kiss and especially since the night I spent in his loft. Maybe this was what had brought me back here in the middle of the night. Maybe I was hoping to repeat the experience.

“I’ll never lie to you, Pepper.” That soft utterance blew through me like a sonic blast. Crazy, but I heard more than his vow to be honest. The words were full of the expectation that there would be a him and me, an us. That we were really doing this. Whatever this was.

    8.

    While You're Away

WHILE YOU’RE AWAY by Jessa Holbrook

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Sarah and Will…

It was easy to kiss Will Spencer. We moved in tandem, both turning at the same time. It was like we were machined to fit together, the right key in the right lock. Rising on my toes to meet his mouth, I looped my arms around his neck. Stretched against him, I felt long and tall, and strangely lovely. I wasn’t transformed by his touch. I was revealed.

    9.

    The Beautiful and the Cursed

THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED (The Disposessed #1) by Page Morgan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Ingrid and Luc…

Ingrid froze as he grazed his fingers through her hair, scattering a few pins to the floor. Then he gripped the back of her head, his tangled fingers tugging at her hair, and Ingrid thought she could finally read something in the way he looked at her: a longing so tangible that it made her ache.

“I haven’t ended you because you’re my human.”

And then Luc did what he hadn’t done in the orangery. His lips found hers. It was a light sweep of a kiss, and Ingrid, who’d quit breathing, feared he was going to stop again. The idea of it knifed through her and her hands itched to reach up, latch on to him, and refuse the retreat.

    It didn’t come to that.

    10.

    The Collector

THE COLLECTOR (The Collector #1) by Victoria Scott

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Dante and Charlie…

“But you need to know the truth. I didn’t mean for this to happen.” I stop, considering what I just said. “Actually, I guess I did mean for this to happen. At first. But then I got to know you, Charlie. I got to see how you are, the things you do for other people. The way you smile when there’s nothing left to smile about, and the way you laugh…it hurts to even hear it. Because it reminds me what it’s like to live. To be happy.” I take a deep breath. “You are beautiful, Charlie. You’re so beautiful, and I can’t believe I let you think you weren’t.”

I turn around but focus on the ground. I can’t see her face. It’ll end me. But my eyes are deceitful, and before I can gouge them from my face, they slide up and land on her. On Charlie. And she’s crying. Tears rolling down her cheeks, sliding into a wide, happy smile.

Best Books I’ve Read in 2013

I read a ton of awesome books this year. Many from the same series by the same author. But as I was trying so very hard to keep my list to just ten, I decided to choose only one book from each series, even if I read multiple books in a particular series that I thought were amazing.

And I couldn’t list all my favorite reads this year since one or two of them were a secret. Nor could I list all the 2013 releases I love, love, loved since I read some of them in 2012. But I’m not too sad about that, because reading them last year made creating this list just a little bit easier.

There were also a few books I loved in 2013 that were not YA. But in keeping with my typical YA only “best” list, I didn’t include them in this post. Though I plan on posting my non-YA favorites on The Annex. Yes, I’m cheating just a little… as usual. But I just can’t seem to help myself.

    Anyway…

It took me ages to narrow my list down from my original picks and to keep my “honorable mentions” to only four titles, just like last year. But after much hair pulling and nail-biting I was able to get it done.

    line2

The Best I’ve Read in 2013

    1.

    With All My Soul

WITH ALL MY SOUL by Rachel Vincent

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

As sad as I was to see this series end, I still couldn’t help falling madly in love with this last installment. It was heartbreaking and nerve-wracking and exciting and heartwarming and I loved every single minute of the read.

I especially loved the fact that I was able to become intrigued by a brand new character, that the story wasn’t rushed and that the ending didn’t leave me feeling like something was missing. It was the perfect ending to an amazing series and I couldn’t have loved it any more than I did.

    2.

    Endless Knight

    ENDLESS KNIGHT by Kresley Cole

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Kresley Cole’s Arcana Chronicles are completely and totally amazing. They are so my kind of books. From beginning to end in both books in this series I was utterly riveted.

