Character Interview: EARTHQUAKE’s Tavia Michaels + Giveaway

    Character_Interview

I am so excited to be able to share this interview I conducted with Tavia Michaels for the EARTHQUAKE Blog Tour. While my post for the tour changed to a review, I love that I still get to share what Tavia and I talked about last month.

I love, love, LOVE this series and its characters. I’m dying to read the next book, which Tavia hints at in the interview. And for those of you who haven’t yet met her (or those who have, but haven’t yet gotten a chance to read this sequel) I’m offering up a copy of either of the books in this series for giveaway.

If you haven’t read EARTHBOUND you may want to skip this interview and just read the one I conducted with Tavia last year, which is linked in the intro below, as there are some very minor spoilers about a certain character. But if you don’t mind a little tease about what happens in EARTHQUAKE or what is to come in the third book, then you won’t want to miss it.

If I wasn’t already dying to have the next book in hand, I would be now.

Anyway… enough of my rambling. I’ve already gushed about this book, this series and this author. Let me avoid redundancy and stop so that you can check out the interview.

    The Interview

Hi Tavia, I’m so excited to welcome you back to the blog this year and to be able to ask a few questions that I didn’t get the chance to ask when you stopped by last August.

I tried to be somewhat cryptic with my questions in case not everyone who stopped by got the chance to meet you. But I thought that now, after all this time has passed, it might be okay to ask you just a few questions that might require more detailed answers.

     Q&A with Tavia Michaels

    Q. What was it like having discovered you’re an Earthbound and that you have powers to remake the earth?

Blew. My. Mind. I was barely coming to terms with the fact that I was alive and (mostly) functioning. But it’s a strange blend of exciting and devastating because … well, the truth is, a lot of people are dead because of what I am. I hope I can make up for that.

    Q. Knowing how complicated your life has been and continues to be, do you ever just wish you were normal? And if so, what would your ideal “normal” be?

Yes and no. It’s incredibly stressful and full of pressure to be who I am. But if I weren’t, well, the entire world would be doomed. I’m glad that someone is what I am, but the truth is, I’d rather it wasn’t me.

Normal? Wow. What is normal? Normal is Michigan. Life before the plane crash. And certainly before this whole Earthbound mess. But I guess normal also means ignorant of my true nature. And it’s hard to wish for that. Even if it would be wonderful.

    Q. If you could go back and change anything about your situation, about yourself, or about what happened with Benson or with Logan, would you? And what would you change and why?

I’m big on truth and knowledge. And that’s the one thing I wish I could change. I met both Logan (Quinn) and Benson and under completely false pretenses. I didn’t actually know who or what either of them was in the beginning. And while I’m glad I know the truth now, I wish I could have known from the beginning.

    Q. What is your favorite memory of Logan – past or present – and why is it a favorite?

The memory that I have of Logan simply coming home to our cabin one day—the one that I saw right when I realized who I was, or used to be—that’s described in the first book is my favorite memory. Partly because it was sweet and romantic, but also because it’s such a clear memory. And so few of my memories are. I like it so much I kind of play with it in the next book. 🙂

    Q. I’ve heard that we get to learn a little bit more about both the Curatoria and the Reduciata. Without revealing too much, is there anything you can say about both factions? Is there more than meets the eye with both? Is there one you feel like you can trust more than the other?

Even though the words came from Quinn’s diary, I feel like they’re my opinion—both now and in my past—as well. “Trust ye the Curatoria but tenuously, and the Reduciata not at all.” I think of the Curatoria as the lesser of two evils, but if Sammi and Mark didn’t trust them, I certainly don’t either.

Readers will learn a lot about both brotherhoods in this next book. And just like me, I’m not sure they’re going to like what they discover.

    Q. What has it been like being around Logan without him having any idea of who you are or having any memories of your past? And is he any different from the boy you used to know?

It’s torturous!! I expected this to be easy, and it has been anything but. It would actually be fun to slowly explore each other and start a brand-new relationship and not worry too much about when the memories came back. But I don’t have the luxury of time. Every minute that passes our lives are in even greater danger. And that’s without taking into consideration how heart-breaking it is.

    Q. Is there anyone new we get to meet that we should keep an eye out for? If so, who are they and why should we look for them?

