    The Audio Excerpt

    The Review

THE ROSE SOCIETY is darker, the characters deadlier, the story more action-packed, electrifying, riveting than the first book in the series. There are new enemies, new alliances, new and more powerful abilities, and new goals and motivations for those in power and those who want to be in power.

Kicked out of the Dagger Society, reeling from all that she has lost, Adelina Amouteru is not about to let guilt consume her. Not when she tried so hard to do what was right. Not when she felt just as betrayed as her supposed friends felt. Not when there was a chance that she could get her revenge.

Forced to flee Kenettra with its new Queen and the leader of the Inquisition hunting the Young Elites and imprisoning all malfettos, Adelina and her sister Violetta go in search of one of the most notorious Young Elites, Magiano, in the hopes of forging an alliance. Finding him would be tough, even with Violetta’s ability. Convincing him to join them on their quest for vengeance would be even more difficult. They would have to prove themselves worthy allies, which meant trusting a stranger and putting themselves at risk.

But if Adelina ever had any hope of exacting her revenge against Teren Santoro for what he’d done to her and what he took from her, and against Raffaele, the new leader of the Dagger Society, who’d deceived her and abandoned her, she would have to pass Magiano’s test. Which wouldn’t be that much of a challenge if she had the ability to control her rage and her powers and which would be a huge problem is she couldn’t.

The story picks up shortly after where it left off in the first book in the series and brings readers right back into this danger-filled world with characters who’ve become even more determined, ruthless, blood-thirsty, power hungry. It introduces new characters who are just as driven, violent, malicious. And it ratchets up the intensity of the conflicts, the battles, and Adelina’s struggle with her illusions, her anger, her sanity.

Author Marie Lu has taken her story and characters to a much darker place in this sequel. The thirst for power supersedes the goal of doing good, of saving innocents. Plans are put into action that pit former allies against one another in lethal clashes, that cross the divide between life and death, and that are guaranteed to leave substantial carnage and destruction in their wake.

THE ROSE SOCIETY is chilling, gripping, and wickedly appealing. The pace is lightning-fast. The action does not let up. The characters’ cold-blooded and vicious natures are both fascinating and disturbing. It is a story that is shocking, horrifying, and completely and totally mind-blowing in all the very best ways.

    Description…

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

    The Review

THE YOUNG ELITES is an amazing and incredibly exciting start to this new series by Author Marie Lu. The world is fascinating, the story is darkly alluring, the characters are intriguing and dangerous and fierce. It is riveting. It delivers the unexpected. It is guaranteed to make you eager to dive into the next installment in the series. It is a thrilling and imaginative and immensely entertaining read.

The blood fever left Adelina Amouteru disfigured, branding her a malfetto, making her an outcast, someone to be despised, someone to be feared. Even more so after the rumors began to circulate of the existence of malfettos with extraordinary abilities.

Yet, no matter how fearsome they were rumored to be, these gifted malfettos were deemed valuable. So much so that her father hoped to be able to capitalize on that value. But no matter how hard he pushed her, or how cruel to her he was, Adelina could not call upon any powers. She felt a darkness growing within her, but no gifts emerged. She was not exceptional. She was not one of the Young Elites.

Or so she thought, until she was caught attempting to flee the future her father arranged for her. Because she didn’t just imagine the shadows that struck fear in her father’s heart, she created them.

Marie Lu created a world that is governed by fear, where those who are different are ostracized, targeted for violence, used to further the agenda of a power-hungry queen and a zealot of an inquisitor. She introduced characters who range from anti-hero to villain and gave them abilities that enable them to dispense dark justice, create chaos, inflict pain, spread terror.

The author does not promise readers a happy ending. She did not create heroes and heroines and saviors. The battles are not between good and evil, but between evil and not-quite-so-evil. The motives are greed, vengeance, power. The outcomes are brutal, destructive, deadly, jaw-dropping. The result is a stunning and chilling and deliciously dark and breathtaking story.

Readers who prefer their characters a bit devious, a touch menacing, not always well-intentioned, yet wickedly appealing will fall instantly in love with THE YOUNG ELITES. Secrets, blackmail, deception, betrayal, deadly plots, lethal confrontations, and mass executions make for an edge-of-your-seat and electrifying read. And with the promise of new characters, a new setting, a new society, this series is an absolute must must-read.

    Description…

Genetically engineered identical twins Kyle and Connor McAdams were born two years apart. Their parents figured it was safer that way, to increase their odds of survival. Connor was born first, paving an impossibly perfect path for Kyle to follow in. He was the best at everything, whether it was claiming the title of valedictorian, or leading his high school’s football team to victory as their quarterback. Kyle doesn’t ever think he’ll be able to live up, and so he doesn’t even try.

But when Connor suddenly dies from a heart attack, Kyle learns of other genetically modified kids who’ve also started to die on their eighteenth birthdays and he’s suddenly motivated—to save his own life. Like Connor and all the rest, Kyle was conceived at the Genesis Innovations Laboratory, where the mysterious Dr. Mueller conducted his experiments on them. The clock’s ticking as Kyle searches for answers: who was Dr. Mueller really, and what did he do to them at the lab that’s causing their hearts to stop at eighteen? He must unravel the clues quickly, before he becomes another perfect, blue-eyed corpse. When the clues lead him to even more danger, an experimental heart transplant may be the only way to survive the death trap in his DNA.

