With the Republic edging closer to chaos, the two join a group of Patriot rebels eager to help Day rescue his brother and offer passage to the Colonies. They have only one request—June and Day must assassinate the new Elector.

It’s their chance to change the nation, to give voice to a people silenced for too long.

But as June realizes this Elector is nothing like his father, she’s haunted by the choice ahead. What if Anden is a new beginning? What if revolution must be more than loss and vengeance, anger and blood—what if the Patriots are wrong?

    About Marie Lu

    Marie Lu

Marie Lu was born in China in 1984 (perhaps a sign of dystopian stories to come), and moved from Beijing to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in the same year the Tiananmen Square massacre happened. Eventually she and her parents settled down in Sugar Land, Texas—which she still considers her hometown.

She finished her first novel when she was 15 years old, but it took her second manuscript to acquire a literary agent. When that one didn’t sell either, she went off to college in Los Angeles and wrote two more manuscripts. Although those still didn’t sell, one of them did get her the amazing literary agent Kristin Nelson, who sold her fifth manuscript, the dystopian young adult novel LEGEND, to Putnam Children’s/Penguin USA at auction in a major deal. LEGEND was released on November 29, 2011 as Putnam Children’s and Penguin Young Readers Group’s lead title. LEGEND is Marie’s debut novel.

Marie graduated in 2006 from USC and currently resides in Los Angeles, where she spends her time stuck in traffic.

Frozen Blog Tour: Michael Johnston Guest Post + Giveaway

    FrozenBT2

    From the publisher…

Welcome to the Frozen blog tour! We at Penguin are thrilled to introduce the first book in the Heart of Dread series by Melissa de la Cruz and Michael Johnston. Follow along on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for the next three weeks as Mel and Mike share their thoughts on everything from the end of the world to romantic partnerships they love (other than their own, of course!).

I couldn’t be more excited than I am right now to be a part of the FROZEN Blog Tour. I’ve long been a fan of Melissa de la Cruz and her Blue Bloods series and now, after reading today’s guest post, I am an official fan of her husband Michael Johnston.

I don’t think I could have been given a more perfect post for the blog. Ever since I was a child I have been in love with Frank Herbert’s Dune books. While I may have read them when I was a few years younger than the author was, I was just as affected by them and became very aware of water waste because of those books.

Knowing the author’s mindset as he wrote FROZEN has definitely changed  how I’m looking at the story as I read it. Which reminds me, I want to get back to doing just that, so let me turn the blog over to Author Michael Johnston.

Oh, and if you’d like to read a little bit more about the authors and their love of fantasy and all things DUNE, check out this article on The Huffington Post.

    Guest Post
    Everyday Conservation

    by Michael Johnston

I first read Frank Herbert’s Dune in the summer after sixth grade. His story of a planet bereft of water had a huge effect on me. For years I made certain to turn off the faucet while putting soap on my hands or toothpaste on the brush. The effect faded after a few years, but never disappeared. I still feel a twitch when I see a running faucet, thinking of the stillsuits worn by the Fremen. Their suits recycled the human body’s moisture—all of the human’s body’s moisture—nothing was wasted. They collected water from the wind, from the dead, and from their own bodies. They considered tears and spit wasteful. Fremen conservation may seem a bit overboard, but it illustrated Herbert’s point wonderfully: water is precious—we shouldn’t waste it.

I wrote FROZEN in a similar mindset. There is no explicit message, I don’t tell the reader what to think about a particular issue, but when they read the novel, when the reader observes our characters, Nat and Wes, stumbling through garbage country, or navigating the trashberg-infested ocean, I hope they feel a little bit like I did when I read Dune. I hope it makes them think twice about the little things. That’s why we read, to think more deeply about our everyday habits.

    About FROZEN

From New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz and Michael Johnston comes this remarkable first book in a spellbinding new series about the dawn of a new kind of magic.

Welcome to New Vegas, a city once covered in bling, now blanketed in ice. Like much of the destroyed planet, the place knows only one temperature—freezing. But some things never change. The diamond in the ice desert is still a 24-hour hedonistic playground and nothing keeps the crowds away from the casino floors, never mind the rumors about sinister sorcery in its shadows.