In this next book you’re going to see Earthbound using their abilities in ways I never even considered. Helping humanity and working to redeem themselves from their curse. Secretly, of course. Keep a particular eye out for Audra. And watch out for Alanna.

    Q. In fifteen words or less, can you give us a hint as to what we can expect from this next chapter in your life?

Huge discoveries, secrets revealed, disaster is imminent, and it’s all up to me.

Tavia Michaels is the sole survivor of the plane crash that killed her parents. When she starts to see strange visions of a boy she’s never spoken with in real life, she begins to suspect that there’s much about her past that she isn’t being told.

Tavia immediately searches for answers, desperate to determine why she feels so drawn to a boy she hardly knows. But when Tavia discovers that the aunt and uncle who took her in after her parents’ death may have actually been responsible for the plane crash that killed them–and that she may have been the true intended victim–she flees for the safety of Camden, Maine, where the boy she sees in her visions instructs her to go.

Now, Tavia is on the run with no one to trust. No one, that is, except for her best friend and longtime crush, Benson.

Tavia feels torn between the boy who mysteriously comes to her at night and the boy who has been by her side every step of the way. But what Tavia doesn’t know is that the world is literally falling apart and that to save it she will have to unite with the boy in her visions. Only problem? To do so would mean rejecting Benson’s love. And that’s the one thing Tavia Michaels swore she’d never do.

EARTHQUAKE Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

    Earthquake_Tour_Banner

I am super excited to be today’s stop on the EARTHQUAKE Blog Tour hosted by Book Nerd Tours. I love this series by the author and I’m already dying to read the next installment to find out what did happen and what’s going to happen.

If you haven’t yet met Tavia Michaels, or discovered what it means to be an Earthbound, now’s the perfect time to do so. With EARTHQUAKE’s release last week you’ll be able to read the first two books in this series back-to-back and with plenty of time to get caught up before the next book in the series releases.

While I’d normally ramble and gush and tease about the book here, as my stop is now a review stop, I’ll leave my rambling to the review part of this post. But if you’d like to know just a little bit more about both books in the series, there’s some information and places to find them online below.

I also just had to add in a giveaway for this seriously fantastic second book in the series. Just scroll down to the Rafflecopter for a chance to win.

After reading the author’s Wings series I didn’t think I could love anything she wrote more. I was wrong. This series is awesome.

    The Review

Aprilynne Pike’s EARTHQUAKE is an incredibly exciting, nail-biting, suspenseful and action-filled second book in the Earthbound series. It takes readers back to a world that is even darker and deadlier than the one they left at the end of book one. The mystery goes even deeper, there are even more twists and turns, and with nearly everyone’s motives suspect, it makes for an unputdownable read.

With only a few memories of her past lives, Tavia Michaels doesn’t feel like the goddess she once was and is supposed to be. She feels more like a human than an Earthbound. She doesn’t remember what her abilities are. She doesn’t remember what secrets she is keeping. She doesn’t remember who she can trust and who she shouldn’t. She doesn’t remember what it is like to love someone eternally.

But if she is as powerful as everyone thinks she is, then she has to try and stop the deadly virus that is threatening to destroy the world and everyone in it. Even if it means working with the Curatoria to develop a vaccine. Even if it means temporarily putting her trust in those she’s not sure she should trust. Even if it means waiting to try and recover more of her missing memories. And even if it means having her heart torn between the boy she has loved forever and the one she loves in this life.

In this second book in the series, Aprilynne Pike ratchets up the excitement with a deadly threat, a ticking clock, a number of suspicious characters, peeks into Tavia’s past lives, a love triangle and a jaw-dropping, climactic conclusion, keeping readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The story is full of shocks and surprises, tension, angst and heartache. And with the change in setting, the author is able to reveal more about the Earthbound – about who they are and what they’re capable of – and more about Tavia – about who she is, who she was, and what she’s willing to become.

The story is riveting, the mythology is original, the mystery will keep everyone guessing, the main character is likable and easy to connect with, the love story will make it tough to choose a side and the ending is killer, making EARTHQUAKE a definite must-read sequel.

