Rae Carson Read-Along: THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS Chapters 1-11 + Giveaway

I am so excited to be taking part in the Rae Carson Read-Along with a few awesome bloggers this summer, leading up to the release of the author’s WALK ON EARTH A STRANGER, which comes out on September 22nd.

I fell in love with this series when it was first released… and actually fell in love with the idea of it before its release in 2011. So, of course it was one of those series that I did not want to see end and have been reluctant about reading the final book in the series. I’m still not sure I’m ready to say goodbye to Elisa.

But I’m going to have to. I’ve committed to this read-along. And I’m actually thrilled to be able to re-read THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS and THE CROWN OF EMBERS. So thrilled, in fact, that I may have already read ahead just a little. I mean, how could I stop after chapter 11 when the first part of the book is 12 chapters. Then how could I stop after what happened in chapter 12. Yeah. Anyway…

If you’d like to know a bit more about what goes down in those first eleven chapters, check out my thoughts below. And if you’d like to see what the four other participating bloggers thought about the start to THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS, visit each of their blogs – links are below their logos.

The Read-Along: Chapters 1-11

***Spoiler Alert: There are a few general plot spoilers in this post. ***

As I mentioned above, I’ve already read THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS. But it was a long time ago. I had an ARC copy of the book and read it before its release in 2011. And while it is one of those stories that is very memorable almost four years and a few hundred or so books later, there has been enough time since my last read that I find it just as exciting a read as it was the first time.

And just as hard to put down. Which I’ve had to do. Reluctantly. In order to try and stay focused for the read-along. Though I may have read eleven chapters ahead already. Anyway…

This first book in the trilogy is broken down into three parts. And while the first part consists of the first twelve chapters of the book, this first week of the read-along stops at the end of chapter eleven. If you’re following along by reading or re-reading this series, then I challenge you to stop one chapter shy of the end of part one. I then challenge you to try and stop reading after that chapter. I’m not sure it can be done.

In these first eleven chapters we meet Elisa, get to know a little bit about who she is – intelligent, sheltered, self-pitying, kind, stronger than she knows – learn how much she’s been kept in the dark about being the latest bearer of the Godstone, and see just how strong she can be when she needs to be.

We get to witness her wedding, meet her husband, Alejandro, who is kind of great most of the time…so far, meet Lord Hector who you kind of know is going to be great all of the time, discover what happens on her wedding night – no, that is not what we learn – and head out on a journey with them to his home in Joya. And it’s not a journey without peril. There is an attack. Not everyone survives. And a secret is discovered about someone close to Elisa.

Elisa’s arrival in Brisadulce is an interesting one as her marriage to Alejandro is kept hidden. She’s asked to take everyone’s measure, to see who might be against the King, her husband. She’s given a tour, she has a secret meeting with the priest to learn more about the Godstone and the previous bearers, she’s forced to keep her guard up and use her intelligence so as not to appear weak, and she has to keep her wits about her when Alejandro heads out to retrieve his son, Rosario, and takes along someone she suspects is his mistress. Grrrr.

Little Rosario turns out to be a handful, but is still kind of adorable. And he’s one of just a few people from Brisadulce that Elisa genuinely seems to like. The same cannot be said of Cosmé, whose loyalties are suspect and who shows an instant dislike for Elisa.

This part of the read-along ends after Elisa attends a strategy meeting, if you will, to discuss matters of war. She proves her worth, though it seems she’s made an enemy or two in the process. And by offering to take Alejandro’s place as Rosario’s escort on an outing through town and skipping out on the remainder of the meeting, she has all but guaranteed the enmity of Condesa Ariña.

In just eleven chapters we have adventure, political intrigue, secrets, deception, death. We are teased about what might be between Elisa and Alejandro….someday. Hints are dropped about just how taken Lord Hector is with Elisa. And we are kept riveted by the promise of discovering Elisa’s greater purpose and the idea that she might not live long enough to fulfill her destiny.

Yeah. It’s pretty freaking awesome so far.
