Book Watch: Releasing This Week #160

    BookWatch_week

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of January 21st-January 27th that I have pre-ordered.

    Avalon

    addtogoodreads

AVALON by Mindee Arnett was released in the U.S. on January 21, 2014 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Balzer + Bray, the print edition is 432 pages.

AVALON is the first book in a new series by Author Mindee Arnett. The second and final full-length book in the series is entitled MERIDIAN. A prequel novella, PROXY, was released in December.

I love the sci-fi trend in YA as it’s allowed me to try different types of reads that I might have been hesitant to try in the past. Books like AVALON, which I decided to pre-order after I heard such amazing things about it.

While this is not my typical genre and space is not a typical setting in books I usually gravitate toward, the idea of mercenaries, corruption and a conspiracy piqued my interest. I can’t wait to meet Jeth Seagrave and learn more about what life is like for those in the star systems in the Confederation.

I am curious as to just what information he finds that is worth killing for. And I’m hopeful he will be able to gain his freedom.

AVALON now lives happily on my Kindle and I am hopeful of diving into this first book in the duology some time next month.

    Description…

A ragtag group of teenage mercenaries who crew the spaceship Avalon stumble upon a conspiracy that could threaten the entire galaxy in this fascinating and fast-paced sci-fi adventure from author Mindee Arnett.

Of the various star systems that make up the Confederation, most lie thousands of light-years from First Earth-and out here, no one is free. The agencies that govern the Confederation are as corrupt as the crime bosses who patrol it, and power is held by anyone with enough greed and ruthlessness to claim it. That power is derived from one thing: metatech, the devices that allow people to travel great distances faster than the speed of light.

Jeth Seagrave and his crew of teenage mercenaries have survived in this world by stealing unsecured metatech, and they’re damn good at it. Jeth doesn’t care about the politics or the law; all he cares about is earning enough money to buy back his parents’ ship, Avalon, from his crime-boss employer and getting himself and his sister, Lizzie, the heck out of Dodge. But when Jeth finds himself in possession of information that both the crime bosses and the government are willing to kill for, he is going to have to ask himself how far he’ll go to get the freedom he’s wanted for so long.

Avalon is the perfect fit for teens new to sci-fi as well as seasoned sci-fi readers looking for more books in the YA space-and a great match for fans of Joss Whedon’s cult hit show Firefly.

    Evertrue

    addtogoodreads

EVERTRUE by Brodi Ashton was released in the U.S. on January 21, 2014 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Balzer + Bray, the print edition is 368 pages.

EVERTRUE is the third and final full-length book in Brodi Ashton’s Everneath series.

    Dots_Divider

I already read EVERTRUE, but I’ve had it pre-ordered since long before then. And regardless of the fact that I have read it, have discovered how everything ends, I still had to add this final book in the series to my collection.

As I have read it and have very definite opinions on just how things ended, I don’t want to ramble on here for very long. Because I will let some key piece of information slip and that would not be at all good.

I loved the characters and world the author created in this series. Throughout the entire series there were many tears, angst-filled moments, and quite a few swoon-worthy ones, too. But the fact that this series had to come to an end after just only three books was the thing that devastated me the most.

While I won’t be reading EVERTRUE in the next few weeks, I do plan on reading the entire series again some day. I already miss Cole and Nikki… and Jack. So I’m thinking that “someday” will be someday soon.

    Description…

Now that Nikki has rescued Jack, all she wants is to be with him and graduate high school. But Cole tricked Nikki into feeding off him, and she’s begun the process of turning into an Everliving herself… which means she must feed on a Forfeit soon — or die.

Terrified for her survival, Nikki and Jack begin a desperate attempt to reverse the process using any means possible. Even Cole, who they expected to fight them at every turn, has become an unlikely ally — but how long can it last? Nikki needs to feed on Cole to survive, Cole needs Nikki to gain the throne in the Everneath, Jack needs Nikki because she is everything to him — and together, they must travel back to the Underworld to undo Nikki’s fate and make her mortal once more. But Cole isn’t the only one with plans for Nikki: the Queen has not forgotten Nikki’s treachery, and she wants her destroyed for good. Will Nikki be forced to spend eternity in the Underworld, or does she have what it takes to bring down the Everneath once and for all?

In this stunning conclusion to the Everneath trilogy, Brodi Ashton evokes the resiliency of the human spirit and the indomitable power of true love.

    The Rule of Three

    addtogoodreads

THE RULE OF THREE by Eric Walters was released in the U.S. on January 21, 2014 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR), the print edition is 416 pages.

    Dots_Divider

When I first took a peek at the description for THE RULE OF THREE I immediately added it to my list of pre-orders. It sounded kind of awesome. Absolutely chaotic, but definitely awesome.

I am just so curious as to how having a police captain as a parent and having a spy living next door will help Adam survive. I can’t wait to get submerged into this world where a viral catastrophe has taken out most, or all, electronics. And I am dying to find out just what happened to make everything shut down.

