However, when a new threat to Damian and his kingdom emerges, and blame is cast on the once friendly nation of Blevon, Alexa knows things are not what they seem. Once again the fate of her country hangs in the balance. Will Alexa be able to protect her king and uncover the true enemy — before it’s too late?

    REVIEW

Sara B. Larson’s IGNITE is an absolutely riveting second installment in the series. Hidden agendas, unknown enemies, unidentifiable threats, and a tension-filled love story make for an incredibly suspenseful and unputdownable read. It’s a story that will keep readers guessing, make them race through the pages in search for answers, and will have them wishing for the third book in the series to discover what happens next.

Putting the best interests of her country and her King before her own, Alexa must fight to hide her feelings and her broken heart so that she can remain the King’s most trusted guard. But it isn’t easy. Not when just being near him makes her heart leap into her throat.

So when a beautiful woman is sent to deliver a message to King Damian, Alexa can’t be sure if her distrust for this woman is based on instinct or because she might be someone who could replace Alexa in his heart. And if she can no longer trust herself, maybe she isn’t the best person to protect her King from the growing dangers to him and to Antion. And maybe, had she known the true cost of her decision, she might have made a different one.

IGNITE continues the story only a short time following the events in DEFY. And while things may have settled down for the kingdom of Antion and its new ruler, the calm is short-lived. With an ally ostensibly now an enemy, the hope to rebuild will have to be set aside as their attention must turn to this new menace.

Action-filled, gripping and nerve-wracking, the story, the pace, the excitement do not let up. Tension continues to mount as Alexa tries to uncover who is behind the attacks on Antion, learn what their motives really are, guard Damian, defend Antion, and protect her own heart.

The threats are deadlier, the enemies more powerful, the betrayals more devastating, and the choices made will have even greater repercussions in IGNITE. No one is safe. No one can be trusted. Not even those most loyal.

Expect to be transfixed, expect to be shocked and surprised, expect to fall in love with this utterly thrilling and highly addictive must read sequel in a series that is positively epic.

    Defy-Trailer-Reveal

I am super stoked to be able to take part in this awesome reveal for the book trailer for DEFY by Sara B. Larson. I loved DEFY and have been absolutely dying to read IGNITE and not just because of the way things ended in book one.

DEFY was released in January, but the paperback edition will be releasing this month on the 25th and then, on December 30th, the wait will finally be over for IGNITE. And I just so happen to think that it will be the perfect final read for 2014.

In addition to the fab trailer, in case you haven’t yet become acquainted with DEFY or IGNITE, I’ve included some information about them and the author below.

And if you’d like the chance to win a copy of DEFY in its soon-to-be-released paperback format, just scroll down to the giveaway a bit further down in the post.

    Anyway…

I happen to love this trailer and can’t wait for you to check it out. So, without any further ado, here is…

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. Cover Reveal: IGNITE by Sara B. Larson + Giveaway

    Cover_Reveal

I am super excited to be participating in the cover reveal for Sara B. Larson’s IGNITE, the second book in her Defy series. I loved both the cover and the story for the first book in the series and I couldn’t wait to get an early peek at this cover for its sequel.

    And….

    Ignite Cover

It’s gorgeous! It’s purple. It perfectly complements the cover for DEFY.

I love that the focus is on the weapons in each cover. I love that the backgrounds hint at nature – leaves, flowers. I love that the fonts are bold yet simple. And I love that these covers immediately let you know that the stories are epic/high fantasy without having to tell you that they are in words.

The image of the bow and arrow is fascinating, eye-catching, beautiful. I love that the arrow is a thorny rose. I love that there is just a hint of faded color on the rosebud/arrowhead. And I love that this weapon is gold in color versus silver like the weapon on the first book’s cover.

I can’t wait to see this cover in print. It’s just so pretty. I know IGNITE’s gorgeous cover will look stunning wrapped around the epic story within and will look amazing on my shelf next to DEFY.

