I have a plan.
We’ll either destroy them for good, or they’ll destroy us.
Either way, only one of us is walking away.
Alice ‘Ali’ Bell thinks the worst is behind her. She’s ready to take the next step with boyfriend Cole Holland, the leader of the zombie slayers; until Anima Industries, the agency controlling the zombies, launches a sneak attack, killing four of her friends. It’s then she realizes that humans can be more dangerous than monsters; and the worst has only begun.
As the surviving slayers prepare for war, Ali discovers she, too, can control the zombies and she isn’t the girl she thought she was. She’s connected to the woman responsible for killing and turning Cole’s mother. How can their relationship endure? As secrets come to light, and more slayers are taken or killed, Ali will fight harder than ever to bring down Anima even sacrificing her own life for those she loves.
Note: This review is based on an eARC borrowed from another blogger.
THE QUEEN OF ZOMBIE HEARTS is an epic finish to an absolutely phenomenal series. There is not a page, not a moment, that isn’t riveting. The action is intense, the story is suspenseful and exciting and heartbreaking, the romance sizzles, the characters are interesting and engaging, lovable and detestable. It’s an all-consuming read that is utterly unputdownable.
Everything has been leading up to the explosive finish pitting the slayers against Anima Industries. But it’s not a battle that will easily be won. There will be casualties along the way. There will be heartbreaking loss.
Even with new allies, their victory isn’t certain. And even with Ali’s new ability she will not be able to save everyone she loves or keep herself safe from the danger that their enemy poses. But she will not go down without a fight, even if the price she has to pay is her own life.
This final installment in the series is filled with even more heart-stopping action, even steamier romance, and even more devastating, heartwrenching loss. THE QUEEN OF ZOMBIE HEARTS introduces new characters as it says goodbye to characters readers have known and loved, it introduces each chapter with a title that will make readers grin, and ratchets up the tension as it builds to its incredibly climactic conclusion.
There will be shocks and surprises accompanied by tears and heartache along the way. But there will be moments that will make readers cheer and others that will make them swoon. Lingering questions will be answered and by the story’s end everything will be wrapped up with a final note from one of the remaining characters.
Gena Showalter pulled out all the stops when writing THE QUEEN OF ZOMBIE HEARTS. She did not hold anything back and in turn delivered an amazing series-ending story that is unequivocally a must, must, must read.
Like In-N-Out Burger‘s infamous secret menu this one deserves my off-the-menu 6 star rating.
On a Personal Note…
Best book in the series. That is all.
Oh… I have to say something else? Like why it was the best. Or why when I finished reading it I was a complete wreck. Or why that last little bit at the end made me smile even though I was totally destroyed.
Well, I can’t reveal any of that or it would be super spoiler-y.
So maybe I have to talk about how many times my jaw dropped because of what just happened. Or perhaps I should share just how often I said, “Wait…what? Did that just…? Are you kidding? No way… No way! Noooooooooooo!” Let’s just say it was often enough that by the end of the read my jaw was killing me and the looks I was getting for shouting at an inanimate object weren’t friendly. But I wasn’t embarrassed… not really.
Because THE QUEEN OF ZOMBIE HEARTS tore my heart out. It left me in tatters. It made me scream and sob. But it also made me cheer and smile and I never lost hope for a happy ending for Ali.
There were quite a few twists and turns in this last book. I guessed a few of them correctly, a couple others I did not see coming until I was completely steamrolled by them. As hoped for there was plenty of action. There was a ton of nail-biting, nerve-wracking tension and suspense. I was angst-ridden from page one until the very end.
Of course I would have loved this to be a longer series. I would have loved this series to go on for at least a couple more books. I would still love it if there were spinoff novels planned for certain characters – who I won’t name as I don’t want to reveal what happens to any of the characters in this series.
But it was an amazing ending to an absolutely phenomenal book and series. And even though there were all sorts of tears throughout the read, with moments that left me feeling completely gutted, I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
So, yes it was an emotional roller coaster, that often felt more like I was being shoved off a tall building. And yes, it was definitely a bittersweet addition to this series. And, yes, I am devastated about the fact that this has ended. But I couldn’t have loved it more.
As I don’t want to risk spoiling anything about this book, I am not going to reveal my most favorite passage from the story. But this one, from very early in the story, is all sorts of yummy.
“You can look at me now,” he said. “I won’t bite. Very hard.”
Our gazes locked, and I was inexorably trapped by a yearning that had plagued me since moment one. For him…this…more.
A slow grin lifted the corners of his wicked mouth.
Dude. He should totally come with a warning. Possible Panty Melting. Moonlight spilled over him, illuminating him, and for a moment, I thought I heard angels singing. His black hair stood out in adorable spikes, as if he’d plowed his hands through it one too many times. Eager to see me, perhaps? His gorgeous violet eyes were framed by lashes so thick and black he always looked like he was wearing eyeliner. (He wasn’t.)
And his body…
Good glory! I knew what waited under his clothing. Skin bronzed to perfection. Muscles honed to perfection. A perfect chest covered by the most perfect tattoos. One of his nipples was pierced—meow!—and it was, you guessed it, perfect.
He feathered his knuckles over my cheek, the slight touch electrifying me. “I missed you.”
