One night, one time, nothing more. That’s all it was supposed to be. They’d agreed their first night together would be their only night together—and Minnesota Glaciers defenseman Dylan Rylie was fine with that. Giant hickeys and claw marks on his ass had never been his style, even if the very memory of Samantha Yates’s merciless sexual energy gets him hard within seconds. He needs to focus on getting a better contract, not mind-blowing orgasms.

One night, one time, nothing more. Fresh off representing the US at the Games and with nowhere else to play, Samantha gave in to one night of frantic passion with the Glaciers’ brawny hotshot. She couldn’t get hurt—not if she controlled the outcome. And she planned to leave Minnesota soon, anyway. She didn’t expect to be recruited to coach Dylan after they’d gotten down and dirty.

When brutal on-ice workouts lead to kinky locker room sessions and “one night” falls by the wayside, Samantha insists on keeping things casual, despite Dylan’s quiet hope for more. But when Dylan goes down—hard—and his career is in jeopardy, Samantha is the first one by his side. What will it take to keep her there after he’s healed?

    The Guest Post

I hope you enjoy this little snippet of Samantha’s and Dylan’s Valentine’s Day. It’s a special outtake created just for this post and provides a peek into their relationship on this holiday. Happy Reading! – Lynda Aicher

    The Perfect Valentine…Or Not

    (A Game Play outtake)

Samantha Yates paced her cramped bedroom, thumbnail whittled down to nothing. The pink envelope laid on her bed, innocent and damning. Why did I buy it? There was zero chance of her sending it to Dylan, let alone actually giving it to him. Yet the card had made her think of him. He’d get the old pickup pictured on the front and the keeper message inside the Valentine.

But she hadn’t kept him, had she?

Damn it. She was being sentimental when it wouldn’t get her anywhere. Emotions weren’t a part of the game. Clear thinking, strategy, clean play—that’s what she knew. Hearts and roses and… That stuff was out of her depth.

Plus they hadn’t spoken to each other in weeks. Why would he want a Valentine from her?

She slumped onto the bed, the card sliding closer as the mattress dipped. She picked it up, flipped it in her hands. The lazy scroll of his name in her hasty handwriting had her throat tightening. Regrets rushed up to well in her eyes, one lone tear slipping out to splatter on the paper.

And now she was crying over him. Double damn. They were done. They had different plans and no chance of a future.

A quick swipe at her cheek, a long exhale. She stood, tossing the card into the trash bin. It was just another day on the calendar. Nothing special.

The text message stared back at Dylan Rylie, queued up and ready to send. Happy Valentine’s Day, Samantha. His thumb hovered over the Send button, indecision twisting his stomach.

    “Let’s go, Rylie”

Dylan jerked his gaze to the retreating back of the Glaciers’ captain. Shit. He didn’t have time to stress over this. Samantha had made it clear. She wasn’t interested in him.

He quickly deleted the text then shoved his phone in his locker. He had a game to prepare for and that was all he should be focused on. What was I thinking? Wishing Samantha a happy anything was pure madness on his part. Stupid fake holiday.

Dylan grabbed his gloves and headed out to the ice. At least he knew what he was doing out there.

MISTRESS OF LIES Blog Tour: ’10 Random Things’ Guest Post + Giveaway

I am thrilled to be participating in the MISTRESS OF LIES Blog Tour hosted by Me, My Shelf and I with a very awesome “10 Random Things” guest post by Author Holly West.

I am new to this series, but I am definitely intrigued. I love that it’s a mystery/crime thriller set in the 1600s with a female protagonist who is more than what she appears. There’s nothing quite like trying to solve a mystery, discovering whodunit, and finding out just how clever the investigator is.

I can’t wait to meet Isabel and see just how she goes about keeping her secret, discover whether she takes King Charles II up on his offer, and find out just how dangerous her investigation really is.

I absolutely love this post by the author in which she totally won me over by her 9th Random Thing. But if you’d like to know a bit more about her, then be sure to check out the post, and the author’s bio, which follow below the book’s details.

If you’d like to enter the fab tour-wide giveaway, scroll down to the Rafflecopter a bit further down in this post. And if you’d like to visit a few (or all) of the stops on this tour, you can check out the schedule at the bottom of this post or click on the banner above to be taken to Me, My Shelf and I, for all the tour details.

    London, 1679

Isabel, Lady Wilde, mistress of King Charles II, has made a good living disguised as fortune teller Mistress Ruby, counseling London’s elite. But after the murder of one of her customers, business has taken a downturn, and Isabel is on the verge of accepting the king’s offer to move into the palace.

Isabel’s plans are interrupted when a beggar girl named Susanna shows up at her home, claiming to be her niece. Isabel always believed that her older brother, Adam, died alone during the plague. When Susanna reveals that Adam was actually murdered, Isabel is compelled to take up an impossible task: discover the truth about her brother’s death, twelve years after it happened.