And while I didn’t think it was possible, this second book in the series was even more exciting than the first. It was darker, it was hotter, it was all sorts of sexy. The lore was fascinating. And it made me fall head-over-heels in love with Death just like I hoped it would.

To say that I am dying for the next installment in this series would be a major understatement.

    3.

    Through the Zombie Glass

THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS by Gena Showalter

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I read both books in this series in 2013 and absolutely loved both of them. They were unputdownable reads and I couldn’t have been more surprised by the fact that I fell so completely in love with zombie books that gave a nod to Alice in Wonderland.

Gena Showalter was incredibly creative with her stories. She did not skimp on the action. It was edge-of-your-seat exciting. And the love story was angst-filled and twisty-turny to the max.

And as I opted to choose just one of the two books in this series as a favorite, I had to select the one that absolutely killed me in the best possible way.

    4.

    The Eternity Cure

THE ETERNITY CURE by Julie Kagawa

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I did not expect to love the Blood of Eden series more than I loved the author’s faerie books. But oh my gosh I couldn’t help myself. Dystopia and vampires are an unexpected combination but one that the author made work so amazingly well.

The characters, the epic journey, the killer cliffhanger all worked together to make this one of my favorite books and not simply a 2013 favorite. I’m talking all-time favorite.

    5.

    Crash Into You

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I fell under Katie McGarry’s spell in 2013. She is a fan-freaking-tastic writer and her Pushing the Limits series is one of my very most favorite contemporary YA series.

I read all three books in this series, plus the novella, in 2013, which made it very hard to choose only one of the books for my top ten list. But I had to choose Isaiah and Rachel’s story, even though I adored Noah and Echo’s story so, so much.

Perhaps it was getting to know and love Isaiah before reading his story that made me love it that much more. Or perhaps it’s simply just that Isaiah is amazing. But whatever the reason, it is my favorite of the series and it’s definitely one of my favorite reads from 2013.

    6.

    Afterglow

    AFTERGLOW by Karsten Knight

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I was devastated to see this series end. The world that Karsten Knight created was so unique and fascinating and exciting. The characters were lovable and detestable and completely and totally kick-a**. And this final installment in the series was just as phenomenal as its predecessors.

And that ending. Oh. My. Gosh. That ending. While I can’t talk about that ending, I will just say that it gives me hope. For a certain character. Oh the possibilities.

    7.

    Star Cursed Cover

    STAR CURSED by Jessica Spotswood

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I was so glad that I got the chance to read both books in The Cahill Witch Chronicles this year. I was completely surprised by how much I loved each of the books. They are not stories in my typical go-to genre and yet both books are among my most favorites.

I couldn’t help but fall in love with the story, the setting, the characters. It’s a totally addictive read and one that’s definitely re-read worthy. Though even after a re-read, it’s no easier to have to wait for the next installment in the series. This I know all too well.

    8.

    The Beautiful and the Cursed

THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED by Page Morgan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Yet another unexpected favorite on my list is Page Morgan’s THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED. If someone told me that I could fall in love with a gargoyle I would have totally rolled my eyes at them. I might have even told them that they were crazy. I would have definitely thought it.

Well, this author made me not only fall in love with a gargoyle, but her story about them. The sequel is one of my most anticipated reads for 2014. And the wait is killing me.

    9.

    While You're Away

WHILE YOU’RE AWAY by Jessa Holbrook

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I read this book in its serialized format, with just a few chapters available to read in one sitting. It was exquisite torture. This story was tantalizing and nerve-wracking and beautiful and nerve-wracking – yes I said it twice, but it needed to be said two times… if not more.

I was made to root for a love story that I never would have thought I’d cheer for. I was made to wish and hope for a happily ever after for two characters who, at first, I didn’t think deserved one. I was anxious, I was fearful, I was tentatively hopeful and at times I was even sad. But I was keeping my fingers crossed the entire time for the slim chance that things would work out.

    10.

