Top 10 of 2016: Books I’m Looking Forward to in 2017

Welcome to Day Five of the Top 10 of 2016

    A WEEK OF LOOKING BACK…

    …AND LOOKING FORWARD

    As mentioned previously…

I can’t believe that I’ve been co-hosting this event for six years with Jaime of Two Chicks on Books and three years with Nancy of Tales of the Ravenous Reader! And while I’m so sad that Mindy won’t be joining us this year, I’m thrilled that Bridget of Dark Faerie Tales has joined the team, as has Nancy’s blog partner, Christy.

I haven’t read a ton of books this year, or blogged very much, so I almost decided not to participate. But this event is so much fun that I just couldn’t miss out.

If you haven’t yet heard of the Top 10 of 2016 week-long event, in a nutshell it’s where we share our favorite bookish lists and invite you to share yours over the next five days by leaving your post links in the daily Linky Lists.

Yet again, we’re each hosting our own giveaways on four of the five days of this challenge – We’re taking Day One off, Dark Faerie Tales is hosting Day Two’s giveaway, I am hosting Day Three’s giveaway, Two Chicks on Books is hosting Day Four’s giveaway, and Tales of the Ravenous Reader is hosting Day Five’s giveaway. So be sure to visit each of our blogs this week to share your post links and enter the giveaways!

The Book I’m Looking Forward to in 2017

There are SO many books I can’t wait to meet in 2017 – some I don’t even yet know I want to meet – and even more books in series that I want to continue reading. But I had to choose just ten.

However, for this post it doesn’t matter how few books I read this year, so I am totally listing a few honorable mentions.

I just wish I knew whether certain series were continuing in 2017 or at all…. like Leah Clifford’s Resurrectionist seriesJenna Black’s Gifted series or Sara Shepard’s The Amateurs.

And I WISH I hadn’t read a few books in 2016 that I totally would have listed as books I’m looking forward to in 2017 – 100 HOURS by Rachel Vincent, ROSEBLOOD by A.G. Howard, FLICKER AND MIST by Mary G. Thompson, and WAYFARER by Alexandra Bracken.

    DESCRIPTION

    LOVE CONQUERS

On a storm-swept terrace high above the streets of Manhattan, Mason Starling holds the fate of the world in her hands as her beloved Fennrys lies bleeding at her feet, his life hanging in the balance. The ancient Norse prophecy of Ragnarok stands poised on the knife edge of fulfillment. Mason’s transformation into a Valkyrie—a chooser of the slain and the one who will ultimately bring about the end of the world—is complete. Still, she remains determined to thwart her father’s apocalyptic desires. Whatever is to come, it won’t happen because of what the prophecy foretold, or what Gunnar Starling has planned, or what the fates have already decided. What happens next will be up to Mason and the Fennrys Wolf. The world had better hope they haven’t reached the limits of what their souls and swords can survive.

Perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series, and set in the same universe as Lesley Livingston’s much-loved WONDROUS STRANGE trilogy, with roots in Greek, Roman, Norse, Egyptian, and Celtic myths and legends, this thrilling conclusion to the acclaimed Starling trilogy is filled to the hilt with sweeping adventure and soaring romance.

    REVIEW

TRANSCENDENT is the electrifying, edge-of-your-seat exciting and action-packed end to a series that delivered awesome battles, mythology, characters and writing. The pace was nonstop. The shocks and surprises kept coming. And the tension continued to build until its explosive conclusion.

With a fierce heroine who became even more intense in this third and final book in the trilogy, a swoon-worthy hero who never stopped fighting for what and who he wanted, a number of enemies whose motives and aims may have been at odds but were each one of them deadly, and a host of interesting and engaging supporting characters whose outcomes readers are sure to be invested in, this story brings more than just a riveting plot. And with the promise of heartbreak, danger and a seemingly unavoidable fate, as well as the hope for a happy ending, this book will be unputdownable.

Lesley Livingston knows just how to create stories that will keep readers hooked and develop characters they’ll love. She will make readers smile, laugh out loud, bite their nails, hold their breath, sigh, and keep those pages rapidly turning with TRANSCENDENT. It is suspenseful from the very first page to the very last. And while it is certain to be an exhilarating read, it makes no guarantee there won’t be moments that are absolutely heartrending.

The story picks up immediately where things left off following that killer cliffhanger ending. It yanks readers right back into the story, amidst the chaos and devastation before adding even more. New abilities will be revealed, new characters will be introduced, new obstacles will be placed in Mason Starling’s way.

The fight may end early for some, but the looming question as to whether destiny will be fulfilled or thwarted won’t be answered until the very end. Most other questions will be answered, about Mason, Roth, Rory, Fenn, Rafe, Heather and Cal, but the door may have been left open just a crack in regard to a few others.

Fans of the series will be more than satisfied with this story’s conclusion and its epilogue. TRANSCENDENT takes readers on a wild and amazing ride. It brings them deeper into the Norse mythology on which this series is based. It gives them one last look at the very loyal and immeasurably charming Fennrys Wolf. It transforms a girl into a heroine who has the ability to save the world.

There will be carnage. There will be loss. There will be a touch of romance. And altogether it will be awesome.