Isabel’s investigation leads her through the gamut of London society, from bear-baiting matches and brothels to the realm of wealthy bankers. But as she uncovers her brother’s dark secrets, Isabel begins to wonder whether the past is better left buried, especially when uncovering the truth could lead to her own funeral.

    Review: Defiance

DEFIANCE by Stephanie Tyler was released in the U.S. on June 10, 2013 in eBook format and on June 14th in audio format. It is currently available to order online in both formats at AMAZON and in eBook format at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Carina Press, the story is 232 pages.

DEFIANCE is the first book in author Stephanie Tyler’s New Adult series of the same name. The second book in the series, REDEMPTION, is slated for release on September 16, 2013.

Note: This review is based on an eARC that I received from the publisher in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book. A finished copy was purchased for my collection.

Rebelling against her legacy as the MC’s princess, Tru Tennyson escaped the ruthless, male-dominated culture of the Defiance motorcycle club. Three years later, her newfound freedom is ripped away, thanks to a massive hybrid storm that killed millions. Now, in the post-Chaos world of semi-darkness and near-total anarchy where gangs rule, she discovers the dangerous world of Defiance may be the one thing that can keep her safe.

Tru is at the MC’s mercy when she’s dragged back to her former home … and to the only man she’s ever pictured a future with. Caspar is the bastard son of the club’s leader, her safe haven when life got rough — and her onetime lover the night she left. When Tru refuses to trade sex for power and be claimed by a rival club leader, she also dares to announce she wants Caspar instead, throwing the MC into turmoil.

Tru’s brazen revolt could start a gang war and destroy the club from within. Now both Tru and the MC must wait for Caspar’s response … and the inevitable fallout.

Dark, savage and wickedly sexy, DEFIANCE delivers on its promise. It brings readers into a post-apocalyptic world ruled by violence, dominated by those strong enough, brutal enough, organized enough, to stay in power. It takes them into the world of the Defiance Motorcycle Club where women are possessions and battles are often fought to the death.

When Tru Tennyson left home, looking to escape a life she wasn’t sure she wanted and a father whose brutality wasn’t reserved only for his job, she thought she’d never return. But when the world fell apart and life outside the MC became more dangerous than the one in it, going back was her only option.

Even though it meant turning to a rival Club’s leader to bring her back. And even though it meant she would likely be killed or be forced to face a fate much worse than death. But she had to try.

Because she didn’t want to be some prize for the leader of the Kill Devils. She knew she wouldn’t be able to survive on her own. And she didn’t want what happened in her past to catch up with her.

But gambling on Caspar, the Club’s Enforcer, to stand up for her was risky. She had no guarantee he’d be willing to put everything on the line for her safety. She had no idea if he cared whether she lived or died. The odds weren’t in her favor. And after seeing him again, she was certain she bet wrong.

Told from three of its characters’ points of view – Tru, Cas and Mathias – DEFIANCE offers an exciting look at author Stephanie Tyler’s post-Chaos world where daylight is rare and violence is abundant. It is a story about survival – in the post-apocalyptic world and in the MC. About loyalty – to friends, lovers, the Club. About change – for outdated rules, for oppressive views. And at its core it is a love story.

The author created two incredibly appealing main characters who are strong on their own but even stronger together. Tru is a kick-ass female protagonist. She is smart. She is a survivor. And she isn’t above doing what has to be done in order to survive. She knows her mind and she isn’t afraid to speak it. But she also knows when to keep silent. Although a former “princess” of the MC she is not looking for a prince.

Cas is not a typical “bad boy” male protagonist. He is not hiding a soft interior under a hard exterior. He is not a hero in disguise. He takes dangerous to an entirely different stratosphere. And he makes absolutely no apologies for who he is or what he does.

DEFIANCE is a fantastic start to this new series. The story is deliciously dark. The world is refreshingly different. The setting is harsh, gritty, brutal. The characters rough, cruel, deadly, but also brave and fiercely protective. All of which makes for a wildly entertaining read.

    Reviewer gives this book…

    On a personal note…

I knew I was going to love this book. The description screamed that DEFIANCE was my kind of book. It was dark. It was sexy. It was delectable. The world was dangerous. The characters were fierce, ruthless, violent, deadly.

I did not want the story to end. Which makes me really glad that this is a series and not a standalone. Even if the next book focuses on different characters.

I loved meeting Cas and Tru. I loved getting to see the story from each of their perspectives and was intrigued by a third character’s point of view that was offered. I loved getting peeks at their history from before Tru ran off. I loved getting to see what their lives as members of a Motorcycle Club were like pre-Chaos.

