    Description…

Last summer, Lucy’s and Ben’s lives changed in an instant. One moment, they were shyly flirting on a lake raft, finally about to admit their feelings to each other after years of yearning. In the next, Trixie—Lucy’s best friend and Ben’s sister—was gone, her heart giving out during a routine swim. And just like that, the idyllic world they knew turned upside down, and the would-be couple drifted apart, swallowed up by their grief.

Now it’s a year later in their small lake town, and as the anniversary of Trixie’s death looms, Lucy and Ben’s undeniable connection pulls them back together. They can’t change what happened the day they lost Trixie, but the summer might finally bring them closer to healing—and to each other.

    The Review

THE LAST THING YOU SAID is a beautifully written, heartachingly sad, and absolutely breathtaking story of friendship, loss, and love. Told from the perspectives of Lucy and Ben, the story takes place over the four months of summer, nearly a year after the death of Lucy’s best friend and Ben’s sister Trixie. It is a poignant, emotional, and heartrending read that is easily relatable and easy to love, whether or not you’ve experienced the pain of loss.

On the day that Trixie died, Lucy lost more than just her best friend, she lost Ben and the possibility of something more between them. Ben’s guilt at not being able to save his sister has caused him to push Lucy away, leaving them both heartbroken, angry, and alone with their grief.

They managed to avoid each other during the school year, but when summer rolls around they can’t seem to stay out of each other’s way, serving as a constant reminder of Trixie’s absence, of how things used to be, and of what might have been. Their interactions are often filled with silences or angry words, but until they are willing to confront their feelings for one another, they won’t be able to move forward. And unless they are able to find a way through their sorrow, they won’t be able to move on.

Sara Biren’s debut is exquisite and fragile and incredibly affecting. The author perfectly captured the emotions – the anguish and emptiness and anger – that follow the sudden, unexpected death of a loved one. She revealed wonderful and touching memories of a character readers never got to meet, but didn’t make her into a saint. And she gave readers two characters who made mistakes, who were hurting, who were lost, who needed each other, and whose love story was not yet finished.

An impressive and expressive first from Author Sara Biren, THE LAST THING YOU SAID is gorgeous and delicate and without a doubt promises to be a tearful read.

    A note on the printing…

The finished hardcover was printed in purple ink, which enhanced the reading experience, adding to both the beauty and sadness of the story.

Review: THE INCONCEIVABLE LIFE OF QUINN

Title: THE INCONCEIVABLE LIFE OF QUINN
    Author: Marianna Baer
    Release date: April 4, 2017
    Publisher: Amulet Books
    Pages: 384
    Formats: Hardcover, eBook

    Description…

Quinn Cutler is sixteen and the daughter of a high-profile Brooklyn politician. She’s also pregnant, a crisis made infinitely more shocking by the fact that she has no memory of ever having sex. Before Quinn can solve this deeply troubling mystery, her story becomes public. Rumors spread, jeopardizing her reputation, her relationship with a boyfriend she adores, and her father’s campaign for Congress. Religious fanatics gather at the Cutlers’ home, believing Quinn is a virgin, pregnant with the next messiah. Quinn’s desperate search for answers uncovers lies and family secrets—strange, possibly supernatural ones. Might she, in fact, be a virgin?

    AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | iTUNES | INDIEBOUND | ABRAMS BOOKSGOODREADS

    The Review

Marianna Baer’s THE INCONCEIVABLE LIFE OF QUINN is a unique and unusual story of a girl who discovers she is pregnant, but has no recollection of how, when, or with whom it might have happened. Mainly told from her point of view, but with a number of brief chapters from several others in Quinn’s life, she attempts to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Her search for answers takes her down strange, disturbing, disquieting paths, but also those that are beautiful and magical and filled with wonder. All of which make for a different and haunting and thoroughly engaging read.

The daughter of a politician that turns up pregnant is enough to make headlines. But when it’s uncovered that she claims to be a virgin, the story explodes. Some believe she’s a liar. Some assume she’s covering up a traumatic event. And some believe she’s carrying the next messiah.

