    The Guest Post

Most Challenging Scene to Write in UNDER HIS SKIN

    by Stacey O’Neale

The most challenging scene to write was when Kaden revealed his true identity to Annabelle. I wrote the beginning of the scene from his perspective, and the end in hers. I wanted the readers to see the situation from both sides. And there were a riot of emotions happening all at once.

From Kaden’s perspective, he had lied to her to protect her. He had no idea what the government would do if she discovered his secret. But, at the same time, he hated lying to her. It was a constant, painful struggle for him. And once he realized he had feelings for her, the agony over his deceit intensified.

From Annabelle’s perspective, she was dumbfounded. There’s just no way to prepare for what Kaden told her. But that wasn’t her only issue. Her best friend wasn’t the person she thought he was. And there’s a part of her that hurts because he never trusted her enough to tell her the truth.

With all of that going on, it gave me a lot to consider. I probably wrote and rewrote that one scene five or six times before I was happy with it.

MORTAL ENCHANTMENT Blog Tour: Interview with Stacey O’Neale + Giveaway

    Mortal Enchantment Blog Tour Button

I am thrilled to welcome Author Stacey O’Neale to the blog today for an interview as part of the MORTAL ENCHANTMENT Blog Tour. I think it’s amazing that she juggles all that she does. And although she answered this question, I still don’t know where she finds the time and energy.

MORTAL ENCHANTMENT is the first full-length book in a series of the same name, which released this month. But if you’d like to take a peek at the prequel novella before diving into this book, it’s currently available in eBook format at Amazon and Barnes & Noble for free. Just scroll down to THE SHADOW PRINCE for links.

As I asked quite a few questions about the author, her writing, her characters and her series, and snuck in a few “Quickie Qs,” I’m going to try and keep this introduction brief.

But if you like books that blend magic and myth, action, adventure and romance, then you’ll definitely want to check this series out. And I’ve included some information about each of the books in the series a little bit further down in this post so you can do just that.

If you’d like to “meet” the author, her details and places to find her online are also below. And, as part of this tour, the author is giving away a super awesome bookish gift card. Just follow the instructions in the Rafflecopter for a chance to win.

Before all of that, however, is the interview, in which I ask the author all sorts of questions.

    The Interview

    Q. You are a blogger, a publicist and now a writer. How are you able to juggle everything? And were there any sacrifices you’ve had to make in order to incorporate writing into your day?

I wasn’t able to juggle everything. I was spending all my time as Jennifer L. Armentrout’s publicist and had little time for any writing. I ended up having to leave her to pursue my writing career. The blog is easier to keep up with because I never stopped reading books. I also have several other reviewers who always manage to pick up the slack.

    Q. While still early in your writing career, what has been your favorite moment as a writer?

Every single time I talk to someone who’s read my book. It’s so awesome.

    Q. What inspired you to write the Mortal Enchantment series?

I was researching faeries when I kept coming across the word elemental. I Googled the name and happened to stumble upon the sixteenth century works of an alchemist named Paracelsus. He identified the four types of elementals, even giving them names. My brain started spinning with ideas, and eventually, the characters came to life.

    Q. If you had to describe MORTAL ENCHANTMENT in 15 words or less, what would they be?

Romance, Adventure, Mystery, Betrayal, Magic, Fear, Strength, Passion, Overcoming Obstacles, Swoony Boys, Snarky Girls, and Fun. ☺

    Q. Which of the characters has been your favorite to write about in the series? And why?

Rowan has probably been the most fun thus far because I’ve gotten to know him so well. I’ve spent so much time in his head between THE SHADOW PRINCE and MORTAL ENCHANTMENT. Also, half of FRAGILE REIGN (Mortal Enchantment #2) is told in his point of view.

    Q. Which elemental court would you like to belong to, if you could choose? And why? What is your least favorite element (and why)?

I really like air because you get to control the weather. The whole idea of it reminds me of Storm from the X-Men. She’s always been one of my favorite comic book characters. The least favorite element is probably fire because I think it’s the least interesting in terms of what you can do with it.

    Q. What was your favorite scene to write about in MORTAL ENCHANTMENT? Your most challenging scene?

Chapter Twenty was my favorite chapter to write. I had that scene in my head even before I knew how the book would end. I don’t want to say much more about it because I don’t want to ruin it for anyone.

