    Description…

A decadent spring break getaway on an exotic beach becomes a terrifying survival story when six Miami teens are kidnapped and ransomed.

Maddie is beyond done with her cousin Genesis’s entitled and shallow entourage. Genesis is so over Miami’s predictable social scene with its velvet ropes, petty power plays, and backstabbing boyfriends.

While Maddie craves family time for spring break, Genesis seeks novelty—like a last-minute getaway to an untouched beach in Colombia. And when Genesis wants something, it happens.

But paradise has its price. Dragged from their tents under the cover of dark, Genesis, Maddie, and their friends are kidnapped and held for ransom deep inside the jungle—with no diva left behind. It all feels so random to everyone except Genesis. She knows they were targeted for a reason. And that reason is her.

Now, as the hours count down, only one thing’s for certain: If the Miami hostages can’t set aside their personal problems, no one will make it out alive.

NOTE: This review is based on an ARC received from the author and an eARC received from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book. A Kindle eCopy has been pre-ordered for my collection.

    The Review

Action-packed and suspense-filled, 100 HOURS takes readers on a harrowing and nerve-wracking journey through the jungles of South America from not one but two characters’ perspectives. With a pace that is lightning fast, tension that continues to build, and with a few surprise twists, this is a story you will not be able to put down.

What starts off as a simple spring break vacation turns into a terrifying nightmare for Genesis, her cousins, and her friends. Used to being in control of every situation, she did not expect her decision to go to Colombia and hike to their beautiful remote beaches would be anything more than a mild inconvenience for her privileged friends and a step out of her comfort zone for her cousin Maddie.

She couldn’t have anticipated the situation they found themselves in – on the run, fleeing from a gun-toting kidnapper, facing even graver threats. She didn’t think her life held as many secrets as it did. She never imagined that things could go from idyllic to deadly in just 100 hours.

With a quick peek at the present, alternating points of view, and 100 hours to find out just what happened, Rachel Vincent created a gripping, electrifying, twisty-turny thriller. She introduced two female main characters to tell the tale – one who is strong, arrogant, entitled, manipulative and one who is cautious and caring, and who gains strength as the story progresses.

Not everything is as it seems – so expect a few surprises. This is not simply a young, wealthy tourists kidnapped for ransom horror story. There are hidden truths, power struggles, conflicting agendas, and betrayals of trust at play. And because this is just the first book in a series, not everything will be revealed or wrapped up at the story’s end.

100 HOURS promises to be a quick and enthralling read that will keep you on edge from the very first chapter where it teases what is to come. It delivers all the chills and anticipatory tension that can be hoped for. It drops hints at things that might be amiss. It reveals information from one character’s perspective that the other isn’t aware of. And it switches viewpoints, leaving you hanging for a chapter until the viewpoint switches back.

Readers who love their stories exciting, intense, and climactic from start to finish, that have a bit of a mystery, a touch of romance, a pulse-pounding pace, and characters they can connect with, will not want to miss this first installment in a sure to be outstanding series.

    A Note from Rachel Vincent

In my upcoming YA suspense 100 HOURS, Genesis and her cousin Maddie come from opposite ends of the privilege spectrum, but when they wind up kidnapped for ransom during spring break in Colombia and have no one else to count on, they discover they have more in common than either of them thought.

If you’ve read any of my previous releases, 100 HOURS probably seems like a departure for a Rachel Vincent book. And that’s what I thought, back when it was just me and an idea. But as I wrote the story and got to know the characters, I realized that even though this book is set in the Colombian jungle and these characters have no supernatural abilities, 100 HOURS is very much a book about the themes that draw me in over and over. Survival. Family friction and loyalty. High-stakes pulse-racing action. Twists, turns, secrets, and revelations. Girls who can fend for themselves and for anyone else who needs help.

    bookwatch

While the week of March 18th may not be a crazy week for new releases, I instantly knew I wanted to spotlight ELUSION for my book watch post. Ever since I first heard about it during an Epic Reads Tea Time event last year I’ve been dying to read it. It hits the trifecta – the cover is amazing, the tagline is intriguing and the description is awesome.

And while I haven’t yet had the chance to read it to discover just how awesome it is, I may have nudged a book off my reading pile this week to squeeze it in. Because I just can’t wait to discover this world, to meet Regan, to learn about Elusion® technology.

I’m curious as to just how near the future is in which this story takes place. I want to know what it’s like to Escape. And while I can easily imagine how addictive it might be, I am super excited to find out just why Elusion® technology is supposedly dangerous.

