A MAD ZOMBIE PARTY Blog Tour: ‘Character Phobia’ Guest Post + Giveaway

I am so excited to be a part of the A MAD ZOMBIE PARTY Blog Tour hosted by Kismet Book Touring. I love, love, LOVE this series and was over the moon that it did not end with THE QUEEN OF ZOMBIE HEARTS.

I may have been a little late to the party – I only just got the chance to devour this installment – but OMG this book. So many, many feels. It was thrilling. And nerve-wracking. And heartbreaking. And maddening. And holy wow, was it sexy.

I never thought that I could like Camilla Marks. But that happened. I never thought things could get worse for the slayers. But that happened too. I knew I would be heartbroken for Frosty. I knew I would be reluctant to read about Frosty and anyone other than Kat. I knew I would love getting glimpses at what was going on with Ali and Cole. And I did not think Frosty’s story could as hot as Ali and Cole’s, but yeah, it was.

Anyway… for my stop today I get to share Milla’s phobia. If you asked me how much I loved the idea of hosting Milla before I read A MAD ZOMBIE PARTY it would have been “not at all.” Though I would have loved to have known what she was afraid of so I could wish that whatever it was she feared would come true. Now, though, I am totally stoked to host her. And if you’d like to know what her phobia is, be sure to check out the phobia graphic below.

And if you’d like to know what five other characters’ and six bloggers’ phobias are, be sure to visit the other stops on the tour.

I’d thought about rambling about some of my phobias, but then this post would go on endlessly. I was also afraid to share my list in case someone I knew decided to use my fears against me… hmm… I guess I’ll have to add that to my list of phobias. But I will reveal a couple – fear of fire, fear of spiders… or any insects. *shudders*

There is also an amazing giveaway as part of the tour. If you’d like the chance to win some fab prizes, enter in the Rafflecopter.

Sometimes boy meets girl, and the stars align, and their future is laid out neatly before them. Together forever. Meant to be. But Max and Loren are not one of those couples.

Seventeen-year-old Max DuPont is on the verge of becoming a ward of the state and foster kid. Contrary to expectations, Max is not from the “wrong” side of town. He’s from a good home in a nice neighborhood, but his mother left after his father lost his job and turned to drinking. Max has been struggling to keep his head above water ever since. All he wants is to survive his senior year, play hockey, and move on to college. When his dad lands himself in jail, Max has no choice but to accept an offer to live with his father’s do-gooder attorney, Mr. Larssi. The only contingency is that Max must stay far away from Larssi’s beautiful teenage daughter Loren.

Loren is aware that she’s had every opportunity in her young adult life—at least, that is, every opportunity her parents designed for her. She excels in academics at a competitive prep school, she never parties, she never dates, and she’s a budding ballerina and major hopeful for a Juilliard scholarship. But since her best friend Lily died tragically three months ago, Loren is lost. She knows just how precious life is. But she has no idea how to make the best of it. How can she live—really live—with obsessive parents breathing down her neck…and inviting the only guy who never noticed her to live right under their roof?

Loren’s first step in living her own life might be to get Max to notice her. Max’s only chance at a solid future without foster care is to keep his distance from Loren. But their chemistry is undeniable. And they can’t fight the odds forever.

    The Guest Post

On Max Noticing Lauren for the First Time

    by Patricia Vanasse

Max and Loren are playing Chess, and Max can’t help but notice Loren. He knows that being attracted to her is “not allowed” and that he should obey her dad’s rules since he’s giving him a place to live and treating him like a son. But as Max says: “Once you see Loren, it’s hard not to stare.”

Rule number one broken twice. Good thing Mr. Larssi isn’t here to see me looking at his daughter like this. But once you see Loren, it’s hard not to stare. She’s not the type of girl that makes your head turn. Her beauty is simpler, more delicate. It takes moments like this to slowly look at her and see that every part of her fits perfectly together. Tiny freckles cover the top of her small, pointed nose, her lips are a natural pink shade, and her olive eyes have a shine of their own. Her hair reaches the middle of her back and is a mixture of brown, red, and blonde. I stop here so I won’t get caught looking below her neckline. It’s as perfect as her face.

To the average onlooker, the city of Los Angeles represents glitz, glamour, and the celebrity lifestyle. But to seventeen-year-old Julie Jones, the city is a vast host of problems she’s longing to get away from. The latest? An unfortunate disagreement with her ex-boyfriend Mark—one that could land her in some serious hot water.