It took me a couple of chapters to get comfortable with the clipped style the author used for the dialogue and for the characters’ thoughts. But once I figured out the rhythm and got used to their vernacular everything began to flow. It was the perfect style to use and it fit the story so well.

The world was fascinating. It held me captive from the moment I began reading. It was one I haven’t visited in any of the many stories I’ve read. My typical post-apocalyptic reads involve looking in from the outside on violent motorcycle “gangs” and not being plunged into their world. It was exciting. It was shocking. It was wicked.

But it was the characters that I was most drawn to. I loved that each and every one of them was strong. I loved that even though Tru needed help to get out of her situation, she wasn’t a damsel in distress. She was totally kick-ass. And while Caspar may have been her one weakness, she was also his.

Seeing the story, and their story, come together from each of their perspectives was awesome. It allowed me to get to know who they were in a way I know I never would have been able to had this story been told from just one of their point’s of view. The face each of them presented would never have clued me in on what they were really thinking at those key moments in each other’s lives. So I’m so glad to have had peeks into both of their thoughts.

But I wasn’t too sure what to make of Mathias’ point of view when it was introduced into the story. I wasn’t sure why I was seeing the story from his perspective. And while I absolutely adored him, I am still not entirely sure seeing things through his eyes was absolutely necessary, even though it appears that the sequel will focus on him and his friend Bishop, a character who is a bit of a mystery.

The Motorcycle Club culture is one I am not in the least bit familiar with. So I can’t say how closely the Defiance MC resembles a real one or whether it was modified significantly to fit in with a world that had been ravaged by storms. I’m guessing the general structure is the same, but that everything was amped up. Which made it incredibly appealing.

This story is not one without violence. It was bloody. The characters were on edge, the world was on edge, so things tended to escalate pretty quickly. And Tru’s arrival put things that were already set into motion on the fast track.

But I loved following along as all the pieces came together and the end game was revealed. And no, I’m not going to say whose end game that is. Or whether they won.

Power struggles – internal and external to the Club. Secrets. Betrayal. Brutality. Sex. A love story. DEFIANCE brought it all. And I want more.

    Favorite passage…

There were a lot of passages that I considered favorites. Some were a bit too violent and some were a bit too sexy to reveal here. And while this one between Cas and Tru may be just a tiny bit spoiler-y it is one of my very most favorite ones.

“You have to tell me things. Have to.”

“Will. And you gotta play your game in public till all the shit finishes.”

    “I can do that.”

“No can. Have to. Means your life. Means mine. And, Tru, in case you don’t know it yet, you’re my life. Yeah?”

    “Yeah,” she murmured back.

This review is based on an eARC that I received from the publisher in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

Q&A with ‘DEFIANCE’ Author Stephanie Tyler + Giveaway

I am absolutely thrilled to welcome Author Stephanie Tyler to the blog to answer a few questions about her new book DEFIANCE which releases TODAY!

DEFIANCE is a New Adult title and the first book in the author’s new series of the same name. When I read the book’s description and the short excerpt, which is included below, I just had to make it my first New Adult read. It sounds so deliciously dark, with a fierce heroine and a bad boy or two.

But it was the “post-Chaos world,” “near-total anarchy” and the Motorcycle Club that made this book a must for me. Well, that and a quote from the excerpt – “You’re going to undo me,” he murmured finally.

As I did ask quite a few question… again… and there are all sorts of awesome details about the book and author to check out, I will skip the long intro.

    But just one thing…

Be sure to check out the DEFIANCE page on the author’s website for an awesome image of the MC’s logo and for a longer excerpt from the book.

    … or two.

And the second book in the series, REDEMPTION, is slated for release on September 16, 2013 and is available to pre-order at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

    The Interview

Hi Stephanie, I’m so happy to welcome you to the blog for an interview/Q&A. Your new adult novel DEFIANCE grabbed me immediately. It sounds a little bit dark, dangerous and sexy and totally kick-a**.

Thanks for having me! And yes, those are great words to describe Defiance — and especially Caspar. 🙂

    Q. As my blog has largely focused on YA, my readers may not yet have had the pleasure of “meeting” you. If you had only 25 words or less to describe yourself, how would you do so?

I’m a voracious reader who loves bad boys, alpha males and tattoos. I’m a writer who gets to write the stories I like to read.

    Q. And if twenty-five words just weren’t enough, what one other detail would you like to share?

If I had to pick another career, I’d be a singer in a rock band. (This could only happen if I was granted a wish that made me un-tone deaf.)

    Q. You have an impressive number of successful and enticing titles to your name, but DEFIANCE is your first novel in the new adult genre. What made you decide to take the leap into this genre?

I don’t really have enough control over my characters where I can sit down and say, I want to write a New Adult book. For me it was such a natural progression of the way I already write — I think exploring a character’s past, especially those years between 18 & 25, because they’re so fraught with angst is so important and I realized that I could actually write about characters at that age now instead of making them older and going back and describing their past. I can show them living it.