Descendant Blog Tour: The Fennrys Wolf Character Interview + Giveaway

    DESCENDANT

I am over-the-moon excited to be on the DESCENDANT Blog Tour. I absolutely love Lesley Livingston’s writing and her characters and I fell madly in love with STARLING when I read it last year. Of course I already adored the Fennrys Wolf when I met him in the author’s Wondrous Strange series. So I kind of already knew I’d love this new series before I read word one.

And while I haven’t yet finished reading DESCENDANT at the time of this post’s creation, I can say with certainty that this follow-up is even more epic than the first book in the series. For those of you who have already read STARLING, just check out the description and you’ll see just how much more epic DESCENDANT promises to be. And for those of you who haven’t, perhaps you’ll want to take a peek at the first few pages of STARLING as they’re rather eye-opening.

    Anyway….

For my tour stop today I had the chance to ask the Fennrys Wolf a few questions. It may have been more than a few, but Fenn didn’t seem to mind too much. At least I hope he didn’t. It was such a fun interview to conduct and I loved his answers and just had to respond to a few of them.

The interview follows below the book details and links to places you can find it online. I’ve also included some information in this post about Lesley Livingston and STARLING, the first book in this series, which has its very own book trailer that I may have watched one or two or several times.

There is also an awesome giveaway included with this tour. Details on that are toward the end of the post. So be sure to check it out.

And finally, I included the full tour schedule with direct links to tour posts at stops prior to this one at the very bottom of this post. So if you’d like to read a few reviews, check out an interview or two, or see what else the author and her characters did at the other stops on the tour, be sure to check them out.

    Oh….

And if you’re in Toronto tomorrow, August 27th, Lesley Livingston will reading and signing books at The Dominion on Queen. More details can be found on her BLOG.

    And yes…

I will be super jealous if anyone can go.

Release Date: August 27th – tomorrow
    Publisher: HarperTeen
    Pages: 336
    Formats: Hardcover, Audio, eBook

The last thing Mason Starling remembers is the train crossing a bridge. An explosion . . . a blinding light . . . then darkness. Now she is alone, stranded in Asgard—the realm of Norse legend—and the only way for her to get home is to find the Spear of Odin, a powerful relic left behind by vanished gods.

The Fennrys Wolf knows all about Asgard. He was once trapped there. And he’ll do whatever it takes to find the girl who’s stolen his heart and bring her back—even if it means a treacherous descent into the Underworld. But time is running out, and Fenn knows something Mason doesn’t: If she takes up the Spear, she’ll set in motion a terrible prophecy. And she won’t just return to her world . . . she’ll destroy it.

In this pulse-pounding sequel to Starling, Lesley Livingston delivers another electrifying blend of nonstop action and undeniable romance that will leave readers breathless.

    The Interview

    with the Fennrys Wolf

    Q. How would you describe yourself to someone who hasn’t yet had the pleasure of meeting you?

That it’s only a pleasure if you aren’t in my way, on the wrong side, or trying to mess with the people I care about. There aren’t many of those, so I tend to get very cranky when that happens. As for some kind of physical description? I think my buddy Rafe put it nicely when he told me: “Remember when I said you looked like nine miles of bad road? You’re into double digits now.”

Fiktshun: I will definitely try and stay on your good side. Though I do have a question or two that may *gulp* toe that line. And I’m not so sure that’s Rafe putting it nicely….

    florals_001

    Q. What would you say is your best attribute? And you can only choose one.

My easygoing, blithe disposition. And my sword arm. Yeah, I know. You said I could only choose one. My very best attribute? I don’t follow rules very well.

Fiktshun: I knew you wouldn’t be able to stick to the rules. I am not surprised. At all.

    florals_001

    Q. You made quite an entrance in STARLING. Are there any scenes or moments in DESCENDANT that are quite as appealing… I mean revealing? If so, details would be lovely.

I’m not sure I know what you mean. I will say this though: my lifestyle is hell on a wardrobe. And I owe Rafe a shirt.

Fiktshun: Oh I think you do, Fenn, I think you do. But oooh.

    florals_001

    Q. In STARLING you and Mason have to take up arms to battle a number of threats. Is there just as much swordplay in this next part of your story as the first or is there more? Has the action heated up?

What can I say? New York, New York, it’s a hell of a town. And as for the rest of it – Asgard and Aaru and the Between and all that East River nasty business – it isn’t always a sword you find yourself on the wrong end of. Sometimes it’s teeth. Or talons. And anyway, I always start to lose count of the scraps I get in once I get past half-a-dozen or so. At least Mase doesn’t stab me this time. Of course, she’s not the only one walking around with pointy implements…

Fiktshun: You just can’t seem to catch a break in New York City. First all of that trouble with Sonny and Kelley. Now this situation with Mase. Life is not easy for you, is it Fenn? But I’m glad to hear that Mase doesn’t stab you this time around.

    florals_001

    Q. What can we expect from the Fennrys Wolf in DESCENDANT?

Pants. The unexpected. Probably periodic mayhem. Beyond that? You’ll have to ask Mason.

Fiktshun: See? I knew you knew what I was asking about a couple of questions ago. But I do enjoy the unexpected. And as long as it’s not happening to me, I enjoy mayhem. So I am up for whatever you have planned.

    florals_001

    Q. What was the moment you knew that you were falling for Mason?

Might have been when she buried three inches of cold steel in my shoulder…

Fiktshun: Aww, you’re a true romantic at heart.

    florals_001

    Q. And what do you think is Mason’s best attribute?

That she seems willing to put up with my worst.

