    Today’s topic is…

    Best ____ of 2013

Last year I chose favorite quotes. But this year I’m going for CHARACTER COUPLES. Even though many of this year’s reads paired up characters I’d rather see paired with someone else, there were quite a few character couples I love, love, loved.

And instead of rambling about all of my reasons why I love these character couples I thought I’d let the characters speak for themselves. They do a much better job of it than I ever could. Though I’m so very tempted to chime in…

    Favorite Character Couples 2013

    1.

    Shadowfever

SHADOWFEVER (Fever #5) by Karen Marie Moning

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Mac and Barrons…

“I’m not the hero, Mac. Never have been. Never will be. Let us be perfectly clear: I’m not the antihero, either, so quit waiting to discover my hidden potential. There’s nothing to redeem me.”

    I want him anyway.

It’s what he wanted to know.

I exhale impatiently and shove hair from my face. “Are you going to talk me to death or fuck me, Jericho Barrons?”

    2.

    Endless Knight

ENDLESS KNIGHT (The Aracana Chronicles #2) by Kresley Cole

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Evie and Death…

“What are you thinking about, creature?” His words were husky.

Licking your runes? Thank God he couldn’t read my thoughts anymore. Face flushing, I grasped for something to say. “I bet you were expecting a taller Empress this time around.” Lame.

“I would change nothing about your appearance.”

When we locked eyes in the mirror, his burning gaze made even more heat cascade through my body.

Death rose with that lethal grace and strode toward me. I swallowed. Would he try to kiss me? And what would I do if he did?

    3.

    Through the Zombie Glass

THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS (White Rabbit Chronicles #2) by Gena Showalter

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Alice and Cole…

“I just… I can’t seem to stay away. You’re like a magnet, and I’m drawn. And what about you? You’re supposed to yell at me, scream profanities and tell me to go and never come back. Why aren’t you yelling?” he asked almost bitterly.

Because, despite everything, I liked that he was here.

    Foolish girl.

“You want me to yell?” I said, and drew in a deep breath, preparing. “I will.”

He shook his head, looked up at me through the thick shield of those dark, dark lashes. “It’s too late for that. I’m going to kiss you, Ali.”

Kiss… Yes… No! “You made your bed.”

“I know. But I still want you in it.”

    4.

    With All My Soul

WITH ALL MY SOUL (Soul Screamers #7) by Rachel Vincent

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Kaylee and Tod…

“This is the most frighteningly beautiful mouth I have ever seen. The most terrifyingly delicious lips I have ever tasted. These lips make me hungry for more every time I kiss them. This mouth, and the tongue inside it…they speak words I hang on to. Words that make me want to be a better man. Words I would gladly build my entire afterlife around. But they also say things that terrify me. Things that send chills all the way to my heart. They speak about dangers I can’t prevent. Threats I can’t always see. They threaten to do things that could get you hurt, when every single beat of my heart tells me that I need to protect you.”

I stared at him, stunned, and he leaned in to kiss me again, softly. Almost chastely.

    5.

    Crash Into You

CRASH INTO YOU (Pushing the Limits #3) by Katie McGarry

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Isaiah and Rachel…

Rachel tries to lower her head, but I reach up and touch her chin. “Don’t.”

I tilt her head up, engulfing her line of vision. She’s going to see me and me alone. No cars, no Zach, none of the other assholes trying to win her eye during the night. The sweet scent of jasmine entwining with the salty smell of the beach rushes into my lungs. I lick my lips, wanting to kiss her, but I’m too full of energy to dare let my lips brush hers.

Beneath my fingertips, her pulse beats wildly. “I don’t understand you, Isaiah.”

“Then we have something in common, because I don’t get you at all.”

    6.

    Sweet Peril Cover

SWEET PERIL (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Anna and Kaidan…

“For the record,” he ground out in a guttural whisper, “I was more myself with you during those three days than I’ve ever been with anyone in my life. It’d be easier if I could be fake with you, but you bring out everything in me, little Ann. All of it.”

His sudden fierceness frightened and excited me. He was not in his right mind. I blinked several times before taking a step back and running into the rail. I could do nothing but stare as he went on.

    7.

    Foreplay

FOREPLAY (The Ivy Chronicles #1) by Sophie Jordan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Pepper and Reece…

He gave my sweatshirt a small tug, inexorably pulling me toward him, bit by bit, and it was like the other night again. His presence was overwhelming, the heat that emanated from him. The blue of his eyes that seemed to turn to smoke when he looked at me. I was under his spell. Maybe I had never ceased to be. I’d been spellbound since our first kiss and especially since the night I spent in his loft. Maybe this was what had brought me back here in the middle of the night. Maybe I was hoping to repeat the experience.

“I’ll never lie to you, Pepper.” That soft utterance blew through me like a sonic blast. Crazy, but I heard more than his vow to be honest. The words were full of the expectation that there would be a him and me, an us. That we were really doing this. Whatever this was.

    8.

    While You're Away

WHILE YOU’RE AWAY by Jessa Holbrook

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Sarah and Will…

It was easy to kiss Will Spencer. We moved in tandem, both turning at the same time. It was like we were machined to fit together, the right key in the right lock. Rising on my toes to meet his mouth, I looped my arms around his neck. Stretched against him, I felt long and tall, and strangely lovely. I wasn’t transformed by his touch. I was revealed.