DEFY Blog Tour: ‘Character Bios’ Guest Post + Giveaway

    defy_tourbanner

I am totally stoked to be able to share these Character Bios from Author Sara B. Larson for the DEFY Blog Tour. I have had the chance to meet Alexa, Marcel, Prince Damian, Rylan – all of whom I adore – and a few others who are amazing and one or two who are utterly dastardly.

While not too revealing, especially the ones for Damian and Marcel, the bios perfectly describe these rather important characters. But the best way to get to know each one of them is to pick up a copy of DEFY, which released just yesterday.

It is an exciting adventure. It is a story that is filled with heartbreak and sorrow but also joy and hope. There are battles. Deadly threats. Sorcery. Trickery. Cruelty. But there is also love and loyalty. Bravery. Honor. And there are some incredibly positive messages to take away.

And yes, there is a love story. But with whom? Well, that I’ll never tell.

If I had to list one negative, it would be only that I don’t have the sequel to dive into right now. I have no idea when to start counting down to its release. And I have no clue about what to expect in DEFY‘s sequel.

While I know it’s going to be every bit as epic as this first book in the series, it’s what I don’t know that’s torturous!

Anyway… you’re not here to listen to my random ramblings about this awesome first book in a series that already promises to be amazing. You’re here to get to know ALEXA, MARCEL, DAMIAN and RYLAN just a little bit better.

And you’re here to learn more about the book and author and perhaps to enter the giveaway for a chance to win a copy.

Of course if you want to know a little bit more than what I get to reveal, and you’re not quite ready to read DEFY, be sure to stop by some – or all – of the other stops on tour.

But first, thanks to Author Sara B. Larson, let me introduce you to the characters of DEFY.

    line3

    The Guest Post

Character Bios by Sara B. Larson

    Alexa

Her father was from Blevon, her mother was from Antion, but she is born and raised in Antion. She is tough and extremely talented at fighting. She’s stubborn and determined. But she also has a very vulnerable side that she’s had to suppress to pull off her disguise as a boy. She’s learned to lower her voice and subdue her emotions for her deception. As DEFY unfolds, Alex/Alexa struggles to reconcile the persona she’s had to adopt with who she truly is. She comes to discover the depths of her strength and courage—as her true self.

    Marcel

Alexa’s twin brother. They are almost identical in looks, which helps convince everyone of her disguise. He’s always giving Alexa a hard time, and he’s very competitive with her. But when it comes down to it, he’s incredibly protective of her and does everything he can to guard over her and keep her secret. He’s one of my favorite characters in DEFY.

    Damian

His mother was Blevonese and his father is Dansiian (but invaded Antion with his brother Armando and made himself king of Antion). Damian acts like a spoiled-rotten royal jerk. He’s very condescending and everyone believes he’s lazy and rude and selfish. He also tends to be very sarcastic. He’s had an incredibly hard life due to his mother dying when he was young and his father’s demanding personality. Not everything is quite what meets the eye with him. He’s a very complex character.

    Rylan

Is full Antionese. He’s loyal and strong and fun-loving, but he also has a serious side and he’s the only guard who’s come close to beating Alexa in a sparring match. He is Alexa’s closest friend besides her brother.

    Dashes_Divider

Thanks for having me on the blog today, and I hope you enjoy getting to know these characters (and many more!) better in the pages of DEFY!

    About Sara B. Larson

    Sara

Sara loves writing, reading, and dessert–but the order varies by the day. She wrote her first book in second grade about a woman who had a premature baby, complete with a “to scale” drawing of the baby’s size–while her mom was pregnant. To say she was a bit precocious is putting it lightly. Now that she’s an adult, she writes books for teens that have magic and romance and kick-butt girls (and very few premature babies).

She lives in Utah with her husband, two young sons and baby girl. She writes during naptime and the hours when most people are sleeping. Her husband claims that she should have a degree in “the art of multitasking.” On occasion you will find her hiding in a bubble bath with a book and some Swedish Fish.

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #158

    BookWatchRTWnew

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of January 7th-January 13th that I have pre-ordered.

    line2

    Unhinged

    addtogoodreads

UNHINGED by A.G. Howard will be released in the U.S. on January 7, 2014 in hardcover, paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Amulet Books, the print edition is 400 pages.

