    Books I Can’t Wait For

    Today’s topic is…

Books I’m Looking Forward to in 2016

I am looking forward to so many books in the coming year – so many continuing series and so many new releases. And so, as to be fair to all those new releases (as I tend to favor continuing series because I’m already invested), I’m doing two top 10 lists – one for continuing series and one for new standalones and series books.

And of course I couldn’t resist including a few honorable mentions for some of the many continuing series I am desperately eager to read in 2016.

    Top Ten Continuing Series Books

ONE SPARK WILL RISE. Nina Kane was born to be an exorcist. And since uncovering the horrifying truth—that the war against demons is far from over—seventeen-year-old Nina and her pregnant younger sister, Mellie, have been on the run, incinerating the remains of the demon horde as they go.

In the badlands, Nina, Mellie, and Finn, the fugitive and rogue exorcist who saved her life, find allies in a group of freedom fighters. They also face a new threat: Pandemonia, a city full of demons. But this fresh new hell is the least of Nina’s worries. The well of souls ran dry more than a century ago, drained by the demons secretly living among humans, and without a donor soul, Mellie’s child will die within hours of its birth.

Nina isn’t about to let that happen . . . even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

What’s more, only the king, prince, tutor, and tutor-in-training are allowed to learn the very highest order language, the language of the gods. So when the tutor-in-training is executed for teaching slaves this sacred language, and Raisa is selected to replace her, Raisa knows any slipup on her part could mean death.

Keeping her secret is hard enough, but the romance that’s been growing between her and Prince Mati isn’t helping matters. Then Raisa is approached by the Resistance—an underground army of slave rebels—to help liberate Arnath slaves. She wants to free her people, but that would mean aiding a war against Mati. As Raisa struggles with what to do, she discovers a secret that the Qilarites have been hiding for centuries—one that, if uncovered, could bring the kingdom to its knees.

The Way I Used to BeTHE WAY I USED TO BE by Amber Smith

    Release date: March 22, 2016

    Find it: Goodreads

    Description…

In the tradition of Speak, this extraordinary debut novel shares the unforgettable story of a young woman as she struggles to find strength in the aftermath of an assault.

Eden was always good at being good. Starting high school didn’t change who she was. But the night her brother’s best friend rapes her, Eden’s world capsizes.

What was once simple, is now complex. What Eden once loved—who she once loved—she now hates. What she thought she knew to be true, is now lies. Nothing makes sense anymore, and she knows she’s supposed to tell someone what happened but she can’t. So she buries it instead. And she buries the way she used to be.

Told in four parts—freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year—this provocative debut reveals the deep cuts of trauma. But it also demonstrates one young woman’s strength as she navigates the disappointment and unbearable pains of adolescence, of first love and first heartbreak, of friendships broken and rebuilt, and while learning to embrace a power of survival she never knew she had hidden within her heart.

    Best Book Boyfriends of 2015

I’ve had such an eclectic reading year that I don’t have nearly as many book boyfriends as I’ve had in the past. Many of the books I’ve read and loved didn’t even have romance as part of the storyline. And I also know that due to the number of books I have read and loved this year I am forgetting a few of them – so sorry my lovely fic boys! But I did not prep this post well in advance, as I’d hoped to, and so I am certain I’m forgetting some of my favorites.

    Description…

Worlds divide, magic slays, and love lies in the second book of Josephine Angelini’s The Worldwalker Trilogy.

“You think I’m a monster, but my choices, as ruthless as they seem, are justified.”

Lily is back in her own universe, and she’s ready to start a new life with Rowan by her side. True, she almost died in the Pyre that fueled their escape from New Salem, and must hide her magic for the safety of everyone she cares about, but compared to fighting the Woven, the monstrous creatures inhabiting the alternate Salem, life is looking pretty good.

Unfortunately, Lillian, ruthless ruler of the 13 Cities, is not willing to let Lily go that easily. If she can’t persuade Lily to return to her world, she will force her to come back by doing away with the ones she loves.

Picking up right where Trial By Fire left off, Firewalker is another sexy, fast-paced, heartbreaking thrill ride from internationally bestselling author Josephine Angelini!

NOTE: This review is based on an ARC received from the publisher in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    The Review

Thrilling and action-packed and heartbreaking and suspenseful, FIRE WALKER is the electrifying and unputdownable second installment in Josephine Angelini’s Worldwalker Trilogy. It crosses worlds. It reveals secrets. It delivers surprises. It foreshadows things to come. It promises heartache, betrayal, devastation and loss. There are new allies, old enemies, deadlier threats and a shocking turn of events that will keep readers glued to the page and leave them anxious for the next installment.