So rather than face the troubles that torment her, Julie decides to run away from her old life and start fresh somewhere new. But her parents aren’t on board with the plan, and she soon finds her bank accounts frozen and her wallet empty.

With just seventy-five dollars and a full tank of gas, the troubled teen is far too stubborn to turn around and head home. So what’s a girl to do?

What Julie doesn’t know is that her travels are about to take her somewhere unexpected—a place where she’ll be forced to come face to face with the ghosts of her past in order to secure her future.

A tale of redemption, hope, and freedom lost and found, 32 Seconds is a thought-provoking exploration into the human spirit and the nature of forgiveness.

    The Interview

    Q&A with Johanna Pitcairn

    Q. If you had to describe 32 SECONDS in 32 seconds how would you describe it?

LOL. In 32 words, I could do it easier than 32 Seconds. Okay let’s try. 32 SECONDS is a tale of forgiveness, redemption and hope. Following an ugly breakup, seventeen-year old Julie Jones runs away to start fresh. But her journey to a better life takes her back to the hometown of her youth, where she’ll have to make peace with herself in order to really move on.

    Q. What made Los Angeles the perfect backdrop for 32 SECONDS?

My first thought when I pictured my character and where she lived was – the movies. She had to be in a town where glitz and glamour are omnipresent, to represent the superficiality, the façade, the shell of her personality. LA has also a darker side, which I wanted to show. New York could have worked great, and I usually use New York as the backdrop for all my stories, but in this case, LA was just perfect. It worked with the character’s youth, with her energy, with her love of nature, and with the overall vibe of the story. The movies aren’t real. Life is.

    Q. What was your favorite scene to write in 32 SECONDS and why was it a favorite? And which scene was your most challenging to write and why was it a challenge?

Looking back on the writing process, every scene was a struggle. I’m not going to lie, I put myself through hell to write this book.

But, if I had to pick a favorite scene, I’d probably pick the beginning, when she runs away, and is angry, and feels the whole world is going to fall apart if she doesn’t put a huge distance between LA and herself. That scene sets the rhythm of the book. And then it shifts completely, like an abrupt turn, and the descent begins.

My most challenging scene was the end. I needed to make it epic, and emotional, while not cutting it too short, and omitting important details. I was happy to finish it, read it, and shed a small tear. To me that meant job well done.

    Q. What quote of Julie’s is your favorite?

“Crap will hit the fan faster than a fart in a hurricane.” It just makes me laugh. She has a great sense of humor.

    Q. You talk a little bit about the Manichean philosophy on your site. How have you applied those ideas or principles to 32 SECONDS?

Absolutely. I love the duality of principles of everything in life. 32 SECONDS is no stranger to that. Julie Jones, as the main character, portrays the two facets of the same coin. She’s full of anger, and resentments. She’s stubborn, possessive, extremely defiant and vindictive. But she’s also very loving, sensitive, caring, and generous. We all come with tools, good and bad, and life demands that we make smart use of these tools as we grow. Sometimes, being bad is the answer. Other times, it’s not. Julie learns to accept who she is as a person, and what she’s capable of. The decisions she makes are her own, and she always has a choice.

    Q. If you could offer any advice to Julie before she attempted to run away from her old life to start a new one, what would it be?

Mmm, it’s a tough one. I’d advise her to think before reacting on impulse alone. But that impulse triggered a chain of events that made her finally decide to change for the better. So I’d maybe just tell her to be careful.

    Q. 32 SECONDS’ cover recently got an overhaul. What was the reason for the change? And do you feel the new cover more adequately paints a picture of the story beneath it?

I loved the first cover, and I love the second one. The first cover was a wink at an event that happens at the end of the story. The issue was that this wink didn’t help capture the whole picture, and readers were a bit confused as to what the book was really about. So, when it was mentioned to me that maybe it’d be a good idea to make the cover more “readable”, I agreed and am absolutely thrilled with the result. That cover is gorgeous. A pure work of art. And yes, I do believe it captures the essence of the story perfectly.

    Q. Without revealing any spoilers, can you tell us how the novel’s title, 32 SECONDS, relates to the story or what its significance is within the context of the story?