    9.

    The Beautiful and the Cursed

THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED (The Disposessed #1) by Page Morgan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Ingrid and Luc…

Ingrid froze as he grazed his fingers through her hair, scattering a few pins to the floor. Then he gripped the back of her head, his tangled fingers tugging at her hair, and Ingrid thought she could finally read something in the way he looked at her: a longing so tangible that it made her ache.

“I haven’t ended you because you’re my human.”

And then Luc did what he hadn’t done in the orangery. His lips found hers. It was a light sweep of a kiss, and Ingrid, who’d quit breathing, feared he was going to stop again. The idea of it knifed through her and her hands itched to reach up, latch on to him, and refuse the retreat.

    It didn’t come to that.

    10.

    The Collector

THE COLLECTOR (The Collector #1) by Victoria Scott

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Dante and Charlie…

“But you need to know the truth. I didn’t mean for this to happen.” I stop, considering what I just said. “Actually, I guess I did mean for this to happen. At first. But then I got to know you, Charlie. I got to see how you are, the things you do for other people. The way you smile when there’s nothing left to smile about, and the way you laugh…it hurts to even hear it. Because it reminds me what it’s like to live. To be happy.” I take a deep breath. “You are beautiful, Charlie. You’re so beautiful, and I can’t believe I let you think you weren’t.”

I turn around but focus on the ground. I can’t see her face. It’ll end me. But my eyes are deceitful, and before I can gouge them from my face, they slide up and land on her. On Charlie. And she’s crying. Tears rolling down her cheeks, sliding into a wide, happy smile.

    Wishful Thinking Character Couples

As I mentioned, there were a number of characters I’d have liked to see paired up with someone other than the character they ended up with… or the character they’re with at the moment.

So I decided to create a Top 10 Wishful Thinking Character Couples list. But instead of listing them here, since I have exactly ten, I thought I’d create a completely independent list over at The Annex.

Best Books I’ve Read in 2013

I read a ton of awesome books this year. Many from the same series by the same author. But as I was trying so very hard to keep my list to just ten, I decided to choose only one book from each series, even if I read multiple books in a particular series that I thought were amazing.

And I couldn’t list all my favorite reads this year since one or two of them were a secret. Nor could I list all the 2013 releases I love, love, loved since I read some of them in 2012. But I’m not too sad about that, because reading them last year made creating this list just a little bit easier.

There were also a few books I loved in 2013 that were not YA. But in keeping with my typical YA only “best” list, I didn’t include them in this post. Though I plan on posting my non-YA favorites on The Annex. Yes, I’m cheating just a little… as usual. But I just can’t seem to help myself.

    Anyway…

It took me ages to narrow my list down from my original picks and to keep my “honorable mentions” to only four titles, just like last year. But after much hair pulling and nail-biting I was able to get it done.

    line2

The Best I’ve Read in 2013

    1.

    With All My Soul

WITH ALL MY SOUL by Rachel Vincent

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

As sad as I was to see this series end, I still couldn’t help falling madly in love with this last installment. It was heartbreaking and nerve-wracking and exciting and heartwarming and I loved every single minute of the read.

I especially loved the fact that I was able to become intrigued by a brand new character, that the story wasn’t rushed and that the ending didn’t leave me feeling like something was missing. It was the perfect ending to an amazing series and I couldn’t have loved it any more than I did.

    2.

    Endless Knight

    ENDLESS KNIGHT by Kresley Cole

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Kresley Cole’s Arcana Chronicles are completely and totally amazing. They are so my kind of books. From beginning to end in both books in this series I was utterly riveted.

And while I didn’t think it was possible, this second book in the series was even more exciting than the first. It was darker, it was hotter, it was all sorts of sexy. The lore was fascinating. And it made me fall head-over-heels in love with Death just like I hoped it would.

To say that I am dying for the next installment in this series would be a major understatement.

    3.

    Through the Zombie Glass

THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS by Gena Showalter

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I read both books in this series in 2013 and absolutely loved both of them. They were unputdownable reads and I couldn’t have been more surprised by the fact that I fell so completely in love with zombie books that gave a nod to Alice in Wonderland.

Gena Showalter was incredibly creative with her stories. She did not skimp on the action. It was edge-of-your-seat exciting. And the love story was angst-filled and twisty-turny to the max.

And as I opted to choose just one of the two books in this series as a favorite, I had to select the one that absolutely killed me in the best possible way.

    4.

    The Eternity Cure

THE ETERNITY CURE by Julie Kagawa

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I did not expect to love the Blood of Eden series more than I loved the author’s faerie books. But oh my gosh I couldn’t help myself. Dystopia and vampires are an unexpected combination but one that the author made work so amazingly well.

The characters, the epic journey, the killer cliffhanger all worked together to make this one of my favorite books and not simply a 2013 favorite. I’m talking all-time favorite.

    5.

    Crash Into You

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I fell under Katie McGarry’s spell in 2013. She is a fan-freaking-tastic writer and her Pushing the Limits series is one of my very most favorite contemporary YA series.