Now that Lily has found her way back home, she hopes to be able to return to the life she had before learning of New Salem and Lillian and Crucibles. Before she knew what it meant to world walk. Before she became responsible for so many lives. But returning home, near death, after her lengthy unexplained absence with a weak cover story for where she’s been won’t be easy.

Not with a Special Agent looking for ways to trip her up. Not with her friends demanding answers she can’t give. Not with Lillian invading her thoughts, looking for ways to lure her back. And not with the Lady of Salem threatening everyone she loves.

The story picks up right where things left off and doesn’t skip a beat. It keeps readers on edge with the precariousness of Lily’s health, the danger of her secrets being revealed, the threats to her safety because of Lillian’s ruthless pursuit. It keeps the pages turning as more of Lillian’s backstory is uncovered, as things begin to fall apart in Lily’s world, as a new adventure begins.

Josephine Angelini does a fantastic job of advancing her story, of teasing readers with information about Lillian’s end game, of connecting both worlds, of keeping things interesting with a few unexpected twists, new travel companions, impossible choices, of building up to an ending that will leave readers dangling from a cliff.

The author puts her characters – especially Lily – through the wringer. She gives them improbable odds of success. She does not promise them safety. And she is not afraid of saying goodbye to them.

FIREWALKER is instantly captivating, totally consuming, positively nail-biting, wildly entertaining. It has savage creatures, vicious pursuers, clever and deadly adversaries, courageous allies, awesome abilities, a touch of romance, a whole heap of heartbreak, a lethal battle, an epic journey, a jaw-dropping surprise.

It is an absolute must read for fans of the series and for readers who want to be fascinated and enthralled, fall in love with multiple worlds, and embark upon one heck of an amazing adventure.

    REVIEW

TRIAL BY FIRE is a riveting, action-packed first book in a series that looks to be every bit as amazing. Set in an alternate world to our own, one with only a few similarities, a world of magic, where witches are in control, and where life outside the Thirteen Cities is extremely dangerous, this story will captivate from the moment Lily Proctor arrives in this Salem of covens, Outlanders, shamans and the Woven.

When Lily Proctor wished she could be anywhere but in her life, she never imagined it was a possibility. Plagued by afflictions her doctors could never diagnose that left her unable to do almost anything fun, stuck in a town that judged her based on her crazy mother, and virtually abandoned by her father so that she and her sister Juliet were left to pick up the pieces, Lily already wanted things to be different.

But when her best friend, Tristan, the boy she hoped was finally going to be more than just a friend, betrayed and humiliated her, it was the last straw. She wanted out of her life. She just didn’t think it could happen. Or that there was an alternate version of her world, one where she wasn’t sick but instead powerful and feared, that she would be summoned to.

A world where she would have to fight for her survival, fight for her beliefs, fight to save those she has come to care about, and fight to find a way to get back home.

Josephine Angelini created a story that is fast-paced, exciting and imaginative. She created characters that readers will immediately adore or detest. She created a world that blends the past, the present and the fictional in a way that will make readers anxious to explore it. She filled it with deadly battles, daring rescues, harrowing escapes, nightmarish creatures, intriguing magic, a hint of romance, a touch of heat, and an ending that will make waiting for the sequel torturous.

Thrilling and absolutely spellbinding, TRIAL BY FIRE is a must for readers who love stories that are epic, who prefer to be transported to different and fantastical worlds, who are fascinated by magical abilities, who want characters they can root for, and who love the promise of something awesome in future books in a series.

    My Reading Pile #167

    MRP-new

This week was a quiet week at the mailbox. I didn’t receive any print books or ARCs in the mail. Though I did grab one eARC on NetGalley so it wasn’t a completely quiet week.

[Credit for mailbox sharing goes to The Story Siren]

After last week’s surprise deliveries I am so glad for the lack of books this week. Though I’ve been told a book I can’t wait to read is on its way to me, for a short term loan.

And while it’s still early on Friday, I doubt I’ll be getting any deliveries. But I did grab a book from NetGalley that I was so sad to be missing out on when it was available for the first hundred readers a few weeks back.

Trial by FireTRIAL BY FIRE (The Worldwalker Trilogy #1) by Josephine Angelini

I nearly sobbed when the link I clicked in the NetGalley email said the first hundred readers had already grabbed a copy of TRIAL BY FIRE. But when I was stalking the site mid-week I was over-the-moon happy to see it available to request.

I love Josephine Angelini’s writing and I have been desperately wanting to re-read her Starcrossed trilogy. But for right now I’m totally stoked that I have this new book, with its awesome cover and intriguing description, to read.

