    Today’s topic is…

    Best Book Boyfriends of 2013

Ack! Once again the rules require that I choose my book boyfriends based upon books that were not only released in 2013 but that I read in 2013. So unfair! That means I can’t choose Barron’s or V’lane from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. *sobs* And I can’t choose Austin from Talia Vance’s GOLD.

A few of last year’s book boyfriends made the cut this year. But there are also a few new adds to the list.

And, yes, some of those bookish boyfriends were from the same book. Who says there has to be just one bookish boyfriend per book?

A Few Other Bookish Boys I Love

I have so many book boyfriends from the books I read. Most of them are the bad boys, but a few of them happen to be good. And if I had just a little more time this week to create these top ten posts, I might have opted to do one list of Bad Boy Book Boyfriends and another of Good Boy Book Boyfriends.

But as I have way too many posts to create and so little time to get them done, for today I’m sticking with just the one list. However, I can’t pass up the chance to list just a few other bookish boys I adore.

Will of Jessa Holbrook’s WHILE YOU’RE AWAY

    Colt of Karsten Knight’s AFTERGLOW

Ethan of Chloe Neill’s HOUSE RULES and BITING BAD

Warner of Tahereh Mafi’s DESTROY ME

    Logan of C.J. Redwine’s DECEPTION

    Fenn of Lesley Livingston’s DESCENDANT

Jules of Amy Plum’s UNTIL I DIE

Kai of Wendy Higgins’ SWEET PERIL

Dante of Victoria Scott’s THE COLLECTOR and THE LIBERATOR

Finn of Jessica Spotswood’s STAR CURSED

And, of course, there are so many more… but this is supposed to just be a Top Ten List and with these extra boys I’m now up to twenty.

    Best ____ of 2013

Last year I chose favorite quotes. But this year I’m going for CHARACTER COUPLES. Even though many of this year’s reads paired up characters I’d rather see paired with someone else, there were quite a few character couples I love, love, loved.

And instead of rambling about all of my reasons why I love these character couples I thought I’d let the characters speak for themselves. They do a much better job of it than I ever could. Though I’m so very tempted to chime in…

    line2

    Favorite Character Couples 2013

    1.

    Shadowfever

SHADOWFEVER (Fever #5) by Karen Marie Moning

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Mac and Barrons…

“I’m not the hero, Mac. Never have been. Never will be. Let us be perfectly clear: I’m not the antihero, either, so quit waiting to discover my hidden potential. There’s nothing to redeem me.”

    I want him anyway.

It’s what he wanted to know.

I exhale impatiently and shove hair from my face. “Are you going to talk me to death or fuck me, Jericho Barrons?”

    2.

    Endless Knight

ENDLESS KNIGHT (The Aracana Chronicles #2) by Kresley Cole

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Evie and Death…

“What are you thinking about, creature?” His words were husky.

Licking your runes? Thank God he couldn’t read my thoughts anymore. Face flushing, I grasped for something to say. “I bet you were expecting a taller Empress this time around.” Lame.

“I would change nothing about your appearance.”

When we locked eyes in the mirror, his burning gaze made even more heat cascade through my body.

Death rose with that lethal grace and strode toward me. I swallowed. Would he try to kiss me? And what would I do if he did?

    3.

    Through the Zombie Glass

THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS (White Rabbit Chronicles #2) by Gena Showalter

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Alice and Cole…

“I just… I can’t seem to stay away. You’re like a magnet, and I’m drawn. And what about you? You’re supposed to yell at me, scream profanities and tell me to go and never come back. Why aren’t you yelling?” he asked almost bitterly.

Because, despite everything, I liked that he was here.

    Foolish girl.

“You want me to yell?” I said, and drew in a deep breath, preparing. “I will.”

He shook his head, looked up at me through the thick shield of those dark, dark lashes. “It’s too late for that. I’m going to kiss you, Ali.”

Kiss… Yes… No! “You made your bed.”

“I know. But I still want you in it.”

    4.

    With All My Soul

WITH ALL MY SOUL (Soul Screamers #7) by Rachel Vincent

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Kaylee and Tod…

“This is the most frighteningly beautiful mouth I have ever seen. The most terrifyingly delicious lips I have ever tasted. These lips make me hungry for more every time I kiss them. This mouth, and the tongue inside it…they speak words I hang on to. Words that make me want to be a better man. Words I would gladly build my entire afterlife around. But they also say things that terrify me. Things that send chills all the way to my heart. They speak about dangers I can’t prevent. Threats I can’t always see. They threaten to do things that could get you hurt, when every single beat of my heart tells me that I need to protect you.”

I stared at him, stunned, and he leaned in to kiss me again, softly. Almost chastely.

    5.

    Crash Into You

CRASH INTO YOU (Pushing the Limits #3) by Katie McGarry

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Isaiah and Rachel…

Rachel tries to lower her head, but I reach up and touch her chin. “Don’t.”

I tilt her head up, engulfing her line of vision. She’s going to see me and me alone. No cars, no Zach, none of the other assholes trying to win her eye during the night. The sweet scent of jasmine entwining with the salty smell of the beach rushes into my lungs. I lick my lips, wanting to kiss her, but I’m too full of energy to dare let my lips brush hers.

Beneath my fingertips, her pulse beats wildly. “I don’t understand you, Isaiah.”

“Then we have something in common, because I don’t get you at all.”

    6.

    Sweet Peril Cover

SWEET PERIL (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Anna and Kaidan…

“For the record,” he ground out in a guttural whisper, “I was more myself with you during those three days than I’ve ever been with anyone in my life. It’d be easier if I could be fake with you, but you bring out everything in me, little Ann. All of it.”

His sudden fierceness frightened and excited me. He was not in his right mind. I blinked several times before taking a step back and running into the rail. I could do nothing but stare as he went on.

    7.

