I am so totally excited that in just a few hours my Kindle copy of SPLIT SECOND will download and I’ll be able to read it. I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for its release and it is finally, finally, just about here.

As I have spotlighted it for my Book Watch post and I will likely be gushing about it anywhere and everywhere, I don’t want to ramble on for too long now.

But I will say again that this is my most anticipated read this week. I love, love, LOVED the first book in this series, and I am so very curious about how this sequel will end. I’m not sure whether I want the ending to be as killer as the last book’s ending. In some way I do, but in a completely other way i really don’t.

While I have another book I will be reading this week, I can’t resist moving this one immediately onto the pile and hopefully will have much of it read by Tuesday.

    Description…

Life can change in a split second.

Addie hardly recognizes her life since her parents divorced. Her boyfriend used her. Her best friend betrayed her. She can’t believe this is the future she chose. On top of that, her ability is acting up. She’s always been able to Search the future when presented with a choice. Now she can manipulate and slow down time, too . . . but not without a price.

When Addie’s dad invites her to spend her winter break with him, she jumps at the chance to escape into the Norm world of Dallas, Texas. There she meets the handsome and achingly familiar Trevor. He’s a virtual stranger to her, so why does her heart do a funny flip every time she sees him? But after witnessing secrets that were supposed to stay hidden, Trevor quickly seems more suspicious of Addie than interested in her. And she has an inexplicable desire to change that.

Meanwhile, her best friend, Laila, has a secret of her own: she can restore Addie’s memories . . . once she learns how. But there are powerful people who don’t want to see this happen. Desperate, Laila tries to manipulate Connor, a brooding bad boy from school—but he seems to be the only boy in the Compound immune to her charms. And the only one who can help her.

As Addie and Laila frantically attempt to retrieve the lost memories, Addie must piece together a world she thought she knew before she loses the love she nearly forgot . . . and a future that could change everything.

ALL THAT GLOWS by Ryan Graudin will be released in the U.S. on February 11, 2014 in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 480 pages.

    Dots_Divider

I can’t believe I didn’t grab an early copy of ALL THAT GLOWS but I am stoked that my Kindle pre-order will be downloading soon. As I just rambled about this book’s release on my tour stop earlier today, I really don’t want to be too repetitive.

But I am really excited about discovering a story that I’m told is totally sweet and romantic. It will be the perfect Valentine’s Day read if I can sneak it onto the pile at the end of the week.

I love stories of magic, the Fae and princes. The fact that this particular prince is a “partying bad boy” makes me even more thrilled to meet him. And the fact that there is a touch of darkness in this story makes this a definite must read for me.

I hope to sneak this onto the pile at week’s end, but if I actually spend time studying like I should be doing, then I might not get this on the pile until next week.

    Description…

Emrys—a fiery, red-headed Fae—always embraced her life in the Highlands, far from the city’s draining technology, until she’s sent to London to rejoin the Faery Guard. But this isn’t any normal assignment—she’s sent to guard Prince Richard: Britain’s notorious, partying bad boy and soon-to-be King. The prince’s careless ways and royal blood make him the irresistible for the dark spirits that feed on mortals. Sweet, disheveled, and alive with adventure—Richard is one charge who will put Emrys’s magic and heart to the test.

When an ancient force begins preying on the monarchy, Emrys must hunt through the London’s magical underworld, facing down Banshees, Black Dogs and Green Women to find the one who threatens Richard’s life. In this chaos of dark magic, palace murders and paparazzi, Emrys finds herself facing an impossible choice. For despite all her powers, Emrys has discovered a force that burns brighter than magic: love.

    Three

    addtogoodreads

THREE by Kristen Simmons will be released in the U.S. on February 11, 2014 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Tor Teen, the print edition is 384 pages.

THREE is the third book in Author Kristen Simmons’ Article 5 series.

    Dots_Divider

I’ve had THREE pre-ordered since last summer and I’m super excited that it will finally be added to my collection this week. While I am seriously behind on this series by Author Kristen Simmons, I just had to pre-order this newest installment.

But I don’t want to take a peek at the description to find out where this story picks up. I don’t want to know what’s been happening with Ember and Chase. I don’t want to know if this is the final book in the Article 5 series.

And I really don’t want to accidentally spoil something major. So, yes, I am squinting as I type this so I don’t inadvertently read what I’ve pasted just below.

As I am a bit behind on this series, I won’t be adding THREE to my reading pile in the next couple of weeks. But if things slow down just a bit I hope to get caught up some time in April.

    Description…

Ember Miller and Chase Jennings are ready to stop running. After weeks spent in hiding as two of the Bureau of Reformation’s most wanted criminals, they have finally arrived at the safe house, where they hope to live a safe and quiet existence.

And all that’s left is smoking ruins.

Devastated by the demolition of their last hope, Ember and Chase follow the only thing left to them—tracks leading away from the wreckage. The only sign that there may have been survivors.

With their high profile, they know they can’t stay out in the open for long. They take shelter in the wilderness and amidst the ruins of abandoned cities as they follow the tracks down the coast, eventually finding refugees from the destroyed safe house. Among them is someone from Chase’s past—someone he never thought he’d see again.

Banding together, they search for a place to hide, aiming for a settlement a few of them have heard about…a settlement that is rumored to house the nebulous organization known as Three. The very group that has provided Ember with a tiny ray of hope ever since she was first forced on the run.

Three is responsible for the huge network of underground safe houses and resistance groups across the country. And they may offer Ember her only chance at telling the world her story.

    At fighting back.

    White Space

    addtogoodreads

WHITE SPACE by Ilsa J. Bick will be released in the U.S. on February 11, 2014 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by EgmontUSA, the print edition is 560 pages.

WHITE SPACE is the first book in Author Ilsa J. Bick’s new Dark Passages series. The second book in the series, THE DICKENS MIRROR, is slated for release in 2015.

    Dots_Divider

Oh. My. Gosh. I have been waiting forever for WHITE SPACE to release. And I can’t believe it will be in my collection in a matter of hours. The description for this book is completely and totally epic and I can’t wait to discover its dark amazingness.

This sounds totally chilling, totally dark, totally creepy. I love, love, love Memento and Inception which this book’s description references. I was completely sold when I read the words “deadly and horrifying world exists in the space between the written lines” – how perfect is that!?!