I read all three books in this series, plus the novella, in 2013, which made it very hard to choose only one of the books for my top ten list. But I had to choose Isaiah and Rachel’s story, even though I adored Noah and Echo’s story so, so much.

Perhaps it was getting to know and love Isaiah before reading his story that made me love it that much more. Or perhaps it’s simply just that Isaiah is amazing. But whatever the reason, it is my favorite of the series and it’s definitely one of my favorite reads from 2013.

    6.

    Afterglow

    AFTERGLOW by Karsten Knight

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I was devastated to see this series end. The world that Karsten Knight created was so unique and fascinating and exciting. The characters were lovable and detestable and completely and totally kick-a**. And this final installment in the series was just as phenomenal as its predecessors.

And that ending. Oh. My. Gosh. That ending. While I can’t talk about that ending, I will just say that it gives me hope. For a certain character. Oh the possibilities.

    7.

    Star Cursed Cover

    STAR CURSED by Jessica Spotswood

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I was so glad that I got the chance to read both books in The Cahill Witch Chronicles this year. I was completely surprised by how much I loved each of the books. They are not stories in my typical go-to genre and yet both books are among my most favorites.

I couldn’t help but fall in love with the story, the setting, the characters. It’s a totally addictive read and one that’s definitely re-read worthy. Though even after a re-read, it’s no easier to have to wait for the next installment in the series. This I know all too well.

    8.

    The Beautiful and the Cursed

THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED by Page Morgan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Yet another unexpected favorite on my list is Page Morgan’s THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED. If someone told me that I could fall in love with a gargoyle I would have totally rolled my eyes at them. I might have even told them that they were crazy. I would have definitely thought it.

Well, this author made me not only fall in love with a gargoyle, but her story about them. The sequel is one of my most anticipated reads for 2014. And the wait is killing me.

    9.

    While You're Away

WHILE YOU’RE AWAY by Jessa Holbrook

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I read this book in its serialized format, with just a few chapters available to read in one sitting. It was exquisite torture. This story was tantalizing and nerve-wracking and beautiful and nerve-wracking – yes I said it twice, but it needed to be said two times… if not more.

I was made to root for a love story that I never would have thought I’d cheer for. I was made to wish and hope for a happily ever after for two characters who, at first, I didn’t think deserved one. I was anxious, I was fearful, I was tentatively hopeful and at times I was even sad. But I was keeping my fingers crossed the entire time for the slim chance that things would work out.

    10.

    A Touch Menacing

A TOUCH MENACING by Leah Clifford

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Leah Clifford’s Touch Trilogy is one of my favorite series of all time. It’s so very different from anything I’ve ever read. It’s very dark. It is full of surprises. Shocking surprises. Devastating surprises. But it is wicked, wicked awesome.

The end of this final installment in the series left me in tears. And, no, I won’t say whether they’re happy or sad tears. But if you have read this book or you’ve read any of the books in this series by this author I think you will know exactly what kind of tears there were.

This last book was non-stop action, with more than a few punches to the face. I couldn’t devour it fast enough. It was that epic. And if I didn’t think it could get any better, the unpublished epilogue made this book that much more off-the-charts amazing for me. Holy-freaking-wow.

Other Books I Love, Love, Loved

    SweetPeril

    SWEET PERIL by Wendy Higgins

Exciting. Sexy as heck. Captivating from start to finish. Delicious. An absolute must.

    The Testing

    THE TESTING by Joelle Charbonneau

Gripping. Surprising. Totally addictive. A total stand-out.

    The Burning Sky

THE BURNING SKY by Sherry Thomas

Magical. Enchanting. Captivating. Epic. Fan-freaking-tastically good.

    Pivot Point

    PIVOT POINT by Kasie West

    Intriguing. Nerve-wracking. Unputdownable. Amazing.

    line3

I tried to keep my rambling to a minimum when it came to my top ten picks for 2013. But I may have gone on just a little longer than I’d planned. Oh well…

But I just couldn’t help myself. They are my favorite reads this year… well, most of them. There are a few others…

I will try to be a lot less wordy in the rest of the posts this week, but when it comes to favorite reads I always feel the need to go on… and on… and on.

But now that I’m done I can’t wait to check out what your favorite reads are, so be sure to leave a link to your posts or Goodreads shelf in the Linky List that follows just below the giveaways.

SWEET PERIL Blog Tour: ‘This…That…or The Other’ Guest Post + Giveaway

    Sweet Peril Banner

I am so excited to have a stop on the SWEET PERIL Blog Tour. I am also so sad that today is the last day of the tour. It’s been almost a year, to the day, since the author stopped by for the SWEET EVIL Blog Tour for an interview and “this or that” grilling. (If you’d like to check it out, it’s HERE.)

This time around I let Wendy, Anna and Kai off easy. I only asked just a few questions. Because the author needs to get back to writing and editing SWEET RECKONING so that the agonizing wait for its release doesn’t get worse due to missed deadlines and delayed release dates. And Anna and Kai need to get back to….

    Anyway….

I read – and love, love, love, love, loved – SWEET PERIL. I even managed to wrangle my thoughts for my review. But only just barely. There is some rambling involved.

