Title & Series: THE SHADOW QUEEN (Ravenspire #1)
    Author: C.J. Redwine
    Release date: February 16, 2016
    Publisher: Balzer + Bray

    Formats: Hardcover, eBook

A dark epic fantasy inspired by the tale of Snow White, from C. J. Redwine, the author of the Defiance series. Perfect for fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses and Cinder.

Lorelai Diederich, crown princess and fugitive at large, has one mission: kill the wicked queen who took both the Ravenspire throne and the life of her father. To do that, Lorelai needs to use the one weapon she and Queen Irina have in common—magic. She’ll have to be stronger, faster, and more powerful than Irina, the most dangerous sorceress Ravenspire has ever seen.

In the neighboring kingdom of Eldr, when Prince Kol’s father and older brother are killed by an invading army of magic-wielding ogres, the second-born prince is suddenly given the responsibility of saving his kingdom. To do that, Kol needs magic of his own—and the only way to get it is to make a deal with the queen of Ravenspire, promise to become her personal huntsman—and bring her Lorelai’s heart.

But Lorelai is nothing like Kol expected—beautiful, fierce, and unstoppable—and despite dark magic, Lorelai is drawn in by the passionate and troubled king. Fighting to stay one step ahead of the dragon huntsman—who she likes far more than she should—Lorelai does everything in her power to ruin the wicked queen. But Irina isn’t going down without a fight, and her final move may cost the princess the one thing she still has left to lose.

    The Guest Post

‘Five Fast Facts’ by C.J. Redwine

    1. She has mad parkour skills and is an accomplished thief. Need someone to pick a lock, steal something from the queen’s garrison, and then escape the guards by literally running up and over a wall? She’s your girl.
    2. She has a gyrfalcon whom she can communicate with telepathically. Sometimes this results in an attacker running for his life. Sometimes this results in mice guts being dropped on her brother’s head from on high.
    3. Her name means alluring enchantress. She wouldn’t think twice about whether or not she’s alluring, but she has serious magical power, and she’s going to use it to bring down the most powerful sorceress Ravenspire has ever seen.
    4. She is unfailingly practical, much to the despair of her brother (whose spirit animal is whichever animal can do jazz hands).
    5. It takes her a long time to lose her temper, but once she does, lookout world, you’re about to burn.

    1. It’s not like he’s kissed every girl at school. Just most of them. For science.
    2. He’s been expelled from Eiler’s Military Academy three times for (seriously legendary) pranks. He kind of regrets getting expelled, but he doesn’t regret the pranks.
    3. He’s spent his life in the shadow of his oh-so-perfect older brother—the only one who seems able to meet their father’s expectations. Kol doesn’t want his brother’s position as heir to the throne, but he sometimes admits to wanting his father’s approval.
    4. He’s incredibly loyal, and he has a large group of close friends who’d do anything for him.
    5. When you strip away the playboy and the pranks, you find a prince who will sacrifice himself to save his people.

    Queen Irina

    1. She grew up hearing her father constantly compare her to her younger sister. Irina always fell short.
    2. She spent years training with a secret group of mardushkas (sorceresses), learning how to use her power in ways that were strictly forbidden by the king.
    3. Following the rules left her with a broken heart and shattered dreams. Now, she makes the rules. And anyone who crosses her (or who has something she needs) pays a terrible price.
    4. She loved Lorelai at first.
    5. There is nothing she wouldn’t do, no life she wouldn’t take, to secure her throne and vanquish any threat to her power.

A world of darkness. A love that shines.

Seventeen years ago, an eclipse cloaked the kingdom of Relhok in perpetual darkness, and in the chaos, an evil chancellor murdered the king and queen and seized their throne. Luna, the kingdom’s lost princess, has been locked away in a tower in the cursed Black Woods ever since. Luna’s survival depends entirely on the world believing she is dead…

But that doesn’t stop Luna from longing for a life beyond the stifling tower walls. When she meets Fowler, a mysterious archer who has braved the Black Woods in search of a land where the sun still shines, Luna is drawn to him despite the risk.

When the tower is attacked, Luna and Fowler escape together. But this world of darkness is far more treacherous than Luna ever realized. Hideous, flesh-hungry creatures lurk behind every corner and each stranger they encounter has frightening ulterior motives.

