    The Immortal Circus Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway – Summer Court {Week NINE}

Wow, there are just two weeks left for THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS Blog Tour. The final episode was released last week and the full-length novel in print and electronic formats are now available. And starting next week the more traditional tour for the book will begin. So be sure to check that out.

As with most series, I’ve been hesitant to start the final episode in this serial novel. As desperate as I am to find those answers I’ve been looking for, I am not ready to say goodbye. Of course as my stop next week must include my review of that final episode, I won’t be able to delay the inevitable for much longer.

But for now, I’m pretending that I won’t have to say goodbye to Vivienne, Kingston, Lilith, Mab and the rest of the characters I’ve grown to adore… and fear.

    Anyway….

Once again King Oberon has paid me a visit. And it appears that he’s no longer willing to play nice. The gloves had already come off. But this time he’s made things personal. This time he’s taking the offensive. A position that I’m certain Mab will not be quite so willing to let him have for long.

I seriously hope that he knows just how hard Hannah of In the Best Worlds and I have worked to try and show our readers just how important it is to VOTE for the SUMMER COURT. With less than two weeks left until the “voting” ends, we cannot stress enough just how wrong it will be to allow the Winter Court to be victorious.

They’re the court that’s violated a long-standing treaty. They’re the court that is plotting against the Summer Fae. They’re the court that are protecting someone that shouldn’t be protected. And they’re the ones who launched an attack.

So please choose SUMMER for the win! Just because they have Kingston doesn’t mean they’re the good guys.

And if you’re looking to see just how Mab responds to Oberon’s declaration of war, be sure to check out The Bookish Brunette tomorrow. But just remember. Mab is not the innocent party here.

    Friends,

It has recently come to my attention that Queen Mab has violated an ages-old treaty between the Courts. I am not at liberty to divulge the exact details of this treaty, but I can state that this violation equates to an open declaration of war.

Rumours have been confirmed. Mab is hiding a girl she is calling Lilith. This girl is extremely dangerous; do not be deceived by her youthful nature. She has caused the deaths of more than you can imagine, and she will gladly do it again. Mab has something up her sleeve. Something more dangerous than I can begin to imagine. The worlds of Fey and human can no longer be considered safe, not so long as this girl remains under Mab’s care.

As such, this is your—yes you, the reader—last opportunity to pick the winning team. After this week, there will be no more civil discourse. And after next week, the Winter Court will not exist.

    Pick your side.
You don’t have any time left.
    -Oberon

Murdered contortionists aren’t exactly what Vivienne signed up for when she ran away to join the circus. But like most things under the big top, nothing is what it seems. With a past she can’t quite remember, Vivienne finds that running away forever might not be as appealing as it once sounded—especially not when she realizes the devilishly attractive ringleader Mab is the Faerie Queen of legend…and that she and the rest of the troupe are locked in an age-old rivalry between the otherworldly Courts.

Aided by her friends Kingston—a feisty stage magician whose magic is quickly stealing her heart—and his smart-ass assistant Melody, Vivienne finds herself racing against the clock to discover the culprit behind a series of deaths that should be impossible. However, the answer she seeks might reveal more about her own bloody past—and future—than she bargains for.

    The Immortal Circus Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway – Summer Court {Week SEVEN}

Well we’re definitely getting closer to finding out how THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS ends. Episode four (of five) released last week and all I can say right now… since it’s not my turn to review it… is that the author is such a tease. There are so many questions that I have to wait for the final episode to have answered. Talk about building up to a climatic conclusion. Episode five is going to be insane. In an amazing way, of course.

This is now the seventh (of ten) weeks of THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS Blog Tour and I really hope that Hannah of In the Best Worlds and I have managed to convince you to VOTE for the SUMMER COURT. Our reputations… and possibly our blogs… depend on it.

King Oberon is not someone I’d call forgiving. And he does control the publishing industry. So you see our predicament. We don’t want to be banished from reading – or receiving – the books we love. So, please consider casting your vote for SUMMER!

