Book Blogger New Year’s Challenge: Day 6 – Best Book of 2013

    Book Blogger NY Challenge

Today is Day 6 of Parajunkee’s Book Blogger New Year’s Challenge. And if you saw my post yesterday you’ll know just how tough it was for me to pick a worst book. Well, as I mentioned in that post, it’s just as challenging for me to call one book the best book.

I’m just as much a chicken about choosing a favorite read. I feel just as guilty for labeling a book as the “best” when there are so many books I adore. And it’s even harder for me to narrow down the long list of books I love the best to single one out as the best of the best.

Arrrrggh! I soooo wish it was tomorrow. Peeves are way easier than favorite reads.

    Anyway…

For those of you who might want to participate but haven’t yet heard about this challenge, just click on the link above for more details. But here is the schedule of posts…

Day One – YOUR BLOGGER RESOLUTIONS
Day Two – YOUR PROS & CONS OF BLOGGING LIST
Day Three – THE BOOKS OF 2013 YOU ARE SAD YOU MISSED
Day Four – THE BOOKS OF 2014 YOU WON’T MISS
Day Five – WORST BOOK OF 2013

Day Thirteen – SHARE A BLOGGER HORROR STORY
Day Fourteen – BLOGGING WISH LIST OF 2014

    Best Book of 2013

I am so tempted to totally cheat on this post and list as my favorite read of 2013 a book that has absolutely nothing to do with book blogging.

    Sailing Made Easy

SAILING MADE EASY by The American Sailing Association was an incredibly helpful and interesting book and one of my favorite reads of 2013. Of course it wasn’t released in 2013, I just read it in 2013. And it doesn’t have anything to do with my blog, so calling this my favorite read of 2013 wouldn’t be fair.

I also fell madly and passionately in love with Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. But the two books in that series that were my favorites were also not released in 2013 and so I don’t feel right choosing either of those books.

After much internal debate and self-flaggellation, I sort of narrowed it down to two books. One was Rachel Vincent’s WITH ALL MY SOUL which was my favorite read of the first half of the year.

    With All My Soul

And the other was Kresley Cole’s ENDLESS KNIGHT which was my favorite read for the second half of the year.

    Endless Knight

    Why they were favorites?

WITH ALL MY SOUL was an epic finish to an amazing series. It was filled with heartbreak and nerve-wracking suspense. It introduced a brand new character that was so interesting and exciting and is worthy of his very own series. It put me on a roller coaster that did not quit. And it didn’t rush the ending nor did it didn’t tie things up so perfectly that it felt saccharine sweet.

And then there was that whole thing with time. That was a total mind eff. It turned me completely upside down and inside out and left me reeling for days. Then, once I recovered from that I had to recover from all the awesome that was, is and always will be, Tod.

ENDLESS KNIGHT was a sequel to an amazing, sexy, dark and imaginative book that not only met the challenge of being as good as its predecessor, but was able to surpass my wildest expectations for it. It was darker, so much sexier, even more interesting, exciting, amazing, and the cliffhanger ending was even more of a killer than the first.

I had hoped, wished and hoped, that I would love Death as much as I wanted to. I also hoped that my love for Jack wouldn’t fade. Well, I adored Death more than I thought I could. And Jackson was every bit as stubborn and sexy and lovable as he was in book one. Oh, and the game was even deadlier, Evie was even more fiercely awesome, and the world was even more intriguing.
    line2

Well, even though I took the plunge and listed a couple of “best” books, they are by no means all of the books I consider to be the best of the year. There were so many authors whose books wowed and amazed me, whose characters I shed tears over, whose writing made me a fan for life.

Most every book I read in its entirety in 2013 was at some point during the read a “best” book for me. So it sucks – big time – that I had to choose just two. And there is no way I can choose between those two I picked to label one as better than the other. I don’t compare books to one another. I can only hope to judge them by my emotional reaction to the read, how long the book clings to me after I read it, and how desperate I am to re-read it.

Right now, for example, I’m currently fighting the urge to ditch my TBR pile and just go back and re-read all the books in the Fever series.

    But what about you?

Were you able to select just one book as your favorite? Did you think about skipping Day 6 of the challenge so you wouldn’t have to?

Like me, were you able to pare down your list of favorite reads, but could not limit your “best” book to just one? Or were you able to unequivocally pinpoint one book as the “best of the best” for 2013?

If not (or if so) I’d love to know!

    Best Book Boyfriends of 2013

Ack! Once again the rules require that I choose my book boyfriends based upon books that were not only released in 2013 but that I read in 2013. So unfair! That means I can’t choose Barron’s or V’lane from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. *sobs* And I can’t choose Austin from Talia Vance’s GOLD.

A few of last year’s book boyfriends made the cut this year. But there are also a few new adds to the list.

And, yes, some of those bookish boyfriends were from the same book. Who says there has to be just one bookish boyfriend per book?

A Few Other Bookish Boys I Love

I have so many book boyfriends from the books I read. Most of them are the bad boys, but a few of them happen to be good. And if I had just a little more time this week to create these top ten posts, I might have opted to do one list of Bad Boy Book Boyfriends and another of Good Boy Book Boyfriends.

But as I have way too many posts to create and so little time to get them done, for today I’m sticking with just the one list. However, I can’t pass up the chance to list just a few other bookish boys I adore.