The most challenging scene to write was Chapter Two because there was so much going on at once. A lot of what happened there set the tone for the major conflicts in the book. I spent a considerable amount of time writing and rewriting that chapter.

    Q. Do you have a favorite quote from MORTAL ENCHANTMENT? If so, could you share it, and why it’s a favorite?

‟Enjoying the view?” he said, eyes suddenly on me. His chiseled face wore an overly confident grin. Clearly, he was used to being admired.

    My cheeks burned.

I stood, pretending to check out the scenery. ‟Not much to see.”

    ***

I love the banter between these two. Sometimes I would bust out laughing as I wrote their scenes. They are both so fun. Plus, I like that she keeps him on his toes.

    Q. For your debut, had you always planned on writing a series? Do you find it to be more challenging than you’d thought?

I guess it was at first, but this is actually the fifth book I’ve written. I prefer to write a series because it gives me more time to develop relationships with each character and really explore who they are.

    Q. What makes MORTAL ENCHANTMENT stand out in its genre?

I think it stands out because it’s a blending of genres. There are the obvious paranormal elements, but it’s also got plenty of mystery, adventure, and romance. Some have even called it a high fantasy so I’d say that makes it pretty different.

    Quickie Questions

    Q. Are you a plotter or a pantster?

A little of both. I write a 3-4 sentence summary for each chapter before I start each novel, but I tend to discover new things as I write.

    Q. Write at night or during the day?

Always during the day while my daughter is at school. I only write at night when I’m behind and I have a deadline.

    Q. Standalone or series?

    Series.

    Q. Happily ever after or happily never after?

    HEA. I’m a mush. 😉

    Q. Hero or villain?

    Hero.

THE SHADOW PRINCE Blog Tour: ‘The Elemental Courts’ Guest Post + Giveaway

    TheShadowPrinceBT

I am excited to be one of the stops today on Stacey O’Neale’s THE SHADOW PRINCE Blog Tour with a post about the elemental courts in her Mortal Enchantment series. I have always been fascinated by abilities that are drawn from the elements and I can’t wait to learn more about each of these four courts as the series progresses.

If you haven’t yet had the chance to meet Rowan or taken a peek at what goes on in the fire court, THE SHADOW PRINCE is available in eBook format to download for free. But if you’d like to know just a little bit more first, you can check out the novella’s description which follows below the book’s awesome cover.

And if you’d like to know more about each of the four courts, be sure to see what Stacey O’Neale has to say in her guest post, which follows immediately below this introduction. The courts I am most curious about are the fire court and the water court. But I think I’m most intrigued by the water court. Telepathic and psychic abilities, secretive natures and power over the water make them pretty awesome. But that’s just what I think….

Which court sounds like it might be your favorite?

This tour includes a wicked cool giveaway for an eReader and signed copies of the book. Just scroll down to the Rafflecopter for details and a chance to win. The giveaway is international.

But before all that, let me turn the blog over to the author, Stacey O’Neale, so you can learn a little bit more about the elemental courts.

    The Guest Post

    The Elemental Courts

    by Stacey O’Neale

There are four elemental courts: Woodland (Earth), Fire, Air, and Water.

The woodland is the fey court, meaning all the variations of faeries belong here. Their power comes from anything on land like forests, jungles, and even the ground we stand on. They are quite charming and playful, but don’t be fooled. The fey are well-known for their skills on the battlefield. They also provide all the weapons for each of the courts.

The fire court has many different types of creatures like gabriel hounds, ogres, and goblins. They draw their power from anything that can produce heat like fire, volcanoes, and our planet’s core. Fire elementals are very passionate and fiercely loyal which sometimes gets them in trouble. Their powers are tied to their emotions.

The air court is the least diverse when it comes to creatures. They are mostly different variations of elves because they rarely mate outside of their own court. Their power comes from the skies. They can control the weather and manipulate the air around them. They are what I consider the thinkers and historians of the bunch. Their lifestyle is very simplistic and they tend to keep to themselves.

The water court is made up of water creatures like mermaids, sirens, and sprites. As you’ve probably guessed, they control anything having to do with water. They can summon the water without being in it, but they are much more powerful when they are within it. Out of all the courts, they are the most secretive. They speak to one another telepathically and their queen is known for her psychic abilities.

