The thrilling romance of young Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler continues in the sizzling sequel to the New York Times bestselling Alex & Eliza: A Love Story

    1781. Albany, New York.

As the war for American independence rages on, Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler begin their new life as a married couple. Still, Alex is as determined as ever to prove his mettle and secure his legacy . . . even if that means leaving his beloved Eliza behind to join the front lines at the Battle of Yorktown. But when the war unexpectedly arrives on Eliza’s doorstep, she must fight for a better future–for their fledgling country and for her marriage.

Yet even after the Revolution comes to its historic close, Alex and Eliza’s happily-ever-after is threatened. Eliza struggles to build a home in the hustle and bustle of New York City just as Alex’s burgeoning law practice brings him up against his greatest rival–the ambitious young lawyer Aaron Burr. And with Alex’s star on the rise, Eliza can’t help but feel neglected by a husband who seems to have time for everyone but her. Torn apart by new trials and temptations, can Alex and Eliza’s epic love survive life in the big city?

The battles are just beginning in the sumptuous sequel to Melissa de la Cruz’s New York Times bestselling Alex & Eliza: A Love Story.

My Top 10 Favorite Things About Love & War
    #1 The Challenges

Things were not always easy for Eliza or Alex. The war kept them apart. Alex’s ambition kept him away from home much of the time. But their love for each other was strong enough to withstand the many challenges they faced as husband and wife.

“She knows of your ambitions then? General Schuyler asked pointedly.

Alex’s words caught in his throat. He could not lie to his father-in-law. “We have not discussed it yet, but I know she will understand. She has your own bravery as a prior example, after all.”

“Hamilton,” John said sharply. “She will be crushed.”

    #2 The Humor

Much like the first book in the series, the humor makes this book special, and makes the characters more real-to-life. There is no shortage of moments or dialogue that will make you smile.

“May I suggest that for your next couple of visits you wear something more comfortable? Though that gown is beautiful, and you are a vision in it, I will not be ready for oils for at least a few days. I must first learn how your face paints.”

“My face paints?” Eliza laughed nervously. “Unless I were to take the brush between my teeth, I do not think it will paint at all.”

    #3 Eliza

In this sequel, Eliza beats Alex, hands down, as my favorite character. Her strength, her bravery, her fortitude, her intelligence – and of course her wit – make her even more likable than when we first met her.

“You have a saucy mouth,” the apparent leader said. “Especially for a genteel, unarmed woman.”

“I am armed with my God-given womanhood, which is more than enough to protect me from the likes of you. And soon enough our father will be back with twenty men, and then I wonder what will protect you,” said Eliza angrily.

    #4 The History

It is still an incredibly exciting time in our young nation’s history when this story takes place (1781-1784). We are still fighting. We are still trying to find our way, free from Britain’s rule. There is so much possibility, so much undecided. The need for independence for the colonies goes against the need for a united country. And it all makes for a very compelling read.

It was a heady time of chaos and change. Both young spouses contributed to the political and moral character of this new nation that had, against all odds, torn itself off from the most powerful empire on earth, and found itself in the unexpected position of having to decide what kind of nation it would be. Would it be a monarchy or a republic? A loose confederacy of thirteen competing states, or a unified polity whose far-flung and disparate regions each contributed their unique strengths to make up for the deficiencies and weaknesses of the others?

And above all, how would it conduct itself?

    #5 Eliza’s fury

Eliza is not passive or quiet or accepting or docile. She does not fit into society’s expected role for her. And she does not let Alex forget who she is or what she expects from him.

“My darling, please,” Alex said, grabbing her hands. “There are some decisions a man has to do on his own.”

Eliza resisted the urge to pull her hands from Alex, lest she cause a scene. But her fury was so palpable that Alex dropped them of his own accord.

“A man maybe. But a husband–never,” she said coldly. She stormed away from him, her head held high.

    #6 The Chapter Titles

I don’t always notice chapter titles. Especially with books I get caught up in. It’s easy to forget they’re there as you race through the story, desperate to uncover what happens next. The more captivating the story, the less likely I am to notice them – even in a print edition, with pretty fonts.