And I am just dying to be able to finally get the chance to read this book.

As this is a fairly lengthy tome and I have got to spend some time studying this week and I just know I would end up staying up all night reading this story, I have got to wait until next week to dive in. But I really, really want to read it the instant it downloads. It sounds like a total mind… bender.

    Description…

In the tradition of Memento and Inception comes a thrilling and scary young adult novel about blurred reality where characters in a story find that a deadly and horrifying world exists in the space between the written lines.

Seventeen-year-old Emma Lindsay has problems: a head full of metal, no parents, a crazy artist for a guardian whom a stroke has turned into a vegetable, and all those times when she blinks away, dropping into other lives so ghostly and surreal it’s as if the story of her life bleeds into theirs. But one thing Emma has never doubted is that she’s real.

Then she writes “White Space,” a story about these kids stranded in a spooky house during a blizzard.

Unfortunately, “White Space” turns out to be a dead ringer for part of an unfinished novel by a long-dead writer. The manuscript, which she’s never seen, is a loopy Matrix meets Inkheart story in which characters fall out of different books and jump off the page. Thing is, when Emma blinks, she might be doing the same and, before long, she’s dropped into the very story she thought she’d written. Trapped in a weird, snow-choked valley, Emma meets other kids with dark secrets and strange abilities: Eric, Casey, Bode, Rima, and a very special little girl, Lizzie. What they discover is that they–and Emma–may be nothing more than characters written into being from an alternative universe for a very specific purpose.

Now what they must uncover is why they’ve been brought to this place–a world between the lines where parallel realities are created and destroyed and nightmares are written–before someone pens their end.

    Pieces of Me

    addtogoodreads

PIECES OF ME by Amber Kizer will be released in the U.S. on February 11, 2014 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Delacorte Press, the print edition is 304 pages.

    Dots_Divider

When I read the description for PIECES OF ME I was totally intrigued and because I love the author’s writing I added it to my list of pre-orders. And I’m thrilled that it is releasing this week.

I am curious to find out whether this story is about posthumous self-discovery or whether it has more of a sci-fi bent… or whether it has a bit of both. The only types of stories I have heard of that involve the concept of cell memory are all horror stories, so I’m very interested in seeing if this story is just a bit different.

The tagline leads me to believe it’s something new, something heartwarming. So I can’t wait to get the chance to get this on the pile and find out. And if I don’t take on any more review books in the next couple of weeks, I hope to be able to add this to the pile in early April.

    Description…

When high school oddball and introvert Jessica Chai is killed in a car accident, her parents decide that Jessica would have wanted her organs donated to those who so desperately need these gifts of life. But Jessica is angry about dying and being dismembered.

Taking the idea of cell memory to the next level, not only do the recipients get pieces of Jessica, but gets pieces of their memories and lives moving forward—she knows what they know and keeps tabs on their growth, recovery, and development. This begins her journey to learn her purpose as she begins to grasp that her ties to these teenagers goes beyond random weirdness. It’s through their lives that Jessica learns about herself, as she watches the lives she literally touched continue to interlock.

I’m pretty sure I only have the five books and two novellas pre-ordered this week. Which makes me really happy, even though I haven’t read any of them. While all five novels may be TBR pile adds, for the first time in a long while my wallet will get a bit of a break. Though I am eyeing at least three books on the “Other Books of Note” list….

THE GLASS CASKET has been just begging me to click to buy, as has been ARCADIA FALLS and THE WORLDS WE MAKE. I’m not sure I’ll have the strength to resist. Especially as next weekend is a long weekend and I potentially have jury duty to sit through the following week.

And the longer I look at FATES the more my resistance begins to crumble. *SIGH.*

But for now I just have five books and two novellas pre-ordered. So that’s not such a bad thing. Even if I totally cave and add those other four books to the pile this week. Right?

    Anyway…

I hope that there are a number of books releasing this week that you’ve had on your radar and will now have in your collection. And I hope that when you do get to take them off the TBR pile that they are every bit as amazing as you’d hoped they’d be.

And if they’re just temporarily being loaned to you, I hope you don’t have to wait too long to devour them. Because I know just how much waiting sucks. So I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

    Happy reading!

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #128

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of June 11th-June 17th that I have pre-ordered.

    Another Little Piece

    addtogoodreads

ANOTHER LITTLE PIECE by Kate Karyus Quinn will be released in the U.S. on June 11, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by HarperTeen, the print edition is 432 pages.

    Line_001

I am so excited for the release of ANOTHER LITTLE PIECE on Tuesday. I’ve had it pre-ordered ever since I stumbled upon it a few months ago and I cannot believe that release day is finally almost here.

I did get an eARC for review but was having a bit of an issue with the formatting, so I decided to wait to finish it when my Kindle edition downloads. But it hasn’t been easy… the wait has been killer.

This book is so completely different from any of those I’ve read in recent years. The author’s voice and the way the story presents itself is quite unique. And the story is most definitely “haunting,” as the description so aptly calls it.

While I haven’t yet finished reading it, I have read enough to know that this is my kind of book. And I cannot wait to see how it all ends next week, just as soon as Novella Reading Week ends.

    Dance of the Red Death

    addtogoodreads

DANCE OF THE RED DEATH by Bethany Griffin will be released in the U.S. on June 11, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Greenwillow Books, the print edition is 336 pages.

DANCE OF THE RED DEATH is the second and final full-length book in author Bethany Griffin’s Masque of the Red Death series.

    Line_001

I cannot wait for both my eBook to download and my print copy, with its beautiful deckle edge, to arrive on Tuesday. DANCE OF THE RED DEATH was an amazing follow-up to the first book in the series. And as sad as I am that the series has ended, I am so unbelievably stoked to have had the chance to read it early.

As it was my Book Watch pick a few weeks ago, and I plan on posting my review on Tuesday, I won’t go rambling on and on about this sequel. I’m also just a little bit afraid that I might reveal too much, like why certain events broke my heart, why I was fascinated with what happened at the party, why I couldn’t decide between Will and Elliott.

I probably should stop now…. Though I just have to add that things are even more dire in DANCE OF THE RED DEATH, things do get resolved by the story’s end, and there are things in this book that made me cheer, things that made me tear up and many, many things that made me so very, very nervous.

While I won’t be re-reading it this week, I will be reading the novella, GLITTER & DOOM, and I hope to be able to read both books in this series again this summer.

