    Description…

When the resurrectionists of Fissure’s Whipp begin disappearing, eighteen-year-old Allie knows someone is after their blood—or, more accurately, the genetic mutation that allows their blood to heal wounds, save lives and even bring back the recently deceased.

Raised by her aunt after her parents’ deaths, Allie knows staying vigilant means staying alive. She’s trained her whole life to protect herself by any means necessary, from self defense classes to extensive weapons training in knives. Now, she’s gone so far as to befriend a homeless boy named Ploy who unknowingly trades a few nights a week on her couch in exchange for being a human tripwire to those hunting her.

But as Allie and Ploy’s feelings for each other grow, Allie realizes this time, she’ll need more than fighting skills and a sharp blade to beat a villain literally out for blood.

Protecting a girl he shouldn’t love, from a threat he understands too well, Ploy must face his past to save his future in Allie’s world—a world where bringing back the dead can cost you your life.

Note: This review is based on an eARC received from the author’s publicist in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    Book Thoughts

If you’ve ever read anything by Author Leah Clifford you know it’s going to be unique. And a bit dark. And a whole lot awesome. Well that pretty much sums up VIAL THINGS. It’s all you really need to know. Of course, if you want to know more…

While you may have read stories about resurrection, the method is fascinating. Clifford created a very distinct process with strict limitations and rules that she adheres to. It is definitely not for the squeamish – things get pretty messy at times. (Though if you’re reading a book whose title font is written in blood, you’re probably not one of those readers.) But it is a key component of this story and presents quite a few challenges for the main character.

You also may have read stories that had mystery, thrills, action. But with Clifford’s distinctive voice, her characters really make this thrilling, mysterious and action-packed story memorable and addictive and exciting. Told from both Allie and Ploy’s POVs you’ll get to know their secrets, fall in love with them, feel protective of them. You will definitely be hoping for the best possible outcome even if you think it might be impossible.

It took all of twelve seconds for me to become hooked. The author got my interest with the play on words title and the blood drenched cover. She had my curiosity piqued by the very first sentence telling of a late night job and an accidental death. And she had me hooked with the character’s no-nonsense first words – “Time of death?” – to the crying girl she encounters.

And I remained riveted throughout. From its “icky” moments to its “wow” moments. From its nail biters to its heartbreaks. From the suspense. From the surprises. From the twists and turns.

I could not have loved this story more. (Well, maybe I could have if I had the next book in the series to dive into and didn’t have to wait. But that wouldn’t be fair to this story.) I loved that it was messy and gruesome at times. I loved that the characters were kick-ass and edgy and distrusting and secretive and dirty and a touch odd. And I loved that the author made me believe in her reality – where resurrection is possible and there are people whose job it is to give their life’s blood to make it so.

I cannot recommend VIAL THINGS enough to anyone who isn’t afraid to read about needles, blood, or the gory stuff, and who loves reads that are interesting and different and amazing.

    The Read-Along

    My Thoughts on Chapters 28-36

I knew that I would be devouring this week’s chapters immediately after last week’s post went live. I couldn’t wait to see how everything ended, even though I knew that much was going to be left open for the next book. And I wasn’t wrong.

These final nine chapters were about as short as those last week, but were packed full of all kinds of shocks and surprises. And that ending has left me questioning everything I thought I knew.

A dirty secret is revealed about one of the girls by someone hell-bent on her destruction. The police take their investigation to a whole new level based on “evidence” they have against another girl. One of the girls makes a decision about her relationship that seriously complicates things and could affect her future. One discovers that getting rid of her nemesis won’t be as easy as she thought it would be. And one finds out that the person she thought she could trust is instead someone she should fear.

As the risk of being discovered for their part in Nolan’s death grows, the girls decide to take matters into their own hands and search for the evidence they need against their suspect. But their attempt to find proof doesn’t end in the way they hoped it would, leaving them in even more trouble than before.

The story ends with even more questions than at the start, with even more suspects, even more enemies, even more complications than there were when Nolan Hotchkiss was alive. And it leaves things open for an equally exciting, must read sequel. A sequel that I will definitely be reading in one sitting versus over the course of four weeks.