This week I have an extra special blog post from the author. It’s the first part of an interview he conducted with Annabel “Banana” Morgan of Clowns Without Borders South Africa, an organization that’s near and dear to his heart… and yes he may have used those words but I said the exact same thing.

There is a lovely note from Alex and – believe it or not – our dear King Oberon has been kind enough to make the introduction.

The second part of the interview will be revealed tomorrow at The Bookish Brunette, so be sure to stop by there to check it out. And even though that post is equally as awesome, I still highly recommend casting your vote for SUMMER!

    Greetings Mortals,

I have been in conference with Queen Mab, and we have decided to take a week off from our quarrel to invite Alex back to discuss something of great importance to both our Courts. Unheard of, I understand, especially so close to the end of our tour. But worry not! Next week we will be back to our competition.

    Sincerely,

    Oberon

    A Note from Alex…

    Hey guys,

As Oberon said, this week we’re doing things a little differently. Summer and Winter are pairing up to fully cover something rather near and dear to my heart: giving back.

When I first started writing, I made the promise to myself that I’d give a percentage of whatever I made from my books to some sort of charity. Preferably, a charity somewhat related to the book’s topic. But what charity relates to the circus?

Thankfully, this past summer I met with a girl working for an amazing orgnization that blends humanitarian outreach with circus arts. The group? Clowns Without Borders South Africa. There are many chapters all over the world, and when she shared what she did, I knew I wanted to help out.

So, today and tomorrow I’m sharing the interview I had with her. It’s definitely worth a read to learn more about this amazing foundation, and I highly recommend visiting their site and helping the cause. They make real change in the lives of the children and adults they work with, and all of their money goes directly to the dedicated performers/workers in the field.

I’m grateful to be able to support their cause. Because of your awesomeness, I was able to donate $500 to this group, and I plan on giving more as time moves forward. Keep an eye on my site (www.arkahler.com) to learn more about the various charities your support of my work is aiding. Let’s keep the good energy flowing!

    Best,

    Alex

Interview with Annabel “Banana” Morgan (Pt 1)

During my time with The Circus Village, I had the opportunity to get to know Annabel, an amazing girl from South Africa who works for a very special relief organization, Clowns Without Borders South Africa (CWBSA). One afternoon, she graciously sat down with me in the cafe tent and allowed me to interview her.

Alex: First off, thanks for talking with me about CWBSA. Could you briefly tell us about the organization and how you became involved?

Annabel: Gladly! CWBSA is a humanitarian organization dedicated to bringing emotional relief through laughter and play to communities in crisis in southern Africa. I was ‘clowning around’ in Swaziland when I heard about CWBSA and I thought it brought together everything that I love; the performance and healing aspects through creative expression, playing, and working with children. I came from a performance background, but it wasn’t enough to just perform onstage. CWBSA was my perfect job. It was very serendipitous; I mentioned to a colleague that I wanted to work with them and he said they were doing an audition the next day. I dropped everything and went—I knew this was the work I was destined to do. This was early 2010, I believe.

Alex: From your experiences, what are the effects CWBSA has on the local communities?

Annabel: It’s hard to measure the effects. You just feel it; when the clowns enter a community to do a show, there is an excitement in the village—it’s a time of celebration. We have to be really organized otherwise it becomes chaos; sometimes we perform for over 2k children. I think the best way to describe the effect it has is to just share a few stories.

There was one show we did in the eastern Cape last year, and there was a routine where we needed a volunteer. I picked an 8y/o boy, and during the routine he was one of those volunteers who really just made us look like clowns. It was fantastic. Afterward, the principal came to talk to us and he wanted to thank us, not only for relieving the stress of the teachers, but he said that the young boy was HIV positive and suffered from severe headaches. He’d been out of school the last two weeks and showed up just that day—when the principal asked the boy how he felt after the performance, the kid was all smiles and said he felt amazing.