At the heart of this city is Natasha Kestal, a young blackjack dealer looking for a way out. Like many, she’s heard of a mythical land simply called “the Blue.” They say it’s a paradise, where the sun still shines and the waters are turquoise. More importantly, it’s a place where Nat won’t be persecuted, even if her darkest secret comes to light.

But passage to the Blue is treacherous, if not impossible, and her only shot is to bet on a ragtag crew of mercenaries led by a cocky runner named Ryan Wesson there. Danger and deceit await on every corner, even as Nat and Wes find themselves inexorably drawn to each other. But can true love survive the lies? Fiery hearts collide in this fantastic tale of the evil men do and the awesome power within us all.

    Cover Reveal: Wings + Giveaway

    Wings Cover

WINGS (Black City #3) by Elizabeth Richards

    addtogoodreads

I was so super stoked when I saw the email from Good Choice Reading Blog Tours to participate in the reveal for the third book in the Black City trilogy by Elizabeth Richards. I absolutely loved the covers for the first two books in the series – BLACK CITY’s cover was my favorite – and I couldn’t wait to see what the cover for this third and final book in the series looked like.

Each of the covers are amazing and have a connection with the story. So, sight unseen I signed up for this reveal. And…

    My Thoughts

This is my favorite cover in the series. It is absolutely gorgeous. There is not one thing I don’t love about this cover.

It ties in perfectly with the other two covers. The fonts are bold and the text layout is exactly that of PHOENIX’s cover. The image, with its form of destruction, is much more similar to that of BLACK CITY’s cover.

And both its and BLACK CITY’s cooler tones make them the perfect bookends to the much warmer tones and softer look of PHOENIX’s cover with its golden backdrop and burning orangey-red feather.

As someone who loves these particular shades of blue, I think the colors used for this cover are so pretty and incredibly visually appealing. And even though I’m not particularly fond of butterflies, I can’t help but love this one. The image makes such a statement. It’s strong but also fragile and breakable.

But most of all, this cover makes me so curious as to what it means for the final book in the series. As the book’s description is not yet posted on Goodreads, and it’s not yet viewable at Amazon or Barnes & Noble, I have no idea what is in story for Ash and Natalie in this final installment.

With a cover like this, I know it’s going to be awesome. And seeing it has made me that much more anxious for the next book in the series, which I hope is coming sooner in 2014 rather than later.

    Other Books in the Series

    Black City

    BLACK CITY (Black City #1)

    Released November 13, 2012

A dark and tender post-apocalyptic love story set in the aftermath of a bloody war.

In a city where humans and Darklings are now separated by a high wall and tensions between the two races still simmer after a terrible war, sixteen-year-olds Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling, and Natalie Buchanan, a human and the daughter of the Emissary, meet and do the unthinkable—they fall in love. Bonded by a mysterious connection that causes Ash’s long-dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they’re caught, they’ll be executed—but their feelings are too strong.

When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths.

    Phoenix

    PHOENIX (Black City #2)

    Released June 4, 2013

Ash and Natalie are just starting to build a life together when things in the United Sentry States go from bad to worse. Ash and Natalie find themselves at the center of turmoil when dictator Purian Rose threatens Natalie’s life unless Ash votes in favor of Rose’s Law—a law that will send Darklings and other dissenters to a deadly concentration camp known as the Tenth.

When Ash can’t bring himself to trade Natalie’s life for those of millions of Darklings, her fate is sealed. Enter Elijah Theroux, the handsome Bastet boy Natalie once saved from her mother’s labs, where he’d been experimented on and tortured. It was his venom the Sentry used to create the lethal Golden Haze, the heart of the government conspiracy that led to Black City’s uprising and Ash’s rebirth as the Phoenix, the face of the rebellion. Elijah is back and Ash doesn’t like him; it’s clear he’s taken with Natalie, and Ash fears she may have feelings for him as well.

But Elijah also may have the answer to taking down Purian Rose for good—a powerful weapon called the Ora. Ash, Natalie and Elijah just have to escape Black City undetected to find it. But fleeing the city and finding this weapon (if it even exists) are easier said than done, and the quest could tear Ash and Natalie apart, even pushing them into the arms of others.

This enthralling sequel to Black City is just as absorbing, delicious and steamy as the first book, leaving readers hungry for the series conclusion.

