ECHO IN TIME Blog Tour: “Dystopian Fashion” Guest Post + Giveaway

    echo in time blog tour

I am thrilled to be a stop on C.J. Hill’s ECHO IN TIME Blog Tour hosted by Fire and Ice. I read and loved the first book in the series, ERASING TIME, last year for the tour for that book, and I am super excited to continue the series with this sequel.

I am also super excited to be able to share this guest post by the author in which she shares her thoughts on fashion in dystopian societies. I love the idea that fashion trends will get more outrageous versus become more austere in the future. Without something catastrophic intervening, I can totally imagine that things will get bigger, bolder, brighter and possibly become utterly ridiculous.

Though, judging by the photos of celebrities that were included with this post, we’re not so far off from that right now. Yikes.

But whether the future ends up being ravaged by an apocalypse, society becomes oppressed under militaristic rule or the citizens of the future go a little color crazy with their fashion sensibilities, I think it’s fantastic that C.J. Hill, a.k.a. Janette Rallison, chose a colorful, quirky and bizarrely clad future for her dystopian society.

Anyway… enough about my thoughts. The author’s thoughts are much more interesting and include photos. Just check out the guest post immediately below.

And if you’d like to learn a little bit more about this series, the descriptions and places to find both books online follow below the post. There is also some info on the author and places to find her online.

Just below that is a giveaway for a hardcover copy of the first book in the series, ERASING TIME. So if you haven’t yet had a chance to check out this series, be sure to follow the instructions in the Rafflecopter to enter for a chance to win a copy.

And finally, if you’d like to check out the other stops on tour, I’ve included the schedule with direct links to previous stops. There are already some fab reviews if you’d like to see what other bloggers have to say about ECHO IN TIME.

So… after this very long intro, let me turn the blog over to C.J. Hill.

    The Guest Post

    Dystopian Fashion by C.J. Hill

Authors of science fiction novels often take aspects that exist in our society and exaggerate them in their futuristic novels. We already have a society where Big Brother not only watches us. He records our phone calls, tracks our shopping habits, and predicts what we want to buy next. (Which is why you shouldn’t ever look at creepy toys online for a blog about bad Christmas gifts. You’ll get zombie gnomes and animal butt magnets popping up on your sidebar forever.)

Dystopian novels portray a future where the government is so invasive they control things like: who people marry, what professions they’re allowed to have, and when citizens die. Dystopian novels are cautionary tales. In Echo in Time, information in society is limited. People aren’t allowed to leave their cities. Religion is banned. Children are raised in government run facilities. All very dystopian—and why you shouldn’t really want to live for hundreds of years. Apparently the future isn’t so bright.

That said, there are a few aspects of Echo in Time that are quite different than other dystopian books. Frequently in futuristic novels the characters are forced to wear plain uniforms. I don’t see this happening any time soon. Our society tries to emulate celebrities, and a large segment of them dress like expensive clowns. Seriously, I keep thinking that their outfits can’t get more outrageous—but they always do.

Take these celebrity getups. Famous people not only wore these outfits to events where they knew their pictures would be taken, we can assume they actually paid large amounts of money for them. This isn’t the type of clothing you can buy off the rack at The Gap.

Here’s Cher doing a fine impersonation of a trampy bride of Frankenstein.

    Echo in Time BT 1

Whoopi Goldberg appears to be one hat short of Mad Hatter status. (Eat your heart out, Johnny Depp.)

    Echo in Time BT 2

Lady Gaga shows us than one can never have enough shoulder pads–especially in a swimsuit.

    Echo in Time BT 3

In one of her more tasteful outfits, Nicki Minaj appears to be wearing a scribble.

    Echo in Time BT 4

Ah, tasteful didn’t last long. I would call this outfit sister-act-priestess-of-the-devil but I’m pretty sure Satan has more fashion sense.

    Echo in Time BT 5

To prove that men can be just as tasteless, here’s Elton John wearing an ostrich.

    Echo in Time BT 6

And fashion designer Marc Jacobs wore a black lace dress, white boxers, and pilgrim shoes to the Met gala–because crazy is always in style.

    Echo in Time BT 7

Really, when fashion designers are wearing black lace, white boxers, and pilgrim shoes, how long will it be before the rest of us are dressed like this?

    Echo in Time BT 8

Be afraid of the future. Be very afraid.