The description promises “suspense, thrills, and romance” and I can’t wait to find out what’s the truth behind the illusions. I can’t wait to see what effect Regan’s decision will have. And I really can’t wait to meet Josh.

But I am most curious to see how this collaborative effort comes together – whether the writing styles will blend, whether alternating points of view are used in order to showcase each author’s voice. And as I happen to have my copy sitting right next to me, I think I’ll get a few of these answers very soon.

Even if I didn’t have a copy on hand to dive into immediately, I would still be choosing ELUSION as the book to watch. Because it’s the book I’ve been waiting for the longest with the story that I’m most captivated by. And I’m absolutely thrilled it will be releasing in less than two weeks so that everyone will get the chance to read this amazing-sounding book.

    What about you?

Is ELUSION a book you’ve been waiting forever to read? Is it your most anticipated release for the week of March 18th?

Are you just as curious about the Elusion® technology as I am? Have you been wondering just what might be so dangerous about it? Are you excited to meet Regan and Josh?

And was it the book’s cover the first drew you to it? Was it the book’s title? Or was it the promise of what this story could be that made ELUSION a “must add” to your TBR shelf?

    About the Book

    Goodreads description:

Soon, Elusion® will change the world and life as we know it.

A new technology called Elusion is sweeping the country. An app, visor and wristband will virtually transport you to an exotic destination where adventure can be pursued without the complications—or consequences—of real life.

Regan is an Elusion insider. Or at least she used to be. Her father invented the program, and her best friend, Patrick, heir to the tech giant Orexis, is about to release it nationwide. But ever since her father’s unexpected death, Regan can’t bear to Escape, especially since waking up from the dream means crashing back to her grim reality.

Still, when there are rumors of trouble in Elusion—accusations that it’s addictive and dangerous—Regan is determined to defend it. But the critics of Elusion come from surprising sources, including Josh, the handsome skeptic with his own personal stakes. As Regan investigates the claims, she discovers a disturbing web of secrets. She will soon have to choose between love and loyalty…a decision that will affect the lives of millions.

Suspense, thrills, and romance fuel this near-future story about the seductive nature of a perfect virtual world, and how far one girl will go to uncover the truth behind the illusions.

ECHO IN TIME Blog Tour: “Dystopian Fashion” Guest Post + Giveaway

    echo in time blog tour

I am thrilled to be a stop on C.J. Hill’s ECHO IN TIME Blog Tour hosted by Fire and Ice. I read and loved the first book in the series, ERASING TIME, last year for the tour for that book, and I am super excited to continue the series with this sequel.

I am also super excited to be able to share this guest post by the author in which she shares her thoughts on fashion in dystopian societies. I love the idea that fashion trends will get more outrageous versus become more austere in the future. Without something catastrophic intervening, I can totally imagine that things will get bigger, bolder, brighter and possibly become utterly ridiculous.

Though, judging by the photos of celebrities that were included with this post, we’re not so far off from that right now. Yikes.

But whether the future ends up being ravaged by an apocalypse, society becomes oppressed under militaristic rule or the citizens of the future go a little color crazy with their fashion sensibilities, I think it’s fantastic that C.J. Hill, a.k.a. Janette Rallison, chose a colorful, quirky and bizarrely clad future for her dystopian society.

Anyway… enough about my thoughts. The author’s thoughts are much more interesting and include photos. Just check out the guest post immediately below.

And if you’d like to learn a little bit more about this series, the descriptions and places to find both books online follow below the post. There is also some info on the author and places to find her online.

Just below that is a giveaway for a hardcover copy of the first book in the series, ERASING TIME. So if you haven’t yet had a chance to check out this series, be sure to follow the instructions in the Rafflecopter to enter for a chance to win a copy.

And finally, if you’d like to check out the other stops on tour, I’ve included the schedule with direct links to previous stops. There are already some fab reviews if you’d like to see what other bloggers have to say about ECHO IN TIME.

So… after this very long intro, let me turn the blog over to C.J. Hill.

    The Guest Post

    Dystopian Fashion by C.J. Hill

Authors of science fiction novels often take aspects that exist in our society and exaggerate them in their futuristic novels. We already have a society where Big Brother not only watches us. He records our phone calls, tracks our shopping habits, and predicts what we want to buy next. (Which is why you shouldn’t ever look at creepy toys online for a blog about bad Christmas gifts. You’ll get zombie gnomes and animal butt magnets popping up on your sidebar forever.)