But the chapter titles really stand out in this second installment in the series. They make me that much more intrigued by what I am to discover in the chapter I’m embarking on. And so I make the extra effort to pause to notice them, knowing that they’ll pique my curiosity and make me read just a little bit faster.

And while I won’t reveal all my favorites, my most favorites are: The Man Who Ate New York, Hot Towels!, Don’t Forget to Take Out the Trash, and Salad Days.

    #7 Alex

While he may have fallen a bit further down on my list of favorites in this second book in the series, he is still a big part of why I love this story. He is driven. He does love Eliza fiercely. And without Alex there would be no Alex & Eliza.

“My dearest, bravest girl,” he murmured, bending down to kiss her on the soft spot near her ear. “I am home now. You are my home.”

    #8 The Writing

I love how Melissa de la Cruz tells a story. Especially one that has been written by history already. She makes it come alive. She makes it relatable and magical, all at once. She turns dry facts into interesting ones. She turns names into people. She turns historical happenings into moments and events.

She certainly made these two historical figures into people I wish I’d met and gotten to know. Especially Eliza Hamilton.

    #9 The Marriage

I suppose I could have said the romance, but their marriage was much more than that. There was love. But there were also disagreements and obstacles and challenges. Some due to the time period, some due to expectations of the time, some due to distance, some due to Alex’s drive. It wasn’t a perfect marriage, there was no wedded bliss, but it felt very real and very strong – which is why it’s a top favorite.

And, of course, the fact that even with all of that…

…Alex literally swept her off her feet and carried her over the threshold. Eliza giggled in his arms, giddy to think that they were alone at least–with no servants, sisters, little brothers, or parents in sight…

    #10 The Settings (Locations)

Coming in at number 10, once again, I just have to list setting – or in this case settings plural – as a favorite. I always love getting to “see” different places at different times throughout history through an author’s eyes. Even if the settings are sometimes completely or partially fictional.

But I am partial to New York. And I love that a portion of the story is set in the city of New York. It lets me imagine what life was like there at the end of the 18th century following the hard fought battles in the New York Campaign, and the retreat of the British (finally) in 1783.

And while the author didn’t have too much leeway in choosing the settings for her story, she very much made them a wonderful part of it.

    1777. Albany, New York.

As battle cries of the American Revolution echo in the distance, servants flutter about preparing for one of New York society’s biggest events: the Schuylers’ grand ball. Descended from two of the oldest and most distinguished bloodlines in New York, the Schuylers are proud to be one of their fledgling country’s founding families, and even prouder still of their three daughters–Angelica, with her razor-sharp wit; Peggy, with her dazzling looks; and Eliza, whose beauty and charm rival those of both her sisters, though she’d rather be aiding the colonists’ cause than dressing up for some silly ball.

Still, Eliza can barely contain her excitement when she hears of the arrival of one Alexander Hamilton, a mysterious, rakish young colonel and General George Washington’s right-hand man. Though Alex has arrived as the bearer of bad news for the Schuylers, he can’t believe his luck–as an orphan, and a bastard one at that–to be in such esteemed company. And when Alex and Eliza meet that fateful night, so begins an epic love story that would forever change the course of American history.

    The Review

Melissa de la Cruz brought to life an enchanting and delightful romance in ALEX & ELIZA. Based on the imagined courtship of two historical figures, the story seamlessly weaves together fact with fiction, resulting in a tale that is interesting and engaging, that sparks curiosity about the lives of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler, and that gives these two real-life characters personality and voice. It is a captivating and thoroughly enjoyable read that will have readers who don’t already know running to Wikipedia to find out what happens next.

In Revolutionary America, there was little time and opportunity for romance. Marriages were practical, meant to strengthen alliances, join together two families, pass along wealth in exchange for title, rid a household of the burden of providing for their “of age” daughters.

But when Alex met Eliza, he couldn’t help but fall for her beauty, her wit, her more unassuming and practical nature. And although he knew that he didn’t have a name or wealth to offer her, he hoped she might see past that to the man he was and would be.