32 SECONDS refers to this pause between a thought and a decision. For Julie, it takes her 32 seconds to make a choice. And once she’s made that choice, she embraces it fully. It is explained in more details at the end of the book, but in a nutshell, that’s the significance of the number. A deeper approach will also reveal that 32 makes the number 5, and Julie as a character has a lot of the characteristics that the number 5 has in numerology. So it’s a double take – 32 seconds, the pause, and 32 seconds, as Julie, the character.

    Q. What is it that you love most about mysteries, thrillers, horror, urban fantasy and sci-fi? And how does your love of these genres influence your writing?

I love the fantastic element all these genres possess. And I love suspense. A detective novel in a foreign universe gets me to the edge of my seat every time. Horror is great as it brings the darkness to light. Monsters and horrific creatures are very cathartic. To me, a good fiction novel has a little bit of horror, a love story, a mystery, some fantasy, and lots of humor. When I find all that, I’m set.

    Q. You opted against a career in law in favor of one as a writer. After receiving your degree, what made you decide to switch? And given how challenging it can be to work in a creative field vs. a professional one, have you ever looked back and wished you’d tried to juggle both careers or have you never looked back?

Actually, I have a double career. I didn’t opt against a career in law, I just didn’t choose to practice law. I had the choice, and I tried to work as an attorney, but life made me go in a different direction. I still pay the bills with a day job in the legal field though. That being said, I wouldn’t mind having more time for the creative career because the day job just takes a lot of time. And at the end of my day, I don’t have a ton of free time to dedicate to writing, which is sometimes very frustrating. But I have to make do. I love to write, and I am a perfectionist in that regard, because I want to write the best story – to my eyes – and until it’s not there, I keep trying. I don’t set deadlines anymore, because I know I’m not going to stick to them. But I know in my head that a book will get done in a certain timeframe. For instance now I’m working on a trilogy, and I’m writing the whole trilogy before starting to edit. I’m not going to be done this year with it. Probably next year. So a release sometime in 2016 seems doable for me. Anyway, I’ve made peace with myself when I decided to write and publish books. I can’t do everything at once, and I’m okay with that. ☺

    About Johanna Pitcairn

Johanna K. Pitcairn has dreamed of becoming a writer since childhood–authoring her first novel at the age of nine, and countless poems, stories, and screenplays by the age of seventeen. Later, rather than pursuing a career as a director and screenwriter, she decided to go to law school, driven by her father’s opinion that “writing does not pay the bills.”

Ten years later, she moved to New York City, which inspired her to go back to the excitement, wonder, and constant change of being a writer. Pitcairn is a huge fan of psychological-thriller novels and movies, and delves into her hopes, fears, friends, enemies, and everything in between in her own writing.

THE ORIGINALS: THE RESURRECTION Blog Tour + Giveaway – Five Reasons Why Elijah Mikaelson Rocks

Originals_BannerVI am totally stoked to be a part of the Blog tour for THE RESURRECTION, the third book in creator Julie Plec’s The Originals series. I am a huge fan of the television series and have been a fan of its characters ever since I first met them on The Vampire Diaries.

I love, love, LOVE the fact that these books were written so that we can all get to know more about Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah’s lives. And while I haven’t yet had the chance to discover what all went down in THE RISE and THE LOSS, I have read THE RESURRECTION and it is awesome. It comes out in just over a week so those who have been anxiously awaiting its release won’t have to wait much longer.

For my tour stop today I get the chance to talk about Elijah Mikaelson. And what better way to do that than via a top five list. I thought about sharing my top five or ten favorite Elijah quotes from the book and the television series, but I figured if I opted instead to share the reasons why Elijah rocks, I could also include a few of my favorite quotes along with some of the reasons why he’s my favorite Mikaelson.

In addition to the post, there is an amazing tour-wide giveaway. So if you’d like the chance to win, be sure to enter in the Rafflecopter.

And if you haven’t yet heard about this series, the author, or the show and its characters, there is some information about the books and author below, and all sorts of info on the show can be found at The CW.

Five Reasons Why Elijah Mikaelson Rocks

    (source: tumblr)

From the very first moment I met Elijah I knew he would be my favorite Mikaelson. I absolutely adore his brother Klaus and all of his deviousness, ruthlessness, brokenness, but there was just something about Elijah that made him the Mikaelson to root for.

And here are just five of the many, many reasons why…

    1. Elijah is all about family.

    (source: tumblr)

No matter how disappointing, rash, brutal, selfish, dangerous his family is, Elijah can be counted on to fight with them, fight for them, and do what’s best for them even if it isn’t always in his best interest.

