Welcome to the second edition of Quarter Talk.* For those of you who are not familiar with it, Quarter Talk is a new feature that I started here on Fiktshun in Q1 2013.
It’s a quarterly post – hence the name – where I check in with five to ten bloggers to see how they answer the following five questions about favorite reads from the past quarter, anticipated reads from the upcoming quarter, recommended debuts, trends and covers.
(If you’d like to check out last quarter’s Quarter Talk post, you can find it HERE.)
Q1. What has been your favorite read during the second quarter of 2013 (April-June)?
Q2. What is your most anticipated book releasing in July-September 2013?
Q3. What debut book/author released in Q2 2013 would you recommend?
Q4. What genre/sub-genre/trend do you think was “hot” during the second quarter of this year?
Q5. What is your favorite cover of Q2 2013?
While the blogger participants may change, the questions will remain the same. And on or around the 15th of the month after each end of Quarter there will be a new post where the bloggers I’ve invited will share their thoughts.
I will attempt to include a somewhat diverse, but small, group of bloggers in order to get a representative sampling of what’s “hot” and what’s on their radars each quarter. Therefore not all titles will be YA.
*Credit for the name Quarter Talk goes to Rachel of Parajunkee Design who created the banner. She came up with this title when I drew a blank as to the name I’d originally decided upon and couldn’t come up with a clever alternative when put on the spot.

What has been your favorite read during the second quarter of 2013 (April-June)?
I have been in a huge reading slump this quarter! But my favorite book I’ve read was THE BITTER KINGDOM by Rae Carson. Yeah I read it way ahead of time couldn’t help it. It was the perfect finish to one of my favorite series 🙂
YA- Hands down, THE ETERNITY CURE by Julie Kagawa. I loved the first book, but this one was even better in my opinion. It seamlessly balances character development and heart pounding action along with staggering emotions in perfect proportions. There wasn’t a single dull moment in this book. In fact, I’d give just about anything to get my hands on the next installment right now.
Adult- Another easy one to choose, my adult pick is MAGIC RISES by Ilona Andrews. I love love love this series, and each new installment is better than the last. In fact this one blew me out of the water, even as it left me an emotional wreck due to the massive relationship turbulence and hard blows dealt. Frankly, it is an incredible read from start to finish.
I REALLY tried to pick only one… But I just COULDN’T!!! It was utterly impossible I tell you!!!
PAINT ME BEAUTIFUL by C.M. Stunich … I just recently discovered C.M. Stunich when I read LOSING ME, FINDING YOU. Since then I’ve devoured the Never series and PAINT ME BEAUTIFUL. She is a fabulous author, but PAINT ME BEAUTIFUL held a deeper meaning for me. This book ripped my heart out, and I just can’t say enough about it.
A GAME OF THRONES by George R.R. Martin … I have been LITERALLY drowning in this series since I began! Usually epic-type fantasy books are not my thing at all, but the Song of Fire and Ice series is ridiculously addictive and absolutely AMAZING!!!!
A DIFFERENT BLUE by Amy Harmon … WOW! Seriously, anyone who hasn’t read this book – I beg you to drop what you are doing and begin immediately! Blue Echohawk’s story is one I STILL randomly think on at the oddest times for no reason at all. It’s raw, tragic, highly emotional and real!
The best book I have read this past quarter, hands-down, is VICIOUS by Victoria Schwab. Even though it will not be released until Q3 (September 24) I had the opportunity to read it early – and I am so glad to have read it. VICIOUS is Victoria’s first venture outside of writing for young adults, and I must say, I think that she has polished her skills for this spectacular “adult” debut. Her story about two college student’s thesis gone “wring”, turns all of our ideas about what it means to be a “hero” up-side-down and inside-out. I cannot recommend it enough.
Runners up in the “young adult” category include: SIEGE AND STORM by Leigh Bardugo, THE 5TH WAVE by Rick Yancey and NOT A DROP TO DRINK by Mindy McGinnis (another Q3 release).
