My Favorite Quote from… Black Ice

    myfavoritequote

I was not sure what to expect when I read BLACK ICE by Becca Fitzpatrick. This standalone promised to be quite the departure from her Hush, Hush series. And it was. And it was fan-freaking-tastic.

It was suspenseful and chilling and kept me guessing about certain things that I will not reveal. And it was action-packed and exciting, and there were even moments that were romantic and sexy as heck.

I would have loved to tease a passage that captured some of those more chilling moments – as they were my most favorite. But every time I grabbed one to post, I realized it would have spoiled that portion of the story. And so I chose this one…

    Divider

    My Favorite Quote

“It started out like this,” I said in that same hushed voice. With me. Under you.

He wiped a strand of hair off my cheek. He held his hand there a moment, debating. An unfathomable look flickered in his brown eyes, and I had no idea what he was thinking, or what his next move would be.  – Britt Pfieffer

The author did a fantastic job of creating nail-biting suspense in her novel. And I would have loved to share just one of those jaw-dropping, horror-inducing moments. But they are best left discovered in the story.

Instead I chose just a portion of a very sexy exchange between Britt and another character, who I shall not name, as it, too, is one of my most favorite aspects to BLACK ICE. Becca Fitzpatrick knows just how to create those perfect, swoony-worthy scenes and she brought that skill to her latest novel.

If I were to share a longer excerpt from this particular part of the book, you’d probably need a fan. Because it gets pretty hot.

But it was that first line, the quote from Britt with the two short sentences unsaid, that grabbed me immediately. It made my breath catch. It laser-focused my attention. Because I knew that what followed would sizzle.

    And it definitely did.

So while the shocking lines that set this book apart from the author’s other series were among my most favorite, it was this moment, this quote and short passage, that brought a new dimension to this story. A story I absolutely loved.

    But what about you?

Are you excited to read Becca Fitzpatrick’s BLACK ICE? Do you love stories that will thrill and chill, that also add a touch of romance?

Have you read it already and found it to be as awesome as you’d hoped it would be? And if you have, what were some of your most favorite aspects to the story?

Was it the nail-biting suspense? Was it the danger? Was it the excitement of trying to guess who was guilty? Was it not knowing who to trust?

And was there a quote or passage that you loved that was different from the one I chose, or was it this particular sizzling scene that you bookmarked as a favorite?

    Giveaway: WILDEFIRE Trilogy

    Giveaway

    Wildefire-Trilogy

Today is the release date for AFTERGLOW, the final book in Karsten Knight’s Wildefire trilogy which makes me very, very happy. Because now everyone will get the chance to read it and talk about EVERYTHING that happened in this final book in the series.

But I am also sad to see this series come to an end. It is an amazing series, one of the most original YA series I’ve read, if not the most original. It’s also one of the most well-written, action-packed and exciting. And while I can’t wait to see what else this incredibly talented author comes up with, I am not at all ready to say goodbye to these characters.

Ashline Wilde may not be the easiest character to love at first glance – she’s a volcano goddess whose temper takes “fiery” to a whole other level – but her fierce determination, her independence, her willingness to fight for what she thinks is right and her wicked awesome powers makes her a character you can’t help but adore, respect and fear just a tiny bit as you get to know her. Her sarcastic wit is also a huge plus.

Each and every one of these books received my off-the-menu rating because they were just that fan-freaking-tastic – I’ll be posting my AFTERGLOW review on Friday, but yes, this series-ending book did not disappoint. Not after the first read, and not after the second. And I know, after a series re-read, I’ll be no less in love with it than I am right now.

For those of you who have not yet met Ashline, Eve, Colt, Wes and the other characters in this series, I wanted to be able to share this series so that you can meet them. And so I’m giving away two sets of these books for giveaway.

For those who met them but haven’t met all of them, you are also welcome to enter the giveaway, and if you win it just means you’ll have one or two books to give away to a friend who hasn’t.

And for those of you who have not yet heard about this series or this author, there is some information about them below, including links to a couple of excerpts offered by the publisher.

I could go on and on and continue to gush and ramble, but as I’ve already done that in my reviews, I think I’ll just say HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY AFTERGLOW!