    Rush

    addtogoodreads

RUSH by Eve Silver will be released in the U.S. on June 11, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and in hardcover and eBook formats at BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Katherine Tegen Books, the print edition is 368 pages.

RUSH is the first book in author Eve Silver’s The Game series. The second book in the series, PUSH, is slated for release in 2014 and the third book in the series, CRASH, will be releasing in 2015.

    Line_001

I hadn’t heard much about RUSH until I saw the cover pop up all across the blogosphere a few months ago. The cover was awesome and the title grabbed me so I decided to pre-order it for my Kindle without having actually read the description.

And if I had realized I had an early copy thanks to Jaime of Two Chicks on Books, I would have checked it out a bit more before its release. But as release day is just about here, I’m a little too late to do that.

But now that I have taken a peek at the description, I’m totally intrigued. Is it a game? Is it reality? And just what is the “deadly turn” the description mentions? I want to know.

While I can’t check it out this week, I think I’m going to have to add it to the pile in the next few weeks, because it sounds just a bit different than the books I normally read.

    Spies and Prejudice

    addtogoodreads

SPIES AND PREJUDICE by Talia Vance will be released in the U.S. on June 11, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by EgmontUSA, the print edition is 304 pages.

    Line_001

I love author Talia Vance’s writing. And I’m totally stoked to be able to add SPIES AND PREJUDICE to my collection this week. While I’m not exactly an Austen fan, I do think the framework of her story is interesting and I love the idea that this story gives that one a nod.

Even if I hadn’t read a book by the author before, I would have pre-ordered this book for my Kindle based on the first line in the description – “Fields’ Rule #1: Don’t fall for the enemy.” Because it tells me two things about the book – one that Fields is going to be a character I like and, two, she is going to fall for the enemy.

But the rest of the description also makes me excited to read this book. It sounds like a lot of fun with a bit of a mystery and two characters I can’t wait to meet. And I cannot wait to get this on my reading pile. Which I definitely plan to do after the challenge.

    TheImmortalCircusActTwo_COVER

    addtogoodreads

THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS: ACT TWO by A.R. Kahler will be released in the U.S. on June 11, 2013 in Kindle serial book format only. A paperback edition will be released in August.

Published by 47North, it is currently available to pre-order online at AMAZON.

THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS: ACT TWO is the second book in author A.R. Kahler’s The Immortal Circus series.

    Line_001

I am so in love with this series and I’m so glad that it was brought to my attention this past winter. I loved reading the first book in the series in serial format and I’m totally thrilled to be able to add THE IMMORTAL CIRCUS: ACT TWO to my collection this week. Well… episode one, that is.

Though I actually got the chance to read this just a bit early. And so I got to experience this second book in its entirety, in one sitting, instead of in serial format. Which makes me happy and sad. Happy because I don’t have to wait between reads. But sad because I know exactly where each episode ends and begins and just how deliciously torturous it would have been to experience as a serial.

Even though I have read ACT TWO already, I think I am going to re-read each Episode as they release, to experience it that way again. While it won’t be quite as torturous, I think I still will be anxiously awaiting the next episode’s release. And given all the stuff that happens in the Cirque des Immortels and all that is revealed about Vivienne, I just know it will be every bit as exciting a read as it was the first time.

    Born of Illusion

    addtogoodreads

BORN OF ILLUSION by Teri Brown will be released in the U.S. on June 11, 2013 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in both formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Balzer + Bray, the print edition is 384 pages.

BORN OF ILLUSION is the first book in author Teri Brown’s series of the same name. The second book in the series, BORN OF DECEPTION, is expected in 2014.

    Line_001

I am devastated that I didn’t get the chance to finish reading BORN OF ILLUSION before its release. I’d received an early copy from Jaime of Two Chicks on Books and read about one-fourth before I was forced to set it aside to read the books I needed to read for review.

But I have had it pre-ordered for my Kindle and I cannot wait until it downloads so I can read the finished version. And I think I’m going to end up purchasing the print edition which has a deckle edge, because the cover is gorgeous. I’m just waiting to see if it has a matte or glossy finish first.

I love the time period the story is set in – the 1920s. I love that it’s set in New York and involves illusionists and real magic. And I cannot wait to continue this story and find out just what happens with Anna Van Housen and whether she is related to the “greatest magician of all.”

If I can get it on the pile again before the end of the month I will be a very happy girl.

    A Matter of Days

    addtogoodreads

A MATTER OF DAYS by Amber Kizer will be released in the U.S. on June 11, 2013 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at AMAZON and BARNES & NOBLE.

Published by Delacorte Press, the print edition is 288 pages.

    Line_001

When I saw that author Amber Kizer had a new book releasing last month I instantly added it to my pre-orders. I hadn’t heard of A MATTER OF DAYS until I was searching for June releases for my Book Watch post last month.

I immediately added it to buy, but didn’t actually read the description until I was creating this post. But now that I have, I think it sounds totally cool – the world sounds wonderfully dark and the journey sounds like it will be fraught with danger.

Traveling across the country in the hope of finding a survivalist compound through a world that has been decimated by the BluStar pandemic sounds like it will be incredibly exciting. And with no promise that this destination will even exist makes it sound that much more of a nerve-wracking adventure.

I can’t wait to find out what happens to Nadia, Rabbit and the rest of the kids on this journey and whether their trip was in vain. And I hope to do so early next month during the holiday.

Once again this week there are a ton of new books releasing. While I only have seven books pre-ordered, there are a few of the books of note that I’m definitely interested in taking a longer look at, including LINKED and BURNING. But for now I’m going to stick with pre-ordering just the seven.

Fortunately not all seven are being added to the pile – I did finish two of them – though both read books are ones I plan on re-reading….

But hopefully I’ll get a chance to read a few more of the new additions to my collection before the month is out – ANOTHER LITTLE PIECE, SPIES AND PREJUDICE, BORN OF ILLUSION – and the remainder I’ll get to finish next month. But, I suppose, that shall remain to be determined.

    Anyway…

As this is such a long post, with all the new releases this week, I’ll stop rambling and just say that I hope you have some amazing new books getting added to your collection this week. And if I missed something in my searches, please let me know! As I never, ever, want to miss an awesome title that should be in my permanent collection.

As always, happy book acquiring and happy reading!

