    Description…

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

    The Review

THE YOUNG ELITES is an amazing and incredibly exciting start to this new series by Author Marie Lu. The world is fascinating, the story is darkly alluring, the characters are intriguing and dangerous and fierce. It is riveting. It delivers the unexpected. It is guaranteed to make you eager to dive into the next installment in the series. It is a thrilling and imaginative and immensely entertaining read.

The blood fever left Adelina Amouteru disfigured, branding her a malfetto, making her an outcast, someone to be despised, someone to be feared. Even more so after the rumors began to circulate of the existence of malfettos with extraordinary abilities.

Yet, no matter how fearsome they were rumored to be, these gifted malfettos were deemed valuable. So much so that her father hoped to be able to capitalize on that value. But no matter how hard he pushed her, or how cruel to her he was, Adelina could not call upon any powers. She felt a darkness growing within her, but no gifts emerged. She was not exceptional. She was not one of the Young Elites.

Or so she thought, until she was caught attempting to flee the future her father arranged for her. Because she didn’t just imagine the shadows that struck fear in her father’s heart, she created them.

Marie Lu created a world that is governed by fear, where those who are different are ostracized, targeted for violence, used to further the agenda of a power-hungry queen and a zealot of an inquisitor. She introduced characters who range from anti-hero to villain and gave them abilities that enable them to dispense dark justice, create chaos, inflict pain, spread terror.

The author does not promise readers a happy ending. She did not create heroes and heroines and saviors. The battles are not between good and evil, but between evil and not-quite-so-evil. The motives are greed, vengeance, power. The outcomes are brutal, destructive, deadly, jaw-dropping. The result is a stunning and chilling and deliciously dark and breathtaking story.

Readers who prefer their characters a bit devious, a touch menacing, not always well-intentioned, yet wickedly appealing will fall instantly in love with THE YOUNG ELITES. Secrets, blackmail, deception, betrayal, deadly plots, lethal confrontations, and mass executions make for an edge-of-your-seat and electrifying read. And with the promise of new characters, a new setting, a new society, this series is an absolute must must-read.

NOTE: This review is based on an ARC received in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    The Review

JUBILEE MANOR is an engaging and suspenseful and beautifully written conclusion to the series. This sequel took a deeper dive into the classist issues between the gentry and the Rootless. It presented a murder mystery that cast suspicion upon a few key players. It introduced conflict between Madeline and Captain David Dana. It offered up a few surprises to keep things interesting. And it wrapped everything up, answering the most important, if not all, of the lingering questions by the story’s end.

Madeline Landry hoped that with her uncle Jack running Landry Park, the gentry and the Rootless would be able to find a way to come together, get beyond their differences, alleviate the tensions between them, and discover a solution to the problems that have been plaguing them for so long. But Jack’s presence in the family home seems to have weakened his position with the Rootless, causing a more radical faction to form. And when it appears that a member of the Rootless is behind the murders of Madeline’s friends, the likelihood of a peaceful resolution becomes slim to non-existent.

With tempers rising all around, her father out of the picture, Jack keeping secrets, Captain David Dana refusing to see her side, dangerous alliances forming, and calls to action being made, Madeline is desperate to come up with a plan that will result in the fewest casualties and will ultimately be something that everyone can live with. And she’ll have to do it before the killer sets his sights on her.

Bethany Hagen penned a story that gives readers much to think about. It touches on issues of prejudice, elitism, retribution, justice, fairness, compassion, fear, anger, acceptance. Through her characters she shows just how much each of these elements can affect not only someone’s behavior and outlook, but their environment and even the larger picture. She shows how much good can come from being open to change and being non-judgmental and how much bad can come from being the opposite.

With Madeline Landry, the author created a character who developed into someone strong and compassionate and selfess, someone who looked past differences, someone who stood by their beliefs even when it was difficult to do so, but also who was willing to admit their mistakes when they were wrong. And it was Madeline who became a force for change.

While the story does put emphasis on the important issues it presents, it is not so heavy as to be weighed down by them. There are some exciting new developments, a few twists, a love story in jeopardy, a ticking clock, a killer on the loose, a people facing elimination, an Empire ready to pounce, and one girl fighting to save her friends, her family, her home, the Rootless.