I’m now just hoping this next thirteen or so months moves very, very quickly so that I can find out how this amazing series ends. Not that I want it to, of course. With all the world-building I could totally see this as a five-book series. At least.

While my “This… That… or The Other” guest post isn’t the longest of posts, it is so full of win. Wendy Higgins’ answers just make me grin, Anna’s make me smile and Kai’s make me blush. I’m so very curious if you’ll feel the same.

So, I’ll stop rambling. And I’ll let you discover it for yourself. Some questions do reference SWEET PERIL but they’re not in the least bit spoiler-y.

But first here’s a little bit about this just released second book in The Sweet Trilogy. The guest post follows, along with some information about the author, the very awesome giveaway and the other stops on this tour.

Oh and I just have to say thank you to the amazing Wendy Higgins for stopping by, for sharing her characters for a few brief moments, and for writing a series that is unforgettable.

    About SWEET PERIL

    Sweet Peril Cover
Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

    Guest Post

    This… That… or The Other….

    …and why

    Wendy Higgins…

BOOK: SWEET EVIL, SWEET PERIL or SWEET RECKONING

Wendy – Sweet Evil has my heart a smidge more than the others, probably because there were no deadlines or pressures to “get it right” – just pure inspiration for fun.

    florals_001

LOVE STORY (yes I’m asking again with a twist): Eternal love, unrequited love or forbidden love

    Wendy – Forbidden love!!!

    florals_001

SCENE: In the kitchen, in the closet or on the island

Wendy – In the kitchen, baby!

    florals_001

ENDING (yes I’m fishing here!): Happily ever after, unhappily ever after or tragic but hopeful

Wendy – I’m a HEA kind of girl, but the road to the HEA must be paved in heartache.

    florals_001

BAD BOY: Dark and dangerous, like candy – hard on the outside but with a soft center – or all bark but no bite

Wendy – Is there a question here? ‘Cause I like all that. 🙂 Especially dark and dangerous…like candy…

    florals_001

LOVE SCENE a.k.a. sexy times: Hot and steamy, a tantalizing tease or sweet and innocent

Wendy – I’m torn between Hot and Steamy or Tantalizing Tease. I’m going to go with TT to build tension.

    Anna Whitt…

On the road, cooking dinner on doing laundry

Anna – I do like cooking, but on the road is where it’s at. 🙂

    florals_001

Dark and mysterious, wicked but redeemable or sexy but sweet

Anna – Sexy but sweet. I am SO over mysterious, lol!

    florals_001

Blake, Kopano or Jay (and no you can’t say Kai!)

Anna – Oy vey! You’re going to get me in trouble… *whispers* Kopano…

Fiktshun – I sort of guessed you’d say “on the road.” But you seemed to have a lot of fun doing laundry. 😉 And LOL sorry about the last question. I just had to ask. I mean, ya know, after….

    Kaidan Rowe…

All night, all day or always

Kai – Yes, yes, and yes. Must I choose?

    florals_001

    Love, lust or infatuation

Kai – Is this a trick question? What would you do if I said love, eh? Would you even take me seriously? ha

    florals_001

By the pool, in the bedroom or against the washer

Kai – Damn. I…hm. Wow, that’s hard. Okay then. Right. Against the washer, luv.

Fiktshun – Noooooo… you don’t have to choose. And I would totally take you seriously. I mean, my blog is called Fiktshun for a reason. Reality does not have to enter the picture. And… um… hard you say?

    Review: Sweet Peril

    Sweet Peril Cover

    addtogoodreads

SWEET PERIL by Wendy Higgins will be released in the U.S. on April 30, 2013 in paperback, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in all formats at AMAZON and in paperback and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HaperTeen, the print edition is 384 pages.

SWEET PERIL is the second book in author Wendy Higgins’ The Sweet Trilogy. The third and final book, SWEET RECKONING, is slated for release in June 2014.

    Line_001

    Description…

    Line_001

An incredibly enthralling and wickedly delicious sequel, SWEET PERIL takes readers on an emotional roller coaster ride that will leave them breathless. Full of surprises and heart-stopping thrills, this second book in the series turns up the heat, ratchets up the danger and intensifies the chemistry between its characters, making this installment an even more electrifying and riveting read than its predecessor.

With the Dukes still on edge, Anna Whitt has been playing the role she needs to play in order to keep their suspicions at bay. She’s also been keeping her distance from Kaidan Rowe, a challenge that makes pretending to be a party girl look easy.

But when she learns of a prophecy that allows for the possibility that someday the Nephilim could finally be free, she is eager to make that possibility a reality.

Finding allies willing to stand with her against the Dukes is a huge risk, but one she’s prepared to take if it means that there could be a future for her and Kai. It’s a task that requires time and an enormous amount of patience. Because tracking down Neph that can be trusted is not something she can do on her own. Not if she wants to stay off the Dukes’ radar.

Which means she’ll have to enlist the help of her father, Belial. She’ll have to work closely with Kopano, the only other Neph whose father won’t be keeping a close watch.

And she’ll have to deal with the fact that doing this on her own, without Kai, could increase the distance between them, a distance made up of much more than just miles.