Will of Jessa Holbrook’s WHILE YOU’RE AWAY

    Colt of Karsten Knight’s AFTERGLOW

Ethan of Chloe Neill’s HOUSE RULES and BITING BAD

Warner of Tahereh Mafi’s DESTROY ME

    Logan of C.J. Redwine’s DECEPTION

    Fenn of Lesley Livingston’s DESCENDANT

Jules of Amy Plum’s UNTIL I DIE

Kai of Wendy Higgins’ SWEET PERIL

Dante of Victoria Scott’s THE COLLECTOR and THE LIBERATOR

Finn of Jessica Spotswood’s STAR CURSED

And, of course, there are so many more… but this is supposed to just be a Top Ten List and with these extra boys I’m now up to twenty.

    Best ____ of 2013

Last year I chose favorite quotes. But this year I’m going for CHARACTER COUPLES. Even though many of this year’s reads paired up characters I’d rather see paired with someone else, there were quite a few character couples I love, love, loved.

And instead of rambling about all of my reasons why I love these character couples I thought I’d let the characters speak for themselves. They do a much better job of it than I ever could. Though I’m so very tempted to chime in…

    line2

    Favorite Character Couples 2013

    1.

    Shadowfever

SHADOWFEVER (Fever #5) by Karen Marie Moning

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Mac and Barrons…

“I’m not the hero, Mac. Never have been. Never will be. Let us be perfectly clear: I’m not the antihero, either, so quit waiting to discover my hidden potential. There’s nothing to redeem me.”

    I want him anyway.

It’s what he wanted to know.

I exhale impatiently and shove hair from my face. “Are you going to talk me to death or fuck me, Jericho Barrons?”

    2.

    Endless Knight

ENDLESS KNIGHT (The Aracana Chronicles #2) by Kresley Cole

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Evie and Death…

“What are you thinking about, creature?” His words were husky.

Licking your runes? Thank God he couldn’t read my thoughts anymore. Face flushing, I grasped for something to say. “I bet you were expecting a taller Empress this time around.” Lame.

“I would change nothing about your appearance.”

When we locked eyes in the mirror, his burning gaze made even more heat cascade through my body.

Death rose with that lethal grace and strode toward me. I swallowed. Would he try to kiss me? And what would I do if he did?

    3.

    Through the Zombie Glass

THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS (White Rabbit Chronicles #2) by Gena Showalter

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Alice and Cole…

“I just… I can’t seem to stay away. You’re like a magnet, and I’m drawn. And what about you? You’re supposed to yell at me, scream profanities and tell me to go and never come back. Why aren’t you yelling?” he asked almost bitterly.

Because, despite everything, I liked that he was here.

    Foolish girl.

“You want me to yell?” I said, and drew in a deep breath, preparing. “I will.”

He shook his head, looked up at me through the thick shield of those dark, dark lashes. “It’s too late for that. I’m going to kiss you, Ali.”

Kiss… Yes… No! “You made your bed.”

“I know. But I still want you in it.”

    4.

    With All My Soul

WITH ALL MY SOUL (Soul Screamers #7) by Rachel Vincent

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Kaylee and Tod…

“This is the most frighteningly beautiful mouth I have ever seen. The most terrifyingly delicious lips I have ever tasted. These lips make me hungry for more every time I kiss them. This mouth, and the tongue inside it…they speak words I hang on to. Words that make me want to be a better man. Words I would gladly build my entire afterlife around. But they also say things that terrify me. Things that send chills all the way to my heart. They speak about dangers I can’t prevent. Threats I can’t always see. They threaten to do things that could get you hurt, when every single beat of my heart tells me that I need to protect you.”

I stared at him, stunned, and he leaned in to kiss me again, softly. Almost chastely.

    5.

    Crash Into You

CRASH INTO YOU (Pushing the Limits #3) by Katie McGarry

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Isaiah and Rachel…

Rachel tries to lower her head, but I reach up and touch her chin. “Don’t.”

I tilt her head up, engulfing her line of vision. She’s going to see me and me alone. No cars, no Zach, none of the other assholes trying to win her eye during the night. The sweet scent of jasmine entwining with the salty smell of the beach rushes into my lungs. I lick my lips, wanting to kiss her, but I’m too full of energy to dare let my lips brush hers.

Beneath my fingertips, her pulse beats wildly. “I don’t understand you, Isaiah.”

“Then we have something in common, because I don’t get you at all.”

    6.

    Sweet Peril Cover

SWEET PERIL (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Anna and Kaidan…

“For the record,” he ground out in a guttural whisper, “I was more myself with you during those three days than I’ve ever been with anyone in my life. It’d be easier if I could be fake with you, but you bring out everything in me, little Ann. All of it.”

His sudden fierceness frightened and excited me. He was not in his right mind. I blinked several times before taking a step back and running into the rail. I could do nothing but stare as he went on.

    7.

    Foreplay

FOREPLAY (The Ivy Chronicles #1) by Sophie Jordan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Pepper and Reece…

He gave my sweatshirt a small tug, inexorably pulling me toward him, bit by bit, and it was like the other night again. His presence was overwhelming, the heat that emanated from him. The blue of his eyes that seemed to turn to smoke when he looked at me. I was under his spell. Maybe I had never ceased to be. I’d been spellbound since our first kiss and especially since the night I spent in his loft. Maybe this was what had brought me back here in the middle of the night. Maybe I was hoping to repeat the experience.

“I’ll never lie to you, Pepper.” That soft utterance blew through me like a sonic blast. Crazy, but I heard more than his vow to be honest. The words were full of the expectation that there would be a him and me, an us. That we were really doing this. Whatever this was.

    8.