    Foreplay

FOREPLAY (The Ivy Chronicles #1) by Sophie Jordan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Pepper and Reece…

He gave my sweatshirt a small tug, inexorably pulling me toward him, bit by bit, and it was like the other night again. His presence was overwhelming, the heat that emanated from him. The blue of his eyes that seemed to turn to smoke when he looked at me. I was under his spell. Maybe I had never ceased to be. I’d been spellbound since our first kiss and especially since the night I spent in his loft. Maybe this was what had brought me back here in the middle of the night. Maybe I was hoping to repeat the experience.

“I’ll never lie to you, Pepper.” That soft utterance blew through me like a sonic blast. Crazy, but I heard more than his vow to be honest. The words were full of the expectation that there would be a him and me, an us. That we were really doing this. Whatever this was.

    8.

    While You're Away

WHILE YOU’RE AWAY by Jessa Holbrook

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Sarah and Will…

It was easy to kiss Will Spencer. We moved in tandem, both turning at the same time. It was like we were machined to fit together, the right key in the right lock. Rising on my toes to meet his mouth, I looped my arms around his neck. Stretched against him, I felt long and tall, and strangely lovely. I wasn’t transformed by his touch. I was revealed.

    9.

    The Beautiful and the Cursed

THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED (The Disposessed #1) by Page Morgan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Ingrid and Luc…

Ingrid froze as he grazed his fingers through her hair, scattering a few pins to the floor. Then he gripped the back of her head, his tangled fingers tugging at her hair, and Ingrid thought she could finally read something in the way he looked at her: a longing so tangible that it made her ache.

“I haven’t ended you because you’re my human.”

And then Luc did what he hadn’t done in the orangery. His lips found hers. It was a light sweep of a kiss, and Ingrid, who’d quit breathing, feared he was going to stop again. The idea of it knifed through her and her hands itched to reach up, latch on to him, and refuse the retreat.

    It didn’t come to that.

    10.

    The Collector

THE COLLECTOR (The Collector #1) by Victoria Scott

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Dante and Charlie…

“But you need to know the truth. I didn’t mean for this to happen.” I stop, considering what I just said. “Actually, I guess I did mean for this to happen. At first. But then I got to know you, Charlie. I got to see how you are, the things you do for other people. The way you smile when there’s nothing left to smile about, and the way you laugh…it hurts to even hear it. Because it reminds me what it’s like to live. To be happy.” I take a deep breath. “You are beautiful, Charlie. You’re so beautiful, and I can’t believe I let you think you weren’t.”

I turn around but focus on the ground. I can’t see her face. It’ll end me. But my eyes are deceitful, and before I can gouge them from my face, they slide up and land on her. On Charlie. And she’s crying. Tears rolling down her cheeks, sliding into a wide, happy smile.

    Wishful Thinking Character Couples

As I mentioned, there were a number of characters I’d have liked to see paired up with someone other than the character they ended up with… or the character they’re with at the moment.

So I decided to create a Top 10 Wishful Thinking Character Couples list. But instead of listing them here, since I have exactly ten, I thought I’d create a completely independent list over at The Annex.

Best Books I’ve Read in 2013

I read a ton of awesome books this year. Many from the same series by the same author. But as I was trying so very hard to keep my list to just ten, I decided to choose only one book from each series, even if I read multiple books in a particular series that I thought were amazing.

And I couldn’t list all my favorite reads this year since one or two of them were a secret. Nor could I list all the 2013 releases I love, love, loved since I read some of them in 2012. But I’m not too sad about that, because reading them last year made creating this list just a little bit easier.

There were also a few books I loved in 2013 that were not YA. But in keeping with my typical YA only “best” list, I didn’t include them in this post. Though I plan on posting my non-YA favorites on The Annex. Yes, I’m cheating just a little… as usual. But I just can’t seem to help myself.

    Anyway…

It took me ages to narrow my list down from my original picks and to keep my “honorable mentions” to only four titles, just like last year. But after much hair pulling and nail-biting I was able to get it done.

    line2

The Best I’ve Read in 2013

    1.

    With All My Soul

WITH ALL MY SOUL by Rachel Vincent

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

As sad as I was to see this series end, I still couldn’t help falling madly in love with this last installment. It was heartbreaking and nerve-wracking and exciting and heartwarming and I loved every single minute of the read.

I especially loved the fact that I was able to become intrigued by a brand new character, that the story wasn’t rushed and that the ending didn’t leave me feeling like something was missing. It was the perfect ending to an amazing series and I couldn’t have loved it any more than I did.

    2.

    Endless Knight

    ENDLESS KNIGHT by Kresley Cole

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Kresley Cole’s Arcana Chronicles are completely and totally amazing. They are so my kind of books. From beginning to end in both books in this series I was utterly riveted.

And while I didn’t think it was possible, this second book in the series was even more exciting than the first. It was darker, it was hotter, it was all sorts of sexy. The lore was fascinating. And it made me fall head-over-heels in love with Death just like I hoped it would.

To say that I am dying for the next installment in this series would be a major understatement.

    3.

    Through the Zombie Glass

THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS by Gena Showalter

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I read both books in this series in 2013 and absolutely loved both of them. They were unputdownable reads and I couldn’t have been more surprised by the fact that I fell so completely in love with zombie books that gave a nod to Alice in Wonderland.

Gena Showalter was incredibly creative with her stories. She did not skimp on the action. It was edge-of-your-seat exciting. And the love story was angst-filled and twisty-turny to the max.

And as I opted to choose just one of the two books in this series as a favorite, I had to select the one that absolutely killed me in the best possible way.

    4.

    The Eternity Cure

THE ETERNITY CURE by Julie Kagawa

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I did not expect to love the Blood of Eden series more than I loved the author’s faerie books. But oh my gosh I couldn’t help myself. Dystopia and vampires are an unexpected combination but one that the author made work so amazingly well.