And there’s no way I’m going to wait until the end of summer to read it. This one’s going on the pile this week.

Right after I finish a book I may have snuck onto the pile just a little bit early.

Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.

    {May 25, 2014 – May 31, 2014}

    Snow Like Ashes
    Add_to_GR

First up on the pile is SNOW LIKE ASHES by Sara Raasch. I grabbed an eARC from Balzer + Bray via Edelweiss awhile back and I’ve been dying to get it on the pile ever since. And while it doesn’t release until mid-October, and I should really wait just a little while, I just can’t.

In fact, I started reading it late Thursday night and may be finished with it before this post publishes on Saturday. It’s just that awesome. I’ve only read about 15 percent so far, but it didn’t even take one percent for me to become hooked. I think it only took a sentence or two.

I keep forgetting how much I love high fantasy until I start reading. And it didn’t take me long to fall in love with this book. I already love the world and can’t wait to see what happens with Meira and Mather. A little bird – a certain “chick” actually – might have mentioned there would be someone else I’ll adore and I can’t wait to meet him too.

But as I’m already so invested in this story, there’s no way I won’t be finishing it this weekend. And if I’m smart I won’t wait to write my review, even if I won’t post it for awhile.

    The Description…

A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

    Trial by Fire

    Add_to_GR

Next up on the pile is TRIAL BY FIRE by Josephine Angelini. As I’d mentioned above, I received an eARC courtesy of Feiwel & Friends via NetGalley and I can’t wait to start reading it.

If I hadn’t already been anxiously awaiting this book because I love the author’s writing and I love the book’s cover and title, the first three sentences of the description would have totally won me over.

I can’t wait to meet Lily Proctor and discover this alternate universe which the description describes as “terrifyingly sensual.” I can’t wait to find out why her weakness in her own world is a strength in this new one. I can’t wait to learn more about New Salem and the women called Crucibles.

I’m just super excited that I won’t have to wait much longer to find out.

    The Description…

Love burns. Worlds collide. Magic reigns.

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying many of the experiences that other teenagers take for granted…which is why she is determined to enjoy her first (and perhaps only) high-school party. But Lily’s life never goes according to plan, and after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class Lily wishes she could just disappear.

Suddenly Lily is in a different Salem – one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruellest of all the Crucibles is Lillian . . . Lily’s identical other self in this alternate universe. This new version of her world is terrifyingly sensual, and Lily is soon overwhelmed by new experiences.

Lily realizes that what makes her weak at home is exactly what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. It also puts her life in danger. Thrown into a world she doesn’t understand, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can’t hope to shoulder alone, and a love she never expected.

But how can Lily be the saviour of this world when she is literally her own worst enemy?

    Wishful Thinking Reads

I am not choosing a wishful thinking read this week. Because I plan on reading last week’s wishful thinking read – CITY OF HEAVENLY FIRE by Cassandra Clare – when it releases on Tuesday. I didn’t add it to the pile as I know how I am about series-ending books. But there’s no way I’m going to wait to read it, as spoilers always seem to abound when it comes to this series.

    Those Left Behind

I read THE STEPSISTER’S TALE but I just couldn’t say goodbye to Finley et al in THE GIRL WITH THE WINDUP HEART. Maybe this week… or next week. And I went completely off-pile to read NOW AND FOREVER by Susane Colasanti, which I absolutely adored. It was a super quick read, and somewhat bittersweet, but I kind of knew that going in.

And while I haven’t yet written reviews for either book, I actually managed to write and post two other reviews for ALL LINED UP and DON’T CALL ME BABY. Now, if I can only write those reviews for TEMPTING THE BODYGUARD and THE LOVELY AND THE LOST.

I still need to finish THE ART OF FLOATING, but I couldn’t resist going off-pile to start reading SNOW LIKE ASHES. As it is a holiday weekend, I’m hoping to get a bit more time to read and get all caught up. But I think I’ll plan on keeping the long weekend review writing free.

I’ll have plenty of time to write those reviews, and my review for TAKE ME ON, later in the week… I hope.

    NetGalley Pile Adds & Finds

I checked out NetGalley a couple of times this week. I was hoping to find a book on there that I’d love to read pre-release. I haven’t seen it yet, but I did find TRIAL BY FIRE which made me so unbelievably happy. And I saw another book that I’d love to request, THE BODIES WE WEAR, but probably won’t get approved for, so I’m debating. In the meantime….