Eliza didn’t want to like the handsome, charming and chivalrous aide-de-camp to Washington. Not when it was Alex who delivered the news of her father’s court-martial and went on to prosecute him for dereliction of duty. But his appreciation for her assistance with the troops and his affection for her that was unwavering for the more than two years since their first meeting, made it impossible for her not to return those feelings.

But without letting his intentions be known to her and her family, they couldn’t have a proper courtship. And with her family’s insistence on marrying off their daughters posthaste and preferably to suitors of means, there was no time for Alex to prove himself worthy of courting Eliza. Which meant that if her family decided on a more suitable match for their daughter, any future they had hoped for together would be gone, and they would both remain forever heartbroken.

Melissa de la Cruz adds in just the right amounts of history to make her story feel authentic and yet still keep it entertaining. She brings in humor to keep things light. And she keeps the focus on the subtle flirtations, the witty banter, the stolen moments that make up the romance between Alex and Eliza.

For those readers who are just being introduced to Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler, ALEX & ELIZA promises to be a wonderful, sweet, and hopeful love story. Those who know a bit more about the two may find it a touch more bittersweet. But all who read this bewitching and irresistible romance will fall in love with Alex and Eliza’s love story and wish for it to be true.

Orphan Black meets Lord of the Flies in this riveting new thriller from the co-author of the Virals series.

It’s been happening since Min was eight. Every two years, on her birthday, a strange man finds her and murders her in cold blood. But hours later, she wakes up in a clearing just outside her tiny Idaho hometown—alone, unhurt, and with all evidence of the horrifying crime erased.

Across the valley, Noah just wants to be like everyone else. But he’s not. Nightmares of murder and death plague him, though he does his best to hide the signs. But when the world around him begins to spiral toward panic and destruction, Noah discovers that people have been lying to him his whole life. Everything changes in an eye blink.

For the planet has a bigger problem. The Anvil, an enormous asteroid threatening all life on Earth, leaves little room for two troubled teens. Yet on her sixteenth birthday, as she cowers in her bedroom, hoping not to die for the fifth time, Min has had enough. She vows to discover what is happening in Fire Lake and uncovers a lifetime of lies: a vast conspiracy involving the sixty-four students of her sophomore class, one that may be even more sinister than the murders.

    The Review

NEMESIS is a stunning, action- and suspense-filled mind-bender of a read. With a mystery that will keep you guessing, twists that you won’t see coming, secrets, lies, deception, and betrayal, this addictive, heart-stopping, and unpredictable thriller is not to be missed.

An asteroid on a potential collision course with the earth may have rendered Min’s problem obsolete. But getting murdered every other year on her birthday is not something she can shake off so easily. Even if the end is nigh.

And she wants answers. Answers as to who the man in the black suit is, why he wants her dead, why he only comes for her on her even birthdays, and how she can wake up the next morning with absolutely no trace of the crime perpetrated against her evident.

Already an outsider in her small hometown of Fire Lake, she’s not sure who she can turn to for help. Her mom didn’t believe her when it first happened when she was young. She doesn’t want to risk alienating her only friend Tack by telling him the truth. And there’s something about her therapist, Dr. Lowell, that she just doesn’t trust.

But when her investigation leads to information that’s too big for her to handle on her own, she’ll have to put her trust in someone. Especially if her suspicions are correct and things go so far beyond herself and the man who kills her.

Brendan Reichs delivers a complex and intriguing story, told in five parts in first-person alternating points of view, that is chock full of surprises. He gives readers a puzzle to solve, introduces the possibility of a cataclysmic event, hints at potential connections and elaborate conspiracies, and then threatens to blow their minds with a shocking turn of events.

The author lets Min tell the first part of his story, who is strong, independent, clever and determined. He passes the baton to Noah, a quiet, indecisive, weak-willed follower, to tell the next part. And for the remainder, he lets them take turns uncovering the truth about what’s been happening, leading up to the jaw-dropping, cliffhanger ending.

An exhilarating, spine-tingling, all-consuming read, NEMESIS is the brilliant start to an absolutely must, must, must read series.

