    ***Spoiler-y for THE ETERNITY CURE***

Allison Sekemoto once struggled with the question: human or monster?

With the death of her love, Zeke, she has her answer.

    MONSTER.

Allie will embrace her cold vampire side to hunt down and end Sarren, the psychopathic vampire who murdered Zeke. But the path is bloody and long, and Sarren has left many surprises for Allie and her companions—her creator, Kanin, and her blood brother, Jackal.

The trail is leading straight to the one place they must protect at any cost— the last vampire-free zone on Earth, Eden. And Sarren has one final, brutal shock in store for Allie. In a ruined world where no life is sacred and former allies can turn on you in one heartbeat, Allie will face her darkest days. And if she succeeds, triumph is short-lived in the face of surviving forever alone.

    The Review

THE FOREVER SONG is an action-packed, heartrending, suspenseful and riveting conclusion to this incredibly addictive series. From the moment the story begins, readers will be on the edge of their seats awaiting what comes next, wondering who Allie will choose to be, whether Sarren will be victorious, and who, if anyone, will survive.

Author Julie Kagawa delivers an intense, nail-biting, emotional roller coaster in this final installment. Fast-paced and exciting, full of shocks and surprises, she once again captivates with her dark and gritty, epic adventure. And with each new twist and turn, each new heartbreak, she ensures that this story’s conclusion is anything but certain.

With the fate of the world on the line, Allie must reach Eden before Sarren or all will be lost. Her desire for revenge keeps her going. It also makes her reckless. And Sarren has every intention of using that to his advantage.

If Allie falls victim to the obstacles he puts in her way, there won’t be any hope of defeating him. So she’ll have to decide what she is willing to sacrifice – her humanity, her heart, her life or the life of someone she cares about.

THE FOREVER SONG is an unputdownable addition to the series. With its end-of-the-world setting, its inhabitants on the verge of total annihilation, a madman threatening what little that remains, and its unlikely heroes hoping they have what it takes to beat him, this final installment is even more heart-stopping, thrilling and spellbinding than the last.

And as the tension continues to build, leading up to the story’s climactic conclusion that leaves no loose ends, readers will be crossing their fingers and holding their breath, wishing for a happily ever after with each page turn.

For fans of the series or readers who enjoy action, adventure, vampires, zombie-like creatures, a post-apocalyptic/dystopian setting, characters that are easy to connect with, and exceptional writing, THE FOREVER SONG is a must.

Like In-N-Out Burger‘s infamous secret menu this one deserves my off-the-menu 6 star rating.

    On a personal note…

This was the perfect ending to a phenomenal series. And as much as I didn’t want to say goodbye to Allie or Jackal or any of the characters in this series, I couldn’t have imagined it ending in any other way than it did… not that I saw it coming.

Of course I don’t mean to imply that there weren’t any tears. Because there were. A lot of them. This ending wasn’t without heartbreak. And throughout the story there were all sorts of devastating moments that made my heart ache and made me tear up.

I want so much to talk about what happened in this third – and final – book in the series. But I can’t figure out a way to do so without revealing too much of what went down in book two.

I can’t talk about why Allie was such an easy pawn for Sarren. I can’t talk about whether or not I was right to adore Jackal. I can’t talk about just how evil Sarren was. I can’t talk about whether Allie fought for her humanity or gave in to the monster.

I can only say that Julie Kagawa is an amazing storyteller. She wrote an unforgettable series with characters I will forever love and hate. She gave me an ending that I am more than satisfied with. She put me on a roller coaster or three or ten in THE FOREVER SONG. And I love it all the more because of those highs and lows.

It was just so easy to dive right into this final book even though I always hate saying goodbye. My need to know what happened was more than my need to keep the characters alive for just a little bit longer. And I am so glad I found out.

Yes I wish there were at least two more books in this series. Yes I hope that a certain sarcastic bad boy character gets his very own novel or series. And yes, I would love to return to this world at some point in the future to see what’s going on with the characters.

But even if none of that ever happens, I will still count the Blood of Eden series among my most favorites. THE FOREVER SONG will be one of my favorite series-ending books. And Julie Kagawa will continue to reign as one of my top favorite authors.

For me this series is a total must read series. It checked all the boxes – vampires, battles, heartbreak, adventure, killer cliffhangers, a dark and fascinating world, characters with an edge, insanely good writing, and both characters and a plot that are so very easy to connect to.

    Favorite passage…

I have so many favorite passages in this final book in the series. Each incredibly spoiler-y. Most completely shred my heart. All of them amazing.