    Here are this week’s finds…

TRIAL BY FIRE by Josephine Angelini (Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, Sep 2 2014)

UNMADE (The Lyburn Legacy #3) by Sarah Rees Brennan (Random House Children’s, Sep 23 2014)

BREATHE, ANNIE, BREATHE by Miranda Kenneally (Sourcebooks Fire, Jul 15 2014)

ON A CLEAR DAY by Walter Dean Myers (Random House Children’s, Sep 23 2014)

THE CAMELOT CODE by Mari Mancusi (NLA Digital LLC, Apr 9 2014)

WINTERKILL by Kate A. Boorman (Abrams, Sep 9 2014) **US/Canada reviewers preferred**

THE CALLER by Juliet Marillier (Random House Children’s, Sep 9 2014)

PAPER AIRPLANES by Dawn O’Porter (Abrams, Sep 9 2014)

THE WALK ON (The Triple Threat #1) by John Feinstein (Random House Children’s, Sep 9 2014)

SUMMER’S SHADOW by Anna Wilson (Pan Macmillan, Jul 3 2014) **UK reviewers preferred**

GLIMPSE by Kendra Leighton (Little, Brown Book Group UK, Jun 19 2014) **UK reviewers preferred**

PERFECTED by Kate Jarvik Birch (Entangled Publishing LLC, Jul 1 2014)

I didn’t feel at all productive this week and yet I did manage to read a couple of books and write a couple of reviews and go back to work for a couple of days before this holiday weekend here in the U.S. So I wasn’t unproductive. I just felt that way.

My reading interests keep varying so I never know whether what piques my curiosity one day will continue to hold my interest the next. So I keep trying to finish books in one day, if not in one sitting. Sadly it’s not always possible, so I have a number of books that are still reads-in-progress.

While I’m sad that my mini vacay is over, I’m kind of glad to be getting back to work. Too much free time is a dangerous thing. Especially as I don’t have the kind of money I’d need to really enjoy the time off.

    Anyway…

I really hope to be able to read this week’s books on the pile, write a couple reviews, and finish one or two of those in progress reads. But I’m not going to get too ambitious as I have a day of sailing on Saturday and I am so excited about the new X-Men film that I will be going to see no matter what this weekend.

Still… there is an extra day. So I hope to get a little something extra accomplished. We shall definitely see.

But before I sign off, I want to wish you a very happy reading week ahead and I hope that you’ll have received all the books you dreamed of getting and that your TBR pile is not too scary to tackle.

    As ever… Happy reading!

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #126

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of May 28st-June 3rd that I have pre-ordered.

    05

    Of Triton

    addtogoodreads

OF TRITON by Anna Banks will be released in the U.S. on May 28, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Feiwel & Friends, the print edition is 256 pages.

OF TRITON is the second full-length book in author Anna Banks’ Of Poseidon series. The third book in the series, OF NEPTUNE, is slated for release in 2014.

    Line_001

I’m super excited for the release of Anna Banks’ OF TRITON this week. While I haven’t yet read the first book in the series, OF POSEIDON, I will definitely be reading both books this June because I love being able to read books in a series back-to-back.

I pre-ordered OF TRITON just as soon as it was available for the Kindle and actually had traded for an early copy in the hope that I could read it before it released, but wasn’t able to. But there’s no way I will miss the chance to read both books and the prequel novella next month.

Because I want to meet Galen and Emma and can’t wait to discover this story and series told from both characters’ perspectives. At least I think this sequel also has dual POVs….

I did end up accidentally taking a peek at the description for OF TRITON while creating this post and couldn’t help but read it all. So now I’m more excited than ever to learn about Emma’s mother and see what happens when the kingdoms of Poseidon and Triton turn against each other.

If I get caught up with this week’s reads, I can (hopefully) get this series on the pile next week. My fingers are crossed. Tightly.

    div1

    Goddess

    addtogoodreads

GODDESS by Josephine Angelini will be released in the U.S. on May 28, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 432 pages.

GODDESS is the third and final book in author Josephine Angelini’s Starcrossed trilogy.

    Line_001

I’m both so happy and so so sad that GODDESS is releasing this week. I love this series and I’m devastated that it comes to an end in this book. I have the eBook pre-ordered but plan to buy the print copy as I have both previous books in the series in print. The first one is even signed.

I did read GODDESS just a little bit early and it was amazing, so it won’t be added to my TBR pile even though it is being added to my collection. Though I think the entire series needs a re-read so it will likely end up on the TBRR pile in the next few weeks.

But I have to own this final book because it is one of those books – and series – that I love, love, love. And it’s one I definitely will re-read again and again.

As I already talked about GODDESS in my Book Watch post and my review will go up on Monday or Tuesday, I won’t ramble on much more here. But yes the mythology had me riveted. Yes there is a resolution to the love triangle. Yes this story felt very epic. And yes I wish there were more stories in the series even though things did wrap themselves up… somewhat….