While I know I won’t get the chance to read THE RULE OF THREE this month, I am hopeful that at some point in early February I’ll get to add it to the pile.

    Description…

One shocking afternoon, computers around the globe shut down in a viral catastrophe. At sixteen-year-old Adam Daley’s high school, the problem first seems to be a typical electrical outage, until students discover that cell phones are down, municipal utilities are failing, and a few computer-free cars like Adam’s are the only vehicles that function. Driving home, Adam encounters a storm tide of anger and fear as the region becomes paralyzed. Soon—as resources dwindle, crises mount, and chaos descends—he will see his suburban neighborhood band together for protection. And Adam will understand that having a police captain for a mother and a retired government spy living next door are not just the facts of his life but the keys to his survival, in The Rule of Three by Eric Walters.

    Fragile Spirits Cover

    addtogoodreads

FRAGILE SPIRITS by Mary Lindsey will be released in the U.S. on January 23, 2014 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Philomel, the print edition is 320 pages.

FRAGILE SPIRITS is the second book in Author Mary Lindsey’s Souls series.

    Dots_Divider

I am so excited for the upcoming release of Mary Lindsey’s FRAGILE SPIRITS. I’ve been just dying to get back to this world the author created what feels like forever ago.

As I already spotlighted it for my Book Watch post the other week and talked about quite a few of the reasons why I can’t wait for this book, I am going to try to keep things short.

But I can say that I am so glad the wait is just about over. And I will say that while this second book in the series isn’t about Lenzi and Alden, I am just as thrilled for its release and for the chance to meet Paul and Vivienne. This sequel sounds every bit as amazing as the first.

And if all goes as planned I’ll be able to devour it this weekend.

    Description…

Paul has always known he was a Protector, fated to serve a Speaker who could hear the voices of spirits lingering after death and help those souls find peace.

Vivienne ignores the voices of the dead.

Paul has always followed the Protector’s rule book, preparing diligently for the day when he’d be matched with his Speaker and fulfill his destiny.

Vivienne never does what she’s told.

So when Paul is matched with Vivienne, they both find the pairing less than satisfactory. But a kidnapping, a malevolent spirit and power stronger than both of them may just prove that they are two halves of the same whole.

In a stunning story about the beauty of fate and the power of secrets, Mary Lindsey returns to the world of Shattered Souls with a breathtaking thrill-ride of a novel.

**Note from author: This book begins one month after Shattered Souls leaves off. Lenzi and Alden are featured in this book, but reading Shattered Souls is not a prerequisite.

    The Witch is Back

    addtogoodreads

THE WITCH IS BACK by Brittany Geragotelis was released in the U.S. on January 21, 2014 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 352 pages.

THE WITCH IS BACK is the third and final book in Author Brittany Geragotelis’ Life’s a Witch series.

    Dots_Divider

I am a little bit behind on this series but I just had to pre-order THE WITCH IS BACK, the third and final installment. I loved the first book, I own the second and now can’t wait to read these final two back-to-back. As both the second and the third books are from Hadley’s POV, it will be the perfect two-book read.

I did end up taking a peek at the spoiler-y description, but even with spoilers I can’t wait to read both books. I’m excited that this final story will have Hadley and Brooklyn clash and I’m super curious if it is because of Asher. But what I am most curious about is the price Hadley is going to have to pay for love.

As my reading schedule is a bit crowded at the moment, I am hoping to be able to dive into this series-ending book in mid-February for my Don’t Let It End Reading Challenge. But I plan on reading LIFE’S A WITCH just a few days sooner than that.

    Description…

When two gorgeous, popular witches clash over a man, it’s magical mayhem in this conclusion to the Life’s a Witch trilogy!

It’s been a trying year for teen witch Hadley Bishop—she led her coven into battle against the Parrishables and lost her mother in a surprise attack. Now that the Parrishables and their leader, Samuel Parris, have been defeated, Hadley is looking forward to a relaxing, love-filled summer with boyfriend Asher Astley.

Hadley’s summer plans take an unexpected turn though when she and her coven head off to a witchy summer intensive. Once there, Hadley immediately finds herself in a power struggle with Brooklyn Sparks. Like Hadley, Brooklyn is gorgeous and popular, but she’s also…Asher’s ex-girlfriend?!

As if this news isn’t enough to rattle Hadley, there are rumors of a rogue witch in the woods, and someone is playing dangerous pranks around camp. Hadley suspects that Brooklyn is behind the pranks, but is she willing to risk losing her friends and Asher to prove it? In this electrifying conclusion to the Life’s a Witch series, Hadley will discover that love is more powerful than any spell—but it comes with a price.

    ALittleTooHot

    addtogoodreads

A LITTLE TOO HOT by Lisa Desrochers was released in the U.S. on January 21, 2014 in eBook format. A paperback edition will be released on February 25, 2014 and an audiobook will be releasing on March 11th. It is currently available to order online at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by William Morrow Impulse, the print edition is 416 pages.