The characters, the epic journey, the killer cliffhanger all worked together to make this one of my favorite books and not simply a 2013 favorite. I’m talking all-time favorite.

    5.

    Crash Into You

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I fell under Katie McGarry’s spell in 2013. She is a fan-freaking-tastic writer and her Pushing the Limits series is one of my very most favorite contemporary YA series.

I read all three books in this series, plus the novella, in 2013, which made it very hard to choose only one of the books for my top ten list. But I had to choose Isaiah and Rachel’s story, even though I adored Noah and Echo’s story so, so much.

Perhaps it was getting to know and love Isaiah before reading his story that made me love it that much more. Or perhaps it’s simply just that Isaiah is amazing. But whatever the reason, it is my favorite of the series and it’s definitely one of my favorite reads from 2013.

    6.

    Afterglow

    AFTERGLOW by Karsten Knight

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I was devastated to see this series end. The world that Karsten Knight created was so unique and fascinating and exciting. The characters were lovable and detestable and completely and totally kick-a**. And this final installment in the series was just as phenomenal as its predecessors.

And that ending. Oh. My. Gosh. That ending. While I can’t talk about that ending, I will just say that it gives me hope. For a certain character. Oh the possibilities.

    7.

    Star Cursed Cover

    STAR CURSED by Jessica Spotswood

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I was so glad that I got the chance to read both books in The Cahill Witch Chronicles this year. I was completely surprised by how much I loved each of the books. They are not stories in my typical go-to genre and yet both books are among my most favorites.

I couldn’t help but fall in love with the story, the setting, the characters. It’s a totally addictive read and one that’s definitely re-read worthy. Though even after a re-read, it’s no easier to have to wait for the next installment in the series. This I know all too well.

    8.

    The Beautiful and the Cursed

THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED by Page Morgan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Yet another unexpected favorite on my list is Page Morgan’s THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED. If someone told me that I could fall in love with a gargoyle I would have totally rolled my eyes at them. I might have even told them that they were crazy. I would have definitely thought it.

Well, this author made me not only fall in love with a gargoyle, but her story about them. The sequel is one of my most anticipated reads for 2014. And the wait is killing me.

    9.

    While You're Away

WHILE YOU’RE AWAY by Jessa Holbrook

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I read this book in its serialized format, with just a few chapters available to read in one sitting. It was exquisite torture. This story was tantalizing and nerve-wracking and beautiful and nerve-wracking – yes I said it twice, but it needed to be said two times… if not more.

I was made to root for a love story that I never would have thought I’d cheer for. I was made to wish and hope for a happily ever after for two characters who, at first, I didn’t think deserved one. I was anxious, I was fearful, I was tentatively hopeful and at times I was even sad. But I was keeping my fingers crossed the entire time for the slim chance that things would work out.

    10.

    A Touch Menacing

A TOUCH MENACING by Leah Clifford

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Leah Clifford’s Touch Trilogy is one of my favorite series of all time. It’s so very different from anything I’ve ever read. It’s very dark. It is full of surprises. Shocking surprises. Devastating surprises. But it is wicked, wicked awesome.

The end of this final installment in the series left me in tears. And, no, I won’t say whether they’re happy or sad tears. But if you have read this book or you’ve read any of the books in this series by this author I think you will know exactly what kind of tears there were.

This last book was non-stop action, with more than a few punches to the face. I couldn’t devour it fast enough. It was that epic. And if I didn’t think it could get any better, the unpublished epilogue made this book that much more off-the-charts amazing for me. Holy-freaking-wow.

    Review

THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS is packed full of zombie-killing action, romance that puts readers on one heck of a twist-turny rollercoaster ride of emotion, suspense of the nail-biting variety and a story that will keep them riveted through each and every one of its four hundred plus pages.

Not skipping a beat, readers will be returned to a world that is becoming ever more crowded with zombies, where slayers and hazmats pursue these once-human beings with very different goals, and where not all is quite right with Alice Bell.

She is still recovering from her injuries. She is still having nightmares. She hasn’t had any visions of her future with Cole. And ever since she was bitten she’s been feeling different. She’s been seeing things. She’s been hungry.

So when she finally has a vision, it seems as if things may be getting back to normal. Except that the vision is not with Cole, it’s with someone new. And if what it reveals comes true, it would mean that they have no future, no happy ending, and that she’s destined to be with someone else. So is he.

But if that future is going to play out, it’s going to have to happen soon. Before the darkness takes over. Before there is no more Ali Bell.

Right from the start, from Ali’s introductory note, author Gena Showalter sets the stage for a story that promises to be tension-filled, a story that let’s readers know loud and clear that things go very wrong for Ali, that costly mistakes will be made and that losses will result, but that her heroine is not giving up, that she’s ready for a fight and that she has no plans to lose.

With a new breed of stronger, more intelligent zombie to contend with, a number of fierce, kick-ass battles that not everyone will survive, a heroine who is fighting her own battle with darkness, an even more determined ex-girlfriend in the picture trying to tear apart a relationship that is already in turmoil, and someone ready to betray them all, this second installment in the author’s White Rabbit Chronicles delivers an electrifying and unputdownable read. One that is intense and exciting, suspenseful and nerve-wracking, at times sizzling with heat and at others devastatingly heartbreaking, and is a sequel that is absolutely not to be missed.

Fans of the first book will be able to pick up THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS and immediately reconnect with the story and its characters. And once they do they will be taken on a wild ride that won’t let them loose until after they’ve had a chance to peek through the zombie glass, follow Alice along on her descent into darkness and learn whether Ali’s adventures in zombieland end happily or simply just come to an end.

    Reviewer gives this book…

    6

Like In-N-Out Burger‘s infamous secret menu this one deserves my off-the-menu 6 star rating.