JUBILEE MANOR is rich and gorgeous and captivating. The pacing and flow make it an easy read to get lost in. The mystery promises to be one that’s not so easy to solve. The romance is on the rocky side. And the lack of a guarantee that the outcome will be a happy one for all of the story’s most beloved characters makes it positively spellbinding.

    jubilee

I am absolutely thrilled to be the release day stop on the JUBILEE MANOR Blog Tour and to have an awesome guest post from Bethany Hagen on writing the romance in this amazing sequel. She did a fantastic job with Madeline and Captain David Dana’s love story. And I am so glad that she allowed her characters to retain their identity and their beliefs rather than forgoing both for the sake of the romance.

This is such an awesome read and conclusion to this series. The writing flowed beautifully, the story was incredibly entertaining, the mystery kept me guessing, the characters were ones I adored. It’s a total must read book – and series. So if you haven’t yet discovered it, now’s the perfect time because you won’t have to wait between books one and two. Read more

Note: The review is based on a finished copy received from the publisher in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    The Review

Action-packed, riveting, epic and original, ZODIAC is the first book in a new series of the same name that invites readers to explore a fascinating and intriguing world that is elaborate, unique and incredibly imaginative. It delivers a story filled with nail-biting suspense, deadly battles, catastrophic loss, devastation, deception, and heartbreak and introduces a heroine strong enough to fight, to stand up against those that doubt her, and to pick herself back up after she’s been knocked down.

Rhoma Grace barely had time to recover from the fallout from the explosion on Thebe that left most everyone at the Academy on Elara dead and her home, House Cancer, ravaged, let alone mourn their loss, before being asked to step in as her House’s next Guardian. Young and untrained, she’s not sure she’s the right person to read the stars and lead her people. Especially when no one else sees what she sees in her readings.

But with no other options, no home to return to, and her family’s whereabouts unknown, she has nothing left to lose by saying yes. Except for her life, the lives of everyone counting on her to keep them safe, the entire Zodiac.

Romina Russell has built a world, a galaxy, a universe, that is utterly enthralling and hugely inventive. One that is filled with a vast array of interesting characters whose customs, behaviors and appearances vary widely from House to House. She has created a story that is constructed from myth that is not commonly used as a basis for stories in the genre. Myth that she expanded upon, made exciting, made her own.

She brought the Zodiac to life. She developed each House, its landscape and its citizens – some beautiful, whimsical, fantastical, others peaceful, others practical, others disturbing, others dangerous. She created Houses that could be trusted and others that are suspect. And she introduced an enemy that could unite or destroy them all.

ZODIAC is an amazing story that is rich with detail, exploding with possibility, filled with heart-stopping danger, thrilling adventures, swoon-worthy romance, and grievous loss. It is a daring and refreshingly different story with a likable and fearless heroine and two loyal and protective heroes that will hold readers captive from beginning to end. It’s an outstanding story that will be unputdownable.

It is a must read first book in this series that is absolutely mind-blowing.

I cannot tell you how excited I am to be a part of the ZODIAC Blog Tour. I hadn’t been aware of this amazing book’s upcoming release until I was invited to be a stop. But once I read its description I was fascinated, intrigued, excited to read it and host the author on the blog.

And now that I have, I am totally blown away. It is one of my top ten books of 2014. The world-building is incredible. The story is epic. And riveting. And action-packed. And heartbreaking. And so much more.

I adore Rho. She’s strong. She’s determined. She’s a fighter. She does not give up. I adore Nishi and Hysan and Mathias, too.

I love every single thing about this book. I want everyone to add this to the top of their must reads list. I can’t wait for everyone to read it so I can talk about what happened. And I cannot wait for the next book in this outstanding series to be released.

This book received my 6-star off-the-menu rating in my review which will post tomorrow. Today I have an awesome guest post by Author Romina Russell on creating the ZODIAC universe and I just had to add in a giveaway for a copy of the book.