Author Wendy Higgins knows just how to captivate readers and draw them into her wonderfully dark and incredibly suspenseful story. She builds on the existing tension between her two main characters. She introduces obstacles that not only keep them apart but that could make that separation permanent. She elevates the dangers they must face.

And she infuses her story with all the elements that will make readers swoon, sigh, scream in frustration, bite their nails and hold their breath in anticipation for what is to come – heartbreak, loss, love, jealousy, angst.

Her characters are diverse. Their interactions tantalizing, terrifying, comforting, intense or some combination thereof. And their individuality, their uniqueness and the dynamic they bring serve to set this story apart.

SWEET PERIL is even more exhilarating, nerve-wracking and heartbreaking than the first book in the trilogy. And with the explosive chemistry the author built up between Anna and Kaidan in this sequel, it is far more steamy.

Dark. Danger-filled. Intoxicating. SWEET PERIL is an absolute must-read in author Wendy Higgins’ Sweet Trilogy.

    Reviewer gives this book…

    06menu

Like In-N-Out Burger‘s infamous secret menu this one deserves my off-the-menu 6 star rating.

    On a personal note…

Oh. My. Gosh. Ohmygosh. ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh. Oh my gosh!

I knew I shouldn’t have read this early. I knew I should have waited until the night before the third book in this series was going to be released before I picked up SWEET PERIL. I knew I would be driven crazy if I had to wait for the final book in the series. I KNEW IT!

I waited as long as I possibly could. I really tried. But I finally caved. I didn’t even make it until SWEET PERIL’s release date. And now I’m living in a state of complete and utter torment. I must know what’s going to happen next. I don’t know how I can possibly survive the long wait for June 2014 to roll around to find out how this series ends.

    Because, oh my gosh. Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh.

And no, I’m not being overly dramatic. I am in fact dying to know just what is going to happen in SWEET RECKNONING. Especially after the Dukes’ little pow wow. Especially after what Kaidan said… non-verbally. Especially after everything that happened and everything that the next book promises will happen.

SWEET PERIL was amazing. I didn’t think the author could top what she did with the road trip, but she did. With that one scene where… okay, no spoilers. But it was H.O.T. And if I thought she reached her maximum ability to make me all twisty inside in SWEET EVIL I was so very wrong.

I spent most of the entire book in knots. On a roller coaster. Without a safety belt. Yeah. It was that awesome. And a whole lot more.

Because its awesomeness wasn’t just due to the sizzling chemistry. For starters, there was the suspense. Oh my gosh the suspense. The suspense nearly did away with me. And it wasn’t just because of what was going on with Anna and Kaidan.

I was in suspense about what might happen between Anna and Kope. I was in suspense about what would happen with that piece of information Anna received. I was in suspense about what the Dukes might do at any given time.

But what nearly killed me was that very long, incredibly suspenseful scene toward the end of the book that had me holding my breath. For nearly the entire scene. Yes, I had to read quickly. Really quickly.

And then there was the heartbreak. Which also didn’t just involve Anna and Kai. I completely lost it after one particularly heartbreaking scene. A scene I read with fingers and toes crossed, hoping until the very end that all would be well, only to have my heart crushed.

So, yes, there was tension, suspense, heartbreak. And there was an exciting storyline to tie all of those deliciously torturous elements together. Which made this sequel a must, must, must read.

I could go on. And on. And on. But I probably shouldn’t. I already feel as if I revealed every detail of this story. Hopefully I’ve been vague.

I will just say that I love the direction this story took. It definitely moved the plot forward. And it definitely feels like it was setting this series up for a dramatic finish in the next book.

All the pieces are in place for an epic conclusion. All that remains to be determined is who will end up victorious and who will fall along the way. It sounds so simple, but I just know the ride will be a crazy one. And I am terrified the author will break my heart into a million pieces.

Though she already broke it a few times in SWEET PERIL, she was successful in mending it by the story’s end.

I didn’t think I could love her main characters more than I did, but I do. I didn’t think I could detest the Dukes more than I had, but they became even more despicable in this sequel. And I didn’t think I could become as engrossed in this story when a large part of it didn’t include Kaidan Rowe.

But I was. I was totally consumed by this story. Because even though Kai might not have been in every scene, somehow he was. His presence could always be felt. In every decision Anna made, every thought, every action.

I fell in love with this series the moment I met its characters and my love for it has only grown stronger after reading SWEET PERIL. To say that I’m mildly obsessed would be an understatement.

    Favorite passage…

Okay, there’s no way I could include any of my most favorite passages here. They’re all best discovered in the story itself. If I were to give a peek at just what happened on ARC pgs. 218, 246, 254, 261, 278 and 336 I’d ruin everything.

But there were two passages toward the beginning that I loved. One of which is swoon-y, the other just makes me grin. And nod my head fiercely.

I found myself wondering if Kaidan ever went to the movies. Did he take girls and sit in the very back where it was dark and private? I crossed my legs and arms, then glared at the screen. Sometimes an imagination was an impediment.

This review is based on an ARC I received from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #122

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of April 30th-May 6th that I have pre-ordered.

