    The Description…

New intrigues, adventures, and stunning revelations fill the penultimate installment of #1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole’s electrifying Arcana Chronicles.

In a world teetering on the edge . . .

When Evie receives life-changing—and possibly game-changing—news, she has trouble believing it. Why doesn’t she feel any different? Is it possible someone she trusts might be lying?

With enemies at every turn . . .

Tensions seethe inside the castle of lost time as Evie starts to doubt her own sanity. Answers can be found outside their stronghold, but will Death help her find them—or prevent her from learning the truth about her future and Jack’s possible survival?

    Darkness beckons.

A mysterious, sinister power begins to affect the Arcana in its path. Forced out into the wasteland alone, Evie must depend on unexpected allies. But as a battle with Richter looms, can her new alliance defeat the Dark Calling before hell reigns on earth?

    The Review

Unexpected. Heartbreaking. Shocking. Surprising. Intense. Amazing. Game-changer. THE DARK CALLING will make jaws drop – many, many times. It promises twists that are astonishing, unforeseen, exciting, fascinating, epic. A new player is revealed. A few players make their exit. Others make their power plays. And several players struggle just to survive.

With the game nearing its end, the post-Flash world is falling even further into ruin, causing some cards to weaken – from hunger, from loss of power, from madness. The Fool continues to make moves, pushing players toward an outcome he has not yet revealed. The final card makes itself known with devastating consequences. Plans and alliances have to be reassessed. And the Empress will have far more to deal with then she could ever have imagined.

With food supplies running low, and desperation growing among those that remain in the Ash, the safest place for Evie is with Death. But when his home turns from haven to danger zone, she’ll have to take her chances with the slavers, baggers, and others not in her alliance. Players like Richter and Zara.

Unable to tap into the strongest of her powers, in mourning and stunned by the turns of events that made her go on the run, out of contact with Matthew, and unsure about what comes next, she’ll have to trust in the tenuous alliance she has with a card she defeated in the past, find a way to reach an ally she does trust with her life, keep ahead of those in pursuit, find food that doesn’t involve cannibalism, and learn how to defeat her newest nemesis.

Kresley Cole is a master at keeping the thrill, the heat, the heartache alive well into a series – and she brought that mastery to this installment in spades. It is nail-bitingly suspenseful. There are a multitude of surprises. There are tragic, heart-rending losses. There is enough romance in a single kiss to more than satisfy.

The game continues on toward its seemingly inevitable, cataclysmic conclusion. But how it will end remains a mystery. Who the victor will be has yet to be divulged. Whose alliances will hold is undetermined. Who will even be capable of fighting in the final installment is unknown. And whether Evie will give herself over to the Red Witch is still uncertain. All of which guarantee a gripping and wildly entertaining read with the promise of an even more extraordinary, astounding, breathtaking series conclusion.

THE DARK CALLING is exceptional, riveting, unpredictable, unforgettable, must-devour, and well worth the wait. Those who have been looking for answers will finally have them. Those who can’t get enough of the Empress’s complicated love life will be satiated. Those looking for an edge-of-your-seat page-turner will be perched precariously on the very edge of their seats, flying through every single page. And those not looking to be left on the edge of a cliff at the story’s end will be over-the-moon happy, but just as eagerly awaiting the next installment as if they were.

    The Review

If the wait for the next installment in Kresley Cole’s Arcana Chronicles has been killing you, DAY ZERO is guaranteed to help ease the pain. With Arcana Rising’s release still two weeks away, this companion novel will bring you back into the world, give you heretofore unseen peeks at the characters you adore, detest, or are intrigued by, introduce you to characters you haven’t yet gotten the chance to know, and tease of things still to come in this deadly game they’re playing.

DAY ZERO is not a “take it or leave it” tease of a story. It offers real insight into the game and its players. It expands the world. It’s substantive enough to make you feel invested in the characters’ outcomes. It is every bit as riveting as the full-length novels. And it leaves you just as eager for more.

If you have not yet read the other novels in this series it is not recommended that you read this book, as it does contain major spoilers that are better discovered in context.

