I am so unbelievably excited to be kicking off the blog tour for BLACKSOULS by Nicole Castroman. It has been one of my most anticipated reads for 2017 – and it was even better than I could have hoped for. And, no, it’s not because I am a sailor and love any and all stories involving sailing ships. Or because I have always loved stories about pirates. Or because this cover is so awesome.
It’s because the book is more than amazing. And if you’d like to know why, stop back tomorrow for my off-the-menu 6-star review.
But for my stop on the tour I have five mini guest posts to share about this incredible sequel, its characters, and its fabulous author.
There is also a tour-wide giveaway for a signed copy of BLACKSOULS. So if you’re in the US and you’d like the chance to win, enter in the Rafflecopter.
And if you haven’t yet checked out the description for this action-packed sequel that promises to be riveting from page one, it follows immediately below.

Nicole Castroman brings the dangerous pirate ports of the Caribbean to life in this vibrant sequel to Blackhearts—the reimagined origin story of history’s most infamous pirate, Blackbeard.
Edward “Teach” Drummond is setting sail to the Caribbean as first mate on the most celebrated merchant ship in the British fleet—until he rebels against his captain. Mutiny is a capital offense and Teach knows it could cost him his life, but he believes it worth the risk in order to save his crew from the attacking Spanish ships.
Sailing on the same blue waters, Anne barely avoids the Spanish attack, making it safely to Nassau. But lawless criminals, corrupt politics, and dangerous intentions fill the crowded streets of this Caribbean port. Soon, Anne discovers that the man entrusted to keep the peace is quite possibly the most treacherous of them all—and he just happens to hold Teach’s fate in his terrifying hands.
Life and death hang in the balance when Teach and Anne are given a dangerous mission. It’s a mission that will test their love, loyalty, and devotion, forcing them down a path neither one could have ever imagined.

Most Challenging Scene to Write in BLACKSOULS (and Why)
The most challenging scene to write in BLACKSOULS was definitely a scene with Anne. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I will say that I teared up as I wrote it. Actually, there were a couple of Anne’s scenes that made me tear up. BLACKSOULS takes place in the West Indies, during the Atlantic slave trade. During my research, I read accounts of slavery and was horrified by what I read. The conditions they were forced to endure were unspeakable. Disgusting doesn’t even begin to describe how slaves were treated, and I tried so hard to be sensitive and respectful to Anne’s narrative.
On Writing BLACKSOULS – the differences/challenges/benefits of/involved in writing this sequel
My answer to this question definitely ties into the first question about the difficulty of writing some of Anne’s scenes. BLACKSOULS takes place in the West Indies at the end of the 17th century, during the Atlantic slave trade. There was no way I could ignore that aspect of the story. Yes, BLACKHEARTS and BLACKSOULS are my idea of Blackbeard’s origin story, but they’re also about Anne, the girl Teach falls in love with. It was important to me to be true to historical aspects, even if it wasn’t an easy topic. Some people have said Anne has very modern views, but if anyone has ever read any accounts of slavery, they would know that from the beginning, slaves fought against slavery. They didn’t just accept their fate. They tried to fight and resist, however they could, in any way they could.

In this stunningly creative debut “filled with well-drawn characters…and smoldering passion,” (Booklist) Nicole Castroman reimagines the origins of history’s most infamous pirate—Blackbeard.
When Edward “Teach” Drummond, son of one of Bristol’s richest merchants, returns home from a year at sea, he finds his life in shambles. Betrothed to a girl he doesn’t love and sick of the high society he was born into, all Teach wants is to return to the vast ocean he calls home. There’s just one problem: he must convince his father to let him leave and never come back.
Following the death of her parents, Anne Barrett is left penniless. Though she’s barely worked a day in her life, Anne takes a job as a maid in the home of Master Drummond. Lonely days stretch into weeks and Anne longs to escape the confines of her now mundane life. How will she ever achieve her dream of sailing to Curaçao—her mother’s birthplace—when she’s trapped in England?
From the moment Teach and Anne meet, they set the world ablaze. Drawn together by a shared desire for freedom, but kept apart by Teach’s father, their love is as passionate as it is forbidden. Faced with an impossible choice, Teach and Anne must decide whether to chase their dreams and leave England forever—or follow their hearts and stay together.