That’s a tough question. I have a couple that are at the TOP of my favorite list for the second quarter – THE SPACE BETWEEN by Kristie Cook, REBOOT by Amy Tintera, and ONE TINY SECRET by Adam Kunz. There are a few others I could add to this list but these three stands out the most, the ones that I still find myself thinking about. I’d love to do nothing more but sit down and reread all three of these right now.
DARE YOU TO by Katie McGarry, definitely and without a question.
Trust me, it doesn’t have to do with the fact that I haven’t been able to read a lot of the new releases this past quarter.
I guess my review pretty much says it. I fell completely in love with the story and I loved it WAY more than the first book. It was THE book for me right along with THIS GIRL by Colleen Hoover who has just… I’m left speechless. She’s too talented for my eyes and yet I cannot get enough of her books.
HEART OF VENOM by Jennifer Estep (eArc, releases August 27th)
It was Gin at her bloodiest!
This is such a hard question, so I’m gonna have to cheat and name two 🙂
I didn’t expect to love GOLDEN by Jessi Kirby as much as I did! It was such an unexpected love and has easily become one of my favourite reads of this quarter and of the year probably!
The other one that I cannot possibly leave out is SIEGE AND STORM by Leigh Bardugo. SO MUCH LOVE for this book!! It was even better than SHADOW AND BONE and AAAH! STURMHOND!!! I cannot stop gushing about this book!
This is a crazy hard question! It’s so hard to pick but I am going to pick two from different genres. My pick from the paranormal genre is SHADOW AND BONE by Leigh Bardugo. I know I was a bit late to the game on this one, but I’ve always been a huge fan of Russia and I love how this is set in a fantasy Russian land. The writing is gorgeous and the Darking…yummy. 🙂
My pick from the contemporary genre would hands-down be DARE YOU TO by Katie McGarry. This book is nitty gritty and totally real. This shows that opposites can really attract and ignite. I am so stoked for Isaiah’s story!
Oh! Wow!!! I just realized that I’ve read some pretty awesome amazing books in this quarter! It’s hard to choose. THE 5TH WAVE by Rick Yancey and THE TESTING by Joelle Charbonneau have to be my top 2 most faves. But I also absolutely loved both of the first two books in The Selection by Kiera Cass (THE SELECTION, THE ELITE), THE PROGRAM by Suzanne Young was WOW, and TEN TINY BREATHS by K.A. Tucker was amazing too! Oh and ELEANOR AND PARK by Rainbow Rowell hit it pretty high up there for me too. OMG! Did I forget ANGELFALL by Susan Ee? That book was insane!
What is your most anticipated book releasing in July-September 2013?
Ah there’s so many! But I’d have to say THE DREAM THIEVES by Maggie Stiefvater!
Books that I have an ARC of, but haven’t read yet:
YA- CONSUME by Melissa Darnell – I’m pretty sure this is the final book in the series, so I’m both very excited and very nervous to see how everything ends up. I just love the blending of witch and vampire mythologies, with a little forbidden romance thrown in.
Adult- BITING BAD by Chloe Neill – Merit and Ethan. I mean what more needs to be said?
Books that I have to wait for release day for. 🙁
YA- ANTIGODDESS by Kendare Blake – I LOVED her Anna Dressed in Blood series, so I’ve been pretty anxious to read something else she’s written. Add in the fact that it’s about greek mythology, and I was sold.
Adult- BLOOD BOND by Jeanne C. Stein- This is the final book in the Anna Strong series, and I can’t wait to see how the journey ends!
FIRE & ASH by Jonathan Maberry (Benny Imura #4)!!!
I am a little bit of a Benny Imura SUPER fangirl!!! I am fully and TOTALLY invested in the lives of these characters… and I was MAYBE A TAD disappointed with the way FLESH & BONE ended – so I’m really curious to see whether Maberry will redeem himself or force hubs to go on suicide watch if I happen to be disappointed again!
