Book Watch: Releasing This Week #179

Below are the (mostly) YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of June 3rd-June 9th that I have pre-ordered.

MAKE IT COUNT by Megan Erickson releases in the U.S. today, June 3, 2014, in eBook format. (A paperback edition releases on July 8th.) It is currently available to order/pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by William Morrow Impulse, the print edition is 384 pages.

MAKE IT COUNT is the first book in Author Megan Erickson’s Bowler University series. The second books in the series, MAKE IT RIGHT, is slated for release on September 9, 2014 and the third book in the series, MAKE IT LAST, releases on January 6, 2015.

I only recently discovered MAKE IT COUNT by Megan Erickson, but after reading the description I just had to pre-order a copy for my Kindle and I can’t wait to read it. It sounds like it’s going to be a lot of twisty-turny fun.

And after checking out a few of the blurbs, I think the description totally hits the nail on the head. It is fun. It’s also been called “steamy” and “addicting” and “romantic.”

While I’m currently tackling three or four books, I definitely want to get this on the pile next week. I’m really enjoying mixing in different genres, one of my favorites being New Adult. So if this book is half as good as it sounds I know I’ll totally love it.

And I may just have to take a quick peek or two at it when it downloads.

Kat Caruso wishes her brain had a return policy, or at least a complaint hot-line. The defective organ is constantly distracted, terrible at statistics, and absolutely flooded with inappropriate thoughts about her boyfriend’s gorgeous best friend, Alec…who just so happens to be her brand new math tutor. Who knew nerd was so hot?

Kat usually goes through tutors like she does boyfriends—both always seem to bail when they realize how hopeless she is. It’s safer for her heart to keep everyone at arm’s reach. But Alec is always stepping just a little too close.

Alec Stone should not be fantasizing about Kat. She’s adorable, unbelievably witty, and completely off limits. He’d never stab his best friend in the back…

But when secrets are revealed, the lines of loyalty are blurred. To make it count, Alec must learn messy human emotions can’t be solved like a trigonometry function. And Kat has to trust Alec may be the first guy to want her for who she is, and not in spite of it.

    The Truth About Alice

THE TRUTH ABOUT ALICE by Jennifer Mathieu releases in the U.S. today, June 3, 2014 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Roaring Brook Press, the print edition is 208 pages.

When I first read the description for THE TRUTH ABOUT ALICE in the publisher’s catalog I immediately pre-ordered it for my Kindle. This story sounds gritty and true-to-life and so very different from what I usually read. But it sounds like I story I really will enjoy diving into.

I’m curious if I’ll be surprised by the reveals, or whether I’ll find that getting older doesn’t necessarily mean becoming deluded about the realities of being a teenager. I’m curious if the truth about Alice will be revealed, or whether the character will keep her secret truths.

While I won’t get the chance to read it in the next couple of weeks, I really want to read this book some time this month. Because it is definitely a story that isn’t from one of my “go to” categories and I’m really looking to step out of my comfort zone and discover new and interesting books.

Everyone knows Alice slept with two guys at one party. When Healy High star quarterback, Brandon Fitzsimmons, dies in a car crash, it was because he was sexting with Alice. Ask anybody. Rumor has it Alice Franklin is a slut. It’s written all over the “slut stall” in the girls’ bathroom: “Alice had sex in exchange for math test answers” and “Alice got an abortion last semester.” After Brandon dies, the rumors start to spiral out of control.

In this remarkable debut novel, four Healy High students tell all they “know” about Alice–and in doing so reveal their own secrets and motivations, painting a raw look at the realities of teen life. But in this novel from Jennifer Mathieu, exactly what is the truth about Alice? In the end there’s only one person to ask: Alice herself.

GASP by Lisa McMann releases in the U.S. today, June 3, 2014, in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Simon Pulse, the print edition is 288 pages.

GASP is the third book in Lisa McMann’s Visions series.

I cannot believe that GASP, the third book in this series, is releasing today. I am so far behind on this series. I don’t even know whether this is the final book in the series – though I think it might be. But I am totally stoked that the finished copy will be landing on my Kindle today.

I love Lisa McMann’s writing and own every single YA and MG book she’s written. I’ve even listened to one of her books in audio format after having read it. So I can’t believe that I haven’t gotten caught up on Visions before GASP released.

I don’t know what happened or what’s going to happen. I don’t know what Jules has been up to. I don’t know whether Sawyer is okay. All I know is that now that I have these three books in my collection, I can’t wait to find out. And, hopefully, I’ll be able to dive in at the end of this month or early next month during the holiday weekend.

The visions aren’t stopping, and neither is the danger in this third “dramatic, quick-paced thriller (Kirkus Reviews)” in a series from the New York Times bestselling author of the Wake trilogy.

