Shadows in the Silence Blog Tour: Cadan and Ellie Deleted Scene + Giveaway

    SintheSbanner

I cannot believe how lucky I am to get this AMAZING deleted scene from WINGS OF THE WICKED for my stop today on the SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE Blog Tour. I must have read it a million and one times. Then I went and read the finished copy. Then I came back and read it all over again.

And while I do agree with the author and with her editors that cutting the kiss from the book was the right thing to do for Ellie, as a huge Cadan fan, I love, love, love, love, loved reading and re-reading this scene. And I love knowing that at least in one possible version of Ellie’s story she did end up kissing Cadan. And liking it.

Unlike with my first stop on the tour (HERE), I will not delay any longer before I share both the author’s note – which you should really read first – and the scene. Because I know that both are WAY more interesting.

    So without any further ado….

    Line_001

    A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR

You’ll probably skip right over what I have to say so you can read the scene immediately, but I hope that after you read the infamous Cadan/Ellie kiss scene and finish freaking out, you’ll scroll back up to read this. In the first draft of Wings of the Wicked, after several traumatic events occur, Ellie breaks and bolts. She isolates herself in a park and is found by none other than Cadan, the demonic reaper whom she’s become close to. As in the final version of Wings, he convinces her to snap out of it and carry on, but he also professes his feelings for her. In the original version, he kisses her and she is in such a messed up state that she lets him.

My editor read this and said, “Courtney, this is a terrible idea.” She was right. Cadan was kind of taking advantage of her heartache in this scene and the kiss wasn’t right. I say often that this book has no love triangle (not that there’s anything wrong with them! I love them! There just isn’t one in this series.) because there is no one for Ellie besides Will. The purpose of Cadan’s character is to teach Ellie that shades of gray exist in a world where good and evil appear to be black and white. Cadan falling for Ellie gives him the motivation to rise out of the darkness he doesn’t want to spend eternity in and to find redemption. Ellie gives him a reason to fight against his demonic nature and the fate he always believed he was chained to. They save each other, much like Ellie and Will save each other.

Regardless, enjoy the scene that was never to be. It’s not official. It didn’t happen. You didn’t see anything. *waves hands and backs away*

    THE DELETED SCENE

His smile then was smooth and warm, like white chocolate melting in my hands. He brushed my hair back over my shoulders. The snowflakes landing in my hair were tangling it. “You’re putting yourself in a dangerous position being out here without your Guardian.”

“I can take care of myself,” I said, noticing how he’d avoided my question.

“You have to admit, that’s a lot easier to accomplish when he’s with you,” he noted, his eyes on the bare skin exposed after he’d brushed my hair back.

“Why would you say that? You hate Will.”

“I don’t hate him,” he mused, rolling the words around on his tongue as if to taste them. “He’s in love with you, too.”

I froze and stared at him as he continued to look at my neck instead of my face. I didn’t think he breathed for that entire time. His body grew more tense the longer my eyes were glued to him and at last, he swallowed hard and looked up at me. The look he gave me was an intense mixture of shame and a desire for approval. He knew that I understood what he’d said, but I didn’t see regret on his face.

“That’s not very smart of you,” I said slowly.

His lips curved sensually and his fingers trailed along my jaw as he looked down at my lips. “I could do worse.” And with that, his confidence had returned.

I barely noticed the snowflakes falling around us anymore. “What could be worse than being in love with your enemy?”

    “Acting on it.”

He was suddenly even closer, though it looked like he hadn’t moved a muscle. His scent and body warmth wrapped around me and it felt so safe and good here with him on the bench. His mouth couldn’t have been three inches from mine and my heart pounded harder and harder. His opal eyes were so bright that I almost had to look away. It was strange how these reapers’ eyes gave away their emotions so clearly.

“That’s true,” I breathed and swallowed. “But, Cadan…” I knew what he wanted to do, and I wasn’t entirely sure that I didn’t want him to do it. If he did, then I wouldn’t stop him. I thought of Will, of how we were so broken. I shouldn’t have been sitting on that bench with Cadan, about to let him kiss me, but I didn’t care. Will and I weren’t okay, and all we seemed to do lately was hurt each other. Maybe something new was my cure. His hand cupped my cheek and his fingers slid into my hair. His gaze searched every last inch of my face, maybe looking for a sign in my expression that told him to stop. Inside, I was screaming yes.

He leaned so close that I tasted his breath on my lips as my own caught in my chest. His brow furrowed with determination as his lips finally met mine and he took a deep breath, taking everything in—taking me in. The kiss was strong and impatient, as if he’d wanted it for so long that he couldn’t help himself. His mouth was warm and smelled sweet, and the more I returned his kiss, the more he relaxed. Despite all of the confidence he radiated, he was still so unsure of himself. And yet, he was an amazing kisser. When his body eased up, he kissed me deeper and seemed to melt right into me, all golden heat, hunger, and desperation. And then Will’s face flashed in my mind and the memory of him made my skin burn like acid everywhere that Cadan touched me. I peeled away from Cadan and he stared at me with broken eyes. He opened his mouth to speak and it took several tries for the words to come out.

“That was a terrible idea,” he said almost breathlessly. “I am so screwed.”

“Cadan,” I said, having no idea what to say to him. He’d just kissed me and I’d let him. A demonic reaper. Even scarier than that, I’d liked it. I liked him. I didn’t know him that well, but I trusted him. Something about him reminded me of Will, but at the same time, they were nothing like each other. They were both the opposite of what they were supposed to be: Will was darkness and strength and determination, and Cadan was like sunlight. Refreshing and golden. And right now, I needed anything but more darkness in my life.

He gave me such a sad look that I reached up and touched his cheek and his ear and the silk of his hair, just to make sure the strands weren’t spun from gold. “I can’t have you, can I?” he whispered.

    I frowned. “Cadan…”

“If you say my name every day until I die,” he said with a gentle laugh, “then even the worst ending for me will be a joyful one.”

I smiled and kissed him on the cheek. He lowered his head until it rested on my shoulder and I stroked his hair. Everything about this was so strange, and yet so contenting. But even though I needed some kind of comfort, I had a feeling that he needed it more than I did. I held him, felt his breath on my shoulder beneath my coat, felt his hand lightly on my arm, still felt the brush of his lips on mine from moments ago. This is Cadan. The thought ran through my mind a hundred times and still I couldn’t fully comprehend it. Bastian’s son.

He sat up and looked into my eyes, his gaze deep and drilling. “I’ll do anything for you,” he said, his voice husky and earnest. “I’ll kill Bastian. I’ll even leave you alone if you want me to.”

    I exhaled. “I don’t know what I want.”

He smiled. “You and me both.”

I studied his face without speaking for several moments. This time with him was exactly what I needed—kissing him aside. “Thank you, Cadan. You saved me tonight.”

“Go back to your Guardian,” Cadan said, his smile faint and longing.

I didn’t want to, but he was right. If I died without ending any of this awful mess, then my parents would have died for nothing. Will’s pain would have been for nothing. I couldn’t let him or Nana down.

I got up and stood in front of Cadan, looking down into his face. I ran my hand through his hair and he closed his eyes just for that moment. “Goodbye, Cadan.”

His eyes opened again, that crystalline fire opal bright in the dark. “Goodbye, Ellie.”