Dystopian novels portray a future where the government is so invasive they control things like: who people marry, what professions they’re allowed to have, and when citizens die. Dystopian novels are cautionary tales. In Echo in Time, information in society is limited. People aren’t allowed to leave their cities. Religion is banned. Children are raised in government run facilities. All very dystopian—and why you shouldn’t really want to live for hundreds of years. Apparently the future isn’t so bright.

That said, there are a few aspects of Echo in Time that are quite different than other dystopian books. Frequently in futuristic novels the characters are forced to wear plain uniforms. I don’t see this happening any time soon. Our society tries to emulate celebrities, and a large segment of them dress like expensive clowns. Seriously, I keep thinking that their outfits can’t get more outrageous—but they always do.

Take these celebrity getups. Famous people not only wore these outfits to events where they knew their pictures would be taken, we can assume they actually paid large amounts of money for them. This isn’t the type of clothing you can buy off the rack at The Gap.

Here’s Cher doing a fine impersonation of a trampy bride of Frankenstein.

    Echo in Time BT 1

Whoopi Goldberg appears to be one hat short of Mad Hatter status. (Eat your heart out, Johnny Depp.)

    Echo in Time BT 2

Lady Gaga shows us than one can never have enough shoulder pads–especially in a swimsuit.

    Echo in Time BT 3

In one of her more tasteful outfits, Nicki Minaj appears to be wearing a scribble.

    Echo in Time BT 4

Ah, tasteful didn’t last long. I would call this outfit sister-act-priestess-of-the-devil but I’m pretty sure Satan has more fashion sense.

    Echo in Time BT 5

To prove that men can be just as tasteless, here’s Elton John wearing an ostrich.

    Echo in Time BT 6

And fashion designer Marc Jacobs wore a black lace dress, white boxers, and pilgrim shoes to the Met gala–because crazy is always in style.

    Echo in Time BT 7

Really, when fashion designers are wearing black lace, white boxers, and pilgrim shoes, how long will it be before the rest of us are dressed like this?

    Echo in Time BT 8

Be afraid of the future. Be very afraid.

    About C.J. Hill

    Cj-hill
CJ Hill is a pen name for a YA author who is best known for writing romantic comedies. (Slayers will be her 18th published book.) Her writing has shifted away from the romantic comedy genre, so her editor thought a pen name would be a good idea. (New books will include: dangerous dragons, time travel to dystopian worlds, and flesh-eating beetles.) Since the publisher refused to let her have the pseudonym: The Artist Formerly Referred to as Princess, she chose a name to honor her mother. CJ Hill was her mother’s pen name, or at least it would have been if her mother had published. Her mother wrote a few children’s books and a middle grade novel but was taken by cancer before she had fully learned the craft.

Most writers’ first novels aren’t publishable. CJ Junior’s first novel wasn’t, but somehow was published anyway. Now, even though it is out of print, it remains forever available on Amazon, where it taunts her with its badness. This was another good reason to use a pen name.

CJ Hill has five children, three of whom like her on any given day depending on who is in trouble. She has lived in Arizona for the last half of her life, but is still in desert denial and hopes that one day her garden will grow silver bells and cockle shells or maybe just tomatoes.

The week of December 17th is a super quiet week for releases but ECHO IN TIME is a book that I’m totally excited for. I loved the first book in this series, ERASING TIME, and I can’t wait to continue Taylor and Sheridan’s story in this sequel.

The description promises a mission to destroy the time machine that was responsible for them being transported into the future. But it also mentions that the actions taken may have serious consequences. And I’m so curious as to what those might be.

As little else is revealed about what happens in this next book in the series, I’m dying to find out for myself. I had so many questions after reading ERASING TIME and I hope that some, if not all, of those questions will be answered in this book.

I really want to know how Echo factors into this sequel, if he’s the reason the book is titled as it is. I’m also curious to find out if this story will be told from Taylor’s POV and whether Sheridan’s POV will be included or if the story will reveal things from Joseph’s perspective.

As I have no idea what to expect and I was so surprised by how different the first book was from what I anticipated it to be, I won’t even bother guessing and will just wait patiently – or as patiently as I can – for its release in just three weeks.

While I am also very interested in reading the other book releasing the week of December 17th, I’ve had ECHO IN TIME on my radar since the very moment I devoured ERASING TIME, it’s a book I’ve been anxiously anticipating for the past few months, and is the book that I think totally deserves to be in the spotlight.

Published by Katherine Tegen Books, the print edition is 544 pages.

ALLEGIANT is the third and final full-length book in Author Veronica Roth’s Divergent trilogy.

    Dots_Divider

There aren’t very many YA books releasing the week of October 22nd, but even if there were I would still have chosen ALLEGIANT by Veronica Roth as the book to watch this week. And even though there’s a ton of hype surrounding this series, especially with the upcoming film release, I am still dying to find out how this series ends.