Tough choice. I will stick to a book I have not read yet, since I have already read the highly anticipated WHERE THE STARS STILL SHINE by Trish Doller, FANGIRL by Rainbow Rowell and, of course, VICIOUS by Victoria Schwab.
I think my most highly anticipated book in Q3 is CROWN OF MIDNIGHT by Sarah J. Maas. I just recently (finally) read THRONE OF GLASS and was *blown away*… I was absolutely and completely enthralled by the world, the characters, the magic and the mystery. Trust me, guys, this is fantasy at its best. And to think that there are already four prequel novellas and a total of FIVE anticipated full-length books in the series… I look forward to many more years of adventure with Calaena, Chaol, Dorian and the rest of this complex ensemble cast of characters.
I can’t WAIT for THE COLDEST GIRL IN COLDTOWN by Holly Black, ORIGIN by Jennifer L. Armentrout, 3:59 by Gretchen McNeil and as always, this list could go on and on and on…. So many books coming out, so little time and money!
Argh, I just became a Colleen Hoover hardcore fan so I’m going with LOSING HOPE by her even if the book might be out by the time this post goes live and even though I haven’t read the book prior to this one. Same goes for THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US by Kasie West, FIFTH GRAVE PAST THE LIGHT by Darynda Jones. Oh my!! There are so many and as it is known I’m bad with release dates I’m not blushing as much.
I’m pretty sure FRIGID by J. Lynn comes out on July so I’m really looking forward to that one as well.
And August, INTO THE DEEP by Samantha Young 😀 So excited!
OF COURSE for September? GOLD by Talia Vance.
ELYSIAN FIELDS by Suzanne Johnson (August 13th)
I can’t wait to see what trouble DJ gets into this time around.
OMG, SO MANY!
First off: THE BITTER KINGDOM by Rae Carson. I have already read this book and it is AMAZING! Everyone go read it and love it and GAH just talk to me about it!!
Another one that I’m insanely excited about is CROWN OF MIDNIGHT by Sarah J. Maas! I’ve been PINING for this book for ages and I cannot wait till a shiny finished copy finally makes it’s way into my hands!
This one is a tie. This first one I am so excited for is A DARKNESS STRANGE AND LOVELY by Susan Dennard. I loved the first one and I’ve already heard amazing things about the sequel. Historical + zombies…perfection.
The second book I’m excited for is CROWN OF MIDNIGHT by Sarah J. Maas. THRONE OF GLASS is one of my favorite fantasy novels ever and I’ve heard this next one is just epic. And it has two really amazing guys. I can’t wait to see how it goes.
THE BITTER KINGDOM by Rae Carson and I was lucky to borrow a copy from a dear friend and I already just finished it. It was AMAZING! That series is AMAZING!
What debut book/author released in Q2 2013 would you recommend?
IN THE SHADOW OF BLACKBIRDS by Cat Winters, THE TESTING by Joelle Charbonneau, and THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED by Page Morgan. By far these three were my favorite of the debut authors! They are all amazing reads!
YA- Lauren Miller. I LOVED her debut release, PARALLEL. It simply was amazing the way she told the story and blended two worlds together.
Adult- I haven’t read any debut adult novels this quarter other than my Covet author’s fabulous books, like Tiffany Allee’s DON’T BITE THE BRIDESMAID, (not her debut in publishing, but it is her first full length book), or Susannah Scott’s LUCK OF THE DRAGON, etc. I could go on and on about these fabulous ladies’ books 🙂
Okay… So I suck AGAIN. I didn’t read any debut authors this quarter either!!! You’re totally going to ban me from Quarter Talk!! I need someone to assign me a debut to read for next quarter! Who wants the job?!?! Any takers?????
THE COLLECTOR by Victoria Scott (it’s a good year for Victoria’s, isn’t it?) What’s not to love about Dante, a male lead whose bite may actually be more dangerous than his snarky, convention-defying bark. This is an author to watch for, as her witty dialogue and ability to spin a good yarn are highly evident. I for one can say that I cannot wait for the next book in this series, THE LIBERATOR, to be released in Q3!