Fiktshun: That is a great attribute. Not everyone would be quite as willing.

    florals_001

    Q. What would you do to protect Mason? What do you think you’ll have to do to keep her safe?

What would I do? Do you mean how far am I willing to go? I’m just going to give you my best stone cold stare and assume you can extrapolate from that.

As for what I think I’ll have to do? I don’t like to overanalyze a situation before I’m already ass-deep in alligators. Or, in this case, crocodiles. And I think it would be dangerous to underestimate Mason Starling. One of these days, she might just be the one doing the saving.

Fiktshun: *Shudders.* Message received loud and clear. Crocodiles? Uh oh…. And I would never underestimate Mason Starling. However, even the strongest, including Mase, need a savior now and again.

    florals_001

    Q. If you got the chance to do one thing over again what would it be? And why?

I wouldn’t just break his arm. I think you know who I mean. Why? I think the answer’s fairly obvious…

Fiktshun: I know exactly what you mean. No further explanation is necessary.

    florals_001

    Q. Do you think there will be a happily ever after for you? For Mason? For you AND Mason? If so, what would that be?

I don’t know that I necessarily deserve one. Mason damn well does, though. And if her version of happily ever after includes me, then you can take it to the bank that I’m going to make that happen. I’m going to try, at least.

What would that be? It’s up to her. Me? Honestly… I’m not sure if I believe in the whole “ever after” thing. But the “happily” part? I’d settle for a midnight walk through a park, holding Mason Starling’s  hand, on a night where nothing tries to kill us. That would be heaven.

Fiktshun: I certainly hope Mason’s HEA includes you. Otherwise I will have to have words with her. You totally deserve one. Believe it or not you are a hero, Fenn. And awwww, the walk through the park sounds super romantic. Although if you mean Central Park, in NYC, well… that park seems to be a magnet for trouble. Maybe Battery Park instead?

    Quickie Questions

    Favorite weapon…

    Anything sharp.

    Favorite song…

If it’s got a beat I can fight to, I’m good.

    Favorite food…

I’m still waiting for my burger and Blue Moon beer.

Favorite move… (I’m referring to fighting of course.)

Of course you are. I find that a punch in the mouth with a fist holding a dagger usually works. Especially if the thing you’re punching has lots of nasty breakable teeth.

    Favorite memory…

I’m just happy to have any of the damn things these days. I’m not gonna play favorites.

    Faeries or Norse gods…

    Equal pains in my ass.

    Fighting or kissing…

    Fighting. Then kissing.

    Kelley or Mason…

    You’re kidding, right?

    ***

Fiktshun: Thank you so much for taking a few minutes away from taking care of Mason… or having her look after you… to answer my questions. You are welcome back any time. Any time at all….

And I promise you, I was not at all kidding about that last one. After all, I haven’t yet heard about what went down in DESCENDANT. Yet….

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #139

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of August 27th-September 2nd that I have pre-ordered.

    05

    Crown of Midnight

    addtogoodreads

CROWN OF MIDNIGHT by Sarah J. Maas will be released in the U.S. on August 27, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Bloomsbury USA Childrens, the print edition is 432 pages.

CROWN OF MIDNIGHT is the second full-length book in author Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series. The third through sixth full-length books, currently untitled, are slated for release in 2014 through 2017.

    Line_001

I cannot wait for the release of CROWN OF MIDNIGHT by Sarah J. Maas on Tuesday. I own all of the previous books in the series, including the novellas, and I’m totally stoked that this latest installment in the series will be added to my collection this week.

I have heard this sequel is even more amazing than the first book in the series and I’m excited to see what happens with Celaena now that she’s the new royal assassin. The description hints that she’s going to have to have to make a choice. I only hope it isn’t between Prince Dorian and Captain Westfall.

I really wanted to read this book before its release, as I had an eARC, but I wasn’t able to. Though I will definitely be reading it next week as I am dying to find out what happens in this sequel.

    div1

    The Bitter Kingdom

    addtogoodreads

THE BITTER KINGDOM by Rae Carson will be released in the U.S. on August 27, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Greenwillow Books, the print edition is 448 pages.

THE BITTER KINGDOM is the third and final full-length book in author Rae Carson’s Fire and Thorns trilogy.

    Line_001

I cannot believe that release day is just about here for THE BITTER KINGDOM. I am reading the previous book in the series and hope to sneak this on the pile just after its release this week. But as it is a series-ending book I’m not trusting my ability to say goodbye to this awesome series.

The description calls this series epic, and I couldn’t agree more. I love the world that author Rae Carson built and I love Elisa and Hector.

I hope that this series has a happily ever after ending, though, given just how heartbreaking the events in book one were, I’m not entirely confident about that.

If I can’t get it on the pile later this week, I will definitely try to conquer my series-ending fears and read it next weekend. And I won’t take a peek at this book’s description until I finish THE CROWN OF EMBERS.

    div1

    Origin

    addtogoodreads

ORIGIN by Jennifer L. Armentrout will be released in the U.S. on August 27, 2013 in paperback, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in paperback and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Entangled Teen, the print edition is 400 pages.