    The Guest Post

Welcome to the fabulous world of twins!

    by Debra Dockter

I guess my fascination with twins started in fifth grade. That’s when a certain pair of twin boys began attending the same elementary school I went to. They were gorgeous, and even though nature was nice enough to create two of them, I knew my chances of ‘going steady’ with either were slim to none.

My fascination grew once I started doing research for Deadly Design. I got the idea of having identical twins born two years apart, but first, I had to see if it was possible. In doing research, I found out that it was possible to create an egg using in vitro, having the egg split, and then having the parents decide to give birth to one while freezing the other. (Not only is it possible, it’s actually happened.)

Who wouldn’t want a twin? Sure, sharing birthdays and the Christmas budget with an identical sibling might be tough, but then again, you’d always have a playmate, always have an extra brain to come up with schemes and plots and ways to combat childhood boredom.

In doing research, I even learned of a jewel thief who had an identical twin. Both brothers said the other was responsible for the crime and since investigators couldn’t prove which twin the DNA belonged to, no charges were ever filed.

If I’d had a twin, I don’t think I’d rob a bank or a jewelry store, but it would have been nice to have someone to blame when a cookie went missing. Of course, another interesting fact I learned is that while twins have 99.99% identical DNA, they don’t have identical fingerprints. Originally, their prints form the same, but as they touch each other and the amniotic sack they live in, their finger prints change. I guess it was a good thing for the jewel thief that he wore gloves!

For Kyle, the twin thing isn’t exactly typical. Having an identical twin brother two years older than you would have to be somewhat…creepy. To know what you’re going to look like in the future, know exactly when puberty is going to hit – yikes! To see yourself always slightly out of your own reach. And then there’s the fact that, unknown to you, you and your brother have been genetically enhanced.

Not only is Connor older than Kyle, he’s magnificent. Good looking, athletic, intelligent – Connor is like a demi god visiting from Mount Olympus, and Kyle knows he can never step out from beneath his brother’s shadow. Sure, they share the same DNA, but they’re not the same people. They don’t have the same drives, the same ambitions. What if Connor is only amazing because he works for it? Genetics may help a person build six pack abs, but they aren’t going to form themselves. Sit-ups will have to play into the equation and only trips to the gym can build those massive round biceps and only studying and doing your homework will get you a perfect score on your ACT’s.

Kyle’s good at video games, but compared to gymnasiums and football stadiums, there’s little glory to be had in his basement bedroom.

Deadly Design is about twins, but more than that, it’s about brothers who just want to relate to each other. It’s also about romance, evil scientists, high school, marines and trying to save yourself from the tiny bombs in your DNA.

It’s about living and loving to the fullest extent that we can because nobody knows how much time they really have. Not even demi-gods.

    The Review

Stunningly gorgeous, devastatingly heartbreaking and beautifully written, THE WRATH & THE DAWN will transport you to a world of secrets, revenge, treachery, heartache, love and loss. A world ruled by a king, a monster, who takes a new bride each night and sacrifices her at dawn. A world where one girl is willing to risk her own life for the chance to end his tyranny and keep another family from suffering.

It’s a story that invites you to learn its secrets. It beguiles you with stories within the story. It keeps you on edge wondering when – when will Shahrzad strike, when will Khalid grow tired of her, when will it be her final dawn, when will Tariq attempt to save her – and asking why and how and what if – Why is Khalid executing his brides? How can he live with what he’s done? How can Shazi stand to spend one second in his presence? What if she fails? What if she succeeds? What if Tariq fails? And what if he succeeds?

Renée Ahdieh created a story that is exciting and enchanting, nail-biting and suspenseful. She brings together the most unlikely of characters, makes them fall in love, puts tremendous obstacles in their way, and gives them impossible odds. She expands her world by telling the story from multiple characters’ points of view. And she teases with the promise of what’s to come in future books in the series.

The author gives readers a strong female main character in Shahrzad. She’s quick, clever, brave, fierce and passionate and can be sharp-tongued and imperious. But she also has a vulnerability to her, and is kind and loyal and instantly likable. Khalid is also strong, which makes for an exhilarating dynamic between the two. He is a skilled swordsman, a seemingly ruthless leader, quick-tempered, arrogant, secretive and cold, but yet vulnerable, redeemable and fiercely protective.

THE WRATH & THE DAWN is an enticing and exquisitely told story. It combines action and romance and heartbreak and anguish into a tale that is positively epic. Not all questions will be answered. Not all plans will be revealed. Not all alliances will be forged. Not all threats will be eliminated. And not all dangers will have abated by the story’s end, setting the stage for an even more thrilling and nerve-wracking and potentially heartrending sequel.

If you’re looking for a story that is breathtaking and moving and absolutely amazing, Renée Ahdieh’s debut is a must.