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #98

Below are the YA books releasing this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of November 13th-November 19th that I have pre-ordered.

SOUL SCREAMERS VOLUME TWO by Rachel Vincent was released in the U.S. today, November 13, 2012, in paperback and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Harlequin Teen, the print edition is 704 pages.

SOUL SCREAMERS VOLUME TWO includes the full-length novels MY SOUL TO KEEP and MY SOUL TO STEAL along with the novella REAPER.

    ***

Okay, so I’ve read all the stories that are contained in SOUL SCREAMERS VOLUME TWO. More than once. But it’s so gorgeous I just had to pre-order a copy… or two. I have all the other books in print and I just know it will look amazing tucked between SSV1 and IF I DIE.

This is one of my favorite series of all time and my heart is already breaking that I will have to say goodbye to it next year. But I hope that there will be a third and fourth volume with perhaps a new novella added to that final volume. My fingers are already crossed.

As I know just how both books and the novella end in this volume I can’t possibly pretend to guess. But between Avari’s wicked ways and Sabine’s evil scheming, both full-length novels are the stuff of awesome.

And finally getting the chance to see REAPER in print is something I’ve been waiting, wishing and hoping for, for a long, long time. Now if that delivery man would only get here soon….

RENEGADE by J.A. Souders was released in the U.S. today, November 13, 2012, in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Tor Teen, the print edition is 368 pages.

RENEGADE is the first book in the author’s The Elysium Chronicles.

    ***

I hadn’t heard much about RENEGADE until Jaime of Two Chicks on Books insisted this was amazing and that I had to read it asap. While it was available on NetGalley, as I knew I wouldn’t be able to read it early I immediately headed to Amazon to pre-order it for my Kindle.

I’m now so very curious to meet Evelyn Winters and see what life is like in Elysium, an “underwater utopia.” Especially as this may not be a utopian society at all, since the description mentions “everything she knows is a lie.”

I’m dying to find out why her memories have been altered and just who she’s under the control of. And I want to find out just what secret her mother has that “will destroy them all.”

This book was moved to the top of my reading pile and I hope to be able to dive into it tonight.

EXECUTION by Alexander Gordon Smith was released in the U.S. today, November 13, 2012, in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR), the print edition is 320 pages.

EXECUTION is the fifth and final book in the author’s Escape from Furnace series.

    ***

I have been waiting for what seems like forever for EXECUTION to be released. It finally downloaded to my Kindle some time after midnight but I didn’t get the chance to read it yet. And I’m a little terrified of starting it.

I am almost positive I’m going to be heartbroken when this series ends. I am still so unbelievably sad about what has happened to certain of the characters and about what Alex has become.

I spotlighted this for my Book Watch post last month but I’m now terrified to find out who wins in the end. The world has taken a darker turn with each installment in the series. And with a title like EXECUTION, I can only imagine things will get even darker.

I am hopeful the “executed” will be who I want it to be. But even if that happens, I’m not at all confident that means a happy ending for Alex or his friends. And I’m more than nervous about checking out the series epilogue on the author’s website.

Now I just have to get over my “series ending” fears and pick this book up later this week. If only it downloaded last night when I was feeling daring.

BLACK CITY by Elizabeth Richards was released in the U.S. today, November 13, 2012, in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Putnam Juvenile, the print edition is 384 pages.

BLACK CITY is the first book in the author’s Black City Chronicles. The second book in the series, PHOENIX, is slated for release on June 4, 2013 and the third book, currently untitled, will release in 2014.

    ***

I only fairly recently – in the past three months or so – heard about BLACK CITY. I’d seen it around the blogosphere but hadn’t realized it was a YA release until I saw it on Parajunkee’s blog. And my curiosity was piqued.

I received an ARC of BLACK CITY from the awesome Jaime of Two Chicks on Books, but haven’t yet had the chance to read it. Though I do now also have the eBook happily residing on my Kindle from my pre-order. Decisions… decisions….

I love the first line of the description for this book – “A dark and tender post-apocalyptic love story set in the aftermath of a bloody war.” It’s gotten me so interested in finding out more about both the love story and the war.

I am dying to find out what a Darkling is and why they are at war with the humans. I am so curious as to what this “mysterious connection” is that bonds Natalie and Ash, causing Ash’s heart to beat. And I’m hopeful that the choices they make don’t result in either or both of their deaths.

I had hoped to read this early, but as that didn’t happen as planned, I am now hoping to put this back on top of the pile next week.

BAD HAIR DAY by Carrie Harris was released in the U.S. today, November 13, 2012, in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Delacorte Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 240 pages.

BAD HAIR DAY is the second book in the author’s Kate Grable series. Also releasing today is a short story in the series entitled BAD YETI.

    ***

I have not yet read the first book in Carrie Harris’ series but I desperately want to. So, of course I had to pre-order BAD HAIR DAY, since I already own book one.

I was so tempted to start the series last night before this sequel downloaded to my Kindle. Because, though I probably shouldn’t have, I did end up taking a peek at the description.

And I love that this sequel takes on a new, hairy, paranormal element… possibly… rather than continuing the zombie menace.

I can’t wait to meet Kate Grable and find out whether she’s just as good at sleuthing other types of attacks as she is zombie attacks. I really hope she is for her sake and for her peers’ sakes.

And I love the last line in the description that says – “It’s scary. It’s twisted. It’s sick. It’s high school.” Yep, that about sums it up.

Hopefully I’ll get to read this series over the long holiday weekend here in the U.S.

REACHED by Ally Condie was released in the U.S. today, November 13, 2012, in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in all formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Dutton Juvenile, the print edition is 384 pages.

REACHED is the third and final book in author Ally Condie’s Matched trilogy.

    ***

I have not started this series and now it’s ending with REACHED. I can’t believe it! I officially now own all the books in this series so there’s no reason why I shouldn’t start reading them. Because now I don’t have to wait to find answers.

I want to meet Cassia and Ky and find out just what happens with these characters – whether they get a happy ending or whether their story ends in heartbreaking loss.

I have not taken too close a look at the descriptions for these last two books because I want the story to be a surprise. But I am so curious to see how things play out.

This series is touted as a best-selling series. And the covers are totally amazing. And now that I’ve become a fan of dystopian novels this one ranks at the top of my list of must-reads. I hope I can read all three books this December.