Those are the kind of stories you hear. Apart from the obvious effect of crowds laughing and jumping off their seats, it’s those individual stories that make you realize you’re just dropping a stone in the water; the ripples are huge. So many of these places are torn apart by poverty or HIV and there is no relief—especially not emotionally. We’re sometimes the only time these people—kids and adults—have to laugh or play or just be happy together.

Sometimes we go back to communities and find out that our songs and skits have spread for kilometers in these rural areas—out there, people don’t have cars, they always walk. It shows our work is really reaching the community in big ways.

Obviously, that’s the performances. When we go back (for ten days in the Njabulo program) we can talk about how things are or are not changing. If they aren’t changing, we problem solve and open up to group discussions so the community can find solutions. For example, one of the most powerful things I’ve heard was a 54 y/old woman caregiver saying ‘ before you came, we thought it was our time to die. Now, we feel alive again.’

For a fantastic video of what they do, check this out:

Make sure to check out the rest of the interview over at The Bookish Brunette tomorrow!

Firstly, what a generous and amazing thing to be doing, Alex. The cause sounds so worthy and valuable! And what a beautiful story. Being able to bring joy to children alone would be a great gift, but to open up communication in the community to find solutions gives those citizens power over their lives. And that’s a truly special gift.

Thank you Alex and Annabel for sharing.

This interview continues over at The Bookish Brunette tomorrow, so be sure to head over there to check it out.

And if you’d like to learn more – or to donate – please visit Clowns Without Borders South Africa at www.cwbsa.org.

    The Immortal Circus Blog Tour: Review, Teaser + Giveaway – Summer Court {Week Six}

I never knew ten weeks could pass by so quickly! Okay, so we’re only in week six of THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS Blog Tour. But the previous five weeks absolutely flew by.

And with only five weeks left and only two episodes to go until we discover just how this book will end, what’s going on with Vivienne, what secret Mab is keeping from her about her past and which court will be the victor, it doesn’t seem like a lot of time.

Both Hannah of  In the Best Worlds and I have been fighting the good fight for our beloved Summer Court… but with what has been revealed so far in the guest posts, teasers and episodes, it’s not looking good.

    Especially not when….

Okay, okay, I won’t say a thing. It, I believe, is in my contract to remain silent. Anyway….

Today I’m sharing a short review and teaser of Episode Three. The final peek at this episode will be revealed tomorrow at The Bookish Brunette. Then you’ll have to wait until next week to get two more sneak peeks. But don’t forget to check out all the stops this week for more chances to win and to check out this week’s guest posts.

As always, my reviews are of the mini variety so that I don’t reveal too much or give away any spoilers. But with the way things ended… and with just what happened to…..

    Mini-review: Episode Three

As each week passes and more is uncovered about THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS, the more I wish I had the entire novel to devour. Because I know that this would be a book I’d sit down and read in one sitting if I had the opportunity.

But I don’t. And so, each week I have to wait to become immersed in this dark and strange and wonderful world. One that is described so beautifully by the author. With a main character who I’ve grown to adore, even if she is a complete mystery.

This week’s episode of THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS was a total tease on so many fronts. It revealed just a hint about Vivienne’s past, about her agreement with Mab and about who she might be. It was a bit more revealing about Kingston, however. But that reveal was even more of a tease.

In this episode, things are becoming rather dire for the Cirque des Immortels, a beloved character’s future is uncertain, and the mystery is deepening about just who, aside from their obvious enemy, is conspiring against them – and why. Even Mab may not be all too sure about who they are and why they are. Or if she is, she certainly isn’t telling.

Author A.R. Kahler really knows how to build suspense into each week’s short peek at his novel. With every episode, I find myself even more anxious for the next. And this week’s episode, which encompassed chapters eight through eleven, was no exception.

