    BK_Week8

    The end is near…

We are more than halfway through the final book in the Fire and Thorns series and there’s only one week left in the read-along and only just over a week until WALK ON EARTH A STRANGER releases. (Can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait!)

This week we read chapters fifteen through twenty-eight of THE BITTER KINGDOM – though I have to admit that after last week’s chapters I kept on reading and finished this incredibly amazing book and series. But I promise to only talk about the assigned chapters this week.

    Anyway…

If you’re only just now learning about the read-along, feel free to check out Week One’s post for more info and my thoughts about the first 11 chapters of THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS (HERE). And my thoughts on Chapters 12-23 are HERE and Chapters 24-34 are HERE. If you’d like to know what I thought about the first 10 chapters of THE CROWN OF EMBERS, you can find out HERE, Chapters 11-20 HERE and Chapters 21-30 HERE. And if you want to know what I thought about Chapters 1-14 of THE BITTER KINGDOM, you can find out HERE.

We are reading all three books in the Fire and Thorns series leading up to the release of WALK ON EARTH A STRANGER, which comes out on September 22nd. And let me just tell you it’s every bit as amazing as I’d hoped it would be. I can’t wait until everyone gets the chance to read it. Yay for the wait being almost over!

    And now for my thoughts….

    The Read-Along: Chapters 15-28

***Spoiler Alert: There are a few general plot spoilers in this post. ***

The first fourteen chapters of THE BITTER KINGDOM were intense. These next fourteen chapters were insane.

The chance to save Hector presents itself and Elisa and company spring into action. In order to free him they’ll have to go up against Franco and in doing so one of them is gravely injured. And no, I’m not going to reveal who it is or exactly what happened during the battle. I can’t reveal everything. Something has to be discovered by reading the book. It’s so much better that way. Anyway…

Part I ends with the plan to head to Invierne and if all goes well try to bargain for peace. Part II takes everyone to Invierne where they get to see how the Inviernos live, meet Storm’s family, and find out if the rumor they heard – the one I hinted about last week – is true.

All does not go according to plan. Complications arise. Elisa is imprisoned, and unless her friends can find her and save her or she can find a way to free herself, she may end up becoming the sacrifice that the Inviernos want her to be.

And while all of this is happening, eight of the rulers of Invierne have left to attack Basajuan.

As I don’t want to reveal too much more of what goes down in these fourteen chapters of the final book in the series, I will just say that there is another journey through environments that have not yet been traversed in this series. And as Part III begins we will learn about another deadly obstacle to the team’s survival.

One of the things I love so much about this series is the exploration of the different parts of the world. Each journey is different. We get to meet all sorts of different characters with different customs and there are different challenges that Elisa has to face and overcome. I have been fascinated and riveted with each journey and each new environment we are introduced to.

And the new landscapes in THE BITTER KINGDOM are awesome additions, making this particular part of the read unputdownable. Of course Hector may have had something to do with that too….

Rae Carson Read-Along: THE BITTER KINGDOM Chapters 1-14 + Giveaway

    BK_Week7

    We’re back…

And we’re starting the last book in the Fire and Thorns series.

This week’s read was for the first fourteen chapters of THE BITTER KINGDOM. And I was worried I might not get the chance to read all fourteen in time for the read along given the holiday weekend. But once I started I couldn’t stop. The pages flew. The chapters flew. And when I reached the end of what I was required to read I had plenty of time to organize my thoughts and write my post.

But of course that’s not what I did. I just had to peek ahead. And while I swore to myself it would be just that one chapter, after reading chapter fifteen there was no way I was able to stop. Not until I absolutely had to in order to write my post. But there is no way I’m going to wait for two more weeks to finish this book and series. No way.

Last week I said that fourteen chapters wouldn’t be enough. And it wasn’t. Neither was twenty-eight.

And so that you don’t have to look back at earlier posts, to quickly recap…

    The Read-Along: Chapters 1-14

***Spoiler Alert: There are a few general plot spoilers in this post. ***

The first fourteen chapters in THE BITTER KINGDOM are lightning fast. And there is a bit of a surprise – every once in awhile there is a chapter told from Hector’s POV! It’s all sorts of awesome to get a peek at what’s going on with him and to know what he’s thinking, even though it majorly adds to the tension and suspense.