ECHO by Alyson Noel was released in the U.S. today, November 13, 2012, in hardcover, paperback, audio and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in all formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by St. Martin’s Griffin, the print edition is 352 pages.

ECHO is the second book in author Alyson Noel’s Soul Seekers series. The third book in the series, MYSTIC, releases on May 7, 2013 and the fourth book, currently untitled, is slated for release in the fall of 2013.

    ***

I love Alyson Noel’s writing and the enchanting worlds she creates. And while I haven’t yet started this series I do own the first book and had pre-ordered ECHO which downloaded to my Kindle today.

I am so very curious to meet the girl who can “navigate between the worlds of the living and the dead.” Although it sounds like things take a bit of a dark turn in this second book in the series. Dark sorcerers. An evil brother whose power is growing. The balance between good and evil at risk. The entire world in jeopardy. A horrifying prophecy. And an unthinkable sacrifice.

Yes, this definitely sounds like it takes a turn. And with characters with super awesome names like Daire, Dace and Cade, this series is one I can’t wait to read about really, really soon.

SPEED OF LIGHT by Amber Kizer was released in the U.S. today, November 13, 2012, in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Delacorte Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 544 pages.

SPEED OF LIGHT is the third book in the author’s Fenestra series. Originally dubbed a trilogy, a fourth book, COUNTING TENS is slated for release in the spring of 2013.

    ***

I am so devastated I’ve fallen so far behind on this series. I pre-ordered SPEED OF LIGHT as soon as it was made available for the Kindle and I had hoped to be caught up with the series before this third book released. But sadly that did not happen.

I loved getting to know Meridian in the first book in the series. I’d waited for ages until book two was released but got so busy on the blog I didn’t have time to read it when it finally was available. And now book three is out. Which means I have much catching up to do.

Especially as it seems there will be a fourth book in the series, according to Goodreads. Though I’m wondering if it is a spinoff book from Tens’ perspective. I suppose I’ll have to wait just a bit longer to find out as the author’s website didn’t clue me in.

I am not checking out the description as I want zero spoilers when I finally get the chance to read this book. But I loved the author’s writing in book one, I loved the idea of the Fenestra and I loved the characters she created. And I really, really hope to be able to catch up on this series before COUNTING TENS is available next spring.

WOLF PACT Part 3 by Melissa de la Cruz was released today, November 13, 2012, in eBook format only. It is currently available to order online as an eBook at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

The eBook is published by Disney Hyperion.

WOLF PACT Part 3 is the third of four installments from author Melissa de la Cruz’s WOLF PACT. Part 4 is due out on December 4th.

    ***

I am waiting for all four parts of WOLF PACT to download before I start reading it. Because I don’t want to have to wait between each installment’s release. Though I probably then should have just purchased the completed eBook when it does release instead of pre-ordering each installment. Oh well.

I did take a look at the description and it has piqued my curiosity. I want to know just what kind of trap Lawson lures Bliss into. And I want to know if they do fall in love. But as the description is vague about just what happens in this installment, I suppose I’ll have to read it to find out more.

And once the final installment releases this December, I hope to find the answers I’ve been waiting for. But I can’t wait to read about Bliss in her very own novel, though I will always be partial to Schuyler and Jack and the rest of the Blue Bloods.

Bad Yeti (Kate Grable #1.5) by Carrie Harris

    Pub. Date: November 13, 2012

Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers

This was a huge week for releases. I don’t even know how I’ll be able to catch up on all these new books let alone the series that I’m so behind on. But I will be reading RENEGADE and EXECUTION and BLACK CITY in the next week or two.

And I will be gently petting SOUL SCREAMERS VOLUME TWO. No, I will not be breaking the spine on that book. The pretteh is only for looking at.

Of course Amazon had to be difficult and instead of downloading all my books at nine o’clock local time, they waited until Midnight, at which time I was just about out cold and couldn’t possibly have read a thing.

But I really must, must, must get caught up on Carrie Harris’s Kate Grable series and Amber Kizer’s Fenestra series. And if I don’t end up reading the Matched trilogy by year’s end, I’ll feel like a total fail.

And though it’s not listed, I did end up pre-ordering Night’s Darkest Embrace by Jeaniene Frost which I am so very interested in reading later this week.

    Anyway…

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

Book Watch: Releasing This Week #28

Below are the YA books coming out this week that I am spotlighting for my “Book Watch: Releasing This Week” post.

These are books for the week of July 12th-July 18th that I have pre-ordered.

    ***

Bad Taste in Boys by Carrie Harris will be released in the U.S. on July 12, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is available to pre-order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Delacorte Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 208 pages.

Bad Taste in Boys is one of the books that can be chosen for the 2011 Debut Author Challenge hosted by Kristi at TheStorySiren.com.

When I first saw this cover a few months ago I thought it was really cool and added it to my pre-orders based solely on the cover. I then heard it was a debut book from some of the blogs I stalked, so I knew I’d definitely be reading it.

I had no idea at the time this book was about zombies. I actually haven’t read too many books about zombies and I still need to finish the Carrie Ryan series. But this book sounds like a lot of fun. And as it’s just over 200 pages, it sounds like the perfect read to sneak in this week.

I think the idea behind this story – that steroids have had an odd effect on the football team, turning them into zombies – is clever and imaginative. And I really can’t wait to see if the main character and her friends and family are able to save the town from the zombie menance.

Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement-Moore will be released in the U.S. on July 12, 1011 in hardcover and eBook formats.

It is currently available online for pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in both formats.

Published by Delacorte Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 416 pages.

I mentioned this book in my “Extras” post last month and I’m so happy it’s finally coming out. This is another book I’ve had on pre-order for a long while. I fell in love with this cover last winter and couldn’t wait for the book’s release.

I had the opportunity to meet the author at the RT convention in Los Angeles in April, so I am super excited to finally get my hands on a copy. It’s been a long wait.

I read The Splendor Falls before I started blogging and knew I absolutely loved the author’s writing style. So adding Texas Gothic to the collection was a no brainer.

Although I probably won’t be able to read it this week I can’t wait to find out if this story about the odd goings-on at the Goodnight Ranch, which include a ghost stalker and a number of bodies turning up, is just as spellbinding as the other book of the authors that I’d read.

Wildcat Firefies in the second book in the Meridian series by Amber Kizer. It will be released in the U.S. on July 12, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats.

