THE PERILOUS SEA Blog Tour: ‘A Day in the Life of Archer Fairfax’ Guest Post + Giveaway

I am so unbelievably excited to be today’s stop on THE PERILOUS SEA Blog tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. I am seriously in love with this series and its characters and I can’t wait until this next book in the series releases next week so that everyone will get the chance to find out what happens with Titus and Iolanthe.

For those who have read it early, then you know how amazing and epic it is. And I bet you are already dying for book three. I know I am.

But whether you have read it, THE BURNING SKY, or you’re a newcomer to the series, the post I have to share for my stop today is the perfect way to get to know a little bit more about Iolanthe by revealing just what a typical day is like for her, or rather, Archer Fairfax.

In addition to the very awesome post, which teases about things to come, and shares a swoon-worthy quote, there is a fab giveaway you’ll definitely want to enter.

And if you’d like to check out what a few bloggers are saying about THE PERILOUS SEA, or read a few posts by and interviews with the author, be sure to check out the other stops on tour. I’ll be updating the schedule with direct links to all the stops.

Anyway… before I decide to reveal what I know about what takes place in this book, I’m going to step away from the blog post. And here, just in case you don’t already know, is some information about THE PERILOUS SEA….

After spending the summer away from each other, Titus and Iolanthe (still disguised as Archer Fairfax) are eager to return to Eton College to resume their training to fight the Bane. Although no longer bound to Titus by a blood oath, Iolanthe is more committed than ever to fulfilling her destiny—especially with the agents of Atlantis quickly closing in.
Soon after arriving at school, though, Titus makes a shocking discovery, one that makes him question everything he previously believed about their mission. Faced with this devastating realization, Iolanthe is forced to come to terms with her new role, while Titus must choose between following his mother’s prophecies—and forging a divergent path to an unknowable future.

    The Guest Post

A day in the life of Archer Fairfax

Archer Fairfax, ostensibly, is a student at Eton College, a boys’ school, in the year 1883.  But of course Archer Fairfax isn’t a real name, and he isn’t even a boy, but a cross-dressing girl mage named Iolanthe Seabourne.

The following is a typical day for Archer Fairfax at the beginning of Michaelmas Half (fall semester)—or, if you will, at the beginning of The Perilous Sea, book 2 of the Elemental trilogy and sequel to The Burning Sky. It is a pretty good time for Fairfax. But as readers of fiction know, if things are going well at the beginning of a book, it can only mean one thing: @#%! is about to go down.

But let’s not tell Fairfax that yet.

6:00am Up and dressed. Once Titus has finished constructing the new entrance to his laboratory, I’ll be up at 4:50 every day, to start training in the Crucible at precisely 5am. But for now, an extra hour of sleep.

6:15am In Titus’s room for tea. Well, tea sits on the desk and grows cold while we kiss.

6:40am The corridor echoes with the noises of boys getting ready in the morning. I return to my own room, because this is about the time boys who had neglected to finish their homework the night before knock on my door in a panic.

7:05am Wintervale, Cooper, Titus, and I leave our residence house, bidding good morning to Mrs. Dawlish, our dame, and Mrs. Hancock, Mrs. Dawlish’s second in command and an agent of Atlantis. Wintervale asks if they have any further news from Kashkari, our friend from the Subcontinent whose steamer was delayed by a storm in the Arabian Sea. No further news.

    7:30am Latin Prose.

8:45am Breakfast back at Mrs. Dawlish’s, after early school.

    9:45am Mathematics.

    11:15am Construing.

1pm Midday meal at Mrs. Dawlish’s.

2:45pm More construing, which is translating a passage aloud, often word for word—these boys suffer from an atrocious education, if I must venture an opinion. They bear it manfully and forget what they learn as soon as class is dismissed.

5pm Tea. There is nothing the boys love more than food, and tea is their fourth meal of the day. I take tea with Wintervale and Titus—Kashkari too, ordinarily, but he hasn’t arrived yet, which is a bit of a relief, as I keep feeling that boy sees right through my lies. Wintervale reminisces about the Old Country, which he’d had to leave as a child. Really, he should be a bit more discreet. Don’t think he should be talking about unicorns and pegasus-drawn chariots in front of me, who is supposed to be a nonmage from colonial Africa.

7pm Cooper and I sit together over our homework. I have finished most of mine and some of Titus’s, as he is at the laboratory making that new entrance. Very, very labor intensive stuff.

    8:30pm Supper.

9:30pm Finish the rest of my homework. Boys flit in and out with questions on Latin and Greek. Cooper comes with the offer of a bar of chocolate. Dear old Cooper. When I’m gone I shall miss him.

10:15pm Titus shoos out Cooper and the other boys. With his body blocking the door, we sneak a kiss. He tells me he has missed me. I tell him to count himself lucky that he gets to see me every day now—it was such a long separation for us this summer. “Every day of the rest of my life will still not be enough time with you,” he says. And I am reminded that for him, the rest of his life is counted in months, perhaps weeks.  I hold him tight and tell him that I will keep him safe, always.

10:45pm It is after lights-out. I am almost asleep, but I know Titus is back at his laboratory, working. Sigh, that boy. I love him so much it hurts.

It is her duty and destiny to face and defeat the Bane, the greatest mage tyrant the world has ever known. A suicide task for anyone let alone a sixteen-year-old girl with no training, facing a prophecy that foretells a fiery clash to the death.

Prince Titus of Elberon has sworn to protect Iolanthe at all costs but he’s also a powerful mage committed to obliterating the Bane to avenge the death of his family—even if he must sacrifice both Iolanthe and himself to achieve his goal.