A LITTLE TOO HOT is the third book in Author Lisa Desrochers A Little Too Far series.

    Dots_Divider

I am so excited that A LITTLE TOO HOT released this week. I got the chance to read it early and it is my favorite book in the series. It was the perfect mix of sexy, nerve-wracking, heartbreaking and exciting and I’m so glad that the finished version has joined the previous two books in my Kindle collection.

As I have read it there is nothing to guess about. It’s awesome. And revealing anything more than what the description mentions is dangerous. But I am so glad that Sam got her own story/love story. I love, love, loved meeting the super sexy Harrison. I absolutely adored Sam’s friends, especially Jonathan.

And I will just say that I did not see that coming. What “that” is, however, I shall not reveal.

As I have already read and loved A LITTLE TOO HOT I will not be adding it to the reading pile in the coming weeks. But I definitely think this one deserves a re-read, so hopefully I’ll get a chance to do that some time this spring.

    Description…

This book is a stand-alone A LITTLE TOO FAR novel.

    If you play with fire…

Tossed out of college and cut off by her parents, Samantha West is in pretty dire straits. So when her rocker best friend hooks her up with a job dancing at a gentlemen’s club, who is she to turn it down? Plus, there are rules to dancing at Benny’s: No touching, keep your clothes on at all times, and never get closer than three feet. Unfortunately for Sam, her first private client makes her want to break every single one of them.

Harrison Yates is scorching hot, but he’s got a past that involves being left at the altar not too long ago. Sam is determined to make him forget about his ex, but when she makes her move, it flings her life into a spiral of chaos she never saw coming.

Because Harrison Yates isn’t who he seems to be. And his secret will probably get her killed.

I can’t believe I forgot to list the first episode’s release of THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS: FINAL ACT last week. I was so caught up with its tour that it seems I did not include it on my list of books I’d pre-ordered. Since I did miss posting about it and as it is releasing in serial format first, I think I’ll wait until it’s released in full before giving it my full ramble.

But I don’t think I missed anything else last week, and I don’t think I missed anything else releasing this week. Though, because I’m posting this a bit later than usual, I do have the benefit of having most of my pre-orders downloaded for confirmation.

Anyway… I can’t wait to check out AVALON, which will be a completely different sort of read for me. I’m excited by the fact that I have read two of the books I have on order so that I don’t have too many new additions to the TBR pile. And I am still anxiously awaiting the release of FRAGILE SPIRITS because I love Mary Lindsey’s writing and her Souls series.

But enough about me and what I’m excited about. I hope that there are a few titles you’re excited about that are releasing this week. And if there are, or if I have missed one or two “must adds” then leave a comment and let me know!

    blue_green_line2

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

    Best Book Boyfriends of 2013

Ack! Once again the rules require that I choose my book boyfriends based upon books that were not only released in 2013 but that I read in 2013. So unfair! That means I can’t choose Barron’s or V’lane from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. *sobs* And I can’t choose Austin from Talia Vance’s GOLD.

A few of last year’s book boyfriends made the cut this year. But there are also a few new adds to the list.

And, yes, some of those bookish boyfriends were from the same book. Who says there has to be just one bookish boyfriend per book?

A Few Other Bookish Boys I Love

I have so many book boyfriends from the books I read. Most of them are the bad boys, but a few of them happen to be good. And if I had just a little more time this week to create these top ten posts, I might have opted to do one list of Bad Boy Book Boyfriends and another of Good Boy Book Boyfriends.

But as I have way too many posts to create and so little time to get them done, for today I’m sticking with just the one list. However, I can’t pass up the chance to list just a few other bookish boys I adore.

Will of Jessa Holbrook’s WHILE YOU’RE AWAY

    Colt of Karsten Knight’s AFTERGLOW

Ethan of Chloe Neill’s HOUSE RULES and BITING BAD

Warner of Tahereh Mafi’s DESTROY ME

    Logan of C.J. Redwine’s DECEPTION

    Fenn of Lesley Livingston’s DESCENDANT

Jules of Amy Plum’s UNTIL I DIE

Kai of Wendy Higgins’ SWEET PERIL

Dante of Victoria Scott’s THE COLLECTOR and THE LIBERATOR

Finn of Jessica Spotswood’s STAR CURSED

And, of course, there are so many more… but this is supposed to just be a Top Ten List and with these extra boys I’m now up to twenty.

    Best Book Covers of 2013

Last year’s picks were all about the beautiful ladies. I’m happy to say that this year’s picks are a little more varied and interesting in addition to being visually stunning. And while I named quite a few 2013 covers in my post last year, not all of them ended up being on my top ten list due to the fact that I am really trying so very hard to keep it at just the ten.

I am not even going to begin to name 2014 covers that I think are gorgeous. I will leave that for next year. But I did have to share just a few peeks in gallery form of other amazing 2013 book covers that I loved.