UNHINGED is the second book in Author A.G. Howard’s Splintered series. The third full-length book, ENSNARED, is slated for release in 2015.

    Dots_Divider

Ack! So excited that UNHINGED is releasing in just a couple days and everyone will get the chance to read this awesome sequel. A sequel that includes such amazing lines as, “Nothing can break the chains you have on my heart. For you are Wonderland.” A sequel that is all sorts of imaginative and unique and every bit as fan-freaking-tastic as I’d hoped it would be.

A sequel that I had to spotlight for my Book Watch post, even with all the amazing books releasing this week. A sequel I have pre-ordered in both eBook format and in print.

While I would love to go on and on about this magical and enchanting and captivating book, I already rambled about it a little in that post and I hope to talk more about it in my review. And since there are 36 other YA releases this week, eight more of which I have pre-ordered and plan to talk about, I am going to try to keep my rambling to a minimum.

But whether you are a fan of Morpheus or Jeb or Alyssa, there are all sorts of things to love, love, love about this book that will keep you completely and totally riveted from beginning to end.

    Description…

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she’s always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she’ll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

    Independent Study

INDEPENDENT STUDY by Joelle Charbonneau will be released in the U.S. on January 7, 2014 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HMH Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 320 pages.

INDEPENDENT STUDY is the second book in Author Joelle Charbonneau’s The Testing series. The third and final full-length book in the series, GRADUATION DAY, is slated for release on June 3, 2014.

    Dots_Divider

I am super excited for the upcoming release of INDEPENDENT STUDY because I’m dying to talk to everyone about the thing that happened at the end. I was totally stoked to have had the chance to read it early thanks to Jaime of Two Chicks on Books after I was rejected for a review copy from Edelweiss and thought I’d have to wait for my Kindle pre-order to download on January 7th.

This was one of my favorite series last year to discover and the sequel did not disappoint. It kept me glued to each and every page before it practically annihilated me at the end. Wow. I did not see that coming. At all.

I am currently devouring GRADUATION DAY, hoping to finish it before the release of INDEPENDENT STUDY on Tuesday. I’ve heard the final book in the series is awesome and I can’t wait to see how things end.

As I’m on the blog tour for INDEPENDENT STUDY and my post should go up shortly after this one, there will be a few more rambles about this book in that next post, so I’ll just end this short ramble by saying this is a must read series.

    Description…

In the series debut The Testing, sixteen-year-old Cia Vale was chosen by the United Commonwealth government as one of the best and brightest graduates of all the colonies . . . a promising leader in the effort to revitalize postwar civilization. In Independent Study, Cia is a freshman at the University in Tosu City with her hometown sweetheart, Tomas—and though the government has tried to erase her memory of the brutal horrors of The Testing, Cia remembers. Her attempts to expose the ugly truth behind the government’s murderous programs put her—and her loved ones—in a world of danger. But the future of the Commonwealth depends on her.

DEFY by Sara B. Larson will be released in the U.S. on January 7, 2014 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Scholastic Press, the print edition is 336 pages.

DEFY is the first book in Author Sara B. Larson’s series of the same name. The second book in the series, currently untitled, is slated for release next year.

    Dots_Divider

I was totally thrilled to be able to grab an eARC of DEFY through NetGalley. I had heard this book was amazing so I pre-ordered it for my Kindle collection to have forever whether I got the chance to read it early or not. And while I’m not quite finished at the time of preparing this post – I’m at the 85% mark at the moment – I am loving it so far.

Secrets, assassins, sorcerers, hidden motives and plenty of action make this one heck of an exciting read. A main character who is fierce but also sympathetic and likable makes this a must read. And a prince who is quite the surprise is a total bonus.

So… yeah… I guess you could say that I love this book. So far.

With just 15% left to read, I want to get finished with this post so I can do just that. Because it’s just so good I really did not want to have to put it down.

    Description…

Published by Walker Childrens, the print edition is 496 pages.

A BREATH OF FROST is the first book in Author Alyxandra Harvey’s The Lovegrove Legacy.

