It’s been seven days since Clementine and Logan, along with their allies, retreated into hiding on the Surface. The rebels may have won one battle against Commander Charlie, but the fight is far from finished. He has vowed to find a way to win—no matter the cost. Do the rebels have what it takes to defeat him…and put an end to this war?

As Clementine and Logan enter a desperate race against time to defeat Commander Charlie—and attempt to weaken his power within his own ranks—they find themselves in a terrifying endgame that pits them against a brutal enemy, and each other. With every step, Clementine draws closer to losing Logan…and losing control of herself.

Continuing with the mesmerizing saga that started with Extraction, Stephanie Diaz blends science fiction, epic romance, and heart-stopping adventure to create a world that no reader will soon forget.

NOTE: This review is based on an eARC received from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest thoughts about the book.

The Review

REBELLION is the action-packed, suspenseful, and totally epic second book in Stephanie Diaz’s amazing and unputdownable series set on a planet being threatened from without by the moon’s deadly acid and from within by a leader who demands complete subservience and who sees those not Promising as disposable. It is an electrifying and riveting sequel that will keep readers on edge as they follow the rebels and learn whether their uprising is enough to stop the Commander from going through with the latest of his heinous plans.

The story picks up right where it left off in EXTRACTION, following its explosive and heartbreaking end, not missing a beat. It grabs right from the start, sets a fast pace, and thrusts readers right back into the action, taking them on an intense and tension-filled ride that does not let up for a moment.

The rebels have a plan in place, but Commander Charlie always seems to be one step ahead. If they can’t convince others to join in the fight, it will mean the end of their uprising. If they’re caught, it will mean the end for them and those they care most about. And if they can’t stop him, it will mean thousands of lives lost.

The odds may be stacked against them, but they have to try, for the sake of everyone on Kiel who is not deemed worthy. Even if they can’t trust everyone in their alliance with the truth for fear that capture will lead to the inescapable bending of their will to the Commander. And even if not everyone who claims to be an ally is trustworthy.

Up against a cold, calculating, ruthless, and seemingly invincible leader who is willing to use everything and everyone at his disposal to gain the advantage, victory if far from a sure thing. And with the very real possibility that he is not even their biggest or only threat, defeating him may not be enough to save them all.

Betrayal, lies, and treachery abound in this incredibly climactic and heart-stopping second installment. Stephanie Diaz did not hold back in her must-read sophomore novel. REBELLION is even more exciting and danger-filled than its predecessor. There are more shocks and surprises. There are more reasons to despise Commander Charlie. It brings even more heartbreak. And it ends on a note that will leave readers desperate for the next installment.

The Rating

Like In-N-Out Burger‘s infamous secret menu this one deserves my off-the-menu 6 star rating.

About Stephanie Diaz

Stephanie Diaz

Stephanie first knew she wanted to be an author when she was in second grade, sitting in a book club drinking tea and reading books like The Egypt Game. She dreamed someday people might drink tea while devouring books she had written. She wrote her first book soon after, a 30-page fantasy story–complete with a hand-drawn map–stapled together and presented to her younger sister for a birthday present.

Now twenty-two years old, she lives in San Diego with her family. She graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in film production and a publishing deal for a young adult sci-fi trilogy. She is the author of Extraction and the forthcoming Rebellion and Evolution.

When she isn’t lost in other worlds, she can be found singing, marveling at the night sky, or fangirling over TV shows.

“Welcome to Extraction testing.”

Clementine has spent her whole life preparing for her sixteenth birthday, when she’ll be tested for Extraction in the hopes of being sent from the planet Kiel’s toxic Surface to the much safer Core, where people live without fear or starvation. When she proves promising enough to be “Extracted,” she must leave without Logan, the boy she loves. Torn apart from her only sense of family, Clem promises to come back and save him from brutal Surface life.

What she finds initially in the Core is a utopia compared to the Surface—it’s free of hard labor, gun-wielding officials, and the moon’s lethal acid. But life is anything but safe, and Clementine learns that the planet’s leaders are planning to exterminate Surface dwellers, which means Logan, too.

Trapped by the steel walls of the underground and the lies that keep her safe, Clementine must find a way to escape and rescue Logan and the rest of the planet. But the planet leaders don’t want her running—they want her subdued.

With intense action scenes and a cast of unforgettable characters, Extraction is a page-turning, gripping read, sure to entertain lovers of Hunger Games and Ender’s Game, and leave them breathless for more.