    A Touch Menacing

A TOUCH MENACING by Leah Clifford

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Leah Clifford’s Touch Trilogy is one of my favorite series of all time. It’s so very different from anything I’ve ever read. It’s very dark. It is full of surprises. Shocking surprises. Devastating surprises. But it is wicked, wicked awesome.

The end of this final installment in the series left me in tears. And, no, I won’t say whether they’re happy or sad tears. But if you have read this book or you’ve read any of the books in this series by this author I think you will know exactly what kind of tears there were.

This last book was non-stop action, with more than a few punches to the face. I couldn’t devour it fast enough. It was that epic. And if I didn’t think it could get any better, the unpublished epilogue made this book that much more off-the-charts amazing for me. Holy-freaking-wow.

Other Books I Love, Love, Loved

    SweetPeril

    SWEET PERIL by Wendy Higgins

Exciting. Sexy as heck. Captivating from start to finish. Delicious. An absolute must.

    The Testing

    THE TESTING by Joelle Charbonneau

Gripping. Surprising. Totally addictive. A total stand-out.

    The Burning Sky

THE BURNING SKY by Sherry Thomas

Magical. Enchanting. Captivating. Epic. Fan-freaking-tastically good.

    Pivot Point

    PIVOT POINT by Kasie West

    Intriguing. Nerve-wracking. Unputdownable. Amazing.

    Review: With All My Soul

    With All My Soul

    addtogoodreads

WITH ALL MY SOUL by Rachel Vincent releases in the U.S. today, March 26, 2013, in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin TEEN, the print edition is 384 pages.

WITH ALL MY SOUL is the seventh and final full-length book in author Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers series.

    Line_001

    Goodreads description…

What does it mean when your school is voted the most dangerous in America? It’s time to kick some hellion butt…

After not really surviving her junior year (does “undead” count as survival?), Kaylee Cavanaugh has vowed to take back her school from the hellions causing all the trouble. She’s going to find a way to turn the incarnations of Avarice, Envy and Vanity against one another in order to protect her friends and finish this war, once and forever.

But then she meets Wrath and understands that she’s closer to the edge than she’s ever been. And when one more person close to her is taken, Kaylee realizes she can’t save everyone she loves without risking everything she has….

    Line_001

WITH ALL MY SOUL is the stunning conclusion to the Soul Screamers series by author Rachel Vincent. With an intriguing new character and a new mortal sin, a gripping storyline and a shocking turn of events, this final installment is an exhilarating, heartrending and epic finish to this must-read series.

No matter how hard she fights and no matter how great the risk to herself, Kaylee Cavanaugh has not been able to defeat the hellion that wants her soul. With each loss hitting closer to home, Kaylee is not sure how many more people she cares about she can bear to lose, especially knowing that she’s the one Avari really wants.

And when he takes someone she loves, someone whose life she is not willing to risk, she must quickly find a way to stop him once and for all or be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. Because Avari has nothing but time, has nothing to lose and will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

Action-packed, electrifying and at times heartbreaking, WITH ALL MY SOUL takes readers on one last journey with Kaylee Cavanaugh as she faces off against a seemingly unstoppable enemy that has pursued her through life and the afterlife. With anger as her motivation and an unlikely ally, Kaylee’s greatest challenge yet will keep readers on the edge of their seats and their eyes glued to the page as events unfold and lead up to the book’s dramatic conclusion.

Author Rachel Vincent has once again put her characters through an incredible ordeal and taken her readers on a roller coaster ride of emotion in WITH ALL MY SOUL. Filled with exciting plot twists and turns, dialogue that is both heartfelt and moving and sarcastic and amusing, and a nail-biting build-up to an outcome that is heart-stopping, this last installment in the series can only be called phenomenal.

The author does not leave readers hanging at the story’s end. All loose-ends have been tied up and all the larger questions about the remaining characters have been answered. And while the story wraps up in a way that will satisfy those readers who like to say their goodbyes and move on, it does allow for the reader’s imagination to go beyond the story and look into the futures of those characters that do remain, for those readers that aren’t quite ready.

WITH ALL MY SOUL is the perfect finish to this always entertaining, always surprising and always thrilling series.