Wasn’t that just amazing? I mean ahhhhh-mazing amazing? I mean, the kind of amazing that ensures that you will check out WINGS OF THE WICKED just to see what words are exactly the same and what words are different?

It was exactly that kind of amazing, wasn’t it?

And I am so unbelievably stoked to have been able to share this scene with you all on my blog today.

I am also so thankful to Author Courtney Allison Moulton for sharing this scene, for allowing it to be a part of my blog’s stop, and for writing this absolutely gorgeous series with forever characters that I will adore for always.

And once again I have to thank Page Turners for including me as part of this tour and for sending me this scene quite a few days earlier than my stop so that I could get control of my emotions before having to create this post. The alternative would have been scary.

Before you go, be sure to check out the tour schedule below for direct links to the other awesome stops on this tour. And if you haven’t had the chance to grab a copy of SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE or add it to your shelf on Goodreads, there are a few links below where you can find it and the recently released novella A DANCE WITH DARKNESS.

Shadows in the Silence Blog Tour: Teaser + Giveaway

    SintheSbanner

I am so unbelievably excited to be a part of the SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE Blog Tour. As anyone who has visited my blog since the beginning knows, I am a huge fan of author Courtney Allison Moulton’s Angelfire series.

ANGELFIRE was one of my earliest reviews on the blog. Ellie, Will and Cadan were among the very first characters I met when I started blogging. They are characters I count among my favorites, characters that I will always feel a connection to, and characters that will always hold a place in my heart.

I recently re-read the first two books in the series in anticipation of SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE and I fell even more in love with them. And while reading this final book in the series was heartbreaking, as I knew I’d have to say goodbye at the story’s end, it was also amazing.

It was the perfect ending to this incredible series. It was hands-down the best book of the series. And it made saying goodbye just a little bit easier. But only just a little bit.

Getting the opportunity to be a part of this “farewell” tour is such an incredible honor. I can’t thank Page Turners Blog and author Courtney Allison Moulton enough for allowing me to be a part of it. And I love that for my two – yes there are TWO – stops on the tour, I get to showcase a teaser and a deleted scene. Plus there is a seriously awesome giveaway to share.

While the Twitter chat already happened, each stop on the tour offers some amazing peeks at SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE, a couple of deleted scenes, a couple “extras,”  the Angelfire artwork and a look at the author discussing her writing journey – the post I’m most excited for.

Well… that and those deleted scenes. But those are for other weeks.

For today, my stop includes a wicked awesome teaser. One that is so unbelievably perfect because it showcases some of the things I love most about this series. It highlights just how kick-a** Ellie is. It shows just how open-minded and trusting she is. It is a scene that includes Cadan. And with its final sentence leaves a little bit of doubt behind about….

Okay, I’ll say no more. I’ll let you read it to find out just what I’m talking about.

But before that action-packed and seriously awesome peek, I’ve included a description for SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE and one for the recently released novella A DANCE WITH DARKNESS about Madeleine and Bastian, if you’d like to check them out.

There is also a little bit about the author and links to all sorts of places you can find her online. And if you haven’t yet seen it, I’ve included the SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE trailer for your viewing pleasure.

Of course you can skip to the teaser first…. I know I would. It’s just that awesome. But don’t forget to check out the other stops on this tour and if you’re in the U.S. be sure to enter the giveaway.

    The Trailer

    Teaser

A hand closed around my neck and jerked me around. More hands grabbed my arms, halting my sword strikes, and they yanked the Khopesh swords from my grip. I thrashed against them, but at least three reapers had hold of me—there were just so many bodies, so many that I couldn’t focus, couldn’t think. I could only move and throw myself around. Gabriel was coming, I could feel that part of me swimming to the surface from black depths. I could see the reflection of my face in the glossy black eyes of the demonic reaper choking me. My own eyes were filling with white as I began to lose myself to my power, but I couldn’t let that happen. I tightened my entire body, straining to keep hold of my sanity, to stay here. If I let go, I was sure I could destroy every last one of the reapers in the room—but that included Cadan.

    Cadan.

He was there, appearing out of nowhere, slicing the head off one of the reapers holding my right arm. Now that I was partially free, I locked my gaze with the reaper squeezing my throat. I slammed my hand into the weak point on her arm, right into her elbow joint. Bone snapped and she released me as she threw her head back and screamed in pain and rage. I smashed my palm into her face, shattering her nose, driving bone and cartilage so deep into her skull that she turned to stone immediately—dead.

I turned to the last reaper holding my other arm and I buried my knee in his gut, making him double over with a grunt. A shadow fell over both of us and I looked up, gasping, with just enough time to dive to the side as Cadan slashed his sword through the reaper’s neck, nearly taking my own off with it. The reaper’s grip went slack and he crumbled to stone in front of me.

Demonic energy exploded in my face, sending me flying across the room like a kicked doll. I landed hard on a table, pain shooting up and down my spine, wood cracking under me. I looked up and stared into the face of the vir as she came down through the air. I rolled off the table and hit the floor just as she hit the table, shattering it beneath her weight. I scrambled toward my swords. She tore at me, claws hooking my clothes as my hands found the silver helves. I bounced to my feet and reeled on her. My sword disappeared into her chest, slipping under her ribcage and shredding her heart. She screamed as her body went up in flames, and another demonic presence flashed behind me. I swung my body around with a cry of desperation, my blade sweeping up toward a bare throat—and I stopped, my sword barely an inch from taking off Cadan’s head as he locked eyes with me. I gasped and the angelfire went out. I lowered the Khopesh and he swallowed hard with a deep breath.

“Sorry,” I mumbled, embarrassed that I’d nearly just killed him.

“No sweat.” He looked around uncomfortably, but we’d destroyed every demonic vir. The female was the last of them—besides, Cadan at least. I took a moment to realize that I had never expected to find myself fighting alongside a demonic reaper. But he’d had my back very much like Will had always done.

    florals_001

Wasn’t that amazing? Don’t you wish you could just dive right into SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE and continue the story to find out what’s going to happen next?

    I know I do!

And even though I recently read SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE, now that I have my finished copy I’m so very tempted to read it again. To get swept up in this world once again. To fight the epic battles with Ellie yet again. To say goodbye all over again.

But maybe I’ll wait until after the tour. So I can read those deleted scenes and be able to put them in context with story. And also so I can hear from the author just what the journey has been like and just how difficult it has been to say goodbye.

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #109

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of January 29th-February 4th that I have pre-ordered.

    05

    Shadows in the Silence

SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE by Courtney Allison Moulton will be released in the U.S. on January 29, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Katherine Tegen Books, an imprint of HarperCollins, the print edition is 480 pages.

SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE is the third and final full-length book in Courtney Allison Moulton’s Angelfire series.

    Line_001

I am so unbelievably excited that SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE is releasing this week. While I had the chance to read it early, I desperately want to have the finished copy in my collection. And as this is one of my favorite series I am getting both the eBook version and the print edition on Tuesday.

As I have reviewed it and talked about it in my Book Watch post a few weeks ago, I am trying very hard not to reveal too much. About just what happened at the end with the characters that made it that far. About the “ultimate battle for Heaven and Earth.” And about who lives and who dies in this amazing and totally epic conclusion to this series.