After narrowly surviving two harrowing tragedies, Jules now fully understands the importance of the visions that she and people around her are experiencing. She’s convinced that if the visions passed from her to Sawyer after she saved him, then they must now have passed from Sawyer to one of the people he saved.

That means it’s up to Jules to figure out which of the school shooting survivors is now suffering from visions of another crisis. And once she realizes who it is, she has to convince that survivor that this isn’t all crazy—that the images are of something real. Something imminent.

As the danger escalates more than ever before in the conclusion to the Visions series, Jules wonders if she’ll finally find out why and how this is happening—before it’s too late to prevent disaster.

    Mr Mercedes

MR. MERCEDES by Stephen King releases in the U.S. today, June 3, 2014, in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Scribner, the print edition is 448 pages.

I don’t think by now it is any surprise that of course I’ve had MR. MERCEDES pre-ordered for ages. It shouldn’t be shocking to learn that I have been anxiously awaiting this book. And it should probably be expected that I will be taking a peek… or maybe a longer look… at this book the instant it downloads.

Because I love Stephen King’s writing. And any book of his that talks about going into the mind of an “obsessed, insane killer” is one I must read. Right away. Especially when the description calls it “chilling and unforgettable.”

This story definitely sounds a little gruesome and macabre. It sounds like it’s classic Stephen King. And while I may not end up talking about it here on the blog beyond today, I am pretty sure I’ll have read it and fallen in love with it some time this week.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the “perk” and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again.

Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.

Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

    Fall From India Place

FALL FROM INDIA PLACE by Samantha Young releases in the U.S. today, June 3, 2014, in paperback, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in all formats at AMAZON and in paperback and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by NAL Trade, the print edition is 384 pages.

FALL FROM INDIA PLACE is the fourth full-length book in Samantha Young’s On Dublin Street series. The fifth book in the series, slated for release in 2015, is currently untitled.

I am so excited for the release of FALL FROM INDIA PLACE. I just recently purchased all the books in this series and can’t wait to meet each of the character couples.

I have loved Samantha Young’s writing for a number of years, but I’ve yet to read this bestselling series of hers. There was just something about this particular book that demanded that I pre-order it and discover what everyone else has known for awhile about this series – that it’s awesome. Upon reflection, I think it was the very first line that talks of letting go of the past and trusting in the future that drew me in.

While I normally like to read books in a series in order, I think I’m going to start with this new book so that I can read it sooner rather than later. I want to meet Hannah and Marco and find out whether the secret tears them apart or whether they get a second chance. And I really hope to be able to do that mid-month.

The New York Times bestselling author of On Dublin Street and Down London Road returns with a story about letting go of the past and learning to trust in the future…

When Hannah Nichols last saw Marco D’Alessandro, five long years ago, he broke her heart. The bad boy with a hidden sweet side was the only guy Hannah ever loved—and the only man she’s ever been with. After one intense night of giving into temptation, Marco took off, leaving Scotland and Hannah behind. Shattered by the consequences of their night together, Hannah has never truly moved on.

Leaving Hannah was the biggest mistake of Marco’s life, something he has deeply regretted for years. So when fate reunites them, he refuses to let her go without a fight. Determined to make her his, Marco pursues Hannah, reminding her of all the reasons they’re meant to be together.…

But just when Marco thinks they’re committed to a future together, Hannah makes a discovery that unearths the secret pain she’s been hiding from him, a secret that could tear them apart before they have a real chance to start over again….

    Missed Last Week

TEASE by Sophie Jordan released in the U.S. on May 27, 2014 in paperback, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by William Morrow Paperbacks, the print edition is 320 pages.

TEASE is the second full-length novel in Sophie Jordan’s Ivy Chronicles. The third book in the series, WILD, is slated for release on November 18, 2014.

I am devastated that I didn’t include the release for TEASE in last week’s post. I had it pre-ordered, it downloaded, and I didn’t even think anything of it, as I was so sure I’d rambled about it. But in checking out last week’s post in order to create this week’s, it seems that I did not.

I had the chance to read TEASE pre-release, and I took full advantage of it. I read it and I loved it and I’ve been hoping that there will be advance copies of WILD so that I won’t have to wait until November to read on. And even though I had already devoured this story, I was thrilled when the finished copy downloaded to my Kindle.

Emerson and Shaw’s story was exciting and sexy. Even more so than Pepper and Reece’s. And while I could go on and on and talk all about what happened between them, I think I’ll refrain and let you check out the description. But if you already have a copy of this book, then you’ll want to check that out instead.