ORIGIN is the fourth full-length book in author Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Lux series. The fifth book in the series, currently untitled, is slated for release in 2014.

    Line_001

I am so excited for the release of ORIGIN and can’t wait for it to download to my Kindle this week. I am a little bit behind on this series due to a mishap which involved reading the ending of book three and so I’m hoping that now that the fourth book in the series is out, the element of the unknown will motivate me to dive back in.

I love these characters and the author’s writing style. I am fascinated by the world. And as much as I want to take a peek at ORIGIN’s description, I refuse to, in the event I might potentially encounter another spoiler.

I feel like it’s been forever since I last read about Katy and Daemon and I hope that after things quiet down in mid-September I’ll be able to read both this book and the previous book, so that I can get caught up.

    div1

    The Beginning of Everything

    addtogoodreads

THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING by Robyn Schneider will be released in the U.S. on August 27, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Katherine Tegen Books, the print edition is 352 pages.

    Line_001

I am totally stoked to finally get a copy of THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING. I’d hoped to get my hands on an early copy but then the release date changed and so did this book’s title. But the wait is almost over until I can finally take a peek at this story that’s intrigued me for quite a long while.

I am just so curious about Ezra and his theory about everyone having a tragedy waiting for them. His particular tragedy is very similar to someone I’ve known, so I already feel a connection with the story. But I cannot wait to meet Cassidy Thorpe, too.

The description calls this book “lyrical, witty, and heart-wrenching” and if it is all those things I just know I’ll fall madly in love with this story that I hope to be able to sneak onto the pile over Labor Day weekend.

    div1

    Consume

    addtogoodreads

CONSUME by Melissa Darnell will be released in the U.S. on August 27, 2013 in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin Teen, the print edition is 384 pages.

CONSUME is the third book in author Melissa Darnell’s Clann series.

    Line_001

Melissa Darnell’s Clann series is such a sweet and delightful read and I am thrilled to be able to add CONSUME to my collection this week. I had the chance to read this book just a bit early and it was just as entertaining as the previous books in the series.

As I have read it, I don’t want to talk about what happens with Tristan and Savannah in this installment. I won’t reveal just what happens with the Clann and the vampires. But it was a super quick and engaging read and a great addition to the series.

And with all the new YA books releasing this week, I’m so glad I had the chance to read this already and it won’t be stuck on an ever-expanding TBR pile.

    div1

    Deception

    addtogoodreads

DECEPTION by C.J. Redwine will be released in the U.S. on August 27, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Balzer + Bray, the print edition is 480 pages.

DECEPTION is the second book in author C.J. Redwine’s Defiance series.

    Line_001

I love, love, love this series. I only just recently read DEFIANCE a month or two ago and am going to be reading DECEPTION on Monday and I cannot wait. I will probably switch from the printed ARC to my Kindle copy when it downloads at Monday Midnight so I can read that much faster.

I fell in love with Rachel and Logan’s story and the world that author C.J. Redwine created. Their story is captivating and heartbreaking and when I put DEFIANCE down I wished I’d had the sequel to dive right into.

Of course now that release day is just about here, I’m getting a bit nervous as to whether there is another book in the series and whether it will be that much more agonizing to wait an entire year for that book. Though I’m pretty sure it will.

My plan is to read this on Monday and even though it is a fairly lengthy book, I’m confident I’ll be able to finish it in one sitting, even if it means a late night read.

DESCENDANT is the second book in Lesley Livingston’s Starling series.

    Line_001

I am currently reading DESCENDANT and I will definitely have it read before it downloads to my Kindle on Monday Midnight. It was just so easy to fall back into this story and into this world of Norse mythologies, Mason Starling and the Fennrys Wolf.

I love Lesley Livingston’s stories and I immediately fell in love with the first book in this spin-off series that includes one of my most favorite characters from her Wondrous Strange series, Fenn. After that cliffhanger ending in STARLING, I didn’t think I’d survive the wait for DESCENDANT’s release. But thanks to a slightly early finished copy I didn’t have to wait quite as long.

Of course the longer it takes me to write this post, the longer I’ll have to wait to get back reading. So I will just say that this sequel sounds even more action-packed than the first, I am totally thrilled about the journey into the Underworld and I am super curious whether the ending of this second book in the series will leave me dangling off a cliff.

    The Liberator

    addtogoodreads

THE LIBERATOR by Victoria Scott will be released in the U.S. on August 27, 2013 in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Entangled Teen, the print edition is 352 pages.

THE LIBERATOR is the second book in author Victoria Scott’s Dante Walker series.

    Line_001

I am totally stoked that Dante… I mean THE LIBERATOR is releasing this week. I fell madly in love with the first book in the series and its adorable heroine and bad-boy hero – yes Dante is a hero.

I was lucky enough to get a peek at this story just a little bit early. And as I mentioned in My Reading Pile this past weekend I will be finishing this book on Tuesday. So this won’t be on the TBR pile for very long at all. Which is a good thing, as I don’t think that Dante has very much patience.

And as I spotlighted this in my Book Watch post a couple of weeks ago, I really don’t want to ramble on any longer. Especially as this post is super long with all the new releases that are being added to my collection this week and the many that are under consideration.

Besides, it’s Dante Walker, need I really say anything more?