It is currently available for pre-order online in both formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Delacorte Books for Young Readers, the print edition is 528 pages.

This sequel is long-awaited. I loved the first book, Meridian, and found the concept of Fenestras so captivating. I’ve been just dying to find out what happens next for Meridian Sozu.

I know I’ve had an ARC from a trade for awhile, but as release date was so far off I had to put off reading it and then just never got the chance. Of course, it now releases in just a day and I still haven’t had the opportunity.

But I have had this book on pre-order for my Kindle for a long time now and I’m excited to finally be getting the finished copy. I still haven’t decided whether to read the ARC or the final version, but either way I like having the option.

In this follow-up to book one, Meridian and Tens begin to search for others like her – a half-human, half-angel who helps souls transition to the hereafter. According to the description they find someone named Juliet who needs their help. There’s also a hint that just maybe their relationship is in for some trouble. I really hope it’s nothing too serious.

To read an excerpt from the prologue on the book’s website, CLICK HERE.

The third book in the series, Speed of Light, is slated for release in the fall of 2012, and the fourth book, Counting Tens, will be releasing in the spring of 2013.

Dragon’s Oath, a House of Night novella by authors P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast, will be released in the U.S. on July 12, 2011 in hardcover, audio and eBook formats.

It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by St. Martin’s Griffin, the print edition is 160 pages.

I’ve had this on pre-order for a few months. I’m not sure how I became aware of the novella, but it was probably from discovering it on the blogs. I’ve been a long-time follower of this series, so I decided to add this novella to my collection.

Until I created this post I wasn’t even sure just how it tied in with the series. It seems that the authors have decided to create a series of novellas about some of the other characters in the books and Dragon’s Oath is about Professor Lankford from before he was a professor at the House of Night.

I’m trying this out because I have been a fan of the series and because I like Professor Lankford, but I’m not sure just how many of these I’ll be buying and reading going forward. It probably depends on the characters they choose to highlight. I have enjoyed the main series, but the past couple of books have begun to lose some of their charm for me.

But I am really looking forward to learning more about Dragon Lankford.

Sometimes It Happens by Lauren Barnholdt will be released in the U.S. on July 12, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. It is currently available to pre-order in both formats online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Simon Pulse, a division of Simon & Schuster, the print edition is 320 pages.

I first saw this book on Simon & Schuster’s Galley Grab, but I knew that I might not get a chance to read it prior to release so I added it to my pre-orders. Though I probably would have added it regardless, as I’ve read one or two things by this author and have several of her books on my eReader just waiting to be read.

All I can say is this sounds like one contemporary young adult novel that will make me bite my nails the entire time I’m reading it. From the description, the four characters, Hannah, Ava, Sebastian and Noah, are all hiding something and whatever it is they are keeping secret from one another will all come to light at the start of their senior year in high school.

The Goodreads description is such a tease and it’s made me just really want to know who ends up with who at the end of this story.

Forever by Maggie Stiefvater, the final book in the Wolves of Mercy Falls series, will be released in the U.S. on July 12, 2011 in hardcover, eBook and audio formats. It is currently available to pre-order online in all formats at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Published by Scholastic Press, the print edition is 400 pages.

I haven’t had Forever on pre-order for too long for my Kindle as it wasn’t available in eBook format until fairly recently. But I also have two signed copies on pre-order from the independent bookstore the author partners with, one I’ve ordered specifically for a giveaway.

I have been a huge fan of this series for so long. And at the time I’m writing this post, I am just about finished reading Forever, thanks to the signed ARC that Britney from I Eat Words sent me from BEA.

I love Sam and Grace’s story. And it is definitely more the story and the writing, versus the characters, that I find enchanting about this series. Sam and Grace are two characters who have been very difficult for me to connect with, yet I so completely love their story and this series. I won’t continue to gush, as I’ve already spotlighted Forever in my Book Watch post.

In this final installment in the series the entire wolf pack is in jeopardy of being hunted to extinction. And because a part of the description on Goodreads sums it up so well, I’ve decided to use that so as not to risk accidentally revealing any spoilers, which I know I’d do if I continue to ramble.

The past, the present, and the future are about to collide in one pure moment – a moment of death or life, farewell or forever. (From Goodreads)

    Maggie Stiefvater reads from Forever:

Undercurrent by Tricia Rayburn is the second book in the Siren trilogy. It will be released in the U.S. on July 12, 2011 in hardcover, eBook and audio formats.

It is currently available to pre-order at Amazon and Barnes & Noble in all formats.

Published by EgmontUSA, the print edition is 352 pages.

Okay, this is another book I pre-ordered solely based on cover love. I have not yet read the first book in the series, but I have had it on my Kindle for quite some time. Definitely before I started blogging.

When they revealed the new covers for this series I was so excited and stalked the eBook release for this second book in the series even though I hadn’t even started to read book one. That’s how much cover love I had for these new covers.

I have been too afraid to read the Goodreads description in case it will spoil my read for the first book in the series, but I’ll link it HERE in case anyone might want to know what happens in this book.

I know this series is about sirens, which I haven’t read too many books about, so I am definitely excited to finally get a chance to start reading. There’s nothing like cover love and a second book to motivate me to get caught up on this trilogy.

There are a couple posts on the author’s blog with teaser excerpts. CLICK HERE to check them out.

When I started writing up this post I thought I didn’t have too many books on order releasing this week. I had checked out HarperTeen’s “Coming Soon” site and saw nothing releasing that I had on pre-order and only remembered two of the above books.

Yeah, well apparently I have seven books on pre-order for this week. At least according to Amazon. And I won’t be surprised if I discover an eighth book downloading at Monday Midnight.

I’ve read only one of the above books that I’m buying this week, so that’s six new books for the pile. Granted, I still haven’t read the first book in the Siren series, but I plan to, when I have a spare moment…

I really want to read Wildcat Fireflies this week and Sometimes It Happens, but I’m not too hopeful. Perhaps next week.

But either way, there are some fantastic new releases this week, and I’m excited to be adding them all to my collection.

As always, I would love to hear what you’re hoping to add to your collection this week!

And if you have any great suggestions of “must read” books to buy that are releasing this week, please let me know!

    The Extras: July

Back with another “Extras” post. As some of you may already know…

Whenever I find either a legal free download, an excerpt or sneak peek of a book online, I try to link to it in a related post or include the link in my sidebar (to your right).