In fact, the cliffhanger ending this week had me desperately trying to flip to the next digital page, even when I knew there wasn’t another.

THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS is enchanting and enticing, dark and inviting. The author’s expert use of imagery makes his story leap off the page. His words create the most captivating and vivid pictures that excite the imagination. And while much of this story as yet remains a mystery, it is one that will keep readers coming back for more.

    Favorite passage

I actually had a favorite passage, but it was included in one of the teasers last week. Of course it wasn’t my only favorite passage… just my most favorite one. And yes, it was about Kingston.

Though there were actually nine other favorites that I noted… here’s just one.

The fire inside is flash and thunder and everything is roaring, roaring, the world ripping apart and filing itself back together. It’s nails on concrete fire in water trees on fire burning through suns and stars and emptiness circling the tunnel of falling, falling, falling into white. Then there’s someone’s words cutting through it all.

“I call upon line 23C. Forget.”

    The Teaser

A pair of tiny scissors appears in his hands. The blades glint in the candlelight. He reaches down into the basket and snips, pulling out a tiny square of cloth. It’s barely the size of a thumbnail.

“This,” he says, holding the square with the scissor blades like a tiny morsel, “would sell in the Night Market for a minor favor or a day’s worth of subjugation.” He holds it out. “But I’ll give you a taste for free.”

    “It’s a scrap of fabric.”

“Just touch it,” he says. I reach out. He drops the tiny blue square of cloth in my palm.

Lights explode across my vision and suddenly I’m no longer in the trailer; I’m soaring through the clouds, light shining from the heavens. My arms are stretched out to the sides and I’m giddy, laughing, bubbling with happiness. I swoop down, break cloud cover and smile at the brilliant green fields that stretch all the way to the horizon. I bank right, coast into a beam of soft sunlight—

    The Immortal Circus Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway – Summer Court {Week FIVE}

It’s hard to believe that we’re already in week five of THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS Blog Tour and that three of the book’s amazing episodes have been released. I’ve been fighting the urge to start reading Episode Three because I already know just how torturous the wait has been between each episode and how much more agonizing it will be as the story goes on.

I’ve also been warned of a killer cliffhanger. Which makes me even more nervous….

This is not my first serial experience. And with each installment the wait gets that much harder to bear. But that will be next week’s post. The one in which you will see just how much I loved the latest episode and how much I’m pining for the next. This week, I have a guest post to share as I continue to show my ever-loving support for King Oberon and the Summer Court along with Hannah of In the Best Worlds.

Oberon, Warlord extraordinaire, does a brilliant job of pleading his case and planting a seed of doubt in my mind about just how good a leader Mab really is. The workers at the Cirque du Soleil really do seem to be having fun and sharing the workload in the referenced video. And after witnessing just how tired Mab’s workers were after breaking down their Big Top in last week’s episode, I wonder if she does have any compassion at all.

Oh gosh, I really hope she doesn’t stop by to read my commentary. She will be visiting The Bookish Brunette tomorrow to rebut these claims that Oberon has made. If you want to hear her side of things be sure to check it out.

But before that, here’s what King Oberon has to say….

    Greetings mortals,

We now find ourselves in the middle of this tour. I hope by now your minds and hearts have been won over by the light of Summer. But if not, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve for the coming weeks. Be sure to comment and cast your vote! More than you know depends on the victor.

Today, I wanted to share yet one more reason why you should vote for Summer. In the Summer Court, we value safety and regulation. Ruling over wily fey requires a great deal of structure. And so, I thought it would be wise to share with you yet another reason why Mab is failing not only as a ringleader, but as a queen. It is but a small example, but one that I hope will help sway your heart. Below, you will find a video of her rival circus setting up their own big top. Please do watch it.

Do you see how well they work? They wear hard hats and work in unison, they listen to uplifting music. There are so many of them to help ease the burden of the job.

I know for a fact that within Mab’s troupe, she has only a dozen or so tent crew to manage raising and lowering the tent. And they do not wear hard hats.