As I have already read this story, I won’t be reading it again quite yet. But I might just re-read both books in this series before book three becomes available. Because I’d love to compare and find out whose story I love the best.

What happens when a girl who always calls the shots meets a guy who’s too wild for even her?

A born flirt and good-time party girl, Emerson has never had a problem finding a willing guy. She’s always chosen her hookups carefully, and she’s never broken her three cardinal rules:

Never let them see the real you.
    Never fall in love.
Always leave them begging for more.

Then Shaw comes along. A hottie from the wrong side of the tracks, he’s immune to her flirtatious banter and come-hither smile. After rescuing her from a disastrous night at a biker bar, he doesn’t even try to take her to bed—he calls her a tease and sends her home instead. Unable to resist a challenge, or forget the sexy, dark-eyed, bad-boy biker, she vows to bring him to his knees.

But instead of making Shaw beg, Emerson finds herself craving him. For the first time in her life, she’s throwing out her rule book. Suddenly, she’s the one panting for a guy she can’t control—a guy who won’t settle for anything less than the real Emerson and who forces her to do things she’s never imagined, including facing a past she thought she’d buried.

A guy who just might leave her wanting more. . . .

An inspiring, real, and fresh young adult novel about how life can change in an instant by Chelsie Hill, one of the stars Sundance Channel’s unscripted series Push Girls, based on her own life

Kara is a high school junior who’s loving life. She’s popular, has a great group of friends and an amazing boyfriend, and she’s a shoe-in for homecoming queen. Even though her parents can’t stop fighting and her ex-boyfriend can’t seem to leave her alone, Kara won’t let anything get in the way of her perfect year. It’s Friday night, and Kara arrives at a party, upset after hearing her parents having another one of their awful fights, and sees another girl with her hands all over her boyfriend. Furious, Kara leaves to take a drive, and, as she’s crossing an intersection, a car comes out of nowhere and slams into the driver’s side of Kara’s car.

When Kara wakes up, she has no memory of the night before. Where is she? Why are her parents crying? And, most importantly — why can’t she feel her legs? As Kara is forced to adjust to her new life, where her friends aren’t who they seemed to be and her once-adoring boyfriend is mysteriously absent, she starts to realize that what matters in life isn’t what happens to you — it’s the choices you make and the people you love.

Co-written by “Push Girls” star Chelsie Hill, whose real life closely mirrors Kara’s experience, this novel will open the eyes of readers everywhere who have never met someone who lives with paralysis.

THE GIRL WHO NEVER WAS is the story of Selkie Stewart, who thinks she’s a totally normal teenager growing up in Boston. Sure, her father is in an insane asylum, her mother left her on his doorstep—literally—when she was a baby, and she’s being raised by two ancient aunts who spend their time hunting gnomes in their Beacon Hill townhouse. But other than that her life is totally normal! She’s got an adventurous best friend who’s always got her back and an unrequited crush on an older boy named Ben. Just like any other teenager, right?

When Selkie goes in search of the mother she’s never known, she gets more than she bargained for. It turns out that her mother is faerie royalty, which would make Selkie a faerie princess—except for the part where her father is an ogre, which makes her only half of anything. Even more confusing, there’s a prophecy that Selkie is going to destroy the tyrannical Seelie Court, which is why her mother actually wants to kill her. Selkie has been kept hidden all her life by her adoring aunts, with the help of a Salem wizard named Will. And Ben. Because the boy she thinks she’s in love with turns out to be a faerie whose enchantment has kept her alive, but also kept her in the dark about her own life.

Now, with enchantments dissolved and prophecies swinging into action, Selkie finds herself on a series of mad quests to save the people she’s always loved and a life she’s learning to love. But in a supernatural world of increasingly complex alliances and distressingly complicated deceptions, it’s so hard to know who to trust. Does her mother really wish to kill her? Would Will sacrifice her for the sake of the prophecy? And does Ben really love her or is it all an elaborate ruse? In order to survive, Selkie realizes that the key is learning—and accepting—who she really is.

    OBSIDIAN: Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something… unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

ONYX: Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there’s this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that’s possible. Against all common sense, I’m falling for Daemon. Hard.

    But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

OPAL: No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well… There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger… and they know it.

ORIGIN: Daemon will do anything to get Katy back.

After the successful but disastrous raid on Mount Weather, he’s facing the impossible. Katy is gone. Taken. Everything becomes about finding her. Taking out anyone who stands in his way? Done. Burning down the whole world to save her? Gladly. Exposing his alien race to the world? With pleasure.

All Katy can do is survive.

Surrounded by enemies, the only way she can come out of this is to adapt. After all, there are sides of Daedalus that don’t seem entirely crazy, but the group’s goals are frightening and the truths they speak even more disturbing. Who are the real bad guys? Daedalus? Mankind? Or the Luxen?