    The Rating

    05

    On a personal note…

I loved the first book in this series. It was fascinating and different and romantic and heartbreaking. I loved it so much that I was worried that this second book in the series would suffer from sophomore slump. But I should have known, given how much I love this author’s writing and stories, that something like that would never happen.

EARTHQUAKE is an amazing follow-up to EARTHBOUND. It had everything that I loved about the first book in the series and then some. It was action-packed. It kept me on edge, wondering whether every new character I met had some ulterior motive. It tortured me in the very best of ways with the love triangle between Tavia, Logan and Benson. It made me anxious wondering just when the next devastating thing was going to happen.

It’s a book I never wanted to put down. It immediately grabbed hold. It made me question, it made me hope, it made me want to know more, it made me fall madly in love with it, right from the start. It surprised me, when I didn’t think I could be surprised. It stumped me – I love not being able to solve the puzzle a story presents instantly.

I adored Tavia, even if I didn’t always agree with everything she did. She was brave and determined and kind and broken and had some seriously awesome powers. I loved the love triangle, even when it didn’t look like the boy whose side I chose would be the one Tavia chose.

EARTHQUAKE was so easy to just dive right into. I loved that it picked up very shortly after the events in EARTHBOUND, not missing a beat. I loved that the pace sped up in this sequel. I loved every single thing about it… well, except for the fact that it had to end and that I have to wait for a year until the next book in the series releases.

    Favorite passage…

There are so many awesome passages in this book that I call favorites. But the one I included below is my most favorite non-spoiler-y one. And to keep it from being in any way spoiler-y I’m leaving out the attribution.

So, in order to find out which boy said this to Tavia, you’ll have to read the book. Because my lips are sealed.

“I’ll wait forever. Because what we have, it’s worth it. It’s worth anything.” Abruptly he pushes to his feet, and the space in front of my face feels more than empty. And in a fierce voice he says, “And I’ll fight to get it back.”

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #135

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of July 30th-August 5th that I have pre-ordered.

    05

    Indelible

    addtogoodreads

INDELIBLE by Dawn Metcalf will be released in the U.S. on July 30, 2013 in paperback, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order in all formats at AMAZON and in paperback and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin Teen, the print edition is 384 pages.

INDELIBLE is the first book in author Dawn Metcalf’s The Twixt series. No information is yet available about the sequel.

    Line_001

I am so excited that INDELIBLE is releasing this week and that everyone will get a chance to meet Joy and Ink and the rest of more than interesting characters, like Graus Claude, that author Dawn Metcalf introduced in this first book in the series.

I thought this story was magical and quite a bit different from what I imagined, which was a lovely surprise. So I’m totally stoked it will be downloading to my Kindle on Tuesday and I can include it as part of my permanent collection.

As I’m hoping to have my review posted some time this week, I won’t go on and on for too long here. But I will just say that this was such a fun and quick read and I hope to learn more about what the sequel entails as I definitely plan on continuing this series.

I am also hopeful that things between Joy and Ink… well… I probably shouldn’t say… but as things left off in a way that left me anxious for more, I wish I had those answers sooner rather than later.

As I have read INDELIBLE, I won’t be reading it again this week. But I will definitely be re-reading this story before the sequel comes out.

    Earthbound

    addtogoodreads

EARTHBOUND by Aprilynne Pike will be released in the U.S. on July 30, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Razorbill, the print edition is 352 pages.

EARTHBOUND is the first book in a new series of the same name by author Aprilynne Pike. No information is yet available about the sequel.

    Line_001

I absolutely loved EARTHBOUND and cannot wait until it resides on my Kindle tomorrow. Because that means that it’s one more day closer to the release of the as yet unnamed sequel. While the ending is not a cliffhanger, it very much leaves off in a place that has me desperate to find out what happens next. And I cannot wait for whatever that may be.

As I have read this book, I can’t pretend to guess at what happened with Tavia, or feign ignorance about what the visions mean. I can’t unknow what happens between her and this mystery boy or what happens with Benson.

This was such an exciting read, and the start of a series I know will be every bit as amazing, if not more so, than the author’s Wings series. It was a book I’ve been pining for since I first heard of its existence and is a book I definitely plan on re-reading. So I cannot wait to add it to my collection when it downloads to my Kindle.

