    The Interview

    Q&A with Maria V. Snyder

    Q. If you had to describe NIGHT STUDY in 25 words or less, how would you describe it?

    A. An unputdownable continuation of the adventures of Yelena and Valek.

    Q. What was your favorite scene and your most challenging scene to write in NIGHT STUDY and why?

    A. My favorite scene is a spoiler so I can’t reveal that!  As for my second favorite scene, it is when Leif and Devlen are together and investigating who made the glass panels for those hot glasshouses. The two of them together ended up being fun to write, which was a bit of a surprise to me. It showed that Devlen has been accepted by Leif as part of the “herd.” The most challenging is also a spoiler, but I can say it has to deal with Valek and what had happened to him when he witnessed his brothers being murdered. Poor guy I really put him through the wringer ;).

    Q. Across the series, who was your favorite secondary character to write and why?

    A. Janco! Which shouldn’t be a surprise ;). He is so fun to write because I can just insert random comments and rants from him and he’s a nice balance to the serious problems Yelena and Valek are experiencing.

    Q. What are your two most favorite non-spoiler-y quotes from Valek in NIGHT STUDY? And what are your two most favorite non-spoiler-y quotes from Yelena in NIGHT STUDY?

    A. “You can’t assassinate bullies or boys who kiss your daughter.” Yelena says.

    “Pity.”  Valek says in response.

“Are you sure it’s not seven dog years? You have a lot of gray in your muzzle,” Yelena quipped, referring to Janco’s salt-and-pepper goatee.

“Love trumps logic. And when it comes to you, love, I can be extremely irrational.” Valek

    Q. What has been your greatest challenge about writing a series of this length with these characters?

    A. Finding new challenges for them has been hard. I had to take away Yelena’s magic because she was too powerful as a Soulfinder. Plus she grew and changed as a character in the first three books. However, Valek stayed the same throughout the first 3 books, so by focusing on him and his journey I was able to come up with some fun problems for them.

    Q. What has been your greatest joy about writing a series of this length with these characters?

    A. I know them so well and they’ve become like family.

    Q. If you could change one character’s fate from the series for the better or worse, whose fate would it be and why?

    A. I’m not the type to wish to change anything from my books. Once printed, that’s the story and I’m happy with it. But there have been a few times I wish Moon Man was still alive since he would add in some nice humor and provide plenty of cryptic advice for Yelena.

    Q. What do you love most about writing this series – the characters, the plot, the world?

    A. The characters! It’s always about the characters for me – the world and plot evolve from the characters and their desires and motivations.

    Q. If you had to live in Ixia or Sitia, where would you choose to live and why would you choose to live there?

    A. I’d live in Ixia. I like wearing a uniform—it makes life easier. And I like the way the Commander does things. I’d become a member of  Valek’s corp and hopefully be able to go on missions with Ari and Janco. Maria the spy! Fun stuff!

    Q. If Yelena could say one thing to you about the direction of her story, what would she say?

    A. That’s enough!

    Q. If Valek could say one thing to you about how you’ve crafted his and Yelena’s relationship, what would he say?

    A. Thank you.

    About Maria V. Snyder

    Maria

Maria V. Snyder changed from being a meteorologist to a novelist in 1995, when she began writing to keep her sanity while raising two children. Since then, she has published numerous freelance articles in magazines and newspapers, and teaches fiction-writing classes at the local college and area libraries. The classes give her the wonderful opportunity to encourage fellow writers, and to keep improving her craft.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Maria always had a fascination with big storms. Dreaming of chasing tornados, Maria earned a bachelors of science degree in meteorology at Penn State University. But she discovered, much to her chagrin, that forecasting the weather wasn’t one of her skills. In order to chase tornados you had to predict where they might form. Creating fantasy worlds where she has complete control of the weather was more agreeable to her.

Maria’s research on food-tasting methods with an expert chocolate taster, her husband, turned out to be a delicious bonus while writing Poison Study.

Maria has a brown belt in Isshinryu Karate, and enjoys playing volleyball and the cello. Traveling in general and via cruise ship in particular are her biggest distractions from writing. Maria has traveled to Belize, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal.

Maria lives with her husband, son, daughter and yellow lab, Hazelnut, in Pennsylvania where she is at work on more LUNA novels. She is also pursuing a master’s degree in writing popular fiction from Seton Hill University.