    Don't Look Now

    addtogoodreads

DON’T LOOK NOW by Michelle Gagnon will be released in the U.S. on August 27, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperCollins, the print edition is 336 pages.

DON’T LOOK NOW is the second full-length book in author Michelle Gagnon’s PERSEFoNE series.

    Line_001

I am super excited for the release of DON’T LOOK NOW, the second book in author Michelle Gagnon’s trilogy. While I haven’t yet had the chance to read the first book in the series, I do own it and the novella and I cannot wait to add this book to my collection this week.

This series sounds totally like my kind of read – packed with action, danger, thrills and excitement. And I cannot wait to finally meat Noa and Peter.

As I haven’t yet read the first book in the series I tried hard not to look too closely at this sequel’s description, but I did catch the very bold words “jaw-dropping” when I was grabbing the book’s link on Goodreads. Which made me that much more interested in meeting the characters and discovering this story for myself.

I am still going to try and hold out until closer to the release date for the third book in the series before I dive into these books. But I have a feeling that I’ll only last until October before my curiosity gets the best of me.

    The Fall of Five

THE FALL OF FIVE by Pittacus Lore will be released in the U.S. on August 27, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperCollins, the print edition is 416 pages.

THE FALL OF FIVE is the fourth full-length book in the Lorien Legacies.

    Line_001

I cannot believe that THE FALL OF FIVE, the fourth book in this series, is releasing this week. I pre-ordered a copy for my Kindle the second I saw it on Amazon even though I’m officially so far behind on this series that I really shouldn’t buy another installment without catching up.

And while I’ve only read the first book in this series and part of the second, I have taken a peek at each and every description. And I’m not going to change my approach for this fourth book.

I love that this installment has all six survivors banding together to defeat their enemy. I love that they’re going to try and “master their Legacies” so that they stand a chance against the Mogadorians. And I am curious to find out whether Number Five’s sign is really a trap and whether the Garde will be able to find Five “before it’s too late.”

The description promises that the Lorien will rise again. It promises that they will not lose the war. I am hoping that this installment lives up to its promises. And I’m hoping to be able to finally catch up on this series before the next installment is released.

    The Dark Between

    addtogoodreads

THE DARK BETWEEN by Sonia Gensler will be released in the U.S. on August 27, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Knopf Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 352 pages.

    Line_001

When I saw Sonia Gensler’s latest release, THE DARK BETWEEN, available for pre-order I immediately clicked to order it for my Kindle. In addition to the awesome title and the super creepy cover, the book’s description sounded amazing.

I love the early twentieth century setting. I love that this story is dubbed “[a] supernatural romance about the powers that lie in the shadows of the mind.” And I can’t wait to meet Elsie, Kate and Asher and find out whether it’s a villain or something “otherworldly” that is responsible for the dead body they discover.

I am always totally creeped out by stories of ghosts and spirits, in a good way, of course. And the idea that there may be something more to this story has me intrigued.

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get this on the pile in September, but this sounds like a perfect story to read at the end of October.

    Here Without You

    addtogoodreads

HERE WITHOUT YOU by Tammara Webber will be released in the U.S. on August 27, 2013 in paperback format and was previously released in eBook format on August 6th. It is currently available to pre-order online at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE in paperback format and is available to order online now in eBook format.

Self-published, the print edition is 252 pages.

HERE WITHOUT YOU is the fourth and final book in author Tammara Webber’s Between the Lines series.

    Line_001

I had no idea until the week prior to the eBook release of HERE WITHOUT YOU that Tammara Webber was concluding her Between the Lines series. And while I already have the Kindle copy in my collection, I’ve been trying to list releases based upon their print release date. Which is why I’m just posting about this now.

This series is amazing. I knew from the moment I read the first book in the series that this author was insanely talented. She had such a way with words and gave me a story – and series – that blew me away. I did not expect the layers of depth in her story, I did not expect to make such a strong emotional connection to it. But I did.

I thought it was just going to be a light and fun series, but it was dramatic and heart-wrenching and gorgeous.

I have not yet read this final installment to the series. It is one of those series I don’t want to see end. Just thinking about the fact that I’ll have to say goodbye to these characters is making me teary-eyed.

So I’m not sure when I’m going to be able to say goodbye to it. Even though I am super curious about what happens with Reid and Dori. But I am hopeful I’ll get the courage up later this fall.

As this post is insanely long already I’m going to keep this section brief. Or at least I’ll try to be brief….

I can’t believe I will be the owner of all twelve releases I’ve spotlighted by Monday Midnight. This makes me both excited and nervous about the size of my TBR pile.

And with twenty-one other books releasing this week that caught my eye, I’m thinking I should have budgeted just a little bit more for books this week, as I just know I’ll be clicking to buy a few of them.

While next week may not be as “bad” as this week, I know of at least six books I’m adding to my collection next week already. So it’s very possible I have just as many, if not more, books pre-ordered that will be releasing next week. *GULP.*

Fortunately I have read one of the books releasing this week already, and will hopefully have four others read by the end of the week. But that, for now, remains to be determined.

    Anyway….

I promised to keep this short – for me – so I will just end by saying that I hope you have a few books, or more, releasing this week that will be added to your collection. And I hope that your TBR pile won’t be quite as crazy as mine will be over the next two or three weeks.