    Soul Screamers Volume Three

    addtogoodreads

SOUL SCREAMERS VOLUME THREE by Rachel Vincent will be released in the U.S. on July 30, 2013 in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin Teen, the print edition is 768 pages.

SOUL SCREAMERS VOLUME THREE contains the novels IF I DIE and BEFORE I WAKE and the novella NEVER TO SLEEP.

    Line_001

I’ve already read and devoured the Soul Screamers books. But I am so unbelievably excited that SOUL SCREAMERS VOLUME THREE is releasing tomorrow and that my print copy will be delivered on release day.

I can’t wait to see what it looks like on my book tower next to the two previously released volumes I own. Both those books are absolutely gorgeous and this one looks to be no less stunning. So I’m super stoked that it will finally be added to my collection. I miss this series.

As I have read and reviewed, or rambled about, all the stories in this book, and I spotlighted VOLUME THREE for my Book Watch post the other week, I won’t go on and on about just how amazing this particular volume is. But with IF I DIE, one of my most favorite books not only in the series but for all time, and BEFORE I WAKE, a book that brought me to almost as many tears, included in this volume, this is most definitely my favorite volume yet.

And while I won’t be diving into SOUL SCREAMERS VOLUME THREE this week, I am planning to re-read the series in its entirety over the course of a long weekend at some point this summer. Though I will likely read the Kindle eBook download of this volume that I also have pre-ordered this week.

I don’t have many books pre-ordered this week. At least none that I’m aware of, aside from the three mentioned above. But I am totally ecstatic for each of the books I have on order as they are all amazing.

And while I don’t have any plans – yet – to purchase any of the books of note I’ve listed in this post, there are some titles that have caught my eye that I just might end up adding to my collection when I get the chance to take a longer look at them.

But for now I’m stoked that I technically don’t have any new books to add to the TBR pile. Even though I plan on re-reading each of the books I’ve pre-ordered, they’re technically not TBR books. Which makes me less stressed about my reading pile.

I hope that you found some gems amongst the new releases this week. And I hope that your reading pile won’t be too overburdened with all the new adds. If you have a bookish “must buy” recommendation, I’d love to know.

Until next week, happy book collecting!

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

    My Reading Pile #120

I did not expect to receive a book in the mail this week so I was totally surprise when one showed up on my doorstep on Thursday.

I wasn’t even planning on checking the mail at all until Jaime of Two Chicks on Books told me to because she sent me some awesome swag, a signed extra content booklet from Elizabeth Norris’ UNBREAKABLE and a tote bag.

But aside from that I don’t think that any books are waiting for me, because I have no trades in the works and I don’t have any requests out for new books.

The book that was waiting for me outside my door was an ARC of FLICKER & BURN (Cold Fury #2) by T.M. Goeglein thanks to the folks at Putnam Juvenile. I am super excited to read this book, though I had been fortunate enough to receive a copy a couple of months back.

I also received an eARC of CONSUME (The Clann #3) by Melissa Darnell for the upcoming blog tour for the book. I’d requested it on NetGalley but received the ARC for the tour before my request was approved or denied. And I can’t wait to see what happens in this third book in the series with Tristan and Savannah. I have no idea if it’s the final book in the series but I’m dying to check it out.

Though it won’t be this week, as I have a couple other books ahead of it that I can’t wait to read. So….

Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.

    Earthbound

    addtogoodreads

First up on the pile is EARTHBOUND by Aprilynne Pike. I received an ARC for review from Razorbill and I’ve been staring at it, desperately wishing I could get it on the pile. Well, the wait is finally over because I can’t resist any longer.

I love Aprilynne Pike’s writing and after hearing this book is an awesome read I just have to find out for myself. I want to meet Tavia and learn what being an Earthbound entails. I want to see what she does with her abilities. And I’m super curious about her visions of a boy she’s never spoken to before.

The description mentions “love” and “fate” and a choice that has to be made. Add to that an evil society intent on manipulating global events and I am even more excited to dive into this new series.

If it’s anywhere close to as amazing as her Wings series was, I will be a very, very happy reader.