And while I can’t share any of those heartbreakers, this one definitely gives me chills.

“You long for oblivion, for an end to your eternal wandering. But you’re afraid of what comes after, that the evil staining your soul will send it to damnation. And so, you continue to live, to exist, in the hell you created, hoping to atone for what you have done.” Sarren chuckled….

Note: This review is based on an eARC received from the publisher in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    About Julie Kagawa

    Julie_Kagawa

Julie Kagawa was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn’t getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish and the odd eel.

To pay the rent, Julie worked in different bookstores over the years, but discovered the managers frowned upon her reading the books she was supposed to be shelving. So she turned to her other passion: training animals. She worked as a professional dog trainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full-time.

Julie now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where the frequency of shark attacks are at an all-time low. She lives with her husband, two obnoxious cats, one Australian shepherd who is too smart for his own good and the latest addition, a hyperactive Papillon puppy.

    bookwatch

There are a few books I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of the week of April 15th, but the book I am most in love with is THE FOREVER SONG by Julie Kagawa. I did get the chance to read it early, so I know how this amazing series concludes, but it’s still my most anticipated release that week.

The ending of THE ETERNITY CURE nearly killed me. Wondering exactly what was going to happen to a certain character made me all sorts of anxious for all those long, long months until I got my hands on this final installment. And while I won’t say what did happen or how this series comes to its end, I will say that it was perfect. Abso-freaking-lutely perfect.

Oh… and yes there were tears.

As I have read this book I can’t guess what happened based on what the description reveals. Because I know what surprises Sarren has left for Allie, Kanin and Jackal. I know what happens on the trail to Eden. And I know what that “brutal shock” is that the description teases and just how dark those days are for Allie.

I can’t believe that this book was over four hundred pages. It is a super quick read, packed full of action, suspense, heartbreak. It contains all the magic that is Julie Kagawa’s writing. And while seeing this series end makes me sad, I had all the love for this finale.

So while I am excited about all five of those other awesome releases coming out the week of April 15th and there are a few more books I’m also looking forward to reading, THE FOREVER SONG has been the book I have pined for the longest, it’s the series I love the most, it’s an author who never fails to amaze and these characters are ones that will forever have a place in my heart.

Which is why it is the book to watch this week… or any week for that matter.

    What about you?

Are you as in love with the Blood of Eden series as I am? Are you just dying to find out what happens with Allie, Kanin, Jackal and Sarren?

Are you heartbroken that this series is ending and that the adventure will end one way or the other for each of the characters you’ve grown to love or love to hate?

And do you plan on reading this the instant you get your hands on a copy or will you try and wait to prolong the inevitable goodbye?

My Favorite Quote from… THE FOREVER SONG

    FAVORITE

I debated whether or not to reveal a quote from THE FOREVER SONG for today’s “My Favorite Quote from…” post. Especially as the quote that is my most favorite of them all is one I can’t possibly reveal as it’s a mega spoiler. But oh my gosh it’s so amazing.

And while I will be reviewing this very, very awesome series-ending book, as I am posting it for the book’s tour, it won’t be for ages.  So I decided that I just had to share a favorite quote, even if it isn’t my most favorite one.

By way of introduction (a recap)…

The point of this feature is to share my favorite quote (or one of the many favorite quotes I have) from a recent read and share why it is a favorite, which will give me the chance to ramble just a bit about a book that I may not get the chance to review. And even if I opt to review a title, I still might create a “My Favorite Quote from…” post because, while most of my reviews do include a favorite quote it’s only just one of many and I don’t typically get to talk about the many reasons why it is a favorite.

    divider700

    My Favorite Quote

“You know it’s the end of the world when Jackal starts making sense.”

There were three heart-shredding quotes I would love to have included in this post, but as I can’t share any of them without revealing too much, I thought I’d share this quote, which was also a favorite, because a) it’s about Jackal and b) it made me grin.

It was also from this really great scene that involved… well hmm… nope, too spoiler-y.

From the moment I was introduced to Jackal I loved him. Even when he was being evil, insufferable, obnoxious, I adored him. He made me roll my eyes more times than he made Allie bear her fangs. But that is all part of the charm that is him.

In THE FOREVER SONG he took over as my favorite male character – sorry Kanin. And it was possibly due to the fact that he was the most practical and made the most sense… though if I’m being completely honest with myself, it was because he was the most charming, maddening, frustrating.