    (source: tumblr)

    (source: tumblr)

“You know, difficulties aside, I value my family above everything.” (Elijah to Davina)

    2. Elijah is badass.

    (source: tumblr)

    (source: tumblr)

Just because he appears calm and seems to be the most rational of his siblings, doesn’t mean he can’t kick some ass. And do it with style.

    (source: tumblr)

    Which leads to…

    3. Elijah is one sharp dressed vamp.

    (source: tumblr)

No matter what the occasion, Elijah dresses to the nines – pocket square included.

    (source: tumblr)

And while he may end up bloodied, tattered and torn, he will not hesitate before putting on a suit and tie.

    (source: tumblr)

Whether meeting his temperamental brother for a pow-wow, acting as mediator between the various supernaturals in New Orleans…

    (source: pinterest)

…or spending time with his current love/lust interest, he always dresses his best.

    (source: tumblr)

    Speaking of lovers…

    4. Elijah is a lover not just a fighter.

Klaus may have a reputation with the ladies, but Elijah is by no means a monk. His reputation of being honorable and noble may be the reason why the ladies just can’t seem to keep their hands off of him.

    (source: tumblr)

    (source: tumblr)

And while his heart may have been more recently stolen by the headstrong Hayley, she is not the only woman who has caught his eye during his long, long life.

    (source: tumblr)

Katherine and Gia and Lisette and Alejandra are only just a few of those lucky enough to have known him.

    (source: tumblr)

Though some may see him as a bit of a heartbreaker and others may see him as dangerous by association, they just can’t seem to resist his charm and good looks. (Neither can I.) Or maybe it’s because…

    5. Elijah has a sense of humor.

    (source: tumblr)

While he may look all serious most of the time, he has a subtle sense of humor.

    (source: pinterest)

It may not rival the wicked or wickedly sarcastic sense of humor that Niklaus sports, but it is all the more funny when he does reveal it.

“You don’t look so well.” (Davina to Elijah)
“Well, only this morning I had a mystical dagger embedded in my chest so I’d say I’m holding myself together quite well.” (Elijah to Davina)

“If I’m moving too fast for you, Niklaus, you’re welcome to wait in the car.” (Elijah to Klaus)

Of course there are a ton of other reasons why Elijah rocks my world on screen and on the printed page – his confidence, poise and power, his softer side, his fairness, his desire to be better. These are only just five of the reasons I adore him.

    What about you?

    (source: tumblr)

Are you an Elijah Mikaelson fan? Is he your favorite Mikaelson? Did any of the reasons I listed make your list of reasons why Elijah rocks? In what other ways do you think he is amazing?

New York Times bestselling author Allison Pataki follows up on her critically-acclaimed debut novel, The Traitor’s Wife, with the little-known and tumultuous love story of “Sisi,” the Austro-Hungarian Empress and captivating wife of Emperor Franz Joseph.

The year is 1853, and the Habsburgs are Europe’s most powerful ruling family. With his empire stretching from Austria to Russia, from Germany to Italy, Emperor Franz Joseph is young, rich, and ready to marry.

Fifteen-year-old Elisabeth, “Sisi,” Duchess of Bavaria, travels to the Habsburg court with her older sister, who is betrothed to the young emperor. But shortly after her arrival at court, Sisi finds herself in an unexpected dilemma: she has inadvertently fallen for and won the heart of her sister’s groom. Intrigued by Sisi’s guileless charm and energetic spirit, not to mention her unrivaled beauty, Franz Joseph reneges on his earlier proposal and declares his intention to marry Sisi instead.

Plucked from obscurity and thrust onto the throne of Europe’s most treacherous imperial court, Sisi has no idea what struggles and dangers—and temptations—await her. Sisi upsets political and familial loyalties in her quest to win, and keep, the love of her emperor, her people, and of the world.

With Pataki’s rich period detail and cast of complex, compelling characters, The Accidental Empress offers a captivating glimpse into the bedrooms and staterooms of one of history’s most intriguing royal families, shedding new light on the glittering Habsburg Empire and its most mesmerizing, most beloved “Fairy Queen.”