There is this tiny opening that I’m hoping means there will be more stories in this world. Which would be awesome. Even if the MCs aren’t Helen and Lucas and Orion. But I’ll say no more about that.

The one thing I will say is that reading GODDESS has made me desperately want to re-read STARCROSSED. So, hopefully, I’ll get the chance in a couple of week and can follow it up with re-reads of DREAMLESS and GODDESS, too.

The Girl with the Iron Touch

    addtogoodreads

THE GIRL WITH THE IRON TOUCH by Kady Cross will be released in the U.S. on May 28, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin TEEN, the print edition is 384 pages.

THE GIRL WITH THE IRON TOUCH is the third full-length book in author Kady Cross’ Steampunk Chronicles. There is no information yet available about the fourth book in the series.

    Line_001

I am so happy that THE GIRL WITH THE IRON TOUCH is not the final book in this series. I didn’t think it was until very recently, but then I read something on Goodreads which said it was. So I read the entire book – yes, I got an early eARC from NetGalley – thinking it was “the end.” Then was totally confused when I got to the end and everything was still so up in the air.

I thought maybe the series was canceled unexpectedly. That is not the case. At least I don’t think so, as Goodreads now says there are five books planned in the series. Which makes me even more thrilled that THE GIRL WITH THE IRON TOUCH is releasing this week and my finished eBook will be downloading to my Kindle on Monday Midnight.

Because this installment in the series was absolutely adorable. I loved the current adventure. I loved that there was more Emily and Sam in this one.

The start of this book just pulled me right in and I couldn’t wait to see how it ended. Even though I thought it was a series-ending book at the time.

And I am so glad there will be more, as I want more Jack Dandy. I want more Finley. And as I’m still wary about the new character, I am anxious to see what happens there.

As I’ve already read this third book in the series, it won’t be going on my TBR pile and I won’t ramble on any more. Especially since I will be posting my review in the next couple of days. A review in which I seem to ramble on endlessly.

But I am super stoked that THE GIRL WITH THE IRON TOUCH is releasing this week and that I’ll be able to add a finished copy of this book to my Kindle this week.

    Dare You To

    addtogoodreads

DARE YOU TO by Katie McGarry will be released in the U.S. on May 28, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin TEEN, the print edition is 480 pages.

DARE YOU TO is the second full-length book in author Katie McGarry’s Pushing the Limits series. The third book, CRASH INTO YOU, is slated for release on November 26, 2013.

    Line_001

I can’t believe release day is just about here for DARE YOU TO by Katie McGarry. I will be reading it on Monday and will hopefully be done around the time the finished eBook downloads to my Kindle.

I’ve heard that both books in this series are amazing and am just about ready to start reading PUSHING THE LIMITS, so I should be able to agree or disagree with that statement in a few hours. But I am just as excited to read this second book in the series about Ryan and Beth as I am to read that first book.

I love contemporary stories that are about real-to-life issues and ones that put the characters in difficult situations. So I’m curious to see how the author approaches each book and how she resolves things for her characters.

And DARE YOU TO sounds like an opposites attract story, which I love, so I am stoked that I won’t have to wait until Monday Midnight to start reading it.

I’m guessing it was a bit quieter of a week for releases due to the holiday in the U.S. Which is kind of nice as the next two weeks have quite a few books I’m looking forward to adding to my collection.

I’m even more thrilled that of the four books I’ve pre-ordered three of them are ones I’ve read – or will have read – by the time of their release. And as I definitely plan on reading OF POSEIDON and OF TRITON in the next couple of weeks, technically none of my pre-orders will be TBR books.

However… I am going to be buying SKY ON FIRE. I own the first book in the series and always planned on pre-ordering this second book. And I would have clicked to pre-order it for my Kindle while creating this post, but it seems there’s something hinky with my account. So it will have to wait until I have time to deal with it on Tuesday.

And I think there’s another book in THE VAMPIRE DIARIES series – The Salvation: Unseen – releasing this week, published by 47North (Amazon). On Goodreads it only shows a UK version so I’m not sure about its connection with the other books in the series penned by different authors. As I haven’t really been following this series since all those TV tie-in books were released, I’m a tad clueless.

    Anyway….

Hopefully some of the books releasing this week are ones you are looking forward to adding to your collection. Hopefully a few of them are ones you’ve already had the chance to read. And if there are any books I should have on my radar that I don’t, I’d love to hear about them!

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

Most of the reviews, however, are based upon books purchased after publication date.