With every threat stacked against them, Luna and Fowler find solace in each other. But with secrets still unspoken between them, falling in love might be their most dangerous journey yet.

Note: This review is based on an eARC received from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    The Review

Sophie Jordan’s REIGN OF SHADOWS is magical and unexpected and enchanting and breathtaking. Its first lines will transport you into an intriguing and terrifying world that has been plunged into darkness. It is a fairytale that begins with a princess trapped in a tower. It is an epic adventure filled with many obstacles and dangers and deadly foes. It is riveting and nerve-wracking and heartbreaking and amazing and absolutely unforgettable.

All Luna wanted was her freedom. Confined to the tower she’d lived in for most of her life, she wished for the chance to explore the world beyond its doors. Even the threat of danger wasn’t enough to dissuade her from wanting to leave behind the safety of the tower.

So when the opportunity to sneak out arose she took it. When her decision put her in a position to choose between her own safety and that of someone else, she chose to help. When her choices compromised the security of the tower and put her loved ones at risk she would have her freedom, even if she she didn’t truly want it.

Author Sophie Jordan introduces a main character who is heroic, kind-hearted, stubborn, and selfless. Luna is willing to do whatever it takes to protect those she loves, even if it means leaving them behind. And even if it means putting her trust in a boy she barely knows, who has made it abundantly clear he wants nothing to do with her.

Fowler is a reluctant hero. He’s brave, a skilled fighter, and has the potential to be exactly who Luna needs him to be. But his past has forced him to keep secrets, to harden his heart, and to keep her at arm’s length for as long as he possibly can. Although with a harrowing journey ahead for them both, working together, learning from each other, becoming friends, becoming more than friends may be unavoidable.

REIGN OF SHADOWS invites you into a world where its ruler is a tyrant and a madman, where its citizens live in fear of what lurks in the almost constant darkness, and where only the strongest and bravest have a hope of surviving. It is a world where things do more than go bump in the night, and nearly every moment is night. It is a world that has evolved and adapted to its strange new inhabitants and to a ruthless existence for all.

Readers looking for a story that is imaginative and exciting and completely and utterly captivating, with gorgeous writing, romance, thrills and chills, hold-your-breath suspense, and a killer cliffhanger ending, will fall madly in love with this phenomenal first book in the series.

Riley Cavanaugh is many things: Punk rock. Snarky. Rebellious. And gender fluid. Some days Riley identifies as a boy, and others as a girl. But Riley isn’t exactly out yet. And between starting a new school and having a congressman father running for reelection in über-conservative Orange County, the pressure—media and otherwise—is building up in Riley’s life.

On the advice of a therapist, Riley starts an anonymous blog to vent those pent-up feelings and tell the truth of what it’s really like to be a gender fluid teenager. But just as Riley’s starting to settle in at school—even developing feelings for a mysterious outcast—the blog goes viral, and an unnamed commenter discovers Riley’s real identity, threatening exposure. And Riley must make a choice: walk away from what the blog has created—a lifeline, new friends, a cause to believe in—or stand up, come out, and risk everything.

From debut author Jeff Garvin comes a powerful and uplifting portrait of a modern teen struggling with high school, relationships, and what it means to be a person.

Note: This review is based on an eARC received from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    The Review

SYMPTOMS OF BEING HUMAN is an immensely entertaining, important, informational and educational read. It introduces a character who is likable and funny and brave and not-so-brave, who makes mistakes, who pushes themselves, who learns and grows and becomes someone who is comfortable with who they are.

Riley is gender fluid, not identifying with just one gender. Riley doesn’t want to stand out. Riley doesn’t want to make waves, especially with a parent who is running for re-election. Riley doesn’t want to be labeled and yet finds themselves trying to attach a label to the people they meet.

Riley just wants to find a way to navigate through school and life that doesn’t make them feel uncomfortable in their own skin, that doesn’t make them feel like they’re living a lie, that doesn’t make them feel stressed or anxious or panicked. Switching schools was not the solution Riley hoped it would be. But starting a blog, sharing their thoughts, offering advice, connecting with their followers, might prove to be the catalyst for change that Riley needs.

Jeff Garvin did a phenomenal job of connecting readers with his character Riley, helping them understand, empathize, relate to what Riley is going through, educating and informing them about the different types of gender identities there are and what some of the challenges these individuals face are.