    About C.J. Hill

    Cj-hill
CJ Hill is a pen name for a YA author who is best known for writing romantic comedies. (Slayers will be her 18th published book.) Her writing has shifted away from the romantic comedy genre, so her editor thought a pen name would be a good idea. (New books will include: dangerous dragons, time travel to dystopian worlds, and flesh-eating beetles.) Since the publisher refused to let her have the pseudonym: The Artist Formerly Referred to as Princess, she chose a name to honor her mother. CJ Hill was her mother’s pen name, or at least it would have been if her mother had published. Her mother wrote a few children’s books and a middle grade novel but was taken by cancer before she had fully learned the craft.

Most writers’ first novels aren’t publishable. CJ Junior’s first novel wasn’t, but somehow was published anyway. Now, even though it is out of print, it remains forever available on Amazon, where it taunts her with its badness. This was another good reason to use a pen name.

CJ Hill has five children, three of whom like her on any given day depending on who is in trouble. She has lived in Arizona for the last half of her life, but is still in desert denial and hopes that one day her garden will grow silver bells and cockle shells or maybe just tomatoes.

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #155

    BW-RTW

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of December 17th-December 23rd that I have pre-ordered.

    line2

    Fracture Me

    addtogoodreads

FRACTURE ME by Tahereh Mafi released in the U.S. today, December 17, 2013, in eBook format. It is currently available to order online in eBook format only at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperCollins, the novella is 72 pages.

FRACTURE ME is a companion novella to Author Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me series. The final book in the trilogy, IGNITE ME, is slated for release on February 4, 2014.

    Dots_Divider

I don’t normally include novellas in my Releasing This Week posts but I just had to talk about FRACTURE ME which I’m totally stoked released today. I have loved everything about this series from the moment I first read the first few pages of the very first book in the series and I am so excited to have yet another story about this world and its characters.

As I am terrified of just how this series will end and how badly my heart will be broken I am so glad to have a companion novella which just might not do as much damage. Though, having read the description, I have a feeling it might….

While I haven’t been able to pick up a book for the past couple of weeks due to some real life stuffs going on, I think FRACTURE ME will be just the book to be able to hold my focus and allow me to escape for a little while. And I can’t wait to dive in.

    Description…

In this electrifying sixty-page companion novella to the New York Times bestselling Shatter Me series, discover the fate of the Omega Point rebels as they go up against The Reestablishment. Set during and soon after the final moments of Unravel MeFracture Me is told from Adam’s perspective.

As Omega Point prepares to launch an all-out assault on The Reestablishment soldiers stationed in Sector 45, Adam’s focus couldn’t be further from the upcoming battle. He’s reeling from his breakup with Juliette, scared for his best friend’s life, and as concerned as ever for his brother James’s safety. And just as Adam begins to wonder if this life is really for him, the alarms sound. It’s time for war.

On the battlefield, it seems like the odds are in their favor—but taking down Warner, Adam’s newly discovered half brother, won’t be that easy. The Reestablishment can’t tolerate a rebellion, and they’ll do anything to crush the resistance . . . including killing everyone Adam has ever cared about.

Fracture Me sets the stage for Ignite Me, the explosive finale in Tahereh Mafi’s epic dystopian series. It’s a novella not to be missed by fans who crave action-packed stories with tantalizing romance like Divergent by Veronica Roth, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Legend by Marie Lu.

    Ashes to Ashes

    addtogoodreads

ASHES TO ASHES by Melissa Walker will be released in the U.S. on December 23, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Katherine Tegen Books, the print edition is 336 pages.

ASHES TO ASHES is the first book in a duology by Author Melissa Walker. The second and final book in the series, DUST TO DUST, is slated for release in December 2014.

    Dots_Divider

When I first read the description for ASHES TO ASHES I knew I had to add it to my list of pre-orders and I can’t wait for it to finally be released on Monday. The description promises tragedy, romance, a story that is “emotionally rich” and an ending that is breathtaking – how could I not want to have this book in my collection?

I love the idea that in this story Callie’s life doesn’t end with her death and that her spirit travels to an ethereal plane populated by ghosts. I love that she is able to bring peace to those she left behind. And I love, too, that she has to fight to save those she loves from the angry spirits who threaten their existence.