If you haven’t yet heard all about ZODIAC, be sure to head over to its website to learn more. It was released on Tuesday so that if you’re as captivated as I was by the description, which is below, you won’t have to wait to add it to your collection.

Anyway… I am going to turn the blog over to this incredibly imaginative and wildly creative author before I end up revealing something too spoiler-y – like which “Team” I’m on, or why there were tears, or which Houses I trust and which I don’t.

    The Guest Post

    On creating the ZODIAC universe

    by Romina Russell

What’s exciting to me about ZODIAC is that it takes something we all have—our astrological signs—and explores what life would be like if they determined everything about us. Where we live, what we’re like, whom we love.

Each planetary system in the Zodiac galaxy is completely catered to the culture of its people. On House Libra, where justice is prized above all, a democratically elected government passes new laws, and a jury of twelve ordinary citizens must approve each one for ratification. On House Taurus, industrious Taurians who like to work hard to play harder will power through three-day workweeks so they can enjoy four-day weekends. House Cancer, where the protagonist (Rho) lives, is a nurturing, maternal society run by the Matriarchy—the eldest mothers in the House’s twelve founding families. And so on.

Rho has never left the Crab constellation before, but when she discovers Ophiuchus hiding in the Zodiac’s stars, staying home is no longer an option.

One of the most powerful insights she gains as she ventures through the universe is how integral our differences are to our unity. As more and more planets are attacked, Rho realizes that the more the Houses close themselves off to each other, the smaller their worlds grow—even their worldviews shrink. She starts to understand that the reason the Zodiac has a dozen worlds isn’t so they can learn about each other, but from each other. They each bring a different strength to the galaxy because they’re meant to work together, not apart.

This is an integral insight that changes the way she looks at the Zodiac and shapes the kind of leader she becomes.

Book Watch: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

    addtogoodreads

WatchBOOK-2BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA by April Genevieve Tucholke will be released in the U.S. on August 15, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Dial, the print edition is 368 pages.

BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA is the first book in the author’s Between series. The second book in the series, BETWEEN THE SPARK AND BURN, is slated for release in 2014.

    div1

There are a ton of awesome books releasing the week of August 13th, but the book I am most excited for is BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA by April Genevieve Tucholke. Ever since I first saw the amazing cover, fell in love with the title and head-over-heels madly in love with the description I’ve been dying to read it.

I was not able to get my hands on an eGalley, but as August 15th is just a few weeks away, I don’t have very much longer to wait to meet Violet and River and to check out this awesome book the description calls “a dreamy, twisting contemporary romance.” I love dreamy. I love romance. And I love the fact that this story promises “the thrilling dread of gothic horror.”

I can’t wait to find out just what “eerie” and “grim” things start to happen after River West moves in. I can’t wait to see just what River’s intentions are with Violet. And I’m so unbelievably curious about where this story is headed, as the description is more than a little bit vague on the details.

But I love horror. I love stories that are terrifying. I love reading about bad boys… you can’t get much worse than the Devil. And with the “crumbling estate” and “faded decadence” this setting sounds absolutely amazing.

So while I am very much looking forward to checking out the latest installments of each of the books I listed below and I’m more than a little bit excited about the release of the LOVE STINKS! anthology that I’m in, the book I am most excited for that releases the week of August 13th is BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA. Which is why I had to choose it as the book to spotlight this week.

Nothing much exciting rolls through Violet White’s sleepy, seaside town…until River West comes along. River rents the guesthouse behind Violet’s crumbling estate, and as eerie, grim things start to happen, Violet begins to wonder about the boy living in her backyard. Is River just a crooked-smiling liar with pretty eyes and a mysterious past? Or could he be something more? Violet’s grandmother always warned her about the Devil, but she never said he could be a dark-haired boy who takes naps in the sun, who likes coffee, who kisses you in a cemetery…who makes you want to kiss back. Violet’s already so knee-deep in love, she can’t see straight. And that’s just how River likes it.

Blending faded decadence and the thrilling dread of gothic horror, April Genevieve Tucholke weaves a dreamy, twisting contemporary romance, as gorgeously told as it is terrifying—a debut to watch.
