    Formats: Hardcover, eBook

    Description…

For fans of Cassandra Clare and Richelle Mead comes the unputdownable sequel to The Stars Never Rise, a book Rachel Caine, author of the bestselling Morganville Vampires series, called “haunting, unsettling, and eerily beautiful.”

ONE SPARK WILL RISE. Nina Kane was born to be an exorcist. And since uncovering the horrifying truth—that the war against demons is far from over—seventeen-year-old Nina and her pregnant younger sister, Mellie, have been on the run, incinerating the remains of the demon horde as they go.

In the badlands, Nina, Mellie, and Finn, the fugitive and rogue exorcist who saved her life, find allies in a group of freedom fighters. They also face a new threat: Pandemonia, a city full of demons. But this fresh new hell is the least of Nina’s worries. The well of souls ran dry more than a century ago, drained by the demons secretly living among humans, and without a donor soul, Mellie’s child will die within hours of its birth.
Nina isn’t about to let that happen . . . even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

    Description…

Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she’s too busy trying to actually survive. Her town’s population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she’ll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie’s sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can’t survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

AND I DARKEN Blog Tour: Q&A with Kiersten White

    And I Darken Banner

First off, HAPPY RELEASE DAY to AND I DARKEN!

I cannot believe it is finally out and I can grab a finished copy and begin counting down the days until the second book in the series releases. If you haven’t pre-ordered your copy of this epic and amazing book, you should seriously press pause on reading this post and run out and buy a copy and START READING – you won’t put it down!

I read AND I DARKEN ages ago, when I first got my hands on a copy, and even though nearly three months have passed, the characters and story are still fresh in my mind, I am even more anxious to find out what is next for Lada and Radu and Mehmed, and I still can’t believe how much I actually grew to like Lada.

Although I’m a bit more surprised that the author actually got me to like Vlad the Impaler just a little bit less than I once had.

This story has so much epicness, and bloodshed, and kick-a** characters. There are journeys. There is betrayal. There is even unrequited love.

So be sure to dive into this first book in the series NOW so that you can suffer the wait for the sequel like I am. You won’t regret it.

And if you’d like to know a little bit more about the book, check out the description and trailer below.

Author Kiersten White also answers a few questions about AND I DARKEN and shares her favorite historical villains. So scroll down to the interview following the bookish details.

    And…

There is still time to follow the tour. The schedule is below, and is (and will be) updated with direct links to each of the stops. So click to visit the posts you most want to read to learn more about this incredible new book and series by Kiersten White.

    Description…

NO ONE EXPECTS A PRINCESS TO BE BRUTAL.

And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets.

Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, who’s expected to rule a nation, Radu feels that he’s made a true friend—and Lada wonders if she’s finally found someone worthy of her passion.

But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against—and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point.

    The Interview

    Q&A with Kiersten White

    Q. How would you describe Lada Dragwyla in fifteen words or less?

Ruthless, brutal, and incapable of doing what is easy instead of what she wants.

    Q. Who are your top five favorite historical “villains,” female or male?

    1. Vlad the Impaler, obviously. He took whatever advantage he could, he engaged in scorched-earth warfare, and he spat in the face of the most powerful empire of his time. He might not have been a great prince (or person) in the end, but you have to admire his tenacity and brilliance.
    2. This is awful, but I find Elizabeth Báthory, the most notorious female serial killer in history, deeply fascinating. Obviously she is repulsive, but so bizarre she’s compelling.
    3. In the same vein, I love reading about Lizzie Borden. Did she actually do it? And if so, did she, as rumored, get away with it because men were so squeamish about women’s issues that they took her story that the blood was from her period at face value? AWFUL, but also kind of awesome.
    4. This one is not a serial killer! Mostly. I adore the dynamic duo of Anne Bonny and Mary Read. After failed marriages, both of them took to the sea as pirates. Anne was said to bare her breasts during combat as a way of throwing her enemies off-balance. When they were eventually caught, Anne said to her captain (and lover) as he was hanged, “Sorry to see you there, but if you’d fought like a man, you would not have been hang’d like a dog.” They were both spared execution on account of being pregnant, once again using their womanhood to their advantage!
    5. And last but not least, another pirate, though a far more successful one. Ching Shih took over her dead husband’s fleet and became so powerful that she essentially had her own government, ruling over 1,800 ships and 80,000 sailors! Eventually she was able to peacefully retire. If that isn’t being an amazing villain, I don’t know what is.