SOUL SCREAMERS VOLUME FOUR by Rachel Vincent releases in the U.S. today, March 25, 2014 in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin Teen the print edition is 576 pages.

SOUL SCREAMERS VOLUME FOUR is the final collection in Author Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers series and includes the stories WITH ALL MY SOUL, FEARLESS, NIEDERWALD and LAST REQUEST.

    divider2

I was so excited when the eBook version of SOUL SCREAMERS VOLUME FOUR downloaded to my Kindle today. Although I know just as soon as the print copy arrives I’ll probably be a little sad to officially be saying goodbye.

As I’ve rambled about this final volume in the series quite a bit already and as it was my Book Watch post the other week, I won’t ramble on too much now. But I can’t wait until everyone gets to read LAST REQUEST to see if they love it as much as I do. And I’m curious to know whether everyone will end up re-reading the final book in the series once they’ve devoured LAST REQUEST.

It’s hard to believe that after all these years I’m going to have to officially say goodbye to Kaylee, Tod, Nash, Sabine and Emma. Though I still am holding out hope for a someday maybe short about either Avari or Ira which has cameos with those not belonging to the Netherworld.

    Description…

Saving the world has never come easy— and Kaylee Cavanaugh’s died to prove it…

The final collection of New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers series is packed with emotion, with intrigue, with secrets,  with family—and above all, with love.

Don’t miss  WITH ALL MY SOUL, FEARLESS, NIEDERWALD and a brand-new novella, LAST REQUEST.

    Wanderers

WANDERERS by Susan Kim and Laurence Klavan releases in the U.S. today, March 25, 2014, in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 368 pages.

WANDERERS is the second book in the Wasteland series. No information is yet available on the third book in the trilogy.

    divider2

I am a little bit behind on this series. I started reading WASTELAND when I first got my hands on a copy but wasn’t able to get the chance to read more than the first few pages due to other reading commitments. But now that I have WANDERERS, the second installment in this series, I’m anxious to get caught up.

As I haven’t read the first book and haven’t yet gotten the chance to learn about the Variants, to visit Prin and to meet Esther and Caleb, I refuse to take a peek at the description for this sequel. So I don’t know whether they’re winning the battle for Prin’s freedom. I don’t know what the secrets are and whose shady pasts are revealed. And I don’t want any of that spoiled by reading book two’s description.

So while I have this sequel residing on my Kindle today, it will be at least a few more weeks before I can dive into both books in this series. But as this series sounds awesome and the few pages I did read of WASTELAND piqued my interest, I just had to pre-order WANDERERS and am stoked that I have two books in the series that I can read back-to-back (hopefully) in April.

    Description…

The Emmy Award-nominee and Edgar Award-winning duo bring readers back to the Wasteland in this thrilling sequel.

Karin Slaughter, bestselling author of Criminal, called Wasteland, “A Lord of the Flies for future generations. An irresistible page-turner.”

The former citizens of Prin are running out of time. The Source has been destroyed, so food is scarcer than ever. Tensions are rising…and then an earthquake hits.

So Esther and Caleb hit the road, leading a ragtag caravan. Their destination? A mythical city where they hope to find food and shelter – not to mention a way to make it past age nineteen.

On the way, alliances and romances blossom and fracture. Esther must rally to take charge with the help of a blind guide, Aras. He seems unbelievably cruel, but not everything is as it seems in the Wasteland.…

In this sequel to Wasteland, the stakes are even higher for Esther, Caleb, and the rest of their clan. They’re pinning all their hopes on the road…but what if it’s the most dangerous place of all?

Caitlin Clarke has lived a quietly conformist life in New York City – until, with the collapse of her parents’ marriage, she’s sent across the Atlantic for a strict English boarding school education. As soon as she arrives at Temperley, she learns that the only important rules are the unwritten ones. The upper echelons of her new society are marked not by neat dresses and Kate Middleton hair, but by skinny jeans, cigarettes and scars.  It’s a world of the beautiful and the dangerous, and acceptance means staying on the right side of the most beautiful and dangerous of them all.

As Caitlin’s popularity grows, she discovers that not everyone is happy under Stella’s rule – that it might finally be time for a new order among the Stars and the civilians. Fighting the system, however, means Caitlin must tread the same dark path as Stella, where absolute power and absolute destruction are only a breath away . . .