The author created a story that is as engaging as it is informative. It has a wonderful flow that isn’t interrupted by the education of the reader. The situations and experiences presented feel true to life for Riley. Riley isn’t cast in the role of victim, but rather is put in a position to take control of their life, to be honest about who they are, to find support amongst friends and family, and to be empowered by their experiences rather than defeated by them.

By not revealing Riley’s birth-assigned gender readers will be able to get to know Riley without a label. And by seeing the world through Riley’s eyes they’ll realize that Riley is not so different from everyone their age who is hoping for acceptance, to fit in, to be loved.

SYMPTOMS OF BEING HUMAN is the perfect read for those looking to learn more about gender dysphoria and seeking to gain a better understanding of the challenges and issues that teens with non-traditional gender identities typically deal with. It is extremely well-researched, exceptionally well-written, incredibly enlightening, and utterly compelling. And a definite must for those just looking for a really great read.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

Note: This review is based on an ARC received from the publisher in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    The Review

GLASS SWORD is an epic and thrilling and nail-biting and heartbreaking second installment in Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen series. It takes readers on an action-filled and riveting journey with Mare Barrow and the Scarlet Guard as they attempt to find and save others like Mare who could be instrumental in their fight against the Silvers. With dangerous missions, deadly battles and lethal enemies awaiting them, this promises to be an intense, electrifying and unputdownable read.

Still reeling from the betrayal that nearly cost her and her allies their lives, Mare must quickly pull herself together and come up with a plan to save the Reds with Silver abilities before the King finds and destroys them all. Without the Scarlet Guard on board it will be an impossible feat. But as she hasn’t yet earned their trust, getting their help is unlikely.

With time running out, even without their support, Mare will have to take action. Because she’s not willing to stand by while those like her are annihilated. She’s not willing to let her enemies continue to oppress the Reds. And she’s not willing to let her desire for revenge go unfulfilled.

Victoria Aveyard has done an incredible job in creating a sequel that advances the story yet gives it a very different feel from the first novel. She introduces new characters with different and fascinating abilities. She takes her characters to new settings. She gives them new challenges to face, new enemies to fight, and new hurdles to overcome. And she forces them to make difficult choices, ones that will alter them irrevocably.

Not everyone can be trusted. Not everyone will keep their word. Not everyone will remain unscathed. And with a devastated, vengeful, heartbroken and extremely powerful heroine leading the charge, not everyone will survive.

Gorgeous writing, beautiful imagery and a richly detailed world are just a fraction of what makes GLASS SWORD a must. The characters’ quest, their cause, their strengths, their weaknesses captivate. The plot twists, the surprises, the outcomes, the possibilities are edge-of-your-seat exciting. The character connections are magnetic, moving, heartrending. And the ending ensures an eagerly anticipated follow-up.

5 Reasons Why THE CROWN’S GAME is a Must

There are plenty of reasons why THE CROWN’S GAME is a book that should exist at the top of every TBR pile. But I’m choosing to list only five of those reasons so that a) this post doesn’t go on endlessly, and b) I don’t accidentally spoil anything since I’m well into reading this lovely book and it would be way too easy to reveal just what’s happened so far.

    The Five Reasons

    #5…The Setting

The story takes place in the past. In Russia. 1825 to be more specific. Which was a tumultuous time in Russia. And it made me just so desperately curious to visit the author’s Russia during this time period. But for those who might not have quite the fascination with history – or Russia’s history – as I do, think exotic and dangerous country, sexy accents, sexier names, a stunning palace.

Setting alone makes this book a must.

    #4…The Royals

Who doesn’t love a story about royalty? Especially one that promises romance, deadly battles, secrets and threats. The tsars and tsarinas of Russia have always had interesting and fascinating stories. And from the book’s description, I knew that the tsesarevich’s story would be equally as exciting, if not more so.

    #3…The Love Triangle

While not everyone loves a love triangle as much as I do, a well-done love triangle that has some potentially deadly consequences should be more than enough to pique one’s curiosity. A girl with some seriously kick-a** powers, a future ruler who will lose something even if he wins, and a boy whose love could cost him his life has the makings of one seriously ahhh-mazing love triangle.