Thanks for stopping by to check out what I thought about THE PERFECTIONISTS. If you’ve read it – or are planning to read it – I hope you love it as much as I do. And I hope the wait for the sequel won’t be as torturous as I know it will be for me.

    The Read-Along

    My Thoughts on Chapters 19-27

This week’s chapters were a bit shorter than last week’s and were a lightning fast read, which means I may have accidentally read ahead by a chapter or two. But I’ll be keeping my lips sealed on what happens in those later chapters… for now.

The girls continue to pursue their suspect, hoping to find evidence which will prove to the police that they’re not to blame. But with more information about the cause of Nolan’s death revealed, it opens up the list of potential suspects to practically everyone.

And with several so-called friends, enemies and authority figures exhibiting suspicious behavior, they can’t just rule everyone out no matter how sure they are that Nolan’s killer is who they think it is.

Keeping secrets is putting a strain on all of them. But some of the girls have it worse than others due to threats they received and betrayals they didn’t see coming.

As much of the information revealed in these chapters is incredibly spoiler-y, I’m trying to be as vague as possible. So I can’t reveal what happened to Parker during her therapy sessions. I can’t talk about what revelation Caitlin had and whether or not it was good or bad. I can’t talk about what encounters Julie had that could destroy everything for her. I can’t share what threat Ava received and from whom.

And I can’t discuss what happened with Mackenzie’s audition and what she learned about Claire.

I can say that this story is becoming even more addictive than it has been. It’s getting more exciting. Things are getting even more complicated and dangerous for each of the girls. And with not that many pages remaining, I have a feeling this book will leave me hanging off a pretty major cliff.

With just one week’s worth of reads left in the read-along, I plan on continuing to the very end instead of waiting until closer to next week’s post. But I will keep silent as to what happens next.

Well… at least until next Tuesday…

    The Read-Along

    My Thoughts on Chapters 10-18

I thought the first nine chapters were a quick read, but they were nothing compared to how fast I managed to blaze through this week’s chapters.

We learn more about Julie’s shameful secret. We get a peek into Parker’s less than stellar life. We discover that a certain character, who has appeared to be less than honest, has in fact been telling lies and is the very opposite of a friend.

And we find out that there is a total creeper at Beacon Heights High.

The girls find a potential suspect, though it’s not who the police have in their sights. And with some new information revealed to them about the cause of Nolan’s death, they’ll have to find proof to back up their suspicions.

So far, THE PERFECTIONISTS is an insanely good and wildly entertaining read. I adore each of the characters whose POVs we get to see and I love learning more about them as the story unfolds. Though I don’t quite trust these narrators fully. Everyone has a motive, including Julie, Ava, Mackenzie, Parker and Caitlin. And they all have a totally legit reason to have taken that next step from prank to murder.

But then it seems that everyone in Beacon Hills has reason to want Nolan Hotchkiss dead.

I am officially addicted to and totally invested in Sara Shepard’s newest novel. And setting it down in order to share my thoughts for this week’s post and in order not to read ahead is torturous. The eighty-four pages for this week’s read is not nearly enough time to spend with this story and these characters. I have a feeling I may end up caving mid-week and getting a jump on next week’s read.

I don’t know what’s in store for the girls, whether their sleuthing will get them in more trouble than they’re already in, whether the police will find something that definitively leads back to them, whether a new suspect will come to light, whether they’ll all start to turn on one another in the next nine chapters.

But I cannot wait to find out.

    Until next Tuesday….

    The Read-Along

My Thoughts on the Prologue and Chapters 1-9

The prologue sets things up perfectly. It introduces the characters – Caitlin Martell-Lewis, Julie Redding, Ava Jalali, Mackenzie Wright and Parker Duvall – all of whom have something against the not-at-all-innocent and majorly douchey victim, Nolan Hotchkiss. It sets the stage – a plan is put into motion, a boy ends up dead, and there is a witness who may also be the killer.