If you’re not typically a fan of companion novels, set any hesitation you may have aside. You should definitely read this book. It’s awesome and amazing. It’s not some random plot outside of the main storyline with characters you may or may not be interested in. It involves the main characters, at a pivotal point in the story. It introduces other key characters who either have or will play a major role. And it teases the start to the next book in the series.

Plus, as is always to be expected from Kresley Cole, there is fantastic writing that will make you want to immediately restart the series from the beginning with the information you now know. It will also make you wish you could read even more from the points of view of the characters whose Day Zero experiences she shared.

Whether you’re hoping the game will end without a victor, or you have chosen who you think you want to win, reading DAY ZERO might just change your mind. So, if you are invested in the outcome of the series and its characters, discovering what this novel reveals is an absolute must.

    Author: Kresley Cole
    Release date: January 6, 2015
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
    Pages: 320
    Formats: Hardcover, audio, eBook

Can Evie convince her rival loves to work together? Their survival depends on it in this third book of #1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole’s Arcana Chronicles, a nonstop action tale of rescue, redemption, and a revenge most wicked.

    Heartbreaking decisions
Evie was almost seduced by the life of comfort that Death offered her—until Jack was threatened by two of the most horrific Arcana, The Lovers. She will do anything to save him, even escape Death’s uncanny prison, full of beautiful objects, material comforts…and stolen glances from a former love.

    Uncertain victory
Despite leaving a part of her heart behind with Death, Evie sets out into a frozen and perilous post-apocalyptic wasteland to meet up with her allies and launch an attack on The Lovers and the vast army they command. Such formidable enemies require a battle plan, and the only way to kill them once and for all may mean Evie, Jack, and Death allying. Evie doesn’t know what will prove more impossible: surviving slavers, plague, Bagmen and other Arcana—or convincing Jack and Death to work together.

    Two heroes returned
There’s a thin line between love and hate, and Evie just doesn’t know where she stands with either Jack or Death. Will this unlikely trio be able to defeat The Lovers without killing one another first?

Note: This review is based on an eARC received from the author in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    The Review

Kresley Cole takes readers on a twisted and crazy ride in DEAD OF WINTER, a ride that is non-stop until the moment it goes skyrocketing over the edge of a cliff and head-first into the ground far below. This third installment in the series is the most shocking, the most heartbreaking, with the most jaw-dropping ending yet. It is explosive. It is all-consuming. The tension is combustible. The enemies are disturbing and sinister. The ending is of the shriek out loud variety.

In order to save Jack from The Lovers, the most macabre of the Arcana yet, Evie must escape Death and leave behind the comfort, safety and protection she had with him. But if she thought Death was going to let her go so easily, she was mistaken.

With an enemy that is more cunning and vicious than any she has encountered hell-bent on her capture, former allies unwilling or unable to come to her aid, The Fool more cryptic than ever, she’ll need all the help she can get. Even if it means convincing Jack and Death to work together to take them out. And even if it means if they do succeed she’ll have a choice to make and a heart to break when it’s all over.

DEAD OF WINTER continues only moments after the events in ENDLESS KNIGHT. It drops readers right back into the heart of the action as Evie races to save the boy she can’t stop loving, even if she can no longer trust him. It builds in intensity as time runs out before his captors’ threats to do unspeakable things to him become reality. And it continues to build as the truth about The Lovers comes to light, her history with them is revealed, and her plan to take them out goes into action.

Author Kresley Cole took a huge risk and pulled out all the stops with this novel. She teases and torments, she shocks and horrifies, she delights and infuriates, she saves and she destroys. Between the bagmen, slavers, the plague, the world without sun, and the twisted machinations of The Lovers, the author paints a darker, more grim and even gorier picture than she has before in this series. But with two very different but incredibly sexy boys – mortal and immortal – vying for Evie’s heart, she manages to make room for some heat.

Alliances will end. Lives will end. Cards will fall. New Arcana will be named. New paths will be taken. The game will go on.

DEAD OF WINTER promises devastation, heartache and loss. It drops bombshell after bombshell. It will stun. It will surprise. It will amaze. It will electrify. It will leave every reader begging for the next book. It is truly Kresley Cole at her best.