Without a doubt that’d have to be THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED by Page Morgan. What a thrilling, mysterious and beautifully written story! And about Gargoyles’ too!
Yay!! I read a couple of debut authors even if they aren’t from the huge publishers, I’m so excited hehe. And I’d recommend utterly and completely Michelle Kemper Brownlow’s book, IN TOO DEEP.
It made me cry and smile and it just wowed me in a way a lot of contemporary books haven’t been able to.
I just realised I haven’t actually read all that many debuts this quarter! But I really enjoyed THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL by Soman Chainani! It was really cute and I love a good tale set in a magical boarding school!
I totally recommend Leah Rae Miller, who wrote THE SUMMER I BECAME A NERD. It was such a cute and light summer read with a really adorkable guy. I can’t wait to see what else Leah has up her sleeve for us.
I’d have to say for sure THE TESTING by Joelle Charbonneau and ANGELFALL by Susan Ee.
What genre/sub-genre/trend do you think was “hot” during the second quarter of this year?
New Adult again boo for me since I’m not a reader of that genre.
Seems like New Adult is still really the thing right now, even if it isn’t what I’m personally looking for.
I would go with Comtemporary New Adult… It seems one out of every two authors are jumping on the New Adult band wagon. I get it… You can write more boldly, without fear of reprimand from the YA crowd, all while appealing to the large mass of ADULTS who read YA – while feeling as if they’re “missing” that little something. That “something” was sex. By slapping the genre label “New Adult” on a book, characters can be 17 and over, doing whatever – and the author can’t be attacked about it! And for the record, I’m totally down because I am SO over the paranormal craze. Even dystopians all started to run together for me!
New Adult is definitely on the rise. Everybody and their brother (or maybe not “their brother” since New Adult currently appears to be dominated by female writers) is getting in on this craze. I myself have recently fallen to the lure of these books. A few stand-outs include THE SEA OF TRANQUILITY by Katja Millay, FAKING IT by Cora Carmack and HOPELESS by Colleen Hoover.
I have to agree with my first quarter answer and say “New Adult.” I think it’s just starting to really take off and I can’t be more excited about all the publishers who are also starting to pick up more titles to publish in this category. I can’t wait to find a new book to read and the authors bring more exciting titles for all of us who LOVE “New Adult”! So, SO excited!!!
Oh god, I still believe the New Adult thing is going pretty strong but now I believe there’s some line being crossed because I feel those New Adults are more like “Adults” if you know what I mean.
But either way. New Adult, Contemporary and Adult books have been getting more famous by the second. It’s weird how one genre can almost completely overcome all the other ones.
I’ve seen more and more new releases in this genre. I’ve yet to read one but I have a few on my TBR.
Oh lord, I don’t really keep up with trends… But I think New Adult is still kind of a hot trend.
Scrolling through my TBR list (which is mostly YA), I noticed a lot of contemporaries released this quarter and there have been some more mysteries I guess. I’ve also noticed a surge in parallel or alternate realities/multiple futures.
Coverwise I think there’s a bit of a shift from ‘pretty girl in a dress’ to more experimentation with fonts.
I’ve seen so many YA dystopians releasing this quarter. THE PROGRAM by Suzanne Young, THE 5TH WAVE by Rick Yancey, THE RULES by Stacey Kade and RUSH by Eve Silver just to name a few. Everywhere I go, there are more coming out. I haven’t decided how I feel about this trend yet. We shall see.
Also, New Adult. I know this has been said so many times by pretty much everyone but I can’t help but vehemently agree. Yes, some of the story lines are overdone sometimes but I always usually have good luck finding books in this popular genre.
I think that Dystopia/Post Apocalypse has made another huge appearance for me…but I haven’t really been paying attention to what is hot with everyone else lately. :-\
What is your favorite cover of Q2 2013?