    Together, they can face anything.

But the most dangerous foe has been there all along, and when the truths are exposed and the lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on?

And will they even be together?

This collection contains all six books in New York Times bestselling author Michael Grant’s breathtaking dystopian sci-fi Gone saga. These page-turning thrillers invoke the classic The Lord of the Flies along with the horror of Stephen King. King himself said: “I love these books.”

In the blink of an eye, everyone disappears. Gone. Except for the young. There are teens, but not one single adult. Just as suddenly, there are no phones, no internet, no television. No way to get help. And no way to figure out what’s happened. Hunger threatens. Bullies rule. A sinister creature lurks. Animals are mutating. And the teens themselves are changing, developing new talents—unimaginable, dangerous, deadly powers—that grow stronger by the day. It’s a terrifying new world. Sides are being chosen, a fight is shaping up. Townies against rich kids. Bullies against the weak. Powerful against powerless. And time is running out: on your birthday, you disappear just like everyone else. . . .

Michael Grant’s Gone series has been praised for its compelling storytelling, multidimensional characters, and multiple points of view. Included in this collection are: Gone, Hunger, Lies, Plague, Fear, and Light.

    Other Releases

    DARK DAYS by Kate Ormand

LOUDER THAN WORDS by Laura Jarratt

There are just so many books releasing this week. I couldn’t keep track of them all. So there are a couple that I didn’t pre-order that I know I’ll want to add to the collection once the dust settles – VIVIAN DIVINE IS DEAD and HUNGRY.

And while I don’t have as many books pre-ordered as I did last week, there are still a ton of books releasing. Which is why I’m pretty sure I’m forgetting one or two books I’ve been curious about. It’s why I forgot to include TEASE last week.

Next week isn’t much better. At least in terms of my TBR pile. I already found at least five books I have on order. I’m sure there are (or will be by then) quite a few more.

And as this post took forever and ever, I think I’ll stop rambling and just wish those of you who have a book releasing a happy book birthday! And to those of you who read and review, I hope that you get to add a few of your anticipated reads to your collection.

    As ever… Happy Reading!

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

Cover Reveal: Moon Spell + Giveaway

    MOON SPELL by Samantha Young

    The Tale of Lunarmorte #1

As you may or may not already know, I’m a huge fan of author Samantha Young and I loved MOON SPELL, the first book in the author’s The Tale of Lunarmorte series. So when she mentioned that her book was getting a brand new cover redesign I just had to reveal it here on the blog.

Especially when I learned that the artist was one of my very favorites – Claudia McKinney of Phatpuppy Art. Because I knew it was going to be gorgeous. And I knew that I would absolutely love it.

And I do! It’s beautiful, ethereal and magical. I love the colors, the font… everything. I love the wolfish shape of Caia’s pupil. And the green glow of her eye is totally captivating.

I also love how the artist creates a softness with the models’ images. It gives them an otherworldly feel, while still retaining a realistic quality.

And oh my gosh, I absolutely love the glow surrounding the title font. It completely draws the eye. It feels as if the letters are in fact glowing naturally and not artificially, giving them a very strong presence.

Which is why I’m so glad for the beautiful green of Caia’s eye, which does help to pull focus away from the title. Otherwise I’d be fixated on that alone.

I am so glad that this cover was redesigned. I think this book finally found its perfect cover. From colors, to tone, to images, to fonts, this is the face of this book.

In case you haven’t yet heard about MOON SPELL, below is just a little bit about the book and a few places where you can find it and a little bit about the author and where you can find her online.

Oh, and I’m also giving away a copy of one of Samantha Young’s books to one winner. So be sure to enter in the Rafflecopter, below.

    About MOON SPELL

It’s bad enough feeling different among the human crowd, but feeling different among wolves?

No one said returning to her pack would be easy, especially after ten years without them, but seventeen year old Caia Ribeiro is unprepared for the realities of the transition. Raised in a world where kids aren’t scared by bedtime tales of the bogeyman but by the real life threat of enemy supernaturals who might come creeping into their community to kill them in their sleep, Caia is used to the darkness; she’s used to the mystery and the intrigue of the ancient underworld war she’s bound to by chance of birth. What she’s having trouble with are pack members treating her with wary suspicion, the Elders tucking secrets behind their backs out of her sightline, and her young Alpha, Lucien, distracting her, with a dangerous attraction, from her decision to discover the truth.

But as the saying goes ‘the truth will out’ and when it does, Caia will only have so long to prepare herself before the war comes pounding on their door threatening to destroy the safe, secret lives of the wolves… and the girl they protect.