I am heartbroken that the series has ended and that I will have to say goodbye. Even though I did read it and have technically said goodbye already, it didn’t really feel like goodbye because the final book wasn’t released officially. Well this week it will be releasing. And I’m so very sad to see this series end.

But I do plan on re-reading this series again and again. Ellie and Will and Cadan are characters that are so very memorable. They’re flawed and imperfect but even more perfect for their flaws. They’re brave. They’re loyal. And they’re absolutely wonderful characters to have gotten to know these past couple of years.

SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE was the perfect end to this action-packed, heartbreaking and utterly riveting series. This final book shows even more character growth, even more deadly battles, even more depth to the story and an ending that…. Nope. Not going to reveal that.

    The Madman's Daughter

THE MADMAN’S DAUGHTER by Megan Shepherd will be released in the U.S. on January 29, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It’s currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Balzer + Bray, an imprint of HarperCollins, the print edition is 432 pages.

THE MADMAN’S DAUGHTER is the first book in the author’s series of the same name. The second and third books in the series are as yet untitled. Book two is due out in 2014 and book three in 2015.

    Line_001

I hadn’t really heard of this book until Jaime of Two Chicks on Books said that this was an absolute must read for me. So I trusted her judgment and pre-ordered the book without actually looking into just what it was about.

Well now that release date is almost here and I’m putting together this post I decided it was time to find out. And I had no idea it was inspired by THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU. That it was a story about Juliet, Dr. Moreau’s daughter, who discovers that he is, in fact, alive and travels to the island to find out if the rumors about his experiments are true.

I had no idea… and now I’m totally creeped out. And I’m a little nervous about it downloading to my Kindle this week. Because the original book totally freaked me out. I am totally squeamish about books involving scientific experimentation. The idea of cross-species experiments are absolutely horrifying to me. And I just know this book will give me nightmares.

The description calls it a “dark and breathless Gothic thriller” and I hope I have the courage to dive in. Because I am already imagining these creepy humanoid animals and it’s giving me the chills.

    Nobody But Us

NOBODY BUT US by Kristin Halbrook will be released in the U.S. on January 29, 2013 in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, an imprint of HarperCollins, the print edition is 304 pages.

    Line_001

I am so excited that NOBODY BUT US is releasing this week. I have desperately wanted to read this book ever since I first heard about it. I was immediately sold by the first lines in the description – “Bonnie and Clyde meets IF I STAY.” The fact that it’s “heart-wrenching” is just icing on that already tasty-sounding cake.

I can’t wait to meet Zoe and Will and find out just what their pasts hold that makes them feel they have to run from them. I love the idea that this story is told from both characters’ perspectives. And I can’t wait to find out how it all ends… even if the ending isn’t a happy one.

I am just so curious about what dangers abound and what choices they’ll have to make. This book sounds like it will be absolutely heartbreaking and I seriously hope I can read this next week.

WHAT THE SPELL by Brittany Geragotelis will be released in the U.S. on January 29, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 336 pages.

WHAT THE SPELL is the first book in the author’s Life’s a Witch series. The second book in the series, LIFE’S A WITCH, is slated for release on July 9, 2013 and the third book in the series, THE WITCH IS BACK, is slated for release in January 2014.

    Line_001

WHAT THE SPELL is such a fun, easy-to-read and delightful book. I am so stoked that it’s releasing this week and that the finished version will download to my Kindle on Monday Midnight.

I don’t want to talk too much more about this book as I have read it and will be reviewing it this week on the blog. But I will just say that I loved getting to meet Brooklyn and getting to see just how accessing her powers changes her life.

WHAT THE SPELL was a super quick one-sit-read for me. It was the perfect escape with writing and characters I adored. And I can’t wait to read the other books in the series.

    Stolen Nights

STOLEN NIGHTS by Rebecca Maizel will be released in the U.S. on January 29, 2013 in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by St. Martin’s Griffin, the print edition is 320 pages.

STOLEN NIGHTS is the second book in author Rebecca Maizel’s Vampire Queen series.

    Line_001

I feel like I’ve been waiting a lifetime and a half for this second book in the author’s Vampire Queen series. I’d waited ages for the first book to be released in eBook format and then heard that this sequel was delayed. So I decided to wait to read book one until after STOLEN NIGHTS was released so that I didn’t have to wait.

Well, the wait is just about over. And I’m dying to dive into this series whose description for the first book had me desperate to get my hands on it. The opening quote made me melt – “‘Throughout all my histories, I found no one I loved more than you… no one.'”

Those first lines broke my heart – “Those were some of Rhode’s last words to me. The last time he would pronounce his love. The last time I would see his face.”

So, yes, as you can imagine I’ve been just dying to meet Lenah Beaudonte. To find out why Rhode sacrificed himself for her. To learn how she could possibly fall in love with Justin when someone like Rhode had done what he’d done for her.

And you can imagine just how tough it’s been to wait for this sequel, whose description I will not take a peek at.

But now that both books are out, I cannot wait to dive in and find out for myself just what happens. And I plan on doing that in the next few weeks because I’ve waited long enough.

    Asunder

ASUNDER by Jodi Meadows will be released in the U.S. on January 29, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Katherine Tegen Books, an imprint of HarperCollins, the print edition is 416 pages.

ASUNDER is the second book in author Jodi Meadows Newsoul series. The third book in the series, currently untitled, is slated for release in 2014.

    Line_001

I have not yet read the first book in the Newsouls series but I’ve been told that I absolutely must read it and that I just had to get book two, ASUNDER. And so I pre-ordered it for my Kindle.

I haven’t yet met newsoul Ana. I haven’t found out why a soul just vanished when she was born. I haven’t learned whether she was a nosoul or responsible for the attack on Heart. And I haven’t yet met Sam and found out whether they only have one lifetime to be together.

But I just had to take a peek at the description for ASUNDER. I just couldn’t resist.

I am so curious to find out just what darksouls are. I am anxious to find out why Ana’s presence is a “reminder of unstoppable changes.” And I’m nervous about whether Ana will be able to believe in Sam’s feelings for her and what will happen if she doesn’t.

This series sounds absolutely gorgeous and I cannot wait to get the chance to read both books. The descriptions alone makes these books sound like must reads for me and I hope to read them both in February or March.

    Prodigy

PRODIGY by Marie Lu will be released in the U.S. on January 29, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Putnam Juvenile, the print edition is 384 pages.

PRODIGY is the second book in author Marie Lu’s Legend series. The third book, as yet untitled, is slated for release in 2014.

    Line_001

Marie Lu’s series is yet another one I haven’t started on. I own book one and just had to pre-order PRODIGY for my collection. Mainly because everyone says this series is amazing and I don’t want to be the very last person to read it. Although I won’t be diving in until book three’s release, so that I won’t have to wait between books and can experience this series all at once.

There is something very reminiscent of The Hunger Games with these books – perhaps it’s the militaristic dystopian setting and the books’ covers. Which may be the reason why I wasn’t instantly drawn to the stories. But I did take a peek at the writing in LEGEND and from that alone I know that they’ll be books I will easily devour.

I just don’t want to have to suffer the wait between releases. I want to read June and Day’s story from beginning to end without pause. I want to find out what life is like in the Republic without having to leave the world. And I want to see whether they will be able to “change the nation” and “give voice to a people silenced for too long” without having to hang off the side of a cliff for a year before I get those answers.

