Q4 Review Pile Reading Challenge Wrap-up + Giveaway

    Horizontal

    It’s a wrap!

The year has ended and so has the Q4 2015 Review Pile Reading Challenge. Thank you ALL so much for participating in the challenging. I hope you were able to reduce those review book TBR piles so that you can start off 2016 guilt-free and with a clean slate.

While my December wasn’t nearly as successful as the other two challenge months, I kind of knew it wouldn’t be. So while I am disappointed that I didn’t read and review all the books I’d hoped to, I’m not surprised.

How I Did with My December Reads

    • PASSENGER by Alexandra Bracken – releases January 5th. Read & Review TK next week.
    • THICKER THAN WATER by Brigid Kemmerer – released December 29th. Read & Review TK today.
    • THE IMPOSTOR QUEEN by Sarah Fine – releases January 5th. Not yet read.
    • FORGET TOMORROW by Pintip Dunn – released November 3rd. Not yet read.
    • THE KILLING JAR by Jennifer Bosworth – releases January 12th. Not yet read.
    • THE VIOLINIST OF VENICE by Alyssa Palombo – released December 15th. Read & Review TK next week.
    • FLAWED by Cecilia Ahern – releases April 5th, 2016. Read & Review TK closer to release.
    • BLACKHEARTS by Nicole Castroman – releases February 9th, 2016. Review TK Feb. 8th.

I managed to read just five books in December and didn’t review any of them quite yet. A couple I’d read too early to review, one I’ll be reviewing today, and the other two I’ll be reviewing next week. But none of them qualify for the challenge. So a total fail.

Judging by the review links in the December post, however, I know you all did so much better than I did. Yay! And CONGRATULATIONS!

    The Giveaway

    giveaway

As a thank you to everyone who signed up and participated in at least one month of this challenge I am hosting a quickie final “thank you” giveaway.

    • ONE (1) book of the winner’s choice (up to $20 USD) releasing on January 5th – from Amazon or The Book Depository

Just leave a comment with your favorite book read and reviewed for this challenge and I’ll throw your names into Random at 11:59 PM Pacific on January 4th to select a winner.

And THANK YOU so much for participating in the challenge with me last quarter!

    And the winner is…

    Congratulations Jennifer K!

How I Did With My November Reads.

I am not thrilled with how I did in November. I wanted to read and review eight books and hoped to read and review an additional six books. I actually read and reviewed just nine. Though I did read twelve review books, I wasn’t able to get them all reviewed and scheduled prior to this post going live. Hopefully I’ll do better in December, though I highly doubt it.

    November planned reads…

    1. HOW TO BE BRAVE by E. Katherine Kottaras – releases November 3rd. Read & Reviewed.
    2. TEN THOUSAND SKIES ABOVE YOU by Claudia Gray – releases November 3rd. Read & Reviewed.
    3. GABRIEL by Nikki Kelly – released October 27th
    4. THE GIRL WHO COULD NOT DREAM by Sarah Beth Durst – releases November 3rd. Read & Reviewed.
    5. SOUNDLESS by Richelle Mead – releases November 10th
    6. AVENUE OF MYSTERIES by John Irving – releases November 3rd
    7. LOVE AND OTHER ALIEN EXPERIENCES by Kerry Winfrey – releases November 10th. Read & Reviewed.
    8. HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN by James Lee Burke – releases December 1st. Read. Review TK 12.8.15.

    Additional reads…

    1. DANGEROUS LIES by Becca Fitzpatrick – releases November 10th. Read & Reviewed.
    2. NEED by Joelle Charbonneau – releases November 3rd. Read & Reviewed.
    3. RULES FOR 50/50 CHANCES by Kate McGovern – releases November 24th. Read & Reviewed.
    4. SWEET RUIN by Kresley Cole – releases December 1st. Read & Reviewed.
    5. DIRTY DEEDS by Megan Erickson – releases December 8th. Read & Reviewed.
    6. SCHISM by Jenna Black – releases November 18th. Read. Review TK 12.3.15.

I only read five of my planned eight reads and only reviewed four of them in November. I just didn’t have time to get GABRIEL and AVENUE OF MYSTERIES on the pile though I really, really wanted to read them both. And I set aside SOUNDLESS as I just wasn’t able to get into it. But I’m still hopeful that someday it will grab my interest.

I was able to read all my additional planned reads, though my review for SCHISM isn’t scheduled yet so I’m not counting it toward my November reviews.

I also re-read THE GIFTED DEAD by Jenna Black, but as I am not reviewing it, I’m not counting it toward the challenge.