    While You're Away

WHILE YOU’RE AWAY by Jessa Holbrook

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Sarah and Will…

It was easy to kiss Will Spencer. We moved in tandem, both turning at the same time. It was like we were machined to fit together, the right key in the right lock. Rising on my toes to meet his mouth, I looped my arms around his neck. Stretched against him, I felt long and tall, and strangely lovely. I wasn’t transformed by his touch. I was revealed.

    9.

    The Beautiful and the Cursed

THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED (The Disposessed #1) by Page Morgan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Ingrid and Luc…

Ingrid froze as he grazed his fingers through her hair, scattering a few pins to the floor. Then he gripped the back of her head, his tangled fingers tugging at her hair, and Ingrid thought she could finally read something in the way he looked at her: a longing so tangible that it made her ache.

“I haven’t ended you because you’re my human.”

And then Luc did what he hadn’t done in the orangery. His lips found hers. It was a light sweep of a kiss, and Ingrid, who’d quit breathing, feared he was going to stop again. The idea of it knifed through her and her hands itched to reach up, latch on to him, and refuse the retreat.

    It didn’t come to that.

    10.

    The Collector

THE COLLECTOR (The Collector #1) by Victoria Scott

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

    Dante and Charlie…

“But you need to know the truth. I didn’t mean for this to happen.” I stop, considering what I just said. “Actually, I guess I did mean for this to happen. At first. But then I got to know you, Charlie. I got to see how you are, the things you do for other people. The way you smile when there’s nothing left to smile about, and the way you laugh…it hurts to even hear it. Because it reminds me what it’s like to live. To be happy.” I take a deep breath. “You are beautiful, Charlie. You’re so beautiful, and I can’t believe I let you think you weren’t.”

I turn around but focus on the ground. I can’t see her face. It’ll end me. But my eyes are deceitful, and before I can gouge them from my face, they slide up and land on her. On Charlie. And she’s crying. Tears rolling down her cheeks, sliding into a wide, happy smile.

Best Books I’ve Read in 2013

I read a ton of awesome books this year. Many from the same series by the same author. But as I was trying so very hard to keep my list to just ten, I decided to choose only one book from each series, even if I read multiple books in a particular series that I thought were amazing.

And I couldn’t list all my favorite reads this year since one or two of them were a secret. Nor could I list all the 2013 releases I love, love, loved since I read some of them in 2012. But I’m not too sad about that, because reading them last year made creating this list just a little bit easier.

There were also a few books I loved in 2013 that were not YA. But in keeping with my typical YA only “best” list, I didn’t include them in this post. Though I plan on posting my non-YA favorites on The Annex. Yes, I’m cheating just a little… as usual. But I just can’t seem to help myself.

    Anyway…

It took me ages to narrow my list down from my original picks and to keep my “honorable mentions” to only four titles, just like last year. But after much hair pulling and nail-biting I was able to get it done.

    line2

The Best I’ve Read in 2013

    1.

    With All My Soul

WITH ALL MY SOUL by Rachel Vincent

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

As sad as I was to see this series end, I still couldn’t help falling madly in love with this last installment. It was heartbreaking and nerve-wracking and exciting and heartwarming and I loved every single minute of the read.

I especially loved the fact that I was able to become intrigued by a brand new character, that the story wasn’t rushed and that the ending didn’t leave me feeling like something was missing. It was the perfect ending to an amazing series and I couldn’t have loved it any more than I did.

    2.

    Endless Knight

    ENDLESS KNIGHT by Kresley Cole

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Kresley Cole’s Arcana Chronicles are completely and totally amazing. They are so my kind of books. From beginning to end in both books in this series I was utterly riveted.

And while I didn’t think it was possible, this second book in the series was even more exciting than the first. It was darker, it was hotter, it was all sorts of sexy. The lore was fascinating. And it made me fall head-over-heels in love with Death just like I hoped it would.

To say that I am dying for the next installment in this series would be a major understatement.

    3.

    Through the Zombie Glass

THROUGH THE ZOMBIE GLASS by Gena Showalter

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I read both books in this series in 2013 and absolutely loved both of them. They were unputdownable reads and I couldn’t have been more surprised by the fact that I fell so completely in love with zombie books that gave a nod to Alice in Wonderland.

Gena Showalter was incredibly creative with her stories. She did not skimp on the action. It was edge-of-your-seat exciting. And the love story was angst-filled and twisty-turny to the max.

And as I opted to choose just one of the two books in this series as a favorite, I had to select the one that absolutely killed me in the best possible way.

    The Eternity Cure

THE ETERNITY CURE by Julie Kagawa

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I did not expect to love the Blood of Eden series more than I loved the author’s faerie books. But oh my gosh I couldn’t help myself. Dystopia and vampires are an unexpected combination but one that the author made work so amazingly well.

The characters, the epic journey, the killer cliffhanger all worked together to make this one of my favorite books and not simply a 2013 favorite. I’m talking all-time favorite.

    5.

    Crash Into You

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I fell under Katie McGarry’s spell in 2013. She is a fan-freaking-tastic writer and her Pushing the Limits series is one of my very most favorite contemporary YA series.

I read all three books in this series, plus the novella, in 2013, which made it very hard to choose only one of the books for my top ten list. But I had to choose Isaiah and Rachel’s story, even though I adored Noah and Echo’s story so, so much.

Perhaps it was getting to know and love Isaiah before reading his story that made me love it that much more. Or perhaps it’s simply just that Isaiah is amazing. But whatever the reason, it is my favorite of the series and it’s definitely one of my favorite reads from 2013.