Having no memory of the conception, Quinn doesn’t know what to believe. Could she have forgotten a romantic night with her boyfriend Jesse? Could she have blocked out a violent attack from a stranger or someone she knows? Could she have been drugged? Could she be going crazy? Could there have been magical, mystical, or supernatural forces at work? Or could a higher power have bestowed her with a gift?

Her friends think she’s keeping secrets. Her family thinks she’s either lying, deluded, or unhinged. Her therapist wants Quinn to discover the truth by herself. The media loves having a juicy bit of gossip. The religious fanatics just want a piece of her.

And until she can solve the mystery, anything is possible.

Marianna Baer has created a story that has both elements of reality and of myth. She touches upon several real-life issues from unplanned teen pregnancy and the choices that follow, to dysfunctional families, to faith, religion, and zealotry, to mental health and wellness, to sexual assault, to the destructive influence of the media. And she balances this with the possibility of something elemental, spiritual, mythical, otherworldly.

THE INCONCEIVABLE LIFE OF QUINN gives you a lot to think about and invites you to come to your own conclusion. It is a curious, compelling, and rather marvelous tale of a girl whose life is most definitely inconceivable.

    Description…

In this modern day spin on Leroux’s gothic tale of unrequited love turned to madness, seventeen-year-old Rune Germain has a mysterious affliction linked to her operatic talent, and a horrifying mistake she’s trying to hide. Hoping creative direction will help her, Rune’s mother sends her to a French arts conservatory for her senior year, located in an opera house rumored to have ties to The Phantom of the Opera.

At RoseBlood, Rune secretly befriends the masked Thorn—an elusive violinist who not only guides her musical transformation through dreams that seem more real than reality itself, but somehow knows who she is behind her own masks. As the two discover an otherworldly connection and a soul-deep romance blossoms, Thorn’s dark agenda comes to light and he’s forced to make a deadly choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or face the wrath of the phantom who has haunted the opera house for a century, and is the only father he’s ever known.

Note: This review is based on an eARC received by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    The Review

It only takes moments after diving into any story that A.G. Howard has penned to discover just how incredible she is at painting pictures with her words. And with ROSEBLOOD the discovery will be even quicker than that. You’ll be instantly transported into this imaginative and magical world she so vividly describes, getting happily lost there until the story ends.

The author has taken a well-known story that has had more than one iteration and interpretation, and has invented her own version of the tale, introduced her own characters, and created her own mystery to intrigue her readers. She has added in her very unique brand of quirky and bizarre. And came up with something altogether new and unexpected which adds layers and depth to her modern-day version of Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera.

ROSEBLOOD blends beauty with the macabre, heartbreak with the horrifying, the normal with the unusual, the past and the present. It is an adventure, a mystery, and a love story. It is gorgeous and captivating and strange. It is haunting and disturbing and brilliant.

It’s not easy to reinvent a classic, but to do so while paying homage to it in both obvious and subtle ways, and building upon it in a way that feels like a natural extension of the story, is a testament to just how talented a writer A.G. Howard is and how much she knows the story she’s basing hers upon.

She makes this story fresh and interesting and current. Her main characters, Rune and Thorn are incredibly appealing, their plights are sympathetic, and their histories are riveting and heartrending.

If ROSEBLOOD is your very first introduction to the phantom, you’ll learn all you need to know about him, and Christine, and more. Certainly more than enough to fall deeply in love with this book, even if not with him. You’ll meet a host of characters who have all sorts of motivations, complications, eccentricities, drama. You’ll uncover all kinds of hidden and not-so-hidden gems the author has peppered throughout. You’ll be fascinated and enchanted and engaged by this rich and stunning and extraordinary tale.

    Author: Jesse Andrews
    Release date: April 5, 2016
    Publisher: Amulet Books
    Pages: 336
    Formats: Hardcover, paperback, audio, eBook

    Description…

From Jesse Andrews, author of the New York Times bestselling Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and screenwriter of the Sundance award–winning motion picture of the same name, comes a groundbreaking young adult novel about music, love, friendship, and freedom as three young musicians follow a quest to escape the law long enough to play the amazing show they hope (but also doubt) they have in them.

