UNSPOKEN by C.C. Hunter – Interview + Review

I am so excited to have Author C.C. Hunter on the blog today answering a few questions about UNSPOKEN, the final book in the Shadow Falls: After Dark series. As you may already know, I’m a huge fan of this author and both the Shadow Falls and Shadow Falls: After Dark series are favorites of mine. So I am just a tiny bit sad that there’s just one more full-length novel left with these beloved characters, but I am thrilled that I don’t have to say goodbye quite yet.

UNSPOKEN was an awesome read and this series about Della Tsang is fantastic. She managed to nudge Kylie aside and become my favorite female character in the Shadow Falls world because of these books – REBORN, ETERNAL and UNSPOKEN.

If you’d like to know what I thought about this series finale, my review follows a bit further down after the interview. And if you want to know which quotes of Della’s are C.C. Hunter’s favorites, which scene in UNSPOKEN is a favorite, a little bit more about what the author thinks of Della’s two love interests, and more, be sure to check out the interview.

These books are so much fun, super quick reads, promise mysteries, romance, humor, some truly wonderful characters, great writing, and a ton of smiles. If you haven’t yet discovered them, now is the perfect time to enter Shadow Falls.

The Interview

Q&A with Author C.C. Hunter

Q. In 25 words or less, what can readers expect from UNSPOKEN?

A wild ride of action, suspense, and love that’ll tug at your heart strings. A story of forgiveness, and unlikely friendships that’ll make you laugh.

Q. What has been your favorite part about writing the Shadow Falls: After Dark series/Della Tsang’s stories?

It’s Della. Her sassiness, her spunk, her spark. Okay, you know we all have a little smarta$$ inside of us. And when I write her, I get to bring my inner Della out and let it party. My husband calls it “Dellatude.” She’s loyal, she’ll always have your back, but she’s not the girlfriend, you ask, “Do these jeans make my butt look big?” Because that girl tells the truth, even when a white lie would have been appreciated. Writing her has been . . . as my grandmother would say, “a hoot and half.”

Q. Across both Shadow Falls series, who has been your favorite character to write (and why are they a favorite)? And who has been your most challenging character (and what were the challenges)?

Okay, I admit it. I love Burnett. He’s a grumpy, macho, sexy vampire. He drives Della crazy by being so over protective. But let me tell you, if he wasn’t in love with Holiday, I’d steal him. His character has slowly evolved in all the books. As a matter of fact, in Fierce, a novella included in Almost Midnight, out Feb. 2nd, you’ll discover a little more about his past and the reason he is the way he is. Now Fierce isn’t Burnett’s story, but rather a story of another character that was a challenge to write. But Fredericka Lakota demanded her own story. She bugged me until I finally just cratered. She wasn’t even a likely candidate, or even a likable character. She was Kylie’s nemesis—someone everyone wanted to root against. Yet, even archenemies have stories. Some of them, like Fredericka, even deserve to be redeemed. I never thought I’d find myself rooting for her, but boy howdy, when I learned her story, she got under my skin and into my heart.

Q. If you had to pick one scene, or one moment, from UNSPOKEN that was your favorite, what would it be?

That would be when Della and her father finally have their “talk.” There have been times when writing this series that I seriously considered killing Della’s dad. He was so hurtful to Della and it broke her heart and mine. But she loved that man wouldn’t let me whack him.

Q. Della and Chase have a rather… shall we say… complicated relationship. What do you think the biggest obstacles are for them to have a happily ever after? And, as the author, are you rooting for them or are you maybe rooting for the other boy in Della’s life?

Chase came into Della’s life under false pretenses—for good reason, but no one likes to be lied to. And Della, well, I don’t know if my readers have noticed, but she’s not exactly quick to forgive. If Chase is going to win her back, he’s gotta put up with some crap. And Della knows how to dish that out in big scoopfuls. Now as for who I’m rooting for…Whoever Della chooses. And I’m not saying more! LOL. But I can tell you this, in the Shadow Falls series, Della loves two guys—both are wonderful, caring and deserving of her love. One of them is a better choice for her. It’s not an easy choice. But in good fiction and in life, choosing the right path, and the right person, is never easy.

Q. Throughout both series, Della has had some great lines. What are your top three favorites? And has there been anything she said that made you shake your head and say, “Oh no!”?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ll be writing dialogue and think… Della, you can’t say that! But she’d say it, so I was required to write it.

* From Reborn—Della defending that women can do anything guys can do to Burnett: “I will respect the authority, when the authority respects me! And that includes my breasts!” However, in Unspoken, she’s really tired of having to defend this issue and she puts it in another more direct way. “Oh, please,” Della said. “Excuse me while I go and grow a penis so the sausage-and-meatball-toting gender will stop thinking I need a man to protect me.”

