I am thrilled to welcome Author Stacey O’Neale to the blog today for an interview as part of the MORTAL ENCHANTMENT Blog Tour. I think it’s amazing that she juggles all that she does. And although she answered this question, I still don’t know where she finds the time and energy.
MORTAL ENCHANTMENT is the first full-length book in a series of the same name, which released this month. But if you’d like to take a peek at the prequel novella before diving into this book, it’s currently available in eBook format at Amazon and Barnes & Noble for free. Just scroll down to THE SHADOW PRINCE for links.
As I asked quite a few questions about the author, her writing, her characters and her series, and snuck in a few “Quickie Qs,” I’m going to try and keep this introduction brief.
But if you like books that blend magic and myth, action, adventure and romance, then you’ll definitely want to check this series out. And I’ve included some information about each of the books in the series a little bit further down in this post so you can do just that.
If you’d like to “meet” the author, her details and places to find her online are also below. And, as part of this tour, the author is giving away a super awesome bookish gift card. Just follow the instructions in the Rafflecopter for a chance to win.
Before all of that, however, is the interview, in which I ask the author all sorts of questions.
Q. You are a blogger, a publicist and now a writer. How are you able to juggle everything? And were there any sacrifices you’ve had to make in order to incorporate writing into your day?
I wasn’t able to juggle everything. I was spending all my time as Jennifer L. Armentrout’s publicist and had little time for any writing. I ended up having to leave her to pursue my writing career. The blog is easier to keep up with because I never stopped reading books. I also have several other reviewers who always manage to pick up the slack.
Q. While still early in your writing career, what has been your favorite moment as a writer?
Every single time I talk to someone who’s read my book. It’s so awesome.
Q. What inspired you to write the Mortal Enchantment series?
I was researching faeries when I kept coming across the word elemental. I Googled the name and happened to stumble upon the sixteenth century works of an alchemist named Paracelsus. He identified the four types of elementals, even giving them names. My brain started spinning with ideas, and eventually, the characters came to life.
Q. If you had to describe MORTAL ENCHANTMENT in 15 words or less, what would they be?
Romance, Adventure, Mystery, Betrayal, Magic, Fear, Strength, Passion, Overcoming Obstacles, Swoony Boys, Snarky Girls, and Fun. ☺
Q. Which of the characters has been your favorite to write about in the series? And why?
Rowan has probably been the most fun thus far because I’ve gotten to know him so well. I’ve spent so much time in his head between THE SHADOW PRINCE and MORTAL ENCHANTMENT. Also, half of FRAGILE REIGN (Mortal Enchantment #2) is told in his point of view.
Q. Which elemental court would you like to belong to, if you could choose? And why? What is your least favorite element (and why)?
I really like air because you get to control the weather. The whole idea of it reminds me of Storm from the X-Men. She’s always been one of my favorite comic book characters. The least favorite element is probably fire because I think it’s the least interesting in terms of what you can do with it.
Q. What was your favorite scene to write about in MORTAL ENCHANTMENT? Your most challenging scene?
Chapter Twenty was my favorite chapter to write. I had that scene in my head even before I knew how the book would end. I don’t want to say much more about it because I don’t want to ruin it for anyone.
The most challenging scene to write was Chapter Two because there was so much going on at once. A lot of what happened there set the tone for the major conflicts in the book. I spent a considerable amount of time writing and rewriting that chapter.
Q. Do you have a favorite quote from MORTAL ENCHANTMENT? If so, could you share it, and why it’s a favorite?
‟Enjoying the view?” he said, eyes suddenly on me. His chiseled face wore an overly confident grin. Clearly, he was used to being admired.
My cheeks burned.
I stood, pretending to check out the scenery. ‟Not much to see.”
I love the banter between these two. Sometimes I would bust out laughing as I wrote their scenes. They are both so fun. Plus, I like that she keeps him on his toes.
Q. For your debut, had you always planned on writing a series? Do you find it to be more challenging than you’d thought?
I guess it was at first, but this is actually the fifth book I’ve written. I prefer to write a series because it gives me more time to develop relationships with each character and really explore who they are.
Q. What makes MORTAL ENCHANTMENT stand out in its genre?
I think it stands out because it’s a blending of genres. There are the obvious paranormal elements, but it’s also got plenty of mystery, adventure, and romance. Some have even called it a high fantasy so I’d say that makes it pretty different.
Q. Are you a plotter or a pantster?
A little of both. I write a 3-4 sentence summary for each chapter before I start each novel, but I tend to discover new things as I write.
Q. Write at night or during the day?
Always during the day while my daughter is at school. I only write at night when I’m behind and I have a deadline.
Q. Standalone or series?
Q. Happily ever after or happily never after?
HEA. I’m a mush. 😉
Q. Hero or villain?

In Kalin Matthew’s world, elementals control the forces of nature. They are divided into four courts: air, woodland, fire, and water. At sixteen she will leave the life she’s built with her mortal mother. Kalin will move to Avalon to rule with her father—the elemental king of the air court. Along the way, she’s attacked by a fire court assassin and saved by Rowan, a swoon-worthy elemental with a questionable past.
Worst of all, she learns her father is missing.
To rescue him, Kalin will have to work with a judgmental council and a system of courts too busy accusing each other of deceit to actually be able to help her. But, they aren’t her biggest challenge. With the Midwinter’s Ball only five days away, Kalin must take over her father’s duties, which includes shifting control of the elements—power Kalin has yet to realize.
As Rowan attempts to train her, a war looms between the four courts. If Kalin fails, her father will die and the courts will fall, but the betrayal she’s about to uncover may cost her even more…