And while I probably shouldn’t be including my review for SWEET RUIN in this month’s tally, as it was read and reviewed in November, and scheduled for later today, I am counting it toward my November challenge reads.

    My December Reads.

I am only going to plan to read five books in December, though I really hope to read a few more. But December is always busy at work and I’m going to be completely offline and/or without bookish access from December 3rd through the 15th. So…

    Here are my planned reads:

It’s a short list and I have a feeling a few of those reads will change. Especially if I decide to tackle some of those November and December review books I wasn’t able to. But I’m kind of hoping I’ll be able to do the five planned reads and those missed reads. Fingers crossed.

    What about you?

What review books are you hoping to tackle this last month of the quarter-long challenge? What review books do you have that are releasing this month that you’d love to read and review but know you can’t?

    The Link-up.

Thank you all for signing up for this challenge and for sharing your review links. Good luck this month! I hope you tackle even more books than you’d hoped.

    Happy review book reading!

How I Did With My October Reads.

I am very happy to say that I killed it in October – I read and reviewed a total of 12 books. While I didn’t end up reading and reviewing all of my planned reads, I did read and review most of them and read a few more than planned.

    October planned reads…

    1. NAMELESS by Jennifer Jenkins – releases October 6th. Read & Reviewed.
    2. AGAINST ALL ODDS by Patricia Vanasse – released September 25th.
    3. IF YOU WRONG US by Dawn Klehr – releases October 8th. Read & Reviewed.
    4. BLACK WIDOW: FOREVER RED by Margaret Stohl – releases October 13th. Read & Reviewed.
    5. FIRST & THEN by Emma Mills – releases October 13th. Read & Reviewed.
    6. ICE LIKE FIRE by Sara Raasch – releases October 13th. Read & Reviewed.
    7. FROSH: FIRST BLUSH by Mónica Wagner – releases October 20th. Read & Reviewed.
    8. MISSING DIXIE by Caisey Quinn – releases October 27th. Read & Reviewed.
    9. PERSUASION by Martina Boone – releases October 27th. Read & Reviewed.

    Additional reads…

    1. THE ROSE SOCIETY by Marie Lu – releases October 13th. Read & Reviewed.
    2. ROMANCING THE DARK IN THE CITY OF LIGHT by Ann Jacobs – released October 6th. Read & Reviewed.
    3. A SONG FOR ELLA GREY by David Almond – releases October 13th. Read & Reviewed.
    4. UNSPOKEN by C.C. Hunter – releases October 27th. Read & Reviewed.

I read eight of the nine books I’d planned on reading for this month’s challenge. The only book I didn’t read was one I actually set aside for the time being. I got 15% of the way through the book but I just couldn’t read on due to the dreadful editing job. I’m actually rather appalled at the publisher for doing such a disservice to this author. I plan on trying to finish reading it next month, but unless things drastically improve it won’t receive high marks.

I also re-read a couple review books – LEAVING AMARILLO and LOVING DALLAS by Caisey Quinn, but as I didn’t review them, I’m not counting them toward this challenge.

And I technically read another book in October, but as my review won’t post until later today, I’m not counting it toward my October challenge.

    My November Reads.

November is always a crazy month. And as I also plan on doing some writing this month, I’m lowering my review book total to 8 for the month. Here are my planned reads:

Just like last month, it feels kind of ambitious. Especially as two of the books on my list are quite lengthy. But as I’ve already read one of the November books and am currently reading another, this should make it that much easier to tackle the planned reads.

Though I would really, really love to read HELLRAISERS by Alexander Gordon Smith before its release on December 1. And I am definitely going to be reading PASSENGER by Alexandra Bracken, though I probably won’t be posting the review until December.

    What about you?

What review books are you hoping to tackle this second month of the quarter-long challenge? What review books do you have that are releasing this month that you’d love to read and review but know you can’t?

    The Link-up.

Thank you all for signing up for this challenge and for sharing your review links. Good luck this month! I hope you tackle even more books than you’d hoped.

    Happy review book reading!

    ** END OF UPDATE**

    My October Reads.

As this is a shorter reading challenge, and I anticipate November and December being kind of crazy, I’m hoping to tackle at least the nine review books listed below this month.

It feels kind of ambitious. But as I’m on tours for all of them, and have mandatory reviews required for some of them, it’s a goal I desperately want to reach.

    What about you?

What review books are you hoping to tackle this first month of the quarter-long challenge? What review books do you have that are releasing this month that you’d love to read and review but know you can’t?