Mab clearly places great physical stresses on her performers. They are endangered by the very work they choose to do. Why would you support such malpractice? It is akin to visiting a zoo where the creatures are kept in very small cages. It is cruelty to stare and support.

Let us end Mab’s reign for good. It starts with your vote.

    Sincerely,

    Oberon

OSHA Certified Warlord and Publishing Guru

    ***

You make a very compelling argument, Oberon. The workers do appear to love their jobs and I know for a fact, after reading last week’s episode, that things are a bit strained for Mab’s team. However, there are other factors that may be causing that strain.

Oh and no! I’m not implying that it’s our court that’s at fault or in any way involved with that. Really. I’m not. I meant nothing by that comment. At all.

    Please believe me. Please!

    *Ahem* So anyway….

Until next week…. I really hope there’s a next week for me… think TEAM SUMMER and hope that my insolence doesn’t cost me.

    The Immortal Circus Blog Tour: Review, Teaser + Giveaway – Summer Court {Week Four}

The holidays are almost over and I’m super thrilled to be kicking off week four of THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS Blog Tour. Once again Winter seems to be the favorite – Mab definitely has her charms – but that doesn’t mean they’re in the lead. It’s number of comments that count and it seems Summer is managing to hold its own.

Hannah of  In the Best Worlds, who will be once again sharing an AWESOME guest post on Wednesday, and I are doing our very best not to disappoint King Oberon. We really, really don’t want to feel his wrath.

As it is week four, my stop today is a short review of episode two along with a teaser of this week’s episode. For those of you who are waiting for the finished book to come out, you’ll have quite a few peeks into this amazing world by then!

The final peek at episode two is tomorrow at The Bookish Brunette where you can see just what she thinks of this next episode.

As these are just episodes, my reviews will be of the mini variety so as not to reveal too much. But I promise not to reveal any spoilers. Though I’d really, really love to talk about….

    Mini-review: Episode Two

The more I read of this story, the more in love with this book I am. And the more tormented I am when each episode ends. And while this episode doesn’t end on quite as much of a cliffhanger as the first episode did, reaching that last page and not being able to continue on is maddening.

Episode two teases readers with it’s beautifully written descriptions of the circus and its performers. It hints at the mystery that is Kingston. And it taunts us with the knowledge that there is more to Vivienne’s past than we – and even Vivienne – know.

Things are becoming even more dangerous for the performers. And we finally get a peek at the Summer Court. While I’d love to talk about just what happens with that, it is fairly spoiler-y. But let’s just say that secrets are being kept. Secrets that may prove deadly.

This second episode of THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS is every bit as captivating as that first episode. And it leaves readers with even more questions than before when it reaches its end at the conclusion of the seventh chapter.

The description wasn’t kidding when it said that not everything is as it seems. After seven chapters I’m left questioning everything and everyone.

The mystery has deepened, as has my suspicion. And with each turn of events and each new revelation, I’m left only with more questions. Questions about exactly what happened to Vivienne at the end of the first episode. Questions about just who… or what… Lilith is. Questions about Kingston, Melody and the Summer Court. And questions about just what Mab is really up to.

Questions I hope to find answers to in the coming episodes.

As agonizing as it is to have to wait for each new episode to download, much like the performers bound by contract to the circus, I am irrevocably connected to this amazing story and I’ll take any glimpse into the world that is offered, even if it is just a brief one.

Actually, I wouldn’t change a thing about the way I’ve been able to experience it. While the wait may be torturous, this dark and alluring tale is more than worth the wait.

    Favorite passage

There were a number of passages I considered favorites in this week’s episode. Sadly many of them were just as long as the teaser, if not longer, so I thought it best not to post them here.

I will just say that my most favorite was one involving Vivienne’s place within the circus. And my second involved Vivienne’s thoughts on Kingston.