Now, without any further ado, here are those…

    My Reading Pile #145

    MyReadingPileText

I received all sorts of surprise books in the mail this week. All of which I would love to add to the pile this week. One of which I will be adding. Because I just can’t wait…

    My-Reading-Pile-145

[Credit for mailbox sharing goes to The Story Siren]

I was not expecting any books in the mail this week, so when two envelopes showed up at my door on Thursday and two more were sitting in the mailbox on the same day, I was completely and totally surprised.

I received an ARC in some seriously wicked awesome packaging of THE WINNER’S CURSE by Marie Rutkowski, thanks to the very awesome folks at Farrar, Straus and Giroux BYR. I am so excited for this book’s release and can’t wait to read it. Hopefully in the next few weeks. I have this title as an eGalley, but because it looks so amazing in print I think I might just have to read the print version instead. Decisions, decisions….

I also received a title I hadn’t heard of before – HALF BAD by Sally Green – thanks to the very awesome team at Viking Juvenile. After having read the book’s description on Goodreads and the tiny excerpt on Amazon, I really can’t wait to check this book out. Modern day witches. Good and evil. A story that promises to be gripping. I’m sold.

And finally, I received an ARC of MANOR OF SECRETS by Katherine Longshore courtesy of the lovely folks at Point for the blog tour I’ll be on next month. I can’t wait to head back in time to 1911 to meet Charlotte and Janie and find out just what kinds of secrets The Manor is keeping.

I also received EVERTRUE by Brodi Ashton, a book that I’ve been dying to read, thanks to the unbelievably awesome Jaime of Two Chicks on Books. I almost broke my “no request” policy for print books from this publisher since I get so many eGalleys from them on Edelweiss. But I didn’t. And now I don’t have to since Jaime sent me her copy to read.

I did not go crazy on Edelweiss or NetGalley this week, though I did grab one title and was approved for another.

I tried to resist requesting any titles on NetGalley and Edelweiss this past week after having received so many eGalleys. But there were so many amazing titles on NetGalley I couldn’t resist requesting one.

Courtesy of Delacorte Press and NetGalley I was approved for an eARC of AND WE STAY by Jenny Hubbard. This books sounds absolutely amazing and I found myself immediately starting to read it when my copy downloaded to my Kindle. But as it won’t be releasing for a little while, I will try to wait until closer to its release date. But I have a feeling I might just be sneaking this one onto the pile this week.

Courtesy of William Morrow Impulse and Edelweiss I received an eARC of A LITTLE TOO HOT (A Little Too Far #3) by Lisa Desrochers. I’ve been checking repeatedly for this title’s availability and the second I saw it I grabbed a copy. After having read the sneak peek in the back of A LITTLE TOO MUCH I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this next book in the series. And while I won’t be reading it this week, I will be adding it to the pile next week.

    But for right now…

Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.

    (December 22, 2013 – December 28, 2013)

    Evertrue

    add

First up on the pile is EVERTRUE by Brodi Ashton. I have been dying to get my hands on this final book in the series since the moment I finished reading book two. And now that I have an early copy thanks to Jaime I can’t wait a single day to read it… I actually started reading it the moment I discovered it in my mailbox.

While I’m terrified about just how this series will end, I just have to read it now. I can’t wait. I have to know what happens with Nikki and Cole and Jack. I have a bad feeling that things won’t end happily for Cole Stockton. But I am ever hopeful. While I adore Jack, I just can’t help but like Cole more, and have ever since I first met him in the first book in this series.

The description talks about the power of true love, so I am fairly certain that this ending will favor Jack. But until I reach the last page of this book I will be keeping my fingers crossed for Cole.

And if all goes as planned I’ll have my answer on Saturday. Because there’s no way I’ll be able to set this book down until I know.

    The Description…

    A Breath of Frost

    add

Next up on the pile is A BREATH OF FROST by Alyxandra Harvey. I received an eARC thanks to the publisher, Walker Childrens, via NetGalley. And as I will be on the blog tour later this week I really want to get the chance to read it before my stop on Thursday.

I love, love, love Alyxandra Harvey’s writing. And I can’t wait to embark upon this new series by the author and meet Gretchen, Emma and Penelope. I can’t wait to step foot into this world of witchcraft, secrets and murder. I can’t wait to find out how Emma is connected to the murders. And I can’t wait to discover the author’s Regency London setting in this story.

If I finish the first read on the pile before I technically am supposed to start on this week’s pile, then I just might be able to begin reading A BREATH OF FROST on Sunday. I might even be able to finish reading it on the same day. And while I am excited about the prospect of devouring this book in a day, I am hoping that the ending won’t be too much of a cliffhanger as reading it just a bit early means that the wait for the sequel will be that much longer.

But I will definitely have this book read before my tour stop on Thursday.