    Replica

    addtogoodreads

Next up on the pile is REPLICA by Jenna Black. I received an ARC through a trade because I didn’t want to have to wait for its release. This book sounds ahhhh-mazing and even though I have a few review books I should be reading, I couldn’t wait another week to get this on the pile.

As I’ve already spoken about this book just yesterday in my Book Watch post, I won’t rehash the same things I talked about in that post. So I’ll talk instead about how this cover alone makes me want to dive in right now, the fact that the description calls it “breathtaking” makes me want to have mine taken, and that I’m really curious as to whether Nate’s replica is the same “notorious playboy” that he was.

Even with the holiday week this week and an uncertain amount of time on the schedule for reading, there is no way that I won’t devour REPLICA before the week’s end.

    Wishful Thinking Reads:

While I have a ton of books I wish I could be reading, I don’t have a wishful thinking read this week because the books I wish I could read are ones I don’t currently have. Books like ENDLESS KNIGHT, INDEPENDENT STUDY, CRASH INTO YOU.

So I think I’ll just have to stick with last week’s wish to read PROXY by Alex London. Because that is definitely a book I wish I could squeeze in this week. And maybe, just maybe, I will.

    Those Left Behind:

I went a little bit off pile this past week and ended up reading PUSHING THE LIMITS, CROSSING THE LINE and DARE YOU TO. But I also managed to finish my re-read of ASHES ON THE WAVES and I am currently reading DEFIANCE which I will definitely finish before it’s time to start this week’s pile on Sunday.

Of course I didn’t get caught up on reviews and didn’t get a chance to review all of this week’s reads – I still need to try and write my review for ASHES ON THE WAVES and I need to edit and proofread my review for DARE YOU TO.

But I also still need to review THE TESTING, INDELIBLE and IF I SHOULD DIE and maybe just maybe finish and post that review for GODDESS. But with the two books I have on the pile this week, I don’t know if I’ll find the time to do so. Though I am, as always, ever hopeful.

Anyway… as bummed as I am about not getting caught up on all my reviews I am happy that at least I’ve had a few more reviews on the blog and a few less promotional posts these past couple of weeks.

I hope that will continue throughout the summer. But only time will tell….

    NetGalley Pile Adds & Finds:

I put in one request on NetGalley this week, but I am still awaiting approval or denial. Of course I’m hoping for an approval but I am not holding my breath. Because the book looks awesome and I’m sure everyone requested it. And it is….

    The Waking Dark

THE WAKING DARK by Robin Wasserman (Random House Children’s, Sep 10 2013)

    ***

But that was my only request this week. Though I did see a couple other books that looked interesting…

GOODBYE, REBEL BLUE by Shelley Coriell (ABRAMS, Oct 1 2013)

SILENCE OF THE WOLVES by Hannah Pole (Harlequin UK Limited, Jun 26 2013) **Not YA**

    Div01

I’m not sure how I found time to read three-and-a-half full-length books and one novella this past week. I even managed to review said novella and one of the novels. It wasn’t a quiet week at work and I did manage to get some sleep, so I’m not sure. I’m guessing there wasn’t much on the telly.

It’s more likely that the books were just that good.

Chances are I’ll be able to read more than the two books I have listed above. Actually I’m counting on it because I have a SECRET book I’ll be reading on Monday. But if I’m smart – not saying that I am – I’ll spend some of the time writing reviews. Because falling behind on reviews makes it that much harder to write them.

I don’t expect much to happen on the blog this week, given the holiday. I will be offline for a couple of the days and I don’t have any tours scheduled, so I’m hoping it will be a nice quiet week to post reviews. Fingers are most definitely crossed for all of that.

And I still really, really want to read WILD CARDS this week, so hopefully I’ll be able to find some time in the early a.m. later this week to do so.

I know for certain, though, that I won’t be going off pile, even though there are a few other books I’d love to read. Because the two books I have on pile this week are ones I’ve been desperate to read for a long, long, long time.

    Anyway…

If you are in the U.S. and have the holiday to celebrate, I hope you’re able to spend some of that time off with an amazing book in hand. And for those that don’t celebrate this particular day in your country’s history, I still wish you a terrific bookish week ahead.

And if you are hanging out near a computer and want to share your thoughts about the books you’re planning on checking out, just leave a comment. I’d love to know!