    6.

    Afterglow

    AFTERGLOW by Karsten Knight

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I was devastated to see this series end. The world that Karsten Knight created was so unique and fascinating and exciting. The characters were lovable and detestable and completely and totally kick-a**. And this final installment in the series was just as phenomenal as its predecessors.

And that ending. Oh. My. Gosh. That ending. While I can’t talk about that ending, I will just say that it gives me hope. For a certain character. Oh the possibilities.

    7.

    Star Cursed Cover

    STAR CURSED by Jessica Spotswood

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I was so glad that I got the chance to read both books in The Cahill Witch Chronicles this year. I was completely surprised by how much I loved each of the books. They are not stories in my typical go-to genre and yet both books are among my most favorites.

I couldn’t help but fall in love with the story, the setting, the characters. It’s a totally addictive read and one that’s definitely re-read worthy. Though even after a re-read, it’s no easier to have to wait for the next installment in the series. This I know all too well.

    8.

    The Beautiful and the Cursed

THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED by Page Morgan

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Yet another unexpected favorite on my list is Page Morgan’s THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED. If someone told me that I could fall in love with a gargoyle I would have totally rolled my eyes at them. I might have even told them that they were crazy. I would have definitely thought it.

Well, this author made me not only fall in love with a gargoyle, but her story about them. The sequel is one of my most anticipated reads for 2014. And the wait is killing me.

    9.

    While You're Away

WHILE YOU’RE AWAY by Jessa Holbrook

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

I read this book in its serialized format, with just a few chapters available to read in one sitting. It was exquisite torture. This story was tantalizing and nerve-wracking and beautiful and nerve-wracking – yes I said it twice, but it needed to be said two times… if not more.

I was made to root for a love story that I never would have thought I’d cheer for. I was made to wish and hope for a happily ever after for two characters who, at first, I didn’t think deserved one. I was anxious, I was fearful, I was tentatively hopeful and at times I was even sad. But I was keeping my fingers crossed the entire time for the slim chance that things would work out.

    10.

    A Touch Menacing

A TOUCH MENACING by Leah Clifford

    (GOODREADS | AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE)

Leah Clifford’s Touch Trilogy is one of my favorite series of all time. It’s so very different from anything I’ve ever read. It’s very dark. It is full of surprises. Shocking surprises. Devastating surprises. But it is wicked, wicked awesome.

The end of this final installment in the series left me in tears. And, no, I won’t say whether they’re happy or sad tears. But if you have read this book or you’ve read any of the books in this series by this author I think you will know exactly what kind of tears there were.

This last book was non-stop action, with more than a few punches to the face. I couldn’t devour it fast enough. It was that epic. And if I didn’t think it could get any better, the unpublished epilogue made this book that much more off-the-charts amazing for me. Holy-freaking-wow.

Other Books I Love, Love, Loved

    SweetPeril

    SWEET PERIL by Wendy Higgins

Exciting. Sexy as heck. Captivating from start to finish. Delicious. An absolute must.

    The Testing

    THE TESTING by Joelle Charbonneau

Gripping. Surprising. Totally addictive. A total stand-out.

    The Burning Sky

THE BURNING SKY by Sherry Thomas

Magical. Enchanting. Captivating. Epic. Fan-freaking-tastically good.

    Pivot Point

    PIVOT POINT by Kasie West

    Intriguing. Nerve-wracking. Unputdownable. Amazing.

    Review

ENDLESS KNIGHT is dark and seductive. It’s intense. It’s riveting. It is action-packed from the very first sentence to the very last word on the very last page. It is beautiful and it’s gruesome. It’s tantalizing, it’s thrilling, it’s mind-blowing. It takes readers on an exhilarating, nerve-wracking, suspense-filled and positively electrifying ride. A ride that will leave them dangling precariously off the edge of a very steep cliff.

One player down. Twenty-one remain. The game has now officially begun. The Empress has made the first move and Death is now ready to make his.

With his sights set on Evie, it’s only a matter of time before he finds her, before he acts upon the threats of violence he’s been taunting her with, before they must face one another in a battle, a fight that Evie has never before won. Not as the May Queen. Not as the Red Witch, Phyta. Never.

But as the Poison Princess she must find a way to defeat him. Because in this game, where the prize is immortality and there can be only one winner, the stakes are higher than ever before. With the world on the verge of collapse this might be the final game that gets played. With no one else in their alliance strong enough defeat Death, Evie is their only hope for survival. And with only one lifetime to spend with Jack, losing now would mean losing him forever.

So she must do whatever it takes to win, to defeat Death, an immortal foe. Even if that means giving him her heart.

Author Kresley Cole expanded the world of the Arcana in this sequel – new characters were introduced, new alliances were made, new battles were fought, and one character’s past was revealed. She turned up the heat. She increased the suspense, the tension, the drama. She delivered shocking surprises. She uncovered secrets, lies, betrayals. She created a story that sizzles, is wicked and sexy and utterly enthralling.

ENDLESS KNIGHT picks up where POISON PRINCESS left off and immediately answers the question of what happens next, a question fans of this series have been anxiously awaiting. It continues the characters’ journey across its danger-filled landscape and presents them with new complications, new allies and enemies and even deadlier hurdles to overcome.

The story is filled with unexpected twists and turns that will keep the pages turning. It adds a new bad boy to the mix to make things even more interesting. It keeps things exciting with a new setting and new characters with intriguing abilities. And it all comes together through the author’s gorgeous, grisly, sarcastic, intoxicating and absolutely phenomenal writing.