    05

    ***Not a YA title***

    Oath Bound
    addtogoodreads

OATH BOUND by Rachel Vincent will be released in the U.S. on April 30, 2013 in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and in paperback format at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin MIRA, the print edition is 432 pages.

OATH BOUND is the third and final book in the Unbound series by author Rachel Vincent.

    Line_001

I am so excited for the release of OATH BOUND. I feel like I’ve waited for ages and ages to read Sera and Kris’ story. And I will be reading it the second my pre-order copy downloads to my Kindle.

As much as I would love this series to go on for a couple more books… at least… I can’t wait to see how everything wraps up for Liv and Cam, Kori and Ian. I’m curious to see just what happens to the Syndicates. And I’m super curious about what Skill Sera has.

And as difficult as it will be to say goodbye to yet another series by author Rachel Vincent, I can’t make myself wait to read it. I am such a huge fan of this series and its characters. I love the fact that with each book I get a different view of the world, get to meet new characters and learn about their different abilities. And I love that with each book the overarching plot moves just a little bit farther forward.

The wait has been torturous. Especially with the author’s Facebook comments throughout the writing process. But I am so glad to finally get the chance to dive into this last installment in this amazing series.

    The Eternity Cure

    addtogoodreads

THE ETERNITY CURE by Julie Kagawa will be released in the U.S. on April 30, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin TEEN, the print edition is 448 pages.

THE ETERNITY CURE is the second book in author Julie Kagawa’s Blood of Eden series. No information is yet available about the third book in the series.

    Line_001

I may be a new fan of this series, but I am officially an obsessed fan. And I am so unbelievably excited for THE ETERNITY CURE’s release this week. Because that means that the next book in this series is that much closer to its release date.

I got the chance to read THE ETERNITY CURE just a little bit early thanks to the publisher and NetGalley and I thought it was totally amazing. (My Review.) I loved the first book in the series but this sequel was seriously epic. And now I am dying to continue the story and find out just what happens after that killer ending.

The world was even darker in this sequel. The threats were even more deadly. And the love story was way more heartbreaking.

While I won’t be re-reading this book on release day, I do plan on re-reading it. And I’m so thrilled that the finished copy will be downloading to my Kindle this week and that it will join THE IMMORTAL RULES as part of my permanent collection.

    Sweet Peril Cover

    addtogoodreads

SWEET PERIL by Wendy Higgins will be released in the U.S. on April 30, 2013 in paperback, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in print and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 384 pages.

SWEET PERIL is the second book in Wendy Higgins’ The Sweet Trilogy. The third book in the series, SWEET RECKONING, is slated for release in June 2014.

    Line_001

I cannot believe that the release date for SWEET PERIL is finally almost here. I held off reading the early review copy I had for as long as possible because I know just how torturous the wait is for the next book’s release.

Well I read it. And it’s all sorts of awesome. And I desperately want to re-read it right this minute. Or when my finished copy downloads to my Kindle on Monday Midnight. Because I am definitely not ready to disconnect from the story and leave the world. And I am absolutely not ready to begin suffering the agonizingly long wait for the final book in this series.

As I will be posting my review in the next couple of days and I already spotlighted SWEET PERIL for my Book Watch post a few weeks ago, I won’t go on and on here. But I will just quickly say that this book was every bit as exciting as the first book in the series. There was just as much heat… okay, there was a lot more…. The suspense was killer. And the chemistry sizzled.

Yes, I am still swooning over Kaidan Rowe.

    Life After Theft

    addtogoodreads

LIFE AFTER THEFT by Aprilynne Pike will be released in the U.S. on April 30, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 352 pages.

    Line_001

I am a huge fan of author Aprilynne Pike and when I heard about her standalone novel, LIFE AFTER THEFT, I just had to pre-order a copy. While I did receive an eARC for review, I didn’t get the chance to read it before release date, so I will be reading my finished copy instead.

But this book sounds like so much fun. I love modern retellings. And I am so very curious to see what the author did with The Scarlet Pimpernel in her novel.

I can’t wait to meet Jeff and Kimberlee and see just what her “unfinished business” is. And the fact that her haunting is dubbed snarky makes me that much more excited to read it.

While I won’t get the chance to add it to the pile this week or next, I will be reading it in May.

    The Program

    addtogoodreads

THE PROGRAM by Suzanne Young will be released in the U.S. on April 30, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Simon Pulse, the print edition is 416 pages.

THE PROGRAM is the first book in a new series of the same name by author Suzanne Young.

    Line_001
I cannot believe I almost forgot to pre-order THE PROGRAM for my Kindle. I’d heard about this series months ago when it was making the rounds on the blogs and I thought it sounded awesome. But as it wasn’t yet available to pre-order in electronic format I had to wait.

Fortunately I didn’t miss its release and I cannot wait for it to download this week.

I’m so totally curious about this book. Sloane’s world sounds chilling. And the fact that The Program wipes people’s memories makes that solution to the suicide epidemic seem even more horrific than the problem.

A life where feelings have to be buried does not sound appealing. And the fact that Sloane and James are both beginning to suffer from depression makes their future seem bleak. Especially if they do have to enter The Program.

I definitely want to check this book out this week. Even if I don’t get the chance to move it to the top of the pile I just have to take a peek. And I hope to be able to read it in June if I can’t manage to sneak it in sooner.