    Cover Reveal: Darkness, Kindled

Darkness, Kindled (Fire Spirits #4) by Samantha Young

    Coming Fall 2012

I am such a huge fan of author Samantha Young. Everything she writes I fall in love with. So when I learned that she was having a cover reveal for an upcoming book in her Fire Spirits series, of course I wanted in.

And when I heard that the cover, as many of hers are, was designed by Claudia McKinney of Phatpuppy Art I knew, sight unseen, that it was going to be gorgeous.

While the description and publication date aren’t yet available for this book, it is still available to add to your Goodreads TBR list. Just click the cover, above. And the first three books in the series, Smokeless Fire, Scorched Skies and the recently released Borrowed Ember are all available to check out on Goodreads.

This cover is so amazingly beautiful. What grabs me first are the colors. I love the mix of pinks, oranges and yellows. And I love how the brightness only appears on the top right and bottom left, drawing the eye.

I love how the model appears as if she’s both coming out of the smoke or is made of the smoke itself. And I love that the backdrop is dark but not pitch black, as if the light from the smoke is so intense it lights up the entire sky.

The cover model is beautiful and has an elegance to her pose, which does make it appear as if she’s floating or flying. And that her expression, while serene, is slightly intense due to the light color of her irises.

Of all the covers, I love the brightness used to highlight the font in the series title on this one the best. And I love how both the title and author are bolded, three-dimensional and shaded, but yet in slightly different colors of shading.

I could stare at this cover for hours and discover something new hidden in the smoke. Each bright spot feels purposeful. And as a whole the cover not only looks gorgeous but makes complete sense to the book’s title.

I can’t wait have a hard copy of this book in hand, as I’m sure the cover will look even more stunning in print.

Soooo…. that’s what I think… but what do you think?

When eighteen year old Ari Johnson is transported from her bedroom into the chilling realm of Mount Qaf – home to the terrifying and mercurial Jinn – she learns a truth that rocks her very world. Suddenly her anxiety over college and her broken friendship with Charlie seem like small change compared to the war she now finds herself stuck in the middle of. Her unease isn’t lessened any by the hot guardian, Jai, who won’t stop following her around everywhere – a Jinn whose loyalty Ari hates to question but must. She has no idea who she can trust.

When the truth burns through her life in its determination to turn it to ashes, Ari will have to battle with ancient deadly creatures, epic family drama and heart-wrenching romantic entanglements.

I’m a 26 year old Scottish book addict and I graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2009. I studied ancient and medieval history at uni, and it was in my first year there, in the middle of a classical literature lecture, that I first came up with the idea for The Tale of Lunarmorte. I’ve been writing since as long as I can remember, and I have a particular interest in the paranormal, fantasy and dystopian genres. I love pulling pieces of historical fact (or mythology) and twisting it to fit my stories, and am more than thankful my degree is being put to good use in my writing.

I began self-publishing in 2011 and now write full time.  When I’m not writing, I’m usually thinking about writing or thinking about thinking about writing. When I’m pried from writing you can usually find me either curled up with a good book or my kindle, taking looonnngggg (<—- see what I did there?) walks, swimming (and trying to stay zen when rude older people take up three lanes at a time in what I’m pretty sure is an attempt to drown me), watching a good drama/film or chilling with friends and family. Book Watch: Releasing This Week #63

Below are the YA books coming out this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of March 13th-March 19th that I have pre-ordered.

Infamous by Sherrilyn Kenyon will be released in the U.S. on March 13, 2012 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available online to pre-order in all formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by St. Martin’s Griffin, the print edition is 480 pages.

Infamous is the third book in the Chronicles of Nick series by author Sherrilyn Kenyon.

I seriously have to start reading the Dark-Hunters books and I must get caught up on the Chronicles of Nick. I loved the first book in the series and I’ve been dying to read Invincible since its release. So, of course I pre-ordered this for my Kindle the second it was available.

In this third book, according to the description – and yes I took a peek – Nick Gautier must fight for his survival. Even his father is trying to kill him. And this battle is even more epic because it will determine whether he’s a hero or the boy who “ends the world.”

And apparently for someone who has all sorts of amazing abilities like raising the dead and killing zombies, he isn’t mastering the art of driving. That normal, mundane, human task.

I can’t wait to finally find the time to catch up on Nick’s story and to meet him as an adult in the author’s adult series. I hope to do one or the other in the next couple of months.

Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins will be released in the U.S. on March 13, 2012 in hardcover and eBook format. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Hyperion Books for Children, the print edition is 336 pages.

Spell Bound is the third book in the Hex Hall series by the author.