And this story and series is a must for readers who want to discover a world that is unique, writing that is engaging, clever and oftentimes breathtaking, a plot that is suspense-, danger- and tension-filled, a heroine that is incredibly brave, selfless and relatable, and a love story that is eternal.

    Reviewer gives this book…

    06menu

Like In-N-Out Burger‘s infamous secret menu this one deserves my off-the-menu 6 star rating.

    On a personal note…

If I had a million words at my disposal instead of the meager few that seem to rattle around my brain when sitting down to compose my thoughts, even then I don’t think I could come up with the appropriate combination to express just what this series has meant to me or just how truly amazing I think it is.

And this final installment, this final chapter in these characters’ lives, has been no less of a roller coaster than its predecessors, no less heartbreaking, nail-biting, tension-filled, bittersweet, heart-rending. It was a phenomenal ending to an absolutely riveting series that just got better and better as it progressed.

WITH ALL MY SOUL was everything I’d hoped it would be in a series-ending book. I had incredibly high expectations that I wasn’t entirely sure could be met. And yet they were. Met. And surpassed.

I did not expect to get so caught up in the story that I’d forget this was a series-ending book. I did not expect to fall for a newly introduced character. I did not expect to be surprised by how things came together at the end. And I did not expect the ending when it arrived, all too quickly.

I expected tears. And yes there were tears. From the moment I began the last quarter of the book until the story’s end I could not stop tearing up. Every sentence felt like a goodbye. A goodbye I was not ready for. Every heartfelt passage was bittersweet, heartbreaking.

Every action, every page, brought me one step closer to the end. And after having been so distracted by the events taking place in the first three-fourths of the story, the realization that this series was coming to a close made every single thing that happened in that final fourth that much more emotional.

And it still didn’t prepare me for the end… a part of which continues to haunt me even after a re-read.

I expected a roller coaster. And there was definitely one of those. I expected sarcasm, dialogue that would make me grin, a brave, stubborn and fiercely protective heroine and a mortal sin that would make this story explosive. And I got all of that and then some.

I expected to fall in love with this final book in the series. And Rachel Vincent made it just so easy to do so. It was so easy to once again get lost in Kaylee’s world as she prepared to face just one more obstacle to a happily ever afterlife. It was so easy to be captivated by her characters – some charming, some horrifying, some a little bit of both.

And it was so easy to connect with Kaylee, who was every bit as strong and determined and sarcastic as she’d been throughout the series, but who also displayed a confidence she didn’t previously possess.

I couldn’t have been more proud of, more fearful for, more heartsick for, more in awe of who Kaylee became by the end of this series. A character who I liked right from the start was one that I absolutely adored by the end.

While I won’t reveal whether Kaylee gets a happy ending… or even if she makes it to the end of this book… I will just say that I loved every single moment of WITH ALL MY SOUL. Even the moments that broke my heart.

And no, I would not change a single thing about this book… well… except for the fact that it is a series-ending book. It was just that out-of-this-world amazing. It is just that unforgettable.

    Favorite passage…

I had more than a few favorite passages. Some passages were actually paragraphs that spanned pages. So finding a favorite passage that was short enough to include in this post wasn’t easy. So I chose two.

And while I would have loved to include a certain quote from Avari from page 63 or one from Ira from page 82 – both of which were beautifully written – or one of the many lengthier passages about a certain Reaper (especially pages 299, 312-315, 322, 364), as they would be best discovered within the context of the story I thought I’d share these instead.

“So you really did grow up on cookies and cake. I knew it.”

“That’s why I’m so sweet now. I have no idea what went wrong with Nash.”

    And…

“Take a nice, long look at your future, reaper. You’ll soon be burning as fuel for hundreds of tiny fires.”

Tod laughed out loud. “If that’s your way of saying I’m hot, rest assured, I already know.”

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #117

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of March 26th-April 1st that I have pre-ordered.

    05

    With All My Soul

    addtogoodreads

WITH ALL MY SOUL by Rachel Vincent will be released in the U.S. on March 26, 2013 in paperback and eBook formats.