    The Description…

In 1814, three cousins-Gretchen, Emma, and Penelope-discover their unknown family lineage of witchcraft. Beyond the familiar manicured gardens and ballrooms of Regency London, a dangerous, alluring new underworld visible only to those with power is now open to the cousins.

But unbeknownst to them, by claiming their power, the three cousins have inadvertently opened the gates to the Underworld.

Now the dead, ghouls, hellhounds-and the most terrifying of all: the spirits of dark witches known as the Greymalkin Sisters-are hunting and killing young debutante witches for their powers.

And, somehow, Emma is connected to the murders…because she keeps finding the bodies.

Can the cousins unravel the clues and mystery behind their heritage and power before their gifts are stripped away …or even worse, another witch is killed?

    Wishful Thinking Reads

As I mentioned above, I really, really want to read AND WE STAY by Jenny Hubbard. The story sounds tragic and heartbreaking, but the description also promises goodness and hope. And as it’s told in verse and prose, I’m so very intrigued to see what kind of connection I make with the story.

Since I don’t get much time off for the holiday this year I might not have time to add another book to the pile this week. But I am determined to make AND WE STAY more than just a wishful thinking read… even if reading it this week might just be a wish.

    line3

    Those Left Behind

As I was so late in posting last week’s My Reading Pile post and because I was taking a break from reading for awhile, I only had one short novella on the pile last week. Which I read. And loved. So I’m not technically behind on last week’s pile. Though I didn’t write a review.

I may end up trying to do that this week, but with the Top Ten of 2013 event this week, and much catching up to do with my end-of-year reads, I might not get the chance. But that remains to be determined. I am still somewhat of an optimist.

I’m just glad that I didn’t get too ambitious last week or I would be seriously behind on my reads. Of course it’s still very possible I’ll end up falling behind before the year is out. With this week’s pile and a new pile to start on next week, there is always a chance I’ll fall a bit further behind.

But, yes, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I won’t.

    line3

    NetGalley Pile Adds & Finds

I’d put in a request for AND WE STAY by Jenny Hubbard when I saw it on NetGalley earlier in the week when creating the previous My Reading Pile post. I couldn’t help myself. And I was totally stoked when I was approved for the title.

I find myself in exactly the same spot this week with the two Entangled Teen books up for grabs. I’ve resisted the urge to request them so far, since their release dates are just around the corner and I have both pre-ordered. But I may not be able to wait.

SALT by Danielle Ellison (Entangled Teen, Jan 7 2014)

WHERE YOU’LL FIND ME by Erin Fletcher (Entangled Teen, Jan 7 2014)

INSANITY by Susan Vaught (Bloomsbury USA Children’s Books, Feb 18 2014)

SHE IS NOT INVISIBLE by Marcus Sedgwick (Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, Apr 22 2014)

    line3

I am slowly getting back on track with my reading and posting. It hasn’t been easy as I am still not back to my version of normal. But I’m trying really, really hard.

I’m still spending way too much time devouring series on Netflix… I can’t seem to stand the quiet… but I have been able to read a few pages here and there. And I have been able to get a few thoughts together in order for me to create a blog post or two.

    It’s a start.

As this is a crazy week for many, with the holiday bisecting the week, I hope you are all able to find some time to read those lovely books you have. And if you’d like to share what your current reads are or what books you received for review or you discovered under your tree, I’d love to know. Just leave a comment or a link to your post. I’ll be sure to check it out.

    Happy holiday reading!

    Review: Everbound

    Everbound

EVERBOUND by Brodi Ashton will be released in the U.S. on January 22, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Balzer + Bray, an imprint of HarperCollins, the print edition is 368 pages.

EVERBOUND is the second full-length novel in Brodi Ashton’s Everneath series. The third book, due out in 2014, is as yet untitled.

    Line_001

***The Goodreads description is spoiler-y for Everneath***

    Goodreads Description:

Nikki Beckett could only watch as her boyfriend, Jack, sacrificed himself to save her, taking her place in the Tunnels of the Everneath for eternity — a debt that should’ve been hers. She’s living a borrowed life, and she doesn’t know what to do with the guilt. And every night Jack appears in her dreams, lost and confused and wasting away.

Desperate for answers, Nikki turns to Cole, the immortal bad boy who wants to make her his queen — and the one person least likely to help. But his heart has been touched by everything about Nikki, and he agrees to assist her in the only way he can: by taking her to the Everneath himself.

Nikki and Cole descend into the Everneath, only to discover that their journey will be more difficult than they’d anticipated — and more deadly. But Nikki vows to stop at nothing to save Jack — even if it means making an incredible sacrifice of her own.

In this enthralling sequel to Everneath, Brodi Ashton tests the bonds of destiny and explores the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love.

    ***

EVERBOUND is a riveting, heartbreaking and tension-filled story about love, sacrifice, determination and betrayal. It takes readers on an electrifying and danger-filled journey. It tests the characters’ strength and devotion and willingness to do whatever it takes to get what their hearts desire.