And if there is a YA title I’ve missed, please let me know in the comments… though I’ll be a little scared if there is.

As ever, happy reading and happy book buying!

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

    My Reading Pile #128

I received a couple of the books I was waiting on in the mail this week. One of which is actually for a giveaway, the other is one that’s going on the pile like yesterday.

I was hoping one or two other books would arrive this week, but perhaps next week will be the week. We shall see….

    My Reading Pile 128

[Credit for mailbox sharing goes to The Story Siren]

I received a finished copy of DESCENDANT by Lesley Livington on Thursday thanks to the awesome folks at HarperTeen for the tour I’m on this coming Monday. While my stop isn’t a review stop I’m super excited to have this book in hand a few days before its release.

I also received a copy of HELP FOR THE HAUNTED by John Searles for giveaway thanks to the team at William Morrow. I’d assisted in spreading the word about the sweepstakes as this book sounded awesome, so they sent me a copy for giveaway on the blog. Of course I’d really love to read it, but I suppose I’ll have to wait for its release on September 17th.

I did not go trolling on NetGalley or Edelweiss this week, so those two books are the only books I received. So far… I haven’t checked NetGalley for this post just yet…. But for now…

Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.

First up on the pile is DESCENDANT by Lesley Livington. I received a finished hardcopy for review from the publisher, HarperTeen, for the blog tour I’m on this week. While I don’t have a review stop for the tour, I always love to read the book prior to creating my post.

And while I may have received this pretty close to my tour date, I am definitely going to be reading it this weekend before writing up my post on Sunday night. Without a doubt. Because I’ve heard this book is even better than STARLING and I’m dying to find out what happens next. Things left off on a bit of a cliffhanger – and by “bit” I mean a steep and endless cliff – so I’m anxious to find out just what happens with Mason and Fenn.

I did take a long peek at the description and ever since then I’ve been so excited to get this book on the pile. And while it may be just a little bit later than I’d hoped, it just means the wait for the next book in the series will be shorter… at least I hope there’s a next book….

    The Liberator

    addtogoodreads

Next up on the pile is THE LIBERATOR by Victoria Scott. I actually started reading this awesome book a week or so ago, but due to life stuffs I had to hold off on finishing it. But now that it’s officially on the pile I can’t wait to see what happens with Dante, Charlie and Aspen.

I am a little wary about meeting Aspen. I adore Charlie and I’d hate to see the new girl come between her and Dante. I’d also hate to see her tempt Dante with her bad girl ways. But if the description holds true, she will definitely be doing the latter and possibly the former.

I loved getting to know both Dante and Charlie in the first book in this series and I know I’m going to love reading about them in this sequel. I just hope that there will be some happy moments amidst the angst-filled ones. And I hope that their love story won’t take too much of a turn for the worse.

As I hope to finish reading the first book on the pile before the weekend ends, I hope that I can devour this book on Monday. My fingers are most definitely crossed.

Saving the love of her life could mean letting her inner darkness out to play.

    Bad boy, meet bad girl.

Dante has a shiny new cuff wrapped around his ankle, and he doesn’t like that mess one bit. His new accessory comes straight from Big Guy himself and marks the former demon as a liberator. Despite his gritty past and bad boy ways, Dante Walker has been granted a second chance.

When Dante is given his first mission as a liberator to save the soul of seventeen-year-old Aspen, he knows he’s got this. But Aspen reminds him of the rebellious life he used to live and is making it difficult to resist sinful temptations. Though Dante is committed to living clean for his girlfriend Charlie, this dude’s been a playboy for far too long…and old demons die hard.

With Charlie becoming the girl she was never able to be pre-makeover and Aspen showing him how delicious it feels to embrace his inner beast, Dante will have to go somewhere he never thought he’d return to in order to accomplish the impossible: save the girl he’s been assigned to, and keep the girl he loves.

    Wishful Thinking Reads:

I am dying to read THE WAKING DARK by Robin Wasserman. From the title to the description this book sounds like my kind of book. So dark. So creepy. So perfect. Even just the lines, “As the town begins its descent into blood and madness…” give me the chills.

Even though I have an early eARC for review, I have a few books I must read before I can even consider sneaking it onto the pile. So for now reading it is just a wish I have.

    Line_001

    Those Left Behind:

Once again I’ve managed to leave everything behind. Though I will be reading DECEPTION this weekend and hopefully reading BLOOD OF AN ANCIENT on Wednesday. I finally managed to get myself out of my fifteen day reading slump by going off-pile to read THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS by Gena Showalter which I love, love, loved.

But I am eager to read both of the books on the pile this week and catch up on last week’s pile and the pile from the week before that, too. I just need to find some time to read between blogging and Authors Are Rockstars Tour.

Hopefully, once that tour ends, and the few tours I’m working on for Rockstar Book Tours get sorted, I’ll be able to get my focus back on writing reviews. Though I’m still debating on whether or not to change up the style to make them a little less challenging for me to write.

I love blogging, I love reading and I love talking about books. But I still haven’t quite found a way to write a review that makes me love doing so.

As I have so many review books in the queue, and there are a ton of new releases I’m dying to read, hopefully I’ll find the time to get lost in at least a few books this week, even if the reads don’t end up resulting in reviews.

I am. As always. Ever hopeful.