    On a personal note…

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Awesome. Holy wow. Awesome.

I would never have imagined that a book of this length could keep me glued to every single page. But it did. I loved the first book in this series, ALICE IN ZOMBIELAND, but this sequel jacked up the intensity and gave me all the feels.

Of course most of them were of the heart-wrenching variety.

From the moment the vision was revealed my heart plummeted. And then when every single thing after that happened, I felt myself die a little on the inside. My notes consisted mostly of “Cole!!!!!” and expletives that I choose not to put in print here involving Veronica.

Though it wasn’t just the torn and tattered love story that made me love this book. I loved the fact that I could just pick it right up and immediately get up to speed. The author did not data dump but she was able to remind me exactly what had happened and did so in a way that was totally entertaining and felt very much a part of the story. It’s not like I’d read the first book that long before I picked up THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS. But with my memory I always need a refresher and Gena Showalter made it so easy to fall back into – and in love with – this story.

And once I did there were the kick-ass battles to love. And there were many, many battles. I loved each and every one. They were exciting and disgusting and with the possibility that at any moment any one of my favorite characters could meet their end made them incredibly nerve-wracking.

Oh and then there was Gavin. I absolutely loved Gavin. I wanted not to love Gavin, but I couldn’t help myself. He was charming, a total mimbo, and I wasn’t entirely sure he was trustworthy. But he always made me smile. Always.

Aside from the wicked awesome battles and the delectable, angst-filled love story, there was the growing dread about what was going on with Ali, a mystery that kept me guessing, though I was pretty certain I knew what was what, heartbreak of a completely different variety, and a whole bunch of evil dudes that made this story even more insanely awesome.

And I even liked the fact that this didn’t end on a cliffhanger. While there is plenty of room for speculation as to where things are headed, much like the ending for the first book, I was not left dangling over a precipice.

Things were resolved and answers were given. Of course I don’t plan on revealing what those were. And I won’t say whether this story ends happily. I won’t hint at who makes it into the next book in the series. And I certainly won’t talk about what happened between Cole and Ali. Or Ali and….

    Nope, not going to happen.

The White Rabbit Chronicles were not at all what I expected when I first picked them up. Zombieland didn’t quite resemble the Wonderland I imagined it would. It was more of an homage than a recreation. It was different, but no less fantastical, no less amazing. And I couldn’t help falling immediately and madly in love with the first book in this series. And that was nothing compared to how hard I fell for THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS.

    Favorite passage…

I could have opened this book to any page and found a passage that I could call a favorite. I could have chosen a passage that featured the oh-so-amazing Cole Holland, but I thought all of those would be so much more fun to discover during the read.

And so I chose this one which caused my jaw to drop and made me all sorts of nervous about just what was going to happen in this book.

The new guy whistled under his breath, and my attention shifted to him. Our gazes collided. A second later, the world washed out of my view, just as I’d wanted it to do with Cole–

–we were in my bedroom, standing beside my bed. No, we were lying on my bed. I’d just pushed him down. I tilted his head with one hand and pulled at his clothes with the other. Then, I licked my way down his throat. I was making strange little growling noises, as if I’d never enjoyed a taste so much and had to have more–

    “–Ali!” Cole shouted.

I blinked, and the vision evaporated.

I am totally stoked that THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS is releasing this week. I read it early thanks to a trade for an ARC and it was so unbe-freaking-lievably awesome. Cole!!!!

But even though I already read it, I can’t wait until my print copy arrives this week and it downloads to my Kindle next week so that I can read it again and again, highlight my favorite passages – there were a ton – and fall in love with this sequel for a second time.

As I have already read this amazing book and this post is so very long, I will just say this is a total must read sequel, it’s angst-filled, nerve-wracking, maddening – in a really good way – action-packed and awesome. Okay, so I’ve said awesome already. But it’s awesome times two, times ten, times a million.

    Untold

    addtogoodreads

UNTOLD by Sarah Rees Brennan will be released in the U.S. on September 24, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Random House Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 384 pages.

UNTOLD is the second book in author Sarah Rees Brennan’s The Lyburn Legacy. The third book, UNBROKEN, is slated for release in 2014.

    Dots_Divider

I haven’t yet read the first book in The Lyburn Legacy but I’m such a huge fan of author Sarah Rees Brennan that I just had to pre-order UNTOLD and hope to read both books in the series some time this fall.

Even though I haven’t yet met Kami Glass and found out why – and how – she can love a boy she never met, found out how come her imaginary friend isn’t so imaginary and found out why either Jared or Ash is so familiar to her, I can’t wait to read this sequel. Both books sound awesome – yes I took a peek at this books’ descriptions and may have spoiled just one teensy piece of the story. Oh well. Totally worth it.

I want to know what exactly were those “bloody deeds” that happened in the woods. I want to know what Kami’s mother is hiding. I want to know whether she still loves her not-so-imaginary friend or if she’ll choose to love someone else and most of all I want to know which side she chooses in Sorry-in-the-Vale – good or evil.

    Description…

Free from bonds, but not each other

It’s time to choose sides… On the surface, Sorry-in-the-Vale is a sleepy English town. But Kami Glass knows the truth. Sorry-in-the-Vale is full of magic. In the old days, the Lynburn family ruled with fear, terrifying the people into submission in order to kill for blood and power. Now the Lynburns are back, and Rob Lynburn is gathering sorcerers so that the town can return to the old ways.

But Rob and his followers aren’t the only sorcerers in town. A decision must be made: pay the blood sacrifice, or fight. For Kami, this means more than just choosing between good and evil. With her link to Jared Lynburn severed, she’s now free to love anyone she chooses. But who should that be?

Published by POINT, the print edition is 304 pages.

