Lia Nautilus may be a Mermaid but she’s never lived in the ocean. War has ravaged the seven seas ever since the infamous Little Mermaid unleashed a curse that stripped Mer of their immortality. Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check. Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia’s entire community at risk.

So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right? That is, until Lia finds out she isn’t the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn’t realize the danger he’s in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay. Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with him, the harder it is for her to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.

Cover Reveal: THE REQUIEM RED by Brynn Chapman + Giveaway

cover-revealPURP_darkenessI am super excited to be participating in the cover reveal for THE REQUIEM RED – a book whose description has me totally intrigued. A monster. An asylum. Missing girls. And corn music… wait, what? Corn music?

    Yeah, definitely intrigued.

The cover looks like the perfect fit to the story. It’s a bit mysterious. A touch haunting. And yeah, I’m loving the bramble-y graphic surrounding the title (which is awesome by the way).

    But that’s what I think.

    What do you think?

Mason, a new, kind orderly, sees 29 as a woman, not a lunatic. And as his belief in her grows, so does her self- confidence. That perhaps she might escape, might see the outside world.

NAMELESS Blog Tour: Interview with Jennifer Jenkins + Giveaway

    Nameless-Tour-Banner

I am super excited to be today’s release day stop on the NAMELESS Blog Tour. I have an awesome interview with Author Jennifer Jenkins in which she talks about the four clans, reveals which scene is her favorite, shares some of the surprises she encountered when writing, and more.

I only recently had the opportunity to read NAMELESS, but it was so amazing and makes me wish I read it ages ago. Though one benefit to having just read it is that the wait for the sequel won’t be as long.

And yes, there will be a sequel. NAMELESS is not a standalone. There will be more of this world and its characters. And while there is plenty of time before that will happen, now is the perfect time to dive into this first book in the series. Because there is no wait. The wait is over. It’s available now.

So you can meet Zo and find out what happens when she gets inside Rams Gate. You can discover whether all Ram are as ruthless as Zo thinks they are. You can see if Zo is able to stay on mission or if her plan starts to fall apart.

And the best way to do that is to grab a copy from your favorite bookseller. Because I’m not going to say a word…. well, not beyond what I might have revealed in my review.

Anyway… Be sure to check out the interview below to learn more about this fantastic book and its author. And don’t forget to enter the giveaway for a chance to some awesome prizes, one of which is a signed copy of the book!

    Description…

Four clans have been at war for centuries: the Kodiak, the Raven, the Wolf and the Ram. Through brutal war tactics, the Ram have dominated the region, inflicting death and destruction on their neighbors.

Seventeen-year-old Zo is a Wolf and a Healer who volunteers to infiltrate the Ram as a spy on behalf of the allied clans. She offers herself as a Ram slave, joining the people who are called the “nameless.” Hers is a suicide mission – Zo’s despair after losing her parents in a Ram raid has left her seeking both revenge and an end to her own misery. But after her younger sister follows her into Rams Gate, Zo must find a way to survive her dangerous mission and keep her sister safe.

What she doesn’t expect to find is the friendship of a young Ram whose life she saves, the confusing feelings she develops for a Ram soldier, and an underground nameless insurrection. Zo learns that revenge, loyalty and love are more complicated than she ever imagined in the first installment of this two-book series.

    The Interview

    Q. If you had to describe NAMELESS in 15 words or less, how would you describe it?

    Wow. That’s tough. Let’s go with…

Bat-out-of-hell action with a swoon-worthy romance where two worlds collide.

    Q. What are the attributes, strengths and weaknesses of each of the four clans in NAMELESS – the Kodiak, the Raven, the Wolf and the Ram?

I could honestly write a whole history book about each of the clans, but for the sake of brevity…

    Ram:

Strengths- Strong Work Ethic. Highly Driven. Loyal to family and friends. Competitive.

Weaknesses- Tendency to be narrow-minded. Thinks little of those outside their circle of influence. Known to win at any cost.

    Wolf:

Strengths- Diplomatic. Strong leaders who work well with others. High sense of moral obligation.

Weaknesses- Tend to trust others to a fault. Sometimes arrogant in their beliefs.

    Raven:

Strengths- Spiritual. Intelligent. Cunning fighters. High regard for family and ancestors.

Weaknesses- Unwilling to fight unless they know they will win. Known to bend the truth to suit their needs.

    Kodiak:

Strengths- Family is everything. Vocal. Extremely honest. Will die to keep a promise and expects the same from others.

Weaknesses: Can be blunt. Loud. Unapologetic. Acts first and considers consequences second.

    Q. When writing NAMELESS were there any surprises to you as its author – unexpected directions, unexpected characters, unexpected relationships, unexpected romance? And if so, did you allow the story to follow the new path or did you wrangle it back onto its originally planned course?

I tend to write by the seat of my pants, so there are always surprises. Some are exciting and even thrilling, while others make for a lot of rewriting. ☺ In NAMELESS I never anticipated the brotherly/sisterly friendship between Joshua and Tess. I also never set out to write the Historian (who ends up playing a MAJOR role in the book). I didn’t know about Stone or Eva or even a Nameless rebellion.

I’m sure if my characters and I could sit down and have a conversation, they would complain, “Who’s driving this thing?”