    Giveaway: Star Cursed

    Star Cursed Cover

    addtogoodreads

I am so unbelievably excited that today is the release day for STAR CURSED by Jessica Spotswood. I was only just recently introduced to the series and its characters, but it is now one of my very most favorites. I already cannot wait for the third book in this series to be released. And as I have no idea when it’s slated for release, the wait is going to be torturous.

I absolutely adore Cate Cahill and her sister Tess. I’m in love with the world. And I more than a little bit fond of Finn. The writing is gorgeous, the story is magical and the ending is…. Oops, I think I’ve said enough about that.

As I thought this book was more than amazing – I gave it my off-the-menu rating in my review – I wanted to offer up a couple copies for giveaway. And so that’s what I’m doing.

For those who haven’t yet read the description for this second book in the Cahill Witch Chronicles, I’ve included it below. Though, if you haven’t read BORN WICKED, you may want to skip right to the giveaway as it does contain some mild spoilers for that book.

    Line_001

    STAR CURSED Description…

With the Brotherhood persecuting witches like never before, a divided Sisterhood desperately needs Cate to come into her Prophesied powers. And after Cate’s friend Sachi is arrested for using magic, a war-thirsty Sister offers to help her find answers—if Cate is willing to endanger everyone she loves.

Cate doesn’t want to be a weapon, and she doesn’t want to involve her friends and Finn in the Sisterhood’s schemes. But when Maura and Tess join the Sisterhood, Maura makes it clear that she’ll do whatever it takes to lead the witches to victory. Even if it means sacrifices. Even if it means overthrowing Cate. Even if it means all-out war.

In the highly anticipated sequel to Born Wicked, the Cahill Witch Chronicles continue Cate, Maura and Tess’s quest to find love, protect family, and explore their magic against all odds in an alternate history of New England.

STAR CURSED is the the incredibly exciting, suspenseful, heartbreaking and utterly riveting second book in author Jessica Spotswood’s Cahill Witch Chronicles. It engages readers from the very first line, returning them to the author’s world of witchcraft and magic and to those who wish to destroy it, those who wish to keep it secret and those who are willing to go to war for it.

New characters are introduced, many existing characters return, there is a new setting to discover and layers have been added to the plot, the characters, the world. And with a story that delivers action and betrayal, a quick pace, an intriguing plot, compelling characters and a tension-filled build-up to a shocking conclusion, this second installment takes this series to the next level.

Talk of a new oracle has made the Brotherhood even more ruthless in their efforts to uncover and eradicate the witches. With more and more innocent girls being imprisoned, harsher restrictions being enforced and life becoming even more intolerable under their rule, there are those who are no longer willing to stand quietly by and just let it happen. There are even those ready to take action.

As tensions mount and as the Brothers’ desperation increases, even the Sisterhood comes under suspicion, creating dissension between those who wish to go to battle and those who want to find a less dangerous course of action. But with it still unclear as to who the most powerful witch of the prophecy is, going to war would put the Sisters at great risk. A risk that if they were to take and lose, could mean their end.

And if Cate Cahill is the prophesied witch, she’ll have to choose sides, she’ll have to be willing to step into the role of leader and she’ll have to make sacrifices, even ones that could cost her everything.

Author Jessica Spotswood has followed-up her enchanting first book in the series with one that is just as magical but offers up an even more engaging, more suspenseful, more exciting and more heart-wrenching storyline. She has allowed readers to get to know her main character, Cate Cahill, along with a few of the supporting characters, even better. And she’s given readers even more reason to like or dislike them, trust or distrust them, sympathize with them, empathize with them or feel disdain toward them.

Readers with high expectations for this sequel will not be disappointed, it does not suffer from sophomore slump. The plot is more danger-filled, more complex. The love story more swoon-worthy, heartwarming, heartbreaking. The betrayal far more devastating. The build to the conclusion more nerve-wracking, more climactic. And the ending more surprising, more shocking, more heart-stopping.

All of which makes STAR CURSED a must read addition to the series.

Like In-N-Out Burger‘s infamous secret menu this one deserves my off-the-menu 6 star rating.

    On a personal note…

Oh. My. Gosh. I don’t even know where to begin. This book was so out-of-this-world good that there are no words to describe… okay, maybe there are a few words… maybe more than few.

But I think I have to begin at the end. Because that ending did kill me. I thought the ending for the first book in the series was torturous. But that was nothing compared to the ending for STAR CURSED. Nothing.