    Line_001

I cannot believe that March 26th is finally just about here and with it the release day for the final book in the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent. I’ve been super lucky to have been able to read WITH ALL MY SOUL last month and I cannot believe this series is really over… or will be in just a couple of days.

I’ve already spotlighted WITH ALL MY SOUL for my Book Watch post and because I’ve already read it I won’t go on and on about it for too long in this post. But I will just quickly say that this final book in the series is every bit as awesome as its predecessors.

It is just as exciting, if not more so, than earlier books in the series. It doesn’t fall victim to a lengthy series’ shortcomings. And it has all the allure, tension, heartbreak, anguish and nail-biting suspense as is expected from a book by author Rachel Vincent.

And the way it ends… well, I won’t talk about that.

But I am so happy-sad for this title’s upcoming release. And I can’t wait for it to download to my Kindle on Monday Midnight so that I can read it again and again without worrying about damaging my gorgeous print copy.

    Wasteland

    addtogoodreads

WASTELAND by Susan Kim and Laurence Klavan will be released in the U.S. on March 26, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 336 pages.

WASTELAND is the first book in a new series by the authors. No information on the sequel is currently available.

    Line_001

I have heard that WASTELAND is an awesome book and was told that this story is one that I absolutely must read. So I requested an eARC for review and pre-ordered a copy for my Kindle. And while I was not able to read WASTELAND just yet, I definitely plan on reading it soon after its release.

I cannot wait to dive into this post-apocalyptic world where “no one lives past the age of nineteen.” I can’t wait to meet Esther and Caleb and discover who can and can’t be trusted and what “shady pasts” are affecting the present.

This future sounds absolutely despairing and yet incredibly fascinating and I am super excited that it’s releasing this week and that it’s the start of a trilogy. I only hope that if there is a cliffhanger ending it won’t be too torturous. Especially since I will be reading it soon and the date for the sequel is not yet known.

    {Not a YA title}

    Dweller on the Threshold

    addtogoodreads

DWELLER ON THE THRESHOLD by Rinda Elliott will be released in the U.S. on March 26, 2013 in eBook format. It is currently available to pre-order online in eBook format only at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Samhain Publishing, the print edition is 298 pages.

DWELLER ON THE THRESHOLD is the first book in Rinda Elliott’s Beri O’Dell series. The second book in the series, BLOOD OF AN ANCIENT, is slated for release in October 2013.

    Line_001
I’ve only recently learned that author Rinda Elliott’s DWELLER ON THE THRESHOLD was releasing this week and that it was available to pre-order for my Kindle. But I do have it pre-ordered and I am so excited that it’s sharing a book birthday with Rachel Vincent’s book.

I was super lucky to have received an eARC for review from the author this past week and I just had to set aside one of my planned reads so that I could devour this book before its release. Especially since I read the prologue – which was awesome – and I just had to find out more.

As I am in the middle of reading it and don’t want to reveal too much about the book, I’ll just say that my curiosity about the main character, Beri O’Dell, was piqued after having read the description. Like Beri, I wanted to know what she was and why she had the abilities she did.

I wanted to meet Beri’s spirit guides and see just how a “pyro-nervous witch” and an “androgynous necromancer” fit into this story. And I wanted to meet Nikolos, the “handsome Minoan warrior” that knows exactly what the Dweller on the Threshold is.

So of course I had to pre-order this book. And having read quite a bit of it already, I will just say that so far Beri is an awesome main character and I cannot wait to see what else she gets up to over the course of this book and series.

    02

There are quite a few books releasing this week, though I only have three books pre-ordered, and only two of them are YA titles. But I am almost positive I will be ordering GOING VINTAGE when it releases on Tuesday and IMPOSTOR, since I own the first book in that series.

As I have read two of the three books I have on order before release day, I don’t think I’ll feel too guilty about adding a few more titles to my “buy” list. Having only one pre-ordered book going on the TBR pile leaves a little bit of room to add at least a couple more. Right?