    Reviewer gives this book…

    6

Like In-N-Out Burger‘s infamous secret menu this one deserves my off-the-menu 6 star rating.

    On a personal note…

Every time I try to write down my personal thoughts about this book I realize that there’s just no way I can do it justice. My words are inadequate to describe just how I felt – how I feel – about this book.

I want to shout, “Oh my gosh you have to buy this book, you have to devour this book and you have to talk to me all about it once you have!”

Because I’m dying to talk to anyone and everyone about it. I’m dying to see what readers thought about what happened with Evie and Jack, what happened with Death and most of all what happened at the end. That ending… that ending is killing me.

I want to talk about how amazing it was to be back in this world, to see what happened after that ending in the first book that absolutely destroyed me, that broke my heart and made me so nervous about what would happen in this book. But words fail.

I want to talk about how reading this book felt like coming home – albeit to a dark and twisted world where human beings are more than a little bit savage, where a deadly game is playing out and where two of those players are favorite characters of mine. But I am unable to express just how happy it made me, how easy it was to love this story.

I want to share just what I thought about how things changed between Evie and Jack, how wary I now am about certain characters I used to trust, how thrilled I am that Death is everything I hoped he’d be and so much more. But every word that comes to mind is insufficient.

I want to talk to about how much I loved every single word of this story, every single direction it went in, every single interaction between the characters, every new character I met – yes, even Ogen – every single tension-filled, nail-biting, steamy hot, heartbreaking, chilling moment. But there are no words.

My words to describe the awesomeness that is this book pale in comparison to just how phenomenal it really is. They’re fumbling, nonsensical, pathetic little things. But they’re all I have. And not saying anything about this book seems somehow worse. So…

ENDLESS KNIGHT is a fan-freaking-tastic sequel. It blew my mind, patched it up and blew it to pieces all over again. It checked all the boxes. Dark – yes and I would have had it no other way. Sexy – yes, yes, yes and I’m talking the hot, steamy, “fan yourself” kind of sexy. Nerve-wracking – oh yes my nerves were frayed, shot, wrecked by the time I reached the end. Suspenseful – yes and of the “hold your breath” as if that would somehow help variety of suspense. Wicked – deliciously, delectably so. Action-packed – oh there was action, all kinds of action. It was intense, edge-of-your-seat exciting, and abso-freaking-lutely amazing.

In every way ENDLESS KNIGHT is, was and forever will be the perfect book for me. I loved the first book in the series – it was a top five favorite last year – but this book, this shocking and gorgeous and gruesome and jaw-dropping sequel moves this series into my top five favorite YA series of all time.

    Favorite passage…

Can I reprint the entire book here? Probably not….

And as most of this book is super spoiler-y choosing just one passage that isn’t too revealing has been an enormous challenge. Because I want to include the one where Jack said… or the one where Jack did… or the one where Death chose…. Yeah, not at all easy.

But I had to choose a Jack passage. Because any passage about Death would reveal things better left discovered in the book. And it’s only a teeny bit spoiler-y.

“We’re out here with no protection from Baggers, no lookout, and I’m still a heartbeat from taking you! You mesmerizing me too? That’s the only goddamned reason I’d still be thinking about you after all this shit. All my life, I never went looking for trouble, but it always found me! You’re just the latest helping of grief.”

My eyes pricked with tears. “I didn’t want it to be like this.”

Oh. My. Gosh. Release date is just about here for ENDLESS KNIGHT and the official final version will be making its way to my Kindle on Monday Midnight. I received the print copy this past week but it’s way too pretty to even think about breaking the spine. So I will have to wait before I can take a peek to see just how different the final version is from the version I read for review.

And the wait is killing me. Absolutely killing me.

I cannot get this book out of my head. It’s there beckoning to me to devour it again, to experience what happened with Evie and Jack and Death just one more time. And I know it won’t leave me alone until I do.

ENDLESS KNIGHT was the book I chose for my Book Watch post. I may have gone on and on about just how amazing it was in that post. Just like I did in my review, which is all set to post on Monday. When I love a book as much as I love this book it is that much harder to wrangle those thoughts, so it’s taken me awhile to finally nail those down and write a semi-coherent review.

So as much as I want to keep talking about how excited I am for this book’s release, how its release means that I’m that much closer to the next book in the series’ release, how there will finally be a bunch of readers who will get the chance to read it so I can talk with them about it, I won’t go on and on. I’ll just end by saying that this is an amazing follow-up, it’s an absolute must-read, must re-read, and must re-read again after that.

I could not love this book any more than I do. And any words I have uttered about it or could utter don’t even come close to explaining just how amazing it is.

    Wild Cards

WILD CARDS by Simone Elkeles will be released in the U.S. on October 1, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Walker Childrens, the print edition is 352 pages.

WILD CARDS is the first book in author Simone Elkeles’ new series of the same name. A release date for the second, currently untitled, book in the series is not yet available.

    Dots_Divider

I am so excited for the release of Simone Elkeles’ WILD CARDS this week. I had the chance to read it early and I loved it, but I am totally thrilled that my finished copy will be downloading to my Kindle on Tuesday.

I love the fact that the author creates characters and stories that are somewhat unconventional. I loved getting to meet Derek and Ashtyn and seeing their relationship develop. And I loved that Ashtyn was someone who was focused, driven and determined in spite of, or perhaps because of, the situation she had at home.

