Blog Tour Review: STAR-TOUCHED STORIES by Roshani Chokshi

Welcome to my stop on the STAR-TOUCHED STORIES Blog Tour!

There aren’t many short story compilations that I would say are must reads, but STAR-TOUCHED STORIES is an absolute must. Not just because it includes the novella, Death and Night. Or because all three stories together expand on the world, give a longer look at the characters you already know and love, give a more complete picture of their lives. But because the writing is every bit as amazing. It lets you get lost in the worlds the author created. It will make you smile and will bring you to tears. It is absolutely magical.

STAR-TOUCHED STORIES releases today in print, audio and electronic formats. So if you haven’t pre-ordered your copy, you can grab your copy at your favorite retailer or e-tailer.

And if you’d like to know more about what I thought, my review is below.

    Death and Night

He was Lord of Death, cursed never to love. She was Night incarnate, destined to stay alone. After a chance meeting, they wonder if, perhaps, they could be meant for more. But danger crouches in their paths, and the choices they make will set them on a journey that will span lifetimes.

    Poison and Gold

Now that her wish for a choice has come true, Aasha struggles to control her powers. But when an opportunity to help Gauri and Vikram’s new reign presents itself, she will have to battle her insecurities and maybe, along the way, find love.

    Rose and Sword

There is a tale whispered in the dark of the Empire of Bharat-Jain. A tale of a bride who loses her bridegroom on the eve of her wedding. But is it a tale or a truth?

As the excitement builds for Chokshi’s next series THE GILDED WOLVES (February 2019), this collection will satisfy the cravings for her gorgeous prose and fans can catch up with their favorite characters. Even if dipping into the Star- Touched universe for the first time, STAR-TOUCHED STORIES will draw you in and leaving for more.

Note: This review is based on an eARC received from the publisher in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book. A Kindle eCopy was purchased for my collection.

    The Review

Roshani Chokshi’s writing is beauty and poetry and romance. It conveys strength and bravery and sorrow and truth and love. STAR-TOUCHED STORIES is every bit as magical and imaginative and gorgeous as the author’s full-length novels, with each story connecting to the other and telling a tale that while shorter than a novel feels every bit as complete and satisfying and enchanting.

Each story can be read independently of one another, in any order, whether THE STAR-TOUCHED QUEEN or A CROWN OF WISHES has been read or not. However, reading these stories following a read of the novels will allow for a better understanding of the characters and a better connection with them. And reading them in order will save the most anticipated and surprising and emotional story for the very end.

Death and Night tells of how and why the two met and how their story began. It promises humor, romance, witty dialogue, the possibility of heartbreak, and the hope for a happy ending. It is instantly captivating, shares the viewpoints of both characters, returns readers to a world that is interesting and alluring, and reminds them just how extraordinary a writer the author is.

Poison and Gold invites readers to get to know a bit more about Aasha – her fears, her struggle with her new identity, her wants and wishes. It’s a story of discovering oneself and of acceptance of who they are, and offers a touch of romance and a deadly test to keep things exciting.

Rose and Sword is a tale of the possibility of a lifetime of love lost before it ever had the chance to truly begin. It is a story of choices and bravery and love and loss. It is beautiful and bittersweet and heartbreaking and beguiling. It promises a quest, beloved as well as unexpected characters, a peek into their future, and answers to the questions of what happens next. It is thoughtful and stunning and the perfect end to the compilation.

For those readers who just can’t get enough of Roshani Chokshi’s insanely breathtaking writing, STAR-TOUCHED STORIES delivers this in spades. Each story is an adventure. Each story allows readers to become fully immersed. Each story will remind readers why they fell in love with the characters, the world, the writing in the first place.

I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of the blog tour for THE INEVITABLE COLLISION OF BIRDIE & BASH by Candace Ganger. It may have been a book that made me want to read it based on title alone. But it was an incredible and completely unexpected read in all the best ways and it completely blew me away.

If you’d like to know what I thought about this amazing story, my review follows below. But on a personal note I have to admit that I may have sobbed my way through much of the book but was left smiling at the story’s end.

Sebastian Alvaréz is just trying to hold the pieces together, to not flunk out, to keep his sort-of-best friend Wild Kyle from doing something really bad. And to see his beloved Ma through chemo. But when he meets Birdie Paxton, a near-Valedictorian who doesn’t realize she’s smoking hot in her science pun T-shirt, at a party, an undeniable attraction sparks. And suddenly he’s not worried about anything.

But before they are able to exchange numbers, they are pulled apart. A horrifying tragedy links Birdie and Bash together – yet neither knows it. When they finally reconnect, and are starting to fall – hard – the events of the tragedy unfold, changing both their lives in ways they can never undo.

Told in alternating perspectives full of the best nerdy banter this side of Ohio, some seriously awesome skate moves, and the promise of a kiss destined to make the world stop turning, The Inevitable Collision of Birdie & Bash will break your heart and put it back together again.

NOTE: This review is based on an eARC received by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book. A Kindle eCopy was purchased for my collection.