Nikki Beckett felt as if she lost everything when she lost Jack. As much as she wished she could change any one of the decisions she’d made that led her to the Everneath, led her to Cole, she was powerless to turn back the clock.

But she was not ready to give up. And she was not yet without hope.

Even if finding Jack would be almost impossible, she had to try. Because doing nothing was not something she could live with. And living without Jack was not living.

She just had to return to the Everneath. And she just needed to find Cole to do it.

Brodi Ashton’s EVERBOUND takes this story in an exciting new direction – one that’s just as suspenseful, heartwarming and heart-wrenching as the first book in the series, but one that is also action-packed, filled with deadly obstacles, difficult challenges and formidable foes, and has an even greater connection to the mythology.

The author demands more from her heroine in this second installment in the series. As Nikki searches for ways to save the love of her life, she must put her trust in someone she never imagined she could trust. She must find the emotional and physical strength to pass the Everneath’s tests. She must find answers to the Everneath’s questions, because choosing wrongly would mean almost certain death.

And she must never give up hope or give in to defeat. For Jack’s sake. For her sake. And even for Cole’s.

Switching between the present and the past, through Nikki’s memories and stories and through Cole’s, the timeline of the story is expanded. It allows for a look at both characters’ pasts that had not been previously revealed. And it allows Jack Caputo to be very much a part of this sequel.

While both books could be dubbed love stories, EVERBOUND is also an enthralling adventure. One that is fraught with danger, with a ticking clock, hidden agendas, twists and turns and a few surprises that lead to an ending that is no less shocking than that of its predecessor.

EVERBOUND is a must read for fans of the first book in the series, for readers who enjoy stories that are a mix of love stories, adventures and modern interpretations of classic myths, and for readers who love books with jaw-dropping endings that will leave them desperate for the next installment.

    Reviewer gives this book…

    Rate05

    On a personal note…

Even though I read it in the description, I really didn’t think I’d get to go on a journey with Cole and Nikki and their other two traveling companions. And I definitely didn’t think it would be as awesome as it was.

It was just as exciting as Dorothy and company’s travels through Oz, but way more deadly. It felt more like they were running through a gauntlet instead of trying to make their way through the labyrinthine passageways that were the Everneath.

I loved the author’s interpretation of the mythology. I loved how she incorporated those stories, those beliefs, into this one and how they shaped the world she created. I kept thinking, “I can totally see that!” and “Oh my gosh yes!”

And I seriously loved just how much Cole there was in this story. Even though much of the gut-wrenching heartbreak involved Jack, there were still moments that made my gut twist for Cole. And there were a lot of moments where I kept begging Nikki to trade her mortality for immortality and spend the rest of forever with Cole.

After doing what she needed to do for Jack, of course. Because as much as I adore Cole, I still like Jack.

There is just so much I want to talk about. About Cole’s feelings. About Nikki’s. About what happened in the Everneath. About what happened after. And especially what the heck happened at the end.

Because… oh… my… gosh. The end. There was this one thing I saw coming… sort of. This other thing I did not see coming… at all. And then there’s this third thing that has me asking all sorts of questions about what it could mean. Because I don’t have a clue. Not. One. Single. Clue.

    And it’s absolutely killing me.

But of course I can’t talk about any of that, because it would be so totally spoiler-y. And I wouldn’t want to spoil one second of this reading experience. Not even the part where….

All I can say is I’m so glad I’d read Neverfall so that I could learn more about Cole before I dove into this book. I’d loved him from the moment we were introduced in Everneath and I fell crazy in love with him in Neverfall. And that did not change in this book. Not even when….

Nope. Not going to reveal that.

Nikki’s unshakable devotion to Jack, on the other hand, made me want to throttle her. While I’m normally a huge fan of complete and utter devotion in a love story – a love without question, without doubt, without giving in to temptation – I so wanted her to be swayed to the dark side. So I was very pleased when….

    Oops.

While there wasn’t the same type of countdown clock in this story as there was in   Everneath, a clock was most definitely counting down. There was a time limit to this journey. Which made it that much more suspenseful.

And I loved the peeks at the past as seen through Nikki’s memories. They were sweet and romantic and funny and heartbreaking. For Nikki. For Jack. And for Cole.

I am literally dying for the next installment in this series. I want answers to my questions about that thing at the end that I have no idea about. I want to know who ends up winning at the very end, or if turns out that they all end up losing.

This is one series I just know will have at best a bittersweet ending and at worst an ending that will be an absolute tear-jerker. I have a bad, bad feeling I will be sobbing.

    Favorite passage…

Of course I have quite a few favorite passages. This is the Everneath series after all. And I would have loved to include my favorite passage about Cole. But as most of the heartbreaking ones that were non-spoiler-y involved Jack, I decided to cave and share one of those instead.

“How did you know to turn back?” I said.