Finally. Finally, finally, finally! The wait is over. I can’t believe it. Seriously. I know I’m in the middle of reading another book right now, but I will be checking my Kindle download the second I get Spell Bound so that I can find out what the heck happened.

The wait has been torturous. I haven’t been able to stop guessing as to just what might have happened to everyone at the end of Demonglass. I am so glad to not have to wait any longer. The author and publisher have been very hush hush about everything and it’s been killing me. Slowly. Every day. Just killing me.

Even the description doesn’t reveal anything. It actually made things worse by saying that Sophie is “defenseless” and “alone.” What does that mean?

Because of all the secrecy and that cliffhanger ending, I think this is the book I’m most anticipating the release of this week. I spotlighted it for my Book Watch post last month and I’ve been counting down the days until its release.

I am so curious as to why Sophie’s powers have been stripped, how she plans on saving the world and most of all just what happened after that cliffhanger. I have no idea if this is the final book in the series, but I seriously hope not and I hope that if there are many books to come that the endings aren’t quite as cruel as the last.

The Savage Grace by Bree Despain will be released in the U.S. on March 13, 2012 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by EgmontUSA, the print edition is 496 pages.

The Savage Grace is the third and final novel in the Dark Divine series by author Bree Despain.

I can’t believe that The Savage Grace is the final novel in the series. When I heard that it was, a few months back, I was wrecked. This series was one of my very first series about werewolves that I fell in love with – being a fan of the vamps I was always wary of their furry counterparts. But this series was so easy to love.

Even though my pre-order will download tonight I have a feeling that I’m going to pretend that this series is not ending and wait to read it for just a little while. Although I wanted to throttle Grace just a bit in the last book, I still adore her and Daniel and even Caleb.

The description is not making it easy, though. Starting right off with – “A troubled soul. An impossible choice. A final battle.” – has already more than piqued my curiosity. And to say that the love story will have a “breathtaking conclusion” has me freaking out a little.

But I am ecstatic that this book is releasing this week and that I’ll have my copy in just a few short hours. I only wish that there were a couple more books to come.

Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard will be released in the U.S. on March 13, 2012 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Delacorte Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 352 pages.

Wanderlove is author Kirsten Hubbard’s sophomore novel.

Wanderlove is another book whose release date surprised me. But I’m super thrilled it’s releasing this week and that I’ll have a copy for my collection. When I first heard about the book, it seemed like forever until its release, but forever is here.

The cover is what drew me in. Much like the cover for Like Mandarin, the author’s debut novel, its beauty and simplicity really caught my eye. But a story about a girl who is on a “quest for independence” who travels to Central America to discover herself and meets a boy who is also trying to find his way sounds absolutely beautiful and magical and bittersweet.

I can’t wait to meet Bria and Rowan and discover just what they learn about themselves, if anything.

Pretty Crooked by Elisa Ludwig will be released in the U.S. on March 13, 2012 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available online to pre-order in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Katherine Tegen Books, the print edition is 368 pages.

Pretty Crooked is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2012 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at

The title of the book Pretty Crooked is what first grabbed me. Then after reading the description I was hooked. This story sounds fun and super cute. I love Robin Hood stories and one with a contemporary spin is even better.

I had an early ARC I received through a trade, but had to pass it along since I wasn’t able to read it before release, but I did pre-order it because I wanted to have this book in my collection to read when I got the chance.

Prep school. Theft. Revenge. And one incredibly distracting bad boy. Yes, this book is definitely a book I can’t wait to read.

Starters by Lissa Price will be released in the U.S. on March 13, 2012 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Delacorte Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 352 pages.

Starters is the first book in a new series of the same name by the author and is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2012 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at

I only just recently discovered Starters, though I did see it on NetGalley a few weeks before that. But having listened to the chatter and then taking a look at the description made me so curious about this book with a cover that is hauntingly, eerily beautiful and somewhat disturbing.

And oooh that description. It makes this book sound seriously creepy and incredibly good, so of course I had to pre-order it. When I first saw the words “Spore Wars,” it made me think this was a fantasy type of novel. But reading on, it seems like something very different.

Between the neurochips, Prime Destinations – the facility in Beverly Hills that rents out bodies so that older people can feel young again – and some kind of an evil plan, this is one book that I’m already dying to find out more about.

I really, really hope that I can read this next month.

Scorched Skies by Samantha Young will be released in the U.S. in paperback format on March 16. The eBook is available now at Amazon.

Scorched Skies is the second book in the Fire Spirits series by author Samantha Young.

One of the seriously awesome things about self-published books is that the wait between releases in a series tends to be a bit shorter. Especially books by author Samantha Young, because she is a writing machine.