I can’t wait to meet Callie and find out whether her story is one that has a happy eternally ever after or is one that ends in heartbreak. But I suppose that even if I were to read ASHES TO ASHES right now, I won’t know for certain. I’m pretty sure I won’t get that answer until next December with the release of DUST TO DUST.

And as much as I probably should wait until closer to that book’s release, I don’t think I’ll be able to. Though I will try and wait until January. Especially as I just know there will be tears.

    Description…

If I Stay meets the movie Ghost in this first book in a teen duology about a teenage-girl-turned-ghost who must cling to the echoes of her former life to save the people she left behind.

Ashes to Ashes is author Melissa Walker’s sweeping, romantic, and emotionally rich story about the things that torment and tempt us, even from the Great Beyond. This book is perfect for fans of Die for Me and Imaginary Girls, and its breathtaking ending will leave readers anxiously awaiting the series conclusion, Dust to Dust.

When Callie’s life is cut short by a tragic accident, she expects to find nothingness, or maybe some version of heaven.

Instead, her spirit travels to the Prism, an ethereal plane populated by the ghosts she thought were fictional. Here she meets a striking and mysterious ghost named Thatcher, who is meant to guide her as she learns to haunt and bring peace to the loved ones she left behind.

However, Callie uncovers a dark secret about the spirit world: The angry souls who always populate ghost stories are real, dangerous, and willing to do whatever it takes to stay on Earth, threatening the existence of everyone she ever cared about.

As she fights to save them, Callie will learn that while it may no longer beat, her heart can still love-and break.

Published by Katherine Tegen Books, the print edition is 400 pages.

ECHO IN TIME is the second book in Author C.J. Hill’s Erasing Time series.

    Dots_Divider

I can’t wait to get the chance to read ECHO IN TIME when it releases on Monday. I love this series and I am anxiously awaiting the chance to continue it with this second book, which I’ve had pre-ordered for ages.

As I already spotlighted it for my Book Watch post the other week and I will be on the book’s tour in a couple weeks, I won’t go on and on and on. But I am seriously excited to find out what happens on Taylor and Joseph’s mission and to see just what consequences their actions have.

The description calls this sequel “action-packed and romantic” and I am very much looking forward to escaping into this world and finding out if that’s true. If real life isn’t too crazy next week I hope to be able to discover it then.

    Description…

I know I missed last week’s Book Watch: Releasing This Week post and I will very likely post and backdate it just so that I have a complete record on the blog of books that have released that I’ve pre-ordered. But I didn’t want to miss posting about this week’s releases, even if I am just a touch late in posting it.

While I’m still not reading, as I can’t seem to find an escape in books at the moment, I am desperately going to try and do so with FRACTURE ME this week. But we shall see. Life has given me a beating as of late, but I’m hoping that books will be able to once again be things that bring me joy.

For all of you who are able to find happiness in a good book or three, I hope there are some titles releasing this week that will do just that for you. And while there aren’t a ton of new releases this week, there are a few lovely eNovellas out this week that are definitely worth adding to your collection.

So I wish you all a happy book acquiring and reading week this week.

    line2

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

The week of December 17th is a super quiet week for releases but ECHO IN TIME is a book that I’m totally excited for. I loved the first book in this series, ERASING TIME, and I can’t wait to continue Taylor and Sheridan’s story in this sequel.

The description promises a mission to destroy the time machine that was responsible for them being transported into the future. But it also mentions that the actions taken may have serious consequences. And I’m so curious as to what those might be.

As little else is revealed about what happens in this next book in the series, I’m dying to find out for myself. I had so many questions after reading ERASING TIME and I hope that some, if not all, of those questions will be answered in this book.

I really want to know how Echo factors into this sequel, if he’s the reason the book is titled as it is. I’m also curious to find out if this story will be told from Taylor’s POV and whether Sheridan’s POV will be included or if the story will reveal things from Joseph’s perspective.

As I have no idea what to expect and I was so surprised by how different the first book was from what I anticipated it to be, I won’t even bother guessing and will just wait patiently – or as patiently as I can – for its release in just three weeks.

While I am also very interested in reading the other book releasing the week of December 17th, I’ve had ECHO IN TIME on my radar since the very moment I devoured ERASING TIME, it’s a book I’ve been anxiously anticipating for the past few months, and is the book that I think totally deserves to be in the spotlight.

