    POISON STUDY Read-Along: Chapters 26-32 + Giveaway

    posion_readALONG

Today I’m sharing my thoughts on chapters 26 through 32. And while I am a touch late in posting, I did end up finishing POISON STUDY last week. I just couldn’t wait.

If you’d like to check out what the other four hosts think, be sure to stop by their blogs.

AND… if you’re participating in the read along and would like to share your thoughts for this week’s chapters, leave them and/or your post link in the comments.

    The Read-along Schedule

    • October 4th-10th | Chapters 1-8
    • October 11th-17th | Chapters 9-17
    • October 18th-24th |Chapters 18-25
    • October 25th-31st |Chapters 26-32 and closing post

    The Hosts

    Thoughts on Chapters 26-32

Everything happens in these last seven chapters. They are totally intense, nail-biting, action-packed, nerve-wracking.

During the Sitian’s visit, Yelena is poisoned by Love Me when testing the Commander’s brandy. She finally discovers that the beans were Criollo when they’re tossed into Rand’s ovens. She has it out with Rand, revealing she knows he betrayed her.

If that’s not enough, when she sets out with the Commander for MD-5 Rand betrays her again to Captain Star before redeeming himself. She connects with Irys who informs her she needs to find Mogkan’s magic source as he’s clearly been amping up his power. She meets up with Valek and tells him what she knows.

When they finally arrive, the Commander is basically turned into a puppet and Yelena’s put under guard by Brazell and Mogkan. She manages to escape, find Valek, and they go looking for the source, which turns out to be even more horrifying than she ever could have imagined.

They’re caught and imprisoned and she reveals to him all that happened to her when she was with Brazell and Reyad. They find a way to escape the dungeon and go into hiding while a massive search for them is undertaken. And they finally, finally, finally hook up and reveal their feelings for each other.

Oh, and Valek shares a bit of his past with her, too.

And while I could reveal all that happens at the end – with Yelena and Valek, the Commander, Brazell, Mogkan, Irys, Ari and Janco – I’m not going to. I’ve spoiled enough. But it is an epic finish, and definitely a bit sad, and it is guaranteed to make you wonder where things are headed.

I will, however, share yet another short passage. It’s a declaration by Valek, actually.

“Yelena, you’ve driven me crazy. You’ve caused me considerable trouble and I’ve contemplated ending your life twice since I’ve known you.” Valek’s warm breath in my ear sent a shiver down my spine.

“But you’ve slipped under my skin, invaded my blood and seized my heart.”

“That sounds more like a poison than a person,” was all I could say. His confession had both shocked and thrilled me.

“Exactly,” Valek replied. “You have poisoned me.” He rolled me over to face him. Before I could make another sound, he kissed me.

And on that note, so ends the read along.

I hope you loved reading (or re-reading) POISON STUDY this past month. Ten years after its release it’s still every bit as timely as today’s releases. It’s exciting and epic, with characters you can’t help but adore. It’s one of those “forever” stories that will be remembered and talked about for decades to come.

    POISON STUDY Read-Along: Chapters 18-25 + Giveaway

In case you weren’t aware, the POISON STUDY Read Along began on October 1st. And although it’s already started and is ending soon, it’s not too late to sign up. Just check out the sign-up post HERE for more details.

Today I’m sharing my thoughts on chapters 18 through 25. And as soon as I finish writing my thoughts for this week’s chapters I am totally going to read the remaining chapters. Because I can’t possibly stop now with just eight chapters remaining. I can’t. I won’t.

If you’d like to check out the schedule, it follows below. But I’ll be sharing my thoughts for the final chapters next Wednesday and closing out the read along on the 31st.

If you’d like to check out what the other four hosts think each week, be sure to check out their weekly posts.

AND… if you’re participating in the read along and would like to share your thoughts for this week’s chapters, leave them and/or your post link in the comments.

    The Read-along Schedule

    • October 4th-10th | Chapters 1-8
    • October 11th-17th | Chapters 9-17
    • October 18th-24th |Chapters 18-25
    • October 25th-31st |Chapters 26-32 and closing post

    The Hosts

    Thoughts on Chapters 18-25

The pace has really picked up in these eight chapters. A lot went down. And even though I have read this book, I am on the edge of my seat, biting my nails, and am so anxious about what’s to come.

Yelena is getting better at learning to defend herself. Practicing with Ari and Janco (and now Maren) has really started to pay off. She’s also trying to learn as much as she can about magic. And… Janco has taught her how to pick locks, which has come in somewhat handy.

Margg is still trying to prove her to be no better than a rat, but she turns the tables on her with some rather unexpected results.

Things aren’t going great with the Commander. Brazell has definitely done something involving magic and the Criollo to exert some kind of control. A secret about the Commander was also revealed to Yelena, though she isn’t sure if it is real or just a dream.

Nix is discovered to be working for Brazell and finally makes his move on Yelena. Though, because of her smarts and her new abilities she is able to take him down.

We learn the truth about exactly what happened between Yelena and Reyad and why she murdered him. We also learn that Yelena has the hots for Valek and maybe, just maybe, he feels a little something for her.