    Today’s topic is…

Books I’m Looking Forward to in 2014

Last year, it seems, I cheated a little and I changed the post to top ten books in a series I’m dying to continue reading. This year I’m going to do the same.

Because there are already at least 80 books I’m pining for that will be releasing next year and there’s no way I can narrow that list down to ten. So this tens list is in NO way complete. Not by far.

Of course I just had to do an “honorable mentions” section listing a few other books I’m dying to read. And I will be posting a list of Top 10 Debut Books I’m Looking Forward to in 2014 on The Annex to fill some of those gaps I’m leaving.

But, to make things easier on myself, I decided to leave off the books in 2014 that I am looking forward to but have already read or am reading. Books such as UNHINGED by A.G. Howard, INDEPENDENT STUDY by Joelle Charbonneau, EVERTRUE by Brodi Ashton, PANIC by Lauren Oliver, and A LITTLE TOO HOT by Lisa Desrochers.

While this is the hardest list I’ve had to create yet, I think I’m happy with my choices. I just wish some of those “must read” 2014 books had covers… or titles.

    Review: Endless Knight

    Endless Knight

ENDLESS KNIGHT by Kresley Cole released in the U.S. today, October 1, 2013, in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 336 pages.

ENDLESS KNIGHT is the second book in Author Kresley Cole’s The Arcana Chronicles.

NOTE: This review is based on an eARC received from the author in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

In the second book of the Arcana Chronicles Evie has now fully come into her powers as the tarot Empress. And Jackson was there to see it all. In the aftermath of killing Arthur, the tarot Alchemist, Evie realizes that a war is brewing between the other teens that, following the apocalypse, have been given powers and its kill or be killed.

Things get even more complicated when Evie meets Death, the mysterious, sexy Endless Knight. Somehow the Empress and Death share a romantic history – one that Evie can’t remember, but Death can’t forget. She is drawn to the Endless Knight, but is in love with Jack. Determined to discover why she’s been granted these powers, Evie struggles to accept her place in a prophecy that will either save the world, or completely destroy it.

ENDLESS KNIGHT is dark and seductive. It’s intense. It’s riveting. It is action-packed from the very first sentence to the very last word on the very last page. It is beautiful and it’s gruesome. It’s tantalizing, it’s thrilling, it’s mind-blowing. It takes readers on an exhilarating, nerve-wracking, suspense-filled and positively electrifying ride. A ride that will leave them dangling precariously off the edge of a very steep cliff.

One player down. Twenty-one remain. The game has now officially begun. The Empress has made the first move and Death is now ready to make his.

With his sights set on Evie, it’s only a matter of time before he finds her, before he acts upon the threats of violence he’s been taunting her with, before they must face one another in a battle, a fight that Evie has never before won. Not as the May Queen. Not as the Red Witch, Phyta. Never.

But as the Poison Princess she must find a way to defeat him. Because in this game, where the prize is immortality and there can be only one winner, the stakes are higher than ever before. With the world on the verge of collapse this might be the final game that gets played. With no one else in their alliance strong enough defeat Death, Evie is their only hope for survival. And with only one lifetime to spend with Jack, losing now would mean losing him forever.

So she must do whatever it takes to win, to defeat Death, an immortal foe. Even if that means giving him her heart.

Author Kresley Cole expanded the world of the Arcana in this sequel – new characters were introduced, new alliances were made, new battles were fought, and one character’s past was revealed. She turned up the heat. She increased the suspense, the tension, the drama. She delivered shocking surprises. She uncovered secrets, lies, betrayals. She created a story that sizzles, is wicked and sexy and utterly enthralling.

ENDLESS KNIGHT picks up where POISON PRINCESS left off and immediately answers the question of what happens next, a question fans of this series have been anxiously awaiting. It continues the characters’ journey across its danger-filled landscape and presents them with new complications, new allies and enemies and even deadlier hurdles to overcome.