SLAYERS Friends and Traitors Blog Tour: ‘Top Ten Things Every Slayer Needs’ Guest Post + Giveaway

    FireandIceSlayersBanner

I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of the blog tour for C.J. Hill’s SLAYERS: FRIENDS AND TRAITORS, the second book in the Slayers series, hosted by Fire and Ice.

When I first learned that C.J. Hill, the author of ERASING TIME, wrote a series about dragons and dragon slayers I couldn’t be more excited to check it out. I have always loved reading about these magical and powerful creatures, and the idea of stories about them, set in the present, sounded absolutely fascinating.

I knew I’d love the writing as I’d read and loved ERASING TIME – I did. I knew SLAYERS had to be action-packed based on its description – it most definitely was. I hoped the story would grab me right from the start – it did, that prologue was awesome. And I hoped it would be a captivating and fun adventure. It totally was.

For someone who is new to the series I am so glad that FRIENDS AND TRAITORS is out now and that I don’t have to wait to dive into this sequel. It looks even more awesome than the first book in the series and I can’t wait to find out what happens with Tori and Jesse and Dirk and Ryker.

But before I can do that, I have a super fun and incredibly helpful guest post from the author to share with you on the “Top Ten Things Every Slayer Needs.” You know… just in case you think you’re up to the task. While I may be able to keep a secret, that’s the only one of the ten must haves that I can say I have. I think being a Slayer is not in my future.

Anyway… in addition to the guest post there is also some information about both books in the series and the author behind the stories. There is also a giveaway for a copy of SLAYERS with its gorgeous new cover.

And if you’d like to check out the other stops on tour, the tour schedule is included at the bottom of this post. I’ll be updating the stops with direct links in case you want to read a few reviews, interviews, tens lists and guest posts.

But first let me turn the blog over to the very awesome C.J. Hill….

    Guest Post
Top Ten Things Every Slayer Needs

    by C.J. Hill

    1.

A superpower. Flying might be most people’s first choice—until they realize it’s really the flyers who have to go one-on-one with the dragon. The Slayers who can douse fire, throw shields up, or heal burns get to stay on the ground out of claws’ reach.

    2.

The ability to keep a secret. If parents knew that their teens were genetically driven to fight dragons, they would move their kids to remote, safe islands.

    3.

A counterpart. Slayers with the same power can sense things about each other and can tell where their counterparts are. It helps with fighting, but also has some unintended side effects. A Slayer knows when his/her counterpart is lying.

    4.

    Bravery. Dragons are involved.

    5.

Altruism. Superhero work doesn’t pay as well as you’d think.

    6.

The ability to duck away from fire is always a bonus.

    7.

Athletic ability. It takes some muscles to leap ten feet in the air or shoot at a distance. Luckily the Slayers are born with plenty of athletic prowess.

    8.

A cool watch phone to connect you to other Slayers.

    9.

A summer to train. It takes practice to work as a team.

    10.

    About C.J. Hill

    CJ Hill Photo

CJ Hill is a pen name for a YA author who is best known for writing romantic comedies. (Slayers will be her 18th published book.) Her writing has shifted away from the romantic comedy genre, so her editor thought a pen name would be a good idea. (New books will include: dangerous dragons, time travel to dystopian worlds, and flesh-eating beetles.)

Since the publisher refused to let her have the pseudonym : The Artist Formerly Referred to as Princess, she chose a name to honor her mother. CJ Hill was her mother’s pen name, or at least it would have been if her mother had published. Her mother wrote a few children’s books and a middle grade novel but was taken by cancer before she had fully learned the craft.

(Most writers’ first novels aren’t publishable. CJ Junior’s first novel wasn’t, but somehow was published anyway. Now, even though it is out of print, it remains forever available on Amazon, where it taunts her with its badness. This was another good reason to use a pen name.)

CJ Hill has five children, three of whom like her on any given day depending on who is in trouble. She has lived in Arizona for the last half of her life, but is still in desert denial and hopes that one day her garden will grow silver bells and cockle shells or maybe just tomatoes.

ACROSS A STAR-SWEPT SEA is the second full-length book in Author Diana Peterfreund’s For Darkness Shows the Stars series.

    Dots_Divider

I am super excited that ACROSS A STAR-SWEPT SEA is releasing this week and will be downloading to my Kindle on Monday Midnight. While I haven’t yet read the first book in this series that was based on Austen’s Persuasion I am desperately curious about this second book in the series that is based on The Scarlet Pimpernel.