This third and final full-length book in the series starts off with Elisa, Mara, Storm and Belén racing to catch up with Franco, the Inviernos, the traitorous Joyans, and Hector. They’re forced to steal horses if they even hope to catch up, and Elisa hatches a clever plot, using Storm, to aid in their thievery.

We learn from Hector that he’s being guarded by twenty men, that he’s going to try and do everything he can to slow them down, and that he hasn’t revealed anything to them. We also learn that the Inviernos know about something Elisa does not, something that turns out to be pretty important. Something I will not spoil here.

The acquisition of the horses helps to speed up their travels and Elisa and company are definitely gaining on Franco’s group. Elisa discusses an alternate plan with Storm for what will happen if they don’t free Hector, have to enter Intervierne, and their original plan fails.

And she begins to suspect there’s more to the story about the Inviernos’ history. But with time running out for her group to save Hector, she doesn’t get the time to think more about it.

A new member joins their team, one who proves to be quite helpful and loyal and adorable. Elisa starts to – very slowly – see that horses aren’t the vicious, evil creatures she’d thought them to be. She even starts to warm up to her horse just a bit.

And once they’re in the mountains, she and Storm start practicing with their Godstones to see if their quest to find the zafira imbued them with power.

While they’re trying to find ways to defeat Hector’s captors, Hector discovers a way to slow Franco and his men down. And in the process he manages to plant a seed of doubt that might cause a rift that could increase the odds if either he tried to escape or if Elisa tracked him down.

The first fourteen chapters in this final book in the series were totally captivating and action-filled and suspenseful. Every single moment had me wishing for Hector’s safety, fearing for Elisa’s, and worrying about the what will happen in Invierne.

And the ending of chapter fourteen was killer. It was a Hector POV chapter, and what happened at the end of the chapter ensured that I would not wait another moment to continue reading. And I didn’t. And I’m glad I didn’t. Though I am so very tempted to read all the way to the end of this book right now.

Rae Carson Read-Along: THE CROWN OF EMBERS Chapters 21-30 + Giveaway

    CE_Week6

    It’s that time again…

This past week we read the last ten chapters of THE CROWN OF EMBERS and I am so excited to have finally discovered what happened in the twenty-two percent of this book that I hadn’t already read. It’s been a long time in coming but the wait was so worth it.

It was epic. Phenomenal. And if I had read it in its entirety when it was released and had to wait an entire year for the last book in the series, I would have died. The wait would have killed me. No joke.

And I really want to keep reading. Like right now. But I just know that if I start, I won’t be able to stop. So I’m going to try and wait a few days before diving in to the next set of chapters in THE BITTER KINGDOM. At least we’ll get to read fourteen chapters. Though that won’t be nearly enough.

    And now for my thoughts….

    The Read-Along: Chapters 21-30

***Spoiler Alert: There are a few general plot spoilers in this post. ***

And I thought last week’s chapters were nail-biting and epic and amazing. They were tame compared with this week’s chapters.

The danger increases. The threats grow. The tension builds. The adventure becomes more exciting, suspenseful, riveting. Every. Single. Week.

In these final ten chapters of THE CROWN OF EMBERS there’s a voyage at sea which is more risky than anyone would have imagined. The ship’s captain turns out to be quite the surprise. Elisa has become rather good at striking bargains. A few of Hector’s personal details are revealed – about who he is, what he gave up to be Elisa’s Royal Guard. And the possibility arises for Elisa and Hector to become more…. (At which point I was hoping, begging, pleading for this to be so.)

Searching for the zafira requires tests of faith, and the hurricane and tornado at sea prove to be quite the tests for Elisa, the ship, the ship’s captain and crew, her traveling companions. But in the midst of the storm and in its aftermath, statements are made, feelings are revealed, feelings are acted upon… somewhat.

The quest continues, what’s sought is found. But there is a price. And Elisa has a choice to make.

Then, as the quest comes to an end and the story winds down, friends are reunited, the plots against Elisa are uncovered, and a hostage is taken – setting things up for the final book in the series. Which I can only imagine will be that much more epic, nerve-wracking, heartbreaking, deadly.

I am so glad that I joined in this read-along. I should have finished this series the day after the last book was released. But as I can’t turn back time and make that happen, I will make it happen in the next few weeks.