The one I chose also involves Viv’s thoughts on Kingston. And although it is much, much shorter, it is one that makes me smile.

“What was that”? I ask when I reach him. He jumps slightly but doesn’t make a sound. When he sees it’s me, his fingers relax just a little. He really should wear a shirt backstage. His abs are distracting, even at the worst of times.

    The Teaser

I duck under the tent flap and enter a room filled with dim light and the scent of hay and oil smoke. The sounds of a viola are coming from a man in the corner, and it’s like I’ve been transported back a few dozen years to the heyday of sideshows. The inner tent walls glow orange in the lantern light and there, on a wooden platform, is a Shifter girl. Her hair is pink and done up in six-inch spikes, and the only thing she’s wearing is a black dog collar around her neck. Every square inch of her naked flesh—from neck to nipples to heels—is pierced. Rings, studs, even what look like nails and acupuncture needles, all sparkle in the lamplight as she weaves a small, slow dance on the platform. The tent it mostly speechless men, all watching her undulate like a slow-motion belly dancer. She catches my eye as I walk in and winks, then goes back to entrancing the crowd. The black cauldron at her feet is already brimming with bills and coins.

    Format: Kindle eBook

    The Immortal Circus Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway – Summer Court {Week Three}

It is that time again and I’m super thrilled to be able to kick off week three of THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS Blog Tour and to continue my support for the Summer Court with In the Best Worlds.

Queen Mab seems to be stealing the show so far. But her reign cannot last for the entire tour, can it? Just because she is alluring and seemingly all-powerful does not mean she is the only one.

Just check out this interview between King Oberon and author Alex Kahler and you’ll learn just how intimidating he can be. Oberon that is. Alex? Well… he was dismissed from the interview and kicked off the tour. He holds no power in the Summer Court. He’s only the author, after all.

Be sure to visit The Bookish Brunette tomorrow to hear from Mab and “meet” Penelope. And while they suggest that you should “vote wisely” that does not mean you have to choose Winter. The SUMMER COURT is where it’s at.

    Mortal friends,

I do hope you have forgiven me for last week’s transgression. I only stole Vivienne’s mp3 player for you. Do you see the lengths I would go to in order to gain your vote and trust? All in the hopes that together we can overthrow Mab’s reign of lascivious terror.

As I have mentioned earlier, my Court holds the reins to a large chunk of the publishing industry. This week, I have invited Alex to briefly speak with you about the process of writing The Immortal Circus in serial format.

Oberon: Welcome, Alex, why did you decide that this book would work well as a serial?

Alex: Well, actually, it was my editor, David Pomerico, who thought it might work well—

Oberon: I didn’t ask about your editor. I asked about you.

Alex: Yes. Of course. I, um.

Oberon: You are stuttering. I hear that is a human response to feeling intimidated. Do I intimidate you?

Alex: No? Yes? Do you want me to be? I thought I was here to talk about the book.

Oberon: You are. And yet you haven’t spoken about it yet.

Alex: I’m trying. I chose to write the book as a serial because the idea had always been very visual in my head, sort of like watching a movie.

Oberon: I have heard of this movie technology.

Alex: Of course you have. It’s very modern. Anyway, the idea of breaking the story arc into episodes just kind of naturally fell into place. It was like the story wanted to be several smaller bits, and the idea that I could end an episode on a cliffhanger and make the reader wait two weeks to find out what happened next was incredibly appealing.

Oberon: That is grotesque. You mean you intentionally toyed with your readers’ emotions?

Alex: Isn’t that what writing is about?

Oberon: Only if you are as evil as Mab.

    Alex: I don’t think…

Oberon: Silence, mortal. I will hear no more of your treachery. You clearly only wrote this as a serial so as to play with the hearts of readers everywhere. And as such, I am ending this interview. Good day.