There were a couple moments in this story that brought tears to my eyes. There were some very real issues the characters had to overcome. And what the author put them through made it just so easy to connect with them even when their problems were ones that I couldn’t always relate to.

But I don’t want to reveal those issues and their outcomes in this post, or any post for that matter. I will just say that this was a quick read, an engaging story and one I hope to someday read again.

    Description…

After getting kicked out of boarding school, bad boy Derek Fitzpatrick has no choice but to live with his ditzy stepmother while his military dad is deployed. Things quickly go from bad to worse when he finds out she plans to move them back to her childhood home in Illinois. Derek’s counting the days before he can be on his own, and the last thing he needs is to get involved with someone else’s family drama.

Ashtyn Parker knows one thing for certain–people you care about leave without a backward glance. A football scholarship would finally give her the chance to leave. So she pours everything into winning a state championship, until her boyfriend and star quarterback betrays them all by joining their rival team. Ashtyn needs a new game plan, but it requires trusting Derek—someone she barely knows, someone born to break the rules. Is she willing to put her heart on the line to try and win it all?

    Blackout

BLACKOUT by Robison Wells will be released in the U.S. on October 1, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 432 pages.

BLACKOUT is the first full-length book in author Robison Wells’ new series of the same name. A prequel novella, GOING DARK, was published on August 6th.

    Dots_Divider

I can’t believe that it’s just about October 1st and my Kindle copy of BLACKOUT will be downloading before I will have had the chance to get it on the pile. I grabbed an eARC and was so excited about the prospect of reading it early but clearly that didn’t happen since its release date is just a couple days away.

But I want to read it. Desperately. This book sounds amazing – terrorists, a virus that results in “impossible powers,” “deception” and “catastrophic danger.” I am totally intrigued. And I’m even more curious about how the book’s title factors into the story.

I’m tempted to at least read the prequel novella this week to find out what causes things to go dark. But I just have to find out how the lives of two trained terrorists and two high school students become intertwined and whether an explosion is triggered that “ends it all.”

And I seriously need to read this book in the next couple of weeks.

    Description…

Laura and Alec are trained terrorists.

Jack and Aubrey are high school students.

There was no reason for them to ever meet.

But now, a mysterious virus is spreading throughout America, infecting teenagers with impossible powers. And these four are about to find their lives intertwined in a complex web of deception, loyalty, and catastrophic danger—where one wrong choice could trigger an explosion that ends it all.

    How to Love

    addtogoodreads

HOW TO LOVE by Katie Cotugno will be released in the U.S. on October 1, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Balzer + Bray, the print edition is 400 pages.

    Dots_Divider

I have heard HOW TO LOVE is amazing and I’m so excited it is releasing this week and that I’ll have my electronic copy in hand on Tuesday. It sounds like the perfect type of love story for me to read – complicated, messy and very possibly a little (or a lot) heartbreaking.

I am just so curious as to why Sawyer ends up falling for Reena the first time when he hadn’t noticed her for so long. I’m also super curious as to why he just suddenly left her behind and why he decided to come back.

And, of course, I’m interested in finding out whether she forgives him and lets herself fall back in love with him after he abandoned her the way that he did.

The description promises a story that is “breathtaking” and I cannot to wait to find out if that’s true.

    Description…

Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember: as natural as breathing, as endless as time. But he’s never seemed to notice that Reena even exists…until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. But then Sawyer disappears from their humid Florida town without a word, leaving a devastated—and pregnant—Reena behind.

After: Almost three years have passed, and there’s a new love in Reena’s life: her daughter, Hannah. Reena’s gotten used to being without Sawyer, and she’s finally getting the hang of this strange, unexpected life. But just as swiftly and suddenly as he disappeared, Sawyer turns up again. Reena doesn’t want anything to do with him, though she’d be lying if she said Sawyer’s being back wasn’t stirring something in her. After everything that’s happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again?

In this breathtaking debut, Katie Cotugno weaves together the story of one couple falling in love—twice.

    The Beautiful and the Damned

THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE DAMNED by Jessica Verday will be released in the U.S. on October 1, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Simon Pulse, the print edition is 272 pages.

THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE DAMNED is a spin-off of author Jessica Verday’s The Hollow series.

    Dots_Divider

When I first read the description for THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE DAMNED I knew that I just had to pre-order a copy for my collection. I never expected to be approved for an eARC and while I was approved, I always planned on keeping my pre-order for the finished copy. So I can’t wait for it to download on Monday Midnight.

I have not yet had the chance to meet Cyn and Avian. But I just know that I’m going to love reading their story. And I know that I’m going to love Cyn based upon that line in the description that mentions she casts spells on men for the purpose of stealing their cars.

I can’t wait to go back to Sleepy Hollow to see if they’ll be able to vanquish the source of Cyn’s power. And I can’t wait to find out how she’ll change if she does survive.

While I haven’t had the chance to read this companion novel yet I definitely plan on reading it some time in October. It’s the perfect month to read a book that takes place in the Hollow.

    Description…

Cyn’s blackouts have deadly consequences in this sexy, suspenseful spinoff to the New York Times bestselling Hollow series.

Cyn and Avian are far from a perfect match. She’s a witch who casts spells on men so she can steal their cars. He spends his time being judge, jury, and executioner to the truly evil in the supernatural realm.

When the blackouts Cyn’s been having ever since her time in Sleepy Hollow start escalating, she finds herself unable to remember where she’s been or what she’s been doing. Frightened, she seeks guidance at a local church, and it’s there she meets Avian.