I love that the author is calling her character the Wild Poppy in homage to the other story. I love that this story’s heroine is a spy who is really part of the aristocracy, much like that first book (and the Batman). And I’m just so curious what “darkest secret” that Justin Helo is keeping.

The description calls this adventure “thrilling” and from the sound of it ACROSS A STAR-SWEPT SEA will deliver on that promise. And even though I haven’t yet read the first book in this series, I may just have to dive into this book when it releases this week.

    Description…

Centuries after wars nearly destroyed civilization, the two islands of New Pacifica stand alone, a terraformed paradise where even the Reduction—the devastating brain disorder that sparked the wars—is a distant memory. Yet on the isle of Galatea, an uprising against the ruling aristocrats has turned deadly. The revolutionaries’ weapon is a drug that damages their enemies’ brains, and the only hope is rescue by a mysterious spy known as the Wild Poppy.

On the neighboring island of Albion, no one suspects that the Wild Poppy is actually famously frivolous aristocrat Persis Blake. The teenager uses her shallow, socialite trappings to hide her true purpose: her gossipy flutternotes are encrypted plans, her pampered sea mink is genetically engineered for spying, and her well-publicized new romance with handsome Galatean medic Justen Helo… is her most dangerous mission ever.

Though Persis is falling for Justen, she can’t risk showing him her true self, especially once she learns he’s hiding far more than simply his disenchantment with his country’s revolution and his undeniable attraction to the silly socialite he’s pretending to love. His darkest secret could plunge both islands into a new dark age, and Persis realizes that when it comes to Justen Helo, she’s not only risking her heart, she’s risking the world she’s sworn to protect.

In this thrilling adventure inspired by The Scarlet Pimpernel, Diana Peterfreund creates an exquisitely rendered world where nothing is as it seems and two teens with very different pasts fight for a future only they dare to imagine.

FRIENDS AND TRAITORS by C.J. Hill will be released in the U.S. on October 15, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Feiwel & Friends, the print edition is 400 pages.

FRIENDS AND TRAITORS is the second book in Author C.J. Hill’s Slayers series.

    Dots_Divider

I am totally stoked that a sequel was written for SLAYERS. I have just started reading it and I know I’m going to love being able to dive into this sequel, FRIENDS AND TRAITORS, later this week. I pre-ordered a copy for my Kindle but I have an ARC from the publisher so I may get the chance to start reading it prior to its release on Tuesday.

And while I read the description for this book awhile back when I first was invited to be a part of the tour, because I will be reading it this week I don’t want to spoil anything by reading it now.

But I hope that the Slayers were able to keep the dragon eggs from hatching and from falling into the wrong hands. I can’t wait to read about the battles and the love story. And I am keeping my fingers crossed that they survive to be a part of this second book in the series, something I plan on finding out in the next few days.

    Description…

The Slayers – teens who have powers to fight dragons—are back by popular demand in this high-octane sequel, now with a new cover package!

Tori is at a White House dinner party when she hears a horrifying sound: dragon eggs hatching. It means in less than a year, the dragons will be mature and dangerous. The Slayers are well-trained, but their group is not yet complete, and Tori is determined to track down Ryker Davis, the mysterious Slayer who has yet to surface.

What Tori doesn’t bargain for, however, is the surprising truth about her powers: she isn’t a Slayer after all, but a Dragon Lord, with a built-in predisposition to protect dragons, not kill them.
How will she overcome this to save the lives of her friends?

    Never Fade

NEVER FADE by Alexandra Bracken will be released in the U.S. on October 15, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Disney-Hyperion, the print edition is 512 pages.

NEVER FADE is the second full-length book in Author Alexandra Bracken’s The Darkest Minds series. The third full-length book, currently untitled, is slated for release in December 2014.

    Dots_Divider

I am heartbroken that I haven’t yet had the chance to read NEVER FADE, but am happy that I’ll have the finished copy in my collection when it releases this week. This book is my most anticipated release this week and I’m devastated that I didn’t get the chance to read the eARC before its release.

When I spotlighted this book for my Book Watch post I may have taken a peek at the description and it made me even more curious about Ruby and Liam. I want to know what secret Ruby’s been entrusted with and what happens on the mission she’s sent on. I want to know why Liam is no longer the “boy Ruby once believed was her future” and how come he won’t recognize her.