I mean, I knew something was going to happen. I may have suspected that something just like what happened would happen. The author teased, warned, foreshadowed, hinted, that something was going to happen. But it made it no less torturous. Knife to the heart.

And now I have to wait. A long time. I don’t have the next book in the series in hand. I don’t have any idea when it’s going to be released. STAR CURSED isn’t even out yet. And I’m just dying after what happened right there at the end.

But that wasn’t all that killed me. There was the build-up to the end. Talk about climactic. At some point during the read I started anticipating the “bad thing.” And the build-up filled me with fluttery nerves, nervous anticipation, angst.

I did end up setting the book down so that I wouldn’t have to reach that moment quite so quickly. But I couldn’t set it aside for long. Because as much as I didn’t want to have my heart broken, I just had to know. And now that I know, I want to pretend that I don’t, so that the next three hundred sixty-five and change days will pass that much more quickly.

If it were just the end and the build-up to the end, this story would have been awesome but it wouldn’t be one of the books that I consider off-the-charts. And this book is definitely one of those books that blew me away.

Before the build-up there was all that stuff in the middle and at the beginning. Stuff that made this story the amazing and compelling book it was. Stuff that kept me riveted. Stuff I’d really love to talk about in great detail, but I can’t. Because there is so much that’s so incredibly spoiler-y in this book. Talking about certain characters would be spoiler-y. Talking about certain character and storyline developments would be equally as revealing.

And I can’t even tease about the prophecy, the oracle, the visions. I can’t drop hints as to what happens with characters like Rory, Sachi, Brenna, Finn, Zara. I can’t reveal who I know to be trustworthy, who I know not to be and who I am still wary about.

I can’t talk about just what Maura gets up to. Whether she’s a character I now love or whether she’s one I loathe.

But maybe, just maybe, I can talk about Cate. Who was even more amazing in this book than she was in the last. She was every bit as compassionate and thoughtful. She was just as caring. But she was a little more decisive, a little more sure of herself and her abilities. And she wasn’t as afraid to take the lead when she needed to.

Things did not get any easier for Cate in this sequel. Things actually got quite a bit more difficult. Between what had happened to her in that first book to what was expected of her in this one, Cate had a lot to deal with. And that doesn’t even take into account the increased threat from the Brotherhood, the dissension within the Sisterhood or the fact that a wrong decision could very possibly be a deadly one.

And while I really, really want to talk about the choices she’ll have to make, the risks she’ll have to take, the side she ends up choosing and the allies that stand with her, I can’t. And I probably shouldn’t say anything more, except….

While I anticipated the author’s gorgeous writing, her lovable characters and the amazing world she created, she still managed to surprise me with her sequel. STAR CURSED is so much more suspenseful than its predecessor, there is quite a bit of action packed into the story, the betrayal goes so much deeper, the plot is far more complex. And the ending… shocking, heartbreaking, torturous to the nth degree.

And I just know the next book is going to be epic.

    Goodreads Description…

Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are eccentric. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated for their own good. But the truth is even worse: they’re witches. And if their secret is discovered by the priests of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship—or an early grave.

Before her mother died, Cate promised to protect her sisters. But with only six months left to choose between marriage and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word… especially after she finds her mother’s diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family’s destruction. Desperate to find alternatives to their fate, Cate starts scouring banned books and questioning rebellious new friends, all while juggling tea parties, shocking marriage proposals, and a forbidden romance with the completely unsuitable Finn Belastra.

If what her mother wrote is true, the Cahill girls aren’t safe. Not from the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood—not even from each other.

Author Jessica Spotswood’s BORN WICKED is a beautifully written, incredibly engaging and simply magical read. It’s a story that, while fictional, addresses very real issues from  our history – the fear of witchcraft, the oppression of women and girls, the suppression of knowledge and freedom of speech, opinion, expression.

It’s a story that captivates with not only its interesting characters, their relationships, their motivations and their beliefs, but its mystery, its magic, its suspenseful storyline. And it’s a story that will keep readers guessing right up to its climactic conclusion.

Under the guise of keeping everyone safe from the threat of witches and witchcraft, the priests of the Brotherhood have established a dictatorial rule. One that is overly restrictive, unforgiving and deadly for those in opposition.