But once a month I’ll pop them into a post for a “one-stop shop” with a brief description. You may have previously seen some of these in my sidebar and one or two may still be lingering, well here they are once more in case you missed them. (My sidebar tends to have a LOT of info.)

We have a few peeks at upcoming releases, just released books and some of them are just items that have been offered for free for awhile but you might have missed.

And yes, I know it’s not July yet, but it’s a monthly post that I do around this time each month in anticipation.

Sirensong by Jenna Black will be released in the U.S. on July 5, 2011.

This is a fun and completely delightful series to read. Sirensong is the third book in the series and it continues Dana Hathaway’s adventures and this time she’s headed into Faerie.

The author is giving readers a look at Chapter One on her website, HERE

Even if you haven’t read the other books in the series the first chapter isn’t super spoiler-y.

Original Sin by Lisa Desrochers will be released in the U.S. on July 5, 2011.

This is the second book in the Personal Demons series. This is a book and series not to be missed. I have read both books in the series so I will give nothing away, but these books are definitely smoking hot.

Tor.com is giving registered readers a peek inside, HERE.

Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement-Moore will be released in the U.S. on July 12, 2011.

I think this cover and the font and the title are so amazing. I love this author’s writing style and I’m dying to read this book.

The main character, Amy Goodnight, comes from a family of witches. She has to spend her summer on the Goodnight Ranch where there are apparently ghosts, a “hot neighbor cowboy” and a bunch of bodies turning up. Definitely not an idea summer vacation.

The publisher, Random House,  is offering a short excerpt on their website, HERE.

Forever by Maggie Stiefvater will be released in the U.S. on July 12, 2011.

It is the third book in the Wolves of Mercy Falls series. There is just something so addictive about this series and so amazing about the author’s writing style.

For each of the past two books I was completely entranced by the writing and the story. I suspect there was magic involved.

Maggie Stiefvater reads an excerpt from Forever:

Wildcat Fireflies is the second book in the Meridian series by author Amber Kizer. It will be released in the U.S. on July 12, 2011.

It’s been awhile but the sequel is finally coming out! I loved the idea of beings called Fenestras and I was completely hooked when I first read the book. Then I found out it would be ages before the sequel. I think I cried a little bit.

Wildcat Fireflies continues the story as Meridian and Tens search the country for other Fenestras. And there may be trouble in paradise for the two of them. But with less than a month until release the wait is almost over.

And an excerpt is available on the book’s website, HERE.

Wildefire by Karsten Knight will be released in the U.S. on July 26, 2011.

Anyone who has ever stopped by the blog knows what a huge fan I am of this book and the author. It is an amazing debut and I don’t think you’ll find one quite like it.

If you have any doubts just check out the super long look inside the publisher is offering.

Check out Wildefire courtesy of Simon & Schuster, HERE.

Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer will be released in the U.S. on July 26, 2011.

If you haven’t read Nightshade by now, what are you waiting for? Wolfsbane is almost here. And if you haven’t yet, it’s time to choose sides – Team Ren or Team Shay?

If you’re still undecided you should definitely check out the book’s website. There is an excerpt for Nightshade there too.

An excerpt from Chapter One of Wolfsbane is available from the book’s website, HERE.

    ***

And for one more chance to take a peek, here are a few books that are available now.

Illusions by Aprilynne Pike, Divergent by Veronica Roth, Die for Me by Amy Plum, Hereafter by Tara Hudson, Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini, Vampire Kisses 8: Cryptic Cravings by Ellen Schreiber and Something Deadly This Way Comes by Kim Harrison

Discovering this link was like a gold mine. I wish I had discovered it before I read most of the above books. But I own them all now, so I don’t need the look inside, but if you haven’t read them, be sure to check it out.

The Dark Days of the Supernatural and HarperTeen are offering chapter excerpts for their seven books, HERE.

Summer’s Crossing by Julie Kagawa is a free eBook novella in the Iron Fey series. It was released on June 1, 2011 in the U.S.

The Iron Fey series is absolutely charming and delightful. I cannot wait for The Iron Knight to be released and I’m so glad that the author has released another novella in the series to help bridge the gap between her next book’s release date.

I haven’t yet read it, but I believe Summer’s Crossing is told from Puck’s point of view. I did grab it before it was a freebie on Amazon, but also managed to snag the free version for my nook. I plan on reading it in the next couple of weeks as I just love the easy flow of the author’s writing.

It’s actually available for download from three sites – Harlequin, CLICK HERE, Barnes & Noble, CLICK HERE and Amazon, CLICK HERE.

Ten Things We Did (and Probably Shouldn’t Have) by Sarah Mlynowski was released on June 7, 2011.

This contemporary novel by author Sarah Mlynowski sounds like it will be a really fun read. I own a copy but haven’t yet read it. I’m just hoping it’s more sweet than bittersweet. And I haven’t checked out the sneak peek, but the publisher is giving readers another long look.

HarperTeen is giving readers a long look inside, HERE.

The Ivy: Secrets by Lauren Kunze and Rina Onur was released on May 31, 2011.

I have been trying to find the time to read the first book in the series so I can read this one immediately afterward. The Ivy sounds like a great series to read, and if you have read the first book but not the second, this sneak peek should give you a good look at what you can expect from this book.

I have not taken a look as I don’t want to risk any spoilers for book one.

HarperTeen is giving readers another long look inside, HERE.

The Vampire Diaries: Stefan’s Diaries Vol. 3 – The Craving was released in the U.S. on May 3, 2011.

I love L.J. Smith’s Vampire Diaries series. I haven’t yet read Midnight, but I did buy all of the books in this off-shoot series that ties in with the television show, because I love that too. This is the third book in the Stefan’s Diaries series of books so if you haven’t had a chance to read the first one, you may want to skip the peek.

However, if you check out HarperTeen’s “browse inside” feature, they do offer a number of peeks at various different Vampire Diaries books.

A look inside of The Craving is available from the publisher, HarperCollins, HERE.

Virtue by Amanda Hocking was released on May 27, 2011 in the U.S.

I downloaded the book the moment it was released but have not had a chance to read it. This story is a young adult fairytale and it promises a battle between good and evil.

I love the author’s writing and can’t wait to read her latest book which includes goblins, demon dogs and sea dragons. Sounds pretty epic to me.