The unlikely pair soon discovers that her blackouts are a side effect of what she truly is—an Echo—a conduit for souls of the dead. The only way to prevent Cyn from losing complete control is to return to Sleepy Hollow and vanquish the source of her power—but she may not survive the process. And if she does? She won’t ever be the same…

    Perfect Ruin

PERFECT RUIN by Lauren DeStefano will be released in the U.S. on October 1, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 368 pages.

PERFECT RUIN is the first book in author Lauren DeStefano’s new series The Internment Chronicles. An eNovella is expected on April 8, 2014 and the second full-length book in the series, currently untitled, is slated for release on February 1, 2015. A third book in the series is also planned.

    Dots_Divider

I am not entirely sure how I missed all the buzz about PERFECT RUIN, but I’m so glad I did not miss adding this book to my pre-orders in August. I think the author is awesome and I cannot wait to read this first book in her new series.

I have not read a single review or checked out this book’s rating on Goodreads. But I read the description and it sounds all sorts of amazing and I seriously cannot wait for my copy to download so I can take a peek… or perhaps dive right in.

I love that this story is set on a floating island in the clouds. I love that for some reason getting close to the edge causes madness. I love that there are secrets that will hopefully be revealed in this first book in the series, though I have a feeling there will be quite a few secrets left for future books.

I desperately want to know what Morgan finds out when she investigates the murder in Internment. And I really, really, really want to know just who she’ll lose.

If I do have any time this week I am going to make it a priority to sneak PERFECT RUIN in. Even the title is intriguing. And I know I will not be able to resist the lure of this book for very long.

    Description…

On Internment, the floating island in the clouds where 16-year-old Morgan Stockhour lives, getting too close to the edge can lead to madness. Even though Morgan’s older brother, Lex, was a Jumper, Morgan vows never to end up like him. She tries her best not to mind that her life is orderly and boring, and if she ever wonders about the ground, and why it is forbidden, she takes solace in best friend Pen and her betrothed, Basil.

Then a murder, the first in a generation, rocks the city. With whispers swirling and fear on the wind, Morgan can no longer stop herself from investigating, especially when she meets Judas. He is the boy being blamed for the murder — betrothed to the victim — but Morgan is convinced of his innocence. Secrets lay at the heart of Internment, but nothing can prepare Morgan for what she will find — or who she will lose.

I have long been a fan of author Kami Garcia so when I discovered that she had a book coming out written by her alone I just had to pre-order it. And UNBREAKABLE sounds wicked cool – and not because the description compared it to Supernatural… well, not just because of the comparison.

But I love stories that have secret societies. I love stories with vengeful demons, even ones where the demon is bad versus bad boy. And I always love stories that have a bit of a mystery.

The description promises all sorts of things I love – suspense, paranormal romance and chilling urban fantasy – and I cannot wait to read it. Though I’ll at least have to wait until my Kindle copy downloads on Tuesday before I do.

    Description…

Supernatural meets The Da Vinci Code in this action-packed paranormal thriller, the first book in a new series from New York Times bestselling author Kami Garcia.

I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Suspense, romance, and the paranormal meet in this chilling urban fantasy, the first book in a new series from Kami Garcia, bestselling coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures novels.

Even though I received an eARC for review I just had to pre-order the finished copy of STIR ME UP for my Kindle. And even if it wasn’t super inexpensive I’d still want to add it to my collection.

I’m reading it right now and so far am loving it. And I hope that by the time this post goes live I’ll have finished reading it and found out what happens with Cami and Julian and with Luke, the boyfriend who seems just the tiniest bit possessive.

I don’t yet know if this story will just be about the romance or whether it will delve a bit deeper with regard to Julian’s injuries. But whether it is a heartfelt and heartbreaking story or just one that’s fun and flirty I can’t wait to finish reading it. Which will definitely happen before its release date if it hasn’t already happened by the time this post is published.

    Description…

Cami Broussard has her future all figured out. She’ll finish her senior year of high school, then go to work full-time as an apprentice chef in her father’s French restaurant, alongside her boyfriend, Luke. But then twenty-year-old ex-Marine Julian Wyatt comes to live with Cami’s family while recovering from serious injuries. And suddenly Cami finds herself questioning everything she thought she wanted.

Julian’s all attitude, challenges and intense green-brown eyes. But beneath that abrasive exterior is a man who just might be as lost as Cami’s starting to feel. And Cami can’t stop thinking about him. Talking to him. Wanting to kiss him. He’s got her seriously stirred up. Her senior year has just gotten a lot more complicated….

    Publisher: Balzer + Bray

    Description:

From award-winning author Stephanie Hemphill comes the fascinating story of Mary Shelley, a brilliant teenager who wrote one of the greatest literary masterpieces of all time: Frankenstein.

    An all-consuming love affair.

A family torn apart by scandal.

A young author on the brink of greatness.

Hideous Love is the fascinating story of Gothic novelist Mary Shelley, who as a teen girl fled her restrictive home only to find herself in the shadow of a brilliant but moody boyfriend, famed poet Percy Shelley. It is the story of the mastermind behind one of the most iconic figures in all of literature: a monster constructed out of dead bodies and brought to life by the tragic Dr. Frankenstein.

Mary wrote Frankenstein at the age of nineteen, but inspiration for the monster came from her life-the atmospheric European settings she visited, the dramas swirling around her, and the stimulating philosophical discussions with the greatest minds of the period, like her close friend, Lord Byron.