    Dots_Divider

I am so excited that my copy of MARIE ANTOINETTE, SERIAL KILLER will be downloading to my Kindle this week. I absolutely loved this book and I think Katie Alender is an awesome writer and I cannot wait to have it as part of my permanent collection.

It was such a super quick read, and the description did not lie, it was totally suspenseful. I was riveted. Now I just need to figure out how to write my review.

But so as not to spoil anything, I will not reveal just what secret is uncovered, just what realization Colette comes to, or just why she’s in danger. It’s so much better to uncover all of that in the course of the read.

    Description…

Colette Iselin is excited to go to Paris on a class trip. She’ll get to soak up the beauty and culture, and maybe even learn something about her family’s French roots.

But a series of gruesome murders are taking place across the city, putting everyone on edge. And as she tours museums and palaces, Colette keeps seeing a strange vision: a pale woman in a ball gown and powdered wig, who looks suspiciously like Marie Antoinette.

Colette knows her popular, status-obsessed friends won’t believe her, so she seeks out the help of a charming French boy. Together, they uncover a shocking secret involving a dark, hidden history. When Colette realizes she herself may hold the key to the mystery, her own life is suddenly in danger . . .

Acclaimed author Katie Alender brings heart-stopping suspense to this story of revenge, betrayal, intrigue — and one killer queen.

    Find Me

    addtogoodreads

FIND ME by Romily Bernard will be released in the U.S. on September 24, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 320 pages.

    Dots_Divider

I cannot believe release date is finally just about here for FIND ME. I received an eARC for review, am three-fourths of the way finished and I wish I were reading it right now instead of writing this post. I absolutely love this book. I just knew I would. And it did not disappoint.

As FIND ME was the book I spotlighted for my Book Watch post and it’s a book I hope to review, as always, I’m going to try to keep things brief here. But… yes there is always a but… I loved getting to know Wick, a.k.a. Wicket, a.k.a. Wicked. And I love the suspense involved in trying to figure out who the mystery man in Tessa Waye’s diary is and whether he’s the same person responsible for her death.

There is one suspect at the tip top of my list but as the killer hasn’t yet been revealed I don’t know if I’m right. And I do keep second guessing myself. Which makes for the perfect mystery read for me. As I usually guess whodunit right at the start I’m usually quite bored during the read and the ending is often anticlimactic. I’m almost never wrong.

But even if I am right, this story has kept me guessing, kept me engaged, and I am anything but bored. So I’m totally glad that I have this pre-ordered and that the final version will be downloading to my Kindle on Monday Midnight. Even though it won’t go on the TBR Pile I can’t wait for it to be a part of my collection.

    Description…

    “Find Me.”

These are the words written on Tessa Waye’s diary. The diary that ends up with Wick Tate. But Tessa’s just been found . . . dead.

Wick has the right computer-hacking skills for the job, but little interest in this perverse game of hide-and-seek. Until her sister Lily is the next target.

Then Griff, trailer-park boy next door and fellow hacker, shows up, intent on helping Wick. Is a happy ending possible with the threat of Wick’s deadbeat dad returning, the detective hunting him sniffing around Wick instead, and a killer taunting her at every step?

Foster child. Daughter of a felon. Loner hacker girl. Wick has a bad attitude and sarcasm to spare.

But she’s going to find this killer no matter what.

    Because it just got personal.

WITCHSTRUCK by Victoria Lamb will be released in the U.S. on September 24, 2013 in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin Teen, the print edition is 320 pages.

WITCHSTRUCK is the first book in author Victoria Lamb’s The Tudor Witch Trilogy. The second book in the series, WITCHFALL, will likely be available in 2014 in the U.S. The third book in the trilogy is currently untitled.

    Dots_Divider

I discovered this book thanks to a tour email from Kismet Book Touring and while I completely missed the sign-ups for the tour, WITCHSTRUCK looked so intriguing that I had to pre-order it for my Kindle. While I could have grabbed an early read from NetGalley, I knew my reading schedule was tight so I figured I could wait until its release and read my purchased copy.

Though I wish I read it already. It sounds amazing.

I can’t wait to go back in time to England in 1554 and meet Meg Lytton and learn more about her “dark and powerful gift.” A story of witchcraft and conspiracies against the crown sounds like just the sort of book I’d love to read right about now, especially after having watched a few episodes of “The White Queen.”

But I am just so curious what will happen with the witchfinder Marcus wanting to wed Meg. I’m more curious about what will happen between Meg and the Spanish priest Alejandro. And I really want to find out just what “dangerous choice” she must open her heart to.

And I really, really, hope to be able to sneak this onto the pile next week.

    Description…

If she sink, she be no witch and shall be drowned. If she float, she be a witch and must be hanged.

Meg Lytton has always known she is different;that she bears a dark and powerful gift. But in 1554 England, in service at Woodstock Palace to the banished Tudor princess Elizabeth, it has never been more dangerous to practice witchcraft. Meg knows she must guard her secret carefully from the many suspicious eyes watching over the princess and her companions. One wrong move could mean her life, and the life of Elizabeth, rightful heir to the English throne. With witchfinder Marcus Dent determined to have Meg’s hand in marriage, and Meg’s own family conspiring against the English queen, there isn’t a single person Meg can trust. Certainly not the enigmatic young Spanish priest Alejandro de Castillo, despite her undeniable feelings. But when all the world turns against her, Meg must open her heart to a dangerous choice. The Secret Circle meets The Other Boleyn Girl in Witchstruck ,the first book of the magical Tudor Witch trilogy.

    A Radiant Sky

A RADIANT SKY by Jocelyn Davies will be released in the U.S. on September 24, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 368 pages.

A RADIANT SKY is the third, and final, full-length book in author Jocelyn Davies’ A Beautiful Dark series.

    Dots_Divider

I can’t believe this series is ending with A RADIANT SKY’s release this week. I own both of the previous books and have this last book pre-ordered, even though I have yet to discover this series. But I really want to.