    Q. If you could be any character in AND I DARKEN, who would you choose to be, and why?

Oh man, this is a tough one. Turns out I’m pretty brutal to my characters. I guess we know where Lada gets that particular trait! But I’d probably choose Nazira. Nazira knows who she is, she’s found true love, and she’s sweet and loyal but also incredibly clever (as we discover more of in book two!).

    Q. What was your favorite scene and what was your most challenging scene to write in AND I DARKEN, and why?

There is a scene where Lada, Radu, and Mehmed sneak out in the middle of the night to watch a meteor shower. It was funny, it was tender, and it gave us some unexpected insight into Lada. But when my editor read the first draft, she flagged it for potential trimming. In a book as long as And I Darken, every scene has to justify its inclusion. Normally I’m happy to cut—so much easier than adding!—but the idea of losing this scene really hurt. After a lot of brainstorming and tweaking and shifting, I was able to address my editor’s (valid) concern that it didn’t move the plot forward, while still keeping everything I loved. I’m very proud of that scene now!

    Q. If you could give one piece of advice to Lada, what would it be? And do you think she would make you pay dearly for giving it?

This is such a great question. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized Lada would never take any advice I could give. She would do everything in her power to achieve the same result her own way, rather than bowing to what I thought was best. It makes her exhilarating—and exhausting!—to write.

A TOTALLY AWKWARD LOVE STORY Blog Tour: ‘Top Five Awkward Dating Moments, Misunderstandings, or Mishaps’ Guest Post + Giveaway

    A-Totally-Awkward-Love-Story-BT

I am totally stoked to be today’s stop on the A TOTALLY AWKWARD LOVE STORY Blog Tour. I have an hysterically funny guest post by the authors for my stop, as well as a giveaway for a copy of the book, which releases on May 3rd.TOM & LUCY PHOTOBOOTH-1

If you haven’t added A TOTALLY AWKWARD LOVE STORY to your TBR pile, now’s the perfect time… Have you done it yet? I can wait…

Hannah and Sam’s story is so much fun (I laughed so hard there were tears), incredibly awkward at times (the title is not at all misleading), and there are moments that will have you cringing for each of them. It is a super fast read, one you’ll definitely want to read again, with characters you’ll hope get their happily ever after.

So be sure to add this one to your spring/summer reading lists. But be advised there will be several laugh-out-loud instances – so avoid the late night read next to a sleeping loved one, a public transportation read that will make you look quite mad, or a library read that will get you booted.

Details about A TOTALLY AWKWARD LOVE STORY and its authors are below, along with Lucy Ivison and Tom Ellen’s top five awkward dating moments. And you can enter the giveaway for a copy of the book in the Rafflecopter form.

Also, be sure to visit each of the stops on the tour. I’ll be updating the schedule at the bottom of the post with direct links and details for each stop.

    Description…

For fans of The DUFF, this hilarious and true-to-teen romance is Broad City meets Judy Blume.

The summer before college, Hannah swears she’s finally going to find The One. And for five perfect minutes, Hannah does find him. He’s cute and makes her laugh like crazy. She just wishes she’d caught his name, because Toilet Boy Cinderella really lacks sex appeal.

For Sam, the summer is off to a bad start for a million reasons. But for five minutes his luck changes: in a fancy restroom painted purple like it belongs in a Bond villain hideaway, Sam falls head over heels for some strange and hilarious girl. Of course, he doesn’t know her name. With his luck, he’ll never see her again, and he’ll remain a girlfriendless, moony-eyed virgin. Forever.

But another chance meeting brings them together, only to have a chance misunderstanding drive them apart . . . and then the cycle starts all over again. Madcap mishaps, raunchy hilarity, and deep romance follow these two wherever they go. For two people so clearly destined for each other, they sure have a hell of a lot of trouble even getting together.

    The Guest Post

Top five awkward dating moments, misunderstandings, or mishaps

by Lucy Ivison and Tom Ellen

    1Lucy

This isn’t really a dating story involving me. Well, it does involve me, but I don’t have a starring role. I don’t think English people go on dates that much, really. I think we are new to the dating thing, which we have only adopted in a halfhearted manner since rom-coms arrived at the cinema. Anyway . . . I wanted to get off with a boy at a party once when I was nineteen. That is the British way of dating. When I got there, although I used my best tactics like dancing in sexy manner to Wham! on the patio, he didn’t seem very fussed and went to another party. Taking it in my stride, I had a few drinks and carried on dancing to Wham! But then I got tired . . . so I wandered off and found a bedroom and fell asleep. I woke up to my best friend, Calypso*, having sex with the boy she had a crush on and had gone to the party hoping to get with. She hadn’t realised I was there because I had burrowed myself into the duvet like a hibernating badger. I was too polite to move. It was awkward. (*Calypso is not her real name.)

