My Reading Pile #185

MyReadingPileIt was another quiet week at the mailbox this week, but I received a book for review whose description totally intrigued me so I can’t wait to dive into it (hopefully) next weekend.

I received a finished copy of THE FIGURES OF BEAUTY by David MacFarlane for review courtesy of the publisher, HarperCollinsWhen I saw the invitation to review it in my email I couldn’t resist saying yes. It sounds like a beautiful and romantic love story and I am looking forward to meeting the narrator who is a daughter unknown to the story’s main character.

It releases next week on the 7th of October, but I won’t get the chance to get it on the pile until at least next weekend due to some reading backlog. But I am hopeful I’ll get the chance to read it if not by its release date, just a bit later that week.

I also received two eARCs for review – UNBREAKABLE and ETERNAL by C.C. Hunter – courtesy of the publisher for the blog tour I’ll be on at the end of October. I love the author’s YA series about Kylie and I cannot wait to read her Shadow Falls: After Dark series about Della.

As I have just a little bit of time before the tour, I won’t be reading either the novella or the novel this week. But I will definitely be adding both to the pile in the next couple of weeks.

And while I may have put in a request on Edelweiss for one book on Friday, I doubt I’ll be approved. But aside from that one request, I’ve been very much trying to hide from both online eGalley sites. I’m happy to say I’ve been somewhat successful.

Here are the books I have in my reading pile this week.

{September 28, 2014 – October 4, 2014}

Talon Cover

Add to Goodreads

I’m only adding one book to the pile this week and it is TALON by Julie Kagawa. I received an ARC from Jaime of Two Chicks on Books awhile back from her trip to ALA. It was the book I most wanted and she offered to see if she could grab me a copy.

While I haven’t yet been able to read it, I can’t wait anymore. I’ll be on the book’s tour in a few weeks and while I don’t have to read it for review, I very much want to read it before my stop date on the 17th.

I’ve read a few reviews so I have an idea of what to expect, and I can’t wait to meet Ember, Dante and Garret. As I have to do a bit of catch up on some of my currently reading books, I hope to get this one on the pile on Wednesday.

The Description…

Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they’re positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.

Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon’s newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey: and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember’s bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him: and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.

Wishful Thinking Reads

My wishful thinking read this week is LARK RISING by Sandra Waugh. After I took a peek at the excerpt, I fell in love with the author’s writing and immediately pre-ordered it for my Kindle. Well it downloaded this past week and I’ve been dying to get the chance to read it. But as I have a few books I need to finish reading for review in the next couple of weeks, for now it’s sadly going to have to remain a wish.

Those Left Behind

I did not get the chance to read LOVE ME TO DEATH this past week, though I am reading it now. So I will hopefully have it completed before the end of the weekend and possibly reviewed on the blog here this week, because things are going to be kind of crazy here for the next few weeks.

It’s been a bit of a strange week for me and while I found time to read and review ADRENALINE CRUSH and post it over on RYAR and wrote and posted my review for MADE FOR YOU, I didn’t have much time to read. Though I did manage to sneak in a read of WINTERSPELL by Claire Legrand, which I wanted to do prior to my tour stop on Friday. I managed to read 75% of it before then and finished the remainder this past evening.

I also managed to finish writing my review of THE QUEEN OF ZOMBIE HEARTS, which I started writing back in May… or June. I lost a few versions of it somewhere along the way and only had the saved personal note on the blog. But I got the rest of the review put together and posted, finally. And I can’t wait to get the finished copy on Tuesday.

Though I’m still totally sad that the series has ended.

If all goes well I’ll be writing and posting my reviews for INVISIBLE by Dawn Metcalf and WINTERSPELL by Claire Legrand over on RYAR this weekend or on Monday and Tuesday of next week. And even more hopefully I will write up my review for THE GIFTED DEAD here on Fiktshun.

I think my brain took a vacation this week. I still can’t believe it’s been just a week since I returned from my sailing “adventure.” Though I don’t think I’ve quite recovered yet.

NetGalley Pile Adds & Finds

I didn’t request any eARCs from NetGalley this past week, though I did request and was approved for the three-chapter sneak peek of ENSNARED by A.G. Howard. I am dying to read that next book in the series. DYING. But I’m just going to have to be content with a peek.

And while I didn’t request any review galleys, there are a few ones that look interesting.

Here are this week’s finds…

I am more than a little bit sad that this will be my final My Reading Pile post here at Fiktshun. I’m actually majorly bummed to have been winding things down over these past few months. As much as I love blogging on Reading YA Rocks, it’s not this blog that I created and grew and poured my blood (from head meeting desk too often), sweat (have you ever tried rushing to read something by a deadline?) and tears (from the stress, from feeling not good enough, from being rejected, from reading a book that tore my heart out) into.

Reading YA Rocks was someone else’s creation – a gorgeous one at that – but it wasn’t conceived by me, for me. There is a definite lack of attachment. At least right now. But it has helped me write reviews that much easier and quicker and shorter. And I am feeling less and less guilty for not reviewing books – because I am actually reviewing them – and less worried about being plagiarized – as they are reviews that take between one and two hours vs. four or more.

As I’ve said, I will still keep this blog live and will post the occasional random thought, review for a non-YA title or participate in something that for some reason must be tied to the Fiktshun name. But hopefully things will pick up over at RYAR, even though I will be posting mostly reviews over there, which tend to be very not popular.

Anyway… I still haven’t quite decided what I’m going to call the Reading Pile/Haul post over there. But I will be sharing books received (if any) and the books I’m reading, as well as my NetGalley finds next Saturday if I actually figure out a name.

For the final time here on Fiktshun, I wish you all the most amazing reading week ahead. I hope you received some awesome books and ARCs. And if you’d like to share what you have on your pile this week – or what you received – I’d love to know.

Happy reading!