My answer to them would be simple: “You are. I’m just along for the ride.”

    Q. What was your favorite scene to write about in NAMELESS and why was it a favorite?

I think the scene when Gryphon discovers Zo’s true identity ranks up there with one of my favorite scenes I’ve ever written.

    Q. What was the most challenging aspect to creating and writing about Zo?

Zo’s character was, for the most part, very easy to write. When I wrote her I was channeling some pretty heavy emotions from my personal life. She was my therapeutic release as I watched someone very dear to me struggle with depression and anxiety.

I needed to put her in the most trying situation imaginable, and give her a reason to fight. To live. Writing her survival story was my subconscious way of proving that survival was possible.

NOTE: This review is based on an eARC received from the publisher in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    The Review

Electrifying and intense and instantly and completely captivating, NAMELESS is one of those reads that will make you race through the pages to find out what’s going to happen next. With a fascinating new world to discover, one that is primitive, harsh, brutal, and intriguing new characters to meet who are fierce and determined and deadly, some of whom are cruel and others who are compassionate, you will be immediately pulled into the story and you’ll never want the journey to end.

Zo was determined to help the Allies, even if it meant sacrificing herself. While she knew she might be able to get beyond the wall of Ram’s Gate, she held out no hope of getting back out. But it would be worth it if she could discover anything about her enemy that could be used to help take them down.

She was the Allies’ best chance of getting inside. Her abilities as a Healer would hopefully make her useful enough to the Ram to keep her alive long enough to fulfill her mission. And it might have worked.

If only she hadn’t let her rage blind her, she would have known that the two people who cared most about her wouldn’t let her go so easily. While she was more than willing to risk her own life to avenge her parents’ deaths, she would never have risked her sister Tess’s life or her best friend Gabe’s.

Now with something to lose she’d have to be careful. She couldn’t take any unnecessary chances. She couldn’t risk being discovered as anything other than one of the nameless. And she’d have to find a way to do the impossible – to get herself and her sister back over the wall.

Jennifer Jenkins immerses readers into her story right from the start. There is no long lead up to Zo putting her plan into action. There is no lengthy backstory to slow the pace. She brings the action, the suspense, the intrigue from the get-go.

She keeps readers riveted by making them curious to know more about the nameless, more about what made Zo so vengeful, what made the Ram so aggressive, how they got so powerful, whether Zo will succeed or if she’ll fail. She lets her story unfold from not just Zo’s perspective, but from that of another incredibly appealing character, Gryphon, who is brave, powerful, loyal, determined, but also merciful and conflicted.

And she introduces a heartfelt romance that is not of the “insta-love” variety, she builds the foundation for a much expanded world in later books in the series, she teases bits and pieces of information about the other clans, and she reveals hidden plots, sympathizers, and allies, making for an interesting and engaging and unputdownable read.

NAMELESS is powerful and surprising and unexpected. It tackles a number of issues that mirror real-life issues that have arisen throughout the history of the world – starvation, genocide, enslavement, sacrifice, the cost of retaliation, doing whatever it takes to survive. It explores the many facets of human nature. It shows opposing perspectives, giving readers a more complete picture in order that they might be more understanding and sympathetic.

It has a number of strong characters that are immensely likable. It’s set in a world that is cold-blooded, severe, ruthless but still allows for kindness and beauty. It’s a story that is beautiful and breathtaking and one that is absolutely not to be missed.

    The Guest Post

Top 3 Favorite Passages in SERPENTINE

    by Cindy Pon

    #1

The kiss itself had been chaste, like she had shared with Zhen Ni before on the cheek. But there was an undercurrent there, an expectation, a bated breath. It seemed to have stoked something deep inside of her; as if touching her mouth to someone else’s had kindled a hidden desire, dormant until now.

I love this passage for the prose, but also because it signifies the beginning of everything for my heroine Skybright. It also speaks volumes of the relationship between Zhen Ni and her and hints at what will happen later in the story.

    #2

Smooth scales rippled over her human flesh, like dragonfly wings fluttering their way from her feet and rising to cover her abdomen. She swept both hands across her torso, the clothes having evaporated from her, and gasped. Her snake tongue darted out, oppressing her voice, and she could taste the air with it; the whiff of smoke from the snuffed lantern, the bitterness of the gardenia musk Zhen Ni had rubbed into her wrists in the morning, all tinged by the scent of her own sweat and fear.

This is a story about metamorphosis and transformation. It is about Skybright’s journey to find the truth of her origins, but also, to find herself. I love fantasy because it gives me the freedom to write the fantastic to explore mundane themes that all people deal with, the most fundamental of which is: Who am I?

    #3

“My name is Stone,” the man’s voice said in her ear, and she lurched, lifting high on her serpent body. But no one was near her. “Say it if you need me.” And his words whorled into the night.

    Stone.

It was what he had tasted like on her tongue. Of earth and gravel and granite. Of dirt and pebbles and the most pristine jade. Of all the life that could spring from it. Or all that it could oppress with immoveable finality.

One of my favorite characters in this duology, Stone came out of nowhere and surprised me when I began writing him within the story. It’s been a real pleasure to get to know him as a character and explore his personal arc in these books.