Because, as I’ve thought since prior to the first book in the series’ release, it sounds amazing.

I want to meet Skye and the “dark and wild” Asher and  “fair and aloof” Devin. I want to find out more about Skye’s past and the secret that “threatens to shatter her world.” I love stories with a love triangle and the first book in the series holds the promise of one that sounds like it will have major repercussions. And I can’t wait to find out what those are.

But I refuse to read the description for this final book in the series as it will potentially spoil the entire series for me. Including it in this post is proving to be quite the temptation, but one I’m desperate not to give in to as I hope to be able to read this entire series some time next month.

And I am just so totally stoked that I’ll be able to devour an entire series from beginning to end, especially one that sounds as amazing as this one does.

    Description…

Since the night of her seventeenth birthday, Skye has been torn between two opposites: Light and Dark, the Order and the Rebellion, Devin and Asher.

But her decision shocked both sides—because she chose neither.

With the help of her friends, Skye forges her own path, setting out to gather an uprising of Rogues. The treacherous and elusive half-angels may be the key to maintaining the balance of fate and free will. But completing the mission her parents left unfinished is more difficult—and dangerous—than she could have imagined. And doing so comes at a cost: Her greatest love may now be a lethal enemy. Because it’s not just the Order that sees her as a threat who must be eliminated. The Rebellion does, too.

And both sides will do whatever it takes to win.

Dark days lie ahead, and if Skye is to survive, she’ll need to rely on her extraordinary powers and the strength of her will. Because she has a future—and a love—that’s worth fighting for.

The sweeping, darkly romantic story that began with A Beautiful Dark and gathered intensity in A Fractured Light comes to a thrilling conclusion in A Radiant Sky.

    Where the Stars Still Shine

WHERE THE STARS STILL SHINE by Trish Doller will be released in the U.S. on September 24, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Bloomsbury USA Childrens, the print edition is 352 pages.

    Dots_Divider

Ever since I first saw WHERE THE STARS STILL SHINE on NetGalley I’ve wanted to read it. While I didn’t request it for review, I immediately added it to my list of pre-orders and I’m so excited that it will be downloading this week.

There was something about this book’s title that just kept calling to me. Even before I read the description I knew that it had to be a part of my book collection. But after having read the description I definitely knew I’d want to read this book. It sounds utterly heartbreaking and haunting with the potential for a happy-ish ending.

The description promises “love” and “betrayal” and a story that is “gritty” and “true.” And I cannot wait to read it, make a connection with Callie and root for her to find the normal she never had.

    Description…

Stolen as a child from her large and loving family, and on the run with her mom for more than ten years, Callie has only the barest idea of what normal life might be like. She’s never had a home, never gone to school, and has gotten most of her meals from laundromat vending machines. Her dreams are haunted by memories she’d like to forget completely. But when Callie’s mom is finally arrested for kidnapping her, and Callie’s real dad whisks her back to what would have been her life, in a small town in Florida, Callie must find a way to leave the past behind. She must learn to be part of a family. And she must believe that love–even with someone who seems an improbable choice–is more than just a possibility.

Trish Doller writes incredibly real teens, and this searing story of love, betrayal, and how not to lose your mind will resonate with readers who want their stories gritty and utterly true.

    Not a Drop to Drink

    addtogoodreads

NOT A DROP TO DRINK by Mindy McGinnis will be released in the U.S. on September 24, 2013 in hardcover, audio and ebook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Katherine Tegen books, the print edition is 320 pages.

    Dots_Divider

I have heard so many great things about NOT A DROP TO DRINK that when searching for details for this post and seeing its discounted price at Amazon I decided to pre-order it for my Kindle.

I can’t quite get a feel for the story based upon its description so I’m not entirely sure if it’s the type of story I would normally read. It sounds more similar to the types of movies I enjoy – a family fighting to defend their land in a post-apocalyptic type of setting that’s part post-apocalyptic, part horror.

But it does make me curious. Especially as regards the writing, which the description says uses “evocative, spare language.” And with its beautiful cover and high words of praise from trusted blogger friends I definitely plan on reading this book some time in early November.

    Description…

Regret was for people with nothing to defend, people who had no water.

Lynn knows every threat to her pond: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and, most importantly, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn’t leave at all.

Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. Having a life means dedicating it to survival, and the constant work of gathering wood and water. Having a pond requires the fortitude to protect it, something Mother taught her well during their quiet hours on the rooftop, rifles in hand.

But wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it….

With evocative, spare language and incredible drama, danger, and romance, debut author Mindy McGinnis depicts one girl’s journey in a barren world not so different than our own.

In a world ravaged by mutation, a teenage girl must travel into the forbidden Savage Zone to recover lost artifacts or her father’s life is forfeit.

America has been ravaged by a war that has left the eastern half of the country riddled with mutation. Many of the people there exhibit varying degrees of animal traits. Even the plantlife has gone feral.

Crossing from west to east is supposed to be forbidden, but sometimes it’s necessary. Some enter the Savage Zone to provide humanitarian relief. Sixteen-year-old Lane’s father goes there to retrieve lost artifacts—he is a Fetch. It’s a dangerous life, but rewarding—until he’s caught.

Desperate to save her father, Lane agrees to complete his latest job. That means leaving behind her life of comfort and risking life and limb—and her very DNA—in the Savage Zone. But she’s not alone. In order to complete her objective, Lane strikes a deal with handsome, roguish Rafe. In exchange for his help as a guide, Lane is supposed to sneak him back west. But though Rafe doesn’t exhibit any signs of “manimal” mutation, he’s hardly civilized . . . and he may not be trustworthy.