    Dots_Divider

I am such a huge fan of Author Alyxandra Harvey’s and I am super excited for the release of A BREATH OF FROST on Tuesday. I have had it pre-ordered for my Kindle for ages and ages and I cannot wait until the finished copy downloads.

While I have an eARC that I am also in the middle of reading – yes I’m reading a few books all at once this weekend – this is a book I want to have for my collection. Scratch that. Must have for my collection. I have every one of this author’s books on my Kindle and have read most of them. So there’s no way I wouldn’t have ordered the finished copy.

But I love this setting and the idea of the story. I love the characters I’ve gotten the chance to meet so far. I can’t wait to see how this story develops and how it ends, which should happen before its release on Monday Midnight.

I’m just super curious to find out whether I’ll be stuck on the edge of a cliff until the sequel.

    Description…

In 1814, three cousins-Gretchen, Emma, and Penelope-discover their unknown family lineage of witchcraft. Beyond the familiar manicured gardens and ballrooms of Regency London, a dangerous, alluring new underworld visible only to those with power is now open to the cousins.

But unbeknownst to them, by claiming their power, the three cousins have inadvertently opened the gates to the Underworld.

Now the dead, ghouls, hellhounds-and the most terrifying of all: the spirits of dark witches known as the Greymalkin Sisters-are hunting and killing young debutante witches for their powers.

And, somehow, Emma is connected to the murders…because she keeps finding the bodies.

Can the cousins unravel the clues and mystery behind their heritage and power before their gifts are stripped away …or even worse, another witch is killed?

Published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 288 pages.

ERASED is the second full-length book in Author Jennifer Rush’s Altered series. The third book in the series, currently untitled, is slated for release in 2015.

ALTERED was a book I was desperate to get my hands on and tried to read the moment it downloaded to my Kindle. While I wasn’t able to dive into a book that wasn’t a review book at that time, it’s one of those books I regret not having read from 2013. Yet.

So of course I had to purchase the novella and pre-order ERASED, even without having read book one. I just know I’m going to love it and want to have each one of the stories in this series on hand when I’m done reading it.

And as much as I’m dying to take a sneak peek at this book’s description, to find out what might be revealed about the events in ALTERED, I am not going to look. So I don’t know what’s going to happen in this sequel, what happened in the first book and whether all the characters – Anna, Nick, Cas, Trev and Sam – survived.

If things settle down toward the end of the month, I am hopeful that I’ll be able to read both books and the novella. Though I really wish they were a little quieter right now. Waiting sucks.

    Description…

They thought they had escaped. They were wrong.

After fleeing the Branch with Sam, Cas, and Nick, Anna is trying to make sense of the memories resurfacing from her old life. At the same time, she’s learning how to survive in hiding, following Sam’s rules: Don’t draw attention to yourself. Always carry a weapon. Know your surroundings. Watch your back.

Then a figure from Anna’s childhood reappears. Is it a Branch setup, or could it be the reunion Anna has hoped for? Uncertain of where her loyalties lie, Anna must fight to learn the truth — before she is betrayed again. Ultimately, the answers hinge on one question: What was the real reason her memories were erased?

Jennifer Rush delivers a thrilling sequel to Altered in a novel packed with mysteries, lies, and surprises that are sure to keep readers guessing until the last age is turned.

WHERE YOU’LL FIND ME by Erin Fletcher will be released in the U.S. on January 7, 2014 in eBook format only. It is currently available to pre-order online at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

I only recently learned of WHERE YOU’LL FIND ME when I saw the cover for this book for the reveal put together by Rockstar Book Tours. I loved the cover, but when I read the description I love, love, loved the story and immediately pre-ordered it for my Kindle.

And I can’t wait for its release this week. I want to meet Hanley and Nate. I want to find out why Nate is hiding in her garage. I want to know what she’s running from. And I want to know whether their love story is one that ends happily or tragically or somewhere in between.

I’ve been on such a contemporary kick as of late and this book sounds like just the kind of book I’m desperately in the mood to read. If all goes well this week, and I finish all the various books I’m currently reading and the next one up on the pile, I hope I’ll be able to squeeze this in.