This series is so freaking awesome. And THE CROWN OF EMBERS, had I reviewed it, would have totally received my six-star off-the-menu rating. Yeah it is just that spectacular.

Rae Carson Read-Along: THE CROWN OF EMBERS Chapters 11-20 + Giveaway

    CE_Week5

    It’s that time again…

It’s only been a week but oh my gosh trying NOT to read ahead is killing me. THE CROWN OF EMBERS is every bit as awesome as I remembered it being, though I’m almost (finally) at the point in the story where it will all be new to me. And I’m dying to read ahead.

But I’m really trying to stick with the schedule. So I stopped where I’m supposed to, though I will be picking it up the minute I’m done writing this post. Anyway…

If you’re only just now learning about the read-along, feel free to check out Week One’s post for more info and my thoughts about the first 11 chapters of THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS (HERE). And now for my thoughts….

    The Read-Along: Chapters 11-20

***Spoiler Alert: There are a few general plot spoilers in this post. ***

I really didn’t think things could get more nail-biting than they already were, but they so totally did.

A punishment is meted out. That spark that was ignited has become a blaze. Elisa gets some private lessons in self defense. Conde Eduardo pressures her for details about her prison visit. An assassination attempt results in a mortally wounded Commander of the Royal Guard. Elisa learns a few new things about her powers and the Godstone. She discovers a secret (finally) about Conde Tristán that she is able to use to her advantage.

A new quest is begun, one that is fraught with danger. Deception after deception is necessary for Elisa’s survival. Forgiveness and trust are also required if Elisa is to survive the journey. A late night siege by an Invierne spy forces the group to split up, leaving Elisa and those remaining with her wondering what will become of those they left behind.

With all that has happened, and the danger that Elisa is currently facing, stopping at the end of Chapter 20 was not easy. Especially as it would be just so much better simpler to keep reading and find out whether Elisa discovers what she’s looking for, find out whether she is reunited with Ximena and Tristán, find out whether that thing that happened in the sewer (yeah, I promise it’s not as gross as it sounds – not even close, actually) happens again, find out whether she is strong enough to be a Queen and give up what she most desires. (I hope she is but I hope she doesn’t.)

Yeah, this read-along is KILLING ME! I just hope I don’t combust before finding out what happens at the very end of this series. Finally.

    And now for my thoughts….

    The Read-Along: Chapters 24-34

***Spoiler Alert: There are a few general plot spoilers in this post. ***

These last eleven chapters were INTENSE! And heartbreaking. And epic. And nail-biting. And if I give the play-by-play like I’ve done for the previous chapters, I will end up spoiling the ending. Which I don’t want to do. So I’m going to be a bit more vague this time.

But there is a plan to journey to Basajuan to see if the proposed alliance is a trick or if it’s real. Things do not go as planned and while there are some unexpected saviors, not everyone makes it out safely. [Pause for tears.]

Elisa learns more about the animagi and their plans for the Godstone – her Godstone. While taking down one of them may have saved her, it also made her a target. Because now the enemy knows she’s the bearer and has what they need.

Part III takes readers back to Brisadulce as the war with Invierne is headed to Joya D’Arena. With five animagi leading the way, the chance for success is slim, unless Elisa can figure out a way to harness the power of the Godstone to counter their sorcery.

A puzzle needs to be solved and the hidden Godstones need to be found. If not, all of Joya D’Arena will be lost and Elisa, the King, and Rosario will have to flee. But which of those possible outcomes actually happens is not something I’m going to reveal.

I will say that there is a journey, a coronation, a reunion or two. There are unexpected heroes. Promises made will be honored. There is plenty of action. There is bloodshed. Lives are lost. There will be tears.

And while some questions do remain, things wrap up nicely, making for a very satisfying versus cliff-hanger-y – albeit heartrending – end.

    Elisa is a fugitive.

Her enemies have stolen the man she loves, and they await her at the gate of darkness. Her country is on the brink of civil war, with her own soldiers ordered to kill her on sight.

Her Royal Majesty, Queen Lucero-Elisa né Riqueza de Vega, bearer of the Godstone, will lead her three loyal companions deep into the enemy’s kingdom, a land of ice and snow and brutal magic, to rescue Hector and win back her throne. Her power grows with every step, and the shocking secrets she will uncover on this, her final journey, could change the course of history.