    2Tom

I once asked a girl out in a bar, only to discover that her first name was the same as my surname (Ellen). I was slightly thrown by this at the time, but I was so pleased that she’d given me her number that I didn’t mention it. Then, by about the third date, I thought I had to finally break the news to her that if we ever got married her name would be Ellen Ellen. She found it quite funny, but when we eventually broke up a couple of months later, she did say, “Well, we were never going to get married, were we?” So I’ll always wonder what would have happened if I had a slightly less feminine last name. . . . Interesting side note: I also briefly dated a girl called Selin not long after this incident, so that was another relationship doomed to failure by my ridiculous surname.

    3Lucy

Tom and I broke up the summer of my second year at university. I had only really ever been out with Tom. Anyway, my friend set me up on a date with someone who was generally considered to be a hottie. We went to see the first Pirates of the Caribbean film—so far, so first date-y. A random thing you also need to know is that it was this super, super hot summer. I am a self-respecting British woman, so obviously never leave the house without seventeen cardigans, but this one time because it was so hot I went out wearing only my carefully selected, brand-new lemon yellow Topshop sundress. At the end of the movie I deliberately raced ahead of everyone else to get to the loo. And then caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and realised I had my period ALL OVER the back of my yellow lemon special. Like I had been shot in the back. I phoned my friend who was on holiday in Majorca, who said quite rationally that she couldn’t really do anything to help, as she was on holiday in Majorca. And then I had to do a period walk of shame back out of the loo and to the boy. We did not go for dinner as planned.

    4Tom

I went into a pub a while back, and spotted a guy I used to go to school with. He was at a table with a girl, and from their slightly awkward body language it was clear they were on a first date. I went over to say hello, and the guy said, “Hi, Tom, this is Sarah. Sarah, this is Tom.” And the girl said: “It’s Katie.” There followed an extremely awkward silence, and I quickly made my excuses and left them to what remained of their intensely uncomfortable evening. They left pretty soon afterward, and I don’t imagine they’ve seen each other since. . . .

    5Lucy

I once snuck into a boy’s house at one in the morning. His parents obviously had no idea I was there. Which was all well and good until I suddenly said, “I feel a bit unwell,” and tiptoed across the hall as quietly as possible before locking the bathroom door and proceeding to be extremely loudly and violently sick. For ages. And ages. Until his mother knocked on the door and said, “Marmaduke*, are you okay?” And I had to open the door and reveal it was not her son but a totally random girl puking all over her house. She had to hold my hair and call my parents. (*Marmaduke is not his real name.)

    Title: BURNING MIDNIGHT
    Author: Will McIntosh
    Release date: February 2, 2016
    Publisher: Delacorte Press
    Pages: 320
    Formats: Hardcover, paperback, audio, eBook

    Description…

For fans of The Maze Runner and The Fifth Wave, this debut YA novel from Hugo Award winner Will McIntosh pits four underprivileged teens against an evil billionaire in the race of a lifetime.

Sully is a sphere dealer at a flea market. It doesn’t pay much—Alex Holliday’s stores have muscled out most of the independent sellers—but it helps him and his mom make the rent.

No one knows where the brilliant-colored spheres came from. One day they were just there, hidden all over the earth like huge gemstones. Burn a pair and they make you a little better: an inch taller, skilled at math, better-looking. The rarer the sphere, the greater the improvement—and the more expensive the sphere.

When Sully meets Hunter, a girl with a natural talent for finding spheres, the two start searching together. One day they find a Gold—a color no one has ever seen. And when Alex Holliday learns what they have, he will go to any lengths, will use all of his wealth and power, to take it from them.

There’s no question the Gold is priceless, but what does it actually do? None of them is aware of it yet, but the fate of the world rests on this little golden orb. Because all the world fights over the spheres, but no one knows where they come from, what their powers are, or why they’re here.

Note: This review is based on an eARC received from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    The Review

BURNING MIDNIGHT starts with an interesting concept: If you could use an unknown object to make yourself smarter, stronger, faster, better looking, etc. would you? It imagines a world where these objects, spheres, are a big business for those that can find them and sell them. It introduces characters Sully and Hunter, a sphere broker and sphere hunter who are hoping to make a big find to change their situations for the better. It pits them against a man who is ruthless, deceitful, greedy, and enhanced by the spheres. And it adds in a number of daring searches, a few unexpected twists, a road trip, a chase, a theft or two, thrills, danger, disaster.