Scorched Skies, the second book in the Fire Spirits series already released in eBook format, but the paperback edition comes out this week. So, even though I have an eBook copy, I wanted to include it with this week’s releases since I hadn’t included it in last week’s post.

I am so excited to continue the story of the Ari, Jai and Charlie. The world that the author created of the Jinn (genies) is magical and alluring and exciting. And I’m incredibly nervous about what is to come in this second book in the series.

According to the description there are lives lost, Ari is being hunted and there is someone else for her to fear. I can’t wait to find out if Ari takes control of her powers and becomes the hunter instead of being the hunted and just what happens, if anything, with her and Jai… or Charlie.

And I absolutely can’t wait to find out what the White King is up to and to meet the new villain in this story, a dark sorcerer.

This sequel sounds totally epic and I can’t wait to read this (hopefully) next week.

Another awesome week full of amazing new releases. I don’t know how I am going to stay on track with my reads when there are just so many books releasing this week that I’m dying to dive into.

Maybe things will quiet down for the next couple of weeks… I hope… because there are quite a few books releasing in April and a ton of new books releasing in May that I’m more than anxious to devour. Though I have a feeling there are just a few more books full of win that will be releasing this month.

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

    The Extras: Teasers #9

There are so many amazing books out there – released or soon-to-be-released – that have certain passages that just captivate.

Here are just a few of those that caught my attention in the past month.

There were so many amazing passages to choose from in this book. But I actually had two favorites that just stuck in my mind for days afterward.

One is so unbelievably chest-tighteningly awesome, the other is kind of wicked. So, of course I chose the wicked one.

    Cole to Nikki:

He put his lips against my head. “Heroes don’t exist. And if they did, I wouldn’t be one of them.”

I found about twenty passages that would be just so perfect to tease. But some gave a little too much away. And others were just too awesome to reveal and would be better discovered while reading the book.

I have a completely different quote in my review, something much more lighthearted and fun. But I couldn’t resist teasing this passage, which is one of my very favorites.

Though to keep this a bit of a mystery I won’t say who the two characters are.

Her breath caught, and she dropped her hand from his shoulder. “It’s been a year,” she said quickly. “God knows you’ve moved on.”

He didn’t break her gaze. “God knows nothing.”

It was so difficult for me to tease a passage that kept things rated PG. Because most of my favorite passages were H.O.T.

And while I did find one passage that is deliciously perfect, it’s actually part of a much longer scene that is so unbelievably intense.

But this is only supposed to tease, so you’ll have to grab the book to find out just what comes next.

    Katy and Daemon:

Time seemed to slow, every second stretching out before me, tantalizing and torturing every breath I took. Waiting, wanting to show him whatever he was looking for as his eyes darkened to a deep green.

One of my most favorite non-spoilery passages was one at the very beginning. There are so many passages that would be perfect to tease in this post, but I thought I’d choose the one that stuck with me right from the start.

And of course it had to be about Will, because he is such an unbelievable tease.

    Tessa about Will:

Will was beautiful, but he was not hers; he was not anybody’s. Something in him was broken, and through that break spilled a blind cruelty, a need to hurt and to push away.

I was torn between choosing a teaser passage that was heartbreaking or one that was heartwarming. It was too tough to choose.

Instead I chose a passage that was just written so beautifully and is just so completely true.

    Graham’s thoughts:

Something about first love defies duplication. Before it, your heart is blank. Unwritten. After, the walls are left inscribed and graffitied. When it ends, no amount of scrubbing will purge the scrawled oaths and sketched images, but sooner or later, you find that there’s space for someone else, between the words and in the margins.

This is another book of the author’s with some wonderfully graphic, dark and disturbing passages. And some that are just so unbelievably sad.

It was surprisingly difficult to choose a favorite, but I think I found one that captures the spirit of this book perfectly.

    Alex’s thoughts:

As soon as reality breaks, as soon as we are separated from the physical world, the cracks begin to appear in our minds. And through them seeps the madness that has always been there, flowing into your skull like a liquid nightmare.

Choosing a favorite passage from this book was harder than I thought it would be. I included one with my review, but finding one that was a little different, but that didn’t give too much away, proved to be a challenge.

I finally managed to narrow it down to three. All of which were utterly hilarious. And one of which is below.

    Pearl about Evan:

He shifted the car into gear and peeled out. To her delight, he sped down the street at her favorite velocity: alarmingly fast. She upgraded her impression of him from “delicious breakfast” to “attractive lackey.” Too bad the Family didn’t keep lackeys.

I found an absolutely amazing passage to tease in my review. But I decided, instead of going for a passage that is all about the author’s beautiful writing, this time I’d tease something just a bit hotter.

As this is only supposed to tease, I end the passage just before the other character is revealed and just before things get even steamier.