    Description…

When Hanley Helton discovers a boy living in her garage, she knows she should kick him out. But Nate is too charming to be dangerous. He just needs a place to get away, which Hanley understands. Her own escape methods (vodka, black hair dye, and pretending the past didn’t happen) are more traditional, but who is she to judge?

Nate doesn’t tell her why he’s in her garage, and she doesn’t tell him what she’s running from. Soon, Hanley’s trading her late-night escapades for all-night conversations and stolen kisses. But when Nate’s recognized as the missing teen from the news, Hanley isn’t sure which is worse: that she’s harboring a fugitive, or that she’s in love with one.

THE IMPOSSIBLE KNIFE OF MEMORY by Laurie Halse Anderson will be released in the U.S. on January 7, 2014 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Viking Juvenile, the print edition is 400 pages.

    Dots_Divider

I first learned about THE IMPOSSIBLE KNIFE OF MEMORY when I received an ARC for review a couple of months back. And while I haven’t yet had the chance to read it, I did pre-order a copy for my Kindle because I know this author is a fantastic writer and I wanted to have a copy of her next book in my collection.

I had every intention of reading this book prior to its release and was excited to have received the chance to do so early. But due to some real life difficult stuffs going on I wasn’t able to read for awhile and am still a bit I was wary about reading books with anything but light storylines.

But I definitely plan on reading this story and meeting Hayley and her father Andy. I want to find out whether Andy’s return home will be a positive experience rather than a negative one. And I want to know whether there will be a love story with Finn and Hayley.

The description promises a read that is “compelling, surprising, and impossible to put down” and I am hopeful of being able to discover this for myself later this month.

    Description…

For the past five years, Hayley Kincaid and her father, Andy, have been on the road, never staying long in one place as he struggles to escape the demons that have tortured him since his return from Iraq. Now they are back in the town where he grew up so Hayley can attend school. Perhaps, for the first time, Hayley can have a normal life, put aside her own painful memories, even have a relationship with Finn, the hot guy who obviously likes her but is hiding secrets of his own.

Will being back home help Andy’s PTSD, or will his terrible memories drag him to the edge of hell, and drugs push him over? The Impossible Knife of Memory is Laurie Halse Anderson at her finest: compelling, surprising, and impossible to put down.

    SALT-COVER-FINAL-500

SALT by Danielle Ellison will be released in the U.S. on January 7, 2014 in eBook format only. It is currently available to pre-order online at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Entangled Teen, the book is 250 pages.

SALT is the first book in a new series by the same name by Author Danielle Ellison.

    Dots_Divider

SALT is another book I got the chance to learn more about when I revealed its cover just last month. And when I did and also heard that this book was awesome I decided to pre-order a copy for my Kindle.

I am very curious about this book and what its title means to the story. I am curious about how Penelope can use her sister’s magic to hide the loss of her own. And I’m curious to find out what Carter’s secret is.

But I’m most curious about what the demons want with Penelope and what their agenda really is.

If my reading pile isn’t too crowded in early February, I hope to be able to read SALT then. Though as it is the first book in a series, I really should try and wait until closer to the sequel’s release to read it in order to make things easier on myself. But that’s not going to happen.

    Description…

Penelope is a witch, part of a secret society protecting humans from demon attacks. But when she was a child, a demon killed her parents—and stole her magic. Since then, she’s been pretending to be something she’s not, using her sister’s magic to hide her own loss, to prevent being sent away.

When she’s finally given the chance to join the elite demon-hunting force, Penelope thinks that will finally change. With her sister’s help, she can squeeze through the tests and get access to the information she needs to find “her” demon. To take back what was stolen.

Then she meets Carter. He’s cute, smart, and she can borrow his magic, too. He knows her secret—but he also has one of his own.

Suddenly, Penelope’s impossible quest becomes far more complicated. Because Carter’s not telling her everything, and it’s starting to seem like the demons have their own agenda…and they’re far too interested in her.

    The Killing Woods

    addtogoodreads

THE KILLING WOODS by Lucy Christopher will be released in the U.S. on January 7, 2014 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Chicken House, the print edition is 387 pages.