Though I do have quite a few books on order for the week of April 2nd, so I probably shouldn’t go too crazy. But books are my addiction and they’re not one I plan on curing any time soon.

    Anyway…

I hope that the books you’ve pre-ordered arrive on, or close to, release date. I’ve heard there were delays in last week’s shipment of CLOCKWORK PRINCESS, so I hope that if you have a few books on order, they don’t meet that same fate.

A happy book birthday week to all the books releasing this week and, as always, I wish you a happy week of book acquisitions!

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

With All My Soul Mini-Reading Challenge Begins

    WithAllMySoul_minibanner

I cannot believe that in just one short week from today Rachel Vincent’s WITH ALL MY SOUL, the final book in her Soul Screamers series, will be releasing. As excited as I am for it to hit the shelves – both physical and electronic – I am so very sad that it will officially mark the end of this amazing series.

Yes, I’ve already read it, and I know exactly how things end. But because its release was still forthcoming, it felt very much like maybe, just maybe it wasn’t over. And yes, I am still holding out hope that there will be another novella or two in the series… sort of a “where are they now” story that will give us just another peek into the characters’ lives and into this amazing world the author has so brilliantly crafted over the past few years.

And yes, I’m also sad that this will be my last reading challenge as pertains to the Soul Screamers series. But we’ve reached the final sin and unless “they” determine there are a few more sins of that calibre, it’s likely this series won’t be resurrected. Of course, I am ever hopeful.

    Line_001

    The Challenge

I know that WITH ALL MY SOUL won’t be releasing until next week… but when I decided to host this challenge the release date was listed as March 19th. And I decided not to change the date as it’s also very likely that a few readers might have been able to get their hands on it prior to its release. To my knowledge, WITH ALL MY SOUL has not been embargoed.

    So…

If you haven’t yet signed up for the reading challenge, CLICK HERE for all the details and to leave your link to sign up.

The giveaway associated with that post has closed, but there is a giveaway for those challenge participants who read WTIH ALL MY SOUL and link their reviews and/or book thoughts posts in the Linky List below.

You have until APRIL 30th, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific to read it, review it and leave your link to be entered into the giveaway.

There is no minimum or maximum length required for your review. Nor does your review have to be in English. And there is no set format for how you choose to review. However, it has to be clear enough to anyone who reads it that the book has actually been read. I do check out all reviews for challenge participants!

AND, if there are going to be spoilers for the book in your review, PLEASE state that in the Linky List entry below.

    That’s it!

Good luck to everyone! While the challenge might not seem that challenging, saying goodbye to a well-loved series and its characters is HARD! So I completely understand those who might have already signed up but just can’t take that next step.

But… this just means that now the author, Rachel Vincent, can create new characters for us to love, hate, angst over, suffer along with. Of course, if you’re like me, and you also have taken that journey with her characters in the Unbound series, you’ll have one more goodbye to say before being able to say hello to her next endeavor.

UPDATE: This post has been updated with the challenge winners….

Thank you so much to everyone who participated AND managed to read WITH ALL MY SOUL and write their review during the challenge period! Reading it was hard enough… oh my gosh… but wrangling thoughts? Practically impossible.

I am so sorry that not everyone could get a prize for being a participant, but I do have a few winners to announce.

For Giveaway #1 – $50 in Books of Your Choice – the winner is #10 Lena Reve @ Between Fantasy and Reality

For Giveaway #1 – $25 in Books of Your Choice – the winner is #21 YA Book Crush

For Giveaway #2 – A copy of OATH BOUND – the winners are:

Kt, Julie S., Teresa @ Readers Live A Thousand Lives, Jen @ Book Exhibitionism

I will be contacting you all by email.

It makes me so sad to say goodbye to this series, but as Rachel Vincent is an amazing author, I just know that she has other characters and worlds for us all to meet and fall in love with.

Thank you all so much again for being a part of this challenge, whether it was just for this book’s challenge or for the SSRC and the BIW Reading Challenges last year. Just knowing there are fans out there who have loved these characters as much as I have means the world!