This book’s description makes me nervous about just what happened and what will happen and I haven’t even met both characters. But I really, really, hope to be able to during my mini-vacation later this month.

    Description…

Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. Now she must call upon them on a daily basis, leading dangerous missions to bring down a corrupt government and breaking into the minds of her enemies. Other kids in the Children’s League call Ruby “Leader”, but she knows what she really is: a monster.

When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet: leaving the Children’s League behind. Crucial information about the disease that killed most of America’s children—and turned Ruby and the others who lived into feared and hated outcasts—has survived every attempt to destroy it. But the truth is only saved in one place: a flashdrive in the hands of Liam Stewart, the boy Ruby once believed was her future—and who now wouldn’t recognize her.

As Ruby sets out across a desperate, lawless country to find Liam—and answers about the catastrophe that has ripped both her life and America apart—she is torn between old friends and the promise she made to serve the League. Ruby will do anything to protect the people she loves. But what if winning the war means losing herself?

I am so glad that it’s finally a somewhat quiet week for releases this week. And I believe the same is true next week – yay! I think I only have three books releasing this week on order, but I suppose I’ll find out if that’s true when my pre-orders begin to download on Monday night.

While I don’t have any of the “other books of note” on order, I like the sound of RECLAIMED. The description has piqued my curiosity but my hesitation about ordering it has been that I keep reading the character’s name as Jana Oliver and not Jenna Oliver when reading the description. Then I think it’s a book by Jana Oliver and get confused. Then I wonder if I’ll read the entire book calling the character Jana.

It sounds like a story that’s told by multiple POVs so I am interested in finding out if that’s true. but I might just wait and see how many books actually download this week before making another purchase.

As it is a fairly quiet week for releases I will keep this sign-off brief. Besides I have to get ready for my second day of sailing lessons, which promises to be a bit more challenging – smaller boat, no wheel, more expectations. *Gulp.*

Anyway… even though there aren’t a ton of new YA books releasing this week – that I’m aware of, anyway – I hope that you have one or two books that you’ve been waiting for to add to your collection. And if I’ve missed a few books that should be on my radar, I’d love to know!

    line2

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

    My Reading Pile #135

    MyReadingPileText

I really wasn’t expecting any books this week. I thought it was going to be a super quiet week on the pile both in terms of books read and books received, so I was totally surprised when a book showed up at my front door.

    My Reading Pile 135

[Credit for mailbox sharing goes to The Story Siren]

I received an ARC of SEKRET (Sekret #1) by Lindsay Smith from the super awesome folks at Macmillan. It was a total surprise – totally awesome – as this book looks super cool. I’d seen it on NetGalley and had every intention on grabbing an eARC just as soon as my eReview pile shrunk just a little, but having it in print is so much better.

Because I hadn’t noticed that the cover states “an empty mind is a safe mind” when seeing it online. And I hadn’t realized that this book was an “espionage thriller” with a dash of dystopia. I am now officially intrigued and hope I can get it on the reading pile in December. (It releases on April 1, 2014, so I have a little time.)

    Only Everything

I was also approved for Kieran Scott’s ONLY EVERYTHING on Edelweiss thanks to the very awesome publisher, Simon & Schuster, and I’m really excited to check it out. The cover looks amazing – I saw the reveal on Barnes & Noble’s blog (HERE) – and it makes me even more excited for this first book in the author’s new series.

And while it doesn’t release until May, after having read what the author says about her series in that post, I really want to dive in right now. But I will have to wait just a little while because this week is insane IRL. Which is why I’ve only added one book to the pile.

    And that is…

Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.

    (October 13, 2013 – October 19, 2013)

    line3

    Slayers

    add

The only book I’m adding to the pile this week is SLAYERS by C.J. Hill. While I have a copy for giveaway from the publisher for the tour I’ll be on for the sequel, FRIENDS AND TRAITORS, in just over a week, I purchased a copy to read on my Kindle.

And while I don’t have to read either book in this series for the tour, I very much want to. They sound awesome. And I love this author’s writing so I can’t wait to check this series out.

I haven’t read very many stories about dragons and dragon slayers – until recently I don’t think I read a single YA story with dragons – so I’m super excited to read one about modern day Slayers.

And while I plan on only reading this first book this week, due to all sorts of things going on IRL, if I get so caught up in the story’s world I may just have to read the sequel which I received from the publisher. We shall see…. But isn’t that cover amazing?!?