    Dots_Divider

Lucy Christoper is an amazing writer and when I learned of THE KILLING WOODS’ release I instantly added it to my list of pre-orders for my Kindle. I was totally envious that it got released over three months ago in the UK and I was so very tempted to see if I could get a print copy of the UK edition so I wouldn’t have to wait.

But now the wait is almost over and I’ll be able to find out what happened to Ashlee Parker, find out whether Emily’s dad is innocent, find out whether Ashlee’s boyfriend knows something or whether he’s playing deadly games with Emily.

I am super curious to see how the author approaches this story, whether her writing will pull me immediately in, and whether I’ll be able to discover the truth about what happened before the story reaches its end.

    Description…

Fatal attraction, primal fear, survival in the forest: From the author of the Printz Honor Book STOLEN, the highly anticipated thriller about deadly games played in the dark.

Ashlee Parker is dead, and Emily Shepherd’s dad is accused of the crime. A former soldier suffering from PTSD, he emerges from the woods carrying the girl’s broken body. “Gone,” he says, then retreats into silence.

What really happened that wild night? Emily knows in her bones that her father is innocent — isn’t he? Before he’s convicted, she’s got to find out the truth. Does Damon Hilary, Ashlee’s charismatic boyfriend, have the answers? Or is he only playing games with her — the kinds of games that can kill?

Anyway… as there are so many books releasing this week and I do want to get back to reading DEFY, I think I’ll skip my long-winded sign-off to this post. But I will just say that I hope that this week doesn’t completely empty out your wallet as I’m pretty sure it has done to mine. I hope that you are able to get your hands on at least a few of these amazing new titles.

And I am so glad that at least next week is just a little bit quieter, as the week of January 21st has quite a few seriously awesome new releases. A number of which I know I have pre-ordered.

As ever… Happy bookish acquiring and reading!

    line2

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

    My Reading Pile #146

    MRPnew

I did not expect to receive any books this past week, so I was completely and totally surprised when one showed up in the mail along with a super lovely note.

    MRP 146

[Credit for mailbox sharing goes to The Story Siren]

I received a paperback copy of ECHO IN TIME by C.J. Hill thanks to the amazing team at Katherine Tegen Books for the blog tour I’m on this coming Monday hosted by Fire and Ice. It was totally unexpected since my stop isn’t a review stop.

And while my Kindle pre-order copy downloaded just the other day, I’m super excited to have this amazing book in print. The cover is awesome. And it will look lovely on my book tower.

I won’t get the chance to read it prior to my stop on Monday, I don’t think, but I will be sneaking it onto the pile at some point this week because I’m desperate to read it.

And although I didn’t receive any other review books in the mail or in eGalley format by email, there are a couple titles I’ve had for awhile that I’m just dying to devour. And they are….

Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.

    (December 29, 2013 – January 4, 2014)

    The Promise of Amazing

    add

First up on the pile is THE PROMISE OF AMAZING by Robin Constantine. I received an eARC for review from the publisher, Balzer + Bray, via Edelweiss a few months back and I have been dying to get it on the pile since then. While I didn’t get to read it sooner, and release date is just a few days away, I’m so glad to finally get the chance to get it on the pile.

I can’t wait to meet Wren and Gray and find out what happens when they meet. I can’t wait to follow along as they fall in love. And I can’t wait to find out if their love story delivers more than just the promise of amazing.

The description promises a story that is “complicated, awkward, hilarious, and tender” and I am so excited to find out if that’s true. While there’s so much to love about this book, I kinda seriously love the fact that the characters meet in an Arthurian-themed eatery. I have a feeling it will set a more than interesting stage.

While I may not finish reading it prior to release date on Tuesday, I will definitely have this moved off the TBR pile on New Year’s Day. I just have to finish the three books I’m currently reading before I dive in on Monday.

    The Description…

Wren Caswell is average. Ranked in the middle of her class at Sacred Heart, she’s not popular, but not a social misfit. Wren is the quiet, “good” girl who’s always done what she’s supposed to—only now in her junior year, this passive strategy is backfiring. She wants to change, but doesn’t know how.

