From Unhooked author Lisa Maxwell comes a captivating new world filled with magic and deception, about a girl who must travel back in time to find a mysterious book that could save her future.

Stop the Magician.
Steal the book.
Save the future.

In modern day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

Character Profile: Jianyu Lee

Jianyu Lee

I have not been in this country for very long, but it did not take more than a few months to realize that I never should never have come to this city. I was smuggled through Canada on a journey paid for by Tom Lee, the mayor of Chinatown. But no one warned me about the Brink. No one warned me that Tom Lee’s organization, the On Leong Tong, was more than a benevolent society. But I had no interest in being his weapon against those who could not defend themselves. This city is not kind to outsiders, but Dolph Saunders offered me a place with his crew. I am not sure that I can trust him. I am not sure I can trust anyone, but what are my choices? I might have become one of The Devil’s Own, but I remain watchful and wear a face the world does not question as I wait and hope for something more.

The heat of well-peppered dishes. The sunlight at daybreak. The sense of invincibility I have when I pull light around myself and walk like a ghost, unseen, in the city streets.

Living under a name that is not my own.

My affinity is for light, and my magic calls to that which illuminates this world. I can bend the light around myself and disappear.

Patience. The right opportunity will present itself.
