The much anticipated sequel to the breathtaking The Wrath and the Dawn, lauded by Publishers Weekly as “a potent page-turner of intrigue and romance.”

I am surrounded on all sides by a desert. A guest, in a prison of sand and sun. My family is here. And I do not know whom I can trust.

In a land on the brink of war, Shahrzad has been torn from the love of her husband Khalid, the Caliph of Khorasan. She once believed him a monster, but his secrets revealed a man tormented by guilt and a powerful curse—one that might keep them apart forever. Reunited with her family, who have taken refuge with enemies of Khalid, and Tariq, her childhood sweetheart, she should be happy. But Tariq now commands forces set on destroying Khalid’s empire. Shahrzad is almost a prisoner caught between loyalties to people she loves. But she refuses to be a pawn and devises a plan.

While her father, Jahandar, continues to play with magical forces he doesn’t yet understand, Shahrzad tries to uncover powers that may lie dormant within her. With the help of a tattered old carpet and a tempestuous but sage young man, Shahrzad will attempt to break the curse and reunite with her one true love.

Renée Ahdieh On Writing the eNovellas

What was it like to write the e-novellas before the release of THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER? Was it fun to imagine the different perspectives, and did it make you think of your characters in a different way?

I had such a wonderful time writing the e-novellas! Of course any chance to write a pivotal scene from Khalid’s perspective is just amazing, as he’s such a complex character to write. Like a boy who hides his entire inner world all his life. I was always particularly struck by what Khalid must have been thinking when he first met Shahrzad. That scene in the audience hall was from Shahrzad’s perspective in THE WRATH & THE DAWN, so we only ever get the briefest glimpse into what Khalid must have been thinking. It was insanely fun to switch things up in the e-novellas and explore his thoughts and feelings in these pivotal moments. Also the second e-novella from Khalid’s perspective fills in some important gaps—specifically his thoughts and feelings when he returns to discover Rey decimated and Shahrzad gone. The way in which he assumes blame for each of these things is both very telling of his character and important information for how he intends to handle everything in THE ROSE & THE DAGGER. I hope everyone loves the e-novellas as much as I enjoyed writing them!

I probably had the most fun putting together Despina and Jalal’s backstory. I’d always had an idea of what might have transpired between them, but to really get the chance to flesh it out and give them their own solid narrative was a terrific experience. Plus, Despina schools Jalal so hard, and it literally had me laughing out loud as I wrote it. The great thing about these two characters is that—despite their discrepancies from the perspective of society, as one is cousin to the king and the other is a servant—they are both so evenly matched. Neither is the type to bow to the wind. And when they first meet, both of them are seeking something that haven’t yet found—a person willing to see through the veneer. Because both these characters are something else beneath the surface.