    NetGalley Pile Adds & Finds:

I only took a quick peek at NetGalley this week. In part because I don’t have much time this morning to browse. In part because I’m afraid I’ll request a new title.

Though I did get a “read now” title this week, that I completely forgot about, when I received the newsletter. It was…

WAITING TO CATCH FIRE promotional eGalley by Kat Falls, Jeff Hirsch and Suzanne Weyn (Scholastic, Aug 20 2013)

It includes INHUMAN by Kat Falls, chapters from THE DARKEST PATH by Jeff Hirsch and chapters from THE BAR CODE PROPHECY by Suzanne Weyn.

    ***

And while I didn’t have too much time to browse around, I did find a few awesome-sounding titles that I may request one or two of. And they are…

BZRK RELOADED (Bzrk #2) by Michael Grant (Egmont USA, Oct 8 2013)

MORE THAN GOOD ENOUGH by Crissa-Jean Chappell (Flux, Jan 8 2014)

HERO WORSHIP by Christopher E. Long (Flux, Jan 8 2014)

    Div01

I spent much of last weekend moving my posts from The Annex on Blogger to The Annex on WordPress. I retired that blog and planned on simply transferring and keeping the posts housed here on Fiktshun which I back up fairly regularly. But I just couldn’t stop myself from reformatting them all, and well, that took all of last weekend and the early part of last week. So I got very little reading done and very little blogging, too.

Thankfully that’s over and the act of doing something that mind-numbing seems to have broken me out of my reading slump and I dove right into THROUGH THE ZOMBE GLASS and fell back in love with Ali, Cole, Kat, Frosty, Bronx, Reeve and Nana. (Yes! I remember their names.) Hopefully this weekend will be as productive, though I’m headed out for the day and later will be going to the movies to see “City of Bones.” So we shall see. It may prompt me to want to re-read the first three books in The Mortal Instruments.

I don’t anticipate writing any reviews this week, as I have quite a few posts to create for upcoming tours. But, who knows? Now that the Authors Are Rockstars Tour is winding down, maybe my review-writing capabilities will return to me.

Anyway… even though my lack of success is astounding, I hope that you have had and will have a successful reading week. If you’d like to share the books on your pile, I’d love to hear about them in the comments. And if you’ve received a few awesome titles to read and review I’d love to hear about them too.

    Happy reading!

    The topic for today is…

    Best Book Boyfriends of 2012

The rules insist that they be books that I not only read in 2012 but that were released in 2012… but… well, I’m not exactly one for sticking to the rules. (Last year, for my Top 10 Book Boyfriends in 2011 list, I had nearly twice the honorable mentions as I did book boyfriends. Yeah. So much for rules.)

I mean, I can’t just leave off a few of my favorite book boyfriends just because I read their books early or read them a little bit late, can I? Noooo. I can’t do that.

But I have decided to limit it to just one boy per book – which almost always means the bad boy. Sorry Az, Will, Adam, Jack….

And because I’ve taken the plunge and spent a little too much time reading non-YA releases, I just had to create a book boyfriends post on my non-YA blog. Because there is just no WAY I could leave those darker, sexier, older book boyfriends out of the mix this year.. Though all I can say is that I am so relieved that I did not devour all the books in Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series… yet….

Next year is going to be so tough.

    Book-Boyfriends

    1.

    Before I WakeTod

Good boy or bad boy: Good… most of the time

Favorite characteristics: Angelic in appearance with a devilish personality, sarcastic, charming

Best line: Too many to count, but here’s one…

“I’m well aware.” Tod sat up and pulled me up with him until we faced each other on my bed. “Forever used to feel like a curse. Now it feels like a promise,” he said, and my chest ached, and I loved that feeling–that rare pain that came from feeling too much, so different from the emptiness I’d almost gotten used to. “All you have to do is stay here with me.”

Why he won: Do you have to ask?

Won out over: His terribly flawed younger brother Nash Hudson

Book Read in 2012: BEFORE I WAKE by Rachel Vincent

    2.

    Destroy MeWarner

Good boy or bad boy: Bad… except when it comes to… nope, not going to reveal that here

Favorite characteristics: Sexy, broken, redeemable… I hope

    Best line:

I almost forget that she still hates me, despite how hard I’ve fallen for her.
    And I’ve fallen.
    So hard.
I’ve hit the ground. Gone right through it. Never in my life have I felt this. Nothing like this. I’ve felt shame and cowardice, weakness and strength. I’ve known terror and indifference, self-hate and general disgust. I’ve seen things that cannot be unseen.

And yet I’ve known nothing like this terrible, horrible, paralyzing feeling. I feel crippled. Desperate and out of control. And it keeps getting worse. Every day I feel sick. Empty and somehow aching.

    Love is a heartless bastard.

Why he won: Because he breaks my heart. And yet he’s just so broken. Hero potential

Won out over: Adam, who while incredibly sexy and just so perfect, might be a little too perfect

Book Read in 2012: DESTROY ME, UNRAVEL ME by Tahereh Mafi

    3.

    SplinteredMorpheus a.k.a. Moth

Good boy or bad boy: Bad boy

    Honorable-Mentions

Gavriel Duval from Robin LaFever’s GRAVE MERCY – an absolutely swoon-worthy hero. But maybe just a little too good to make my list of bad boy book boyfriends.