    #2…The Magic

I am wildly intrigued by magic and magical abilities. I always gravitate toward stories where the characters have some kind of ability to wield magic. Vika and Nikolai’s powers sound so awesome , and maybe just a little bit deadly. So of course I want to discover to what extent their abilities go, learn how powerful they are, and see them in action. Don’t you want to?

    #1…The Game

So intrigued by the Crown’s Game – it’s the book’s title after all. Curious to see what the dual between the two enchanters entails. Desperate to learn the outcome of their battle or find out if they were able to avoid battling to the death. The game itself sounds like the very best part of this first book in the series. This competition between the two enchanters is bound to have complications and is sure to cause heartbreak and loss. How exciting is all that?!?

If you love faraway fictionalized historical settings, all the drama that attaches itself to royalty, complicated romances, crazy, kick-a** powers, and a forum for everything to play itself out – and how could you not love it all – then THE CROWN’S GAME is as much a must read for you as it is for me.

And with just under four months until its release, the wait won’t be too long.

Raisa was just a child when she was sold to work as a slave in the kingdom of Qilara. Despite her young age, her father was teaching her to read and write, grooming her to take his place as a Learned One. In Qilara, the Arnathim, like Raisa, are the lowest class, and literacy is a capital offense. What’s more, only the king, prince, tutor, and tutor-in-training are allowed to learn the very highest order language, the language of the gods. So when the tutor-in-training is executed for teaching slaves this sacred language, and Raisa is selected to replace her, Raisa knows any slipup on her part could mean death.

Keeping her secret is hard enough, but the romance that’s been growing between her and Prince Mati isn’t helping matters. Then Raisa is approached by the Resistance—an underground army of slave rebels—to help liberate Arnath slaves. She wants to free her people, but that would mean aiding a war against Mati. As Raisa struggles with what to do, she discovers a secret that the Qilarites have been hiding for centuries—one that, if uncovered, could bring the kingdom to its knees.

“I was completely enthralled by the fascinating and unique world that Kathy MacMillan has created.  The depth and skill she demonstrates with her ability to build an original mythology based on words and the power of language are highly unusual for a first-time novelist and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.” – National Book Award finalist Franny Billingsley

“A tense, romantic fantasy epic about prejudice, political struggle, and the power of words, SWORD AND VERSE kept me guessing at every turn. Kathy MacMillan is a writer to watch.” — R.J. Anderson, Andre Norton Award-nominated author of Ultraviolet

    The Review

SWORD AND VERSE is an epic and thrilling and riveting story. It introduces a world shaped by gods and goddesses, a world where the written word is reserved for only the most elite, a world where those seen as less are enslaved. It’s a story of the fight for justice and equality, of bravery and standing up for what’s right, of honesty and trust, and of love and sacrifice. It’s an exciting and nail-biting read that will have you rooting for the underdog, for a happy ending to the love story, for freedom for the oppressed, and for punishment for the oppressors.

Raisa had only one tangible object from her past – a scrap of paper from her father, written in a language she couldn’t decipher. Taken from her family during a raid and sold as a slave, she never thought she’d ever be taught the skill to read and write. Only Tutors were granted the privilege in order to pass the skill along to the King’s heirs. And Prince Mati already had a Tutor.

But when his Tutor was executed for being a part of the Resistance, she somehow managed to pass the tests and get chosen to train to become the next Tutor. Which meant she’d finally be able to learn what her father’s words were. She knew the job had risks. She just never imagined the complications – of having to choose between loyalty to the King or committing treason, of having to fight her growing feelings for someone completely unattainable, of having to keep secrets that could cost her her life.

Spanning several years, SWORD AND VERSE imagines a world where power stems from being able to read and write. Even among the rulers, only the highest echelons get to learn all the symbols that make up their written language. And those enslaved are kept powerless through ignorance and intimidation.

Kathy MacMillan created an elaborate and amazingly well-crafted mythology in SWORD AND VERSE. Her world is richly detailed, stunning, fascinating. She introduced a likable, sympathetic, and very relatable main character in Raisa. And she developed a story that is compelling, meaningful, empowering, unputdownable.

Secrets, lies, deception and betrayal abound in this utterly captivating story filled with cruelty, injustice, merciless enemies, traitors, deadly plots, heartbreak, romance, rebellion and myth. It is a gripping, electrifying and all-consuming read that will keep you on the edge of your seat from its very first line to its very last.