I’m just not entirely sure I will be able to wait.

    Til the World Ends

‘TIL THE WORLD ENDS by Julie Kagawa, Ann Aguirre and Karen Duvall will be released in the U.S. on January 29, 2013 in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin Luna, the print edition is 368 pages.

‘TIL THE WORLD END contains three stories – DAWN OF EDEN by Julie Kagawa, a prequel novella in her Blood of Eden series, THISTLE & THORNE by Ann Aguirre and SUN STORM by Karen Duvall.

    Line_001

I pre-ordered this book not realizing at the time that there were three short stories contained within. But I’ve since read the descriptions for all three that comprise ‘TIL THE WORLD ENDS and I cannot wait until it downloads this week.

While I haven’t yet read the first book in Julie Kagawa’s Blood of Eden series, I love the sound of this prequel, DAWN OF EDEN. This virus, the Red Lung, sounds horrific and I’m so curious to find out just what “strange things are happening to the remains of the dead.”

Ann Aguirre’s story THISTLE & THORNE sounds awesome. I can’t wait to see what “evil plot” Mari Thistle and Thorne Goodman have to face in this world that has become a “vast chemical wasteland.” I know from taking a peek at Ann Aguirre’s ENCLAVE the worlds she creates are amazing, so I am super excited to read this short story by the author.

And SUN STORM by Karen Duvall sounds so wildly different and exciting. I love this power that she’s given her character Sarah Daggot. The idea of Kinetics – those “with the power to sense coming storms” – sounds wicked awesome. And I cannot wait to read just how they attempt to battle against the sun.

    THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS COVER

THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS by A.R. Kahler

    Pub. Date: January 29, 2013

    Publisher: 47North

    (AMAZON)

The print edition and completed Kindle eBook edition of THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS are releasing this week. As I’d already purchased – and nearly finished – the serial eBook edition I’ve listed it here.

And I just have to say that this book is AWESOME!

    END OF UPDATE

    02

This is a HUGE week for releases. I have eight books pre-ordered and am so very tempted to purchase Andrew Fukuda’s book, too. While I’ve read two of the books I have on order, that leaves six for the TBR pile. And as a few of them have previous books in the series that are still on the TBR pile, that means a LOT more reading if I want to catch up.

I am desperately hoping I can read Kristin Hallbrook’s NOBODY BUT US in the next couple of weeks, but as I am already so very far behind on my reads for the year it may be a couple weeks beyond that.

And I’m battling the urge to read INFINITE DAYS and STOLEN NIGHTS right now. Because that description… oh… my… gosh… I’m just dying to read them both right now…. Well, on Tuesday when I get my hands on book two, that is.

And I have this total morbid curiosity about THE MADMAN’S DAUGHTER even though it totally sounds like it will give me nightmares.

With eight new books being added to my collection I think I need to follow Parajunkee’s advice once more about the reading more and talking less. And I hope to do more of the one and less of the other this week because there are some awesome new books being added to my collection.

But what about you? Do you have any new releases getting added to your collection that you’re as excited for as I am for mine? Is PRODIGY or ASUNDER a book you’ve been desperately waiting to read but have had to suffer a long wait to get your hands on it? And are you as excited and sad, all at once, about reading and then saying goodbye to the Angelfire series when you read SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE?

I’d love to know what books you’re most excited for this week. And I hope you’ll have some awesome new additions for your collection this week and that it will be a happy reading week ahead!

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

Book Watch: Shadows in the Silence

Shadows in the SilenceSHADOWS IN THE SILENCE by Courtney Allison Moulton will be released in the U.S. on January 29, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Katherine Tegen Books, an imprint of HarperCollins, the print edition is 480 pages.

SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE is the third and final full-length book in the author’s Angelfire series.

    ***

There are a ton of amazing books releasing the week of January 29th, but a I’ve read, loved, shed tears over, reviewed, am still heartbroken because I’ve had to say goodbye to, and desperately want to re-read SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE. So there was absolutely no doubt in my mind as to which book I’d be spotlighting this week.

SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE is a the perfect ending to an addictive and amazing, heartwarming and heartbreaking and action-packed series. The battles are epic. Questions are answered. Choices are made. Lives are lost.

I couldn’t think of a more perfect way to say goodbye. Though with the release of the eNovella A DANCE WITH DARKNESS, I get one more peek into this world. Even if it’s a look at Madeleine’s story and not Ellie, Will and Cadan’s.

As I have read this book, I can’t pretend to guess at just what the outcome will be when Ellie must fight for Will as the description mentions. Or when she has to battle for all of humanity. Or fight to save herself. Because I know what Ellie must do and has done. I know what the outcome is. I know what price must be paid. And I know whether it’s a heartbreaking or happily-ever-after ending.

I can say, however, that I was glued to this book from start to finish. I was caught up in a tale that felt very epic in nature. I was transported into this world which revealed more about Ellie’s past, set the characters and readers alike on a quest, put Ellie on a collision course with destiny, and which built to an incredibly climactic finish.

Of course I won’t say anything more about that. Or about the decision Ellie had to make. Or about how certain characters felt about her choices. Or about who lived and who died.

But I can say that this series was an absolute pleasure to read, it’s one that I’ve re-read just recently and loved even more than I did the first time. It’s one that will forever hold a place in my heart and on my eBook shelves. And it’s written by an author who I will keep on my radar for as long as I’m a reader.

Oh and in case I forgot to mention it, this book was the best one of the series.

So, yes, SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE is a book that I most definitely have watched, will continue to watch and am so thrilled to call the book to watch for the week of January 29th. Even with all the other amazing titles releasing that week.

    About the Book

    Goodreads description:

Your strength in heart and hand will fall. . . .

Ellie knows that the darkest moments are still to come, and she has everything to fight for:

    She must fight for Will.
The demonic have resorted to their cruelest weapons to put Will in mortal danger, and Ellie makes an unlikely alliance to save him and to stop Lilith and Sammael, who seek to drown the world in blood and tear a hole into Heaven.

    She must fight for humanity.
As the armies of Hell rise and gather for the looming End of Days, Ellie and her band of allies travel to the world’s darkest and most ancient regions in her quest to come into her full glory as the archangel Gabriel.

    And Ellie must save herself.
Her humanity withers beneath the weight of her cold archangel power, but Ellie must hold tight to who she is and who she loves as she prepares for the ultimate battle for Heaven and Earth.

In this final installment in the Angelfire trilogy, Courtney Allison Moulton brings her dark world of epic battles and blistering romance to a blazing bright conclusion.

    The topic for today is…

    Best Book Boyfriends of 2012

The rules insist that they be books that I not only read in 2012 but that were released in 2012… but… well, I’m not exactly one for sticking to the rules. (Last year, for my Top 10 Book Boyfriends in 2011 list, I had nearly twice the honorable mentions as I did book boyfriends. Yeah. So much for rules.)

I mean, I can’t just leave off a few of my favorite book boyfriends just because I read their books early or read them a little bit late, can I? Noooo. I can’t do that.

But I have decided to limit it to just one boy per book – which almost always means the bad boy. Sorry Az, Will, Adam, Jack….