Q4 Review Pile Reading Challenge Sign-ups

    Horizontal

Welcome to the Q4 Review Pile Reading Challenge!

The first three quarters of the year were just so crazy I knew I wouldn’t be able to host a year-long event like I did last year with the 2014 RPRC. But things should be getting quieter as the year comes to a close so I thought it would be the perfect time to host this mini-challenge.

It’s also kind of necessary for me as my review pile just keeps growing and I’d love to be able to shrink it down just a little bit before the year ends. And I hope you’ll join me for the last three months of the year in trying to tackle your review piles.

    The Challenge.

The purpose of this challenge is to tackle the books on your review pile. They can be books you received from publishers or authors, grabbed from NetGalley or Edelweiss, or picked up at a convention or a conference with the intent of reading and reviewing them.

The result (hopefully) of joining this challenge is to reduce those review piles and to feel a lot less guilty by the time 2016 comes around.

    The Deets.

    • The Q4 RPRC runs from October 1st – December 31st, 2015
    • Sign-ups will remain open until December 1st, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific
    • Grab the button to show off your participation – optional
    • You DO NOT have to have a blog to join this challenge. You just need to have some books received for review and a place online to review them
    • Create a sign-up post announcing your intention to participate and link up below. If you do not have a blog, you can link up to your Goodreads profile that shows your Q4 RPRC shelf or you can create a post on Facebook announcing your intent to participate
    • Please link back to Fiktshun in your sign-up posts
    • This challenge is meant to help clear up books you’ve received for review. Any format, or any length, as long as you received the book specifically for review, is allowed
    • There will be a kick-off post on October 1st where you’ll be able to leave your October review links. There will be a new post at the beginning of each month of the challenge where you’ll be able to leave links to your monthly reviews
    • If you forget to leave your review link in the challenge month in which you reviewed the book or the linky list closed before you had a chance to leave it, you can leave it in a future month. (No duplicates.)
    • There will also be monthly giveaways – make sure you check in each month!
    • Use the hashtag #Q4RPRC2015 to share your progress and connect with other participants on Twitter

    The Levels.

As this is a shorter challenge than last year, there are fewer levels and you will not have to meet your level goals in order to be considered a successful participant. But setting a goal is always a good way to begin a challenge, so here they are – and feel free to mention which level you’re aiming for in your sign-up post:

    • 1-8 – Star
    • 9-16 – Rockstar
    • 17-24 – Superstar
    • 25 and up – Boss

I’m shooting for Superstar, but I would love to tackle this challenge like a boss.

    The Schedule.

    Oct. 1 – Kick-off + October Reviews
    Nov. 1 – November Reviews
    Dec. 1 – December Reviews
    Jan. 1, 2016 – Wrap-up + Giveaway

    The Sign-up Giveaway.

2014 Review Pile Reading Challenge Wrap Up + Winners Announced

    ReviewPile_challenge_BIG

2014 has ended and so has the 2014 Review Pile Reading Challenge. I can’t thank my co-host Reanna of Phantasmic Reads enough for helping to make this challenge super successful. Be sure to head over to her blog to read her wrap up post!

And I also owe a huge thank you to everyone who participated during this year-long challenge. Without you all I never would have had the drive to tackle as many review books as I did.

    December Reads

    1. Sekrit Book. Read 12.4.14. Reviewed 12.4.14.
    2. SUSPICION by Alexandra Monir. Read 12.7.14. Reviewed 12.9.14.
    3. ZODIAC by Romina Russell. Read 12.9.14. Reviewed 12.12.14.
    4. IGNITE by Sara B. Larson. Read 12.10.14. Reviewed 12.30.14.
    5. TRANSCENDENT by Lesley Livingston. Read 12.16.14. Reviewed 12.23.14.
    6. MAYHEM by Jamie Shaw. Read 12.19.14. Review TK 1.5.15.
    7. THE SIN EATER’S DAUGHTER by Melinda Salisbury. Read 12.30.14. Review TK in February.

    My Totals

I read 90 review books this year which seems to comprise most of my reads. And I managed to review 54 of them which isn’t too bad given the fact that for the first six months of the challenge I hardly reviewed any books at all.

I wanted to average 8 books per month and I came up just a little bit short. But I’m not disappointed in the number of books I did read, though I would have loved to have matched that number in reviews. Hopefully I’ll be able to improve upon that in 2015.

    October Replacement Winner

I never did hear back from the winner for the October giveaway for 2 books of the winner’s choice (up to $40 USD) from Amazon or The Book Depository. So I ran the numbers from the Linky List through Random again and the winner is…

#46 Books of Love for their review of A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray.