* From UnspokenDella telling a crouching man holding his boys. “Sorry,” Della said. “I think I’m allergic to perverts. I get involuntary knee jerks.”

* From Unspoken—Della’s dialogue to Miranda and Kylie when they walk in on a heated conversation between Della and Chase. “I’m going to bed. I don’t want to commiserate. I don’t want a diet soda. I don’t want to explain why it feels like the awkward fairy just came down here and pissed all over the room.”

Q. I understand that UNSPOKEN is the final full-length book in this series. Are there any plans for another spin-off series about one of the other Shadow Falls characters? Or are there plans for any new novellas?

Well, I told you about Fierce and Fredericka’s story. Right now, I’m working on Miranda’s book. The readers have already gotten into Miranda’s head in Spellbinder. Throughout the series they have watched Miranda come into her powers and overcome a lot of issues. In this last book, Miranda’s newfound powers will be tested. And she’ll have to make a decision between Perry and Shawn. And because this is the last book about Shadow Falls, all my characters will graduate.

Q. When ending a series what is the thing you miss most about it, what is the hardest thing for you to say goodbye to?

Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes. I’ve been with these characters for over five years. They have made me cry, laugh and inspired me. Yes, inspired me to change and to grow. I know that sounds crazy, because I wrote them. But when you write a character, you give them the best of you and then you can learn from how they handle the crisis that you also toss their way.

Thank you so much for the interview and sharing about Unspoken to your readers.

Fiktshun: Thank you for answering my questions and sharing some of my very favorite Della quotes and for letting me know about Miranda’s book! And I could not stop laughing when Della said that line about the sausage and meatballs in front of Burnett and Chase. *snicker*

About C.C. Hunter

CC_HunterC.C. Hunter grew up in Alabama, where she caught lightning bugs, ran barefoot, and regularly rescued potential princes, in the form of Alabama bullfrogs, from her brothers. Today, she’s still fascinated with lightning bugs, mostly wears shoes, but has turned her focus to rescuing mammals. She now lives in Texas with her four rescued cats, one dog, and a prince of a husband, who for the record, is so not a frog. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, spending time with her family, or is shooting things-with a camera, not a gun.

C.C. Hunter is a pseudonym. Her real name is Christie Craig and she also writes humorous romantic suspense romance novels for Grand Central.

C.C. would love to hear from you. Because of deadlines, it may take her a day or so to get back with you, but she will reply.

The Review

A perfect end to a fantastic series, UNSPOKEN delivers two exciting and danger-filled mysteries, a tumultuous love story, a caustic but lovable heroine, a charming and swoon-worthy if not entirely trustworthy male protagonist, an overprotective but heroic father figure, a couple of persistent ghosts, several beloved characters, humorous dialogue, great writing, and an emotional roller coaster ride or a few. It promises to be wildly entertaining, completely captivating, more than a little bit nerve-wracking, unputdownable. And it ties up all loose ends that pertain to Della, her family, her love interests, and the crimes she’s dead set on solving by the story’s end.

Della Tsang never meant for her father to become the prime suspect in the much too personal case she reopened and has yet to solve. But if she can’t find a way to prove his innocence – because he has to be innocent, right? – she’s not sure how she’ll be able to live with the guilt of being responsible for his incarceration and for destroying her family even more than she already has.

With an irate ghost absolutely certain he’s to blame, evidence mounting against him, and time running out, she won’t be able to clear his name on her own. Not without the help of Burnett and the FRU. And not without Chase Tallman, the vampire who she hoped to never see again, who broke her heart and her trust, who claims to have information that could lead to the killer and exonerate her father.

As long as she can ignore their bond and the feelings she may or may not still have for him, she’ll be okay. She has to be. Because with her father all but having given up on his own defense, she’s the only one left capable of fighting for him.

C.C. Hunter does a marvelous job re-immersing readers into the Shadow Falls world and re-connecting them with her story and characters. In the first few pages she will make them laugh, tug at their heartstrings, and ensnare them with a new mystery for Della to investigate.

She allows them to see even more of what’s going on by telling the story from both Della’s and Chase’s point of view. With Della, she gives them a stubborn and determined and headstrong character who is also funny and vulnerable and eager to make things right. With Chase, she reveals someone who is remorseful, desperate for forgiveness but anxious that it won’t ever happen, and who wants to be the vampire that Della needs him to be.

The result is a story that is immediately engaging, positively delightful, edge-of-your-seat suspenseful, laugh-out-loud hilarious, and utterly riveting.

UNSPOKEN is a must for fans of this series, for readers who love their heroines with a bit of an attitude, a touch of snark, the ability to kick some a**, and who guard their heart, for those who enjoy a not-so-easy to solve mystery, for those who love their romances stormy, sizzling, and not instantly decided, and for those readers that insist upon a well-rounded cast of characters, a well-developed world, and truly wonderful writing.