And because I’ve taken the plunge and spent a little too much time reading non-YA releases, I just had to create a book boyfriends post on my non-YA blog. Because there is just no WAY I could leave those darker, sexier, older book boyfriends out of the mix this year.. Though all I can say is that I am so relieved that I did not devour all the books in Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series… yet….

Next year is going to be so tough.

    Book-Boyfriends

    1.

    Before I WakeTod

Good boy or bad boy: Good… most of the time

Favorite characteristics: Angelic in appearance with a devilish personality, sarcastic, charming

Best line: Too many to count, but here’s one…

“I’m well aware.” Tod sat up and pulled me up with him until we faced each other on my bed. “Forever used to feel like a curse. Now it feels like a promise,” he said, and my chest ached, and I loved that feeling–that rare pain that came from feeling too much, so different from the emptiness I’d almost gotten used to. “All you have to do is stay here with me.”

Why he won: Do you have to ask?

Won out over: His terribly flawed younger brother Nash Hudson

Book Read in 2012: BEFORE I WAKE by Rachel Vincent

    2.

    Destroy MeWarner

Good boy or bad boy: Bad… except when it comes to… nope, not going to reveal that here

Favorite characteristics: Sexy, broken, redeemable… I hope

    Best line:

I almost forget that she still hates me, despite how hard I’ve fallen for her.
    And I’ve fallen.
    So hard.
I’ve hit the ground. Gone right through it. Never in my life have I felt this. Nothing like this. I’ve felt shame and cowardice, weakness and strength. I’ve known terror and indifference, self-hate and general disgust. I’ve seen things that cannot be unseen.

And yet I’ve known nothing like this terrible, horrible, paralyzing feeling. I feel crippled. Desperate and out of control. And it keeps getting worse. Every day I feel sick. Empty and somehow aching.

    Love is a heartless bastard.

Why he won: Because he breaks my heart. And yet he’s just so broken. Hero potential

Won out over: Adam, who while incredibly sexy and just so perfect, might be a little too perfect

Book Read in 2012: DESTROY ME, UNRAVEL ME by Tahereh Mafi

    3.

    SplinteredMorpheus a.k.a. Moth

Good boy or bad boy: Bad boy

Favorite characteristics: Mysterious, devious, otherworldly, clever, sexy

    Best line:

Raising one hand, he tilts his hat to that sexy slant. “You want me. Admit it.”
Even if he’s partly right, I’ll never tell him. “Why would I want you?”
He lifts thee fingers to countdown. “Mysterious. Rebellious. Troubled. All those qualities women find irresistible.”

Why he won: Because he doesn’t have to be good and yet he sometimes is

Won out over: Skater boy Jeb who is a knight in shining armor but doesn’t have that propensity for wickedness

Book Read in 2012: SPLINTERED by A.G. Howard

    4.

    Wings of the WickedCadan

Good boy or bad boy: Bad boy with a good heart

    Favorite characteristics: Sexy, redeemable, honorable

    Best line:

He was quiet for a moment. “You have a lot more to deal with than most people. Nobody is like you. No one else is what you are, or has ever been what you are. You’re changing, trying to adapt to this world.”

Why he won: Because he chose the difficult path. Because he doesn’t just want to be good, he actually works against everything in him to be good

Won out over: Will who didn’t have to overcome nearly as much to be who he was and to get what he did

Book Read in 2012: WINGS OF THE WICKED, SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE by Courtney Allison Moulton

    5.

    Sweet EvilKaidan a.k.a. Kai

Good boy or bad boy: Bad boy

Favorite characteristics: Dark, super sexy, a bit of a tease, a bit of a jerk, musician

    Best line:

“So that’s it, then?” he asked. I ignored him. “I always wondered what it would feel like.”
That made me curious enough to turn to him.
“What what would feel like?” I asked.
    “Rejection.”

Why he won: Did I not say dark, super sexy, a bit of a tease already?

Won out over: No one. There is no competition for Kai

Book Read in 2012: SWEET EVIL by Wendy Higgins

    6.

    Poison PrincessJack

Good boy or bad boy: Bad boy

Favorite characteristics: Dark, dangerous, smokin’ hot, possessive, protective, knows what he wants and goes for it

    Best line:

Jackson growled at his friend, “Want a taste of dat girl, me.” The look in his blazing eyes . . .

Why he won: Because while he is a bad boy he’s not such a bad guy. Being smokin’ hot didn’t hurt his chances. Not at all

Won out over: Death. It’s still too early to tell if Jack will win next year, but I’m incredibly intrigued by Death

Book Read in 2012: POISON PRINCESS by Kresley Cole

    7.

    SilverBlake

Good boy or bad boy: Both… but leans toward the “good”

Favorite characteristics: Driven, deadly, gorgeous, rebellious, hero

    Best line:

Blake’s lips curve into a smile.
“Mine,” he whispers, shattering the silence.

Why he won: Because he said to heck with star-crossed love. Because he and Brianna have amazing chemistry. Sizzling

Won out over: Austin. Because in SILVER, Austin did that one bad thing. In GOLD, though? Buh-bye Blake

Book Read in 2012: SILVER, GOLD by Talia Vance

    8.

    NeverfallCole

Good boy or bad boy: Bad boy

Favorite characteristics: Manipulative, musician, immortal, sexy

    Best line:

I looked Meredith straight in the eye. “There’s no such thing as epic love.”

Why he won: Because everyone is against him. Because he is so right for Nikki, she just doesn’t know it

Won out over: Jack. Because Jack should have been better but wasn’t. Not until the end

Book Read in 2012: EVERNEATH, NEVERFALL by Brodi Ashton

    9.

    A Touch MorbidLuke  a.k.a. Lucifer

Good boy or bad boy: Bad boy. Can’t really get much worse. He’s Lucifer

Favorite characteristics: Evil. Manipulative. Self-centered. Manipulative. Yeah, I said it twice. Singer. H.O.T.

    Best line:

With effort, she forced the wonder from her voice. “You think I can be bought with pretty things?”
Luke chuffed in disbelief before she turned her attention back to the dresses. “You’re a black hole of a girl, Kristen,” he snapped.
“And to think,” she said. “Most guys would have kept on with the poetry.”
“Most guys aren’t worthy of you. I am. And you are worthy of me. You see my gifts for what they are. You’re a challenge.” He twisted her to face him. “I won’t insult you with bribery again.”

Why he won: Because he makes me grin. He’s just so evil and yet so incredibly charming. Because he makes me want Lucifer to win out. How sick is that?

Won out over: Az who really never stood a chance. But after what Az did, I want to throttle him

Book Read in 2012: A TOUCH MORBID by Leah Clifford

    10.

    StarlingThe Fennrys Wolf a.k.a. Fenn

Good boy or bad boy: A good bad boy

Favorite characteristics: Ability to handle a sword. Charming. Mysterious. Dangerous. Uber-sexy. He is the Fennrys Wolf

    Best line:

    “I’m scared, Fenn.”
“I know, Mase,” he said quietly. “Would it help at all if I told you I was scared too?”
She twisted around and looked up at him. “No,” she said seriously. “Not even a little bit.”
“Good. ‘Cause I’m not.” He grinned. “Not even a little bit.”

