What if the world holds more dangers—and more wonders—than we have ever known? And what if there is more than one world?

From Heather Dixon, author of the acclaimed Entwined, comes a brilliantly conceived adventure that sweeps us from the inner workings of our souls to the far reaches of our imaginations.

Jonathan is perfectly ordinary. But then—as every good adventure begins—the king swoops into port, and Jonathan and his father are enlisted to find the cure to a deadly plague. Jonathan discovers that he’s a prodigy at working with a new chemical called fantillium, which creates shared hallucinations—or illusions. And just like that, Jonathan is knocked off his path.

Through richly developed parallel worlds, vivid action, a healthy dose of humor, and gorgeous writing, Heather Dixon spins a story that calls to mind The Night Circus and Pixar movies, but is wholly its own.

Creating the Alternate Worlds in ILLUSIONARIUM

by Heather Dixon

Creating the worlds in Illusionarium was a kick! I enjoyed the challenge of starting with a fairly unfamiliar world {the Arthurisian Empire} and moving forward into an even crazier world {Nod’ol.}

In Illusionarium, the idea of parallel worlds goes something like this:

All  the worlds begin by being the same world on a straight path. But then, something happens. Maybe Columbus decides to not take a trip to the New World, or Gutenberg decided to become a farmer instead of inventing the printing press. And—the world splits. One, where Gutenberg farms and one where Gutenberg prints the Bible. This schism would be {A} in the diagram.

As such, the worlds are set on different paths. Within 100 years, these parallel universes are very different from each other {The Arthurise Empire {B}, the Nod’olian world {C}}—which is what Jonathan discovers when he’s trapped in Nod’ol. In fact, he and his friends figure out where exactly their worlds schismed:

“I drew dates and events in the dust, marking each line and comparing historical events with each other. Venturing through the wars, massacres, discoveries, events of each world, we became more and more excited the closer to the schism we came. By the time we finished, a network of events and dates etched the dust all the way to the kitchen wall. Anna had painted a grim picture of Nod’ol: an empire that had risen to massive power, building an undefeatable army of airships, then terrorizing the earth. Nod’olian monarchs, who had once been the same as ours, had been overthrown by those who mined the aether streams, and illusionists reigned.”

Jonathan himself echoes this theme—if he doesn’t stick to what he knows is right, he will veer just like that world—and might even become a monster.