I would also have loved to share what Jackal said that prompted that quote, but that, too, is spoiler-y. I can say that it involved words and phrases like “bleeding heart” and “uptight stick in the mud” and nailing “bloodbags to walls.” And I can say that what he said did make a whole heck of a lot of sense.

So, while some of those heartbreakers that Author Julie Kagawa is a master at writing and delivering are my most favorite ones – because I love that emotional roller coaster – it’s quotes like these that just give a book that extra something.

    But that’s what I think…

    What about you?

If you’ve read THE FOREVER SONG, was it lines like this, lines that make you smile, that are your favorites? Or are your favorite quotes ones that break your heart into an infinite number of pieces? Or are they ones that make you smile through the tears?

Was your favorite the quote that talks about time not mattering or the one that speaks of regrets? Or perhaps the one that talks of forever, or of oblivion, or of darkness?

Or do you have so many favorite quotes from this final installment in the series that you couldn’t possibly pick just one?

    Review: The Eternity Cure

    The Eternity Cure

    addtogoodreads

THE ETERNITY CURE by Julie Kagawa will be released in the U.S. on April 30, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Harlequin TEEN, the print edition is 448 pages.

THE ETERNITY CURE is the second book in author Julie Kagawa’s Blood of Eden series. No information is yet available about the third book in the series.

    Line_001

    Goodreads description…

Allison Sekemoto has vowed to rescue her creator, Kanin, who is being held hostage and tortured by the psychotic vampire Sarren. The call of blood leads her back to the beginning—New Covington and the Fringe, and a vampire prince who wants her dead yet may become her wary ally.

Even as Allie faces shocking revelations and heartbreak like she’s never known, a new strain of the Red Lung virus that decimated humanity is rising to threaten human and vampire alike.

    Line_001

THE ETERNITY CURE is the electrifying and wildly entertaining second book in author Julie Kagawa’s Blood of Eden series. Darker, grittier and even more suspenseful than the first, this sequel amps up the action, danger and tension levels, making this an intense, edge-of-your-seat read.

When Allison Sekemoto set off in search of Kanin, his rescue was her only goal. Still struggling with her humanity in this violent and ruthless world where lawlessness abounds, Allie fights to hang on to who she was before she became a predator. But when survival is dependent upon the need to feed, killing is sometimes her only option.

And as her journey leads her farther and farther away from the one thing that keeps her human, the price for Kanin’s safety may be steeper than she ever imagined.

Julie Kagawa has delivered yet another gripping and highly addictive installment in this series. She puts her heroine, Allie, in even greater danger as she attempts to save Kanin from his vicious and bloodthirsty captor, Sarren. She adds a new threat to this already perilous world that is struggling to survive. And she sets it all against a ticking clock, making this read a nail-biter.

The author does a brilliant job of mixing the elements of an epic saga, gritty dystopian and dark paranormal/urban fantasy with a touch of horror in THE ETERNITY CURE. Her characters are interesting and engaging, whether likable or unlikable, and her story captivating from beginning to end.

This second book in the series doesn’t suffer from sophomore slump – it is even more thrilling and action-packed than the first. It doesn’t serve as a bridge – the story could stand on its own. The author didn’t let the world-building suffer – if anything, she expanded upon it.

And while the young adult genre may be flooded with stories of vampires and zombie-like creatures set in a post-plague world, Julie Kagawa’s story and series sets itself apart with its diverse and appealing characters, its exhilarating adventure and the imaginative spin this author brings to each of her stories.

With surprising twists and an even more surprising ally, dangerous new enemies and even deadlier threats, and a betrayal that could cost her everything, Allie’s quest to save her creator in THE ETERNITY CURE is an incredibly exciting adventure with a shocking cliffhanger ending that will keep readers riveted.

    Reviewer gives this book…

    06menu

Like In-N-Out Burger‘s infamous secret menu this one deserves my off-the-menu 6 star rating.

    On a personal note…

Oh my gosh this book was so wicked awesome. I LOVED every second of it. It was that good. Scratch that. Great. Scratch that. Amazing.

I did not think Julie Kagawa could top what she wrote in THE IMMORTAL RULES. I loved that book and I was so sure that the follow-up couldn’t get any better. But oh my gosh it did. By a lot.

THE ETERNITY CURE was so off-the-charts good that there are no words to adequately describe just how exciting it was to read. How riveted I was to the page as Allison set off on a quest to find Kanin. How unputdownable it was as the story unfolded. And how absolutely torturous that killer cliffhanger ending was.