This luminous verse novel from award-winning author Stephanie Hemphill reveals how Mary Shelley became one of the most celebrated authors in history.

    Publisher: HarperTeen

Find It: AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE

    Description:

Two teenage zombies search for brains, love, and answers in this surprisingly romantic and laugh-out-loud funny debut novel with guts.

Jake Stephens was always an average, fly-under-the-radar guy. The kind of guy who would never catch the attention of an insanely popular girl like Amanda Blake-or a psychic teenage government agent like Cass. But one day during lunch, Jake’s whole life changed. He and Amanda suddenly locked eyes across the cafeteria, and at the exact same instant, they turned into zombies and devoured half their senior class.

Now Jake definitely has Amanda’s attention-as well as Cass’s, since she’s been sent on a top-secret mission to hunt them down. As Jake and Amanda deal with the existential guilt of eating their best friends, Cass struggles with a growing psychic dilemma of her own-one that will lead the three of them on an epic journey across the country and make them question what it means to truly be alive. Or undead.

Eat, Brains, Love is a heartwarming and bloody blend of romance, deadpan humor, and suspense that fans of Isaac Marion’s Warm Bodies will devour. With its irresistibly dry and authentic teen voice, as well as a zombie apocalypse worthy of AMC’s The Walking Dead, this irreverent paperback original will leave readers dying for the sequel that’s coming in Summer 2014.

More and more, Jonah’s at odds with Gabriel’s tactics and choice of targets. Desperate to help his dying brother Kenzie, Jonah opens doors that Gabriel prefers to keep closed.

Once again it seems that I have eight books pre-ordered, but as I plan on buying ALLURE by Lea Nolan, HEREAFTER by Kate Brian and HIDEOUS LOVE by Stephanie Hemphill, it’s really more like eleven.

While I have read ENDLESS KNIGHT and WILD CARDS and will be finished reading STIR ME UP, there are still a ton of new releases that will be added to the TBR pile in my collection. I wish I could read faster, be less distracted by the various blogs, have more time in the day to read and review books just a bit quicker than I do.

But someday – hopefully soon – I’ll get the chance to read them all. I also hope I didn’t forget any titles like I did last week.

Last week I had an additional book download on Monday Midnight that wasn’t a YA book so I completely missed its release date. It was a total surprise. And that book was…

    Description:

A masterful, twisted tale of ambition, jealousy, betrayal, and superpowers, set in a near-future world.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn’t automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.

This book sounds totally awesome – hence the pre-order – so I hope I’ll be able to find some time to read it, or get the chance to shove a few books off the pile in order to do so, really, really soon.

But I hope that there are a few awesome books releasing this week that end up topping your TBR pile and I hope that if you do read ENDLESS KNIGHT the ending won’t make you as desperate for the next installment in the series as it did me.

    Giveaway: Endless Knight

    Endless Knight

    add

As promised, I am giving away a few copies of ENDLESS KNIGHT by Kresley Cole, a book that totally blew me away when I read it a couple of weeks ago. While I don’t want to go into all of those reasons as I plan on posting my review and because I spotlighted it for my Book Watch post, I can’t just say nothing about this absolutely amazing book in this post.

Because it’s dark and it’s sexy and it’s all sorts of deliciously torturous. Because it left me torn about who I love more. Because the ending destroyed me. Because I can’t get the story, the world, the characters out of my head. Because it has everything I want in a book and so much more.

And because it couldn’t be any more of a “me” book if it tried. It’s abso-freaking-lutely perfect. In every single way.

While I did get to read it early and the finished copy showed up in my mailbox this weekend, I still cannot wait for its release on October 1st so the final version will download to my Kindle and be a part of my permanent collection.

I just knew I was going to love this series when I first read the excerpt of POISON PRINCESS last year. After I read that book I knew the series would be a forever favorite. But after reading ENDLESS KNIGHT it’s officially now an all-time top ten. Yeah, it’s that ridiculously amazing.

In case you haven’t yet seen the excerpt on the series website, I’ll link it again HERE. It is not a scene you will want to miss. Though if you want to be a little more tortured about what happens with Jack after the way things ended in POISON PRINCESS you might want to skip it and discover this particular scene during the course of the read.

Anyway… I’ve gone on long enough. You’re not here to find out what I thought about this amazing book. You’re here to try and win a copy. So I’ll just say – Good luck! And if you’d like to know a little bit more about the two books in this series or its brilliant author, keep reading, below.

Cole lives in Florida with her family and “far too many animals.” She spends any free time traveling and enjoys all things related to boats and water.

    Description…

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole introduces The Arcana Chronicles, post-apocalyptic tales filled with riveting action, the dark mysticism of Tarot cards, and breathtaking romance.

She could save the world—or destroy it.

Sixteen year old Evangeline “Evie” Greene leads a charmed life—until she begins experiencing horrifying hallucinations. When an apocalyptic event decimates her Louisiana hometown, killing everyone she loves, Evie realizes her hallucinations were actually visions of the future—and they’re still happening. Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she must turn to her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate: Jack Deveaux.

But she can’t do either alone.

With his mile-long rap sheet, wicked grin, and bad attitude, Jack is like no boy Evie has ever known. Even though he once scorned her and everything she represented, he agrees to protect Evie on her quest. She knows she can’t totally trust Jack. If he ever cast that wicked grin her way, could she possibly resist him?

    Who can Evie trust?

As Jack and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have gotten the same call. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and Evie is not the only one with special powers. A group of teens has been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. But it’s not always clear who is on which side…