    The Review

With a power hungry ruler on the brink of madness hellbent on exacting vengeance, expanding their empire, and crushing their enemies, it offers action, excitement, thrills. And with unexpected alliances, a dangerous journey, and fallen anti-heroes, it promises to be suspenseful, gripping, heartbreaking.

She is on the verge of gaining everything the dark part of her desires, but she has lost what she loves most. Her abilities have allowed her to rule, but they come at a steep price.

She is merciless toward those who stand against her. Her cruelty knows no bounds. Her enemies seek her destruction. She can trust no one.

And yet she’ll have to if she wants to survive, silence the voices, defeat the illusions, keep her sanity, save the world.

Fast-paced, darkly appealing, beautifully written, THE MIDNIGHT STAR is an outstanding conclusion to the trilogy. Marie Lu took her characters on a journey that readers might not have anticipated. She gave them compassion, she made them vulnerable, she offered them a chance at redemption. She allowed them to revel in their darkness but gave them the opportunity to choose the light.

The author does an amazing job wrapping up her story and series. It is heart-rending. It is hopeful. It is a more than satisfying ending that leaves room for the reader to imagine what might follow.

THE MIDNIGHT STAR is a story that captivates, that will fascinate, that guarantees to keep readers on the edge of their seats. And, yes, there will be tears. For those who enjoy an electrifying read with villainous heroes, epic and terrifying powers, action and adventure, and gorgeous writing, this story is a must.

    Description…

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

The much anticipated sequel to the breathtaking The Wrath and the Dawn, lauded by Publishers Weekly as “a potent page-turner of intrigue and romance.”

I am surrounded on all sides by a desert. A guest, in a prison of sand and sun. My family is here. And I do not know whom I can trust.

In a land on the brink of war, Shahrzad has been torn from the love of her husband Khalid, the Caliph of Khorasan. She once believed him a monster, but his secrets revealed a man tormented by guilt and a powerful curse—one that might keep them apart forever. Reunited with her family, who have taken refuge with enemies of Khalid, and Tariq, her childhood sweetheart, she should be happy. But Tariq now commands forces set on destroying Khalid’s empire. Shahrzad is almost a prisoner caught between loyalties to people she loves. But she refuses to be a pawn and devises a plan.

While her father, Jahandar, continues to play with magical forces he doesn’t yet understand, Shahrzad tries to uncover powers that may lie dormant within her. With the help of a tattered old carpet and a tempestuous but sage young man, Shahrzad will attempt to break the curse and reunite with her one true love.

    Guest Post

Renée Ahdieh On Writing the eNovellas

What was it like to write the e-novellas before the release of THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER? Was it fun to imagine the different perspectives, and did it make you think of your characters in a different way?

I had such a wonderful time writing the e-novellas! Of course any chance to write a pivotal scene from Khalid’s perspective is just amazing, as he’s such a complex character to write. Like a boy who hides his entire inner world all his life. I was always particularly struck by what Khalid must have been thinking when he first met Shahrzad. That scene in the audience hall was from Shahrzad’s perspective in THE WRATH & THE DAWN, so we only ever get the briefest glimpse into what Khalid must have been thinking. It was insanely fun to switch things up in the e-novellas and explore his thoughts and feelings in these pivotal moments. Also the second e-novella from Khalid’s perspective fills in some important gaps—specifically his thoughts and feelings when he returns to discover Rey decimated and Shahrzad gone. The way in which he assumes blame for each of these things is both very telling of his character and important information for how he intends to handle everything in THE ROSE & THE DAGGER. I hope everyone loves the e-novellas as much as I enjoyed writing them!

I probably had the most fun putting together Despina and Jalal’s backstory. I’d always had an idea of what might have transpired between them, but to really get the chance to flesh it out and give them their own solid narrative was a terrific experience. Plus, Despina schools Jalal so hard, and it literally had me laughing out loud as I wrote it. The great thing about these two characters is that—despite their discrepancies from the perspective of society, as one is cousin to the king and the other is a servant—they are both so evenly matched. Neither is the type to bow to the wind. And when they first meet, both of them are seeking something that haven’t yet found—a person willing to see through the veneer. Because both these characters are something else beneath the surface.