I had no clue ALLEGIANT‘s release date was just around the corner. I feel like I’ve been waiting forever to see what happens in this last installment in the series. So I’m more excited than ever that in just a couple weeks and a little bit of change I’ll be able to find out.

I’d been holding off reading the book’s description until now, so the wait wouldn’t be too torturous. But now that I have… Oh. My. Gosh! I am dying, just dying, to experience this story from the dual perspectives of Tris and… Tobias? I’m dying to know whose heart has changed. I’m dying to find out what secrets will be revealed. And I’m anxious to see if the ending will be happy, bittersweet or tragic.

I was not the biggest fan of dystopia when I started reading this series. But everyone told me that DIVERGENT was a definite must read. I’d never enjoyed The Handmaid’s Tale so the similarities initially put me off. However all of that wariness I felt quickly disappeared once I got further and further into this story, became more connected with the characters and got to experience the expansiveness of the author’s world.

I made a connection with the writing and was intrigued by the story, but it wasn’t until I read INSURGENT that I fell madly in love with this series, its characters, its world. It was so completely epic. And the moment I finished I was desperate to get my hands on the next installment. To find out how the author would wrap up this series. To find out whether all the characters I’d grown to love would make it to the end. To find out whether I’d be left a complete and total wreck.

I can’t wait for ALLEGIANT‘s release so that I can get answers to those three questions in the description. I can’t wait to find out what “impossible choices” Tris will have to make. And I am anxious to find out just how different Tris’ new reality is from the one she left behind.

The description mentions this book is over five hundred pages, but if it’s anything like the previous books in the series it will be a super fast read. So I’m glad it is as long as it is so that this story won’t feel rushed and saying goodbye won’t come quite so quickly.

So while I am excited to read the first book in Lauren Kate’s new series and I’m totally intrigued by Mary Gray’s THE DOLLHOUSE ASYLUM, there was no other option for me but ALLEGIANT as the book to spotlight for the week of October 22nd. It’s the book I’ve been anxiously awaiting since the moment I finished INSURGENT, it’s the very first YA dystopian series I fell in love with, and with two characters whose outcomes I’m very much invested in, ALLEGIANT is the book to watch this week.

    One choice will define you.

What if your whole world was a lie?
    What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything?

    Description…

Heart-stopping and electric, MILA 2.0: Origins: The Fire contains a short prequel story and an excerpt to MILA 2.0, the first book in a riveting Bourne Identity–style trilogy by Debra Driza.

Mila can’t remember anything before the fire that took her father’s life. It’s normal to have some memory loss after traumatic events, but Mila doesn’t remember if she’s ever learned to ride a bike, or if she’s ever been in love. Nothing.

What she doesn’t know is that she isn’t supposed to remember—that she was built in a computer science lab and programmed to forget. Because if she remembers, she might discover her true identity.

The question is: If she relived the fire, what would she see?

ORIGINS: THE FIRE offers readers a short introduction to the world of MILA 2.0 along with several chapters from the full-length novel. It is a teaser-length story that gives just a taste of the author’s writing and only hints at who Mila is. The context for this story itself is revealed in MILA 2.0.

It’s an engaging read that tells the tale of the fire that was an integral part of Mila’s memories. And it ends in a way that may be a bit of a surprise to those who haven’t yet “met” Mila or read the description for the novel.

Readers should not expect a novella-length story. It is simply a brief intro. But for those who have yet to purchase the full-length novel, it gives a nice long look at seven chapters from the book.

Set before the events in MILA 2.0, ORIGINS: THE FIRE can be enjoyed by both those who have read the book and those who have yet to read it.

    On a personal note…

I really liked this short story. I found myself totally caught up in what was happening, so I was more than a little bit surprised when it ended so suddenly. Of course I wanted more!

I’d been alerted to the fact that it was so short before I started reading it, so I wasn’t as surprised as I would have been had I not known that most of the eBook was taken up with several chapters from MILA 2.0.

It was interesting reading it after having read MILA 2.0, knowing exactly what was going on. But I can imagine, if I read this story first, I would have wondered what the heck happened right there at the end.

I am glad that this was written and that I read it. It makes me even more sympathetic toward Mila and makes me wonder a little bit more about Mila’s mom. Though I won’t say why, as my questions about her are rather spoiler-y.

As this was such a short read, I won’t make my review any longer than it already is, but I will just say that the eBook offers readers a great short story and a nice long look at the full-length novel.