Why he won: Because he’s the Fennrys Wolf. Because he is a master at swordplay. Because even with amnesia he is still just so super cool

Won out over: Cal. Why? Because Cal is a bit of an asshat. There. I said it. Mason deserves so much better

Book Read in 2012: STARLING by Lesley Livingston

    Honorable-Mentions

Gavriel Duval from Robin LaFever’s GRAVE MERCY – an absolutely swoon-worthy hero. But maybe just a little too good to make my list of bad boy book boyfriends.

Elliott and Will from Bethany Griffin’s MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH – it was because the two were so equally matched and I couldn’t choose between them that they didn’t make the Top Ten List. I still don’t know who’d be more right for Araby.

Colt from Karsten Knight’s EMBERS & ECHOES – only an honorable mention because I can’t reveal just how amazing he really is.

Daemon from Jennifer L. Armentrout’s ONYX – drop-dead gorgeous, totally swoon-y, super sexy, stubborn, jealous. Would have… should have… made the list. Why am I restricted to only 10? It’s like these lists want me to stop reading!

It’s still not too late to sign up for the event, even though it ends tomorrow. Whether you want to go back and post your Top Ten Lists for any of the missing posts or you just want to start today… you can!

Tomorrow’s topic is Top 10 Books I’m Looking Forward To in 2013. And the only rule is that they be books releasing in 2013. Which sounds easy enough. But not quite. There are a ton of books on my reading pile from 2011 and earlier. Books I’m totally looking forward to in 2013. It will not be easy to create that final list.

    The topic for today is…

    Best ____ of 2012

Today’s post is one where we get to choose what “best of” topic we want to talk about. Last year I chose to share my Top 10 Villains. But as four of those villains don’t feel very much like villains to me anymore, I decided to go with something different this year.

The problem is that I keep changing my mind. First I was going to do love triangles, but I haven’t read books with that many actual triangles. Then I thought of bad boys but that list was virtually identical to my book boyfriends list. After that it was cliffhangers, but I couldn’t exactly remember which ones were really cliffhangers and which ones just felt that way. And forget about favorite heroines… I have way too many of those.

Then – yesterday – I was so sure I was going to do my top ten re-reads – which would have allowed me to list WINGS OF THE WICKED, EVERNEATH, A TOUCH MORBID, IF I DIE, THE LONG WALK, CITY OF BONES… yeah, it would have been a great list.

But, in the end, I decided to go with Favorite Quotes/Passages. Because I always love to tease them. They’re moments in books that stand out to me. And while I have hundreds and hundreds of them, I had no problem choosing a few of my favorites.

Although they have to be from books I read in 2012, I’m also assuming it means that they can be from books I re-read in 2012. Which leaves the door wide open. Though I still refuse to put my favorites if they’re super spoiler-y.

I am also cheating, just a little bit, by including one or two “runners-up” quotes from the books with my favorite passages. Of course some of my favorite books, like BEFORE I WAKE, have over 30 favorites.

Let’s just say it has not been easy.

    FavoriteQuotes

    1.

Before I WakeBEFORE I WAKE by Rachel Vincent

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Avari and Kaylee…

“It’s a crescendo of death, all building toward that powerful note at the finale that makes the audience gasp and hold its collective breath. You are that last note, Kaylee. You are my finale, and the symphony of pain we create together will echo throughout eternity before finally fading into an agonized silence….”

    And

    Tod and Kaylee…

“You can see as much as you want, whenever you want.”

“Unless you’re working, right?” I teased, but the heat in his eyes when he shook his head was unmistakable.

“Whatever you want. Death itself would wait for you, Kaylee….”

    And

    Tod and Kaylee…

“I’m well aware.” Tod sat up and pulled me up with him until we faced each other on my bed. “Forever used to feel like a curse. Now it feels like a promise,” he said, and my chest ached, and I loved that feeling–that rare pain that came from feeling too much, so different from the emptiness I’d almost gotten used to. “All you have to do is stay here with me.”

    2.

    Poison Princess

    POISON PRINCESS by Kresley Cole

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Evangeline and Death…

“Remember, Empress,” he said. “Death always defeats life. It might take time, but I will always win.” As he mounted that mighty steed, he pinned me with his hypnotic eyes. “When your blood bathes my sword, I’ll drink it just to mock you….”

    And

    Evangeline and Jack…

“Evie, I’ve wanted you from the first time I saw you. Even when I hated you, I wanted you.” He raked his fingers through his hair. “I got it bad, me.”

My heart felt like it’d stopped–so that I could hear him better.

“For as long as you’ve been looking down your nose at me, I’ve been craving you, an envie like I’ve never known.”

    3.

    A Touch Morbid

A TOUCH MORBID by Leah Clifford

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Luke and  Kristen…

Luke tilted his head, his neck tense, cracking with a snap. He rolled his shoulders.

“You’re a silly little dead girl.” He glared at her, his tone harsh. “You should mean exactly nothing to me.” He grabbed her chin, forced her to meet his eyes. “And yet I covet you more than anything else on this Earth.”

    And

    Luke and Kristen…

Her breath caught, and she dropped her hand from his shoulder. “It’s been a year,” she said quickly. “God knows you’ve moved on.”

He didn’t break her gaze. “God knows nothing.”

    4.

    Grave Mercy

    GRAVE MERCY by Robin LaFevers

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Duval and Ismae…

His smile flashes, quick and surprising in the darkness. “When one consorts with assassins, one must expect to dance along the edge of a knife once or twice. I bid you good night.”

    And

    Ismae and Madame Hivern…

Her words are sharp, but her voice is sweet, like honey on the edge of a blade, and meant to be cutting. I comfort myself with the knowledge that if Duval ever feels smothered by me, it will be because I am holding a pillow over his face and commending his soul to Mortain.

    5.

Embers & Echoes by Karsten Knight

EMBERS AND ECHOES by Karsten Knight

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Wes and Ash…

“People like you and me weren’t built to lead peaceful lives together in the suburbs. Two of us together in one place is as inevitably fatal as running around a stack of dynamite with a torch.”

    And

    Ash and Colt…

“Colt,” she said, her voice breaking. He paused and looked over his shoulder. “Did we . . . Was there ever a happy ending for us?” she asked. “Any of the times?”

Colt wet his lips and gave her the smallest of smiles. “The odd thing about living forever is that the word ‘ending’ doesn’t apply to us. But just because there are no happy endings, doesn’t mean you can’t hope for a ‘happy-for-now.”

    Then he was gone.

    6.

    Sweet Evil

    SWEET EVIL by Wendy Higgins

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Anna and Kaidan…

He was kissing me. On my neck. I should stop him, I thought, but the softness of his mouth was so . . . Oh. I could feel the beauty of each crease on his lips as they rested against the pores of my skin. The only sounds in the room were our beating hearts and breath.

    And

    Anna thinking about Kaidan…

My nerves shot into high alert. I looked around, but nobody else was near. When I looked back up, there he was, standing right in front of me. Good gracious, he was sexy–a word that had not existed in my personal vocabulary until that moment. This guy was sexy like it was his job or something. Seventeen-year-old boys were not supposed to be so…nongangly.

    7.

    Everneath

    EVERNEATH by Brodi Ashton

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Nikki and Cole…

He put his lips against my head. “Heroes don’t exist. And if they did, I wouldn’t be one of them.”