Maggie knows something’s off about Val, her mom’s new husband. Val is from Oldworld, where they still use magic, and he won’t have any tech in his office-shed behind the house. But—more importantly—what are the huge, horrible, jagged, jumpy shadows following him around? Magic is illegal in Newworld, which is all about science. The magic-carrying gene was disabled two generations ago, back when Maggie’s great-grandmother was a notable magician. But that was a long time ago.

Then Maggie meets Casimir, the most beautiful boy she has ever seen. He’s from Oldworld too—and he’s heard of Maggie’s stepfather, and has a guess about Val’s shadows. Maggie doesn’t want to know . . . until earth-shattering events force her to depend on Val and his shadows. And perhaps on her own heritage.

In this dangerously unstable world, neither science nor magic has the necessary answers, but a truce between them is impossible. And although the two are supposed to be incompatible, Maggie’s discovering the world will need both to survive.

    Pub. Date: September 24, 2013

Publisher: Little Brown Books for Young Readers

Find It: AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE

    Description:

The triangular spaceship hovered motionless in the sky above Reese Holloway’s house, as inscrutable as a black hole. It had seemed like a good idea when they were inside: to tell the truth about what happened to them at Area 51. It didn’t seem like such a good idea now.

Reese and David are not normal teens—not since they were adapted with alien DNA by the Imria, an extraterrestrial race that has been secretly visiting Earth for decades. Now everyone is trying to get to them: the government, the Imria, and a mysterious corporation that would do anything for the upper hand against the aliens.

Beyond the web of conspiracies, Reese can’t reconcile her love for David with her feelings for her ex-girlfriend Amber, an Imrian. But her choice between two worlds will play a critical role in determining the future of humanity, the Imria’s place in it, and the inheritance she and David will bring to the universe.

In this gripping sequel to Adaptation, Malinda Lo brings a thoughtful exploration of adolescence, sexuality, and “the other” to a science fiction thriller that is impossible to put down.

As they head to Grandma’s house (eluding the police at every turn), Jack tells baby Socrates about Homer, Troy, Aristotle, the real Socrates, and the Greek myths—because all stories spring from those stories, really. It has been ten years. We live our lives as best we can. Nobody fights back . . . nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans who spend their lives studying powerful Epics, finding their weaknesses, then assassinating them.

My name is David Charleston. I’m not one of the Reckoners, but I intend to join them. I have something they need. Something precious, something incredible. Not an object, but an experience. I know his secret.

    I’ve seen Steelheart bleed.

Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics.

But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his wills.

    Publisher: Scribner

    Description:

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the “steam” that children with the “shining” produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

While I was totally relieved at only having eight books pre-ordered last week, that number seems to be stressing me out this week. Even though I have – or will have – read three of the books I have ordered prior to their release date.

I’ve gotten to the point where my Kindle is telling me it has no more space to add new books. Which makes me a very unhappy camper. Especially since that Kindle doesn’t even have the eARCs on it. Just finished copies. So much for having all my books on one device.

But I’m pretty sure I’m stressed because I also plan on buying ALL THE TRUTH THAT’S IN ME and COUNTDOWN and INHUMAN and SHADOWS. And I’ll probably purchase Malinda Lo’s sequel INHERITANCE since I own the first book.

And as I have Stephen King’s DOCTOR SLEEP on order, which I’m kind of freaking out about, it’s really more like 13 new books for the collection versus five.

So I’m feeling kind of buried.

And while I decided to change up this post a little and add in the descriptions for both the books on order and the books of note, I will still be writing down my thoughts about each of the books I’ve pre-ordered. Though it makes this post hugely long. So maybe not one of my better ideas….

Anyway… I hope that a long awaited book is releasing this week that you’ll finally get to enjoy. I hope that if you read THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS you’ll tell me how much what happened there with Cole absolutely killed you. And I hope that it won’t be too difficult to say goodbye to a series you’ve loved.

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

Through the Zombie Glass Blog Tour: Cole Holland Character Interview + Giveaway

    Through The Zombieglass Button_1

Getting to be a part of the THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS Blog Tour and getting to interview Cole Holland is a dream come true. No, really. It is. I feel a little like I might have fallen down a rabbit hole and ended up in some crazy mixed up world where nothing makes any sense.

But I am not going to complain. Because being a part of this tour is awesome.

I only somewhat recently had the pleasure of meeting Ali Bell and Cole Holland. And it’s been only a few weeks since I was able to continue their adventures in THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS. Though I am still trying to recover from everything that happened in that sequel. It has not been at all easy.

I love, love, love the White Rabbit Chronicles. This series is not at all what I imagined it to be. It’s so much better. And this sequel? It shredded me and left me in pieces. Over and over and over again. I was heartbroken, I was devastated, I was anxious, I was angry. This book put my emotions on one heck of a roller coaster.

I have not yet written my review but this book has more than earned my off-the-menu six-star rating. It gave me everything I want in a read and so much more. Kick-a** fight scenes a plenty. Nerve-wracking suspense. Surprises. Heartbreak. Frustration. Angst. And, yes, there were tears. Especially when….

Well, maybe I shouldn’t say exactly when that was.

And I should probably get back on track. Because my stop on the tour today is not for a review but an interview. I had the pleasure – and oh yes it was a pleasure… mine anyway – of interviewing Cole Holland, a bad boy who is all sorts of awesome. If you haven’t met him yet, you are seriously missing out.

I knew from the moment I met Cole that he would make it onto my top five favorite YA bad boys list. And even with everything that happened since I first met him, he is still a top fiver. And I am so totally stoked to have been able to ask him quite a few questions for my stop on the blog tour today.

As this interview is one of my favorite character interviews I just had to include it before all the bookish details. But if you want to learn a little bit about this story and about Ali and Cole first, just scroll past the interview for the descriptions for both books in this series.

Or you can head over to the White Rabbit Chronicles WEBSITE for a whole bunch of information about Alice Bell, Cole Holland, Kat Parker, Frosty, Reeve, Bronx and some of the other Slayers and characters or to learn more about Anima Industries and Asher High School.