The story is filled with unexpected twists and turns that will keep the pages turning. It adds a new bad boy to the mix to make things even more interesting. It keeps things exciting with a new setting and new characters with intriguing abilities. And it all comes together through the author’s gorgeous, grisly, sarcastic, intoxicating and absolutely phenomenal writing.

    Reviewer gives this book…

Like In-N-Out Burger‘s infamous secret menu this one deserves my off-the-menu 6 star rating.

    On a personal note…

Every time I try to write down my personal thoughts about this book I realize that there’s just no way I can do it justice. My words are inadequate to describe just how I felt – how I feel – about this book.

I want to shout, “Oh my gosh you have to buy this book, you have to devour this book and you have to talk to me all about it once you have!”

Because I’m dying to talk to anyone and everyone about it. I’m dying to see what readers thought about what happened with Evie and Jack, what happened with Death and most of all what happened at the end. That ending… that ending is killing me.

I want to talk about how amazing it was to be back in this world, to see what happened after that ending in the first book that absolutely destroyed me, that broke my heart and made me so nervous about what would happen in this book. But words fail.

I want to talk about how reading this book felt like coming home – albeit to a dark and twisted world where human beings are more than a little bit savage, where a deadly game is playing out and where two of those players are favorite characters of mine. But I am unable to express just how happy it made me, how easy it was to love this story.

I want to share just what I thought about how things changed between Evie and Jack, how wary I now am about certain characters I used to trust, how thrilled I am that Death is everything I hoped he’d be and so much more. But every word that comes to mind is insufficient.

I want to talk to about how much I loved every single word of this story, every single direction it went in, every single interaction between the characters, every new character I met – yes, even Ogen – every single tension-filled, nail-biting, steamy hot, heartbreaking, chilling moment. But there are no words.

My words to describe the awesomeness that is this book pale in comparison to just how phenomenal it really is. They’re fumbling, nonsensical, pathetic little things. But they’re all I have. And not saying anything about this book seems somehow worse. So…

ENDLESS KNIGHT is a fan-freaking-tastic sequel. It blew my mind, patched it up and blew it to pieces all over again. It checked all the boxes. Dark – yes and I would have had it no other way. Sexy – yes, yes, yes and I’m talking the hot, steamy, “fan yourself” kind of sexy. Nerve-wracking – oh yes my nerves were frayed, shot, wrecked by the time I reached the end. Suspenseful – yes and of the “hold your breath” as if that would somehow help variety of suspense. Wicked – deliciously, delectably so. Action-packed – oh there was action, all kinds of action. It was intense, edge-of-your-seat exciting, and abso-freaking-lutely amazing.

In every way ENDLESS KNIGHT is, was and forever will be the perfect book for me. I loved the first book in the series – it was a top five favorite last year – but this book, this shocking and gorgeous and gruesome and jaw-dropping sequel moves this series into my top five favorite YA series of all time.

    Favorite passage…

Can I reprint the entire book here? Probably not….

And as most of this book is super spoiler-y choosing just one passage that isn’t too revealing has been an enormous challenge. Because I want to include the one where Jack said… or the one where Jack did… or the one where Death chose…. Yeah, not at all easy.

But I had to choose a Jack passage. Because any passage about Death would reveal things better left discovered in the book. And it’s only a teeny bit spoiler-y.

“We’re out here with no protection from Baggers, no lookout, and I’m still a heartbeat from taking you! You mesmerizing me too? That’s the only goddamned reason I’d still be thinking about you after all this shit. All my life, I never went looking for trouble, but it always found me! You’re just the latest helping of grief.”

My eyes pricked with tears. “I didn’t want it to be like this.”

    Giveaway: Endless Knight

    Endless Knight

As promised, I am giving away a few copies of ENDLESS KNIGHT by Kresley Cole, a book that totally blew me away when I read it a couple of weeks ago. While I don’t want to go into all of those reasons as I plan on posting my review and because I spotlighted it for my Book Watch post, I can’t just say nothing about this absolutely amazing book in this post.

Because it’s dark and it’s sexy and it’s all sorts of deliciously torturous. Because it left me torn about who I love more. Because the ending destroyed me. Because I can’t get the story, the world, the characters out of my head. Because it has everything I want in a book and so much more.