    The Interview

    Q. In just a few words, what can you tell us about Empress Elisabeth “Sisi” of Austria?

Ah, what a challenge—to use just a few words to describe a figure who was (and remains) larger than life. Sisi was intelligent. She was charismatic. She was beautiful and intelligent and complicated and sensitive. She dreamed big and loved even bigger. She was a figure upon whom “the divine right of kings” belief was thrust, and yet, she was so aware of her own flaws and human frailty. She was like Princess Diana meets Marie Antoinette meets Anne Boleyn meets Catherine the Great, and then some. She was inspiring while also being a tragic figure. She is absolutely beguiling, and someone you definitely want to get to know! I can’t wait for readers of The Accidental Empress to discover the many layers of this complicated and enchanting leading lady from history.

    Q. And what made you choose her to be the focus of your second novel, The Accidental Empress?

Years ago, I was traveling through Austria and Hungary and the Czech Republic with my family. I am Hungarian-American by descent; Pataki is an odd-sounding and, yes, Hungarian last name. The purpose of the family trip was to visit the places from where our relatives had emigrated, almost a century earlier. This took us, then, to the lands of the former Habsburg Empire—the former realm once labeled on maps as Austria-Hungary.

While on this trip, I kept seeing beautiful images of this same young woman. She had this quizzical smile, this rich chestnut hair curled in these elaborate hairdos. I saw her face at every gift shop, museum, even in restaurants and hotels.

I asked someone who she was and the response was that she was “Sisi,” the most beloved of all Habsburg Empresses. I heard just a bit about Sisi’s epic and tragic life—about the legends that she grew her hair to the floor, that she was considered the most beautiful woman in the world, that every other foreign ruler at the time was in love with her.

I read about how Sisi didn’t mean to seduce her sister’s fiancé the emperor, but did, at the age of 15. Just enough to whet my appetite! I went home and dug in, reading everything I could about Sisi’s story; what I found astounded me. Hers is a story of love triangles, love, lust, betrayal, and so much more. It’s an incredibly human story, told against a glittering and beautiful—yet dangerous and duplicitous—backdrop.

    Q. What was your favorite part about writing The Accidental Empress – was it the characters, the time period, being able to expand upon the history?

    All of the above!

In terms of the setting, I could not have been gifted with a richer and more enthralling setting for a novel. Sisi presided over the golden era of the Habsburg Court, in an age that gave us advances in culture and the arts and architecture, as well as advances in science and politics. So this is a world of lavish ball gowns, glittering and gilded palaces, stunning Austrian and Hungarian landscapes and scenery…ah, to go there in the imagination was a pure delight! Plus, Sisi’s family gave us the castle that we all know of as “The Walt Disney Castle.” Her family gave us the waltz and Wagner’s Ring Cycle and Klimt’s paintings. Sisi ruled at the time that a young Doctor named Sigmund Freud was just down the street in Vienna inventing the practice of psychoanalysis. And this reign of Sisi and Franz Joseph takes us right up to the doorstep of World War I. Her heir was the man who was assassinated (Archduke Franz Ferdinand), prompting her husband to declare war and setting off World War I, the greatest armed conflict the world had known to that point.

But perhaps it was the exploration and development of the characters that was even more thrilling. In some ways, this is a fairytale, in that it is the story of a romance and courtship that plucks an innocent young girl from obscurity and puts her on the throne of Europe’s most lavish court. And yet, this is not your typical fairy tale. How could it be—when Empress Sisi and Emperor Franz Joseph and the rest of the characters are based on red-blooded and complicated and real human beings? They have the expectation of “ruling by divine right” and the “anointing of God” and all that. And yet, they are just mortal, flawed people. We can relate to them. We yearn with them and root for them. Sisi and Franz Joseph—not your typical fairy tale lovers!

    Q. The Accidental Empress has quite a different setting than that of your novel, The Traitor’s Wife, and yet both novels have young, fascinating female protagonists. Is it the characters or the time period that draws you in and makes you opt to write the story?

It is the characters, absolutely! But I would be lying if I said that I did not find both settings/time periods absolutely enthralling, too. ☺

Both novels tell the stories of fascinating women from history—women who were leading ladies in their own time, but who have become footnotes in the historical record. A big difference that I would identify is that Peggy Shippen Arnold, in The Traitor’s Wife, was situated wholly within American history and the story of our Revolutionary War, while Sisi is a European leading lady. Another key difference is that Peggy is more of an anti-heroine, while Sisi is the protagonist that we root for and yearn with and relate to.