Yelena discovers she’s been betrayed by a friend which leaves her devastated. But not too devastated to end up making a drunken move on Valek after tasting one too many brandies at the Generals meeting.

The representatives from Sitia show up, one of whom is quite the surprise. So there’s no way I can possibly stop reading now.

These chapters were so unbelievably awesome. I am now determined to read this entire series this winter.

And, in keeping with last week, I just have to share my most favorite short exchange between Yelena and Valek of this entire book.

“What have I earned from you, Valke? Loyalty? Respect? Trust?”

“You have my attention. But give me what I want, and you can have everything.”

    Mmmmmm. Aaaand on that note…

    Until next week…

    POISON STUDY Read-Along: Chapters 9-17 + Giveaway

In case you weren’t aware, the POISON STUDY Read Along began on October 1st. And although it’s already started, it’s not too late to sign up. Just check out the sign-up post HERE for more details.

Today I’m sharing my thoughts on chapters nine through seventeen. I have been fighting the urge to read ahead and have been only semi-successful so far. I’ve managed to bargain with myself – if I stick to the read along schedule I’m allowing myself to continue reading the series next month. And I really, really, want to continue this series. So I’m trying hard.

If you’d like to check out the schedule, it follows below. But I’ll continue to share my thoughts on the assigned chapters every Wednesday.

    Thoughts on Chapters 9-17

While this week’s chapters totaled nine instead of eight, they somehow flew by even faster. There was an attempt on Yelena’s life. And it was not on Brazell’s orders. She’s now being targeted by one of Sitia’s elite magicians. Yelena agrees to become a fugitive to test the Commander’s soldiers and she does surprisingly well. And she decides she wants to Ari and Janco – who we finally meet – to teach her how to defend herself.

Even more questions have arisen – about Yelena, about magic, about Yelena’s ability to wield magic, about Brazell’s motives, about the mysterious gift of Criollo he sent the Commander, about his factory, about Rand. Because something fishy is definitely going on with Rand.

Valek is proving himself to be even more likable, fascinating, intriguing than before. From his ability to withstand magic, to his skills at tracking, fighting, poison tasting, spying, stealing, sculpting, he is quite the talent. And his concern for Yelena’s safety makes him an even more appealing man.

This one line from the book says it all: Valek was liquid in motion.

And yes, I did peek ahead. Just a little. I couldn’t resist.

But that’s all. I promise. Until next week…

Today I’m sharing my thoughts on the first eight chapters of the book. And let me tell you, even though I’ve read POISON STUDY before, it was impossible to stop reading at the end of those eight chapters. I have a feeling I’ll be finished with the re-read before next week. I’ll probably be finished re-reading it today.

But I will wait for the appropriate dates to post my thoughts. I may read ahead, but I won’t post ahead.

    Thoughts on Chapters 1-8

I have previously read POISON STUDY. But it was quite some time ago when I did read it. So when I picked it up for the read along, I wasn’t instantly familiar with what was happening and wasn’t entirely sure of how things would unfold. But it didn’t take long to be reminded of the characters, the world, what I loved about this book.

POISON STUDY is one of those reads that grabs hold right from the start. You’re introduced to a prisoner who is about to be executed. You’re only given the slightest bit of information about them before their time is supposed to be up. You learn the prisoner is a woman. That her name is Yelena. And that she’s being offered the choice between execution or becoming the Commander’s food taster – a job that lasts until death and might not be much of a stay of execution if she were to make a mistake.

Every piece of information the author reveals only makes you want to know more. It makes you eager to keep reading to find out exactly what situation Yelena found herself in that made her become a murderer.  It makes you want to know how Valek, the Commander’s right-hand man, earned his reputation. It makes you want to learn more about Ixia and whether the new militaristic regime is better or worse than the previous one.

In the first eight chapters Yelena goes through an interesting but pretty awful learning process in order to get up to speed about poisons and what is required of her to be the Commander’s next taster. She is continually hounded by the guards of the General whose son she killed. She is constantly being tested, poisoned, by Valek. But she survives every ordeal and is all set to begin her job as the official food taster.

Much is learned about Ixia. Quite a bit is revealed about Yelena, including the fact that she may have some ability to wield magic and seems to have an affinity for detecting poisons. And there is a bit of foreshadowing involving General Brazell.

Valek remains quite the mystery at the end of the eighth chapter. One you’ll most definitely want to solve.

It’s still very early in the read. The world is only just being developed. But more than enough detail is provided so that you can start to picture it. Already certain characters are beginning to stand out. And although their trustworthiness is still up in the air, there are a few that fall onto the “likable” side and a few that definitely fall onto the “despise” side.

And as far as the re-reading experience goes? Awesome. These chapters flew. And yet I couldn’t read fast enough. I wanted to devour this entire book, not just the eight chapters assigned. The story so far is incredibly exciting. And with Yelena’s job, it’s guaranteed to be a nail-biter. Because at any moment she could be fatally poisoned.

Or Brazell’s men could come after her. Or the Commander could tire of her, sealing her fate. Or Valek could decide she’s not trustworthy enough. Or her ability could be discovered.

So much could go wrong. At any moment. We’ll just have to wait and see.

    Until next week…
