Uninvited Blog Tour: ‘Challenges of Creating the World’ Guest Post + Giveaway

I’ve read some seriously amazing books so far this year but my most favorite read of 2014 is UNINVITED by Sophie Jordan. It was one of those totally unexpected, mind-blowing reads that I just can’t stop thinking about. So, natch, I’m super excited to be a part of the UNINVITED Blog Tour where I can help spread the word about this unbelievably awesome, chilling, riveting, shocking, surprising, amazing first book in this series.

For a long time now I’ve known what a fantastic writer Sophie Jordan is. In the past year I’ve learned just how much range she has as an author. I fell in love with her New Adult novel and I’m now madly in love with her new YA sci-fi/dystopian. I’ve only had the chance to read it just the once, but I’m already planning on adding it back to the pile this weekend.

I wasn’t ready to leave the world when I turned to the last page, so I can’t wait to go back and visit it again. Even if Davy’s world is more than a little bit scary.

As I am so fascinated by the world Sophie Jordan created, I couldn’t be happier to be able to share a guest post by her on some of the challenges she faced when creating this world. The research she had to conduct in order to build the world sounds every bit as scary as the world itself. I couldn’t imagine what it’s like having to go to such dark places to develop a story.

But I am so glad that she did. Because the end result was a brilliantly crafted story and world.

While I may have lead you to believe otherwise, it’s not all devastation, heartbreak, thrills and chills. There is a touch of romance and a very swoon-worthy boy. And there are plenty of elements in this story that will really make you think.

But enough about what I think. I’m sharing a post from the author about the challenges of creating the world. I’m not supposed to be sharing my thoughts. So I’ll cease my rambling and let that happen.

And if you stick around for a bit longer after the Guest Post, there’s some information about the book and author, the book’s fab trailer, the full tour schedule with direct links to all the stops and a very awesome giveaway that I really, really, want to enter.

Now, without any further ado…

The Challenges of Creating the UNINVITED World

by Sophie Jordan

The challenges of this world were … yeah … challenging. UNINVITED isn’t like anything I’ve written before. The world of UNINVITED wasn’t like building a paranormal world full of shifters where a lot more fantasy elements exist. I actually had to research – imagine that! 😉 It’s easy to pose the question: “what if…” Harder to answer the question and flesh out the possibilities.

I looked into crime statistics of the USA over the last twenty years. I watched a lot of true crime television – more than usual for me. I watched the entire season of the documentary series, KILLER KIDS. That was actually very difficult to watch. There wasn’t a single episode that did not leave me horrified and shaken and take me to a dark place. But it also made me think about the scenes I was developing in UNINVITED. I wanted them to be authentic … even if that meant hitting on some touchy topics and visiting some dark places.

I also spoke with a doctor about genetic testing in determining various traits/disabilities/disorders – where the science is at today and then we philosophized about where it ‘could’ go. It’s really that kind of conjecture that helped me build the world of UNINVITED.

But seriously … the hardest part was coming up with the interstitials. Those are the little tidbits I put between every chapter ( so I had to come up with a lot!!). They are made up crime stats, data, 911 transcripts, interviews, CDC releases, etc … that kind of thing. That was stretching my brain in a direction I don’t usually go. I had to think clinically … almost like a scientist.

About Uninvited

The Scarlet Letter meets Minority Report in bestselling author Sophie Jordan’s chilling new novel about a teenage girl who is ostracized when her genetic test proves she’s destined to become a murderer.

When Davy Hamilton’s tests come back positive for Homicidal Tendency Syndrome (HTS)-aka the kill gene-she loses everything. Her boyfriend ditches her, her parents are scared of her, and she can forget about her bright future at Juilliard. Davy doesn’t feel any different, but genes don’t lie. One day she will kill someone.

Only Sean, a fellow HTS carrier, can relate to her new life. Davy wants to trust him; maybe he’s not as dangerous as he seems. Or maybe Davy is just as deadly.

The first in a two-book series, Uninvited tackles intriguing questions about free will, identity, and human nature.