    The Review

From its title, THE INEVITABLE COLLISION OF BIRDIE & BASH may lead one to believe it’s a lighthearted story about two young people who are destined to meet. Perhaps in some chaotic or bizarrely funny way. But while destiny and chaos may play a part in this story, the events that bring Birdie and Bash together are anything but light or fun.

Theirs is a story that is devastatingly heartbreaking, incredibly moving, achingly hopeful. Their lives are consumed by pain, tragedy and loss. But their connection is more than one based on shared sorrow. And their love story, while bittersweet, cannot be called tragic.

If Birdie hadn’t been so upset about the news she received about her scholarship, she never would have gone to the party. She never would have met Bash that night. She never would have felt the need to try and confess to her mother, setting in motion the events that led to the worst thing to ever happen to her family.

If Bash had listened to his mother, he never would have stayed friends with Kyle. He never would have been at the party where he met Couch Girl, a.k.a. Birdie. He never would have witnessed Kyle doing the stupidest thing in his life, setting in motion the events that led to Bash making the worst mistake of his.

If either had done just one thing differently, it might have been enough to alter both outcomes. So many things had to come together just right for them to meet, for their lives to become inextricably interwoven, and for their worlds to be forever changed.

Candace Ganger created a story about love and family and friendship that is unexpected and beautiful and heartrending. She introduces two characters who are interesting, kind, strong, sympathetic, and immensely likable. And she challenges them to find their way through their anguish and to each other.

Told in alternating points of view, THE INEVITABLE COLLISION OF BIRDIE & BASH promises to put readers and characters alike through an emotional wringer. It invites them to question destiny, fate, and scientific theory. It is sad but not dark. It is sweet but not saccharine. It is gorgeous and intense and absolutely unforgettable.

In this charming and exciting women’s fiction novel, Giovanna Fletcher explores the complicated relationship between three friends—Maddy, her fiancé Rob, and their best friend Ben.

Maddy, dressed in white, stands at the back of the church. At the end of the aisle is Rob—the man she’s about to marry. Next to Rob is Ben—best man and the best friend anyone could ever have. And that’s the problem. Because if it wasn’t Rob waiting for her at the altar, there’s a strong chance it would be Ben. Loyal and sensitive, Ben has always kept his feelings to himself, but if he told Maddy she was making a mistake, would she listen? And would he be right?

Best friends since childhood, Maddy, Ben, and Rob thought their bond was unbreakable. But love changes everything. Maddy has a choice to make, but will she choose wisely? Her heart, and the hearts of the two best men she knows, depend on it… Romantic, suspenseful, and a whole lot of fun, You’re the One That I Want is a great read about friendship, love, and the decisions that we make.

NOTE: This review is based on an eARC received by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book. A finished copy was provided to me. A Kindle eCopy was purchased for my collection.

    The Review

YOU’RE THE ONE THAT I WANT is a moving, romantic, wistful story of friendship, love, broken hearts, and a path not taken. It begins with a walk down the aisle, and goes back in time to reveal the beginnings of a childhood friendship between Maddy, Ben, and Robert, advancing through their lives to the present.

Told only from the points of view of Maddy and Ben, they share how the three met, how their friendship grew, how it changed, and how the changes affected the threesome. Their story is a love story – joyful and sad, sweet and bittersweet. It is filled with moments that are, moments that could be, and moments that aren’t to be.

The instant that Robert and Ben met Maddy, they adored her. And she adored them. Soon they were inseparable. The best of friends. Nothing could tear them apart. Not their changing interests. Not whomever they were dating. Not even Ben’s growing feelings toward Maddy.

But when a trip to Paris with their art class ends in ways that none of them expected, leaving one of them heartbroken, keeping their friendship from falling apart won’t be easy. Especially with hidden feelings, bad timing, a colossal mistake, a lapse in judgment, unexplored possibilities, and impulsive decisions threatening to derail them and an important choice to be made that could irrevocably destroy their friendship.

Giovanna Fletcher created a love story that was at times one-sided and maybe unrequited and at others was filled with possibility. The author also created another love story that was at times full of the promise of a happily-ever-after and at others was on the verge of a disastrous end.

Both love stories involved Maddy. And the author left it up to her character to choose. A character who was loved and in love, who was both confident and uncertain, happy and angry, sentimental, emotional, regretful, remorseful, and guilt-ridden. Making for an affecting and captivating read with an unpredictable outcome.

YOU’RE THE ONE THAT I WANT is the perfect blend of charming and heartwarming and heartrending and tragic. The love story has the potential to be ill-fated for one of the three best friends, out-of-this-world incredible for another, and somewhere in between for the third. It is a lovely and enchanting and tearful read that is certain to make readers choose which love story they’d want for Maddy.

Gauri, the princess of Bharata, has been taken as a prisoner of war by her kingdom’s enemies. Faced with a future of exile and scorn, Gauri has nothing left to lose. Hope unexpectedly comes in the form of Vikram, the cunning prince of a neighboring land and her sworn enemy kingdom. Unsatisfied with becoming a mere puppet king, Vikram offers Gauri a chance to win back her kingdom in exchange for her battle prowess. Together, they’ll have to set aside their differences and team up to win the Tournament of Wishes – a competition held in a mythical city where the Lord of Wealth promises a wish to the victor.