There are a ton of books releasing this week, but at the moment I only have five books pre-ordered. I am so very tempted to order OUR SONG as it sounds totally awesome. And I’m still really curious about THE WARD. But for now I’m trying to show a little restraint and not impulse buy books that I won’t immediately get the chance to read.

Fortunately, even with five books pre-ordered, I won’t be adding too many books to the TBR pile since I’ve already read SWEET PERIL and THE ETERNITY CURE and I will be reading OATH BOUND when it releases. But as next week promises just as many new releases, if not more, and I haven’t read any of the books I have pre-ordered, it’s a good thing my reading pile gets a little bit of a respite this week.

Many of the books “of note” that I’ve listed are ones I hadn’t heard very much about. But those Point Horror books have piqued my curiosity so I’ll definitely have to stalk a few reviews to see if they’re books I should have in my collection.

    Anyway…

I hope I haven’t missed any amazing titles releasing this week. And I hope that if you are a fan of Rachel Vincent’s Unbound series, you won’t have as tough a time saying goodbye as I know I will.

But if there are a few books I should have on my radar, feel free to let me know in the comments. I’m always up for learning about new “must read” and “must buy” books.

And I’d love to hear what books releasing this week are ones you just have to have.

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

    Book Watch: Sweet Peril

Sweet Peril CoverSWEET PERIL by Wendy Higgins will be released in the U.S. on April 30, 2013 in paperback, audio and eBook formats.

    ***

Choosing a book to watch for the week of April 30th has been absolutely impossible, because there are two amazing books releasing that week that I would love to put in the spotlight. But as I can only choose one, I had to wrestle with the decision for what seems like forever.

In the end, though, I decided to choose SWEET PERIL by Wendy Higgins as the book to watch over THE ETERNITY CURE. In part because I’ll be posting my review for that book next Tuesday and in part because I have known and loved Anna and Kaidan for just a little bit longer than Allison and Kanin.

And no, it doesn’t escape me that both character pairs share the same initials….

But I have loved this series since long before the first book’s release. I have suffered the agonizing wait for news of SWEET PERIL’s publication. I have endured the even longer wait since I read SWEET EVIL to get my hands on a copy of this sequel.

And I’ve chosen to torment myself even more by delaying my read until closer to release date so that the wait for the final book in the trilogy won’t be as torturous.

Wendy Higgins has created a story that is so wonderfully exciting. She took a fresh approach to the genre when developing her characters and building her world. And with an underlying darkness to her story, she has created a series that I absolutely love.

So I’ve been more than eager to return to it. To find out what will happen with Anna and Kai in this sequel. To learn whether Anna does “embrac[e] her dark side.” To see for myself whether something more develops between Anna and Kopano. And to discover just what the “steamiest of temptations” is that Anna and Kaidan must overcome.

The description asks whether love is worth risking one’s life and I say, “Yes! Yes, absolutely yes!” Though I am a little nervous about just whose life is at risk in SWEET PERIL….

And while it may not have been the easiest of decisions to make, I am so happy that I opted to put SWEET PERIL in the spotlight this week. Because it is the book I’m just dying to read. Because the characters are ones I am madly in love with… and have loved for such a long while. And because the wait for its release is one I’ve had to suffer the longest.

    My Reading Pile #103

It was not a busy week at the mailbox this week but it was so very incredibly awesome. Yes, that’s only one book in the picture below. And, yes, I already own a print copy of it. But I did not heretofore own a copy of it SIGNED by the author.

    My Reading Pile 103

[Credit for mailbox sharing goes to The Story Siren]

Thanks to the very amazing and generous and thoughtful Nancy of Tales of a Ravenous Reader, I have a copy of EASY by Tammara Webber. And it’s signed. To me! How awesome is that!

I could not believe she just offered to get a copy for me as we’d only recently become acquainted on Twitter. I am still very much wowed by her generosity. And I am still so excited about having this book in print. Signed. By Tammara Webber. Whose writing I’ve loved for quite some time. And whose incredibly kind words are one of the reasons I’m still blogging about books today.

    Anyway….

While I won’t be reading EASY this week – and I’ll actually never read this signed copy as it must remain pristine – because I still haven’t finished my WIP and I am trying to avoid reading any contemporary fiction until I do, I have a couple books I do plan on checking out this week.

    And they are….

Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.
    (March 3, 2013 – March 9, 2013)

    05

    Poison

First up on the pile is POISON by Bridget Zinn. I have been waiting ages and ages to read this book and I’m so glad I can finally add it to the pile this week. I was approved for an eBook version on NetGalley thanks to the awesome publisher, Disney Hyperion, but I also have a printed ARC thanks to Jaime of Two Chicks on Books. I might just have to read from both copies depending on which version I have on hand. Decisions… decisions.

I cannot wait to dive in. I actually started reading it on several occasions before guilt took over and I read those more timely books. But now I can enjoy POISON guilt-free. And I can finally learn more about Kyra and the kingdom she must save.

I will finally get to find out why her best friend is a “former” best friend, why her poison dart misses and whether she will be able to defeat the princess. And I will finally get to meet both Fred, “the charming adventurer” and this “too-cute” pig.