    And

    Nikki and Jack…

I turned against his body, so I was facing him, and wrapped my arms around his back and tangled my legs up with his.

I’d spent a hundred years with Cole, in a similar position, but this was nothing like it. There were no outside forces keeping us together. No otherworldly powers interfering with this simple act.

No. Jack wanted me close because he wanted me. Separating from him now would be worse than anything I’d felt before. Separating from him now would make me bleed, and I would never stop.

    I didn’t tell him this. I didn’t have to.

We stayed like that for hours–my head on his stomach–trying so hard not to fall asleep. As if we could stop time.

    8.

    Masque of the Red Death

MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH by Bethany Griffin

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Araby and…

“And I’m falling in love with you,” he whispers. “But I would throw you in the water and watch crocodiles tear you to bits, if I thought that doing so would accomplish my goals. Do. Not. Trust. Anyone. Especially me.”

    And

    Araby and….

The velvet voice holds a hint of amusement and a hint of something else. He leans over and looks down into my face. My disorientation intensifies when my eyes focus on his. The tattoos, the dark hair. My heart speeds up. I think . . . I think . . . can a person’s heart stop if she is only seventeen years old? I suppose that if I do fall apart, my father can put me back together again.

    9.

    Wings of the Wicked

WINGS OF THE WICKED by Courtney Allison Moulton

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Ellie to Will…

“How we feel about each other makes us stronger. It makes us fight harder for each other. You’re standing there and telling me you can’t let Michael kill you because you don’t trust anyone else to be my Guardian. Will, you’re the best not just because you’re the strongest. You protect me like no one else can because you love me. Fighting it weakens us. We’re tearing ourselves apart!”

    And

    Will to Ellie…

He closed his eyes and his forehead touched mine. “I’m so sorry for everything. I never wanted to hurt you or make you doubt me. I need you to trust me. I need you. And I love you. I want you. You know I do. I’ll never stop doing any of those things until the day I die for you.”

    10.

    Hallowed cover

    HALLOWED by Cynthia Hand

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Clara and…

I stop. We’re both breathing heavy, snow clinging to our hair, melting on our clothes. I stare down at him. Snow floats around us….

He sucks in his bottom lip for a second, the quickest, tiniest motion, to moisten it.

All I would have to do is close my eyes and let go.

Try it, he says without words, so softly it’s like the brush of a feather in my mind. Let’s find out what’s next

But there’s hesitation in him too; I feel it.

    And

    Clara thinking about Christian…

“You must think I’m an idiot,” he says then.

I look up, started. There are a lot of words I’d use to describe Christian Prescott: mystery, enigma, conundrum, destiny, terrifying, and, well, just plain hot, if I’m being honest, but the word idiot has never crossed my mind. Except maybe that one time at prom.

    Honorable-Mentions

    Starling

    STARLING by Lesley Livingston

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Mason Starling about Fenn…

There was something so naked in his expression, Mason thought. And then she started to actually blush at the memory of what he’d looked like just a few minutes ago. Okay, not naked more like raw–uh, no. That wasn’t helping either. She winced inwardly. How about vulnerable?

    Yes. That was exactly it.

    03

    Silver

    SILVER by Talia Vance

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

    Brianna and Blake…

When he finally lets his eyes slide to mine, there’s anger, yes, but something else too. A fear that claws at my neck. A sadness that floats up from nowhere and pulls me along. Desire, so strong that I want to fall into him.

04So that’s my list. The hardest one yet to create. And I’m still thinking of posting a few of the “outtakes” on The Annex this week. Because there are just so many amazing quotes and passages, I feel awful leaving them off the list.

Are any of those quotes and passages among your list of favorites for 2012? Do you keep a list of favorite passages in the books you read? Or is quote collecting not something you do as a reader or blogger?

    Anyway…

I am super stoked to check out just what topics everyone chose today. There will be so many different types of “best of” lists that it will be extra fun to see just what books, heroes, villains, heroines, love triangles, cliffhangers, et cetera that everyone picked.

    The topic for today is…

Best Books I’ve Read in 2012

Thankfully it doesn’t have to be a book released in 2012, just one I’ve read in 2012, as my reading was all over the map this year. Of course that actually increases the possibilities…. darn it!

And there are a few books I read this year that I’d LOVE to have listed below, but as they are secret books, I can’t. But I hope the authors know that I would list them here if I could.

I am trying so hard to stick to just ten this year, and have put the creation of this list off to the very last minute because of that fact. I thought it’d be easier to do my book boyfriends list, so I started that one first, but reducing it to 27 is where I’m stalled right now. So much for taking the easy route.

Last year I totally cheated and created two lists – Top 10 Debut Books I’ve Read in 2011 and Top 10 Non-Debut Books I’ve Read in 2011. Thankfully I had two blogs in order to create those lists.

This year, while I plan on breaking many of the rules of this event, I will just create the one. And only list four honorable mentions.

    Anyway…

After a LOT of hair pulling, a few tears, maybe one or a thousand shouts of frustration and a ton of guilt, guilt, guilt, here is this year’s attempt at listing my favorite reads of 2012. Though I decided to restrict them to YA reads only AND books I have reviewed. Hey, I have to save SOME of my 2013 reads for next year’s list, right?

[Thankfully I did NOT finish reading EVERBOUND by Brodi Ashton (and read EVERNEATH and already counted it in 2011) so that’s one less book to try and squeeze onto this particular list. And now I’m even more glad I read A TOUCH MORBID by Leah Clifford in 2011.]

So without further ado, after that really, really, really long intro, here they are….

    BIR-2012

     1.

    Splintered

    SPLINTERED by A.G. Howard

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

I am just so madly in love with A.G. Howard’s SPLINTERED. While it is a 2013 release, as I read it and fell under its spell this year, I just had to include it on my Top Ten List.

It touches on everything I love about the books I read. It’s dark. It’s a little bit twisted. It’s magical. It has characters I utterly adore – Alyssa, Morpheus, Jeb, Chessie. And it’s a book that got its hooks in me and just won’t let go.

It has everything I loved about Lewis Carroll’s story and then some which is why it takes the number one spot.

    2.

    Poison Princess

POISON PRINCESS (The Arcana Chronicles #1) by Kresley Cole

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

POISON PRINCESS was my very first Kresley Cole read. It was dark, disturbing, incredibly sexy and so totally addictive. The world was chilling. The Arcana even more so. And Jack Deveaux was absolutely delicious.

Then there was that ending. Oh my gosh, the wait for book two has been killing me. I don’t know how I’m supposed to last until the next book in the series releases. Although I’ve been trying to fill the void by devouring the author’s Immortals After Dark books. Which helps. Just a bit. I’ve only read three but I love, love, love them.

Still… I really, really, really would love to know just what happens in the next book in the series. The world the author created is wicked awesome and I most definitely want more.

    3.

    Before I Wake

BEFORE I WAKE (Soul Screamers #6) by Rachel Vincent

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

Do I really need to say why BEFORE I WAKE by Rachel Vincent has made my top ten? This series is one of my favorite series of all time. I am devastated it will be ending in 2013 and I’ll have to say goodbye to Kaylee, Tod, Nash, Sabine, Emma and even Avari. Yep. I’ll even miss that hellion. I clearly have it bad.