Which makes it even more important for no one to find out about the secret Catherine Cahill and her sisters are keeping – that they are witches, possibly even the prophesied ones. But with one sister who is curious about her abilities and another who can’t seem to control them, hiding who and what they are is becoming even more of a challenge.

And with time running out for Cate to decide on her future, one that will mean leaving her sisters behind, she’ll need to figure out a way to keep their secret safe, keep them hidden from the Brothers and keep them from drawing the attention of the Sisters. Because if they are the three sisters from the prophecy, then the danger to all of them will be greater than ever and will be deadly for one of them.

Cate Cahill is an incredibly likable and relatable main character. She’s been cast into the role of protector, forced to make sacrifices, and is faced with difficult decisions. Decisions that will either take her away from her home and family, leave her sisters unprotected, leave her heartbroken or break someone else’s heart.

She is compassionate and thoughtful, but not perfect. She is pretty but not the most beautiful of her sisters, smart but not the most clever. But her ability to see the good in people and recognize her own faults makes her endearing and makes her a character readers will want to know more about.

BORN WICKED is a breath of fresh air and an absolutely wonderful addition to the genre. It’s exciting, it’s surprising and it’s intelligent. With its diversity in its character archetypes, its nod to events in history and its atypical heroine and hero, this story stands out from the crowd.

And with its build up to a shocking finish, which will leave readers anxiously awaiting the sequel, BORN WICKED is an absolute must read first book in the series.

    On a personal note…

BORN WICKED may be a story of witches. But it’s no ordinary tale of witchcraft and spellcasting. And the witches are anything but ordinary.

I am not someone who gravitates toward books about witchcraft. And I’m definitely not someone who reads many books of witches around the turn of the century… the twentieth century, that is.

But from the moment I started reading BORN WICKED I was in love. With the main character, Cate Cahill, with the setting, with the world. Even though it was dark, oppressive, scary. Though I kind of think that’s exactly why I fell in love.

I couldn’t wait to learn more about the witchcraft and the prophecy the story talks of. I instantly wondered whether Cate was “the one” and if she was, what would happen to her, to her sisters. And if it wasn’t her but someone she cared about, I wondered what would she do to protect them.

There is something really beautiful about the writing and the way the story flows. Something magical. It took me surprise. I did not expect to love it as much as I did, given that it wasn’t one of my “go to” genres, given that it wasn’t a story with a lightning-fast pace, given that there were no deadly battles.

And yet the pages just flew by. The story held me captive. Cate’s predicament made me anxious. The Brothers made me angry. The Sisters made me wary. And Cate’s sister Maura made me want to throttle her.

I questioned everything. And everyone. Everyone was suspect. From Paul to Maura to Mrs. Corbett, to Sister Elena, to Sachi, to Rory. I didn’t know who could be trusted. Except maybe Finn and Tess. And even then, I wasn’t sure they wouldn’t betray Cate.

I didn’t know what anyone’s motives were. Except maybe the Brothers. Their motives seemed pretty obvious. I didn’t know when the “bad thing” would happen. The one that I just knew would happen. I didn’t even know what that “bad thing” would be. Which made this more than a little bit of a nail-biter.

Reading BORN WICKED was the perfect escape. The world was one I could easily imagine the characters in. It was one I was easily transported to. And it was one I didn’t want to leave.

Especially after that ending. Which was killer. Which would have killed me if I didn’t have the next book in the series to dive into immediately. I may have uttered a few expletives after reading that ending. Though I knew… I just knew… that something like that would happen.

While this book was such an amazing surprise, what was even more surprising was Finn. He’s not the typical character I would root for. Paul fits that description. But it was Finn that stole my heart. He was the good guy – sweet, rumpled, studious. And yet he was it for me.

But I won’t say whether he was the boy for Cate, if Paul was more to her liking or if someone or something else held more of an appeal. Because that would be spoiler-y. And I don’t do spoilers.

BORN WICKED has been one of my favorite reads this year. And if magic were real, I’d say this story cast its spell on me. I was bewitched, enchanted, spellbound.

    Favorite passage…

I actually had two clear favorites. One I would have loved to include but it is somewhat spoiler-y. So I’ve chosen to share my other favorite, which is rather scandalous given the time period.

I knot my fingers in his hair and pull his mouth back to mine.

His hands move over me, light as feathers, stroking my back, my hip. Tangling in the sash around my waist, anchoring me tighter against him. My body burns wherever he touches.