But her fresh start at Blackwood Academy doesn’t go as planned. Just as Ash is beginning to enjoy the perks of her new school—being captain of the tennis team, a steamy romance with a hot, local park ranger—Ash discovers that a group of gods and goddesses have mysteriously enrolled at Blackwood…and she’s one of them. To make matters worse, Eve has resurfaced to haunt Ash, and she’s got some strange abilities of her own.

With a war between the gods looming over campus, Ash must master the new fire smoldering within before she clashes with her sister one more time…

    Dots_Divider

I didn’t even have to look to see what books were releasing the week of November 12th. I’ve had AFTERGLOW‘s release date committed to memory for what feels like forever. It was going to be the book I spotlighted this week no matter what other books were coming out the same week. It’s my most anticipated release and has been since long before I actually got my hands on this final book and devoured it.

It was an epic finish to an absolutely phenomenal series. One that will forever stand out as a favorite.

I loved the possibility of this series before I ever read the first word. And after I did I fell immediately and madly in love with it. It was different and brilliant and the writing was gorgeous. And with each book it just got better and better.

This final installment in the series was so far beyond amazing. I could not tear my eyes away from the moment I picked it up to the moment I turned to the final page. And when that happened I didn’t want to. Saying goodbye was not at all easy.

I only read it just the once, though I wanted to read it again and again. But as it is a signed and printed ARC I didn’t want to risk any bent or damaged pages. However I can’t resist the chance to read it just one more time before the final version is released. So it will my very next off-pile read.

As I don’t want to spoil this last book for those who haven’t yet read it and I don’t want to spoil the series for those who haven’t yet met Ashline Wilde, I don’t even want to talk about what’s mentioned in the description. But I will just say that this series was, is, amazing. AFTERGLOW is action-packed, it’s riveting. It was everything I hoped it would be. Though I wish it wasn’t goodbye.

While there aren’t a million books releasing the week of November 12th, even if it was up against any number of favorites, AFTERGLOW would still have been the only one I’d consider as the book to watch this week. I read it. I fell head-over-heels in love with it. Yes, there were tears. Yes, there were times that I was so unbelievably anxious. Yes, I may have held my breath during certain scenes… many of them.

And, yes, this book couldn’t have been more awesome if it tried.

I have been waiting for its release for over a year. I have been counting down the months, weeks and now, finally, days – just 18 left. I have been dying to talk about this book with those who have read it. And I have been anxiously awaiting its arrival on both my Kindle and my doorstep.

So, yeah, you better believe that AFTERGLOW is the book to watch this week.

In the second book of the Arcana Chronicles Evie has now fully come into her powers as the tarot Empress. And Jackson was there to see it all. Things get even more complicated when Evie meets Death, the mysterious, sexy Endless Knight. Somehow the Empress and Death share a romantic history – one that Evie can’t remember, but Death can’t forget. She is drawn to the Endless Knight, but is in love with Jack. Determined to discover why she’s been granted these powers, Evie struggles to accept her place in a prophecy that will either save the world, or completely destroy it.

    Review

ENDLESS KNIGHT is dark and seductive. It’s intense. It’s riveting. It is action-packed from the very first sentence to the very last word on the very last page. It is beautiful and it’s gruesome. It’s tantalizing, it’s thrilling, it’s mind-blowing. It takes readers on an exhilarating, nerve-wracking, suspense-filled and positively electrifying ride. A ride that will leave them dangling precariously off the edge of a very steep cliff.

One player down. Twenty-one remain. The game has now officially begun. The Empress has made the first move and Death is now ready to make his.

With his sights set on Evie, it’s only a matter of time before he finds her, before he acts upon the threats of violence he’s been taunting her with, before they must face one another in a battle, a fight that Evie has never before won. Not as the May Queen. Not as the Red Witch, Phyta. Never.

But as the Poison Princess she must find a way to defeat him. Because in this game, where the prize is immortality and there can be only one winner, the stakes are higher than ever before. With the world on the verge of collapse this might be the final game that gets played. With no one else in their alliance strong enough defeat Death, Evie is their only hope for survival. And with only one lifetime to spend with Jack, losing now would mean losing him forever.

So she must do whatever it takes to win, to defeat Death, an immortal foe. Even if that means giving him her heart.