But why this book? Because it is just as much a roller coaster as each of the author’s other books. It piles on the heartbreak. It shocks. It surprises. And it leaves readers – me, me me! – desperate for the next installment.

I cannot believe it’s ending in 2013. I don’t even want to think about it. Because what will I possibly do without the agony of waiting for the next installment in this series?

    4.

    Silver

SILVER (Bandia #1) by Talia Vance

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

What a surprise SILVER by Talia Vance was. I did not anticipate just how much I would love this book. It was an insta-love book for me. The moment Blake and Brianna truly saw each other I was ensnared. And it left me a little breathless for the rest of the read.

The mythology was unbelievably awesome. The world was deadly. The story tied me up in knots. The boys were incredibly swoon-worthy. And I totally inhaled this book.

Of course the sequel, GOLD, blew me away, too. Which I really didn’t think was possible because of certain directions the story took – no I won’t reveal those here! – but as it was such an early read, and a book without a cover revealed, I thought I’d wait to add it to next year’s Top Ten List.

    5.

    Sweet Evil Cover

SWEET EVIL (The Sweet Trilogy #1) by Wendy Higgins

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

I have loved SWEET EVIL by Wendy Higgins for so long that I can barely remember a time when I wasn’t in love with it. From the very moment I learned of its title I was in love. I fell harder when I saw the gorgeous cover. And I was irrevocably in love after having read the description.

It wasn’t just Kaidan Rowe, the totally swoon-y bad boy, that made me love this book. There was a depth to this story, there was definitely a darkness to it. All I could think about was how amazingly captivating and interesting and different this story was. And all I wanted was more, more, more.

I bit my nails to the quick waiting for word on the sequel. Because I just had to know what was next for Kai and Anna, I had to find out how dark this series would get, and I had to be able to return to the world. And no, I haven’t had that opportunity yet, but now that the trilogy has been picked up, I will get that chance.

Which makes me so unbelievably happy.

    6.

    Shadows in the Silence

SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE (Angelfire #3) by Courtney Allison Moulton

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

I had the hardest time choosing which book to pick – SHADOWS IN THE SILENCE or WINGS OF THE WICKED by Courtney Allison Moulton. Because they BOTH deserve to be on this Top Ten List. But as there were only ten spots, I couldn’t justify choosing two books from the same series. But I really wanted to.

This is a brand new read for me, and I just know if I had longer to sit with it before choosing my top ten books, it would totally be a top five. Because it was heartbreaking, gorgeous and so totally epic. It was my favorite book in the series. And I’m still tearing up just thinking about how things ended and the fact that they did end.

The writing was amazing, the battles were fierce and devastating, and the love story was beautiful and heart-warming. I couldn’t think of a more perfect ending to the series.

Though, of course, I wish there were more. Because I miss Ellie and Will and Cadan and it’s only been days since I said goodbye. I hate to think how sad I’ll be at this time next year.

    7.

    Demon Eyes

DEMON EYES (Witch Eyes #2) by Scott Tracey

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

There was no way I was leaving DEMON EYES by Scott Tracey off my list. Because this series is so incredibly awesome. I may have read this book more than a few, but less than several, times this year. And no, it wasn’t too many times.

I got to love Braden even more in this sequel, though it was Drew I fell madly in love with. But it was the unbelievably jaw-dropping, heart-stopping events toward the end of the book that blew my mind, that made me say “no way, no way, no way” and left me shattered. In tears. Broken.

And if that wasn’t enough, the author added another twist to the knife he stuck in my heart. So, yes, of course, this book is a favorite of mine.

    8.

    Masque of the Red Death

MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH (Masque of the Red Death #1) by Bethany Griffin

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

I was so worried that MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH by Bethany Griffin wouldn’t be everything I hoped it would be, that it wouldn’t live up to my super high expectations. With a cover as stunning as it has and a premise based on Poe’s, this story had a lot to live up to.

And it did. Oh my gosh it did. I felt myself sink right into this story from the moment my eyes devoured the author’s hauntingly beautiful writing at the very beginning. I immediately wanted to know more about Araby Worth and the dark and chilling world she lived in.

One where breathing the air could mean death. One where people were suffering from the Weeping Sickness. And one where there two amazing boys – Will and Elliott – to be surprised by.

There was no question this would make my list this year and I am anticipating the sequel, DANCE OF THE RED DEATH, making the list next year.

    9.

    Embers and Echoes

EMBERS & ECHOES (Wildefire #2) by Karsten Knight

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

I am a huge fan of author Karsten Knight’s writing. But I thought that after that holy wow ending in WILDEFIRE that he couldn’t top things in EMBERS & ECHOES. I was so totally wrong.

Because this book… this book… was… so amazing, so heartbreaking – that one scene, oh my gosh that scene still squeezes my heart – and so completely shocking, so action-packed, so freaking epic.

I am dying for AFTERGLOW, although at the same time I’m so totally terrified. Because I don’t know just how dark things will get or if there will be even the tiniest of happy endings for any of the characters.

But, yeah, this is definitely a top ten favorite book of 2012 for me.

    10.

    Unraveling

UNRAVELING (Unraveling #1) by Elizabeth Norris

    (Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble)

UNRAVELING by Elizabeth Norris was another complete and total surprise. I did not expect to fall in love with it. I did not expect it to be a genre that would captivate me. I did not anticipate shedding any tears.

So of course I wasn’t prepared when the tears came. That first time, the second or the third. I did not expect to be as fascinated by the genre. I did not expect to be desperate for the sequel. And yet I was… I am.

I knew I should never have read the description for book two. Because, while the wait for me isn’t as long as it has been for some, knowing just what might come next has made me incredibly anxious.

I love being surprised by books. I love finding a gem when I wasn’t even looking. And that’s what UNRAVELING was to me when I discovered it this fall. So I just had to give it a spot on my Top Ten of 2012 List.

    04

Since this is my YA blog I didn’t feel it would be fair to take three of my top ten spots away for my favorite Non-YA Reads of 2012. But there were three exceptional books that I read in 2012 that rival quite a few of my favorite YA ones and they are…

    Hard Bitten

HARD BITTEN (Chicagoland Vampires #4) by Chloe Neill

One of the most heartbreaking ends to a book I’ve ever read. Ever. A punch to the solar plexus. It destroyed me. I have not recovered.

    Shadow Bound

SHADOW BOUND (Unbound #2) by Rachel Vincent

Fierce. Devastating. Gorgeous. Seriously kick-a**. Sarcastic. Awesome to the nth degree.

    Halfway to the Grave

HALFWAY TO THE GRAVE (Night Huntress #1) by Jeaniene Frost

Sexy. Sexy. Sexy. Wicked. Dark. Deadly. Ah-mazing.

    02

Well, those are my Top Ten Books I’ve Read in 2012 with just four honorable mentions and a shout out to my three favorite Non-YA reads this year. It was just so hard to choose only ten, but at least I kept it close. And those ten are definitely my top ten picks of the year.

I know I rambled on… and on… and on… about my ten picks, but I promise to only do that for today’s post. I hope. But as I haven’t created any of those posts yet I can’t be one hundred percent certain.

    Anyway….

I can’t wait to check out your Top Ten Reads for 2012. Just leave your link in the Linky List below so everyone can take a peek.