Grayson Barrett was the king of St. Gabe’s. Star of the lacrosse team, top of his class, on a fast track to a brilliant future—until he was expelled for being a “term paper pimp.” Now Gray is in a downward spiral and needs to change, but doesn’t know how.

One fateful night their paths cross when Wren, working at her family’s Arthurian-themed catering hall, performs the Heimlich on Gray as he chokes on a cocktail weenie, saving his life literally and figuratively. What follows is the complicated, awkward, hilarious, and tender tale of two teens shedding their pasts, figuring out who they are—and falling in love.

    Defy

    add

Next up on the pile is DEFY by Sara B. Larson. I received an eARC for review courtesy of the publisher, Scholastic Press, via NetGalley and I can’t wait to finally get the chance to read this book I’ve been told is awesome by more than one reviewer whose opinions I trust.

The description sounds amazing and I am so excited to finally meet Alex and see just how she manages to disguise herself to fit in as a boy in the king’s army. I can’t wait to meet Rylan and Prince Damian, both of whom sound totally swoon-worthy. But most of all I can’t wait to take the journey with them as they embark upon their adventure.

This story sounds all sorts of epic. And if the writing is as gorgeous as the description promises, I just know I’m going to love, love, love this book. I just hope that this week doesn’t get too OOC so that I can pick it up on Thursday and call it read by Friday, all so that I can ramble about it in next week’s MRP post.

    The Description…

A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king’s army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince’s guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can’t prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she’s sworn to protect?

    Wishful Thinking Reads

My wishful thinking read is WICKED GAMES by Sean Olin. I grabbed a review copy on Edelweiss a few weeks back and I have been absolutely desperate to get this on the pile ever since. But as it isn’t slated to release until June 2014 I haven’t been able to justify going off-pile to read it. Even though the title, the cover and the description are seriously, seriously amazing. Even though this sounds like the perfect read for me right about now.

But the fact that it doesn’t release for months and months means that it can only be a wishful thinking read, no matter how much I want it to be more than that.

    Those Left Behind

I managed to read EVERTRUE from last week’s pile, though I’m still debating whether or not I want to share my thoughts. As it is the final book in the series, anything and everything I could possibly say about it would be some level of spoiler-y. Unless, of course, I didn’t talk about Cole or Jack or Nikki. But if I can figure out a way to do just that, I’d have to be so generic that it wouldn’t be me sharing my thoughts but tiptoeing through a minefield. So I’m not sure it would be worth it.

I am only just now getting the chance to read A BREATH OF FROST, though. So I am a little behind with this title from last week’s pile. But things got busy with the Christmas holiday, family in town for a visit, and going off-pile to read two “back-on-the-pile” reads I’d missed – UNHINGED and AFTERPARTY – and one totally off-pile read – A LITTLE TOO HOT.

At some point this week I hope to have all four of these titles marked “read” and by the end of the week I hope to add the two books from this week’s pile to the “done” pile. But that, as ever, remains TBD.

    NetGalley Pile Adds & Finds

Perhaps it’s due to the holiday week, but when checking NetGalley on Friday for the purposes of finding some titles to include for this post I came up empty. Not one new title was added this week. Which is definitely good for my TBR pile but not so good for this post.

Hopefully things will be back to normal next week, though I’m glad I didn’t have to fight the urge to request any books this week. It is nice to have a quiet week every once in awhile.

    line3

Even with family in town and the holidays being somewhat hectic, I am getting back on track with my posts. As always, I never seem to be able to manage to be more than one post away from a post-free day on the blog. But at least I’m able to get those daily posts completed. Now I just need to be able to get back into writing reviews. Or, at the very least, book thoughts posts.

And maybe someday I’ll be able to get back to writing those short stories I’m super behind on. Or that full-length novel I’d only just begun recently. But I’m not quite there yet. My head is not in the game enough to be able to be that creative.