Nope. No words…. Exciting. Riveting. Unputdownable. Torturous. I’m not counting those as words. Because they don’t even begin to paint a picture of just how awesome this sequel was. Or how desperate I am to get my hands on the next book in this series.

The description is pretty vague about Allison’s journey to find Kanin. It doesn’t reveal whether or not she makes the journey alone or whether she has a traveling companion or two. So I’m going to try to be just as vague when talking about this book so as not to reveal spoilers.

But what I can talk about – one of the elements in this story that I love, love, loved – is that this already dark world got even darker. A world of humans and vampires that was barely hanging on is now potentially on the verge of extinction due to a new outbreak and contagion.

I’d called the world in THE IMMORTAL RULES grisly, but the grisly in that book doesn’t hold a candle to just how grisly things got in this one. Dark. Grisly. Chilling. Violent. Heartbreaking.

Yes, somewhere amidst the chaos, between the action-packed battles and chases, the race against the clock to find Kanin, the encounters with the Bleeders and Molemen, there were moments that were so unbelievably heartbreaking.

Of course I won’t reveal whether it was just my heart that was broken or whether it was one or more of the author’s characters who suffered a broken heart, too. That little tidbit of information shall be my secret for now.

But there’s so much more to this novel than just darkness and bloodshed. There is plenty of that, but that’s not all that THE ETERNITY CURE delivers. There’s suspense. Tension of the nail-biting variety. A journey that is once again epic. Characters that are interesting and challenging and likable and detestable.

And if I’ve somehow given you the impression that this book is all doom and gloom, let me just add that there are also moments that are incredibly sweet and tender. Moments that will make your heart skip a beat or two.

So, yeah, this book has a little bit of everything and a whole lot of the stuff of awesome. Though that ending did kill me. Not only because of what happened but because it made me so desperate to find out just what comes next and gave me no way to do so.

    Line_001

    Favorite passage…

There are three amazing passages I want to include here. And much to my surprise, they’re all Allie and Zeke passages. Given just how much I adore both Kanin and Jackal, it was a complete and total surprise when I narrowed down my very most favorite passages to those three.

Of course choosing one is nearly impossible. Though I suppose I should choose the shortest one as opposed to those longish ones that reveal perhaps a bit too much.

I felt him shift in my arms, holding me tighter, tucking my head under his chin. “Only death will take me away from you, vampire girl,” he whispered. “And even then, I’ll watch over you from wherever I end up.”

The Eternity Cure Blog Tour: Character Post on Kanin + Giveaway

    TheEternityCure_Button1

I cannot believe I was chosen to be a part of the tour for THE ETERNITY CURE by Julie Kagawa. As I’d only recently been introduced to the series – what took me so long? – I never thought I’d get picked to be a part of this awesome event. AND…

I never thought I’d get to not only be a member of TEAM VAMPIRE, but that I’d get the opportunity to create my very own post about my most favorite character in the series… yes, you guessed it… KANIN! A character I adored from the moment Allison first encountered him in the tunnels. A character who I loved after what he offered to do, and did, for Allison.

And a character who became even more unbelievably amazing in THE ETERNITY CURE. Yes, I did get the chance to read it. I picked it up immediately after finishing THE IMMORTAL RULES because I just couldn’t put the series down. And while I didn’t think I could like him any more than I did after reading book one, I could. I did. I do.

So…. I am totally stoked – not to be confused with staked – to be TEAM VAMPIRE and to share my love of this series and this author by writing a post about her character KANIN. Which is below… just following some details about the books and author and places you can find them all online.

And if you haven’t yet checked out the BLOOD OF EDEN website, be sure to stop by for all sorts of information about the series, including – but definitely not limited to – character bios, the world of Blood of Eden, all you could ever want to know about Red Lung Disease, and super fun character quotes.

    Julie Kagawa About Julie Kagawa

    Dishing on Kanin…

For those of you who haven’t “met” Kanin in THE IMMORTAL RULES, I thought I’d start off with just a little bit of an intro…. OH, WAIT!!! Before I forget…

There may be one or two slight spoilers about Kanin’s role in Allison’s life in this character post. So, if you don’t want to know anything beyond the Goodreads description about how Kanin factors in, skip this part of the post and head straight down to the giveaways. But there will be no real spoilers beyond what is revealed in his character bio from the series website or in either book’s description.

    So… who is Kanin?