In the first nine chapters – told in alternating POVs for each of the five girls who plotted revenge against Nolan – some of their history with Nolan is brought to light, establishing motive, additional characters are introduced, all of whom are potential suspects, and more about each of them is revealed.

Everyone has a reason to want Nolan Hotchkiss dead. Many have a reason to want Caitlin or Julie or Ava or Mac or Parker to go down for the crime. So who did it? Who killed Nolan Hotchkiss? Well, even though I have my suspicions I won’t be revealing what they are. And the story certainly doesn’t divulge its secrets it in the first nine chapters. So it’s just a matter of waiting and seeing.

Could it be the girl who he wouldn’t give the time of day to? The girl he used and humiliated? The girl he cheated on and spread rumors about? The girl who lost someone she loved because of him? The girl whose family he destroyed? Or maybe it was the girl who lost every part of who she used to be?

    Maybe it was someone else.

So far, THE PERFECTIONISTS is a super quick and thoroughly entertaining read. That prologue immediately grabbed me. The mystery aspect has kept me engaged. The story is suspenseful – so much so that I desperately want to pick the book back up right now and read ahead instead of read along.

And I can’t wait to see what happens in the next nine chapters and whether anything leads the police back to Julie, Caitlin, Ava, Mackenzie and/or Parker.

With only around one-third of the book down and two-thirds remaining, there’s plenty of story left to tell, secrets to be revealed, motives to be uncovered, and characters to fall under suspicion.

    Until next Tuesday….

I am so excited to be one of today’s final stops on the THIS SUMMER Blog Tour in which I have an awesome guest post by Author Katlyn Duncan on her favorite scene to write and where I share a few of my thoughts about the book.

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this book with its super cute cover and its promise of romance. It sounded like the perfect summer read. And if you’d like to get just a peek at what this book has to offer, be sure to check out the guest post below to read a short passage.

The author picked the lake scene as her favorite to write and while I adore that scene, my favorite involved a party, rain, a wet t-shirt and a locked door. Beyond that I’ll say no more.

    The THIS SUMMER Trailer

Favorite Scene to Write in THIS SUMMER

My favorite scene to write from THIS SUMMER is the lake scene. I am not going to spoil it for anyone so I will be quite vague, but this scene took me a while to navigate because I wanted to get it just right.

At this point Will and Hadley have been dancing around their chemistry and when they are taken away from their hometown they are given a chance to breathe and the sparks crackle. Neither are able to deny their attraction to the other (especially with bathing suits involved!) and this is their final tipping point. It’s a question of “will they?” or “won’t they?” and I really enjoyed the push and pull of this scene in particular.

I was able to visualize the scene playing out as if on a movie screen right in front of me, which is something I look for in every scene. But this one in particular sticks out to me. Will is a bit more playful and the flirty banter between the two was really fun to write. It shows the reader a bit more of how they used to act with each other prior to that fateful summer.

And my hope for the end of the scene is to have the reader on the edge of his or her seat wondering what’s going to happen next!

    Here is a little taste:

“Well you can’t come into the water and expect not to get wet,” he says in a low voice.

“And here I thought you were a Southern gentleman.”

He inhales sharply, wading his body around mine. “It seems you have the wrong impression of me. I’m not as nice as I seem.”

I roll my eyes. “You might think you’re a rugged cowboy, but I still see you underneath the surface.”

“Do you now?” His hand brushes across my arm.

“Yup,” I say quickly, my breath catching in my throat.

“I might have to work on my rugged cowboy persona a little more then?”

I inhale sharply. “Well, I do like the accent.”

Our bodies brush up against each other again as he swims around to my front. “Is that all?”

“That’s pretty much it,” I say with a grin.

“When did you become so superficial?” he teases.

“Oh come on. We both know how gorgeous you are.”

“And here I thought I was a rugged cowboy. Gorgeous is reserved for those of the female persuasion.”

His hand breaks the surface and brushes against my cheek.

My breath hitches and I’m frozen in place. His eyes move over my lips, up my nose and finally reach my eyes. Neither of us breathe. His other hand reaches out to my hand, the touch scorching me.