Author Kresley Cole expanded the world of the Arcana in this sequel – new characters were introduced, new alliances were made, new battles were fought, and one character’s past was revealed. She turned up the heat. She increased the suspense, the tension, the drama. She delivered shocking surprises. She uncovered secrets, lies, betrayals. She created a story that sizzles, is wicked and sexy and utterly enthralling.

ENDLESS KNIGHT picks up where POISON PRINCESS left off and immediately answers the question of what happens next, a question fans of this series have been anxiously awaiting. It continues the characters’ journey across its danger-filled landscape and presents them with new complications, new allies and enemies and even deadlier hurdles to overcome.

The story is filled with unexpected twists and turns that will keep the pages turning. It adds a new bad boy to the mix to make things even more interesting. It keeps things exciting with a new setting and new characters with intriguing abilities. And it all comes together through the author’s gorgeous, grisly, sarcastic, intoxicating and absolutely phenomenal writing.

    Reviewer gives this book…

    6

Like In-N-Out Burger‘s infamous secret menu this one deserves my off-the-menu 6 star rating.

    On a personal note…

Every time I try to write down my personal thoughts about this book I realize that there’s just no way I can do it justice. My words are inadequate to describe just how I felt – how I feel – about this book.

I want to shout, “Oh my gosh you have to buy this book, you have to devour this book and you have to talk to me all about it once you have!”

Because I’m dying to talk to anyone and everyone about it. I’m dying to see what readers thought about what happened with Evie and Jack, what happened with Death and most of all what happened at the end. That ending… that ending is killing me.

I want to talk about how amazing it was to be back in this world, to see what happened after that ending in the first book that absolutely destroyed me, that broke my heart and made me so nervous about what would happen in this book. But words fail.

I want to talk about how reading this book felt like coming home – albeit to a dark and twisted world where human beings are more than a little bit savage, where a deadly game is playing out and where two of those players are favorite characters of mine. But I am unable to express just how happy it made me, how easy it was to love this story.

I want to share just what I thought about how things changed between Evie and Jack, how wary I now am about certain characters I used to trust, how thrilled I am that Death is everything I hoped he’d be and so much more. But every word that comes to mind is insufficient.

I want to talk to about how much I loved every single word of this story, every single direction it went in, every single interaction between the characters, every new character I met – yes, even Ogen – every single tension-filled, nail-biting, steamy hot, heartbreaking, chilling moment. But there are no words.

My words to describe the awesomeness that is this book pale in comparison to just how phenomenal it really is. They’re fumbling, nonsensical, pathetic little things. But they’re all I have. And not saying anything about this book seems somehow worse. So…

ENDLESS KNIGHT is a fan-freaking-tastic sequel. It blew my mind, patched it up and blew it to pieces all over again. It checked all the boxes. Dark – yes and I would have had it no other way. Sexy – yes, yes, yes and I’m talking the hot, steamy, “fan yourself” kind of sexy. Nerve-wracking – oh yes my nerves were frayed, shot, wrecked by the time I reached the end. Suspenseful – yes and of the “hold your breath” as if that would somehow help variety of suspense. Wicked – deliciously, delectably so. Action-packed – oh there was action, all kinds of action. It was intense, edge-of-your-seat exciting, and abso-freaking-lutely amazing.

In every way ENDLESS KNIGHT is, was and forever will be the perfect book for me. I loved the first book in the series – it was a top five favorite last year – but this book, this shocking and gorgeous and gruesome and jaw-dropping sequel moves this series into my top five favorite YA series of all time.

    Dots_Divider

    Favorite passage…

Can I reprint the entire book here? Probably not….

And as most of this book is super spoiler-y choosing just one passage that isn’t too revealing has been an enormous challenge. Because I want to include the one where Jack said… or the one where Jack did… or the one where Death chose…. Yeah, not at all easy.

But I had to choose a Jack passage. Because any passage about Death would reveal things better left discovered in the book. And it’s only a teeny bit spoiler-y.

“We’re out here with no protection from Baggers, no lookout, and I’m still a heartbeat from taking you! You mesmerizing me too? That’s the only goddamned reason I’d still be thinking about you after all this shit. All my life, I never went looking for trouble, but it always found me! You’re just the latest helping of grief.”