Inspired by the years he spent playing bass in a band himself, The Haters is Jesse Andrews’s road trip adventure about a trio of jazz-camp escapees who, against every realistic expectation, become a band.

For Wes and his best friend, Corey, jazz camp turns out to be lame. It’s pretty much all dudes talking in Jazz Voice. But then they jam with Ash, a charismatic girl with an unusual sound, and the three just click. It’s three and a half hours of pure musical magic, and Ash makes a decision: They need to hit the road. Because the road, not summer camp, is where bands get good. Before Wes and Corey know it, they’re in Ash’s SUV heading south, and The Haters Summer of Hate Tour has begun.

In his second novel, Andrews again brings his brilliant and distinctive voice to YA, in the perfect book for music lovers, fans of The Commitments and High Fidelity, or anyone who has ever loved—and hated—a song or a band. This witty, funny coming-of-age novel is contemporary fiction at its best.

    Return to Wonderland…

A post-Ensnared collection of three stories—available in both print and e-versions.

Alyssa Gardner went down the rabbit hole and took control of her destiny. She survived the battle for Wonderland and the battle for her heart. In this collection of three novellas, join Alyssa and her family as they look back at their memories of Wonderland.

In Six Impossible Things, Alyssa recalls the most precious moments of her life after Ensnared, and the role magic plays in preserving the happiness of those she loves. Alyssa’s mother reminisces about her own time in Wonderland and rescuing the man who would become her husband in The Boy in the Web. And Morpheus delves into Jeb’s memories of the events of Splintered in The Moth in the Mirror, available in print for the first time.

This collection expands upon Ensnared‘s epilogue, and includes some deleted scenes to provide a “director’s cut” glimpse into the past and futures of our favorite Splintered characters.

    About A.G. Howard

    Author_AG_Howard

A.G. Howard was inspired to write SPLINTERED while working at a school library. She always wondered what would’ve happened had the subtle creepiness of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland taken center stage, and she hopes her darker and funkier tribute to Carroll will inspire readers to seek out the stories that won her heart as a child.

When she’s not writing, A.G.’s pastimes are reading, rollerblading, gardening, and family vacations which often include impromptu side trips to 18th century graveyards or condemned schoolhouses to appease her overactive muse.

    Description…

This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she’s always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she’ll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

    REVIEW

What a spectacular ending to an absolutely magical and enchanting series. ENSNARED takes readers and characters alike on new adventures, visits new and even more bizarre landscapes, and introduces a host of new characters – some of whom are likable, most of whom are mad or wicked, all of whom are more than a tad peculiar.

It is a wild and riveting ride with numerous obstacles to overcome and deadly foes to best. It is a suspenseful, action-filled, heartbreaking and utterly bewitching tale. It is the perfect end to this dark and twisty and positively gorgeous series that takes readers down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass into very different versions of the places they thought they knew.

From the moment A.G. Howard first invited readers to take a look through her lens at what Wonderland was really like, she proved just how creative and whimsical and quirky and imaginative she was as an author. And she continued to prove that with each and every book in this series.

In ENSNARED she brings her newest creations to life, pitting them against Alyssa, her family, her friends and the netherlings on their side. She forces Alyssa to embrace the darkness within her and accept who she really is or risk losing not only those she loves but all of Wonderland. And she makes her confront what she feels for both her knight and her moth.

The story picks up right where things left off in UNHINGED, tosses readers right back into the chaos and takes them on an incredible journey that they will wish would never end. It ties up all loose ends, answers those burning questions readers have been dying to know, and brings Alyssa’s story to a more than satisfying close.

This series-ending book is weird and wonderful, beautiful and grotesque, and unforgettable and simply amazing. Saying goodbye to Allie, Chessie, Jeb, Morpheus and Wonderland won’t be easy for its fans. But with an epilogue that allows for a peek into what happens after, they won’t be left wondering.