    The Description…

Dragons exist. They’re ferocious. And they’re smart: Before they were killed off by slayer-knights, they rendered a select group of eggs dormant, so their offspring would survive. Only a handful of people know about this, let alone believe it – these “Slayers” are descended from the original knights, and are now a diverse group of teens that includes Tori, a smart but spoiled senator’s daughter who didn’t sign up to save the world.

The dragon eggs have fallen into the wrong hands. The Slayers must work together to stop the eggs from hatching. They will fight; they will fall in love. But will they survive?

    line3

    Wishful Thinking Reads

Can I say every single book I have on my reading pile? Because I wish I could read all of those books.

If I had to choose one right now it would be PAWN (The Blackcoat Rebellion #1) by Aimee Carter. This book sounds totally epic. I love the author’s writing. And the idea of a twisted game, conspiracies and a rebellion makes me more than wish I could be reading this book right now.

    line3

    Those Left Behind

This week I have been the worst blogger ever. Aside from my epic fail moment about my upcoming blogoversary, I spent most of it working with my blog designer on getting new designs for various blogs and getting a couple covers designed. I then wasted time trying to navigate the copyright office online and then tested out Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing for my “The Cop and the… Vol. 1” stories.

I also lost quite a bit of time last weekend writing instead of reading and blogging, which makes me feel incredibly guilty. And I’d hoped to get some reading done last Saturday at the hair salon, but yeah… that didn’t go as planned. Plus, with a number of tours to prep for Rockstar Book Tours, I found that I had zero free time to read and barely enough time to blog.

As I am so behind, and I must, must, must read THE IRON TRAITOR this weekend, I only added the one book to the pile this week. I hope it helps. I doubt it will. And if I can just get over myself for five seconds I could probably catch up on a few reviews. There is no one but me saying that they have to be as elaborate as I make them. If I could just simply ramble my thoughts it would be so much easier. But I tried doing that last fall, and it didn’t quite work out. So who knows.

But I really hope to be able to catch up on a few things as this is the last week I have before I head out on a mini-break and then need to gear myself up for NaNoWriMo.

So I make no promises. But, as always, I am ever hopeful.

    line3

    NetGalley Pile Adds & Finds

I didn’t have time to hang out on NetGalley this past week, though I did sneak onto Edelweiss and request the title I was approved for. But in checking for this post I did find a couple that look interesting. One that I know I’m going to grab – NIL by Lynne Matson – I just haven’t quite yet. And they are…

NIL by Lynne Matson (Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, Mar 4 2014)

FIREBLOOD by Trisha Wolfe (Spencer Hill Press, Dec 17 2013)

BURN BRIGHT (Dark Star #2) by Bethany Frenette (Disney Book Group, Feb 25 2014)

SEVEN WONDERS BOOK TWO: LOST IN BABYLON by Peter Lerangis (Harper Collins UK, Nov 7 2013)

INSURGENT (Divergent #2) by Veronica Roth (Harper Collins UK, May 1 2012) **Not for US Reviewers**

As I already mentioned I was a total blogging and reading slacker this week. I am feeling so guilty right now, but even still, I’m just not feeling the urge to do much of anything but get some sleep. Though that’s probably because I should be studying.

I am also in another quirky reading mood and want to read something dark, something with Cat and Bones. But I’m falling too far behind with my YA reads to go off-pile.

While I don’t know what the reading week ahead holds, I will definitely be reading THE IRON TRAITOR this weekend. But beyond that, I am just hopeful I’ll be able to have a post up every day this week and that it won’t be complete gibberish. We shall see.

Sorry for such a short post this weekend, but I didn’t meet any new characters, didn’t travel to any exciting worlds and didn’t discover a new author’s writing that made me a fan for life. Which makes me so incredibly sad. But I guess when one doesn’t actually read anything, that’s what happens.

I just hope this past week wasn’t – and the week ahead isn’t – as unproductive for you.

    As always, happy reading!

If so, what’s in your reading pile this week?

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #138

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of August 20th-August 26th that I have pre-ordered.

    Asylum

ASYLUM by Madeleine Roux releases in the U.S. today, August 20, 2013, in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperCollins, the print edition is 320 pages.