Adam is a bully with a major chip on his shoulder.

Mark is outgrowing his old friends but doesn’t know how to make new ones.

In a few short hours, none of this will matter. Without warning, a horrifying infection will spread across the school grounds, and a group of students with little in common will find themselves barricaded in a classroom, fighting for their lives. Some will live. Some will die. And then it will get even worse.

Fast-paced and frightening, Silver is a tale set on the fringes of science and horror – a story about the struggle to survive in the face of impossible odds.

Cracks in the KingdomCRACKS IN THE KINGDOM (The Colors of Madeleine #2) by Jaclyn Moriarty

    Pub. Date: March 25, 2014

    Publisher: Arthur A. Levine Books

Find it: AMAZON BARNES & NOBLE

    Description:

The second in Jaclyn Moriarty’s brilliant, acclaimed fantasy trilogy, THE COLORS OF MADELEINE!

Princess Ko’s been bluffing about the mysterious absence of her father, desperately trying to keep the government running on her own. But if she can’t get him back in a matter of weeks, the consequence may be a devastating war. So under the guise of a publicity stunt she gathers a group of teens — each with a special ability — from across the kingdom to crack the unsolvable case of the missing royals of Cello.

Chief among these is farm-boy heartthrob Elliot Baranski, more determined than ever to find his own father. And with the royal family trapped in the World with no memory of their former lives, Elliot’s value to the Alliance is clear: He’s the only one with a connection to the World, through his forbidden communications with Madeleine.

Through notes, letters, and late nights, Elliot and Madeleine must find a way to travel across worlds and bring missing loved ones home. The stakes are high, and the writing by turns hilarious and suspenseful, as only Jaclyn Moriarty can be.

I’m happy for another quiet week for releases. But I’ve looked at what’s coming in the next couple of weeks and it’s insane. So it’s just a short reprieve. And last week I missed the release for STARLING by Fiona Paul, so was totally happily surprised when that final book in the series downloaded on Thursday.

I am a little teary-eyed about SSV4’s release, knowing that this is really THE END. But at the same time it just means that I can look ahead to more of the awesome that is Author Rachel Vincent’s writing and get to love her new characters, some of whom I already met.

Anyway… I know I’m just a little bit late with this post – I’d planned on posting it yesterday, but the day kind of got away from me – but I figured it’s not too late to wish all these books (and authors) a happy book birthday and share my excitement for these just released titles.

And while I only have the two novels pre-ordered and living on my Kindle, I am very much interested in NEARLY GONE and SILVER, so I might be adding those two books to my collection before the day is through. We shall see….

As always, happy bookish acquiring and to those with a book releasing…

    Happy release week!

Cover Reveal: The Shadow Prince + Giveaway

    The Shadow Prince

    Coming March 25, 2014

    add_purple

I am super excited to be participating in today’s cover reveal for Stacey O’Neale’s THE SHADOW PRINCE which is releasing next month. I was given the chance to take a peek at the cover before its reveal and I thought it was awesome.

I love that the image, the background and the font are all in a similar tone. They blend together very well but yet the title doesn’t disappear against the background due to the bright, almost metallic highlights and the darkness in the background which makes the text really pop and also adds some weight.

I love that the background is indistinct, but not so shadowed and blurred to make it unrecognizable as a landscape. The softness gives the cover a magical, ethereal quality and it contrasts nicely with the hard planes of the male model’s body.

The scratches and markings on the model’s back make me curious about how he received them and whether they are a result of the consequences the tagline speaks of.

I also think the title, series and author fonts work really well together. I think the title font is perfect for not only this book’s title but the story itself.

I might have preferred different fonts for the tagline, especially as the word “consequences” in its current font appears just slightly smaller than the rest of the words, and, to me, consequences seem like things that might hold more weight. But it doesn’t detract from the overall appeal of this cover.

It’s a really striking cover and one that would absolutely make me take a look at the book’s description.

    Anyway… that’s what I think.

    What do you think?

Kill Kalin, the half-human, half-elemental daughter of the air court king.

Willing to do anything to remove his mother from power, he agrees to sacrifice the halfling. He returns to the mortal world with his best friend, Marcus, determined to kill the princess.