And yet, in the case of the two novels I’ve published so far, there has been a personal connection for me to the history of each. That is the key for me—that personal connection is what makes me so impassioned to tell that particular story of that particular woman from history.

In my first novel, The Traitor’s Wife, the novel is the story of Peggy Shippen Arnold, the cunning wife of Benedict Arnold and mastermind behind America’s most infamous act of treason. Peggy and Benedict tried to turn West Point Fort over to the British during the Revolution; had they succeeded, the British would have won the war. For me, this story was close to home, quite literally, because I grew up across the river from West Point. As a child I played in Benedict and Peggy Arnold’s yard. I knew the land and the history and I felt theirs was a story that needed to be told in a historical fiction novel.

And then, when it came to the story of Sisi, it was my family’s heritage in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, as I explained above.

    Q. What was your favorite part about doing the research for The Accidental Empress?

Research…I just love research, as odd as that may sound. It is so fun for me. It is about diving headfirst into another time and place. It’s about bringing that world and the characters to life in your imagination and then figuring out how to recreate them with your words.

One of the most fun parts of the research process was traveling. It was in Vienna, years ago, that I first stumbled across the image of Sisi. She still looms large in Austria and Hungary as an almost deified figure. The Schönbrunn and Hofburg Palaces are fantastic resources in which to learn about not only Sisi, but all of the Habsburgs. You enter Sisi’s bedroom and you just can’t help but imagine her being in there—what must it have been like for her? Vienna still feels so grand and imperial today. You feel the power and majesty of the Habsburgs all over that city.

Budapest, Sisi’s other capital city, feels more whimsical and unruly. Walking around the Castle Hill and looking out over the Danube and the Chain Bridge, I could imagine why the romantic Sisi loved it there so much. That was her escape from Vienna and all of her official duties and obligations.

Both places were hugely important locales in her story, so I loved visiting both to learn about Sisi, Franz Joseph, and their world and their life together.

    Q. What was your favorite scene to write in The Accidental Empress? And why was it a favorite?

The scene of the Hungarian coronation in Budapest, which is interwoven throughout the novel and then caps off the novel as a grand finale. Readers will see that that moment was Sisi’s moment of triumph. It was at that time that Sisi reached the height of her power, her influence, and her physical strength and beauty. It’s also the moment in which many loose threads of the novel’s plot come together—for Sisi and for the other characters. Plus, it’s just plain fun to write about a party as lavish and grand as a coronation atop the city of Budapest.

The years leading up to this moment had been grueling and depleting and difficult—not only for Sisi, but for the whole Habsburg Court. This moment signifies that Sisi, as an empress and a woman, has a new plan—for herself and for the court and for the empire. Watch out, Sisi has entered the palace!

    Q. Could you give us a sneak peek at what life was like for Sisi? In other words, what can we expect in The Accidental Empress – drama, political intrigue, opulence, treachery, heartbreak, murder?

All of the above, actually, and then some! I would add that we take a good hard look at the concepts or themes of “love at first sight” and “happily ever after.” There is love and lust, fidelity and betrayal, appearance vs. reality, and a love triangle that leads to a surprise ending. Ultimately, it’s the story of one fascinating and enchanting young woman as she fights to come into her own, with all of her struggles playing out against a glittering and imperial backdrop and in a royal court where danger and temptation seem to lurk in every stateroom and bedroom.

A riveting historical novel about Peggy Shippen Arnold, the cunning wife of Benedict Arnold and mastermind behind America’s most infamous act of treason . . .

Everyone knows Benedict Arnold–the Revolutionary War general who betrayed America and fled to the British–as history’s most notorious turncoat. Many know Arnold’s co-conspirator, Major John Andre, who was apprehended with Arnold’s documents in his boots and hanged at the orders of General George Washington. But few know of the integral third character in the plot: a charming young woman who not only contributed to the betrayal but orchestrated it.

Socialite Peggy Shippen is half Benedict Arnold’s age when she seduces the war hero during his stint as military commander of Philadelphia. Blinded by his young bride’s beauty and wit, Arnold does not realize that she harbors a secret: loyalty to the British. Nor does he know that she hides a past romance with the handsome British spy John Andre. Peggy watches as her husband, crippled from battle wounds and in debt from years of service to the colonies, grows ever more disillusioned with his hero, Washington, and the American cause. Together with her former love and her disaffected husband, Peggy hatches the plot to deliver West Point to the British and, in exchange, win fame and fortune for herself and Arnold.