Please email me at fiktshun [at] gmail [dot] com by January 11th with your selections and address details and I will order them for you.

    December Winner

The winner for the December giveaway for 2 books of the winner’s choice (up to $40 USD) from Amazon or The Book Depository is…

#58 In Love With Handmade for their review of Top Ten Clues You’re Clueless by Liz Czukas.

Please email me at fiktshun [at] gmail [dot] com by January 11th with your selections and address details and I will order them for you.

    Fiktshun’s Challenge Winner

While there was no end-of-challenge giveaway planned, I have decided to add one as a thanks to everyone who took part in the event this past year. The prize is for up to $60 in Books of the Winner’s Choice from Amazon or The Book Depository.

And the surprise winner for the RPRC Challenge here on Fiktshun – taken from ALL the names on the Linky Lists from January through December and run through Random – is…

The Reader Lines for their review of Panic by Lauren Oliver.

Please email me at fiktshun [at] gmail [dot] com by January 11th with your selections and address details and I will order them for you.

Thank You and That’s a Wrap

Thanks again so much to everyone who signed up and participated in the challenge this year. I like to think that the challenge was not only fun but productive. It’s always nice to have a little extra incentive and motivation to tackle those huge review piles. I hope this challenge gave you that push to read a few more review books than you might otherwise have read.

Here’s to a fantastic 2015 in which those review piles get just a little bit smaller because the books on those piles are just so amazing that you can’t resist the opportunity to read them all.

    October & November Reads

As previously mentioned, since I’d been posting every other month, I have two months worth of bookish reads to share. I managed to read most of my planned October reads, but did not read one of the two books I’d hoped to read in November. And while I did not review all of the titles I did read, I managed to review most of them and review a couple of books I’d read earlier – LAILAH and EXQUISITE CAPTIVE. Hopefully I’ll be able to review the remaining books early this month. (Fingers are crossed. Tightly.)

And while December is typically a crazy month, I am hoping to tackle eight review books instead of my usual four. Though I won’t be posting reviews for a few of them until closer to their release dates.

    Anyway…

My reads in October & November were…

    1. LOVE ME TO DEATH by Marissa Clarke. Read 10.2.14. Review 10.18.14.
    2. THE FALL by Bethany Griffin. Read 10.5.14. Review 10.12.14.
    3. THE STARS NEVER RISE by Rachel Vincent. Re-read 10.9.14. Review 10.17.14.
    4. CHASING POWER by Sarah Beth Durst. Read 10.11.14. Review 10.14.14.
    5. LOOP by Karen Akins. Read 10.19.14. Review 10.22.14.

I am surprised that I read 19 review books in the past couple of months. Especially as I also read a few non-review books, too. November was almost a total dud. I did manage to read a few review books but barely got any reviews written. My technology-free week the first week in November kind of spilled over into the second week, leaving me very little time to actually read and blog and review. And with an unexpected visitor in town the third week of November, it basically left me with the week of Thanksgiving. So, no. Not much time at all.

    December Reads

I was doing fairly well with the whole read and review thing on the new blog in October. Not so much November, as mentioned above. But I am hoping to get back on track this December, though I will have family in town for the holidays, so I’m going to have to try and tackle everything planned during the first three-and-a-half weeks of this month.

I’m kind of not really in the mood to read anything in particular. Once I start reading a book, I end up getting drawn in, but finding a genre that grabs me has been tough. I blame The Raven Cycle series. There’s just something about reading books by Maggie Stiefvater that puts me in the mood for different, quirky, bizarre, haunting, original, unusual.

So I’m not entirely sure I’ll be able to stay on plan. But here goes. And yes, I have quite a few reads planned that are not December releases.

    My planned reads are…

I am going for eight books this month, instead of four. It’s ambitious, I know, but what the heck.

TRANSCENDENT by Lesley Livingston (releases December 23 2014)

IGNITE by Sara B. Larson (releases December 30 2014)

THE DARKEST PART OF THE FOREST by Holly Black (releases January 13 2015)

RED QUEEN by Victoria Aveyard (releases February 10 2015)

THE WINNER’S CRIME by Marie Rutkoski (releases March 3 2015)

HALF WILD by Sally Green (releases March 24 2015)

FALL WITH ME by Jennifer L. Armentrout (releases March 31 2015)

DREAM A LITTLE DREAM by Kerstin Gier (releases April 14 2015)

    What about you?