I am a mix of excited and terrified for the release of ASYLUM by Madeleine Roux. I love the title and cover and I love that this story sounds every bit as creepy as the description hints it is.

But I’d taken one look at the photos in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and I haven’t been able to get anywhere near that book. So I’m a bit wary about this book that’s supposedly also a “photo-novel.” Which is why I opted to purchase the Kindle version. And which is why I have no plans to read it on my Kindle Fire.

I love horror in fiction. But the horrors of a real-life asylum are ones I am pretty sure I do not want to know about. And I think I’ll be able to do a good job pretending there is no reality to Dan, Abby and Jordan’s discoveries as long as I don’t see the pictures.

Because if I do, I have a feeling this book will give me nightmares.

I only recently learned of ASYLUM’s existence. It might have been during the only Epic Reads Tea Time Twitter Chat I managed to catch. But I added ASYLUM to my list of pre-orders and now I cannot wait to check it out.

    Let me rephrase.

I cannot wait to check out ASYLUM during the day. When it’s light out. When I’m not home alone. Of course my curiosity may get the best of me late one night….

    Flicker Burn

    addtogoodreads

FLICKER & BURN by T.M. Goeglein releases in the U.S. today, August 20, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Putnam Juvenile, the print edition is 352 pages.

FLICKER & BURN is the second book in author T.M. Goeglein’s Cold Fury series. No information is yet available about the release date for the third book in the series.

I can’t believe that the release date for FLICKER & BURN has arrived. Where has the time gone? While I received an ARC, I only just recently had the chance to dive back into Sara Jane Rispoli’s world. And I still have no idea how this second book in the series ends.

But I cannot wait to read the remainder from the finished version on my Kindle and find out just what happens with Sara Jane, Max, her family and even the Chicago Outfit. Maybe especially its leader.

I just wish I knew how long I am going to have to wait for the next installment, as I think this series is one that would be so perfect to read back-to-back-to-back. And I wish I knew just where the series was headed after FLICKER & BURN.

I am hoping that I’ll get the chance to finish FLICKER & BURN this week before next week’s insane release week begins. But if I don’t, I will definitely finish reading it before I start on one of those new releases. Even if reading it now will likely mean a long wait to be able to continue Sara Jane’s story.

    The Infinite Moment of Us

    addtogoodreads

THE INFINITE MOMENT OF US by Lauren Myracle releases in the U.S. today, August 20, 2013, in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Amulet Books, the print edition is 336 pages.

    Line_001

I believe I first saw THE INFINITE MOMENT OF US on NetGalley. But I didn’t request a review copy due to its incredible popularity. I did pre-order it for my Kindle, however. And I’m super excited to get the chance to read it.

As I already put this book in the spotlight for my Book Watch post I’ll be brief. But I cannot wait to meet Wren and Charlie. I can’t wait to find out if this story will be ultimately heartwarming or heartbreaking. And I cannot wait to learn just what has been written in the starts for both of them.

The description promises a story that is “sexy, romantic, and oh-so-true to life.” So I’ve set my expectations high and I cannot wait to see if this love story will surpass them.

    I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

It is a rather quiet week for releases this week. But it is one of those release weeks that I like to call the “calm before the storm” weeks. Because for each of the two weeks after this week there are a ton of YA books releasing.

I only have three books pre-ordered, but I plan on adding SLAYERS to my collection this week. I wanted to pre-order it, but was afraid that the eBook version that downloaded prior to release date would be the previously published version. And so I’ve been waiting until release date to add it to my collection.

And I’m not sure what happened with regard to SOULBROKEN (Legacy of Tril #2) by Heather Brewer. On Goodreads the August 20th release date still appears beneath the book, but the book is no longer in the line-up at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

While it won’t be added to my collection this week, I am hopeful a new date will be set and my pre-order will automatically update with the new information.

    Anyway…

With so few titles “of note” and so few releases I’m adding to the collection this week, I am hopeful of getting a little more caught up before the following weeks’ releases completely overwhelm my eReaders… and me!

Of course, if the reason I have so few titles on this list is because I’ve inadvertently forgotten them, then please leave a comment and let me know! Because there’s nothing worse than missing a release date for an awesome book that should have been on my radar.

And if you’ve had your eye on a few of this week’s releases, let me know that too. I’d love to know which books you’re most excited for that are releasing this week.

As ever, I wish you a happy reading and bookish acquiring week ahead!

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!