This tour also comes with a ton of amazing giveaways. Details and a chance to enter the Daily Giveaway are just a bit further below, along with information about the awesome Grand Prize Giveaway.

But if you just can’t wait to see what Cole has to say about himself, Ali, the Hazmats, his hopes for our survival, and his ink….

    Meet_Cole

First let me say thank you so much for taking the time to visit my blog, Cole. I know that your job as a Slayer leaves very little time for you to do much else. Especially take part in an interview. So I will try to keep this as brief – and painless – as possible… though I might not succeed at either. You are way too intriguing.

    ***

Cole-Holland-copyQ. As a new visitor to my site, could you tell me and my blog’s readers a little bit about yourself in fifteen words or less?

Cole: I’d rather go down fighting than stand back and stay safe.

Fiktshun: I wouldn’t doubt that for a second.

    ***

    Q. I’m not sure if you knew this, but Ali’s sister hinted that things were going to get difficult for you and Ali. If you had known, would you have believed her? And is Ali someone worth fighting for? Or is she someone you’d walk away from just as easily as you had your previous girlfriends?

Cole: Ali is worth…anything.  Everything.  And past girlfriends are not up for discussion.  Sorry.

Fiktshun: Awww. I’m so glad to hear that… well, what you said about Ali. But as far as your exes? If you ever feel like talking about them I have a lot of questions.

    ***

    Q. What of Ali’s many endearing qualities are your favorites? Is it the fact that she can make you smile? Is it her unending questions? Is it because she’s hot? Is it because she stands up to you?

Cole:  When Ali loves, she loves with her whole heart.  There’s nothing held back.  You never have to wonder how she feels.  She’s open, honest.  Oh, is she honest.  She will give you the brutal truth every time.  And you can trust her with your life—I can trust her.  Do you know how rare that is?  How precious?

Fiktshun: I do know how rare trust is. And honesty. I just wondered, given what happened….

    ***

    Q. You and your group of Slayers have a deep hatred for the Hazmats. What is it about what they’re doing that you despise the most?

Cole: They endanger innocent people.  They hurt innocent people.  And they do it all in the name of science.  But the truth?  They do it because of greed.

Fiktshun: What they’re doing is despicable. And what they did with… well, you know. I can’t imagine you were happy about that. At all.

    ***

    Q. Do you still have hope for our survival? What motivates you to keep on fighting?

Cole:  Hope for our survival?  Sweetheart, I fight from a place of victory.  The zombies are the ones fighting from a place of defeat.  They’re already dead.  So, yeah, I have hope.

Fiktshun: I am so relieved to hear you say that. What with the increase in their numbers and all… I’ve been more than a little bit worried. But if you have hope, that’s good enough for me.

    ***

    Q. You’ve lost a lot of friends along the way. What made you choose to memorialize them in ink on your body? And does it help you to get over their deaths?

Cole: What we carry in our hearts is always manifest in our bodies.  If you love, it shines on your face.  If you hate, it etches itself into every line of your skin.  Tattooing is my way of bringing what’s inside to the outside.

Fiktshun: Well that totally answers the one question I had but didn’t ask. *Grins.*

    ***

    Q. If Ali was one of those who didn’t survive, what would you do to honor her memory?

Cole: I can’t think like that.  There’s being smart and planning ahead, but there’s also planning ahead and worrying.  Worry eats you alive and does no good, so I refuse to do it.

Fiktshun: You say you refuse to worry, but weren’t you just the teensiest bit worried when that thing happened? I think you know which thing I’m talking about. I know I was worried.

    ***

    Q. You treat Ali as if she’s fragile and breakable. But she’s proved to you time and again that while breakable, she is anything but fragile. Do you not trust her abilities? What is it you fear most happening that hasn’t already happened?

Cole: I trust Ali’s abilities more than I trust my own.  But I also value her life more than my own.  I protect what I value.  That’s all there is to it.

    Fiktshun: *Swoon.*

    ***

    Q. You keep pushing Ali away or keep her at a distance. Is it because your feelings for her are conflicted? Or is there some other reason?

Cole: When it comes to Ali, I am not conflicted about my feelings.  I know exactly how I feel.  But I know how mercurial feelings can be, and just how untrustworthy, so I also know to proceed with caution.  But Ali is throwing me for a loop.  With her, I’m on new ground, trekking through uncharted territory.  I hate it as much as I love it.

Fiktshun: Would you say Ali scares you just a little then? Or is it just your feelings that scare you?

    ***

    Q. How would you describe Ali in fifteen words or less?

Cole: I can describe her in one.  Mine.

    Fiktshun: *Swoon* x10.

    ***

    Q. If you had any advice you could give to those of us who don’t have the ability to see zombies, what would it be?

    Cole: Start praying.

    Fiktshun: *Gulp.*

    Quickie_Qs

    Q. Favorite weapon?

    Cole: Crossbow.

    Q. Favorite fighting maneuver?

    Cole: Delivering the deathblow.

    Q. Favorite Ali moment?

    Cole: Every kiss.  Every touch.

Fiktshun: *Sigh* … *swoon* … *sigh.*

    Q. Favorite tattoo?

    Cole: My newest one.

    Fiktshun: *Grin.*

    Q. Biggest regret?

Cole: If you’ve read the book, you can guess.

Fiktshun: I have read the book and I am pretty sure I know the answer to this question. But I am glad to know that it is a regret and a big one at that.

About ALICE IN ZOMBIELAND (White Rabbit Chronicles #1)

    Release date: September 25, 2012
    Pages: 416
    Formats: Hardcover, paperback, audio, eBook

    Description:

She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
    I’d tell my sister no.
I’d never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I’d zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I’d hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I’d tell them I love them.
    I wish… Yeah, I wish.
