Random Thoughts: Black Friday for Book Junkies

In the United States the holiday weekend for Thanksgiving is seen for the Black Friday shopping mania as much, if not more than, Thanksgiving itself. Although not one who has ever partaken of the madness, there are some sweet deals out there for book lovers. And not all require an early rise or a potential stampede outside a mall.

Here are just a few of the Black Friday deals that might appeal to the book addict.

    1. Kindle 2 for sale on Amazon.com for $89. According to PC World Amazon’s Facebook page announced that at 9 a.m. Pacific Standard Time on Friday, in one of their “lightning deals” they will be selling the Amazon Kindle 2nd Generation (not the current version, so it’s 3G only) for $89. For those who don’t yet have an eReader this is a great opportunity to test out the device without too much of a dent in their wallets. But as it is a “lightning deal” be ready to click buy pretty fast before they run out. PLUSES: It’s cheap. No tax and free ship. DRAWBACKS: It’s not the latest model – not as light, not graphite, not wifi capable. Limited quantities are available.

    2. Nook for sale at Best Buy for $99. According to PC Magazine Barnes & Noble’s Nook will be available at Best Buy for only $99 – the wi-fi model only – in their “doorbuster deal” sale. According to the circular this will be at a $50 discount from the normally priced device at $149.99. PLUS: It’s fairly cheap. DRAWBACKS: With tax it’s over $100. Best Buy hands out tickets at 3 a.m. and the doors open at 5 a.m. Limited quantities are available. Color version will be out soon.

    3. Kobo for sale at Borders for $99.99 without wi-fi and $119.99 with, according to Laptopmag.com. PLUSES: Borders is less likely to be slammed. Does not specify a limited quantity sale. Depending on the store there may be color options. DRAWBACKS: Kobo is not as popular a reader. With wi-fi it’s the more expensive than the Kindle or Nook. With tax it’s over $125.

    4. Sony Pocket Edition and Sony Touch Edition for sale at Borders. The pocket edition at $149.99 is $30 off and the Touch edition at $199.99 is also $30 off. (Both are also currently available on sale at SonyStyle.com at these prices. And if you trade in an any brand eReader you get a $75 trade-in credit.) PLUSES: Full touch screen. Pocket comes in pink and silver. Touch comes in red and black. (Both editions.) DRAWBACKS: More expensive – comparable to current models of other eReaders. No wi-fi or 3G on either model.

    5. Barnes & Noble – DEALS in stores. According to a press release issued by Barnes & Noble, Inc., they are having Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. The sales will run from Friday through Monday in stores and there will be a special sale online only on Monday. Many items will have savings up to 50% off and for participating stores, the first 25 customers to spend $50 will get a free $25 one-year membership at Barnes & Noble.

    6. Borders – online at Borders.com, no coupon necessary, Borders is offering 25% off through Sunday using promo code BDC6959X. In stores select items will be offered at 50% off (limited to two per title).

So, there are sales available whether you opt to stay up late after your tryptophan laden turkey supper to brave the masses, or simply settle down in front of your computer to hit “add to cart.” Either way, the end result for the book junkie is this – you will either have more books to read or a new device to read it on.

If you do celebrate the holidays, then happy happy. But either way, keep on reading!