“Hadley.” My name on his lips is filled with the same want and need that’s inside of me.

    My Thoughts

THIS SUMMER is a light, fun and sweet romance with a dash of heat. It’s a love story that reignites a spark that had only just begun to burn between Hadley and Will before his sudden departure from Hadley’s life. Told from both Hadley and Will’s perspectives, readers will get to see just what Will’s secrets are, whether Hadley has the “summer to remember” she wanted, and whether they’re both looking for a summer fling or hoping for something more.

When Will left two years ago, with no explanation and no calls, texts or emails since, Hadley was nearly destroyed. And just when she thought she’d picked up the pieces of her shattered self, as suddenly as he left he comes back into her life threatening to tear her apart all over again.

But she’s not the same girl he left behind. She’s not about to let her heart get broken again. She planned on having an amazing summer, creating memories to last a lifetime. And it’s still what she intends to do, no matter how good he looks, how easy it is to reconnect with him or how electric that connection is.

THIS SUMMER was a super quick and delightful read that made me smile. I enjoyed the dual POVs as it gave me insight into both characters about their pasts together and separately, their presents, and what they thought and felt about one another. I loved that the author used the camp setting as the backdrop to her story as it made it a little different, made it feel very much like a summer romance, and provided another connection between the characters’ presents and their pasts. And I adored the romance. It was charming and a little bit sexy and a little bit heartbreaking.

All the major loose ends are tied up at the end of the story, though I was left with a few questions about some of the secondary characters and wished a few pages were dedicated to fleshing out their stories. But Will and Hadley’s story ended on just the right note… what that note is, I won’t reveal.

For readers looking for an engaging, lightning fast and heartwarming love story, THIS SUMMER is a wonderful way to spend a few hours.

Note: Sneak peek received courtesy of the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

    Description…

From the glittering streets of Manhattan to the moonlit rooftops of Paris, falling in love is easy for hopeless dreamer Isla and introspective artist Josh. But as they begin their senior year in France, Isla and Josh are quickly forced to confront the heartbreaking reality that happily-ever-afters aren’t always forever.

Their romantic journey is skillfully intertwined with those of beloved couples Anna and Étienne and Lola and Cricket, whose paths are destined to collide in a sweeping finale certain to please fans old and new.

    My Thoughts

Whether you’ve met Isla and Josh before or this will be your very first introduction, they will be characters you’ll instantly reconnect or connect with and completely fall in love with.

The writing in this short five chapter sneak peek is some of Author Stephanie Perkins’ best. There is a wonderful cadence and the dialogue is sweet and funny and awkward which makes Isla absolutely endearing. Right from the start.

This short peek at ISLA AND THE HAPPILY EVER AFTER was my very first time experiencing Stephanie Perkins’ writing. And it was perfect. It hit every one of my must haves. A start that instantly grabs. Writing that’s clever and funny and sweet. Characters I can connect with, root for, become invested in. A story that makes me not want to put it down.

And I didn’t want to. At all. I might have screamed when I reached the end, because I had become so caught up in the story that I didn’t notice it was coming to the end. Waiting until August 14th is going to be killer. Especially due to the fact that the point where the story left off is like a mini cliffhanger. Yes, the end of chapter five is guaranteed to make the wait absolutely torturous.

In just these five chapters I fell head-over-heels in love with the writing and the characters. From the very first I was hooked by both. So much so that as soon as I finished I grabbed my copy of ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS and devoured it in one sitting and I am currently reading LOLA AND THE BOY NEXT DOOR.

While I wouldn’t normally rate only five chapters of a book, I couldn’t imagine not giving this story at least an “amazing” rating. I’ll await my read of the full-length novel, however, to see if it is an “off-the-menu” six-star read. I have a feeling it will be.

    Reviewer gives this sneak peek…

    5star

And for just a tease. It’s writing like this that made me fall in love.

I can’t imagine Josh falling for someone vanilla.

Not that Josh would ever fall for me.

But I wouldn’t want to ruin any chance.

    Even though I don’t have a chance.

But just in case I do.

    Even though I don’t.