Besides… I still have to study for my coastal navigation test and prepare for the next on the water course and exam that’s happening in just three short weeks. I feel like I’ve forgotten everything I’ve learned from the first course, so I want to be able to read the book again before starting on this next course’s textbook.

I may just have to hold off on the coastal nav test until after that class as I’m not entirely certain I have the brains to be able to accomplish both. And work. And read, review and blog.

    Yeah… probably not. But anyway…

I hope you have some super awesome books on your pile this week that will take you to the end of the year and into the beginning of the next. With everything that’s been going on IRL for me as of late, I think getting lost in a book is the perfect way to bury 2013 and usher in 2014. But that’s just me.

Whether you decide to celebrate the new year with a book in hand or whether you opt to wait to embark upon a new adventure until the new year, I wish you a very, very happy reading week ahead. And if you’d like to share your latest bookish finds or the books on your reading pile, just leave a comment with or without a link and I’ll be sure to check it out.

Happy Reading and Happy (almost) New Year!

    Cover Reveal: Defy

    Defy by Raine Thomas

Book One in the Firstborn Trilogy

    Coming April 30, 2012

    ***

When the author reached out to see if I’d like to be part of the cover reveal for her upcoming novel, Defy, sight unseen, I asked if she wouldn’t mind giving me a sneak peek. While the covers for her Daughters of Saraqael series were beautiful and very memorable, I just had to make sure the cover for Defy would be just as gorgeous as I only reveal covers that appeal to me.

When I saw this cover for Defy, I was totally on board. And when I checked out the description for the book, I immediately added it to the pile. It had me right from that second sentence.

The story sounds dark and dangerous and seriously epic. A deadly path. A savior whose life is on the line. A murderous plot. And a fate that must be defied. All of which are wrapped up inside this beautiful cover. I can’t wait to check it out.

    MY THOUGHTS

I absolutely love this cover. The model is beautiful. The teal-aqua color of her eyes is mesmerizing, accentuated by their cat-like shape. It gives her an exotic quality which is highlighted by the colors in her hair.

And I love those streaks that end in the peacock feathers.

The model looks fierce but the pretty facial tattoos help to soften her look. As does that hint of a smirk.

There is a simplicity to the font for the title, which I also like. It’s bold but doesn’t distract from the beauty of the model. And the color, while a bit darker than her eye color, still really pops.

The fact that the cover features only the character and does not include a tagline, makes me curious as to who she is, what she is trying to defy and just what it means to be firstborn.

Anyway, that’s what I think…. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

    ABOUT THE BOOK

Seventeen-year-old Tate is about to make her parents’ dreams come true. Unfortunately for her, their dreams foretell her death.

Eager to explore more of the Estilorian plane and prove her abilities, Tate goes against her parents’ wishes and leaves the area of protection surrounding her home. Her choice puts her on a deadly path…one that leaves her alone, severely injured and battling for her life.

Her possible savior arrives in the form of Zachariah, a male who has removed himself from Estilorian society for more than fifty years. Fighting an unexpected connection to Tate, he must decide whether saving her life is worth destroying his.

As Tate struggles to find a way home, she ends up drawn into a dark Mercesti plot involving multiple murders and a powerful ancient artifact. With the unpredictable Zachariah as her only source for aid, she’ll soon find out if her abilities are strong enough to help her defy her Fate.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Raine Thomas is the author of the exciting and original series of YA fantasy/romance novels about the Estilorian plane. She became truly passionate about writing when one of her stories took an Honorable Mention in a fourth-grade writing competition (who would have thought a story about a dancing spider would garner so much attention?). Carrying that passion with her, she earned her bachelor’s degree in English with a focus in Creative Writing from Georgia State University, then her master’s degree in Humanities from Central Michigan University.

Residing in Orlando, Florida, Raine is a hopeless romantic with a background in the fields of mental health and wedding planning…two areas that intersect far more than one would think. Her years working with children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral challenges inspired her to create young protagonists who overcome their own conflicts. When she isn’t writing or glued to e-mail or social networking sites, Raine can usually be found vacationing with her husband and daughter on one of Florida’s beautiful beaches or crossing the border to visit with her Canadian friends and relatives.