With his head still down, he said, “I waited for you.”

“But it’s a race. Why did you wait for me?”

He lifted his head so that his eyes met mine. “I always wait for you.” He took a deep breath, my ankle still in his hands. “I’m always waiting for you.”

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #108

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of January 22nd-January 28th that I have pre-ordered.

    05

    Boundless

BOUNDLESS by Cynthia Hand will be released in the U.S. on January 22, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available online to pre-order in all formats at Amazon and in hardcover and eBook formats at Barnes & Noble.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 448 pages.

BOUNDLESS is the third and final book in author Cynthia Hand’s Unearthly trilogy.

    Line_001

I am both extremely excited and so sad that BOUNDLESS is releasing this week and that it will be living on my Kindle on Monday Midnight. This is an amazing series – one I’ve fallen in love with, shed tears over and angsted over and I can’t believe this is the final installment.

I don’t know when I’ll be able to say goodbye to this series, even though I am just so curious about what will happen to Clara when she heads to California. I’m nervous about this fallen angel who’s stalking her. And even more nervous about the battle against the Black Wings.

The description mentions “sacrifices” and “betrayal” and I really, really, really hope that a certain character is not the one who gets sacrificed or the one who does the betraying. But I suppose I’ll never know until I actually read this series-ending book.

Ah… if only I could say goodbye.

    The Archived

THE ARCHIVED by Victoria Schwab will be released in the U.S. on January 22, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Hyperion Books for Children, the print edition is 336 pages.

THE ARCHIVED is the first book in a new series of the same name. The second book in the series, currently untitled, is slated for release next year.

    Line_001

THE ARCHIVED sounds like an absolutely gorgeous and haunting read. Yes, the description calls it haunting too… but it does sound haunting. And I cannot wait for it to download this week.

The idea that the “dead rest on shelves like books” and that Keepers must make sure that these “Histories” don’t escape is absolutely fascinating. Though it sounds like an incredibly sad, lonely and dangerous job for Mackenzie Bishop to have.

I really want to dive into this novel that is described as “richly imagined” and “haunting” by this author who is an absolutely beautiful writer. And I am super excited to see how these Histories are erasing chapters and what Mac must do to keep the Archive intact.

And while I won’t get the chance to read it this week, I’m hoping to be able to sneak it onto the pile this month.

    Nobody

NOBODY by Jennifer Lynn Barnes will be released in the U.S. on January 22, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by EgmontUSA, the print edition is 400 pages.

    Line_001

I don’t know what hole in the sand my head was buried in that I hadn’t heard about NOBODY until just a month or so ago. Because it sounds so awesome. And I would have kicked myself if I hadn’t pre-ordered it for my Kindle.

I love the idea that there are these invisible “under the radar” young people that are turned into assassins by the Institute. And I can’t wait to meet Nix and Claire and see whether he disobeys orders and doesn’t “remove” her.

The description is a total tease as it makes me want to know just what Nix and Claire plan on doing to keep her alive. It makes me want to know why an untrained Nobody is so dangerous. And it makes me want to know just what direction this story will take – Is it one where the Institute hunts these kids? Is it a story of betrayal or sacrifice?

I must know. And I really hope to read this in February to find answers to all my questions.

    Everbound

EVERBOUND by Brodi Ashton will be released in the U.S. on January 22, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Balzer + Bray, an imprint of HarperCollins, the print edition is 368 pages.

EVERBOUND is the second full-length novel in Brodi Ashton’s Everneath series. The third book, due out in 2014, is as yet untitled.

    Line_001

I am totally stoked that EVERBOUND is releasing this week and that it will become a permanent part of my eBook collection. I love this series, I love the mythology, I love, love, love the characters. And I love this book.

Yes, I did read it early, so I know just what happens and oh my gosh it was awesome. But I’ll be rambling about that in my review on Tuesday so I won’t say anything more about that right now.

And as I talked about this book at length in my Book Watch post, I won’t go on and on. But I will just say that this sequel was as “enthralling” as the description promises. The journey through the Everneath and its labyrinthine passageways was suspenseful and exciting and was a story I could not put down.

Of course I plan on re-reading this book after its release. I’m not sure if much changed from the ARC to the finished novel, but even if nothing changed, I’d have to devour this one again. And, no, it’s not only because the wait for the next book in the series is totally going to kill me.

    Ravage

RAVAGE by Jeff Sampson will be released in the U.S. on January 22, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Balzer + Bray, the print edition is 400 pages.

RAVAGE is the third book in author Jeff Sampson’s Deviants series.

    Line_001

I have not yet read any of the books in the Deviants series, but I own the previous two and I just had to add RAVAGE to my collection. I don’t know if this is the final book in the series, but I’m hoping to have all books in my collection before I start reading it.

Because I just know I won’t want to have to wait between books to continue this story which sounds intense and action-packed. And while I haven’t yet met Emily Webb or the rest of her “packmates” I did take a quick scan of the description for this third book and it sounds just as awesome as both previous books in the series.