And because it couldn’t be any more of a “me” book if it tried. It’s abso-freaking-lutely perfect. In every single way.

While I did get to read it early and the finished copy showed up in my mailbox this weekend, I still cannot wait for its release on October 1st so the final version will download to my Kindle and be a part of my permanent collection.

I just knew I was going to love this series when I first read the excerpt of POISON PRINCESS last year. After I read that book I knew the series would be a forever favorite. But after reading ENDLESS KNIGHT it’s officially now an all-time top ten. Yeah, it’s that ridiculously amazing.

In case you haven’t yet seen the excerpt on the series website, I’ll link it again HERE. It is not a scene you will want to miss. Though if you want to be a little more tortured about what happens with Jack after the way things ended in POISON PRINCESS you might want to skip it and discover this particular scene during the course of the read.

Anyway… I’ve gone on long enough. You’re not here to find out what I thought about this amazing book. You’re here to try and win a copy. So I’ll just say – Good luck! And if you’d like to know a little bit more about the two books in this series or its brilliant author, keep reading, below.

    Endless Knight

ENDLESS KNIGHT by Kresley Cole will be released in the U.S. on October 1, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 336 pages.

ENDLESS KNIGHT is the second book in Author Kresley Cole’s The Arcana Chronicles.

The week of October 1st has an insane amount of books releasing that I’m dying to have in my hands right about now. There were so many, in fact, that I opted just to list five of those “other” books releasing at the bottom of this post.

But the book I’m obsessing over the most, the book I am most excited for, and the book that has left its mark on me in a very permanent way is Kresley Cole’s ENDLESS KNIGHT. It’s a book that I was lucky enough to read early. It’s a book that I can’t stop thinking about. It’s a book that I want to experience again as if it were the first time. And it’s a book I plan on re-reading this weekend, along with the first book in the series.

So, yeah, there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that it would be the book to watch this week.

I do plan on writing a review and posting it next week. I can’t get this book out of my mind so I just have to share my non-spoiler-y thoughts about it here on the blog… well… once I’m able to speak about this book without revealing spoilers. Because I feel like this entire book is one ginormous spoiler.

And as I will be writing up a review, I don’t want to go into too many details about what I loved about this book – everything – and what its drawbacks were – there were none – and why I’m so obsessed – Death (the character not the state of being) – and why the ending killed me – as if I’d reveal that!

So I will try to stick within the confines of ENDLESS KNIGHT‘s description when talking about this amazing book and why it’s a book that must, must, must be in the spotlight. Though the description doesn’t even begin to do it justice.

I love Evie’s powers, though she is totally scary when she goes all Empress – vines, thorns, poison. Yeah she’s totally fierce, often wicked and maybe just a little bit bloodthirsty. I would love to talk about Jack, but I can’t say much because any mention of him would be all sorts of spoiler-y. I will say that I do still love him, but…

Death. I am obsessed with Death, the Endless Knight. He intrigued me in Poison Princess and his role in this sequel reveals a lot more about him… and of him. Though as the description doesn’t talk about the latter half of my previous sentence I’ll just stop right now.

But even if I hadn’t read this book and become as obsessed with this story – which blew me out of the water, sky high and into outer space (I’m still in orbit) – I would still would have chosen ENDLESS KNIGHT as the book to watch. Because I think this author is simply amazing and her series couldn’t be more of a “me” series if it tried. It’s dark, it’s sexy, it’s a little bit gruesome, it has intriguing lore, a fierce heroine, wickedly yummy bad boys and brilliant writing. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

Well, actually, that’s not true. I could use the next book in the series right about now. Because that ending? Oh my gosh. How the heck am I supposed to wait for an entire year and then some for the next installment in this fan-freaking-tastic series?

So, without any hesitation, as much as I love so many of the books releasing the week of October 1st, there was no other book than ENDLESS KNIGHT that I wanted to put in the spotlight this week. It’s a book I’m going to have to keep re-reading until I get it out of my system. Yes, it’s one of those books.

And if you want to get a longer look than just the description provides, head over to the series website and check out this EXCERPT.
