If you haven’t yet heard about THE PERFECTIONISTS, the book’s details follow. And if for some reason you aren’t yet following Author Sara Shepard, her details are right below that.

If you want to know what I think about this first part of the book, my not-too-spoiler-y thoughts are located just above the giveaway section. I promise not to reveal anything major, but as this is a read-along I will be discussing a bit about what happens plot-wise each week.

And yes, I am (so far successfully) trying not to read ahead. But it is soooooo hard and it’s only week one.

From the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling series Pretty Little Liars comes a thrilling new novel about five perfect girls who are framed for a murder they didn’t commit.

In Beacon Heights, Washington, five girls—Ava, Caitlin, Mackenzie, Julie, and Parker—know that you don’t have to be good to be perfect. At first the girls think they have nothing in common, until they realize that they all hate Nolan Hotchkiss, who’s done terrible things to each of them. They come up with the perfect way to kill him—a hypothetical murder, of course. It’s just a joke…until Nolan turns up dead, in exactly the way they planned. Only, they didn’t do it. And unless they find the real killer, their perfect lives will come crashing down around them.

From Sara Shepard, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Pretty Little Liars series, comes another story of dark secrets, shocking twists, and what happens when five beautiful girls will do anything to hide the ugly truth.

About Sara Shepard

Sara-Shepard-BioFor as long as she can remember, Sara Shepard has been writing. However, when she was young she also wanted to be a soap opera star, a designer for LEGO, a filmmaker, a claymation artist, a geneticist, and a fashion magazine editor when she grew up. She and her sister have been creating joint artistic and written projects for years, except they’re pretty sure they’re the only ones who find them funny.

She got her MFA at Brooklyn College and now lives outside Philadelphia, PA with her husband and dogs. Her first adult novel is called The Visibles/ All The Things We Didn’t Say.

Sara’s bestselling young adult series, Pretty Little Liars, is loosely based on her experiences growing up on Philadelphia’s Main Line…although luckily she never had any serious stalkers. The series has also inspired the ABC Family television series of the same name.

The Read-Along

My Thoughts on the Prologue and Chapters 1-9

The prologue sets things up perfectly. It introduces the characters – Caitlin Martell-Lewis, Julie Redding, Ava Jalali, Mackenzie Wright and Parker Duvall – all of whom have something against the not-at-all-innocent and majorly douchey victim, Nolan Hotchkiss. It sets the stage – a plan is put into motion, a boy ends up dead, and there is a witness who may also be the killer.

In the first nine chapters – told in alternating POVs for each of the five girls who plotted revenge against Nolan – some of their history with Nolan is brought to light, establishing motive, additional characters are introduced, all of whom are potential suspects, and more about each of them is revealed.

Everyone has a reason to want Nolan Hotchkiss dead. Many have a reason to want Caitlin or Julie or Ava or Mac or Parker to go down for the crime. So who did it? Who killed Nolan Hotchkiss? Well, even though I have my suspicions I won’t be revealing what they are. And the story certainly doesn’t divulge its secrets it in the first nine chapters. So it’s just a matter of waiting and seeing.

Could it be the girl who he wouldn’t give the time of day to? The girl he used and humiliated? The girl he cheated on and spread rumors about? The girl who lost someone she loved because of him? The girl whose family he destroyed? Or maybe it was the girl who lost every part of who she used to be?

Maybe it was someone else.

So far, THE PERFECTIONISTS is a super quick and thoroughly entertaining read. That prologue immediately grabbed me. The mystery aspect has kept me engaged. The story is suspenseful – so much so that I desperately want to pick the book back up right now and read ahead instead of read along.

And I can’t wait to see what happens in the next nine chapters and whether anything leads the police back to Julie, Caitlin, Ava, Mackenzie and/or Parker.

With only around one-third of the book down and two-thirds remaining, there’s plenty of story left to tell, secrets to be revealed, motives to be uncovered, and characters to fall under suspicion.

Until next Tuesday….