You can check it out on Virtue’s blog, HERE.

Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready was released in the U.S. on May 4, 2010.

Shade is the first book in the series and the sequel, Shift, was released in May of this year. Both books are amazing, but Shade is still my favorite of the two. That ending is killer.

It is set in a world where a shift has taken place and those born after the shift have the ability to see shades. But there is an amazing love story, a bit of a love triangle, and a whole lot of heartbreak.

If you haven’t had a chance to read this series, check out the long look at the first 99 pages of Shade that Simon & Schuster is offering HERE.

    ***

These are all great books and I hope you get a chance to read them. But it’s even nicer to get a long look inside before making the commitment. Happy reading!

    Review: Meridian

Meridian is the first book in a new series by Amber Kizer. It was released in hardcover, audio and eBook formats on August 11, 2009 and was released in paperback on August 24, 2010. The hardcover edition, published by Delacorte Books for Young Readers, is 320 pages.

The next book in the series, Wildcat Fireflies, is scheduled to be released on July 12, 2011 in hardcover and eBook formats. Both are available for pre-order at Amazon.com.

    Description from the author’s website:

Sixteen-year-old Meridian has always been surrounded by death. As a child, insects, mice, and salamanders burrowed into her bedclothes to die. As she grew, the animals got bigger, and soon they were finding her at school to die in her presence. Meridian became an outcast, labeled by her classmates as Reaper, Gravedigger, and Witch. Each death she witnesses weakens her body, and loneliness weakens her spirit.

On her sixteenth birthday, she witnesses a deadly car crash. Though she’s untouched, Meridian’s body explodes with the victims’ pain.

Before she can fully recover, Meridian is told that she’s a danger to her family and rushed to her great-aunt’s house in Revelation, Colorado. It’s there that she learns the secret her mother has been hiding her entire life: that she is a Fenestra, the half-angel, half-human link between the living and the dead. It’s crucial that she learn how to transition human souls to the afterlife and preserve the balance between good and evil on earth. But Meridian and her sworn protector and love, Tens, face great danger from the Aternocti, a band of dark forces who capture vulnerable souls on the brink of death and cause chaos. Dark, lovely, and lushly romantic, MERIDIAN introduces a powerful heroine who will entrance readers.

Meridian Sozu believed she was human. For the first sixteen years of her life no one told her any different. Sure, she wasn’t exactly normal by anyone’s standards, even her own, but she certainly didn’t think she wasn’t human.

All of her life, living creatures would just come up to her and die. If this freaked her out, how could she expect anyone else not to think of her as a freak and an outcast? I mean, who wants to be friends with someone that may just be walking death?

There was also the problem with photos. There was not one single picture of her. Every time anyone tried to take a photo of her, there was this blinding light that would distort the image.

But on her sixteenth birthday everything changed. In the course of one day, she went from having a home and a family, to being rushed out of town while her family packed up and moved away to an undisclosed location.

She was told it was for her safety and theirs that she go and stay with her Aunt Merry in Revelation, Colorado, that she is something other and that now that she’s sixteen she is in danger.

Finding this out while being rushed to the bus station with some cash and a few changes of clothing is not in the least bit comforting. And being provided with only the sketchiest of details only makes matters worse. What exactly does it mean to be a Fenestra?  Who is she in danger from? And why now?

Running to an Aunt that she barely knows aside from a yearly quilt she receives is probably one of the most frightening things that has happened to Meridian, but what awaits her in Colorado is much worse.

    ***

Meridian is the first book in a new series by Amber Kizer. It brings to the young adult market a new spin on the angels theme. Meridian Sozu is a half-angel, half-human whose purpose is to help souls pass from this world into the afterlife. There are also beings, the Alternocti or Nocti, who seek to lead souls away from the light and into the dark. These Destroyers also hope to turn the Fenestra toward their side to tip the balance in their favor.

With the help of her Protector, Tens, and the guidance of her aunt, Meridian will need to quickly learn how to master this process before it kills her or before the Nocti can destroy her.

Meridian is an utterly captivating story. The author does a beautiful job of developing Meridian Sozu’s character from frail and confused to strong and focused, ready to accept the awesome responsibility she has been given and the good that she can provide to others at a most frightening time.

I’m eclipsed by my role in the world.

Author Amber Kizer gives readers insight into the Fenestra history by creatively weaving in journal entries at the beginning of several chapters in the story from other Fenestra as well as Meridian’s aunt.

The story will keep you engaged from the moment Meridian is abruptly whisked off to join her aunt in Colorado until the story’s climactic ending.

Although it is not a cliffhanger, the novel sets the stage, with an almost prequel-like feel, for many possible adventures to come in Meridian’s quest to maintain the balance between light and dark.

    Reviewer gives this book [rating=5]

    On a personal note:

    I. Loved. This. Book.

Although it fits right in with other books in this genre, the concept of the Fenestra makes this remarkably different. The idea of beings who act as windows to help souls transition from this life is something I haven’t seen in any of the YA books I’ve read.

When I first started to read this book I did notice some similarities in the setting that made it, at first glance, blend in with the Need series. A girl leaves her family to stay with an aunt she doesn’t know very well, in a remote, wooded and wintry locale. There is a also wolf. But that’s where the similarities end.

I loved all the characters, especially Auntie Merry who was one totally awesome one hundred and six-year-old woman and Custos the wolf who immediately befriended Meridian. Meridian was a strong and sympathetic character and Tens was the perfect protector. And the baddie in this story was most definitely detestable.

And yes, I know,it’s geeky, but I loved the element of the one sixes – Meridian was sixteen (16), January 6 was a key date (1/6), and Auntie Merry was one hundred and six (106).

No, I did not sob my way through this book, but there may have been a tear or two. And I was completely rooting for Tens and Meridian as a couple.

There was no question I was going to re-read this book and I will most likely read it again before Wildcat Fireflies.

    ***

    How I “discovered” this book:

Meridian is a “Just Discovered” re-read book.

This is another book that was suggested to me by my purchase history on Amazon. I wasn’t pulled in by the cover, although I did like the skulls mixed in with the roses, but it was the summary/synopsis that caught my eye.

I bought this eBook early in 2010, and as it’s been awhile I decided that it was due for a re-read, especially with the next book in the series coming out this summer.