My eyes pricked with tears. “I didn’t want it to be like this.”

The week of October 1st has an insane amount of books releasing that I’m dying to have in my hands right about now. There were so many, in fact, that I opted just to list five of those “other” books releasing at the bottom of this post.

But the book I’m obsessing over the most, the book I am most excited for, and the book that has left its mark on me in a very permanent way is Kresley Cole’s ENDLESS KNIGHT. It’s a book that I was lucky enough to read early. It’s a book that I can’t stop thinking about. It’s a book that I want to experience again as if it were the first time. And it’s a book I plan on re-reading this weekend, along with the first book in the series.

So, yeah, there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that it would be the book to watch this week.

I do plan on writing a review and posting it next week. I can’t get this book out of my mind so I just have to share my non-spoiler-y thoughts about it here on the blog… well… once I’m able to speak about this book without revealing spoilers. Because I feel like this entire book is one ginormous spoiler.

And as I will be writing up a review, I don’t want to go into too many details about what I loved about this book – everything – and what its drawbacks were – there were none – and why I’m so obsessed – Death (the character not the state of being) – and why the ending killed me – as if I’d reveal that!

So I will try to stick within the confines of ENDLESS KNIGHT‘s description when talking about this amazing book and why it’s a book that must, must, must be in the spotlight. Though the description doesn’t even begin to do it justice.

I love Evie’s powers, though she is totally scary when she goes all Empress – vines, thorns, poison. Yeah she’s totally fierce, often wicked and maybe just a little bit bloodthirsty. I would love to talk about Jack, but I can’t say much because any mention of him would be all sorts of spoiler-y. I will say that I do still love him, but…

Death. I am obsessed with Death, the Endless Knight. He intrigued me in Poison Princess and his role in this sequel reveals a lot more about him… and of him. Though as the description doesn’t talk about the latter half of my previous sentence I’ll just stop right now.

But even if I hadn’t read this book and become as obsessed with this story – which blew me out of the water, sky high and into outer space (I’m still in orbit) – I would still would have chosen ENDLESS KNIGHT as the book to watch. Because I think this author is simply amazing and her series couldn’t be more of a “me” series if it tried. It’s dark, it’s sexy, it’s a little bit gruesome, it has intriguing lore, a fierce heroine, wickedly yummy bad boys and brilliant writing. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

Well, actually, that’s not true. I could use the next book in the series right about now. Because that ending? Oh my gosh. How the heck am I supposed to wait for an entire year and then some for the next installment in this fan-freaking-tastic series?

So, without any hesitation, as much as I love so many of the books releasing the week of October 1st, there was no other book than ENDLESS KNIGHT that I wanted to put in the spotlight this week. It’s a book I’m going to have to keep re-reading until I get it out of my system. Yes, it’s one of those books.

And if you want to get a longer look than just the description provides, head over to the series website and check out this EXCERPT.

Go to school, hang out with her best friend, Vee, and dodge mom’s creepy new boyfriend.

But there is this voice in the back of her head, an idea that she can almost reach out and touch. Visions of angel wings and unearthly creatures that have nothing to do with the life she knows.

And this unshakable feeling that a part of her is missing.

Then Nora crosses paths with a sexy stranger, whom she feels a mesmerizing connection to. He seems to hold all the answers…and her heart. Every minute she spends with him grows more and more intense until she realizes she could be falling in love. Again.

SILENCE is the fast-paced, wildly entertaining, and absolutely riveting third book in author Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush series. As with its predecessor, it starts off with a captivating prologue that draws readers back into the world.

And it continues with a story that will keep readers glued to the page as Nora struggles to remember the past five months of her life. Not only the months she has been missing, but months that encompass her entire relationship with Patch. A boy she can no longer remember even exists.

Even as Nora remains in the dark about the world she had once been a part of, a world of Nephilim, fallen angels and archangels, she cannot seem to escape it. And even without her memories intact, when she learns of their existence, of Cheshvan, of the Black Hand’s plans for war, of her friends’ roles, of hers, she can’t sit idly by.

Because not only does she have a stake in the outcome of the Black Hand’s nefarious plans, she has a vital part to play in them. One that threatens her very existence. And one that could cost her everything if she fails.