While I may not be one of those “teen girls” that the description says will swoon, if the heroine is “lovable” and “quick-witted” and there is a touch of romance… who knows… there might be a little swooning involved. And I can’t wait to find out if that will be the case this week.

Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a highly-skilled potions master, is the only one who knows her kingdom is on the verge of destruction—which means she’s the only one who can save it. Faced with no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom’s future ruler, who also happens to be her former best friend. But, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart . . . misses.

Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the king’s army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. At least she’s not alone. She’s armed with her vital potions, a too-cute pig, and Fred, the charming adventurer she can’t stop thinking about. Kyra is determined to get herself a second chance (at murder), but will she be able to find and defeat the princess before Hal and the army find her?

Kyra is not your typical murderer, and she’s certainly no damsel-in-distress—she’s the lovable and quick-witted hero of this romantic novel that has all the right ingredients to make teen girls swoon.

    SweetPeril

Next up on the pile is SWEET PERIL by Wendy Higgins. I received an early copy thanks to the amazing author and the totally awesome publisher, HarperTeen, for the tour I’ll be participating on in May. And while that’s not for a couple of months, there’s no way I could possibly wait to read this book.

There’s no way I could wait to find out what happens with Anna and Kaidan in this much-anticipated sequel. There’s no way I could resist the temptation to find out just what Anna must do to survive these “demon whisperers” the description mentions. And there is absolutely no way I could resist the lure of finding out what the “the steamiest of temptations” is that the description hints about teases with.

Even now, as I write this post, I’m so very desperate to just reach over and devour this book from cover to cover. SWEET PERIL, by title alone, is irresistible. The fact that this is a sequel I’ve been dying to read makes it all the more so. The fact that this book contains one of my most favorite fictional boys, Kaidan Rowe, puts it at the top of my most wanted to read lists.

And I’m so stoked that I get to read it this week.

    Wishful Thinking Reads:

There is a certain book releasing this week that I’m just dying to read. It’s a series-ending book. One with my favorite bad boy in YA.

If you haven’t guessed, that book is A TOUCH MENACING by Leah Clifford and that baddest of boys is Luke, a.k.a. Lucifer. And I am equally excited and terrified to read this final book from an author who likes to torment her readers almost as much as she does her characters.

I’m calling this a wishful thinking read, but I can’t image not reading this final book in the trilogy this week.

    Those Left Behind:

I don’t really know what happened last week. I think work completely mentally drained me. Well… that and moving my site to a new host. Oh and then there was all that design work on the blogs. But I think it was the umpteen hours moving my site to its new host, moving another site from Blogger to WordPress and the fact that work was INSANE last week that I had no energy to read or review.

And I had to write up notes for a beta read. So, yeah. Zero time to read.

Which means I have a LOT of catching up to do. And hopefully the ability to be coherent in the review I’m trying to write for PIVOT POINT, a book I love, love, loved.

Where last week I wasn’t behind, this week I’m so far behind I can barely breathe. And with all the books coming out this week… and this month… I’m more than overwhelmed.

So I will keep this short so that I can get to those three books I added to the pile last week before I tackle this new one. And hopefully I’ll be all caught up by next weekend and not allow myself to be enticed by any off-pile reads.

    NetGalley Pile Adds & Finds:

I did not have the chance to search through NetGalley this past week. But I did take a quick peek while creating this post so as to offer up at least a few books to share.

And while I didn’t request any, there are a few titles that have definitely caught my eye. And they are…

IN TOO DEEP by Coert Voorhees (Disney Book Group, Jul 9, 2013)

ANTHEM FOR JACKSON DAWES by Celia Bryce (Bloomsbury USA Children’s Books, Apr 30, 2013)

THE NEPTUNE PROJECT by Polly Holyoke (Disney Book Group, May 21, 2013)

ON LITTLE WINGS by Regina Sirois (Penguin Young Readers Group, August 15, 2013)

THE 5th WAVE by Rick Yancey (Penguin Books Australia, May 22, 2013) *ONLY for Australian bloggers*

I’ve heard so many people talking about THE 5th WAVE and so of course I’m hugely jealous of the Australian book bloggers who can request this title. As if I needed one more reason to want to move to Australia.

While I didn’t get the chance to tackle last week’s pile I’m ever hopeful I’ll be able to finish both last week’s and this week’s books to be read. I miss reading, but everything in my real life demanded that I not get lost in a book for a few hours. And as I have a ton of things to do this weekend, I don’t know how much reading I’ll get done before Monday.

But I do plan on finishing that review I’m behind on and writing a few more so that hopefully this week’s posts aren’t all tour stops, blasts – yes I’m helping out with the blast for MOONSET – and feature posts. Because even if writing reviews are a huge challenge, and they are often my least popular posts, I can’t call myself a book reviewer without them.

And as much as I’d love to dive into a book right now, I have some technology issues to deal with, and a few errands to run. But I hope to be able to start to attack the books on the pile later tonight.

I wish you all an amazing bookish week. And if you’d like to share links for your piles and/or book hauls, or a comment about what book you’re excited to read next, I’d love it!

    Happy reading!