I really loved the cover of ICONS by Margaret Stohl too bad the book fell short for me :/
YA- PHOENIX by Elizabeth Richards. The feather on fire and the colors are just awesome.
A runner up would be TAKEN by Erin Bowman. The colors, setting, and elements of this cover are just gorgeous.
Adult- DARKNESS UNMASKED by Keri Arthur. Risa just looks so badass and her concrete looking wings are awesome!
And the runner up is DAMN HIM TO HELL by Jamie Quaid. Again, the colors drew me into this cover, but what I really love is the gas mask and the rifle. Makes me just want to read it. (Which I already did. 😉
I would say SIEGE AND STORM by Leigh Bardugo. Although I haven’t read this series, I have heard it is absolutely fantastic! The covers are so unique, as they don’t have a chick and some dude embracing and half dressed – like EVERY other cover available right now, that I’m tempted to start them THIS VERY MINUTE based solely on that! 😉
THE WARD by Jordana Frankel was one of my favorite covers of Q2. I have a thing for gorgeously detailed destruction, I think… Too bad the inside of the book did not deliver.
As for a book with a fabulous cover that did deliver? I would have to go with THE 5TH WAVE by Rick Yancey. It wasn’t until I met Rick in person and he explained numerous aspects with regard to the cover and overall book design that I fully appreciated the beauty of this book. It’s not just the cover that makes this book special, it is the attention to detail, the chapter headings, the section dividers, the texture… the entire package put together.
Plus, tell me this: Do you see the bird on the cover of THE 5TH WAVE?
Runner up: SIEGE AND STORM by Leigh Bardugo.
I think my favorite cover for the second quarter of 2013 would have to be THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED by Page Morgan. It’s so dramatic and the colors are perfect for the setting of the story and the back drop of Paris. It’s spectacular in person, both the cover AND the story so check it out!
Argh!!!!! I love love ASHES ON THE WAVES by Mary Lindsey book’s cover!! Seriously so beautiful.
I also love DANCE OF THE RED DEATH by Bethany Griffin, TIDAL by Amanda Hocking, THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS: ACT TWO by A.R. Kahler, and my FAVORITE FAVORITE!! BORN OF ILLUSION by Teri Brown O_O That cover is too perfect *O*
So many, sorry. I kind of got carried away.
MILA 2.0 by Debra Driza
I’ve not read it but the cover is very pretty.
I really loved the covers of both TAKEN by Erin Bowman and LINKED by Imogen Howson, though both books were a bit of a disappointment for me. Covers are gorgeous though.
I’m currently reading TARNISH by Katherine Longshore and I LOVE the hardcover cover art! Simple but effective.
And one I haven’t read yet but am dying to: AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED by Khaled Hosseini (I’m talking the purplish cover, GORGEOUS!)
THE ELITE by Kiera Cass. The colors, the dress, and the font all work amazingly together! Just beautiful. I’m excited to see book 3’s cover.
Probably DANCE OF THE RED DEATH and SIEGE AND STORM. Oh, and I also like PHOENIX by Elizabeth Richards. I’m also a fan of THE END GAMES cover.
There were some fairly popular favorite reads among the participating bloggers in Q2 and in their anticipated reads for the upcoming quarter. Epic Fantasy seems to be on the watch list both in this quarter and into the next. And even more than last quarter, New Adult seems to be the growing trend… and it doesn’t seem to be losing any steam. Cover love also seems to have moved away from girls in dresses, and illustrated covers or those with a bit of artistry seem to be the ones that catch most participating bloggers’ eyes.
What Do You Think?
So that’s what these ten bloggers think. But what about you?
Do you agree with any (or all) of their picks? Would you answer the questions differently if you were asked?
Is there a trend or genre/sub-genre that you think is “hot” right now that wasn’t mentioned? Or do you think the blogger participants covered all the bases?
Leave a comment if you do. I’d love to know!
And if you’d be interested in participating in the next Quarter Talk, coming October 15th, feel free to CONTACT ME.