Told from the perspective of Peggy’s maid, whose faith in the new nation inspires her to intervene in her mistress’s affairs even when it could cost her everything, The Traitor’s Wife brings these infamous figures to life, illuminating the sordid details and the love triangle that nearly destroyed the American fight for freedom.”

BREAKING THE RULES Blog Tour: Echo Interviews Katie McGarry + Giveaway

BTR_BannerVI am so unbelievably excited to be a part of the BREAKING THE RULES Blog Tour hosted by Kismet Book Touring. I am a huge fan of this series by Author Katie McGarry and I cannot wait to read another story about Echo and Noah.

Of course I really, really, hope that the road trip doesn’t end in tears for either of them… or for me. But I can’t wait to find out on December 8th when it releases.

I am also super stoked to have an amazing post in which Katie McGarry is interviewed by Echo. It is actually quite an emotional interview, one which caused me to tear up and made my heart to go out to author. It’s also a total tease – I want to know what that scene is! Yes, Echo really knows how to give good interview.

This tour also includes a fab giveaway. So if you’d like the chance to win, scroll down to the Rafflecopter to enter.

And if you’d like to know more about the book and author or the other stops on this tour, the details are all below. But first, here’s…

    The Interview

Echo: Hi, Katie! You and I have had conversations together for a long time, but it’s weird to know that other people are going to be seeing how we talk.

Katie: Yeah, I know, but I wouldn’t have agreed to this if I didn’t think we’d make it safely to the other side.

Echo: True…anyhow…I always smile when people who know you really well mention that they hear the real you in some of me. Do people say that about all your characters or is this a special bond we share?

Katie: For the people who know me very well, they can typically find a small portion of me in all my characters. For instance, they really hear my sarcasm in Beth from Dare You To and how my brain will often search for logical answers in Haley from Take Me On.

But yes, even though you and I have a ton of differences, you are the closest to my “voice” than any of the characters I’ve written.

Echo: Why did you decide to place so much emphasis on therapy in Pushing the Limits and then decide to keep Mrs. Collins as a constant in my life in Breaking the Rules?

Katie: This is an emotional question for me.

There was a time that I would describe my life as being stuck in the middle of a snow globe and it was constantly being shaken into a blizzard. I was on the verge between being a teen and an adult and I couldn’t seem to find my footing on solid ground.

Due to some dramatic events that had taken place during this time period, I was forced into therapy and it was the best thing that ever happened to me, but at the time, I didn’t believe it.

I had one hour sessions and I either didn’t talk to the therapist or I would give whatever answer I believed the therapist wanted to hear so that he would believe that I was “fine” (whatever fine means).

My therapist saw right through me and finally, one day, after I had a run-in from someone in my past that had caused me to consider falling back into old lifestyles, I had a therapy session that changed everything.

I was doing what I normally did—evade, not answer, or give fake answers—and then my therapist said, “I’m only going to ask one more question and is it possible for you to answer this one question honestly?”

Caught off guard that the therapist knew I had been lying, my eyes snapped to his and I agreed.

The therapist asked, “If you could have anything in the world what would it be?”

It wasn’t what I expected the therapist to ask. I was expecting a million different questions that would probe into the world I was working so hard to hide and this extremely vague question rocked me. My eyes filled up with tears and I remember the anger rumbling through me because I couldn’t keep my mouth from trembling.

    “Tell me,” my therapist said.

And for the first time, I gave a completely honest answer. “If I could have anything I wish it would be six months from now.”

The therapist’s eyes widened and I could tell that wasn’t the answer he expected. “Why six months?”

“Because it won’t be now. Anything has to be better than right now.”

Because in six months there was no way the pain I was feeling in that moment would still be as horrible. There was no way my entire life would feel as hopeless as it did then.

For the first time in months, I allowed myself to cry. Tears rolled down my face and I sat and explained why my entire life was a mess and here’s the thing: the therapist listened. Never judged. Never made me feel bad—just listened.

And then, the therapist helped me figure out how I could change my life to make the six months from now be what I hoped it would be.

Therapy changed my life and I wanted to write characters whose lives were also changed by a great therapist.

Echo: So let’s go from serious to a little more fun. What was the most romantic scene for you to write for me and Noah in Breaking the Rules?

Katie: Oh, there are so many, but I have to say the rose scene is a personal favorite!

    Echo: Mine too!