Elliott and Will from Bethany Griffin’s MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH – it was because the two were so equally matched and I couldn’t choose between them that they didn’t make the Top Ten List. I still don’t know who’d be more right for Araby.

Colt from Karsten Knight’s EMBERS & ECHOES – only an honorable mention because I can’t reveal just how amazing he really is.

Daemon from Jennifer L. Armentrout’s ONYX – drop-dead gorgeous, totally swoon-y, super sexy, stubborn, jealous. Would have… should have… made the list. Why am I restricted to only 10? It’s like these lists want me to stop reading!

    Review: Starling

Starling by Lesley Livingston was released in the U.S. on August 28, 2012 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in all formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 352 pages.

Starling is the first book in a new series of the same name by the author.

    Goodreads description:

Mason Starling is a champion fencer on the Gosforth Academy team, but she’s never had to fight for her life. Not until the night a ferocious, otherworldly storm rips through Manhattan, trapping Mason and her teammates inside the school. Mason is besieged by nightmarish creatures more terrifying than the thunder and lightning as the raging tempest also brings a dangerous stranger into her life: a young man who remembers nothing but his name–the Fennrys Wolf. His arrival tears Mason’s world apart, even as she feels an undeniable connection to him. Together, they seek to unravel the secrets of Fenn’s identity as strange and supernatural forces gather around them. When they discover Mason’s family–with its dark allegiance to ancient Norse gods–is at the heart of the mystery, Fennrys and Mason are suddenly faced with a terrifying future.

Set against the gritty, shadowed back-drop of New York City, this first novel in award-winning author Lesley Livingston’s epic Starling Saga is an intoxicating blend of sweeping romance and pulse-pounding action.

    ***

STARLING is an exciting and action-packed adventure, with a fierce heroine, an even fiercer hero, shocking twists and turns and an ending that will make you desperate to get your hands on the next book in the series.

The story instantly pulls you in, introduces you to the world and nearly tears it apart, all within the first few pages. It’s fast-paced, it’s wildly entertaining, it’s got more than a little sizzle, and it will be impossible to put down until you’ve met every deadly threat and witnessed every intense battle.

I know I was riveted. Right from the start. All through the middle. To the very last word.

STARLING was everything I hoped it would be and then some. It was just as captivating and magical as the author’s Wondrous Strange series. The characters were just as engaging. And it was just so easy to get lost in the story, get tangled up in Mason Starling’s world which was turned completely upside down the moment the Fennrys Wolf crashed into her life.

Literally. Without a stitch of clothing on. Not. One. Stitch. And boy does he make a lasting first impression. Of course I’m talking about his ability to handle a sword, slay horrifying creatures and protect a group of otherwise helpless students and one ex-military fencing instructor. What did you think I meant?

I fell right back into Lesley Livingston’s version of New York City with its otherworldly beings plotting and scheming and biding their time waiting to break through and take over. And even though some time had passed since I’d last visited this world she created, I was immediately ensnared.

I was excited to meet this new character, Mason, discover the world through her eyes, and see just what role she would play. I was even more thrilled about seeing the Fennrys Wolf again, as he was one of my favorite characters in the author’s other series. The fact that he was to be a more central character to the story was what drew me to STARLING in the first place.

While it typically takes me quite some time to warm up to new characters an author creates, that was not the case with STARLING. I instantly liked Mason. She was competitive, more than a little bit fierce and was someone who was willing to go out on a limb for someone else. That she chose to take a chance on Fenn made her that much more endearing.

Lesley Livingston’s new series is incredibly addictive. Having just the one book to read won’t be enough. With all the secrets and lies it’s impossible to know who to trust. And with the mystery surrounding the Fennrys Wolf’s amnesia, even he can’t be trusted. Though you really want to trust him.

Filled with nail-biting chases and battles throughout the city, sword-fighting practices that sizzle, intriguing mythology that will make you want to know more, dark secrets that will leave you anxious for the safety of the characters you connect with, and an ending that will leave you hanging on the edge of your seat, STARLING is the start of a series not to be missed.

And if I had to pinpoint just a few highlights from this book that stood out, aside from the very charismatic, sarcastic and egotistical Fennrys Wolf, aside from the rather chilling Norse mythology that plays a huge role in this story, aside from the intense battles, electrifying chemistry and the dark twists and turns the story takes before it reaches its end, I would have to say the easy flow to the author’s writing, the darkly enchanting and magical world she built, the well-developed and compelling characters she created, and the cliff she leaves you stranded on.

    Reviewer gives this book…

    Favorite passage:

Just about every passage that involved the Fennrys Wolf was a favorite, which made it really hard to choose. And while Fenn’s introduction to the story is one that is at the top of the list, it is just a bit too long to include here.

So I chose one that doesn’t give away too much, yet reveals quite a bit about Fenn, and makes me grin every single time I read it.

    “I’m scared, Fenn.”

“I know, Mase,” he said quietly. “Would it help at all if I told you I was scared too?”

She twisted around and looked up at him. “No,” she said seriously. “Not even a little bit.”

“Good. ‘Cause I’m not.” He grinned. “Not even a little bit.”

    Book trailer:

I happen to be a huge fan of book trailers. And this one is seriously wicked awesome. Sword-fighting. Kissing. And the Fennrys Wolf. Doesn’t get much better than that.