Kanin is a Master vampire. One of the few vampires left who has the ability to turn a human and create a new vampire. In this dark, blood-thirsty world that Allison Sekemoto lives in, even vampires aren’t immune to the after effects of the Red Lung Disease. So even a Master vampire can’t always successfully turn a human. Which is why Kanin’s offer to turn Allison was a huge risk.

Being such a powerful vampire would normally have earned Kanin a city to rule over as Prince. A place with plenty of lower level vampires to do his bidding, a place where humans are kept as Pets and a place with an unending source of blood to make his immortality far more enjoyable than the one he’s chosen to… live.

But Kanin is not like every other Master vampire whose only interest is getting and maintaining power. He has other interests… goals… secrets… ones I’ll leave to him and Allison to reveal within the story. My lips are sealed.

Kanin is also a teacher. A mentor. An insanely good fighter. He’s more than a little bit cryptic, but he reveals important information when he needs to. And he has created quite the devoted student in Allison.

What do we know about Kanin?

Aside from the fact that he’s a Master, he’s Allison’s sire, he has more than a few enemies and even more secrets that he’s keeping, he has mad skills in the fighting department, he is an incredibly patient teacher, he’s way older than he looks, and he makes for one seriously awesome ally?

Aside from all of that, he’s kind of hot.

You don’t believe me? Well, according to his bio, which I’ve included below, he has “piercing black eyes” and a “tall, muscular form.” Oh, and he’s among “the most ancient and powerful of his kind.” If that doesn’t scream hot, I don’t know what does.

And while I may have learned just a bit more, having read both books in this series, it’s probably best I don’t reveal what else I know about Kanin… like what he is looking for, what he’s done that has made him so many enemies, who else he has a connection with other than Allison, and just what he’s willing to risk to keep her safe.

So…. I suppose I have to add brave to that list. But I probably should stop here, or else I might just reveal one or two things I learned about Kanin in THE ETERNITY CURE. Things that may make you question just why I am Team Vampire.

    Why should we like Kanin?

Well there’s that whole brave, powerful, Master vampire thing he’s got going on. Some may like him just because he is an immortal. (Team Vampire forever!) Some may like him just for his looks. (I’m not that shallow… okay, well maybe yes I am.) Others may like him just because of what he did for Allison. (My hero!)

And others (me, me, me) like him for his rather awesome quotes. Such as…

“And you, little wildcat, I suspect you have claws you wouldn’t hesitate to use. I find I am in no mood for another fight, so consider yourself lucky. You met a heartless, soulless bloodsucker and lived. Next time, it might be very different.”

    or…

“We are vampires…. It makes no difference who we are, where we came from. Princes, Masters and rabids alike, we are monsters, cut off from humanity…. [W]e are forever separate. Damned. Alone…. Will you choose to become a demon with a human face, or will you fight your demon until the end of time, knowing you will forever struggle alone?”

    Why do I like Kanin?

Because he gave Allison a choice. Because he saw something in her that made him want to take a risk. Because he didn’t abandon her when he so easily could have. Because he never claimed to be anything other than what he was – “a monster.”

And while he may have been a vampire of few words, the words he did utter were ones that just kind of stuck with me.

Plus, his ability to handle a blade… and the whole hotness thing… were most definitely qualities I put in the “win” column.

    ***

But if you want to learn more about Kanin, you should totally meet him in THE IMMORTAL RULES and follow it up with THE ETERNITY CURE where things are a little bit darker and a lot more dire for him.

And if you just can’t wait, here’s the short bio from the series website…

Allie’s sire–the vampire who turned her–is one of the Masters, the most ancient and powerful of his kind. His piercing black eyes, tall, muscular form and calm, quiet demeanor make for one ominous specimen of immortality. He is a patient but demanding teacher who keeps his secrets close.

… and a few parting words from Kanin that drive his earlier point home.

    Goodreads description…

To survive in a ruined world, she must embrace the darkness…

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a walled-in city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten. Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred ofthem—the vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself dies and becomes one of the monsters.

Forced to flee her city, Allie must pass for human as she joins a ragged group of pilgrims seeking a legend—a place that might have a cure for the disease that killed off most of civilization and created the rabids, the bloodthirsty creatures who threaten human and vampire alike. And soon Allie will have to decide what and who is worth dying for…again.

Enter Julie Kagawa’s dark and twisted world as an unforgettable journey begins.

    Line_001

THE IMMORTAL RULES is an incredibly imaginative, dark and gritty, and immensely entertaining story set in a future that is bleak and in a world that is brimming with violence and on the verge of collapse. A world where vampires control the cities. Where humans either choose to serve them or suffer the consequences of choosing independence. And where survival is not much more than a dream.