I can’t wait to get caught up on this series so I can witness the confrontation between the Deviants and BioZenith. I’m so curious to find out who’s involved in the mutations. Especially since the description mentions the answer is “far more sinister” than imagined.

I love that this series involves conspiracies and secrets and special abilities and I can’t wait for the chance to finally get to read it. If this is the final book I hope to devour this entire series this winter. If there is another book planned, I hope I’ll be able to wait until closer to its release to start reading.

Not sure if my willpower is quite that strong….

After last week’s post I was informed that SPLINTERED would not be available as an eBook on the 15th but that it will be available to download at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE this week. I am slightly skeptical… but I’m hoping.

But I did manage to snag a couple of print copies from my local Barnes & Noble last weekend so I’m so excited to have a pristine copy in my collection.

    Anyway….

There are five seriously awesome books getting added to my Kindle this week and I’m so excited for each of them. And even though I read one of the books early, I still plan on keeping all five on my TBR pile, because EVERBOUND is most definitely a TBRR.

I really hope to read THE ARCHIVED and NOBODY in the next few weeks and just may end up marathon reading the three books in the Deviants series. But I’m not sure whether I’ll have the courage to say goodbye to BOUNDLESS. I’ve already had to say goodbye to an absolutely amazing series – Angelfire – and with WITH ALL MY SOUL and A TOUCH MENACING releasing in the next few months, I don’t know if I can bear to say goodbye to Clara, Christian and Tucker.

    Goodreads description:

A thrilling new novella from the author of the Everneath series!

Jack is trapped for eternity in the Tunnels while Nikki has managed to evade Cole’s grasp . . . for now. But Cole is more desperate than ever to find answers about Nikki, his best chance for taking over the throne of the underworld. How did she survive the Feed? Can Cole find another Forfeit like her who can survive it too?

Cole’s quest leads him to the other side of the world, to a mysterious, dangerous society known as the Delphinians, whose price for information might be higher than Cole can pay—a price that could destroy Nikki. But when Cole attempts to steal the answers instead, his mission ends in disaster. Faced with centuries in a Delphinian dungeon, Cole is confronted with questions he’s been too scared to ask himself: Is he really obsessed with the throne—or is he obsessed with Nikki? And can she really give him a new beginning as the Everneath’s king . . . or will she instead bring about his tragic end?

NEVERFALL is an incredibly entertaining short peek into Brodi Ashton’s world of Everlivings and Forfeits. It’s told from Cole Stockton’s point-of-view and takes readers along for the ride as he attempts to learn Nikki’s secret of just how she survived the Feed.

It is the perfect length to help not only bridge the gap until EVERBOUND’s release, but to give readers a better understanding of just how Cole thinks and feels. About humans. About the ruler of the Everneath. About Nikki.

NEVERFALL, like EVERNEATH, alternates between the past and the present. This time it’s Cole’s past and present. Teasing just enough to whet the appetite, but still leaving readers with questions to bring to the second book in the series.

Filled with a mix of heart-stopping, swoon-worthy, nail-biting and heartbreaking passages, NEVERFALL will keep readers glued to the page and even more desperate for the next installment in the series. It will also make them incredibly glad they’ve never encountered a Delphinian Scholar.

    On a Personal Note…

I am not the biggest fan of novellas. They are often too short to give me anything but a tease. Or they are so disconnected from the main storyline that I don’t feel like it’s worth taking the time to read them. But that was NOT the case with NEVERFALL.

I knew I’d be reading this the second it released. I just HAD to see inside Cole’s… mind. I wanted to know exactly how he felt about Nikki. I wanted to see how much of a bad boy he really was. I wanted to learn just what his motivations were. And I wanted to find out if I was wrong for falling for him in EVERNEATH.

Well, I won’t reveal spoilers here, but I got ALL my answers. And I will just say that I knew I wasn’t wrong.

This short story gave me the perfect bite. It was just as awesome as I’d hoped it would be and it surprised me by giving me just a little bit more than I expected in the form of “The Delphinian Dungeons of Suck.”

I still shudder when I think of them. And what it could have meant for our “hero.”

I love how this leads right up to and overlaps just a little bit with EVERBOUND and explains Cole’s whereabouts. Something that Nikki doesn’t know, but I do. And I love, love, love getting to know Cole’s real name.

Nope, you won’t find that here. That you have to discover somewhere else… say, in NEVERFALL. Which is a MUST READ.

    Favorite Passage…

I actually had twelve passages I noted in this short eBook novella. Twelve. My most favorite one is spoiler-y. But then so are most of them. I do love this one though. Because it’s so very much Cole.

All I could see … all I could smell … was Nikki. The waves of her brown hair had the perfect symmetry of one of Mozart’s minuets. Her emotional layers had the depth of a full symphony.

All I wanted was to bathe in her harmony.