SILENCE takes Nora’s story in an exciting new direction. Instead of immediately continuing on with the love story and the struggle between the immortals, it’s almost as if it’s a new beginning for the characters and for the reader.

With no knowledge of her recent past, Nora must try to rebuild her life from where she last remembers it. Before her discovery of angels. Before she met Patch. And before she became aware of who she really was. All of which creates a new trajectory for the story, a new opportunity to discover a different – and far more likable – Nora, and a chance at a brand new love story.

This twist to the story gives readers the advantage as their awareness trumps that of the main character. It puts them in the position of knowing when she’s being deceived and of when she’s in danger. And it creates moments of tension and nail-biting suspense, heartache and heartbreak that would not otherwise have been part of the reading experience, making for an immensely entertaining read.

And with new hurdles for the characters to overcome, new enemies for them to defeat and even more obstacles in the way of a happily ever after, with SILENCE author Becca Fitzpatrick delivers the most exciting, most suspenseful and most gripping installment yet in her Hush, Hush series.

    On a personal note…

From the moment I started reading SILENCE I was transported back into the world of fallen angels, dangerous foes, and heartbreaking love stories. Even though it had been years since I’d read CRESCENDO, I was able to pick right back up with Nora and Patch’s story.

And oh my gosh the way this installment starts out was even more jaw-dropping than the way things ended in that last book. It practically broke my heart to hear what happened to Nora and what she lost. And that was all right at the beginning.

I could not tear my eyes away from this book once I started reading. It was that addictive. There was a comfort to returning to a story I’ve loved after having been apart from it for so long. It also gave me some distance from some of the things that frustrated me about the main character in those first two books, but especially in CRESCENDO.

In SILENCE – finally – I grew to like Nora Grey. She was still insecure and slightly jealous, but it wasn’t all she was anymore. In trying to regain her memories, she somehow found a strength she didn’t have before. She was a character that I could sympathize with and by the story’s end grew to really like.

Even though this book released ages ago I still don’t want to be too spoiler-y about the plot. But I loved that SILENCE focused on finding ways to stop the Black Hand and on recovering Nora’s memories rather than miscommunications and hurt feelings.

While this story wasn’t perfect, it was pretty close. There were a few inconsistencies that jumped out at me, and a few moments that didn’t quite feel believable to the story, but they were only minor distractions. And they didn’t keep me from falling crazy in love with this book.

Patch seems to have done a complete 180 in SILENCE. And while he wasn’t too perfect, thankfully – yes he retained a bit of his bad-boy edge – his behavior wasn’t of the devastatingly heartbreaking variety. More the swoon-worthy one.

I got so caught up in this story that when it reached its end I just had to dive into the final book in the series even though I had planned to wait a few weeks. But after the way things ended, I just had to know what was in store for the characters in the series conclusion.

There is no question that, for me, this is my favorite book of the series. It was fast-paced, exciting and riveting. It made me feel all the feels. It was suspenseful. It was heartbreaking. And yeah, I may have had more than my normal share of sighs throughout.

It also made me want to go back and re-read the first two books in the series so that I could fall in love with the story all over again.

    Favorite passage…

It may be a very short one, but for me this one is my favorite.

A memory stirred inside me. Angel, I seemed to hear a smooth voice whisper. You’re mine.

    Goodreads description:

A teenage witch juggles popularity and romance while keeping her powers a secret in this spellbinding debut.

Almost-sixteen-year-old Brooklyn feels invisible, but she desperately wants to be pretty, to be popular, to be adored by a cute guy. Luckily for her, she’s a witch about to come of age—so she’s only a few spells away from making it all happen.

On her milestone birthday, Brooklyn’s conservative parents finally unbind her powers, which include the ability to magically match couples with a love spell. Brooklyn uses her special skills to get a makeover, new friends, and the attention of her crush, Asher. But the popular clique Brooklyn wants to infiltrate puts her in the same precarious position as her Salem ancestors: If she’s found out, she could be vilified—and lose Asher in the process. Can she make the most of her magic, or will she be luckless and loveless? Be careful what you witch for!