It is an epic adventure that follows Allison Sekemoto as she at first fights to survive as an Unregistered human in a world where only Registereds are given the means to survive and then as she struggles to come to terms with the monster she has chosen to become.

Forced to leave New Covington, Allie must venture out into the world beyond the Fringe, navigate its unfamiliar, desolate and dangerous landscape, and face challenges far greater than any she could have ever imagined.

Julie Kagawa has once again taken her readers on a journey in THE IMMORTAL RULES. But this time the setting is more ominous, the world more devastated, the future more hopeless, and its residents more vicious.

And in this grim and frightening reality, where most of the population, both human and vampire, have been wiped out by the Red Lung disease, the author has introduced threats beyond those of starvation and illness and the violence that accompanies them. She has created monsters more terrifying than vampires. And she has offered up only the remotest glimmer of hope for salvation.

Her heroine, Allison Sekemoto, is brave, stubborn, compassionate but realistic, and fierce but likable. There are a broad spectrum of characters to connect with, to like, to despise, to root for, to cringe away from, and to both respect and detest all at once. And with enemies that range from the terrible to the grotesque and allies that are both obvious and unlikely, there is no shortage of creativity and imagination when it comes to character development in this story.

With each turn of the page, the story will draw readers deeper into this dark and disturbing world. A world that is equally as fascinating as it is horrifying. A cruel and cutthroat world that readers might wish they never entered, but one they’ll never want to leave.

Exciting, chilling and heartbreaking, THE IMMORTAL RULES will hold readers captive from start to finish and leave them anxiously awaiting the sequel.

    On a personal note…

THE IMMORTAL RULES was amazing. With a capital A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. That’s it. What else is there? There is really no other word I could utter that would express what I felt about this book any better than that one. Seriously.

Should everyone read this book? Yes. So there’s no need for me to say anything else about it.

Of course I have a ton of things I could say about this book, its characters, the world, the adventure. And I suppose I should say a few more things here. These are supposed to be my thoughts after all.

    So….

Did I love the world? Oh heck yes. While I thought I was over the whole dystopian/post-apocalyptic type of setting, clearly I wasn’t. Or at least not it when it’s Julie Kagawa’s version.

She painted a very dark and gritty picture. She created a chilling, danger-filled world with innumerable threats. Disease, hunger, violence. She created a broad range of characters to fill her world. Vampires. Rabids. Mole men. Pets. Registereds. Unregistereds. Fanatics. Traitors.

She took me on a journey.

One of my favorite aspects of Julie Kagawa’s stories is the journey she creates for both her characters and readers. And the one in THE IMMORTAL RULES is no exception.

It was an epic adventure. One that took her character, Allison Sekemoto, through different settings. Many of them hostile.

And on this adventure we were introduced to all sorts of different characters. Some good, many of them evil. Some likable, many of them detestable.

Going on this journey allowed her character to develop in different ways than she would have with the entire story taking place in New Covington. It definitely allowed Allie to experience different things. Become a different… person.

And while I missed Kanin, a character I liked from the moment we were introduced, I loved getting to meet Ezekiel Crosse. And while I was sad about what happened to a certain group of Unregistereds, I loved getting to meet the new Allie who I actually liked a lot more than the old one. She was just as stubborn, but way more kick-a** and way less frustrating.

Had Allison never left the city she’d called home, I would have never had the chance to meet the very maddening and even more intriguing Jackal, the Raider King of Old Chicago.

I absolutely loved this story. Its darkness. Its grisly reality. Its characters, many of whom showed incredible growth. Characters who are all very memorable. Its ability to transport me to its devastated world in its scary and violent future.

And contrary to what I said at the outset, about how just one word – amazing – is sufficient to describe THE IMMORTAL RULES, I think awesome, epic, thrilling, exhilarating, gripping and fan-freaking-tastic are also words I’d use.

    Favorite passage…

I actually had four favorite passages. One was a quote from Allie when she was talking to the rabids. Two involved Kanin, but one was way too long and the other too short. So I decided to go with this one, which is only slightly spoiler-y if you haven’t read the description.

He gave my hair a final, gentle tug and turned away. I watched him go, Hunger and longing and that strange, squirmy feeling twisting my insides. Crawling into my tent, I pulled the blanket over my head and tried to sleep, to forget Ezekiel Crosse. His touch. His warmth. And how badly I wanted to sink my fangs into his throat and truly make him mine.