Reaching the tournament is just the beginning. Once they arrive, danger takes on new shapes: poisonous courtesans and mischievous story birds, a feast of fears and twisted fairy revels. Every which way they turn new trials will test their wit and strength. But what Gauri and Vikram will soon discover is that there’s nothing more dangerous than what they most desire.

    The Review

A CROWN OF WISHES is the epic, action-packed, magical, and completely captivating second book in Roshani Chokshi’s The Star-Touched Queen series. With writing that is gorgeous and poetic, a setting that is enchanting and dreamlike, characters who are dynamic and whose personalities balance one another, and a journey that offers the promise of a wish, this sequel is certain to keep the pages turning.

Vikram wanted to be seen as more than just a figurehead for the Council of Ujijain to control. But not having royal blood running through his veins meant that they would always deem him unworthy and never give him the power to rule.

Gauri cared deeply for the people of Bharata. She couldn’t stand idly by while her brother’s callousness, selfishness, and indifference destroyed her home. But when her attempt to overthrow him and take the throne failed, she was banished, imprisoned, and sentenced to death.

Being a champion in the Tournament of Wishes is their only hope of becoming more than their empty titles – the Fox Prince and the Jewel of Bharata. It is the only way they believe they can achieve their dreams. They just need to find a way to trust each other, to pass whatever tests they’re given, and to figure out how to circumvent the rule that says only one of them can leave when the contest is over – that is if they both survive that long.

Roshani Chokshi brought to life a story that is myth and adventure and romance and magic. She imagined a world of injustice and cruelty and one of hopes and dreams and desires and vengeance. She introduced beings of terrifying beauty, those with a deadly touch, those who are cursed, those who long for something they don’t have – fantastical and interesting and bizarre creatures who make this tale fascinating and exciting and absolutely wonderful.

A CROWN OF WISHES will transport readers, with its beautifully written passages and stunning imagery, into both its human and mythical worlds. It will keep them transfixed as Gauri and Vikram confront their fears and put their lives on the line in their attempt to become champions and earn their wishes. And it will make them hope for each character’s happy ending and for the possibility that their happy endings will entwine.

A quick pace, intriguing Hindu mythology, and a riveting storyline make this sophomore novel a must.

[Note: A reading of the first book in the series is not required to enjoy this sequel, but it is strongly recommended.]

    The Review

Kerrelyn Sparks introduces an exciting new world and characters in HOW TO TAME A BEAST IN SEVEN DAYS, the first book in her Embraced series. She begins to paint a picture of a world in conflict, where not only are the kingdoms at war, but differing belief systems have caused their citizens to live in fear. She imbues several of her characters with an interesting array of abilities that she only touches on in this book, but hints at the possibility of exploring more in future books.

She brings together two characters who appear to be complete opposites – one innocent, one deadly – who are forced to keep secrets, and who have seemingly impossible odds of having a happily ever after. And she sets up a situation that is fraught with danger, that is filled with risk, and that demands trust, love, and bravery for any hope of success.

HOW TO TAME A BEAST IN SEVEN DAYS tells the story of Leo – the Beast of Benwick – and Luciana – the daughter of a Duke. The secrets she must keep could get her and her father killed if discovered. His very existence puts him in danger.

Forced to wed to keep the king’s murderous impulses at bay means a perilous and torturous life for them both. Luciana will have to live a lie every day of her life. Leo will have to be forever alert to keep her safe. Both will have to deny their attraction to avoid any possibility of harm from his lethal touch.

Spies, assassins, a greedy, power-hungry and paranoid king, and deadly threats from neighboring kingdoms are just some of what awaits Leo and Luciana in this thrilling and incredibly appealing read. Instant attraction, lust, longing, and the inability to have a physical connection serve to torment both characters and readers alike.

The romance has a tantalizingly slow build throughout the read that culminates in scenes that sizzle. The mystery surrounding their unknown enemies and whether certain secrets will come to light keeps the story suspense-filled. The hope for a happy ending will keep readers captivated. And the promise of new kingdoms to explore, new abilities to discover, new characters to meet, new romances to fall in love with, makes HOW TO TAME A BEAST IN SEVEN DAYS an absolutely delectable, must devour first book in this new series.

Once again I’m super excited to be able to participate in this trailer reveal for Tempest by Julie Cross, which comes out in the U.S. on Tuesday, January 17, 2012. The second book, as yet untitled, is slated for release in 2013 and the third book in the series will be available in 2014.

And this trailer has me even more excited to get my hands on a copy. It’s super cool. I love how the cover models’ images were incorporated into this trailer. And I love the soundtrack and teaser text. I seriously can’t wait to read this book!

Here is the brief description from Goodreads in case you haven’t yet heard of this amazing series.

    Goodreads description:

When Wendy Everly was six-years-old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. It isn’t until eleven years later that Wendy discovers her mother might have been right. With the help of Finn Holmes, Wendy finds herself in a world she never knew existed – a world both beautiful and frightening, and Wendy’s not sure she wants to be a part of it.