(Author’s note: I never expected to get kicked off my own tour. But I’m going to stay silent for a while. Oberon brought his broadsword to the meeting. -ARK)

    ***

Well, I have to side with Oberon just a little bit on this one. While his abrupt end to the interview may have been a tad startling, it wasn’t wholly unjustified. You DID toy with your readers’ emotions by releasing this as a serial, Alex.

I know I had been anxiously awaiting episode two, and then tried to wait even longer before starting that episode just so that I didn’t have to wait quite as long for the next installment. So, yes, you DID “play with the hearts” of your readers. Mine very much included.

And, I’m sensing just a little “Team Mab” side to your personality. Hmmm…. Maybe I do need to work with Oberon to strategize just how we can get you to our court.

    Until next week….

    The Immortal Circus Blog Tour: Review, Teaser + Giveaway – Summer Court {Week Two}

I am so excited to kick off the second week of the blog tour for THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS and continue to do my very best to represent the Summer Court along with In the Best Worlds, who will be sharing an AWESOME guest post on Wednesday.

For today’s stop I am here to share a short review of the first episode and a nice long teaser which really gives an awesome peek at just one of the performances this immortal circus puts on. Of course, for a look at one of the other “shows” you’ll have to check out the Winter Court’s stop tomorrow at The Bookish Brunette.

And while I’m not here to convince you to choose Winter Court, by any means, I will say that Mab puts on quite the show.

    Mini-review: Episode One

I was immediately drawn into THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS. Any story that starts off with a murder and a mystery and paints the canvas so beautifully and vividly is one that captivates me.

With only three chapters in this first episode, readers get just a short peek into the world. But what a peek it is. It invites them to meet Vivienne Warfield and get a taste of just what life is like for a new addition to the troupe. It hints that there are secrets about Vivienne that are yet to be discovered.

It brings readers into a world that is dark, deadly and seductive. It introduces them to the ringleader, Mab, who is both frightening and incredibly alluring. And it gives them a taste of just what the real draw is to this show.

A little bit dark, a whole lot intriguing and so utterly enticing, this first episode has made me more than eager for more. With a noirish feel to the writing, an almost timeless feel to the setting and a wonderfully sexy edge, if the rest of this story continues in the same vein as this first episode, I will be desperately awaiting each installment.

    Favorite passage

I have a favorite passage, but as it is one that will only help sway readers to the Winter Court, I couldn’t possibly reveal it here. I am, after all, afraid of Oberon and wouldn’t want to invite his wrath.

So I thought I’d include one that showcases the author’s brilliant way with words but doesn’t reveal too much. And it doesn’t put me at risk… at least I hope it doesn’t….

The long gash across her throat is a second smile leaking its secrets into the ring.

    The Teaser

The music changes. Organ music shifts to heavy downbeats, bass floods the tent, and then the five-piece band kicks in with swinging violins and saxophones. On cue, the troupe floods into the ring in a swarm of beautiful chaos. Twin aerialists drop from the air, wrapped in sheets of burgundy fabric, as the acrobats burst from the back curtain, tumbling and leaping over each other in an intricate dance. Jugglers flip over the ring curb and toss their flaming knives across the full space of the ring, creating an arc of fire and steel that illuminates the contortionists twisting themselves on arms and elbows. I look over just in time to see Kingston and Melody whirl onstage like salsa dancers, their feet stepping a quick rhythm perfectly synced to the throb of techno. The moment they spin apart, Kingston raises his wand and shoots a shower of vivid purple sparks. Melody does a perfect aerial through it, landing in a split that makes the crowd roar with applause. More performers crowd into the ring. A pair of women do a one-arm balance on the heads of their burly bases. Men and women in leather and velvet wield flaming staffs and poi, swirling the fire in arcs that sear ghostly traces in my vision. More aerialists drop from the ceiling, this time dangling and stretching from hoops and a spinning trapeze. My hands already hurt from clapping so hard. In these fantastic moments, it’s easy to forget that just this morning, one of our members was murdered right where the handbalancers are standing now….