WHAT THE SPELL is a fun, charming, bittersweet and utterly delightful story of magic, mean girls and boys, actions and consequences, and the price one girl is willing to pay to fit in. A quick and engaging read, with just a touch of the paranormal to differentiate itself from its contemporary peers, this story will hold readers captive as they follow Brooklyn Sparks as she treads the line between right and wrong in her attempt to shed her cloak of invisibility and find out just who she really is.

All Brooklyn wanted was to be noticed. Having been virtually non-existent for years, she couldn’t wait for her parents to unbind her powers so that she could change her life. So that she could go from being friendless and invisible to pretty and popular. So that she could make a difference. So that she would matter.

But when her makeover got her noticed by “The Elite” – the most popular group of kids in school – she wanted more than anything to become one of them. To go to the best parties. To meet the most influential people. To be revered by her classmates. To be powerful.

And it was all within her reach. She just had to prove her loyalty. She just had to pass their tests. She just had to be willing to cross the line.

Author Brittany Geragotelis has created a main character who is both incredibly sympathetic and wildly frustrating, someone who must decide whether their need for acceptance is worth the price for popularity, and whether honesty, selflessness and doing what’s right are more important than fitting in.

WHAT THE SPELL is a story that will have readers rooting for the main character to make the right choices, cringing when she doesn’t and cheering when does. And with a cast of characters that keeps this story exciting – from the powerful Elite to the adorable and swoon-worthy Asher Astley – and an ending that will make them wonder exactly what happened and anxious to find out just what comes next, this prequel story in the Life’s a Witch series hits just the right balance between being one that is light, fun and flirty and one that has a bit more depth.

For readers looking for a story with a fresh twist on a mean girl theme, a touch of the paranormal with spellcasting and witchcraft, a character who must learn one or two of life’s lessons, and an ending that leaves off with a bit of a mystery, WHAT THE SPELL won’t disappoint.

    On a personal note…

I absolutely loved reading WHAT THE SPELL and getting to meet Brooklyn. I knew this story would be about a girl trying to get “in” with the popular crowd by using magic. And I knew that something was bound to go wrong.

I assumed there would be some kind of mishap with a spell or a secret would be revealed in a horribly embarrassing way. But this story delivered way more than I expected.

I did not expect the story to go into as much depth about actions and consequences as it did. I did not expect the main character to be given so many opportunities to do the right thing. I didn’t expect the main character’s super cute crush to be so good and honest and empathetic and understanding.

I didn’t expect there to be lessons to be learned from the lifestyle choices of Brooklyn and Asher’s families. And I did not expect that one thing that was left open-ended at the very end.

WHAT THE SPELL was a super quick one-sit-read. It was a story that kept me connected throughout. Even though Brooklyn drove me crazy half the time. And I’m talking the kind of crazy where I shout at the book, roll my eyes and sigh. Which proves that, yes, I was thoroughly engaged. So much so that “Brookie” made me want to throttle her. Repeatedly.

While I completely understood why she did many of the things she did, I could not fully grasp all of her choices. Especially those where Asher was involved. Because… let’s just say that I would not have chosen as she did in those particular instances.

But what drove me even more insane was that I was not – I’m still not – entirely sure she learned from all of her mistakes at the end.

Speaking of endings… after the way things ended with two ginormous questions left unanswered, I am just dying to find out exactly what happened and what will happen next. Absolutely dying.

I would love to talk more about that… but as it would totally spoil this book for those who haven’t read it, I’ll just talk about favorite characters.

While I loved getting to know Brooklyn, my most favorite character in this story was Asher. While Brooklyn was at times adorable, Asher was at all times kind of amazing. And while I’d like to go into each and every one of the ways he was amazing, that would definitely spoil more than a few things about this story.

I even loved getting to “meet” Gigi and Eliza. Though I wouldn’t list Gigi as one of my favorite characters, she definitely made this story that much more interesting. Her presence alone added drama. And she seemed to have a bit more depth to her than Brooklyn.

I enjoyed going on this journey with Brooklyn even though I wanted to shake some sense into her at almost every step of the way. I can’t wait for the sequel and I am keeping my fingers crossed that there will be more of Asher and his family in that book. And I hope that the next book in the series will answer those questions at the end and dive a little bit deeper into the witchy side of things… especially about just what the deal is with Samuel Parris.