Plus, Tru and Caspar just arrived in my mind – they are who they are, you know? I couldn’t change their ages anymore than I could change the fact that they’re part of an MC. 🙂

    Q. How has writing a novel for the new adult genre differed from writing paranormal romance and romantic suspense? Were there any changes to the process? To the plot? To the characters? Did you find it easier? More challenging? Did you keep a different audience in mind?

This book has fewer POVs — I typically include lots of subplots in the suspenses and the PNRs. But this book found me shifting to mainly the hero and heroine’s pov, with several of Mathias’s scenes. And nothing about this book was hard. I got the spark of the idea when I was on the treadmill (I tend to plot and talk to myself while I’m walking and listening to music, which is why I can only do it in my house and not at the gym — or they’ll cart me away) and I went to the computer and within three hours, I had the first several books mapped out plus the first five chapters written. When a book and its characters shout that loudly at me, I tend to pay attention.

    Q. While it may be too early to tell, what do you like most about writing new adult?

For one thing, it was my first time writing in first person — not the heroine or hero, but a secondary character whose voice came through that way. I absolutely loved it, and his book will definitely see me writing more first person pov. But also, I simply love that timeframe between the ages of 18 − 25. They were such an amazing time in my life — first time freedoms as well as mistakes.

    Q. You mention on your website that you pitched DEFIANCE as “Sons of Anarchy meets the apocalypse.” Without revealing too much, what can readers expect from this first book in your new series?

In Defiance, you’ll learn about the Chaos, a series of massive storms following a meteor hit close to an active volcano. Picture hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, but all happening at the same time. The world’s struggling to rebuild three years later, but the Defiance MC was really in a perfect position to thrive. They’re built on violence and chaos and anarchy and they’ve always been tough enough to survive most anything.

But Caspar, the head enforcer of the MC, doesn’t know if he’ll survive Tru’s return. She’d got the power to ruin all his plans, and he’s got a tough choice to make — claim her, or kill her.

    Q. Characters are such an important part to the story. In DEFIANCE, your leading characters are Tru and Caspar. What can you tell us about each of them?

You’ll meet Tru Tennyson — former princess of the Defiance MC. Her father was the head enforcer, which entitled her to a lot of privilege in the club. Before she ran away, she was dating Silas, the son of the head of the MC. But she’s really in love with Caspar, Silas’s illegitimate brother. And Caspar’s my favorite kind of character — a true bad boy who respects the woman he loves.

    Q. Did you have a favorite scene to write in DEFIANCE? If so, what made it your favorite to write?

I had a lot of favorite scenes, but a particular favorite was the fight and party scene when Tru first comes back. Mathias asked Caspar when they’re going to be allowed to finally have some fun (although he asks far more colorfully than that!) and it was awesome to watch the younger generation of the MC dance and party and go wild, even in the face of the Chaos. They still had some normal in the face of all the adversity.

    Q. What is it about romantic suspense/paranormal romance that appeals to you as a writer? Do you prefer creating the relationships or writing the action sequences?

My books begin and end with the characters — they’re the driving force and so they yank me all over the place. I follow their lead and try to keep up, whether they’re doing relationship stuff or fighting for their lives.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer all those questions for me and my blog’s readers. I, too, am a fan of bad boys, alpha males and tattoos and cannot wait to discover them all in DEFIANCE.

I love that the story and characters screamed at you to be written. And that Tru and Caspar are exactly who they are and there’s nothing you could do to change them. Those are the best kinds of stories to read. Everything connects, makes sense, flows naturally.

And I really cannot wait to learn more about the Chaos and what Caspar decides to do about Tru. It sounds like he doesn’t have an easy decision ahead of him.

DEFIANCE sounds incredible and its characters are ones I can’t wait to get to know. Thank you so much for sharing just a little bit more about them, your book, yourself and your writing.

    The Excerpt

“You can’t give up on me now.”

“I already did that, a long time ago.”

    “I don’t believe you.”

“You didn’t know me, Tru. Never did.”

“But you know me. And I’m not giving up — I won’t give up enough for both of us.”

He muttered — mainly curses — under his breath. She ran a fingertip over his lips. “You’re going to undo me,” he murmured finally.

“And then I’ll put you back together.”

“You have no idea what you’re asking.”

“I do. You want someone to stand by you while you try to fix everything here. You told me.”

His eyes flickered, a little surprised. “You were too drunk to remember anything that night.”

She smiled, trailed her hand along to cup the back of his neck. “I remember everything about the time we spent together.”

He waited a beat, a muscle in his jaw twitched as he clenched it, his eyes searching hers. Looking for something that she knew she could give him. “That was before,” he told her finally.