David Sullivan is desperate to find a way to earn enough money to help his mom get by. With the number of rare spheres dwindling, he isn’t sure how long he’ll be able to keep them in their home. He isn’t a hunter, but if teaming up with one will help him locate a rare sphere, he’d be willing to do whatever is necessary. Even if their odds are slim. Even with the risk that he could get burned by his partner. And even if it means having to use a couple of spheres to help him.

He doesn’t expect it to be easy. Especially with Alex Holliday, the man who cheated him out of millions, watching his every move. But he never anticipated what it might mean to once again find a never-before-seen sphere – the decisions he’d have to make, the actions he’d have to take, the consequences he’d have to face, and the things he might end up losing.

Will McIntosh penned a story that is as exciting as it is thought-provoking. He sets his characters off on a number of danger-filled adventures in search of elusive and valuable spheres. He creates some rather challenging and unusual obstacles for them to overcome. And he puts them on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.

The question he poses about using the spheres for enhancement is as hotly debated in his characters’ world as performance-enhancing, age-defying, brain-boosting drugs are in ours. And while it turns out the risks are likely quite different, it does make you wonder if the pharmaceuticals’ benefits are worth any risk at all.

BURNING MIDNIGHT is a quick and engaging read with a pace that continues to pick up as the story progresses. It is different and surprising and strange and clever and a whole lot of fun.

    Description

David Almond, recipient of the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award, a Printz Honor for Skellig, and the Printz Award for Kit’s Wilderness, has crafted an enchanting modern take on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.

Written in lyrical prose, this novel for fans of epic romances and mythology retellings explores themes of love, loss, fate, and destiny set against the dramatic and diverse backdrop of Northern England.

Claire and Ella and their friends are bound by ties so strong they seem unbreakable. Then the strange and handsome Orpheus strolls onto the beach, and he sings them all into an astonishing new understanding of themselves. Ella is caught the hardest, fastest, deepest—and Claire is left with the pain of looking on.

Raw, emotional, lyrical, funny, and true, A Song for Ella Grey is a tale of the joys, troubles, and desires of modern teens. It takes place in the ordinary streets of Tyneside and on the beautiful beaches of Northumberland. It’s a story of first love, a love song that draws on ancient mythical forces. A love that leads Ella, Orpheus, and Claire to the gates of Death and beyond.

    The Review

A SONG FOR ELLA GREY is an achingly beautiful and haunting story. The writing is exquisite. The words are poetry. The love story is fragile and tender and heartbreaking. It is mesmerizing. It is breathtaking. It is so very, very tragic. And so very, very sad.

This modern retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice has a lovely, ethereal quality to it. While set in the present, the story and characters feel timeless. Experiencing Orpheus and Ella’s love story through Ella’s friend Claire Wilkinson’s eyes makes it feel that much more illusory, dreamy, faraway.

The inevitability of their fate, the cruelty of their destiny, fills each moment of this story with melancholy. But the author’s words, and the way they flow, infuse this story with lightness and beauty.

Orpheus and Ella are not your typical teens in love. Their love is instant and eternal and so much bigger than the both of them, even though their time together is incredibly brief. Ella is willing to accept Orpheus for the wandering, free-spirit he is and share him with the world. And Orpheus is willing to go to hell and back, almost literally, for Ella. They are perfectly matched, which makes what happens to both of them all the more heartrending.

David Almond has penned a story that is powerful, yet delicate, emotional, surprising, wonderful. His writing is refreshingly different, captivating, fascinating, consuming. His narrator is likable and interesting and unusual and sympathetic.

Poor Claire. Poor Orpheus. Poor, poor Ella. Their lives became so intertwined and because of that those who remained were left more than a little bit broken.

A SONG FOR ELLA GREY is a story that will make you unravel piece by piece until you’ve come completely undone. You’ll mourn the loss of these characters. You’ll ache for Claire and all she’s going through for playing a part in sealing their fate. You’ll want to read this again and again just to know these characters once more and to read those words that will intrigue you, ensnare you, transport you.

It is unique. It is spellbinding. It is a poignant and absolutely brilliant retelling of this tragic tale. And it is perfect for those who are looking for something memorable, incredible, extraordinary.