Expect to be wowed. Expect to be shocked. Expect there to be a few, or more, tears. Expect to fall in love one last time with ENSNARED, a truly epic and twisted and extraordinary adventure.

ENSNARED in a Winter Wonderland Blog Tour: ‘Morpheus’ Guest Post + Giveaways

    EnsnaredNew Banner

I am crazy madly in love with A.G. Howard’s Splintered series, so of course I’m super stoked to be kicking off the ENSNARED in a Winter Wonderland Blog Tour. And if you didn’t already know, I have a major crush on Morpheus. So the fact that I get a post with a super fab pic of him in a Santa cap and a song that he and Chessie tinkered with makes me all sorts of happy.

There are also some fab prizes available for giveaway. So be sure to scroll down after the very awesome post by A.G. Howard and Morpheus to enter.

And while I would love to tease about what happens in ENSNARED, I’ve been sworn to secrecy. Therefore I will not talk about that payment referenced below. Or about what happens following that killer ending in UNHINGED. Or about what Alyssa discovers when she finds…. Nope, not going to say another word. Even though I really, really, want to.

And so that I won’t accidentally ramble, I’m now going to turn my blog over to the very imaginative, creative, awesome and amazing A.G. Howard.

    The Guest Post

Welcome to the first stop of the Ensnared in a Winter Wonderland Tour! 🙂

There will be five stops total on this tour, and four of those will have two rafflecopters offering prizes at the end of each post. One rafflecopter will have an INTL prize donated by me, and the other, 10 brand-spanking new hardback copies of Ensnared, donated by my generous publisher—domestic winners only.

    So there’s something for everyone!

Now, let’s get to the good stuff. I’m in the Christmas spirit today, and even convinced Morpheus to let my friend photo shop a Santa hat onto his picture (though he’s being grumpy and refused any color but blue to match his suit).

    Morpheus

Also, as you know, Wonderland’s wisdom keeper does nothing without a price, so fair warning Alyssa: he bargained for a romantic dancing scene with you, payment forthcoming in Ensnared.

    *ahem*

Now, as a contribution to our wintery themed blog tour, Morpheus and his right-hand cat, Chessie, worked up a tribute to one of Wonderland’s most formidable denizens. The lyrics are put to the tune of Walking in a Winter Wonderland.

Pay attention … for in order to unlock today’s rafflecopter for the INTL prize, you have to correctly answer who this song is about, and what purpose this particular netherling serves in Wonderland.

    Ensnared in a Winter Wonderland

    Ghastly screams…
    Are you listening?
    In her lair,
    Snow is glistening.

    A horrible sight,
    In sepia light,
    Ensnared in a winter Wonderland.

    Gone away, is the raven;
Here to stay, an eight-legged maven.

    Rotting doll heads
    Wrapped in gossamer webs,
    Ensnared in a winter Wonderland.

In the graveyard we can build a snowman,
And pretend that he is Rabid White.
    He’ll say, “Are you frightened?”
    We’ll say, “No Man.
For it takes a child’s nightmares
    To do it right.”

    Later on
    We’ll conspire.
    As we dance midst a fire;

    To face unafraid
    The deathbeds she made…
    Ensnared in a winter Wonderland.

If you already figured out who the song’s about, you’re one step closer to winning today INTL prizes:

The Art of Winter, a coffee table book filled with images of winter’s fierce and fragile beauty.

    Art-of-winter

And, 1 “Chessie tail” rearview mirror charm or Christmas tree ornament:

    Chessie-Tail

Also, up for grabs for only the domestic participants are 10 Ensnared hardbacks:

Ensnared final cover with title 1600

Check out the rafflecopters below for entry options, and we’ll see you tomorrow at Two Chicks on Books for day two of the tour and more prizes!

    About A.G.

Title & Series: SPLINTERED (Splintered #1)
    Release date: January 1, 2013
    Pages: 384
    Formats: Hardcover, paperback, audio, eBook

    Description

Title & Series: UNHINGED (Splintered #2)
    Release date: January 7, 2014
    Pages: 400
    Formats: Hardcover, paperback, audio, eBook