    Ari and…

“No!” She tried to get loose. “You are not kissing me you big l-“

And quite abruptly her insult was swallowed in his kiss. His hot, deep kiss that shut down her brain and made her legs go like Jell-O. She felt a furious heat rush into her cheeks and swim downwards into the pit of her belly….”

I thought eight was just the right amount of books to tease. Not too many and not too few. If I was all about the spoilers those teasers would be far more tormenting than what I’ve included, so I haven’t been too evil, have I?

Though I have to admit, reading those teasers just now makes me want to re-read all these books again.

    The Crush List #5

Here are a few books that I’m crushing on big time

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi is a new and very delicate crush. It’s a crush that’s bordering on heartbreak. Not because the book itself made me break down, but the main character and the writing are what tore me apart. And I just know already that this will be a book, and possibly a series, that in time lands on Heartbreak Row.

I’ve read it twice and would have loved to read it again if I had just a little more time. But I also need to breathe and the weight that presses against my chest every time my eyes absorb the beauty of the writing is a pain I just can’t suffer at the moment.

Why I’m crushing: Breathtakingly, achingly beautiful writing. A vulnerable, fragile and broken heroine. A boy who is absolutely everything a boy should be. A love story. An action story. A dangerous world. A sympathetic, totally hot villain. One incredibly steamy, sexy scene. And a perfect ending that leaves you desperate for more.

Lockdown by Alexander Gordon Smith is a semi-new crush. The book may have come out awhile ago, but I just discovered it recently and can’t stop thinking about it. Still. Nearly one month after reading it.

The cover completely freaked me out. The trailer gave me chills. I did not expect to crush on a book that had me that creeped out before I even started it, but I did crush. I’m still crushing. Big time. For a book without a love story. A book without a hot guy. And a book and series without any real chance at happily ever after.

Why I’m crushing: It’s dark. It’s disturbing. It’s edge-of-your-seat exciting. It’s horrifying, chilling and grotesque at times. The blood watch. The black suits. The Warden. The dogs. And most of all the wheezers. Can’t forget them. Even if I want to. And I really want to.

Smokeless Fire by Samantha Young is a brand new crush and one I wasn’t expecting. I love the author’s writing and have a major crush on her book Slumber, but I was not prepared to fall for a book about genies or Jinn.

I had serious cover love for this book, which alone would make this crush-worthy. But I never imagined that I would like, let alone crush on, a story about beings quite as exotic, or as evil, as Jinn. And yet, before I even got one-third of the way through, I was completely crushed.

Why I’m crushing: Enchanting worlds. Magical, unique, intriguing abilities. Dark and dangerous enemies. Hidden agendas. Secrets. Not one but two scrumptious boys to choose from. A heroine that can kick some serious a**. And an ending that will leave you hanging in the best possible way.

Solitary by Alexander Gordon Smith is another new crush and one that I was hoping to crush on. I couldn’t just stop after reading Lockdown, even though I had absolutely no room for this on the pile.

Any fear I had of the crush fizzling out quickly changed over to a fear of solitary confinement and just what was coming after Alex in his pitch dark, cramped cell.

Why I’m crushing: Riveting, nail-biting, chilling and macabre. Even Darker. Definitely scarier. So much more grotesque. Confinement and isolation. Experiments gone wrong. The dogs. The black suits. The wheezers. The warden. The rats. The infirmary. The incinerator. And one very dangerous cliff to be left hanging from.

Drink, Slay, Love by Sarah Beth Durst is my very latest crush. What started out as a cover and title crush grew, with every page I turned, into a full-blown crush by the middle of the book.

I never imagined I’d add this to my crush list. Not with the premise being that a vampire was staked by a unicorn and somehow became more human because of it. But it turned out, in part, that the premise was the very reason this became a crush-worthy book for me. And while I may not have had an insta-crush, I have a seriously big-time crush now.

Why I’m crushing: Cold, cruel, calculating vampires. Enough sarcasm and humor to make you LOL. And LOL again. A vampire with a taste for ice-cream flavored blood. A bad-a** heroine who grows a conscience. An arrogant, super sexy vampire boyfriend with a big mouth. And one absolutely delicious, drool-worthy, slightly stalker-y boy.

I have one new book I am seriously crushing on, but because my review has not yet been posted, I thought I’d save it for Crush List #6. And I’m thrilled about the fact that two of my five crushes are on some of the most horrifying young adult books I’ve ever read.

While I didn’t get to list one of my long-term crushes, I’m so glad I finally got to add a vampire book to the crush list this month. Even if most of those vamps themselves were more creepy than crush-worthy.

    Do you crush on books?

What makes a book crushworthy for you?
